Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger was the son of Marcus Junius Brutus the Elder and Servilia Caepionis. His father was killed by Pompey the Great in dubious circumstances after he had taken part in the rebellion of Lepidus; his mother was the half-sister of Cato the Younger, and later became Julius Caesar's mistress. Some sources refer to the possibility of Caesar being his real father. Brutus' uncle, Quintus Servilius Caepio adopted him in about 59 BC, and Brutus was known officially for a time as '''Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus''' before he reverted to using his birth-name. Brutus held his uncle in high regard and his political career started when he became an assistant to Cato, during his governorship of [[Cyprus]]. During this time, he enriched himself by lending money at high rates of interest. He returned to [[Rome]] a rich man, where he married Claudia Pulchra. From his first appearance in the Senate, Brutus aligned with the Optimates (the conservative faction) against the First Triumvirate of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Pompey Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and Gaius Julius Caesar. Around 45 BC, many senators began to fear Caesar's growing power following his appointment as dictator for life.<ref name="Wikipedia: Marcus Junius Brutus" /> Additionally, the Assassins discovered that the [[SPQR]] was secretly a [[Templars|Templar]] organization.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> Brutus was appointed to devise the conspiracy against Caesar by the other Assassins.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

At some point, Brutus discovered and explored the [[Colosseum Vault|vault]] hidden beneath what would eventually become [[Santa Maria Aracoeli]]. He chose the temple concealing the entrance to the vault as a meeting place for the conspirators, and would include a drawing of the chamber itself within his scrolls. Inside the chamber, he was enlightened with visions of what would happen after Caesar's assassination.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

Encouraged by these visions, Brutus devised the plan for the assassination. His wife was the only woman privy to the plot. The conspirators planned to carry out their plot on the Ides of March (March 15) that same year. On that day, Caesar was delayed going to the Senate because his wife, Calpurnia Pisonis, tried to convince him not to go. The Assassins feared the plot had been found out. Brutus persisted, however, waiting for Caesar at the Senate, and allegedly still chose to remain even when a messenger brought him news that would otherwise have caused him to leave. When Caesar finally did come to the Senate, they attacked him. Publius Servilius Casca Longus was allegedly the first to attack Caesar with a blow to the shoulder, which Caesar blocked. However, upon seeing Brutus was with the Assassins, he covered his face with his toga and resigned himself to his fate. The Assassins attacked in such numbers that they even wounded one another. After the assassination, the Senate passed an amnesty on the Assassins. This amnesty was proposed by Caesar's friend and co-consul [[wikipedia:Marcus Antonius|Marcus Antonius]]. Nonetheless, uproar among the population caused Brutus and the other Assassins to leave Rome. Brutus settled in Crete from 44 to 42 BC, but was later defeated in battle and upon fleeing, committed suicide. His last words were ''"By all means must we fly; not with our feet, however, but with our hands."'' Brutus also uttered the well-known verse calling down a curse upon Antonius (Plutarch repeats this from the memoirs of Publius Volumnius): ''"Forget not, Zeus, the author of these crimes."''<ref name="Wikipedia: Marcus Junius Brutus" />

After Brutus' death, his followers tried to use the [[The Shroud|Shroud]] to bring him back. Brutus returned to life for a very brief moment, before inevitably dying once again. The attempt failed because the Shroud can reanimate a body, but it cannot recreate life.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Some time prior to 1500 AD, the [[Followers of Romulus]] discovered the temple, and found the armor and dagger within. They took the artifacts, hiding them in a chamber in the tunnels beneath [[Colle Palatino]]. The chamber was to only be opened with six keys, spread across various landmarks throughout Rome, hidden in some of the scrolls that Brutus had written concerning his involvement in the conspiracy to kill Caesar. In 1503, the then-Grand Master of the Assassin Order [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] managed to obtain all six keys and retrieved the armor from its chamber.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

To enter the Vault's central chamber, one must speak aloud the number "72." After this, the tall pedestal can only accessed by jumping on a series of thin platforms and levers that only appear to activate when a person such as [[Desmond Miles]] or [[Ezio Auditore]], touches them. This is implied to be because of their being descendants of Those Who Came Before and the [[Humans|human race]]'s crossbreeding, which would therefor allow them access to the technology through their DNA. After activating all platforms, a set of stairs rise to form an easy path to the [[Piece of Eden]].

The earliest known visitor of the Vault was [[Marcus Junius Brutus]], as evidenced by the [[Scrolls of Romulus]]. While in the Vault, Brutus saw visions of what would happen after [[Gaius Julius Caesar|Julius Caesar]]'s death and was inspired by them. Brutus also made a drawing of the Vault, as well as of the pedestal which would later hold one of the Apples of Eden.

The next known visitor was Ezio Auditore, who knew the password to enter, although how he knew the password is unknown. Upon his visit, he placed the Apple of Eden on the pedestal for safe keeping, although the reason for why Ezio did this is unknown.

The latest known visitors were Desmond Miles, [[Lucy Stillman]], [[Shaun Hastings]] and [[Rebecca Crane]], who figured out the password from the writing Ezio had left in the [[Villa Auditore]] that could only be seen with [[Eagle Vision]]. While making his way towards the Vault, Desmond met with Juno, who spoke to him four times during his attempt to acquire the Apple of Eden. Out of all the [[Assassins]] present, Desmond was the only one able to see and hear her.

After Desmond activated the stairs and walked up to the Apple of Eden, symbols appeared around all of them. Upon touching the Apple, the other Assassins appeared to be frozen in time and Desmond lost control of his body. Juno took over his actions and forced him to stab Lucy in the abdomen, after which both Desmond and Lucy collapsed to the floor, unconscious.

After [[Fiora Cavazza]] and [[Baltasar de Silva]] had studied the [[Assassins]] for some time, they tried to mimic their techniques and 'create' their own Assassin. They trained Il Lupo to master everything they knew about the Assassins and he was later sent on missions by [[Cesare Borgia]] himself.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Some time later, however, Fiora was betrayed by Cesare and she joined forces with the Assassins. To eliminate any damage made to the Assassin Order, Fiora planned to eliminate Il Lupo. She met with him at their usual rendezvous and said Cesare had assigned him to eliminate a target on a boat out in the water. Il Lupo turned towards the boat, his back facing Fiora. Fiora slit Il Lupo's back with a poisoned weapon, though Il Lupo wouldn't yield. He resisted, but this was a vain effort as the poison quickly starting showing off its effects and Il Lupo succumbed.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Il Lupo appears in the [[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer characters|multiplayer]] of ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]'', under the title of The [[Prowler]].

Despite their service to those who would otherwise suffer, the Assassins were still feared by the general populace, due mainly to their method of ensuring peace. The Assassins were most feared due to their terrifying reputation for taking life in public places, before many witnesses - so as to bring fear into the hearts of those who might abuse their power or corrupt the innocent - before vanishing into the crowd without a trace.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> To aid in this, the Assassins used a particularly efficient weapon for assassinations: the [[Hidden Blade]],<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> a single thrust from which could end the life of its victim.

However, in order to ascertain which death might best assist the Assassins' goals, extensive political knowledge was a must have. Thus, the Assassins remained ever in tune with the ever-changing politics surrounding them. Obtaining information on this was the job of low-level members of the Order, who would be stationed throughout the cities of the world. These [[Informants|spies]] would watch the local nobles and rulers, looking for signs of corruption, or for membership in the Templars. Once gathered, any information was passed on to the Assassins responsible for the actual execution.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />

The Assassins spent their entire lifetime training to kill.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> From an early age, they were taught to observe their surroundings and plan ahead. Combat skills were a must, and its training was continuous, with a focus on bladed weapons of all sorts. However, despite such a concentration on combat, the most important consideration in the Assassins' training was concealment. Stealth was the greatest weapon of the Assassin, and everything about their life (the clothes they wore, where they lived, and even how they walked) emphasized a devotion to it.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> It was essential for an Assassin to be able to reach their target unnoticed, and then slip back into the crowd after they had struck.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />.

Another significant focus of an Assassins' training was maneuverability. By the time an Assassin reached the [[Ranks|rank]] of [[Master Assassin]], he was also a master of an early form of [[Free-Running|parkour]], extensively utilized by the Assassins. In 1191, during the [[Third Crusade]], the [[Syria]]n branch of the Assassin Order was centered in the fortress of [[Masyaf]], deep within the kingdom of the [[wikipedia:Holy Land|Holy Land]]. Led by [[Al Mualim]], the Assassins battled with the [[Templars]] and their leader, [[Robert de Sable]], over ideologies and the means with which to accomplish them. It was during the Third Crusade that the Assassins learned of a Templar interest in an [[First Apple|ancient artifact]], hidden within the catacombs of [[Solomon's Temple]]. It was decided to liberate the treasure from them, and the mission was a success, although a costly one. With the death of [[Kadar A-Sayf|one Assassin]], the severe injury of [[Malik A-Sayf|another]], and the arrival of the Templar army at the gates of Masyaf, the Assassins were nearly overwhelmed by the [[Siege of Masyaf|following battle]]. However, by crushing most of the Templar army under a concealed onslaught of rolling logs, they were able to drive the Templars from the fortress and village below.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

Following the assault, the Assassin blamed for the loss of life that day – [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] – was severely reprimanded, and tasked with removing nine influential individuals, who plagued the Holy Land with their corrupt rule. As Altaïr made his way down the list made up of both [[Crusader]] and [[Saracen]] individuals, he was greatly unsettled by the realization that their goal to bring peace to the people of the Holy Land was just, as he that felt his victims were "misguided perhaps, but pure in motive." This was a view shared by Al Mualim, who agreed with their goals, but felt that their attitude of "the end justifies the means" undermined the good they sought to ensure. As his mission progressed, Altaïr sought to know what bound his victims together, and the discovery that they were all Templars only served to reinforce the Assassin's determination to bring an end to the Templar plot.

By the end of the year, the Assassins were victorious over their Templar enemies. [[Robert de Sable]], [[Grand Master of the Templar Order]], was dead, however the treachery of one of their own had also hit the Assassin Order hard. Al Mualim, [[Grand Master of the Assassin Order]], and a former member of a coalition of ''ten'' Templar leaders, was revealed to be a traitor, and was killed by the very man he had sent to eliminate his fellow Templar conspirators. With Al Mualim dead, Altaïr took over as Grand Master of the Order, leading the Assassins in their attempts to rebuild their strength after the costly conflict.

Eventually, it was decided that the [[Piece of Eden]] was too great a threat to keep in Masyaf, and the decision was made to store it on the island of [[Cyprus]], in the [[Templar Archive|Limassol archives]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines">''[[Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines]]''</ref> However, following the liberation of the island from its Templar rulers, the Piece was kept by Altaïr until he had at least completed his fabled [[Codex]].

The Order continued to thrive, despite being forced to adopt an even more secretive and isolated existence.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> During the time period known as the [[Renaissance]], the Assassin Order had apparently "gone underground." The reason for this is explained inside the Codex pages, where Altaïr states that even though the Templar Order was served a crushing defeat in the Holy Land and Cyprus, they still survived in more inconspicuous ways. As such, Altaïr believed that the Assassins too had to change tactics so as to live on.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Having abandoned the fortress of Masyaf, the Assassins spread out across the [[wikipedia:Mediterranean|Mediterranean]], taking up residence in places like northern [[Italy]] and [[Spain]]. However, the Templars too had done as much, headquartering themselves in [[Rome]]. By 1321, the Assassin Order had successfully integrated itself into modern day life of northern Italy, widely unknown to the average folk. That same year, a young sailor by the name of [[Domenico Auditore|Domenico]], the son of an Assassin, was apprenticed to the poet and Assassin [[Dante Alighieri]], who had been tasked with transporting the Codex of Altaïr from [[Venice]] to Spain.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Crypt">''[[Auditore Family Crypt|Uplay Content - Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Family Crypt]]''</ref> Upon his death, however, the undertaking fell instead to Domenico. During the voyage, pirates under the employ of the Templars ambushed the ship looking for the Codex, consequently killing the wife of Domenico. Fortunately for the Assassins, Domenico managed to break apart the Codex and hide its pages from the pirates before he and his son were forced overboard.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Crypt" />

Eventually returning to Venice, Domenico found his father and his patron, [[Marco Polo]], an ally of the Assassins, dead. Thus, Domenico emptied the bank accounts of Messer Polo, and traveled to the city of [[Florence]] under the assumed name of [[House of Auditore|Auditore]]. He eventually constructed the [[Auditore Family Villa|Auditore Villa]] in the city of [[Monteriggioni]], which became the center of the Assassin Order in Italy.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Crypt" />

Despite the order "modernizing" since the 12<sup>th</sup> Century, they still retained many of the rituals and practices, albeit altered. The practice of removing one's ring finger had been stopped, although the seal of the Order was branded upon the finger instead; such was the induction of [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] in 1487. Although significantly fewer in number, the Assassins were supported by the [[courtesans]], [[thieves]] and [[Mercenary|condottieri]] of Florence and Venice; the guilds of which were each run by a member of the Order.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

During this time period, the Assassins entered another period of increased hostilities with the Templars, who were attempting to overthrow the ruling [[House of Medici]] in Florence, and the [[wikipedia:Doge|Doge]] of Venice. Having already killed the [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza|Duke]] of [[Milano|Milan]]<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref> in 1476, [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Grand Master of the Templar Order, brought the noble families of [[House of Pazzi|Pazzi]], [[House of Barbarigo|Barbarigo]] and [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] together<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage" /> to accomplish his goals. Entering into conflict with the Assassins, Borgia dealt a crippling blow to the Order in 1476, when he executed the experienced warrior [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni Auditore]] and his two sons, [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]] and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]], although a third son, Ezio, managed to escape. With the aid of Ezio, the Assassins were able to counter Borgia's plot over a [[Assassin's Creed II|twenty-three year campaign]], defeating him at every turn.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

In 1487, the Order of Assassins learned that the Templars had retrieved an important artifact from the island of Cyprus, and deemed its capture necessary. Following the artifact from [[L'Arsenale di Venezia]], Ezio managed to overpower and replace the Templar guard carrying the artifact. Under this guise, Ezio met with Borgia himself, and the two engaged in battle. Borgia fled upon the arrival of other Assassins, and the artifact fell once again into the hands of the Assassins. The Assassins of this age, however, were unaware of the nature of the artifact, although they did recognize it as one of the Pieces of Eden mentioned within Altaïr's Codex.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Utilising the mercenaries, thieves and courtesans of [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]], [[La Volpe]] and [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia Auditore]] respectively, Ezio's brotherhood worked to [[Liberation of Roma|combat the influence and power]] of the Borgia family, and by extension the Papacy itself. Headquartered in an underground store-room owned by [[Fabio Orsini]], on [[Tiber Island]] in the centre of Rome, the Assassins begun to spread their influence throughout the city, recruiting those who had been saved by Ezio Auditore. Many undertook a variety of missions across Europe, aiding their brothers in cities such as London, Lisbon, Moscow and Calicut.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

By the 21<sup>st</sup> Century, the world had changed vastly.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Whilst the Order of Assassins had kept to their policy of remote camps and isolation,<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> the Templars had begun to infiltrate society further; taking the form of many corporations such as [[NASA]]<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> and [[Abstergo]]. The Templars continued to search for and investigate the various Pieces of Eden they discovered throughout this period,<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> whilst the Assassins continued their war against them; notably being responsible for the destruction of at least one Templar-controlled base in [[wikipedia:Siberia|Siberia]] in 1908, known in public as the [[Tunguska explosion]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> However, by the year 2012, the Templars, under the guise of their front company [[Abstergo Industries]], had begun kidnapping Assassins or those related to them in an attempt to locate even more Pieces of Eden.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Notable captives included the mysterious [[Subject Sixteen]], and [[Desmond Miles]] - descendants of both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />

Using Desmond, Abstergo managed to obtain a map of the locations of the Pieces of Eden across the globe, and subsequently begun their attempts to claim them. Not long after, the Assassins were able to free Desmond<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> with the aid of [[Lucy Stillman]] (an Assassin who had been working undercover at Abstergo for at least seven years by 2012)<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> as well as obtain their own copy of the map.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Following this, Desmond agreed to aid the Assassins in their quest to defeat Abstergo, mostly for revenge, but also for closure. Utilizing the [[Animus|Animus 2.0]], a copy of the machine used by Abstergo to explore his genetic memories previously,<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> Desmond followed the memories of Ezio Auditore, adopting his skills in combat and free-running, while the rest of the Order concentrated to locating the Pieces of Eden before their Templar counterparts. Despite this, however, the war with the Templars had taken a turn for the worse. With their numbers dwindling, the Order of Assassins was in danger of losing the war.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

As technology progressed, so did the weapons used against the Assassins. By 2011, the Templars were using cell phone towers to track down the Assassins. These tenets permeated every aspect of the Assassins' daily life, as well as their fight for "peace in all things." The Assassins carried out their duties through political, strategic assassination, in the hope that killing one individual would lead to the salvation of thousands. The Assassins believed that they fought on the behalf of those who did not possess the abilities, resources, or knowledge to speak out against those who abused their power.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Despite their service to those who would otherwise suffer, the Assassins were still feared by the general populace, due mainly to their method of ensuring peace. The Assassins were most feared due to their terrifying reputation for taking life in public places, before many witnesses – so as to bring fear into the hearts of those who might abuse their power or corrupt the innocent – before vanishing into the crowd without a trace.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> To aid in this, the Assassins used a particularly efficient weapon for assassinations: the [[Hidden Blade]],<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> a single thrust from which could end the life of its victim.

However, in order to ascertain which death might best assist the Assassins' goals, extensive political knowledge was a must have. Thus, the Assassins remained ever in tune with the ever-changing politics surrounding them. Obtaining information on this was the job of low-level members of the Order, who would be stationed throughout the cities of the world. These [[Informants|spies]] would watch the local nobles and rulers, looking for signs of corruption, or for membership in the Templars. Once gathered, any information was passed on to the Assassins responsible for the actual execution.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />

The Assassins spent their entire lifetime training to kill.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> From an early age, they were taught to observe their surroundings and plan ahead. Combat skills were a must, and its training was continuous, with a focus on bladed weapons of all sorts. However, despite such a concentration on combat, the most important consideration in the Assassins' training was concealment. Stealth was the greatest weapon of the Assassin, and everything about their life (the clothes they wore, where they lived, and even how they walked) emphasized a devotion to it.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> It was essential for an Assassin to be able to reach their target unnoticed, and then slip back into the crowd after they had struck.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />.

Another significant focus of an Assassins' training was maneuverability. By the time an Assassin reached the [[Ranks|rank]] of [[Master Assassin]], he was also a master of an early form of [[Free-Running|parkour]], extensively utilized by the Assassins. Widely seen as alien by the general populace, this method of movement allowed the Assassins to reach areas not normally accessible to man. ===The Third Crusade===

In 1191, during the [[Third Crusade]], the [[Syria]]n branch of the Assassin Order was centered in the fortress of [[Masyaf]], deep within the kingdom of the [[wikipedia:Holy Land|Holy Land]]. Led by [[Al Mualim]], the Assassins battled with the [[Templars]] and their leader, [[Robert de Sable]], over ideologies and the means with which to accomplish them. It was during the Third Crusade that the Assassins learned of a Templar interest in an [[First Apple|ancient artifact]], hidden within the catacombs of [[Solomon's Temple]]. It was decided to liberate the treasure from them, and the mission was a success, although a costly one. With the death of [[Kadar A-Sayf|one Assassin]], the severe injury of [[Malik A-Sayf|another]], and the arrival of the Templar army at the gates of Masyaf, the Assassins were nearly overwhelmed by the [[Siege of Masyaf|following battle]]. However, by crushing most of the Templar army under a concealed onslaught of rolling logs, they were able to drive the Templars from the fortress and village below.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

Following the assault, the Assassin blamed for the loss of life that day – [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] – was severely reprimanded, and tasked with removing nine influential individuals, who plagued the Holy Land with their corrupt rule. As Altaïr made his way down the list made up of both [[Crusader]] and [[Saracen]] individuals, he was greatly unsettled by the realization that their goal to bring peace to the people of the Holy Land was just, as he that felt his victims were "misguided perhaps, but pure in motive." This was a view shared by Al Mualim, who agreed with their goals, but felt that their attitude of "the end justifies the means" undermined the good they sought to ensure. As his mission progressed, Altaïr sought to know what bound his victims together, and the discovery that they were all Templars only served to reinforce the Assassin's determination to bring an end to the Templar plot.

By the end of the year, the Assassins were victorious over their Templar enemies. [[Robert de Sable]], [[Grand Master of the Templar Order]], was dead, however the treachery of one of their own had also hit the Assassin Order hard. Al Mualim, [[Grand Master of the Assassin Order]], and a former member of a coalition of ''ten'' Templar leaders, was revealed to be a traitor, and was killed by the very man he had sent to eliminate his fellow Templar conspirators. With Al Mualim dead, Altaïr took over as Grand Master of the Order, leading the Assassins in their attempts to rebuild their strength after the costly conflict.

Eventually, it was decided that the [[Piece of Eden]] was too great a threat to keep in Masyaf, and the decision was made to store it on the island of [[Cyprus]], in the [[Templar Archive|Limassol archives]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines">''[[Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines]]''</ref> However, following the liberation of the island from its Templar rulers, the Piece was kept by Altaïr until he had at least completed his fabled [[Codex]].

The power of the Assassin's in the east was destroyed by the Mongols in 1256 when an assassination attempt on Hulagu Khan failed and the Mongols retaliated by attacking the Assassin's strongholds, destroying them.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

The Order continued to thrive, despite being forced to adopt an even more secretive and isolated existence.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> During the time period known as the [[Renaissance]], the Assassin Order had apparently "gone underground." The reason for this is explained inside the Codex pages, where Altaïr states that even though the Templar Order was served a crushing defeat in the Holy Land and Cyprus, they still survived in more inconspicuous ways. As such, Altaïr believed that the Assassins too had to change tactics so as to live on.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Having abandoned the fortress of Masyaf, the Assassins spread out across the [[wikipedia:Mediterranean|Mediterranean]], taking up residence in places like northern [[Italy]] and [[Spain]]. However, the Templars too had done as much, headquartering themselves in [[Rome]]. By 1321, the Assassin Order had successfully integrated itself into modern day life of northern Italy, widely unknown to the average folk. That same year, a young sailor by the name of [[Domenico Auditore|Domenico]], the son of an Assassin, was apprenticed to the poet and Assassin [[Dante Alighieri]], who had been tasked with transporting the Codex of Altaïr from [[Venice]] to Spain.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Crypt">''[[Auditore Family Crypt|Uplay Content - Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Family Crypt]]''</ref> Upon his death, however, the undertaking fell instead to Domenico. During the voyage, pirates under the employ of the Templars ambushed the ship looking for the Codex, consequently killing the wife of Domenico. Fortunately for the Assassins, Domenico managed to break apart the Codex and hide its pages from the pirates before he and his son were forced overboard.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Crypt" />

Eventually returning to Venice, Domenico found his father and his patron, [[Marco Polo]], an ally of the Assassins, dead. Thus, Domenico emptied the bank accounts of Messer Polo, and traveled to the city of [[Florence]] under the assumed name of [[House of Auditore|Auditore]]. He eventually constructed the [[Auditore Family Villa|Auditore Villa]] in the city of [[Monteriggioni]], which became the center of the Assassin Order in Italy.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Auditore Crypt" />

Despite the order "modernizing" since the 12<sup>th</sup> Century, they still retained many of the rituals and practices, albeit altered. The practice of removing one's ring finger had been stopped, although the seal of the Order was branded upon the finger instead; such was the induction of [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] in 1487. Although significantly fewer in number, the Assassins were supported by the [[courtesans]], [[thieves]] and [[Mercenary|condottieri]] of Florence and Venice; the guilds of which were each run by a member of the Order.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

During this time period, the Assassins entered another period of increased hostilities with the Templars, who were attempting to overthrow the ruling [[House of Medici]] in Florence, and the [[wikipedia:Doge|Doge]] of Venice. Having already killed the [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza|Duke]] of [[Milano|Milan]]<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref> in 1476, [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Grand Master of the Templar Order, brought the noble families of [[House of Pazzi|Pazzi]], [[House of Barbarigo|Barbarigo]] and [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] together<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage" /> to accomplish his goals. Entering into conflict with the Assassins, Borgia dealt a crippling blow to the Order in 1476, when he executed the experienced warrior [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni Auditore]] and his two sons, [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]] and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]], although a third son, Ezio, managed to escape. With the aid of Ezio, the Assassins were able to counter Borgia's plot over a [[Assassin's Creed II|twenty-three year campaign]], defeating him at every turn.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

In 1487, the Order of Assassins learned that the Templars had retrieved an important artifact from the island of Cyprus, and deemed its capture necessary. Following the artifact from [[L'Arsenale di Venezia]], Ezio managed to overpower and replace the Templar guard carrying the artifact. Under this guise, Ezio met with Borgia himself, and the two engaged in battle. Borgia fled upon the arrival of other Assassins, and the artifact fell once again into the hands of the Assassins. The Assassins of this age, however, were unaware of the nature of the artifact, although they did recognize it as one of the Pieces of Eden mentioned within Altaïr's Codex.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

By 1500, one year after [[Cesare Borgia]] [[Fall of Monteriggioni|besieged]] the city of [[Monteriggioni]], murdering [[Mario Auditore]] and once again claiming ''the Apple'' for the Templars, Ezio Auditore had moved to Rome, meeting up with Niccolò Machiavelli and laying the foundations of a new "brotherhood" of Assassins. Utilising the mercenaries, thieves and courtesans of [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]], [[La Volpe]] and [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia Auditore]] respectively, Ezio's brotherhood worked to [[Liberation of Roma|combat the influence and power]] of the Borgia family, and by extension the Papacy itself. Headquartered in an underground store-room owned by Fabio Orsini, on [[Tiber Island]] in the centre of Rome, the Assassins begun to spread their influence throughout the city,recruiting those who had been saved by Ezio Auditore. Many undertook a variety of missions across Europe, aiding their brothers in cities such as London, Lisbon, Moscow and Calicut.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

Over a period of three years, Ezio's brotherhood whittled away the Borgia family's power, and with the murder of Rodrigo Borgia at the hands of his own son, and the arrest of Cesare by the [[Papal Guard]] of [[Pius III]], the Templars' influence over the city of Rome was shattered.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

By the 21<sup>st</sup> Century, the world had changed vastly.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Whilst the Order of Assassins had kept to their policy of remote camps and isolation,<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> the Templars had begun to infiltrate society further; taking the form of many corporations such as [[NASA]]<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> and [[Abstergo]]. The Templars continued to search for and investigate the various Pieces of Eden they discovered throughout this period,<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> whilst the Assassins continued their war against them; notably being responsible for the destruction of at least one Templar-controlled base in [[wikipedia:Siberia|Siberia]] in 1908, known in public as the [[Tunguska explosion]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> However, by the year 2012, the Templars, under the guise of their front company [[Abstergo Industries]], had begun kidnapping Assassins or those related to them in an attempt to locate even more Pieces of Eden.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Notable captives included the mysterious [[Subject Sixteen]], and [[Desmond Miles]] – descendants of both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />

Using Desmond, Abstergo managed to obtain a map of the locations of the Pieces of Eden across the globe, and subsequently begun their attempts to claim them. Not long after, the Assassins were able to free Desmond<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> with the aid of [[Lucy Stillman]] (an Assassin who had been working undercover at Abstergo for at least seven years by 2012)<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> as well as obtain their own copy of the map.<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /> Following this, Desmond agreed to aid the Assassins in their quest to defeat Abstergo, mostly for revenge, but also for closure. Utilizing the [[Animus|Animus 2.0]], a copy of the machine used by Abstergo to explore his genetic memories previously,<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" /> Desmond followed the memories of Ezio Auditore, adopting his skills in combat and free-running, while the rest of the Order concentrated to locating the Pieces of Eden before their Templar counterparts. Despite this, however, the war with the Templars had taken a turn for the worse. With their numbers dwindling, the Order of Assassins was in danger of losing the war.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

As technology progressed, so did the weapons used against the Assassins. By the time of Desmond Miles, the Templars were using cell phone towers to track down the Assassins. Leonardo da Vinci was born illegitimately to Messer [[wikipedia:Piero da Vinci|Piero da Vinci]] – an Italian notary – and a peasant woman named Caterina in 1452 and was raised in [[Tuscany]]. By age 14, da Vinci was apprenticed to [[Andrea del Verrocchio|Verrocchio]], the owner of the alleged finest workshop in [[Florence]] where he collaborated with the great painter on his ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptism_of_Christ Baptism of Christ]''.

At age 20, Leonardo was titled a master by the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_of_St_Luke Guild of Saint Luke], and opened his first workshop in Florence where he continued to collaborate with his old master. During his time there, he also befriended the [[House of Auditore|Auditore]] family.

In 1476, Leonardo met [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] when the latter accompanied his [[Maria Auditore da Firenze|mother]] to pick up some paintings from Leonardo’s workshop. On the way back to the [[Palazzo Auditore]], Leonardo and Ezio conversed about his work, which sparked the lifelong friendship between the two young men.

After the execution of [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni]], [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio Auditore]], Leonardo met Ezio once again, greeting him with a brotherly embrace. He was then requested by Ezio to repair the [[Hidden Blade]] and was immediately fascinated by its sophisticated and advanced design, despite its old age. After what is apparently several hours of work (as Ezio is shown to have fallen asleep for some time), Leonardo finally finished the repairs to the Hidden Blade. Just before handing the weapon over to Ezio, Leonardo claimed that Ezio's ring finger had to be removed because "the blade is designed to ensure the commitment of whoever wields it." It is shown that he was simply joking however, as the blade had been modified so that the removal of the finger was no longer necessary. Immediately after this, a Florentine guard took Leonardo into the latter's yard for interrogation, throwing him to the ground and kicking him several times in order to extract Ezio's whereabouts. Ezio promptly sneaked up behind the guard and assassinated him with his new weapon, before hiding the body inside the workshop with others that Leonardo used for anatomical research.

Leonardo and Ezio didn't meet again until 1478, when Ezio visited him with another codex page attained from his uncle [[Mario Auditore]]. He deciphered the page and, while Ezio practiced the new [[Assassination Techniques|assassination techniques]] explained on the page, constructed a second Hidden Blade to be put at his friend's disposal. This was when Ezio inquired about [[Francesco de' Pazzi]], which prompted Leonardo to discreetly tell him that he needed to seek out [[La Volpe]] (“the fox”). After this, Leonardo appeared at several instances in which Ezio simply visited him to decipher codex pages.

After Ezio stopped the [[Pazzi conspiracy]], he received another codex page from [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] and again visited Leonardo in order to have it deciphered. He was astonished by the new blade design, as it has been developed to allow the wielder to inject [[Poison Blade|poison]] into their enemies.

Leonardo met Ezio again in the [[Apennine Mountains]] after the fall of the Pazzi Conspirators. He was faced with the problem of a broken [[wagon]] wheel and asked Ezio to lift the carriage, causing him to notice the contraption in the back. This was the first conversation in which Leonardo mentioned his [[Flying Machine]]. Amused by Leonardo’s idea, Ezio offered to drive, and they set off for [[Romagna]]. During the trip, the wagon was attacked by the soldiers of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], threatening their lives all the way through the Mountains. At the end of the trail, Leonardo took the reins and left Ezio to deal with the soldiers. They met back up at the docks in Romagna where they were scheduled to set sail for Venice, after Ezio went through an ordeal involving [[Caterina Sforza]].

Upon arrival in Venice, Leonardo and Ezio were given a tour of the city by a baggage handler named [[Alvise da Vilandino]] before being led to his new workshop. He and Ezio parted ways there with a brotherly embrace.

Ezio again consulted Leonardo for his expertise, but this time for something other than decryption. He inquired about Leonardo’s Flying Machine that he learned of on the way to Romagna in order to invade the [[Palazzo Ducale]] so that he can rescue [[Giovanni Mocenigo|Doge Mocenigo]] from the Templar [[Carlo Grimaldi]]. After one test flight, Leonardo deemed the machine useless and flew into a fit of rage, but was then inspired by a piece of burnt paper floating from the fire. He concluded that in order for Ezio to reach his destination, they had to light a dozen fires across the city which would cause the air to rise, therefore lifting the machine.

After being accused of the murder of the Doge, Ezio came to Leonardo asking for a [[Carnevale]] mask so that he wouldn't be noticed as the most wanted man in Venice. He also bore another codex page, much to Leonardo's interest, as he discovered it contains plans for a small [[Pistol|firearm]] that could be concealed on Ezio's wrist. After testing the pistol, Leonardo gave Ezio the mask he requested and pointed him in the direction of Sister [[Teodora]] and [[Antonio de Magianis]] so that he could plot to assassinate the new Doge: the Templar [[Marco Barbarigo]].

Leonardo and Ezio met again briefly outside the workshop, just after Ezio discovered the Templar ship was returning the next day. Leonardo pointed out several key facts that he discovered piecing together the markings on the backs of the codex pages such as the arrival of a 'prophet' on the day the [[Piece of Eden]] was brought to the floating city (Venice).

In 1488, Ezio, Mario, and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] visited Leonardo to see if he was able to make sense of the Apple which they had successfully obtained from Rodrigo Borgia. To their dismay, he couldn't learn any more about it than the Assassins and, following its accidental activation, it was decided that it should be taken to [[Forli]] to be kept out of Templar hands. Mario also asked Leonardo to come and visit him at the [[Auditore Family Villa]], which he did at least once, in 1499.

The exact cause of his death is unknown, but could presumably have been a blood infection, due to him suffering from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gout Gout].

Leonardo is renowned primarily as a painter. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams and his thoughts on the nature of painting, are an invaluable contribution to later generations of artists, only rivalled by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo.
Leonardo is revered for his technological ingenuity. He conceptualised a helicopter, a tank, concentrated solar power, a calculator, the double hull and outlined a rudimentary theory of plate tectonics. Relatively few of his designs were constructed or even feasible during his lifetime, but some of his smaller inventions, such as an automated bobbin winder and a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire, entered the world of manufacturing unheralded. As a scientist, he greatly advanced the state of knowledge in the fields of anatomy, civil engineering, optics and hydrodynamics.

==Characteristics and personality==
His portrayal in ''Assassin's Creed II'' depicts Leonardo da Vinci as a cheerful and optimistic man. Ezio is his best friend, and as such, he treats him like a brother and has taken great risks to protect him, even though he says later in the game that courage is not his strong suit.

Despite being an accomplished and respected artist, as well as deeply curious about the world's wonders, Leonardo da Vinci was also a chronic procrastinator. Most of his commissioned works took years longer than anticipated, and many were never even finished. It is possible that this was because he did not feel his work to be important enough to devote his life to, as when he meets Ezio, he complains that it lacks purpose and he wishes to do something which has more impact on the world, such as architecture. Regardless, when Leonardo is intrigued by something, he becomes insatiably curious and often impossible to communicate with, as demonstrated when Ezio first brings him [[Altaïr]]'s codex pages for decryption.

Lucrezia Borgia was born in Subiaco, a little town near [[Rome]], on 18 April 1480. Her mother was the Countess of Cattanei, Vanozza dei Cattenei, one of the numerous mistresses of Rodrigo Borgia.

At the young age of 13, she was engaged twice, but her father, Pope Alexander VI (better known as [[Rodrigo Borgia]]), called off the engagements and later forced her to marry Giovanni Sforza, the purpose being to establish an alliance with the powerful Milanese Ducal family.

But it was for a short time, due the Sforzas no longer being useful for Alexander VI. Soon after, he gave the order to Cesare and Lucrezia to send Giovanni away from Rome. Alexander VI made an offer to Giovanni’s uncle, the Cardinal Ascanio Sforza, to persuade him to agree for the divorce. Instead, Giovanni accused Lucrezia of having an incestuous relationship with her father and brothers, and supposedly the marriage was not consummated, so the Pope said that the marriage was not valid.

===Second marriage===
The second marriage was with the Alfonso de Aragon (Duke of Bisceglie). Before the marriage took place, Cesare was impressed by the Duke's good looks and nature, but this soon changed to jealousy and hatred. It was said that Cesare did not like Alfonso because Lucrezia was very happy with him and had, since her marriage to him, stopped giving Cesare as much attention, and that might be the reason why years later Cesare sent his servants to kill him.

===Third marriage===
Lucrezia's third marriage was with Alfonso d'Este (Duke of Ferrara). After the death of her second husband, Alexander VI wanted to arrange a third marriage. This time she gave a number of children and proved at last to be a respectable Renaissance duchess, rising effectively above her questionable past and surviving the fall of the Borgias after Alexander VI's death.

Lucrezia gave birth to seven or eight children. Giovanni Borgia, who seemed to be Cesare's child, Rodrigo Borgia de Aragon, Ercole II d'Este, Ippolito II d'Este, Alessandro d'Este, Leonora d'Este, Francesco d'Este. Isabella Maria d'Este was born sometime in 1519, but died later that same day. Sadly, complications of this birth caused the death of Lucrezia 10 days later.

Lucrezia Borgia is an ancestor of the actress [[wikipedia:Brooke Shields|Brooke Shields]] and also of most of the royal families of Europe.

It is rumored that the famous term "Femme Fatale" was created as a result of her actions.This is because it is rumored that Lucrezia was in possession of a hollow ring that she used frequently to poison other people's drinks.
