After his alleged suicide, Clay continued to exist as an AI recreation of his personality within the Animus. As such, he was able to manipulate much of the Animus' programming from within to aid another Animus subject, Desmond Miles.

Biography
Early years
The son of Harold Kaczmarek and his wife, Clay was destined, in his father's eyes, to follow in the family footsteps and become an engineer. Despite this, from an early age Clay showed signs of desiring more for himself; at one point saying to his father that he wanted to become an astronaut. As he grew older, Clay's interests begun to differ greatly from his father's hopes, causing a rift between the two.

At some point prior to 2007, Clay succeeded in gaining entrance to a college on an engineering degree, though his father was disappointed that it wasn't at one of the top-tier institutions; Clay subsequently begun to secretly visit a psychiatrist to discuss his feelings. Around this time, Clay was approached by William Miles, a member of the Assassin Order and offered an induction, which he passed, without the knowledge of his father. The psychiatrist noticed a marked improvement in Clay's attitude, behaviour and outlook following this, though he was oblivious as to the reasons why.

From this point on, Clay maintained limited contact with his father - whose business was suffering due to the economic downturn of the early 2010s - occasionally sending checks to help support the family. His father's overreliance soon drove both Clay and his mother away, leaving Harold on his own.

Inflitrating Abstergo
In 2010, William Miles gave Clay the task of infiltrating the Templar front organization, Abstergo Industries, and accessing the personal computer of Alan Rikkin, the company's CEO, with the aim of uncovering details surrounding the secretive "Animus project". Succeeding in his efforts, Clay returned to the Assassins with a copy of an email revealing the amount of funding being invested in the project, as well as the identity of the project lead: Dr. Warren Vidic, and the location of his new facility in Italy. Spurred on by this success, the Assassins decided to plant Clay deeper into Abstergo, this time as a Subject of Dr. Vidic's program. He was informed that a member of his team was a mole already deep inside Abstergo, one who had been raised outside of the Order, and who had all ties with them cut: Lucy Stillman. Assured that when the time came, she would aid in his escape, Clay agreed to the plan.

On February 1, 2011, Clay Kaczmarek was, on schedule, captured by the Abstergo's Lineage Research and Acquisition and inducted into the Animus project as Subject 16. Held within the Abstergo laboratory by Dr. Warren Vidic, Clay was forced to relive the memories of his ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze for dangerously long periods at a time. Throughout this, Vidic kept the true purpose of their genetic explorations a secret, though Clay soon realised that their efforts were focused on locating the mythical Apple of Eden. When Clay enquired about this, Vidic threatingly responded that he could not reasonably expect to be released if he knew what they truly sought. This worried Clay. However, William later told him to focus on his task, and when the time came, Lucy would rescue him as they were a team.

Eventually, Clay discovered the true purpose of the Animus project and decided that it was time for him to escape. Unfortunately however, by this point, his over-exposure to the Animus had resulted in his suffering from the Bleeding effect, and he soon found himself unwillingly exploring the memories of his ancestors without the use of the Animus. During one of these experiences, Clay found himself conversing with a figure calling herself Juno, who offered a shocking revelation about the true allegiances of his supposed ally, Lucy Stillman, as well as his own destiny.

The Truth
Clay reacted angrily when he was informed, by the being calling herself Juno, that his death was nigh and that his purpose from then on was to deliver a message to his eventual successor, Desmond Miles. In order to convince him of the necessity, Juno revealed that the years of loneliness and abandonment visited upon Lucy Stillman by the Assassin Order, so that she might better infiltrate the Templars, had in actuality turned her against them; her mission being to aid the Assassins in the discovery of the Apple, before returning it to the Templars. This revelation shocked Clay, and brought him to the realisation of his place in future events.

Eventually, Lucy discovered that Clay knew the truth about her betrayal and she attempted to explain her actions, saying that William Miles and the rest of the Order cared little for the lives that they destroyed in pursuit of their goals, whereas the Templars' did. Knowing she could not sway him, Lucy stated that she would keep the promise she had made to protect Clay, hiding the evidence of his newfound knowledge from Vidic, but that she could no longer afford to let him escape. Faced with no other option, Clay realised that there was only one way to get his message to Desmond Miles.

Life after death
For weeks, Clay planned his suicide down to the most minute detail, biding his time and preparing his message, all the meanwhile enduring the repeated attempts by Vidic to uncover the location of the Apple of Eden. Eventually, Clay managed to create an artificially intelligent construct of himself inside the Animus, splitting it into twenty-four pieces to be united by his successor, as well as sending one final email to his father. The next day, Clay killed himself by slitting his wrists and draining his body of blood, in order to paint several cryptic messages in the rooms where he was being kept, hoping to ensure his successor recovered the message that he had died to pass on. After his death, Abstergo dumped his body in the Tiber River in Rome.

Not long after Clay's death, Desmond Miles was abducted by Abstergo and forced into the Animus project. In time, he and Lucy escaped from Abstergo, finding their way to an Assassin Hideout nearby, wherein he would begin his own explorations of Ezio Auditore's memories; during these investigations, the Assassins learned that Clay had managed to hack the Abstergo Animus before his death, and had placed twenty Glyphs throughout the Animus system, which were subsequently rendered in the visual memories. These encrypted files, which had been saved onto the Abstergo Animus' memory core that Lucy had stolen, were later unknowingly transferred to Rebecca Crane's Animus 2.0.

After decrypting all twenty files, the Assassins were rewarded with a genetic memory marked "date classified BCE." The video showed two free-runners, primordial Adam and Eve, climbing a large glass structure with an Apple of Eden in hand.

Following their rout from the hideout, Desmond, Lucy, Rebecca and Shaun retreated to the last Assassin safehouse in Italy, the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni. Whilst there, during their exploration of some of Ezio's later memories, it was later discovered that Clay had left ten more glyphs, which corresponded with locations in Renaissance Rome. Upon visiting these indicated landmarks, Desmond discovered several Rifts in the Animus programming.

Within each, Desmond solved a Cluster puzzle, which then unlocked a piece of a file. Upon compiling them, they revealed a distorted video with the message "The miracle is in the execution," suggesting that, unlike the video hidden in the Glyphs, the Rifts instead concealed an executable file.

Upon accessing it, Desmond found himself in an unknown area within the Animus, and was able to run through a long virtual maze, similar to those within the Animus Virtual Training Program.

At the end of the maze, he found a hologram of Clay, partially broken and made of computing code, who told Desmond that all hope was lost, and that he needed to go to Eden to find a woman named Eve. Before vanishing, Clay told Desmond to find him in the darkness.

Black Room
Eventually, Desmond and his allies located Ezio Auditore's Apple of Eden, hidden in the Colosseum Vault. It was here that Desmond met Juno for the first time, and was forced to unwillingly kill Lucy, despite the betrayal not yet having become apparent to her companions. As a result of this, Desmond slipped into a coma and was returned to the Animus to support his mental state.

When he awoke, Desmond was greeted by the digital construct Clay Kaczmarek had inserted into the Animus. Clay informed him that they were in the Black Room, a safe mode of the Animus' software, and offered his successor advice on how to escape; telling Desmond that he needed to create a Sync Nexus and clearly separate his memories from those of Ezio and Altaïr.

Since Desmond's teammates could not contact him, Clay took the place of Shaun Hastings as the writer of database articles. He made an entry about himself revealing his actual name to Desmond, and told him how they were distant cousins.

On the Animus Island Clay also mentioned that the Animus would resist his attempts to view further genetic memories and keep pulling Desmond back into the simulated island they were in - the designated compartment for Desmond's consciousness. However, Clay said that he would help prevent the Animus from noticing him "wandering" into the outside partitions of memory, just in case it concluded Desmond to be a virus and enacted a deletion.

At one point, as Desmond worked to return to his body, Clay asked him if he could come with him, perhaps until he could have a body of his own. As Desmond hesitantly declined, Clay admitted that he was not surprised, and that perhaps he had wasted his only chance.

On another re-entrance to the island, Clay asked Desmond if he had ever regretted anything in his life. After Desmond admitted that he had wished he had been more patient with his parents, whom he had run away from, and that he wished things would have turned out different with Lucy, Clay simply thanked Desmond for making sense before vanishing.

While Desmond had come close to completing the Synch Nexus, the Animus began to attempt to rectify the intrusions he had been causing in other memories. As it began to delete the Black Room and all of its contents, Clay grabbed onto Desmond and threw him out of the room, saving Desmond's life.

Legacy
Following Clay's physical death, the Templars were left without the location of the Vault; though they had gained the knowledge that another Assassin, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, had once seen a map projected by another Piece of Eden that could help them find it. Searching for a descendant of both Altaïr and Ezio Auditore, Abstergo happened upon Desmond Miles. They kidnapped him, and forced him into the Animus project, labelling him Subject 17.

By accessing private e-mails between Animus sessions, Desmond discovered an email Lucy had written to Dr. Vidic, which detailed the Bleeding effect, and explained how it was connected to Clay. She expressed her concern in pushing the him too hard; however, the email was never replied to, and was evidently deleted shortly after it was received.

Also, through the files unlocked in the glyphs Clay had created within the Animus, Desmond was able to learn many things about the Templar Order, both in the past and in his own time.

Ancestry
Clay Kaczmarek had a rich and varied ancestry, which quickly caught the attention of Abstergo Industries. Whilst his immediate ancestors lived relatively normal lives, with many on his father's side of the family taking jobs in engineering, Clay was most notably a direct descendant of Adam, one of the first humans, alongside Eve, who rose in rebellion against the First Civilization. As Adam was a child of both a human and a member of the First Civilization, Clay had a notable concentration of First Civilization genes in his blood.

Clay also had ancestors in ancient Africa, in the Roman Empire forum and in the Far East. Of particular interest to Abstergo was his relation to the Italian House of Auditore, founded by Domenico Auditore in the early 14th century. His Auditore bloodline ended with Ezio Auditore da Firenze, as Clay's next ancestor was an illegitimate child. One of his ancestors was also connected with an unknown Queen Isabella, whilst another participated in the Battle of Gettysburg during the United States American Civil War.

Personality and characteristics
Through his artificial construct, Clay was shown to be a sarcastic and witty man, usually speaking of his dire situation with cynical humor. Throughout his troubles with the Bleeding effect he proved driven to complete his mission, even as his sanity began to crumble; first to relay back Abstergo's plans for the Apple of Eden, then to pass on Juno's message. Later on, as his perception of reality and identity began to falter and switch between past lives, he began speaking in riddles and cryptic clues. However, he kept his motivations to the end, even sacrificing his own life to reveal the Truth.

Despite his own situation of being trapped in the Animus, as well as his occasional lapses of depression from his lost chances, Clay willingly helped Desmond regain his body and repair his subconscious; despite not being able to do so himself.

Trivia
* In the Assassin's Creed French comic, Clay is referred to as "Michael." However, the graphic novel is not considered canon in this respect, as it directly contradicts the events of the games.
* The achievement in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood entitled ".. .- -- .- .-.. .. ...- ." (Morse code for "I AM ALIVE") is earned by solving all Cluster puzzles. The achievement badge consists of the Morse code ".---- -....", which means "16".
* Clay took the place of Shaun Hastings as the writer of Database articles in Assassin's Creed: Revelations.
* Clay's surname Kaczmarek is of Polish origin, hinting that he may be of Polish ancestry.
* According to a newspaper present at Clay's memorial service, it appears his body was dumped in the Tiber River after his death.
Pietro Rossi (1470 - unknown) was a stage performer, and one of Lucrezia Borgia's lovers.

Biography
As of 1500, Pietro was engaged in a relationship with Lucrezia Borgia, the daughter of Pope Alexander VI. However, due to Lucrezia's brother Cesare Borgia being known for his jealous rages - one of which caused him to have Lucrezia's last husband killed - they kept their relationship a secret. In order to allow him to visit her easily and unnoticed, Lucrezia gave Pietro a key to the side door of the heavily-guarded Castel Sant'Angelo.

On one of Pietro's visits, however, Lucrezia instructed a guard to spy on the two of them as Pietro kissed her and openly confessed his love for her. After Pietro left, Lucrezia then told the guard to inform her brother of their relationship, wishing to purposefully make Cesare jealous.

In 1503, Cesare sent his personal assassin Micheletto Corella to kill Pietro while he rehearsed his role as Jesus Christ in the Passion play, which was to be held in the Colosseo. Unbeknownst to him, Micheletto had infiltrated the cast, and planned to stab him to death in an "accident," under the guise of his role as the Centurion who had been asked to check if Jesus was dead.

During the Crucifixion act, however, the rehearsal was interrupted by the Assassin Ezio Auditore, who had intended to kill Micheletto before he could harm Pietro. Despite this, Micheletto had planned ahead, and had poisoned the wine that Pietro had drank earlier on in the act.

Foregoing his planned assassination, much to Micheletto's surprise, Ezio instead rushed Pietro away from the fight to the nearest doctor.

After Pietro appeared to be recovering from the cantarella poison, Ezio demanded that he give him the key to the Castel Sant'Angelo. As Pietro protested that he was only a poor actor, Ezio revealed that Cesare knew of his and Lucrezia's affair, to which the other finally handed over the key.

Leonardo Da Vinci later told Ezio that Pietro had fled Italy to escape the Borgia.

Trivia
*In the novelization of Brotherhood, Pietro is called Pietro Benintendi.
* The way Ezio is holding Pietro as he picks him up is an almost exact reenactment of Michelangelo's Pietà.
* If you view Pietro in Eagle Vision, the fake crown of thorns he's wearing turns gold.
Clay Kaczmarek (1982 - 2012), also known as Subject 16 of the Animus Project, was an individual who had been kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and forced to relive his ancestors' memories in the Animus.

After his alleged suicide, Clay continued to exist as an AI recreation of his personality within the Animus. As such, he was able to manipulate much of the Animus' programming from within to aid another Animus subject, Desmond Miles.

Biography
Clay was captured by the Templar-owned organization Abstergo Industries for use in the genetic memory program. Held within the Abstergo laboratory by Dr. Warren Vidic, Clay was kept connected to the Animus for dangerously long periods, sometimes even days at a time. This led to him severely suffering from a condition known as the "Bleeding effect."

Through this Bleeding effect, Clay began to explore the memories of his ancestors without the use of the Animus; but his inability to control these visions forced him into a downward spiral of insanity, eventually culminating in his evident suicide.

Before this event, Clay was forced to explore the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore, who the Templars knew had located the Vault during his lifetime. However, he was never able to relive the desired memory. Clay made an artificially intelligent construct of himself inside the Animus, splitting it into twenty-four pieces to be united by his successor. The next day, Clay killed himself by draining his body of blood, in order to paint several cryptic messages in the rooms where he was being kept, hoping to prevent the Templars from reaching their goals.

The Truth
Following the escape of Desmond Miles from Abstergo and the beginning of his journey through the memories of Ezio, the Assassins learned that Clay had managed to hack the Abstergo Animus before his death, and had placed twenty Glyphs throughout the Animus system, which were subsequently rendered in the visual memories.

The Miracle
It was later discovered that Clay had left ten more glyphs, which corresponded with locations in Renaissance Rome.

This proved to be the first indication of Clay's AI presence in the Animus. Though physically dead, his "essence" had been absorbed into the system, allowing him to interact with the users, and act as a third person spectator; effectively letting him see everything that went on inside the Animus.

Black Room
Soon after he had fallen into a coma and was returned to the Animus to support his mental state, Desmond woke to meet Clay in the Black Room, a safe mode of the Animus' software. Here, Clay explained where they were, and offered advice on how to escape; telling Desmond that he needed to create a Sync Nexus and clearly separate his memories from Ezio's and Altaïr's.

Clay also mentioned that the Animus would resist his attempts to view further genetic memories and keep pulling Desmond back into the simulated island they were in - the designated compartment for Desmond's consciousness. However, Clay said that he would help prevent the Animus from noticing him "wandering" into the outside partitions of memory, just in case it concluded Desmond to be a virus.

As it began to delete the Black Room and all of its contents, Clay grabbed onto Desmond and threw him out of the room, saving Desmond's life at the presumed cost of his own.

Legacy
Following Clay's death, the Templars were left without the location of the Vault; though they had gained the knowledge that another Assassin, Altaïr, had once held a certain Piece of Eden that could help them find it. Thus, Abstergo kidnapped a descendant of Altaïr, Desmond Miles, who they labelled Subject 17.

By accessing private e-mails between Animus sessions, Desmond discovered an email Lucy had written to Dr. Vidic, which detailed the Bleeding effect, and explained how it was connected to Clay. She expressed her concern in pushing the Animus subjects too hard; however, the email was never replied to, and was evidently deleted shortly after it was received.

Also, through the files unlocked in the glyphs Clay had created within the Animus, Desmond was able to learn many things about the Templar Order, both in the past and in his own time.

Ancestry
Clay Kaczmarek had a rich and varying ancestry, which quickly caught the attention of Abstergo Industries. Kaczmarek was most notably a direct descendant of Adam, who was the first human alongside Eve who rose in rebellion against the First Civilization. As Adam was a child of both a human and a member of the First Civilization, Clay had a notable concentration of First Civilization genes in his blood.

Clay also had ancestors in ancient Africa, in the Roman forum and in the Far East. His ancestry also reached out to the House of Auditore, founded by Domenico Auditore in the early 14th century. His Auditore bloodline ended with Ezio Auditore da Firenze, as Clay's next ancestor was an illegitimate child. One of his ancestors was also connected with an unknown Queen Isabella, and his most recent known ancestor took part in the Battle of Gettysburg in the United States.

Personality and characteristics
Clay was shown to be a sarcastic and witty man, usually speaking of his dire situation with cynical humor. In the initial stages of the Bleeding effect, he proved to be driven, even as his sanity began to crumble. Later on, his perception of reality and identity began to falter and switch between past lives, and he began speaking in riddles and cryptic clues.

Trivia
*In the Assassin's Creed French comic, Clay is referred to as "Michael." However, the graphic novel is not considered canon in this respect, as it directly contradicts the events of the games.
Ahmad Sofian was a member of the Assassin Order and the father of Abbas Sofian. During the Siege of Masyaf in 1176, he was tasked with infiltrating the Saracen encampment. He was captured and forced to give up the name of the Assassin - Umar Ibn-La'Ahad - who had infiltrated Salah Al'din's personal tent, and killed a nobleman in his escape. Ahmad was nearly put to death until Umar stood up to take his place. After he was brought back into the fortress, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad blamed him for his father's death.

Some time later, in remorse over Umar's death, Ahmad entered to the home of Umar's eleven-year-old son, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, and committed suicide after begging forgivness for his betrayel. When told of his father's fate, Abbas refused to beleive this, and thought that Ahmad had left the Order but would one day return.
Clay Kaczmarek (1982 - 2012), also known as Subject 16 of the Animus Project, was an individual who had been kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and forced to relive his ancestors' memories in the Animus. As a descendant of Adam, as well as Ezio Auditore da Firenze, he was born into the Assassin bloodline.

After his alleged suicide, Clay continued to exist as an AI recreation of his personality within the Animus. As such, he was able to manipulate much of the Animus' programming from within to aid another Animus subject, Desmond Miles.

While at Abstergo, Clay relived the lives of his ancestors in the Far East and ancient Africa, as well as one at the Battle of Gettysburg, one in the Roman forum, and one who was connected with Queen Isabella.

The Miracle
It was later discovered that Clay had left ten more glyphs, which corresponded with locations in Renaissance Rome.

Personality
Clay was shown to be a sarcastic and witty man, usually speaking of his dire situation with cynical humor. In the initial stages of the Bleeding effect, he proved to be driven, even as his sanity began to crumble. Later on, his perception of reality and identity began to falter and switch between past lives, and he began speaking in riddles and cryptic clues.

Final Words
Clay: "Here it comes!"

Clay: "What is a man but the sum of his memories? We are the stories we live! The tales we tell ourselves!"

Clay: "Im saving you idiot! GO!"

Clay shoves Desmond towards the memory portal.

Clay: "GO!"

Vieri de' Pazzi (1459 - April 1478) was Francesco de' Pazzi's son and one of the youngest Pazzi conspirators. Highly competitive, he developed a particularly vicious rivalry with Ezio Auditore during their teenage years. This rivalry eventually escalated into a failed attempt to kill Ezio as he fled to Monteriggioni in 1476 after the Templars had his father and brothers executed. Vieri was killed in San Gimignano by Ezio and a force of mercenaries under the command of Ezio's uncle, Mario.

Biography
Early life
Vieri was born somewhere in Tuscany, Italy - presumably in Florence - as the son of Francesco de' Pazzi. He was extremely spoiled by his father, and was said to be able to "burn right through his father's money."

He favored holding contests rigged in his favor, and bought exotic weapons, armor, clothes and steeds. He grew to be a bully and a dangerous thug, trained to be a Templar killer since the age of fifteen.

One day in 1476, Vieri harassed Cristina Vespucci in front of her home, and told her that he was tired of waiting for her to "open her legs" to him on her own. When Cristina refused to become intimate with Vieri, the latter attempted to sexually assault her, but was instead beaten up by Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

As a Templar
Some time prior to 1476, Vieri joined the Templar Order, an organization which at least two of his family - his father and his great uncle, Jacopo - were a part of.

In December of 1476, Vieri and Ezio, who had become bitter rivals, met on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, where they and their gangs had a street fight. Despite initiating the brawl by throwing a rock at Ezio's face, Vieri did not participate in the actual fighting. He simply watched from a distance and called a retreat as Ezio and his loyalists gained the upper hand.

On December 31, 1476, Vieri and Ezio met again when the latter was escaping Florence with his mother and sister after having assassinated Uberto Alberti. Vieri tried to kill the three by sending his armed thugs to attack them; however, they were rescued by Ezio's uncle, Mario Auditore and his mercenaries. Vieri then fled to San Gimignano when Mario confronted him.

According to one of Mario's mercenaries, Vieri and his men attacked Monteriggioni - Mario's city - repeatedly over the next year and a half, most likely due to Ezio's presence and his Templar loyalties.

Death
In April of 1478, Vieri met with his father, his great uncle and Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia (the Grand Master of the Templar Order) in San Gimignano to discuss plans for the Pazzi Conspiracy.

As soon as the four of them went their separate ways, one of Vieri's guards reported that Mario and his mercenaries had invaded the city, intent on killing him to end the harassment they faced in Monteriggioni. Soon after, Mario's battalion arrived at the scene and attacked Vieri's men.

Vieri fled to the city's battlements and commanded his troops from there. However, he was soon confronted by Ezio, who had accompanied Mario, and after a brief, furious fight with Vieri and his guards at the top of a tower, Ezio triumphed over him. He demanded to know what he and the Templars were planning, but Vieri refused to say anything and died. Enraged, Ezio cursed at Vieri's body, insulting him and his family, until Mario calmed him down. He told Ezio not to become like Vieri, and said that the Assassins showed respect to those they had killed before giving Vieri his last rites.

Vieri was a cruel young man who liked nothing more than to win, in any variety of contests. He would call for competitions against other noble families, which were always rigged for his victory. In the rare occasions when he did lose, he would invite the winner and his family to a victory dinner and subsequently poison them by serving them "a meal to die for."

He would do anything to get what he wanted, such as rape, hire thugs to fight for him, and outright kill people who stood in his way. He was also a coward, and would run away when his plans failed.

However, as revealed in the letter from Fra Giocondo to Vieri's father, Vieri acted in this way only because he sought attention and approval from his father, wishing for him to recognize his abilities and devotion to the Templars. Giocondo also observed that Vieri merely wanted to be loved, mentioning that the boy spoke often and fondly of his father, as well as of a desire to be closer to him.

Final words
*Ezio: What are you and your allies planning? Is this what my father discovered? Is this why he was killed?
*Vieri: I'm sorry, were you hoping for a confession?
(outside the Memory Corridor)
*Ezio: Pezzo di merda! Vorrei solo che avessi sofferto di piu! Hai avuto la fine che meritavi! Spero che bru- (Piece of shit! I only wish you'd suffered more! You met the fate you deserved! I hope yo-)
*Mario: Enough, Ezio! Show some respect.
*Ezio: Respect? After all that's happened? Do you think he would have shown either of us such kindness?
*Mario: You are not Vieri. Do not become him. (to Vieri's corpse) Che la morte ti dia la pace che cercavi. (May death provide the peace you sought.) Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)

Trivia
*Strangely, Vieri's birth year is listed to be 1454, whereas his father's is 1444. There is likely an error in the database with either one or both of their ages, considering the impossibility of having a son at age 10.
*Vieri mostly speaks in an Italian accent, but sometimes, such as when he ambushes Ezio and his family on their way to Monteriggioni, he says "My condolences for the loss of your father and brothers!" in a more American accent.
*In Assassin's Creed II, if the player beats Vieri in hand-to-hand combat after luring him down from his tower (by stealing his weapon), Ezio will reappear at the top of the tower after entering the Memory Corridor.
*On the painting of Vieri in the attic of the Villa Auditore, it says he died in 1477; while according to the game's timeline, he was killed in 1478.
*Vieri makes a brief appearance in the first Cristina Memory of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, where he tries to assault Cristina, before being beaten by Ezio.
**If this fight lasts long enough, the player can read a database entry for Vieri. Unlike his entry in Assassin's Creed II, his entry in Brotherhood contains a very brief summary of his attitude and role, and how he died.
*Vieri is responsible for the scar on Ezio's lip, by throwing a rock at him during their confrontation on the Ponte Vecchio.
*In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Vieri is mentioned by Ezio while disguised as an italian minstrel. Ezio is singing about what he done during the past games.
Shaun Hastings was a member of the Assassin Order, who gave tactical assistance to Assassin teams across the globe, sometimes by relaying messages from higher command. His support was often targeted towards Assassins who were out in the field.

Within his team, Shaun acted as both historian and analyst, assisting Desmond Miles during his time in the Animus 2.0. This help mostly came in the form of creating Database entries on the various people, places, and events he encountered.

Biography
Early life
Originating from England, Shaun was interested in conspiracy theories and the unexplained from a very early age. Though initially unaware of the existence of the modern-day Templars and Assassins, when he was around 15, he did some investigations into a company known as Abstergo Industries, and realized that they were "up to no good".

This eventually inspired him to prevent their wrongful activities in any way he could. While working as a junior professor, Shaun took the pseudonym "Guy Fawkes" (after one of the co-conspirators of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot) and began spreading the word.

He published articles detailing Abstergo's inner workings to WikiLeaks and other news groups, searching for people with "stories to tell;" all the while remaining unaware that the Templars would try to silence him.

Rebecca Crane was first to realize the danger he posed to himself, and tried to warn him that he was "messing with the wrong people." However, Shaun did not believe her, and eventually, he was found out by Abstergo employee Alan Rikkin.

Shortly after this, on December 10, 2010, Shaun was kidnapped by Abstergo. Fortunately, he was able to make an escape from the van that was taking him to the company, with Abstergo only discovering afterwards that the van's computer had been hacked, creating a false alert for a need to stop and refuel.

Shaun was then contacted again by Rebecca, who "rescued" him, and recruited him into the Assassin Order.

Hiding out
After Lucy Stillman and Desmond Miles had escaped Abstergo and reached the hideout, Shaun was first to greet Desmond, and introduce both himself and Rebecca. However, he promptly then insisted that they all get straight to work.

Desmond then entered the Animus to relive the memories of one of his ancestors, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. While Desmond was inside the Animus, Shaun supplied him with information in the form of Database entries, as well as the occasional piece of advice on glyph puzzles.

As the historian and analyst of the Assassin Order, Shaun was constantly working on his computer, and rarely had the opportunity to speak with Desmond – often telling him bluntly to "go away" if ever he tried to talk to him.

During the assault on the hideout by Warren Vidic and several Abstergo guards, Shaun helped Rebecca pack up their equipment, and later, drove the van to their next hideout at Monteriggioni.

Escape to the Sanctuary
Upon setting up camp in the Sanctuary, Shaun helped by hiding the van, and teaching Desmond how to reroute power into the underground chamber.

Once they had set up, Shaun continued his research, operating similarly to the way he had in the previous hideout. In contrast, he was much more respectful and tolerant towards Desmond – though he was still rude and impatient with Rebecca, which caused Lucy to give him a greater workload than the other Assassins.

During Desmond's breaks outside the Animus, Shaun told him further history of the events he was experiencing, mentioning things such as the fate of Caterina Sforza, and Cesare Borgia's explicit letter to the Pope about his wedding night.

Journey to the Colosseum
After Desmond located the Apple of Eden through Ezio Auditore's memories, the modern-day Assassins were still left with the mystery of how to get to the Apple's vault. Though Rebecca knew it was accessed with a spoken password, the group was unsure of what it could possibly be.

Desmond pointed out the numbers they had found written on the wall, as well as the triple triad symbol, upon which Shaun correctly deduced that they are relevant to God, and His 72 names. This number, he also stated, was the same year that Rome's Colosseum was built. They all concluded that that was where the Apple would be found, and began their long road trip.

On finding the Apple, Desmond used it to ask where the Temples were located, which resulted in it projecting a series of symbols and images. Shaun, upon identifying the Phrygian Cap and the Eye of Providence, said that both objects come together in only one place.

However, before Shaun could finish his explanation, Juno possessed Desmond through the Apple, causing a temporal freeze in those around him, and forcing Desmond to stab Lucy in the abdomen.

At the point where Lucy and Desmond collapsed, Shaun and Rebecca were still visibly conscious, and appeared unaffected by the Apple's power.

After Desmond's Collapse
Following Lucy's death, Desmond fell unconscious, and eventually slipped into a coma. Rebecca and William Miles brought Desmond to New York City in an effort to reawaken him, with Shaun staying behind to attend Lucy's funeral in a cemetery just outside of Rome.

Following a phone call with Rebecca and William, during which Shaun expressed his suspicion that Desmond may be a sleeper cell similar to another former Assassin, Shaun took a plane to join them in New York.

Eventually, the four of them boarded a plane back to the East, taking the Apple recovered from the Colosseum Vault with them. As they arrived, Desmond awoke from his comatose state, and stated that he knew what they needed to do.

Characteristics and personality
Shaun was often cynical, condescending, sarcastic, and pessimistic. However, he did have a playful side, often inserting humorous tidbits into the Database entries he crafted. As a prank, he also once e-mailed Rebecca that he had found a riddle that held a clue to the location of a Piece of Eden, but eventually revealed that the riddle was just a joke.

When he first met him, Shaun would often have little patience with talking to Desmond, though at other times, he would converse with him at length. He also often insulted Rebecca, commenting on her immaturity by saying "the grown-ups are talking" – neglectful of the fact she had saved his life multiple times.

Shaun was desperate to enter the Animus, and even resorted to begging Lucy through her e-mail, which she silently declined by not replying. However, when confronted about it, he said that "the job behind the desk" was much better.

When talking about his status as an Assassin, Shaun stated that "I've killed before, I expect to kill again. It's just that I’d prefer not to." He portrayed the rather sarcastic role of an individual who does all the work and never gets noticed or rewarded, as he had complained more than once that no one missed him when he was gone.

His cynical attitude was also evident in many instances, such as when he pointed out that the Assassins were still killers, whatever their motives; making them no more the "good guys", than the Templars.

Shaun was also skeptical of most institutions, such as the church and government. He noted in one description of Venice that the city's past "followed the historical norm: The people got screwed." Despite some of Subject 16's puzzles implying that the Assassins had actively resisted Abstergo's use of capitalism as a mechanism of control, Shaun's dialogue once contradicted this, as he used the word "communists" as a jibe directed towards Lucy and Rebecca.

Despite his attitude towards Rebecca, Shaun still held her in higher regard than he cared to admit, most probably because of the numerous occasions on which she had saved his life. Only Lucy seemed to tolerate his snide remarks, even seeming to trust him to a great extent, as he was the only one to whom she revealed her feelings for Desmond.

Shaun's interest in history was shown clearly through his extensive database entries, and in an email from William, who claimed that Shaun would enjoy the area in which the Assassin leadership was based as it had "lots of history."

Shaun was quite confident in his own abilities, once calling himself a "master at decryption." He also thought himself to have a gift for "seeing things and making connections," an ability he compared to Desmond's Eagle Vision, only more "useful" in his opinion. He was likely only referring to his high intellect though, rather than some kind of super-human power.

Romantic life
At one point when Desmond asked Shaun about his love life, Shaun proudly told of his exploits with a girl named Kate, who he allegedly "charmed the pants right off" of.

However, Rebecca scoffed at this and pointed out that she knew for a fact that Kate and Shaun had not even made it to second base. At Shaun's embarrassed demands for an explanation, Rebecca nonchalantly said that she and Kate had had lunch afterwards.

Trivia
* The character Shaun Hastings is named after Sean Hastings, a cult hero in the computer industry.
* Danny Wallace, the voice and model of Shaun, was contacted by Ubisoft when he attended the BAFTA video game awards with a friend. He was e-mailed and asked if he would like to be a character in an unknown video game, which he accepted. The game turned out to be Assassin's Creed II.
* During the corrupted sequences in Assassin's Creed II, Shaun states that he forgot that Rodrigo Borgia eventually became Pope, even though there is a portrait of him in his Papal attire on the wall next to his computer.
* In Assassins Creed II, if spoken to enough times, Shaun will eventually say to Lucy that he thinks Desmond is stalking him.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Shaun has a portrait of Cesare Borgia near his desk, as well as pictures of famous landmarks in Rome, such as the Pantheon, and some of Leonardo da Vinci's designs, such as the crossbow.
* Shaun's password for his e-mail account is GuyFawkes23.
* It is hinted that Shaun was an altar boy at some stage in his childhood, due to his mention of his priest once saying "You know too much for your own good."
Assassin's Creed: Embers is an animated short film project designed to expand the Assassin's Creed series. Revealed by Ubisoft on 6 June 2011, the film was released on 15 November 2011, alongside several special editions of Assassin's Creed: Revelations. The short film is available in 15 languages, either through voice dub or subtitles.

This short film was created and produced by Ubiworkshop, and was completely developed internally at Ubisoft Montreal. To create the film, Ubiworkshop worked with two other teams: Ubik, and a team from the Technology Group.

Set after Revelations, the film concludes the life of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who retired from his life as an Assassin and lived with his wife Sofia Sartor in Tuscany's countryside.

Plot
In the year 1524, the former Assassin Ezio Auditore has retired to a villa in the countryside of Tuscany, with his wife Sofia and children Marcello and Flavia. While Ezio is writing in his study, Sofia asks him to watch Flavia while she and Marcello visit his sister Claudia. Shortly after, he leaves his study to tend the vines as Flavia plays nearby the villa. In the midst of his harvest, he sees a stranger cloaked in black, talking to Flavia. Fearing the worst, Ezio hurriedly intercepts the stranger, though Flavia tells him that she was no danger, as Ezio sees her necklace with the Assassin insignia.

Later, the Assassin introduces herself as Shao Jun, and then asks for Ezio's help in saving her people and order. Ezio refuses, stating that his time with the order is over, and asks that Jun leave, despite her pleas. Sofia however, bids that Jun should stay, seeing that she's come a long way. Jun stays, while the family prepares to rest for the night. Ezio ponders about the time he has left while watching their children with Sofia. The two would then go to bed.

The next morning, Ezio inspects his villa to look for Shao Jun, and finds her in his study. Furiously, Ezio tells her to leave his study, and shortly after, tells her to leave Italy entirely, stating that she's wasted her time looking for him. Shao Jun, reading a portion of what Ezio wrote in his study, asks him that she just wanted understand what it takes to restore her order. Ezio informs her on why he is reluctant to help, stating that it could compromise his family. Afterwards, he would take her to Florence as company in handling some errands of his.

Ezio attends to his chores while Shao Jun kept watch. Afterwards, Ezio would take her to the plaza of the Palazzo della Signoria, where half of his family were killed. He would then lecture her on how an Assassin's line of work is done, before leaving back to his villa. In the midst of their departure, the two were intercepted by an armed soldier, who would then face Shao Jun in combat. After dealing with the soldier, the two flee, as more armed soldiers follow them.

As Ezio drove a carriage back to his villa, Shao Jun would explain her past. She explains that it was her mentor's plan to meet with him, though her mentor was taken by the same men in Venice. The soldiers were the imperial soldiers of Emperor Jiajing, who sought to recapture Shao Jun for her acts against his rule. After arriving at the villa, Ezio tells Sofia that she and the children to stay at Machiavelli's, fearing that the imperial soldiers would come. After his family left, Ezio and Shao Jun would stay to prepare for the men. After giving a lecture to Shao Jun about how he reformed the order in both Rome and Constantinople, Ezio would advise her to rest while he stays at the living room and keeps watch.

As Ezio waited, the armed men arrived as expected. While Shao Jun fought some of the soldiers in the upper floor, Ezio fought with the others at the lower floor, defeating three of them. Ezio, seeing the cannon-wielding brute readying to fire, Ezio hurriedly made his way to the upper floor to intercept the soldiers and save Shao Jun from the cannon's fire, which he does so successfully. Afterwards, both he and Jun would jump out of a window and onto the open field. There, both of them fought the cannon soldier, and after a tough fight, manages to kill him.

The day after, Ezio would bid Shao Jun farewell, as the latter thanks him for all his help. Before leaving, Ezio gives Jun a small chest, commenting that it can help her some day, though said that she should open it only when she loses direction. As several guards of the Tuscan government arrive, Ezio bids that Shao Jun should leave before they see her. She would then leave, while Ezio cleared things up with the guards.

Some time after, Ezio would finish writing in his study, and as Sofia informed him that she and Flavia were leaving for Florence, Ezio decides to come with them. There, Ezio sits down at a nearby bench while the two buy some groceries. As Ezio watched, a young man would sit down with him and berate the woman of Florence. Despite his disrespectful demeanor, the man would advise Ezio to rest before leaving his company. Ezio, as he looked on his wife and daughter, smiles. The two would look back, though with a look of distraught rather than happiness.

Ezio Auditore suffered a heart attack and passed away where he sat, at the age of 65. Left behind by him in his study was a letter addressed to Sofia. Written there:

{{quote|When I was a young man, I had liberty, but I did not see it. I had time, but I did not know it. And I had love, but I did not feel it. ==Development==
Embers was first revealed in June 6, 2011. The teaser trailer for Embers was released on 21 July 2011, while the full trailer for Embers was revealed on 23 July 2011, during the Comic-Con 2011 Panel. The Comic-Con 2011 Panel recommended watching Embers after completing Revelations, so that the events that unfold are experienced in sequence. The film would run for 21 minutes, offering a unique experience of Ezio's life, and bringing further closure to the Ezio saga.

Embers was subsequently released in DVD format with several special editions of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which was released on November 15, 2011.
Trivia
*Several movements during the attack on Ezio's villa were taken from animations within the game. For example, when Ezio disarms the soldier, it had the same animation when Ezio would disarm a guard utilizing a short blade.
*A portrait of Emilio Barbarigo, the same portrait found in Ezio's room in Monteriggioni during Assassin's Creed II, can be seen in his study room.
*Also, the Portrait of a Young Venetian Woman, the portrait of Sofia painted by Albrecht Dürer, can be seen in the villa's living room.
*Ezio's son, Marcello, was never seen in the movie. Though he can be seen sleeping in his and Flavia's room, Marcello's face was never shown.
*Shao Jun did not wield a hidden blade on her wrist, but on her shoes. Though she kept throwing needles held in bracers in their place.
*The letter left behind by Ezio had a seal with the Assassin insignia on it.
*Both Shao Jun and Flavia were dubbed by the same voice actor.
*A replica of Shao Jun's necklace is being sold in Ubiworkshop's store, for 24.99 US Dollars.
Vieri de' Pazzi (1454 - 1478) was a young Florentine noble, and a member of the Templar Order during the Renaissance.

Biography
Early life
Vieri was born somewhere in Tuscany, Italy - presumably in Florence - as the son of Francesco de' Pazzi.

However, he was soon confronted by Ezio, who had accompanied Mario, and after a brief, furious fight with Vieri and his guards at the top of a tower, Ezio triumphed and killed him.

Personality and characteristics

Final words
Ezio: What are you and your allies planning? Is this what my father discovered? Is this why he was killed?

Vieri: I'm sorry, were you hoping for a confession?

Ezio: Pezzo di merda! Vorrei solo che avessi sofferto di piu! Hai avuto la fine che meritavi! Spero che bru- (Piece of shit! I only wish you'd suffered more! You met the fate you deserved! I hope yo-)
Mario: Enough, Ezio! Show some respect.

Ezio: Respect? After all that's happened? Do you think he would have shown either of us such kindness?

Mario: You are not Vieri.

Monteriggioni was a town and commune of Tuscany, Italy. Built during the 13th century by the overlords of Siena, Monteriggioni was actively involved in the defense of Tuscany against Florentine attempts to gain more territory.

At the front of this conflict was the Auditore family, who later became the town's rulers and protectors. They constructed Monteriggioni's famous walls, and the largest structure within them, the Villa Auditore.

History
Domenico Auditore
In 1290, the Villa Auditore was constructed, though the identity of whoever built it was unknown. 30 years later, in 1320, the exterior of the villa was subsequently damaged in a Florentine attack.

Some time after the death of Dante Alighieri in 1321, Domenico Auditore bought and renovated the villa - changing the exterior, and adding a painting gallery - using funds he had gained from Marco Polo. Domenico and his son used Monteriggioni as a base of operations in their silent war against the Templars.

In 1296, what would become the Auditore Family Crypt was built in the town. After buying the villa, Domenico hid the Armor of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad in the Sanctuary under the villa, which could only be unlocked by Assassin seals that were scattered around Italy, hidden in sarcophagi of famous historical Assassins.

Mario Auditore
At some point in the early-mid 14th century, the Shroud was brought to Monteriggioni by the Assassins. They falsified Church records to claim the artifact was merely a forgery, before hollowing out the well of the town and leaving the Piece of Eden in a lair of elaborate traps.

In 1454, Mario Auditore was made sole ruler of Monteriggioni when his brother Giovanni moved to Florence. The town came under frequent attack by Florence during this time, leading Mario to strengthen the town's economy and defenses in order to better withstand Florentine pressure.

Soon after, Mario discovered that a man named Luciano Pezzati was causing strife within the town by turning families against each other. After he was captured and interrogated, Luciano revealed that Florence was planning a large attack on Monteriggioni. Rallying his forces, Mario successfully repelled the Florentine forces led by Federico da Montefeltro.

After defending the town, Mario continued to interrogate Luciano, only to discover that the purpose of the Florentine attack was to acquire an ancient artifact hidden underneath the town. With the help of several architects and historians, Mario eventually discovered the Shroud in the hollowed-out well of the town, and had it removed from Monteriggioni by Giovanni.

Over the next twenty years, Monteriggioni gradually fell into disrepair as Mario devoted more of his time to war and the Brotherhood. By 1476, most of the town's shops had closed, the number of visitors to Monteriggioni had decreased and the upkeep of the Villa Auditore had been neglected.

Ezio Auditore
On New Year's Eve 1476, Mario's nephew, Ezio Auditore, took shelter in Monteriggioni, and later became the town's biggest investor, and co-ruler with Mario. For over 23 years, Monteriggioni prospered as Ezio used the funds gathered during his adventures to reopen the town's shops, barracks, brothel and thieves' guild.

Significant improvements were also made to the town's infrastructure, and the Villa Auditore was renovated. By December 1499, Monteriggioni had become a vital headquarters of the Assassins, whose flag flew over the town. Around this time, cannons were added to the town's defenses by Mario.

On January 2nd 1500, Cesare Borgia - Captain-General of the Papal Army - led a siege on Monteriggioni in order to recover the Apple of Eden that had been taken by Ezio from the Templars. Though the Assassins were able to temporarily hold off the attack while the citizens were evacuated, the town eventually fell; resulting in Mario being killed, and the buildings of Monteriggioni suffering significant damage.

The Assassins abandoned the town, relocating their headquarters to Rome. However, at some later point afterwards, an elderly Ezio returned to Monteriggioni, entering the Sanctuary underneath the Villa Auditore for unknown reasons; though he most likely returned to retrieve the Armour of Altair, which was lost during the siege by the Borgias.

Prior to 1554, the Auditore family regained control of Monteriggioni, though the town was betrayed in 1554 by Giovannino Zeti, the keeper of the garrison and a Florentine exile, who was allowed to return to Florence in exchange for the keys to the city. Though the town was soon attacked and conquered by the Medici of Florence, they were allowed to continue their leadership over Monteriggioni, due to the Auditore's good relations with the Medici.

Modern Monteriggioni
By the 21st century, the town remained largely unchanged from its Renaissance appearance, and had become a tourist attraction, with a plaque in front of the ruined Villa Auditore commemorating the siege of the town by the Borgia.

On the 9th of September 2012, a small team of modern-day Assassins, composed of Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, arrived in the town of Monteriggioni to seek refuge from the Templars of Abstergo Industries. They set up a temporary hideout in the Sanctuary beneath the Villa Auditore, where the cell signals that Abstergo was using to locate them could not reach.

The group remained there for the next month as Desmond used the Animus to determine the location of Ezio's Apple of Eden, venturing above ground only at night or when supplies were needed. Also, while Desmond explored Monteriggioni at night, during his breaks from the Animus, he managed to recover some of his ancestors' possessions. After discovering the Apple's location, and the password to the door of the Colosseum Vault, the team left the town for Rome on October 10th 2012, 72 days from the launch of Abstergo's satellite.

Renovations
Upon his arrival in Monteriggioni, Ezio was able to invest in the renovation of various buildings throughout the town, with the help of an architect hired by Mario. As the town was renovated, the appearance of the Villa also improved, and flags (marked first with Auditore crest, then with the Assassin insignia) were also added to buildings.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the entrance to the Auditore Crypt is missing in Sequence 1. However, it appears again in modern-day Monteriggioni, outside the Animus.
*When Ezio returns to Monteriggioni after the Confrontation in the Vatican, all of the shops are unavailable for purchasing equipment from.
*As of 1500, there were at least 500 residents of Monteriggioni, which can be seen in the beginning of Brotherhood when Ezio must try and help the residents escape.
*The player is allowed to exit the Animus at any time to explore Monteriggioni, though only for ten minutes. The first time before doing so, Desmond must equip a watch and wireless earpiece, in order to remain in contact with Lucy, Rebecca and Shaun.
*In modern-day Monteriggioni, a strange red trail is visible when Eagle Vision is activated. The trail leads from the back entrance of the Villa Auditore to the beginning of the steps in front of the fountain bearing the Assassin insignia. After the completion of Sequence 6, the trail is no longer visible.
**Darby McDevitt and Falko Poiker explained that the trail was intended to help gamers find their way back to the Sanctuary, though its red color was an oversight.
*In 2012, the Art Merchant's shop is an information booth, while the Tailor's shop is a beverage stall.
*In the English version of Brotherhood, the plaque in front of the villa correctly says that the town was attacked by the forces of Pope Alexander VI, however, the Italian translation reads "Pope Alexander IV", reversing the "V" and "I".
*During Sequence 1, Ezio can go behind the Villa and enter Mario's study. The Codex Wall is present, but unlike Assassin's Creed II, the Codex will not glow in Eagle Vision.

The Abstergo laboratory was a special laboratory built by Abstergo Industries specifically for their Animus project. The Animus device itself was located in a the center of the laboratory, with Warren Vidic's desk located nearby, overlooking the Animus machine. Besides the Animus chamber, the laboratory consisted of other rooms and devices such as a conference room, bedroom, bathroom, and Animus terminal. Cryptic Messages could be seen throughout room through the use of Eagle Vision.

The landscape outside the laboratory was extremely bright. However, the building housing it was clearly in an urban environment, surrounded by skyscrapers. The laboratory was found on its fourth floor.

Abstergo Offices
During their escape, Lucy and Desmond exited the laboratory and made a path towards its underground parking lot. Similar its the lab, the rest of the Abstergo building was decorated in a modern-industrial style with overhead pipes and ventilation clearly visible, but minimalist detail elsewhere. In Desmond's words, Abstergo had some "fucked up interior decorators". There were numerous servers and computers found throughout its offices. Several small windows gave a glimpse into the world outside the office, showing a terrace garden surrounding a large part of the building.

As the two Assassins took an elevator down to another floor, they traversed through a floor of cubicles. These cubicles were each sealed with glass doors, although at the time, nobody was working in them. This may have indicated that employees were evacuated from the area once Abstergo learned that Lucy and Desmond were escaping. Furthermore, the pair only encountered security guards. The rows of cubicles also contained several Animus machines.
Lorenzo de' Medici (1449 - 1492) was an Italian statesman and de facto ruler of the Florentine Republic during the Italian Renaissance. Known as il Magnifico (the Magnificent) by contemporary Florentines, he was a diplomat, politician and patron of scholars, artists, and poets. His life coincided with the high point of the early Italian Renaissance; his death marked the end of the Golden Age of Florence. The fragile peace he helped maintain between the various Italian states collapsed with his death. Lorenzo de' Medici is buried next to his brother Giuliano in the Medici Chapel in Florence.

Biography
Early life
Lorenzo was the most brilliant of Cosimo de' Medici's grandsons, and was already a successful diplomat as a child. His father, Piero the Gouty, was ill and absent from Lorenzo's and his brother Giuliano's lives, but managed to significantly increase the number of those opposed to the Medici reign of Florence. Lorenzo's mother, Lucrezia Tornabuoni, was a poet, and managed to instill in him a love of art and beauty that would greatly influence his adult lifestyle. Like his brother, he enjoyed horseback riding and jousting, but spent more time studying art and literature. Lorenzo was Piero's and Lucrezia's third child, and his brother Giuliano was the fourth. They had two older sisters. Sometime in his youth, Lorenzo fell into the Arno river and was saved from drowning by Giovanni Auditore, a event which started the friendship between the two families.

Working with Giovanni
Lorenzo de' Medici was ruling over Florence, but several parties had conspired against the Medici family, trying to overthrow and move themselves into a position of power in their place. Lorenzo hired Giovanni Auditore, an Assassin, to investigate. Giovanni successfully captured one of Rodrigo Borgia's men, and handed him over to Lorenzo for interrogation. The man revealed an assassination plot to kill Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan and a powerful ally of Lorenzo's. Lorenzo then sent Giovanni to Milan in order to prevent the assassination. Unfortunately, Giovanni failed, and the assassination was successful; though Giovanni did manage to retrieve an encrypted paper from the thug that led the assassination.
<br clear="left"/>

Working with Ezio
On April 26th 1478, Francesco de' Pazzi unsuccessfully tried to assassinate Lorenzo and become the ruler of Florence. In a frenzy, he leaped on Giuliano and stabbed him nineteen times, killing him. Lorenzo was wounded by two of the other conspirators, Stefano da Bagnone and Antonio Maffei, but drew his sword in an attempt to stop them. Ezio, having consulted with La Volpe, soon came and saved Lorenzo, though Francesco escaped. Ezio then escorted Lorenzo to San Lorenzo for sanctuary. Once safely inside, Lorenzo asked Ezio to save Florence by killing Francesco, a task that Ezio successfully fulfilled. Soon after, Ezio met with Lorenzo on the Ponte Vecchio. There, Lorenzo told him how he had been saved from drowning when he was six years old by one of Ezio's kinsmen. He also gave Ezio the names of several Pazzi conspirators, who Ezio left to kill.

In 1479, Ezio returned to Florence and happened past the Palazzo Medici. Noticing that a red cross had been painted on one of the palazzo's doors, Ezio went inside, and found the corpses of some of Lorenzo's servants in the courtyard. He soon realized that Pazzi hitmen were searching for Lorenzo, who had gone into hiding. Ezio battled his way through the palazzo, killed the Pazzi soldiers and found Lorenzo hiding in one of his treasure rooms. Lorenzo once again thanked him, and as a reward, permitted Ezio to take whatever he wanted from the treasure room. After claiming his reward, Ezio left to continue his hunt for Jacopo de' Pazzi.

In 1480, Ezio successfully found and killed Jacopo de' Pazzi, therefore successfully killing all of the major Pazzi conspirators. He met with Lorenzo in the Palazzo Medici's external courtyard, and Lorenzo thanked him once again and rewarded him with the Medici cape.

Ezio worked as Lorenzo's personal Assassin by performing Assassination Contracts - which mainly involved weeding out the few remaining minor Pazzi conspirators - until Lorenzo died in 1492 at the age of 43.

Trivia
*In order to ensure that the player always has the ability to complete all of the Side Missions, the player is allowed to perform assassination contracts for Lorenzo in memory sequences that take place after Lorenzo's death. The Palazzo Medici Secret Location, which features Lorenzo, can be completed after Lorenzo's death as well.
*Though the people of Florence still love him even today, Lorenzo appears to be quite unpopular with other ruling powers in Italy. Besides the Templars and the Pazzi family, he was an enemy of Girolamo Riario, Lord of Forlì, and Giovanni Mocenigo, Doge of Venice. Additionally, according to Lineage (specifically Rodrigo's meeting with the Pazzi conspirators just prior to the Pazzi Conspiracy), and reliable historical accounts, the Pope does not bear goodwill towards Lorenzo and supports Rodrigo Borgia's movement against the Medici.
*In his database entry, it is revealed that Lorenzo loved to write poetry, and this may have contributed to his downfall.
*Though they had started to turn on Lorenzo, the people of Florence were so devastated by Lorenzo's early death that, according to historical accounts, the entire population of the city attended his funeral. His legacy remains today as one of the defining figures of Italian culture and art.
*Soon after the mission where he gives you the Medici cape, you will be able to see Lorenzo walking the streets of Florence. When you activate your eagle vision, he is marked with blue; though you are still able to kill him, given time.
*If Lorenzo's assassination contracts are all completed in order, from Florence to Tuscany to Forlì to Venice, certain trends become apparent. In Florence and Tuscany, most missions revolve around putting down supporters of the Pazzi family. Most of the Forlì missions involve preventing Girolamo Riaro from causing trouble (foreshadowing the revelation that he has ties with the Templars). But in Venice the tasks become somewhat mundane; such as dealing with someone who is harassing a friend of Lorenzo's and killing a Judge who commissioned paintings that made him seem more important than he actually was. The very last mission has Ezio kill a bounty hunter who had been after him, and Lorenzo does not send Ezio any more missions after this. It could be that Lorenzo realized that he had been abusing Ezio's skills, and had put his friend in danger as a result.
