Ezio Auditore da Firenze (born 1459) was an important figure during the Italian Renaissance - unbeknownst to most historians and philosophers - and a member of the Assassin's Order. He is a descendant of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the ancestor of Desmond Miles and possibly Subject 16. Ezio was unaware of his Assassin heritage until he was 17-years-old, when following the murder of his father and two brothers, Federico and Petruccio, Ezio fled from Florence and took refuge in the town of Monteriggioni at the Auditore Family Villa.

After the mentoring and training from his uncle, Mario Auditore, Ezio proceeded on his quest of revenge against the Grandmaster of the Knights Templar, Rodrigo Borgia, who had ordered the execution of his father and two brothers. During his 23 year quest for revenge, Ezio managed to not only unite The Codex pages Altaïr wrote, for the first time since Domenico Auditore, but also to save the cities of Florence and Venice from the Templars' wrath. Later still, Ezio was responsible for the rescue of Christoffa Corombo, uncovering a new plot to discover the "New World".

Biography
Early life
Ezio Auditore da Firenze was born in 1459 AD, to Giovanni and Maria Auditore. Until the age of 17, Ezio lived a life of luxury as a a member of the Florentine noble class, unaware of his father's allegiance to the Assassin Order. As a youth he was an apprentice to a Florentine banker, presumably to learn the ropes of banking, so that he could become the leader of the Auditore bank.

At the beginning of Assassin's Creed II, Ezio, his older brother Federico, and friends of the family got into a fight with Vieri de' Pazzi and his gang. Ezio singlehandedly defeated several members of the opposing gang, but unfortunately, Vieri escaped the scene before Ezio could do anything to him. During the fight, Ezio was cut on the side of his mouth, so Frederico suggested that they visit the local doctor. After looting several people left unconscious from the fight, the two brothers ran across the rooftops to the Doctor.

After the doctor had tended to his wound, a church nearby caught the eye of the brothers and Federico suggested a race. Ezio won and together the two looked out over the city. Realizing that they were nearby, Ezio traveled to the house of Cristina Vespucci and slept with her. Caught by Cristina's father the morning after, Ezio fled from a group of pursuing guards before meeting with his father at the Palazzo Auditore who assigned him the task of delivering several letters to his father's contacts.

After returning the palazzo, Ezio found his distraught sister crying after discovering her boyfriend had been unfaithful. After obtaining his whereabouts, Ezio beat the man and warned him to stay away from his sister. Upon returning to the palazzo again, his mother secured his services in picking up some paintings from a young artist that she patronized, Leonardo da Vinci.

Arrest and execution of his family
After completing his errands, Ezio returned home to find his father and brothers missing and his mother and sister hiding. Learning that city guards had been ordered to arrest Giovanni and all of his sons, Ezio made his way to the Piazza della Signoria, where his father and brothers were being held. Climbing the building and speaking to his father through the cell's windows, Ezio was instructed to find a chest hidden in his office, to take everything out of it and to deliver a sealed letter to Uberto Alberti, the personal assistant of Lorenzo de' Medici and a close friend of the Auditore family. Doing so, Ezio found the assassin coat that he would be wearing for the next 23 years and the letter to contain details of a plot against the city of Florence and the Auditore family. Ezio brought the incriminating documents to Alberti and was assured that his family would be released the following day when the information was presented as evidence of their innocence.

The next day, Ezio returned to the Piazza della Signoria to find Alberti presiding over the execution of the Auditores (watched over all the while by a mysterious stranger who had been present with Alberti that night). Giovanni claimed his innocence, citing the information given to Alberti as evidence, who denied any knowledge of such evidence's existence. Ezio's efforts to prevent the execution were ultimately in vain. When he attempted to charge the scaffold to avenge his kinsmen, Alberti ordered the city guards to murder Ezio. At the urging of one of Giovanni's friends, a thief, Ezio fled the Piazza della Signoria and sought shelter in a brothel, ran by the sister of the Auditore housemaid, a courtesan named Paola

Paola agreed to assist Ezio in his quest for vengeance, teaching him how to survive in the city as an outlaw through pickpocketing and blending in crowds. She further directed Ezio to Leonardo da Vinci to repair the "hidden blade" of the late Giovanni Auditore. After fixing the blade, Ezio sought out and assassinated Alberti in the courtyard of the Basilica of Santa Croce, stabbing him multiple times in the heart before proudly shouting his name to everyone present, marking Alberti as Ezio's first assassination.

Start as an Assassin
Now the most wanted man in Florence, Ezio fled Florence with his mother and sister in the hopes of making their way to Spain, stopping beforehand at the Auditore family's villa in the town of Monteriggioni, as a means of shelter. During their travel to Monteriggioni, the three were accosted by Vieri de' Pazzi and his followers, but were saved by the timely arrival of Ezio's uncle, Mario, and his Mercenaries. Mario informed Ezio of the Assassin Order, in an obvious attempt to induct him into the Order, revealing that many of his ancestors, including Giovanni, were a part of the Order. However, Ezio refused his ancestry, wishing only to continue onto Spain to ensure his mother and sister's safety. Enraged, Mario left Monteriggioni for the city of San Gimignano, the location of Vieri de' Pazzi, in the attempt to relieve Monteriggioni of continual assaults by Vieri's minions. Guilty and knowing his presence was a primary reason for the ongoing attacks, Ezio traveled to San Gimignano to accept Mario's offer.

When Ezio arrived outside the city, he joined Mario and his mercenaries in their assault on the city, waiting until nightfall to make their way to Vieri de' Pazzi by killing guards patrolling the city near the gates. After briefly watching a meeting between Rodrigo Borgia, Jacopo de' Pazzi, Francesco de' Pazzi and Vieri, Ezio encountered and fought Vieri for the last time. After a brief duel, Ezio eventually overpowered and killed Vieri, stabbing him in the throat. Ezio tried to extract a confession from his old enemy, but to no avail as Vieri chose to be snide even to the very end. Infuriated by this, Ezio flew into a rage and threatened to exact terrible vengeance on Vieri's corpse until his uncle calmed him and reminded him of a tradition of the Assassins: showing respect to those they have killed.

Killing the Pazzi
Following the death of Vieri, Ezio returned to Florence to prevent the planned Pazzi takeover and deaths of Lorenzo de' Medici and Guilani de' Medici. Arriving too late to save Guilani, Ezio managed to prevent the death of Lorenzo de' Medici, the ruler of Florence, and restored his family's good name. However, the Pazzis had already succeeded in their plan and brought the city into a state of civil war. After learning the location of Francesco de' Pazzi at the Piazza della Signoria, Ezio chased and murdered him, although Jacopo de' Pazzi and several other conspirators were able to escape. Shortly afterward, the Medici publicly cleared the name of the Auditore family and provided Ezio with the names of the conspirators who had escaped.

Learning that the Pazzi conspirators had fled to San Gimignano, Ezio tracked down and killed Antonio Maffei, Stefano da Bagnone, Bernardo di Bandino Baroncelli and Francesco Salviati, extracting from each man information on the hiding place of Jacopo de' Pazzi. Using the information, Ezio located his quarry and tracked Jacopo to an ancient Roman theater. Once there, Ezio eavesdropped on a meeting between Jacopo de' Pazzi, Rodrigo Borgia and the Venetian merchant, Emilio Barbarigo. After fatally wounding Jacopo for his failure to capture Florence, Borgia revealed to Ezio that he knew that he was there and was apprehended by Borgia's bodyguards while Borgia and Emilio fled. Before the guards could kill him, Ezio overpowered and killed Borgia's men before swiftly putting the dying Jacopo out of his misery.

Venice
With the Pazzi conspiracy ended, Ezio returned to Lorenzo and declared his success. Before leaving the city for Venice, Ezio was granted a gift; a Medici cape, that would keep the city guards' attention from him. Ezio then made his way to the studio of Leonardo, only to find that he had just left for Venice himself. Meeting with Leonardo, the two made their way through the Appennine Mountains to the city of Forlì, narrowly avoiding the Templar soldiers sent after them by Rodrigo Borgia.

Eventually arriving in Forlì, the two made their way to the city docks, where Ezio was refused passage without a pass. It was at this moment that the two heard the screams of a noble lady stranded in the city's wetlands. Ezio swiftly hastened to her rescue and was able to row the woman ashore. Rescued, the lady introduced herself as Caterina Sforza and coerced the dockman to grant Ezio passage to Venice. Once in Venice, Ezio and Leonardo were given a brief tour of the city before Ezio begun to seek out a way into the Palazzo of Emilio Barbarigo, although this effort proved to be in vain. Suddenly pushed aside, Ezio watched as a collection of thieves attempted and failed to breach the palazzo leading Ezio to subsequently aid in the escape of the thief Rosa, who had been shot through the leg with an arrow. After successfully escaping the city guards, Ezio was introduced to the leader of the Venetian thieves guild, Antonio, and together the two concocted a new plot to kill Emilio Barbarigo and liberate the merchant district.

The plot was successful, and gave Ezio the name of another Templar conspirator – Carlo Grimaldi. A government official and member of the Council of Ten, Carlo was close to Giovanni Mocenigo, the Doge of Venice and hoped to turn him to the Templar cause. Overhearing another meeting between Borgia and Carlo, Ezio uncovered a plot to poison the Doge and replace him with Marco Barbarigo. Returning to Antonio, the two sought to find a way into the Palazzo Ducale, the Doge's Palace, searching the front gates, the rear walls and even passing over the Basilica di San Marco; but were hampered at every turn. Returning to the piazza below, an enraged Antonio remarked at how only birds might get into the Doge's palace, reminding Ezio of Leonardo's flying machine he had seen on the way to Forlì.

After removing the city guards at four separate locations, Antonio's thieves proceeded to light massive bonfires throughout the city, giving Ezio the lift Leonardo's flying machine needed to make it to the Palazzo Ducale. The plan worked and Ezio breached the Palazzo Ducale, although he was too late to save the Doge. Carlo fled, crying out that Ezio had assassinated the Doge, although he himself did not survive long as his life was ended by Ezio's hands moments later. Blamed for killing the Doge though, Ezio was now the most wanted man in Venice, and was forced to flee the city guards. Returning to Leonardo's workshop, Ezio was directed to the brothel of Sister Teodora, where Antonio was presiding. Under the cover of Carnevale, Ezio made his way to the brothel and begun planning the death of Marco Barbarigo, competing in the four games of Carnevale to win the golden mask that would gain him entrance to Marco's private party. Ezio was successful but found himself denied the golden mask by Marco's cousin Silvio Barbarigo and Marco's personal slave-bodyguard, Dante Moro. However, Ezio was successful in regaining the mask and managed to assassinate Marco, leaving to door open for Agostino, a Barbarigo not entwined with the Templars and ally of Antonio, to legitimately become Doge.

With his quest nearly at an end, Ezio tracked down Silvio Barbarigo and Dante Moro, in the process liberating the mercenary leader, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, and his soldiers. Having tracked the Templars to the city Arsenal, Ezio managed to break in and kill Dante Moro and Silvio Barbarigo, but was astonished to learn that the plot to remove the Doge was merely a distraction so that the Templars could move their vessel to Cyprus, although the reasons for this were unknown to Ezio.

Induction into the Order and later years
Two more years passed before word of the Templar vessel reached Ezio once again, when Rosa brought him a shipping manifest detailing the return of the ship that very day. Sneaking into the Arsenal, Ezio watched as a Templar soldier carrying a Piece of Eden disembarked from the ship and made his way to a Templar base in the city. Following the soldier, Ezio assassinated and impersonated the guard, carrying the Piece of Eden to a meeting with Rodrigo Borgia himself. Finally able to confront the man ultimately responsible for the deaths of his father and brothers, Ezio spurned the Templar Grandmaster for the non-appearance of the supposed "prophet" detailed in the Codex prophecy. Borgia responded, proudly naming himself the prophet before engaging Ezio in battle. The battle was short and Ezio easily bested the Templar. On the backfoot, Borgia called upon the city guards and insulted the assassin for the lack of "his people" showing up.

At this very moment Mario Auditore, Antonio, Paola, Teodora, La Volpe and Bartolomeo d'Alviano appeared, driving off Borgia and revealing themselves to Ezio as assassins. With the arrival of Niccolò Machiavelli, the Assassin Grandmaster, it as revealed to Ezio that he was in fact the supposed "prophet", and that for the past decade they had all worked together to induct Ezio into the Assassins Order. That night, they all met again and Ezio was formally inducted into the Order.

Over the next few years Ezio continued to serve the Assassins faithfully, defending Forlì from the Orsi brothers and defeating the Dominican priest Girolamo Savonarola during his purge of Florence in 1498. In 1491, at the behest of Antonio, Ezio helped to rescue the Spanish-Genoan explorer Christoffa Corombo.

The following year (1499), the assassins finally came together once more at the Villa Auditore, with the Piece of Eden and the completed Codex in hand. Using the two objects, they discovered the location of the Vault to be in Rome, specifically, beneath the Vatican. Unfortunately, Rodrigo Borgia had become Pope in 1492, although Mario believed he had only done so to gain access to the Papal Staff, another of the Pieces of Eden. Undeterred, Ezio traveled to Rome with a mission to assassinate Rodrigo Borgia.

Fighting his way along the entire length of the Passetto di Borgo, Ezio snuck into the Sistine Chapel and struck at Borgia from above. About to deal the killing blow, Borgia surprised Ezio by using the Staff to blast him away and drain the energy of those in the room. Ezio, possessing the Apple, was immune from the Staff's effects and the two engaged in a duel. Ezio invoked history by using the same technique Al Mualim utilized in his duel against Altaïr in 1191, by seemingly creating multiple clones with the Apple. Ezio seemingly bested Borgia before being stabbed in the abdomen and left to die as Borgia took the Apple and fled to the Vault. Outside the Vault, Ezio watched as Borgia tried in vain to open it. Laying down his arms, Ezio challenged and defeated Borgia in a fist fight, obtaining possession of both the Staff and the Apple, but refusing to take Borgia’s life.

Killing you won't bring my family back... I am done.

Entering the Vault, Ezio stood in shock as he was confronted by a hologram-esque individual naming herself "Minerva", and claiming to be one of "Those Who Came Before"; Ezio was further confounded when the hologram sought not to speak to Ezio, but through Ezio, to an unseen figure named Desmond, before leaving abruptly and Ezio with many questions. After returning from Rome, Ezio sealed his Piece of Eden under the statue of Altaïr at the Villa Auditore.

At some point after this event, Ezio made his way to Spain once more, this time to liberate his fellow assassins in the country, who were being persecuted by the Templars under the guise of a religious inquisition.

Ezio was a young Florentine nobleman who lived during the 15th and 16th century. Unlike his ancestor Altaïr, he was a brought up without knowing of the assassins' existence. A seducer of women and a playful man, Ezio possessed acrobatic skills beyond what most had, save for his brother and father. Having left school at an early age, Ezio was without a formal education, perhaps explaining his playful nature. He came from an affluent background and had many friends until the deaths of his father and brothers drove him out of Florence. Forced to protect his mother and sister, Ezio became an Assassin, exacting revenge on the conspirators who had betrayed his family and plotted to seize both Florence and Venice.

Quick to anger, Ezio often allowed his emotions to overcome him, going so far as to disrespect the corpse of Vieri de' Pazzi just after his death. However, Ezio did manage to gain control of his anger, and by the time he had become a Master Assassin, could control it almost completely.
Equipment and Skills
Ezio Auditore da Firenze was a highly skilled assassin during the Italian renaissance and a leader amongst the Order of Assassins. A master of multiple fields, including theft, blending, armed and unarmed combat, free-running and long-distance combat; he is able to use a variety of weapons including two hidden blades, the longsword, throwing knives and more. Born with the ability to use Eagle Vision, Ezio could access the ability to instinctively differentiate friend from foe.

An explorer, throughout his quests, Ezio scoured the cities in search of Codex pages and seals from the six assassins tombs spread across northern Italy. Ezio's obtainment of the Codex pages allowed Leonardo di Vinci to upgrade his weaponry, including the addition of a wrist gauntlet, wheel lock firearm concealed beneath his left hidden blade, and a poison needle inside the other. Through the collection of the six tomb seals, Ezio gained access to the armor created by his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. Ezio is also a free-runner, possibly taught by his brother Federico, and he uses this often to his advantages against the guards and various other enemies.

Romantic Life
Ezio was also well known for his womanizing skills. Even though he constantly runs after women, he would have a more serious relationship with two women during the time he will be an assassin.

At the beginning of the game, Ezio has a relationship with Cristina Vespucci, a young Florentine beauty. After racing with Federico, Ezio enters Cristina's room from the window and sleeps with her. It is the only interaction we see with these two characters in the game, but the novel expands their story: When Ezio leaves Florence for two years, he and Cristina will still love each other deeply, even when she marries, probably thinking Ezio would never come back. Ezio and Cristina will meet again after those two years. But several years later, Girolamo Savonarola's men kill Cristina which deeply hurts Ezio.

When Ezio arrives in Venice for the first time, he is robbed by an unkown young woman. Later the same day, an archer shoots her in the leg as she was trying to scale the Palazzo della Seta. Ezio being there, he helps her and learns that her name is Rosa and that she is a member of the city's thieves guild. At first, Rosa's attitude towards Ezio is very aggressive and unfriendly but after he saves her, she becomes much more pleasant with him. Like Ezio and Cristina, the only things that happen between those two in the game are some flirts, but in the novel, Rosa and Ezio have a much more intimate relationship as the two will often kiss each other.

Ezio also attracted and was attracted by other women, though his relationship with them may not have been very important. It is sure that Ezio had many love interests with numerous Florentine girls before the beginning of the game. For example, at the ending of the short film Assassin's Creed: Lineage we can see Ezio seducing an unknown girl and at the beginning of the game, Ezio says to Vieri de' Pazzi that her sister seemed "quite satisfied with the handling he gave her earlier".

When first arriving in Forlì to find a way to Venice, Ezio encounters Caterina Sforza. Caterina was trapped on a small island and needed help. Right after Ezio had rescued Caterina she repaid the favor by granting him passage to Venice. She also promised Ezio that the next time he returned to Forli, it would be her "pleasure" to invite him over. Later, when sailing for Venice, Ezio says to Leonardo that she is his future conquest and his type of woman. Leonardo then tells him about Caterina's importance. The fact that Ezio may have had a romance with her is still discussed for she is an important historical figure.

During a genetic memory known as "Horseplay", Ezio encounters a girl named Amelia. During this encounter, Amelia is telling a friend of her's that any stranger could beat his horseriding speed record. Ezio claims that he can do so and after beating the record, a seduced Amelia sleeps with him. Until now it is unknown if Ezio maintained a relationship with Amelia. During Sequence 10 while trying to acquire the Golden Mask, Ezio is seen flirting with many of Sister Theodora's Courtesans. After the CTF Challenge, when Ezio goes up to accept his victory, he is seen going up with a Courtesan and after assassinating Marco Barbarigo and escaping to the brothel, Ezio is seen flirting with Sister Theodora who invites several of her girls to "comfort" Ezio.

Trivia
*The Italian name 'Ezio' derives from the Greek word 'Aetos', which means "Eagle", similar to Altaïr whose name means "The Flying One".
*Unlike Altaïr (who had his ring finger removed as a commitment to make way for the Hidden Blade), Ezio has all ten fingers; a modification to the Hidden Blade made by Altaïr sometime after he defeated Al-Mualim making this possible. Leonardo da Vinci deciphered a Codex Page written by Altaïr on which said modification was illustrated. Instead of removing their ring finger, Assassins now have a mark burned into the ring finger as a sign of their lineage.
*It is stated in the Philosophical Codex that after Altaïr defeated Al-Mualim in 1191 and became the leader, the Assassins were forced to realize the scope of their fight against the Templars, and had to abandon many of their traditions: like the removal of the ring finger and the ban on using poison, in order to survive.
*Ezio also uses a wheellock firearm, based off of a design found in the Codex pages; historically a type of weapon that didn't develop until just after the time-frame of the game, some of the first wheellock firearms were, in actuality, designed by da Vinci.
*Ezio's face in Assassin's Creed II seems to be a mixture of Francisco Randez (Desmond's and Altaïr's model) and Devon Bostick's from Lineage .
*It would appear that Ezio remained unaware of his bloodline, and that he is a descendant of Altaïr, despite learning about him in Monteriggioni. Ezio never truly understood why he was such a successful assassin himself.
*Ezio is 40 years old in 1499 (15 years older than Altaïr's age in 1191); the same age as his father upon his death in 1476.
*If you move the camera to a certain angle in the game, Ezio's face has barely aged, except for the beard, even if you played through 20+ years of his life. His voice does deepen and mature through time, though, making him sound calmer and talk slower.
*Just like Altaïr and Desmond, Ezio has a scar on his mouth, acquired after the mission "Boys Will Be Boys", when Vieri De Pazzi threw the rock at his face during the first memory sequence.
*Of all the characters in Assassin's Creed II that appeared in Assassin's Creed: Lineage, Ezio is the only character whose character model isn't based off of the actor in Lineage. This is because, as mentioned above, Ezio, in addition to Altaïr and Desmond, is based off of Francisco Randez. All other characters, such as Giovanni, Uberto, and even Petruccio are based off of the actors in Lineage.
*The Ezio in Assassin's Creed Lineage bears little resemblance to the Ezio in the beginning of Assassin's Creed II. Both in physical appearance and personality.
*Ezio, when countering (at least with his fists) will appear to have blank, soulless eyes (no iris or pupil), but only during the counter animation.

The Vault is one of the "Temples" left by Those Who Came Before, but their exact purpose is still under speculation. Minerva's message is that the Vault's contain some sort of assistance or research in staving of a repeat of the Catastrophe that has occurred before.

Originally, it was thought by the Spaniard that the Vault contained the living God, and he wished to overthrow him and control everything. What WAS found in the Vault however, was quite different.

It appears that only a combination of different Pieces of Eden can open it, and are built to only allow specific people to enter, such as Ezio, who was named a "prophet". In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio enters the vault under the Vatican and opens the Vault door by holding the staff which has a Piece of Eden attached to it. In the Vatican vault there are images on the wall that only appear when Ezio comes near them detailing other Vault's locations; this is the true "data" of Minerva's genetic transmission. We can clearly see a step pyramid so there's the possibility of a Vault in Mesoamerica or a ziggurat of Mesopotamia or even the ancient Temple of Borobudur in Indonesia.

When Ezio opens the vault, dozens of what seem to be cuneiform runes or glyphs of some kind light up all around him, and an image of Minerva appears in a holographic manner. She begins to speak of how she is not a God, but simply came before humans, being more advanced in technology. She then says of how 'those who came before' created humans, but faced rebellion( seen in subject 16's truth video). She explains how both the humans, now free, and those who came before, fought a war. She states that she is the last of those who came before. Though those who came before were powerful, the humans had larger numbers, as Minerva described it. Then, after this, she speaks of a great geological disaster that wiped out a great portion of life on earth, caused by the sun, and that those who came before built temples all over the world, like the vault, that could prevent the disaster happening again. Throughout the speech, Ezio appears confused as to what Minerva is talking about, as she admits that she is not talking to him, but through him. She then says,'The rest is up to you, Desmond' seemingly knowing that Desmond would access the memory centuries later in the Animus (noted by the fact that Minerva would always look straight at the camera and never Ezio unless she directly addresses him). Minerva says, that as the prophet, Ezio has done his part. The 'hologram' disappears, leaving both Desmond and Ezio confused, while Ezio shouting that he has so many questions, but said questions were unfortunately not answered.
What the fuck?
Desmond Miles is the main protagonist of the Assassin's Creed series and the descendant of a long line of ancestors, who swear their allegiance to the Assassin Order. He is initially forced to use a machine, called the Animus, by Abstergo Industries – the modern front of the Knights Templar – to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr ibn La-Ahad during the Crusader era, in their quest to locate the "Apple", a "Piece of Eden."

Eventually escaping with the aid of the modern day Assassins, Desmond once again uses an improved Animus to explore the memories of his second ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, so as to learn the ways of the Assassins in a much quicker way than normal.

Biography
Early life
Desmond Miles was born in 1987 at an Assassin "hideout" in the desert, an "off the grid" compound with a population of 30 people, much like the city of Masyaf, where he was destined to be trained as an Assassin. However, at the age of 16, Desmond fled the hideout, claiming that "he wanted to see the rest of the world," tired of his repressive parents and inability to leave the compound. He later told Lucy Stillman that he had no regrets over leaving his parents, because as far as he was concerned, they were his "wardens." At some point after leaving the hideout, Desmond became a bartender. Aware of the Knights Templar, and wanting to avoid both them and the Assassins, Desmond never used his real name and used only cash to purchase things. He was eventually found, however, traced through a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license. He was then brought to Abstergo

In September 2012, Desmond Miles was kidnapped by Abstergo Industries, a pharmaceutical company and front for the Knights Templar, for use as a test subject in the Animus, a device that can read the memories of Desmond's ancestors through the "genetic memory" left behind in their descendants' DNA. At first Warren Vidic, attempted to pry the information he wanted from Desmond's mind, but was met with failure due to Desmond’s subconscious lack of confidence in accessing that specific memory. As such, Desmond was forced to move back to an eariler memory that he could access and move forward from there; this then allowed Desmond to simulate the experiences of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. Whilst he claimed to be nothing more than a bartender, Vidic reveals that they knew of his past as an Assassin, forcing Desmond to finally admit his past life. Vidic and Lucy Stillman tell Desmond that they're trying to access a certain memory, but Desmond's subconscious is restraining. Vidic warns Desmond that if he refuses to assist them, they will induce a coma, continue their work, and, when done with Desmond, leave him to die. Without much choice, Desmond agrees to help them.

Desmond was made to explore the genetic memories of his ancestor – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, a member of a clan of Assassins during the Third Crusade, specifically Altaïr's experiences during the year 1191 – and over several days does so under the watchful eye of Warren Vidic. During the nights however, Desmond discovers that he is able to explore the lab he is being held in, accessing the Animus computer and, after stealing his keycard, the personal computer of Warren Vidic. Through these e-mails, Desmond learns of a Subject 16 who had begun suffering from a "bleeding effect" due to prolonged exposure to the Animus, as well as tidbits of information from the outside world. Eventually, with the aid of Lucy, the Assassins learned of Desmond's capture and attempted to liberate him, the gunfire being heard through an intercom device, although the rescue attempt failed. Vidic boasts that those Assassins were in fact the last of the Assassin; their desert hidehout having previously been destroyed. Lucy Stillman's actions, however, suggest otherwise, and when Desmond asks if Lucy knows anything about his parents, she responds by saying that she doesn't know, but that they probably escaped. During this discussion, Lucy reveals herself to be a undercover member of the Assassins.

Desmond eventually achieves Vidic's goal, and discovers the location of numerous Pieces of Eden. Executives of Abstergo Industries order his execution, but his life is saved by Stillman's intervention, who asks to keep Desmond alive in order to reaccess his memories if need be. After the executives leave, Desmond suddenly accesses the "eagle vision" of his ancestor Altaïr, seeing Warren and Lucy for their true allegiances, as well as countless scrawled messages and puzzles on the floor of the main laboratory.

At the beginning of Assassin's Creed II Desmond is still being held within the laboratory at Abstergo, continuing directly from the last game from a couple of hours. Lucy suddenly arrives, covered in blood and demanding Desmond to get into the Animus before Abstergo discovers what she's done. Desmond, rather confused, agrees and, inside the Animus, experiences the birth of another of his ancestors, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a joint ancestor of his and Subject 16's. He is quickly pulled out, though, and both make their escape.

They were quickly spotted by Abstergo security forces and forced into an engagement which Lucy quickly ends, allowing them to continue on stealthily. The two soon enter a large open room filled with office blocks, and lined with a large number of Animus machines, although Desmond's questions about them are met with silence. Desmond once instinctively called upon his recently activated Eagle Vision when, at the door to an elevator, a password was needed that Lucy did not have. Once in the carpark the two are halted by yet more Abstergo guards, but are able to overcome them and escape.

Arriving at the assassin's hideout, Desmond was introduced to two more Assassins – Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane – who have been working with Lucy over the years. Lucy told Desmond that they wanted him to become trained in the ways of the Assassin, and thanks to the Bleeding Effect, they could achieve this in a matter of days, although it required him learning the ways of an Assassin through a new ancestor; Ezio. Desmond agrees to help almost immediately, and is quickly plugged in the Animus 2.0.

After learning the ways of the Assassin through Ezio's memories Desmond was retracted from the Animus, partly to test his retention of the memories, but also to prevent the mental degradation that Subject 16 had suffered from being in the Animus for too long at a time. Tasking him with initiating security protocols around the Assassin hideout, Lucy left it to Desmond to work out how to reach them through the use of his Eagle Vision and newfound Free Running skills. Just as he begun, however, he started suffering vivid hallucinations of the Crusader era. At first the vision were short, and that they were nothing to worry about, but after completing the task Desmond was incapacitated as the visions became more real. Taken back to Acre, Desmond followed the memories of Altaïr once again, this time without the use of the Animus, and watches as Altaïr and Maria Thorpe conceive their first child, Desmond's next ancestor.

The next day, Desmond had recovered from the experiences and returned to the Animus, neglecting to tell the Assassins what had happened. He continued the watch over the genetic memories of Ezio Auditore, despite at one time being thrown out by a "corrupted memory sequence". Eventually they learn that Ezio's arch-nemesis, the Templar Grandmaster Rodrigo Borgia had, in 1492 become Pope Alexander VI, so as to gain access to yet another Piece of Eden, the Papal Staff and the Vault. As Ezio's story began to conclude, Desmond and the Assassins watched deep within the Vault beneath the Vatican. Ezio found himself confronted by a hologram-esque "god" who called herself Minerva; Minerva warns the Assassins of the end of the world, as well as retelling the story of the war between "Those Who Came Before", and their human subjects. The Assassins are shocked when Minerva addresses Desmond by name, confusing even Ezio, and it is revealed that Minerva is in fact talking to Desmond through Ezio. Desmond is quickly pulled out of the Animus, though, seeing the three rushing to collect their belongings, the Templars having found their location.

Immediately after getting out of the Animus, Lucy tosses Desmond a Hidden Blade with the Assassin's emblem on it, and asks for his assistance in covering the escape. Making their way into the warehouse, Vidic appears, flanked by Abstergo security officials with the intent of reclaiming Desmond. The two assassins fight off the Templars with Desmond, now fully synchronized with Ezio, masterfully using his Hidden Blade to kill many of the guards. With his entourage eliminated, Vidic is left to confront Desmond on his own, but instead retreats, promising that their victory is only temporary. The four Assassins then flee north, and Desmond is hooked up to the Animus inside the van and told to continue to search through his memories for anything useful. As Desmond's hooked up, the other Assassins begin to discuss the nature of Minerva and her talk.

Characteristics, personality and skills
Despite his amazing resemblance to both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Desmond has very little in common with either of them. Although he was born into the Assassin's Order, Desmond fled early on and lived his life independent from them; keeping to himself much of the time and preferring to stay off the radar. The only recorded incident of Desmond actually publicly appearing was for a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license, which in turn allowed Abstergo Industries to locate him. A discreet individual, Desmond did not wear extravagant clothing, preferring only a white hooded jacket and jeans. Interestingly, when up, the hood exhibited a beak-like feature similar to both Ezio and Altaïr.

Desmond was a gruff and cynical individual, who held a serious outlook on life, having been aware of the existence of both Templars and Assassins all his life, although he was unaware of Abstergo Industries being a Templar company. Despite this, he was not above jesting over his situation, and would occasionally make jokes, although they rarely elicited a good reaction. After his emancipation from Abstergo, Desmond's demeanor became considerably more relaxed and spent a noticeable amount of time flirting with Lucy.

As he was forced to relive the memories of his ancestor Altaïr, Desmond begun to pick up subtle skills due to the Bleeding Effect; these included eagle vision, as well as possibly the ability to eavesdrop and pickpocket. Later on, upon willingly exploring the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore, Desmond once again begun to fully adopt the skills he was exposed to; this time including free-running, improved hand-to-hand skills, and Hidden Blade combat.

Trivia
*He is modeled after Francisco Randez and voiced by Nolan North.

*Although he is the main character in both games, players spend little time actually controlling him.

*Desmond possesses the same scar on his mouth as his ancestors Altaïr and Ezio did. He also looks a lot like both of them and he is 25 years of age in 2012, the same as Altair's age in 1191.

*Desmond's clothes are similar to those worn by both Ezio and Altaïr, albeit in a more modern style. He has a hood (although it is not worn over his head), and his jacket is white - similar to Altair's robes, and Ezio's clothing, which is originally referred to as "Assassin White". Concept Art of him with his hood up show that it has the "eagle-beak" shape his ancestors' clothes had.

*Desmond acquires a Hidden Blade at the conclusion of Assassin's Creed II. The original owner of the blade is uncertain, but it shares the same design as the one Ezio inherited from his father, Giovanni. Perhaps the design became of standard use for Assassins after Ezio defeated Rodrigo Borgia.

*Desmond obtains Eagle Vision from his ancestor Altaïr and his fighting and free-running skills from his ancestor Ezio through the Bleeding Effect in the Animus.

*At times during the game, Desmond's eyes appear to be yellowish-gold, as do Ezio's, greatly resembling the eyes of an eagle, a bird of prey spotted throughout the Assassin's Creed series.

*Interestingly enough, the etymology of Desmond's name ("The World") is not related to neither of his ancestors, whereas Altaïr's and Ezio's names shared similar kind of meanings; Altaïr's being "The Flying One" and Ezio's "The Eagle".
The Truth is a sidequest in Assassin's Creed II that can be unlocked by uncovering glyphs throughout the world, and solving the puzzles that accompany each glyph. There are 20 in all, and successfully unlocking each one will give a bit more insight into the Origins of the Templars, the Assassins, and the Piece of Eden.

In the video, a naked Adam and Eve are seen running from something. They move through an open area which may be The Garden of Eden. The scenery is a mixture between flora, a shiny blue material that resembles glass, and a white surface which sounds like stone. The garden is decorated in a very futuristic style which is a strong contrast against the biblical setting. Moving through a circular automatic door, Adam and Eve use free-running (similar to that used by the Assassins) to climb a large, futuristic looking building. While they are climbing the building, a shadow of a huge humanoid and apparently floating being can be seen holding a Piece of Eden to control several human slaves. These workers appear to be in an environment similar to that of a metal refinery, with one slave in the foreground clearly using a hammer to shape a metal object. The brief appearance of the shadow is visually similar to Minerva, sharing the flowing clothes and glowing emblem on the headwear. Adam and Eve continue climbing until they reach the roof of the building. The camera zooms outwards, revealing many other futuristic buildings surrounding them. Further in the background, a mountain is clearly visible, while there is little other elevation in land elsewhere. The terrain is lush, and large forest boundaries are visible. Eve can then be seen to be holding a Piece of Eden. Eve then says "Adam, I have it!", Adam acknowledges Eve, and she then yells: "Look out!" as an unknown, unseen person appears behind them. The memory suddenly ends, and binary code flashes up. The numbers read: "EDEN"

These glyphs are based upon the markings left behind in Assassin's Creed, which were left behind by Subject 16, and written in his blood. Many of these glyphs can be recognized as the Cryptic Messages from the previous game, and can only be seen with Eagle Vision .
Trivia
*It is very interesting to note and speculate how Subject 16 managed to get a hold of this video. It is also very probable (considering 16's strong knowledge on the subject) that he knew a lot more than what the video depicted, considering at one Glyph he says "There, do you see what's going on...? *Sigh* not yet, but you will". Meaning that he might have known a lot about the events that appeared in the video, and beyond.

*Altaïr himself saw the video at one point in his life. As in one of the codex pages, he says the video is the most troubling thing his eyes have ever witnessed. It is clear that he had watched the video, possibly shown to him by the Apple of Eden, describing all the things that happen in the video. Speaking of screaming that still echoes in his mind, flame and fire, and tall metal towers that are overlooked by a mountain. Oddly enough, he does not actually mention or reference to Adam and Eve in any way while speaking of it. This may be due to the fact, as explained in other Codex Pages, that Ältair is stubbornly refusing to believe in the Old Testament and it's explanations, including the creational theory, so he denies these two people being the Adam and Eve of the Bible. This may also explain how Subject 16 knows about the video, if 16 is another descendant of Altaïr, then it's possible Abstergo ripped the content of this video through the Animus, as the same glitches show up through the video when Desmond was in the Animus. Subject 16 likely saw the same as Altaïr, and succeeded to obtain the data Abstergo ripped from his memory and hid it for others to find, nevertheless, 16's knowledge on the matter seems to be larger on scale then what the video showed.

*It looks like the mountain in the background is Mount Kilimanjaro, as the mountain is visually identical to the mountain. The image appears to be taken from the one in Wikimedia, except that it's horizontally flipped. This also makes sense because Mount Kilimanjaro is in Africa, and the origins of humans are said to be in Africa, more specifically mid-Africa, which is also roughly the location of Kilimanjaro. Also, one of the dots on the codex map in AC2 is in Africa, at roughly the area of Mount Kilimanjaro. Further adding to this theory is that Lucy herself said that Vidic tagged events in the Middle East and Ancient Africa.

*It's possible that Subject 16 is a descendant of Adam and Eve and that Altair ( along with Ezio and Desmond since they are both descendants of Altair) could be related to Adam and Eve.

*It is possible that the video is taken from a time period predating the war that Minerva referred to, when humans were enslaved by 'Those Who Came Before'. It is likely then that Adam and Eve escaping Eden (the haven in which 'gods' and humans lived) sparked the human rebellion which led to the cataclysmic event also mentioned by Minerva

*At the end of the video, a block of binary code can be seen briefly. The code is "01000101 01000100 01000101 01001110" which translates as EDEN.
*The viewing angle of the camera might be Subject 16. These events are supposed to have happened in the past, so it is possible that if Subject 16 is really desecended from Adam and Eve, he could use the Animus to go back in time and live these events. It also says that this is Session 12 in the Animus at the start of the video.
