:For the multiplayer character in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, see Doctor.

Doctors are one of the new features in Assassin's Creed II. Found on the streets of every city in black robes and mask with a beak-like shape, they can either refill Ezio's synchronization Bar for a fee, or sell him Medicine that can be carried and used later. They also sell him vials of poison for his Poison Blade.

Doctors are perhaps the most vital service in Assassin's Creed II as they sell medicine that will heal you wherever your current location is.

Appearance and historical relation
The doctors in Assassins Creed II, as usual for their kind after one of the deadliest pandemics in human history (known as The Black Death), dress in a long black cloak covered with a coating of wax, and a very primitive beak-shaped plague mask, although some doctors do not wear the mask.

The Black Death plague peaked in Europe during the 14th century and is said to have killed 30% to 60% percent of Europe's population. That reduced the world's population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in 1400.

The reason they wear the mask is because they thought it would stop the plague from affecting them. Some doctors didn't believe that, hence, them not wearing masks. The mask is also known as a Medico Della Peste, and was sometimes even worn in Venice's Carnevale.

Heal
Doctors can replenish all the user's health by paying him a paltry sum of 50 florins. The price from the Doctor in Monteriggioni for his healing services however, decreases as his stall becomes renovated.

Apothecary
Medicine
Doctors sell Medicine (75ƒ each) that acts as a healing item that can be carried with you anywhere you go. The number of Medicine vials the user can carry at one time increases when a lager Medicine Pouch is purchased from a Tailor. In game, the medicine itself is said to be smelling salts that act as painkillers. This is the only way to heal the user other than an automatic healing at the start of most memories.

Poison
Doctors sell Poison vials for a sum of 175 florins. When Ezio asks Leonardo why Doctors would sell Poison, he replies that, "when given in high doses, that which cures can kill." Poison is available only after upgrading Ezio's Hidden Blade with the Poison Blade. The Poison is useful for players who do not want to assassinate a target quickly or for those who rather create a distraction. Poison is a potent weapon. It offers one-use kills, but it is easily used on any target and runs less of a risk of exposing the user.

Trivia
* Ezio can't harm doctors, but the first doctor encountered in the game (when with Federico), is the only one that can be attacked and killed, though only with blades, (sword, hidden blade, dagger, etc.), doing so doesn't alert guards, and when killed, he rises again. A video of this 'bug' can be found on this link.
* Some times blacksmiths will also be able to restore some health when armor becomes damaged. Repairing the armor will replace some health.
* Not all doctors have a mask on their face. This could either be a glitch or intentional doing.
* In the novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance the doctor that Federico intruduces to Ezio is their family doctor, Dottore Ceresa. Also instead of having a small stand like other doctors in the game, he has his own store.

Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli (3 May 1469 – 21 June 1527) was an Italian philosopher, writer, and is considered one of the main founders of modern political science. He was a diplomat, political philosopher, musician, and playwright, but foremost he was a civil servant of the Florentine Republic.

Description
"Niccolo di Bernardo dei machiavelli, I am an assassin. trained in the ancient ways to safeguard mankinds evolution. just like you. and each one of us here."

Niccolò was in secret a member of the Assassin's Order, and the leader of the Florentine Republic[1]. This was perhaps why he was such a secretive person, to not reveal too much about himself.

Niccolò and the other Assassins were to attack Rodrigo Borgia, who was at that point in possession of the Apple of Eden. Unbeknownst to them, Ezio Auditore da Firenze also knew about Rodrigo having the Apple and had already attacked him. The other Assassins went to help him fend off Rodrigo's guards. Eventually, Rodrigo ran away, leaving the Apple behind. Niccolò revealed himself along with the other Assassins, who had helped Ezio assassinate the Templars before.

Niccolò was present at Ezio's initiation into the Assassin Brotherhood, performing a Leap of Faith along with the other Assassins.

Eventually, Niccolò helped Ezio defend Caterina Sforza and the city of Forlì. He also aided him during the Bonfire of the Vanities, in which Girolamo Savonarola acquired the Apple of Eden.

In 1500, Niccolò accompanied Ezio to Rome.

Trivia
*It is possible that the game's developers chose Machiavelli because of his supposed character during the Renaissance, as he is thought to have been a very secretive person.
*However, he did write several books about how he would have preferred the government to take control of the people, which seems to be a Templar belief, not an Assassin belief.
*In real life, Machiavelli witnessed the execution of Girolamo Savonarola, and wrote about it the night of the event. The location, or even the name of these writings are unknown today.
*In reality, many historians speculate that Machiavelli may actually have been an evil man, with intentions of controlling Italy, instead of just serving its people. A detailed description can be found here.
*The debate over Machiavelli's true intentions are often disorted due to the fact that many people concentrate on "Il Principe" (The Prince), which was one relatively short book, written in a few months. The Prince was written for a specific reason during a specific time in Italian history (a period when the Medici family had the opportunity to build a strong Italian state in central Italy and drive out the 'barbarians').
*Machiavelli also wrote a thesis called the "Discourses on Livy". This thesis (which was written over a significant period of his life) reflected Machiavelli's more republican notions of government, and is a far more comprehensive thesis than the Prince. Together the Discourses and the Prince show us that, in real life, he was an individual who preferred a republican government, but was prepared to accept a principality if it ensured the survival of the state.
*The facts that the fictional Machiavelli was the leader of Florence's Mercenaries doesn't match with his real-life counterpart. In real life, Machiavelli was against the use of Mercenaries, because he believed they were unreliable. However it is possible that Mercenaries are meant to represent the Florentine militia that Machiavelli commanded in real life. This is supported by the fact that he made complains about Mercenaries in Bonfire of the Vanities.
*Machiavelli called Rodrigo Borgia/Pope Alexander VI a very successful politician, because he was the prototype of a leader who has no scruples to reach his target.
*The discrepancies between Machiavelli's beliefs in the game, and in real life, could be the Templars using their power to rewrite history, and even Machiavelli's own books, to portray him as a bad man.

*It is also possible that Machiavelli deliberatly created his reputation of following Templar beliefs in order to become a sleeper agent among the Templars. A successful one too, as he historically had good relations with the Borgia family.
*Some historians believe that 'The Prince' was a satirical literature targeting the tyrannous leaders at the time. It is believed that Machiavelli wished the common people to be acquainted with autocracy's means of governing so that they could fight against it.
*Despite the tender age of 19 Machiavelli was the presumed head of the Assassin Order when he initiated Ezio in the Order.
*Historically in 1502 Machiavelli was sent on a diplomatic mission to Cesare Borgia, in game this could simply be an attempt to get closer to the son of Rodrigo Borgia.
