[[Ezio]] gathered the 3,000 florins and handed them over to [[Egidio Troche]] to pay off his debt. Ezio reached the place where Egidio met the [[Juan Borgia the Elder|Banker]]'s men, and tailed them to the [[Pantheon]]. As Egidio's money was taken into the Pantheon, Ezio climbed the rear of the building and entered through the oculus (Opening in the roof). Assassinating the [[Luigi Torcelli|guard]] that took the money and changing into his clothes and coming back outside of the Pantheon dressed as the guard, Ezio ordered the Banker's men not to kill Egidio and then prepared to follow the other guards to the Banker.

In 1488, Savonarola managed to obtain the [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple of Eden]], and recognizing its powers, he took it with him to [[Florence]]. There, he used the artifact to instigate the [[Bonfire of the Vanities]], hoping to cleanse the city of everything he regarded as evil, such as art and wealth.

Savonarola was born in the city of [[Ferrara]], where at a young age, he took a moral stance against the corrupt clergy present in [[Renaissance]] [[Italy]].

In 1475, Savonarola studied at Santo Spirito and became a Dominican friar, and in 1482, he was dispatched to Florence, considered "The city of his destiny" by his order. During the 1480s, he made little impression, and was often called a poor public speaker. Seven years later, in 1487, he departed from Florence to be back in Bologna.

===Battle of Forlì===
In 1488, Savonarola resided in [[Forlì]] for some time. There, he caught wind of the existence of the Apple of Eden after passing by the [[House of Orsi|Orsi brothers]], who were conversing with [[Caterina Sforza]]. After the King of France drove [[Piero de' Medici]] from Florence in 1494, Savonarola used the Apple he had stolen to take over Florence. After uniting the city under his banner, he started to destroy all Renaissance [[Art Merchants|art pieces]] and books, due to his desire to revert the city back to Medieval times.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

When [[Rodrigo Borgia|Pope Alexander VI]], the [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Grand Master]] of the [[Templars|Templar Order]], found out that Savonarola had the Apple of Eden in his possession, he sent several troops of his [[Papal Guard|Papal army]] to retrieve it, though with no success.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Meanwhile, Ezio Auditore returned to Florence in 1497 and started making plans to overthrow Savonarola, in order to retrieve the Apple of Eden.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Ezio concluded that Savonarola's rule was being forced upon the people by his nine lieutenants, who were suppressing the Florentines. With this in mind, Ezio assassinated all nine of Savonarola's lieutenants, who were all either lured into serving Savonarola, or were being controlled by the Apple. Once this had been been achieved, his fellow [[Assassins]], [[La Volpe]] and [[Paola]], began to encourage the people to fight for themselves. Eventually, Savonarola's grip over Florence was lost.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Soon after, an angry mob gathered in front of Savonarola's residence, the [[Palazzo Pitti]], to stand up against him. Savonarola tried to control the mob with the Apple of Eden, but Ezio threw a [[Throwing knives|knife]] at Savonarola's hand, which caused him to drop the Apple. With Savonarola powerless, the mob took him away, and a Templar [[Agile guards|guard]] fled with the Piece of Eden. Eight years later, Caterina had her husband killed by the [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] brothers after finding out that he was working for the [[Templars]] and for being a lousy husband.

Offering to keep the ancient artifact, the "[[Ezio's Apple|Apple of Eden]]", safe in Forlì, Caterina and the Assassins Ezio and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] found the city taken by the Orsi brothers, who were hired by the Templars. Re-taking the city, Ezio saved Caterina's children from the Orsi and killed the two brothers, though the Apple was eventually taken from him.

Caterina later traveled to the [[Italy|Italian]] Assassins' headquarters in [[Monteriggioni]], requesting for aid against [[Cesare Borgia]]'s army. Unexpectedly, Monteriggioni was besieged by Cesare the next day, causing the town to be destroyed and Caterina to be captured.

The next year, Caterina was transported to the [[Castel Sant'Angelo]] in [[Rome]] for imprisonment. However, her imprisonment did not even last a day, as Ezio Auditore infiltrated the Castel, primarily hoping to kill Cesare and [[Rodrigo Borgia]]. With the two Borgias away from the Castel, Ezio freed Caterina with a key taken from [[Lucrezia Borgia]], and a few weeks later Caterina returned to [[Florence]] to await the restoration of her lands.

Close to the departure of [[Leonardo da Vinci]] from Forlì, Caterina was in the town as well, and had become trapped on a small rock in the middle of a lake. Luckily for her, Ezio Auditore heard her screaming for help, and came to her aid with a [[gondola]] and delivered her safely back to land. For this assistance, Caterina thanked Ezio by telling the captain of the [[Venice|Venetian]] ship to grant Ezio passage to Venice.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

While sailing away from Forlì, Ezio stated that Caterina was his "next conquest", before being reprimanded by Leonardo, who explained Caterina's importance to Ezio and remarked that seducing her would not be such a good idea. In 1484, Caterina moved with her family to Forlì. In 1488, shortly after the murder of her husband, Caterina was contacted by her allies, the Assassin Order, who asked her if they could hide an "important artifact" inside the [[Rocca di Ravaldino]] in Forlì. Caterina agreed, and met with Niccolò Machiavelli and Ezio Auditore, who she previously had not known to be an Assassin, in the countryside of [[Romagna]].<ref name="AC2 Battle of Forlì">''Assassin's Creed II'' - ''[[Battle of Forlì (DLC)]]''</ref>

As they drew closer to the city, they were met by a large crowd of Forlì's citizens fleeing. Niccolò concluded that the two were working for Rodrigo Borgia, and were probably looking for the map that Girolamo had made of all the locations of the [[Codex]] pages.<ref name="AC2 Battle of Forlì" />

Caterina took her soldiers to fight and reclaim her city, while Ezio served in the battle as both a soldier and protector to Caterina. By the time the group had reached the [[Rocca di Ravaldino]], the Orsi brothers had taken two of Caterina's children hostage as a lure to steal the Apple of Eden, of which they had heard was in Ezio's possession.<ref name="AC2 Battle of Forlì"/>

When the brothers threatened to kill her children if she did not relinquish the Apple, Caterina lifted her skirt, showing her panties, and cried that she had the ''"instrument to make more."''<ref name="AC2 Battle of Forlì"/>

Caterina did not wish the brothers to think that they were victorious, but she was desperate to get her children back, and requested Ezio to retrieve them for her. Ezio left the city immediately, found the children, and managed to kill [[Ludovico Orsi]]. Meanwhile, the Templars attacked the citadel again and took the Apple, which Ezio had placed in Caterina's hands.<ref name="AC2 Battle of Forlì"/>

After Ezio returned with Caterina's children and found out about the attack, he left Forlì and followed [[Checco Orsi]] into the countryside, where he assassinated him and retrieved the Apple. Checco managed to stab Ezio right before dying, and Ezio lost consciousness because of his wound; though not before seeing the Apple being stolen from him by a [[Girolamo Savonarola|black robed monk with a missing finger]].<ref name="AC2 Battle of Forlì"/>

Caterina's soldiers found Ezio's unconscious body next to Checco's, and took him to the [[Palazzo Comunale (Forlì)|Palazzo Comunale]], where Caterina nursed him until he regained consciousness. In 1500, Caterina and some of her soldiers went to temporarily stay in Monteriggioni, in order to forge an alliance with the [[mercenaries]] working for the [[Villa Auditore|Villa]]. Though she spoke with Ezio about this, he said that they would discuss it later, after he told the others about what he had discovered during his [[Confrontation at the Vatican|travel to the Vatican]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

When Ezio was relaxing in his bathtub after the meeting, Caterina entered his room and took her dress off. The two kissed and spent the night together. In 1501, Caterina was brought to Rome in a carriage, and was seen being taken out of it just outside the Castel Sant'Angelo. Lucrezia Borgia "welcomed" her to Rome, and warned the nearby [[citizens]] that the same would happen to any of those who opposed Cesare. After a heated argument between the two, Caterina was taken away by the [[guards]], and held captive within the Castello.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Shortly after this, Ezio infiltrated the Castel Sant'Angelo in order to assassinate Rodrigo and Cesare Borgia. Unfortunately, Cesare left before Ezio could face him, and evidently, Rodrigo had not been at the Castello for some time. Nevertheless, Ezio eventually found Caterina locked up in a cell, and witnessed her being beaten by Lucrezia. Ezio then pursued Lucrezia, as she had taken the key to Caterina's cell.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

After killing a few guards, Ezio carried Lucrezia back to Caterina's prison, ignoring Lucrezia's protests. Caterina slipped her hand into Lucrezia's dress, taking the key and unlocking the door. Ezio and Caterina both forced Lucrezia into Caterina's old cell, with Caterina banging Lucrezia's head against the door to knock her unconscious.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

As she was unable to walk due to her injury, Ezio carried Caterina out of the Castello, making sure that the way was clear. Upon reaching the walls, the two rode on [[Horses|horseback]], and Ezio ordered her to go to [[Tiber Island]] while he stayed behind to distract the guards. [[La Volpe]] found Caterina and brought her safely to the [[Tiber Island headquarters|Assassin headquarters]], where she was tended to by a [[Doctors|doctor]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Caterina, knowing she was of little use to anyone without Forlì, decided to leave Rome in order to care for her children and await the restoration of her lands.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

She intended to leave unannounced on horseback, though Ezio caught her just before she left. She then encouraged Ezio to unite the Assassins as their leader, and take back Rome. Her last words before galloping out of Ezio's sight were ''"Vittoria agli Assassini!"'' (Victory to the Assassins!).<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Having returned to Florence, she made a petition to regain control of Forlì, though this was denied. She eventually died of pneumonia on 26 May 1509.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

Caterina Sforza was a strong and fierce woman, ready to take on any threat she encountered. She was capable of leading an army into battle, being bold, as well as a good strategist. Her aggressive attitude, especially her colorful vocabulary, gained her both the respect and the fear of the men she commanded.

However, Caterina was also a very maternal and caring person regarding her loved ones. During the Battle of Forlì, when the Orsi brothers took two of her children, Caterina became unable to do anything and let Ezio take care of the problems.

Caterina was also a rather shrewd person, being able to infatuate Ezio to further her own cause. Through these means, she hoped to acquire an allegiance and the help of Monteriggioni's mercenaries in her battle against the Papal army.
