The '''Byzantine Empire''', known contemporaneously as the '''(Eastern) Roman Empire''', was the predominantly Greek and/or Hellenized continuation of the [[Roman Empire]] during {{Wiki|Late Antiquity}} and the {{Wiki|Middle Ages}}.

The Byzantine capital, [[Constantinople]], was eventually conquered by the [[Ottoman Empire]] and fell into Ottoman control; until its collapse, the Byzantine Empire had been established for 1123 years.

==History==
===Templar infiltration===
During the early 16th century, after the [[Templars]] were driven from [[Italy]] by the [[Assassins]], the members of the Templar Order were able to seize control of the remnants of the Byzantine Empire. Now in command, the Templars set up their primary headquarters at [[Derinkuyu]] in Cappadocia, where the Byzantines' ultimate aim was to uproot the Ottoman Empire and retake control of Constantinople. For a time, however, they remained relatively quiet.

===Masyaf===
By 1509, the Templars were aware of the five [[Memory Seals|seals]] of [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]]. In this year, after an earthquake shook Constantinople, the Templars discovered one of the seals under [[Topkapı Palace]], as the entrance to the seal's chamber had been opened by the seismic activity.

Following this discovery, the Byzantine Templars became more active and militant in their desire to retake Constantinople and find the remaining four seals. Shortly afterwards, this seal passed into the possession of the de facto Byzantine Emperor – the Templar in charge of the hunt for the seals – [[Manuel Palaiologos]].

By the beginning of 1511, a Byzantine Templar captain named [[Leandros]] had occupied the region surrounding Masyaf, where the [[library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] was located, though by May 1511, the region had been cleansed of Templars by the [[Mentor]] of the [[Italian Assassins]], [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], who was visiting Masyaf to learn more of the Assassin Order.

By this time, the Templars were searching the [[Forum of the Ox]] and the [[Yerebatan Cistern]] in Constantinople for seals, though they were beaten to both of these seals by Ezio.

===Constantinople===

As the Templars plotted to overthrow the Ottomans, many Byzantine soldiers were present in Constantinople by mid-1511. These soldiers rivaled the [[Turkish Assassins|Constantinople Assassins Guild]], and by the month of May, they had seized all of the [[Assassin Dens]] for themselves aside from two, with them being one in [[Galata District|Galata]], and one in the [[Imperial District]], near the [[Grand Bazaar]].

Shortly after Ezio's arrival in the city, the Templars launched an attack on both of the remaining dens, and though they were routed at Galata, they managed to take the den at the Grand Bazaar. However, this would prove to be a temporary victory, as the Assassins retook the den shortly after. Over the 11 months that Ezio spent in the city, he managed to retake the dens one by one and severely weaken the Templars, until March 1512.

Following this, Ezio left for Cappadocia in search of Palaiologos, who possessed the last seal. Ultimately, Ezio killed Manuel and claimed the seal for himself, though, as he was about to leave, he noticed the Ottoman prince [[Ahmet]] on a ship with Byzantines, who revealed that he was the true mastermind behind the Masyaf expedition.

During the early 16th century, the Templars set up their headquarters in Cappadocia, after being driven from their previous base in [[Rome]] by the Assassins. There, the Templars set up prisons and instated themselves as the rulers of the city, filling the streets with Byzantine soldiers.

Palaiologos resided in Cappadocia for some time after his family lost their hold on the Byzantine throne. He, along with his bodyguard and fellow Templar, [[Shahkulu]], governed much of the city and held power within its walls until Ezio's arrival.

*The frequently spoken name "Byzantine" is an anachronism, as this name was given to the Eastern Roman Empire by later historians, in order to distinguish between it and ancient Rome. As such, the Byzantines would have referred to themselves as "Romans", "Greeks" and/or "Hellenes" (''Romaioi'', ''Graikoi'' and ''Ellines'' in Greek respectively) since they were the political continuation of the Roman Empire in the east, as well as the direct heirs and guardians of Hellenic civilization. Despite the word Byzantine first being used roughly 30 years after the events of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, and widespread use of the word not occurring until the 19th century, Manuel Palaiologos and many other characters still use the term, likely for the sake of audience recognition.

On 29 October 2013, Melanie inducted a [[Abstergo Entertainment research analyst|new employee]] into the company, and introduced them to the company's CCO, [[Olivier Garneau]]. Afterwards, Melanie showed the employee to their Animus station and left them to explore [[Edward Kenway]]'s [[Genetic memory|genetic memories]].<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

On 13 November 2013, Melanie unknowingly found a picture of Juno in a copy of Pirates of Nightmares. She started to ask the Abstergo Entertainment development team, however none of them knew what it was. The investigation into the image was then taken over by [[Laetitia England]].

Not long after this, Olivier went missing while en-route to a shareholder's meeting with Laetitia at Abstergo Industries, and Melanie was forced to assume control in his stead. Simultaneously, Melanie found herself dealing with a series of hacks across the company's servers, security systems, computers, and [[Animus#Animus Omega|Animi]]. All the evidence seemed to suggest that the recently inducted employee was responsible.<ref name="AC4" />

Eventually, the hacks escalated to such a level of severity, that Melanie was forced to isolate several members of the Sample 17 team in the [[Bunker]], a basement level of the [[Montreal]] facility, that would allow the researchers to continue their work without compromising the rest of the facility.<ref name="AC4" />

Eventually, the decision was made to detain the suspected hacker, and Melanie, escorted by armed security, made her way to the analyst's room. Inside, they saw [[John Standish]] from IT trying to poison their suspect, but he was shot and killed during the attempt.<ref name="AC4" />

Melanie later apologized for suspecting the analyst, reasoning that John had been solely responsible for the hacks all along. She then rewarded the analyst with a sneak-peek of the trailer for the company's latest product, the ''[[Pirates of Nightmares]]''.<ref name="AC4" />

After the death of John Standish, Melanie reported to Laetitia England. She told Laetitia how Standish was killed and asked if Laetitia had heard anything from Olivier since he disappeared.<ref name="AC4" />

After the disappearance of Olivier Garneau, Melanie took over as Chief Creative Officer of Abstergo Entertainment office in Montreal, and was inducted into the Templar Order.<ref name="ACRG">''[[Assassin's Creed: Rogue]]''</ref>

On June 2014, Melanie focused on creating new games, specially about different [[Assassins]] and Templars through history, asking for opinions to the employees, among them [[Robert Fraser]]. On 25 June, Melanie sent Robert and email telling him to stop playing "games of chance" like {{Wiki|Pharaoh}} since this would create tension within the employees and then encouraged him to find other ways to spend time with his colleagues.<ref name="EH" />

Sometime later, Aidan gave her Robert's psychological evaluation that was made to see if he had the [[Bleeding Effect]] and Melanie thanked him for keeping her informed. She as well asked him to watch Robert's behaviour closely.<ref name="EH" />

On 18 July, Melanie sent Robert some rough sketches for Arno's and [[Elise de la Serre|Elise]]'s figurines and asked him what he thought about them.<ref name="EH" />

On 29 July, Robert, after spending a week with Abstergo's psychiatrist [[Victoria Bibeau]], sent her a reapplication letter for Arno's project claiming that he was now in perfect conditions to continue his work. After speaking about it with Aidan, she decided to reapplicate Robert. Unexpectedly, some days later both Robert and Victoria started burning documents and deleting every file related to Arno Dorian. They also leaked the unsequenced memories to the Assassins before they were terminated.<ref name="EH" />

Melanie ordered Aidan to recover what was left from the files to give it to Templar initiate [[Percy Westcreek]] for him to review and to help him finish Arno's memories. Since Percy had the [[Eagle Vision]], Melanie would often give him some artifact for him to examine, like Arno's watch, the chalice from the [[Initiation into the Assassin Order|Assassin Order initiation]], and a [[Templar pin|Templar badge of office]].<ref name="EH" />

When Percy relived Arno's memories up to his encounter with [[Sages|Sage]] and [[Grand Master]] [[François-Thomas Germain]] on 21 January 1793 at [[Louis XVI of France|King Louis XVI]]'s execution, Melanie gave him a promotion within the Templar ranks as well as the title of Journeyman, which gave him access to to confidential information on the [[Isu]], their [[Pieces of Eden|technology]] and Abstergo's [[Phoenix Project]]. After Percy had finished reading the information, Melanie revealed him the true purpose of his project, finding Germain's remains before the Assassins.

Thanks to Percy's swift work with Arno's memories and his abilities with the Eagle Vision, Melanie provided Percy with a trip on an Abstergo Entertainment private jet to examine the [[French Assassins]]' hideout underneath [[Sainte-Chapelle]], hoping that Percy's Eagle Vision would help him discover some secrets others might have missed.<ref name="EH" />

On November, a [[Helix research analyst|research analyst]] triggered a virus embedded in the memories of [[Shay Cormac]] stored in the [[Helix]], causing the entire facility to become compromised. In response, Melanie ordered an evacuation of the building, leaving [[Violet da Costa]] and [[Juhani Otso Berg]] in charge of restoring the systems and security. Melanie later called the research analyst to her office, telling them of Olivier's disappearance, and granting the analyst necessary security clearance to continue exploring Shay's genetic memories. After the research analyst finished analyzing Cormac's memories, Melanie and Violet were present when Berg gave the analyst a choice of joining the Templar Order or being killed.<ref name="ACRG" />

Around the same time Melanie was working on the Dvija A.I. project, but needed a digital version of [[Monima Das]] to finish. She also sought to work with [[MysoreTech]] to create virtual historical tours, concerts, and sporting events. ==Personality and characteristics==
A fair, cheerful and amiable woman, Melanie was quite good-natured and genuinely cared for those working under her. She argued several times with Olivier Garneau about the pressure that Abstergo Industries had put on them, and their high priority in locating the Observatory. Following Garneau's disappearance, Melanie was reluctant to use the full extent of her powers to isolate the Project team, noting that although she had the contractual right to detain them indefinitely, she would rather not.<ref name="AC4" />

She often became genuinely concerned when any of her employees were subjected to harm or duress, as demonstrated when the newly recruited research analyst ran into trouble in several instances.<ref name="AC4" />

She even argued with Olivier when he planned to over work the employees to find the Observatory.

However, she seemed to become less compassionate after joining the Templar Order, and seemed to have no qualms in letting Berg kill the research analyst if they refused to join the Templar Order. Nonetheless, she actively encouraged the research analyst to join the Order, believing that the Order would promise them a better life.

Atkin pursued studies to nurture her passion for acting from an early age.
