The Shards of Eden were teal, ring-like Pieces of Eden, which were invented by the First Civilization to serve as personal shields for their wearers. The Shards projected an electromagnetic field which protected their wearers from projectile damage, such as energy weapons as well as conventional weapons.

At some point, a Shard came into the possession of the renowned privateer William Kidd, and its ability to deflect metal or, more specifically, metal musket balls, contributed to stories of Kidd's invincibility. Kidd eventually chose to hide his Shard on Oak Island, to keep it safe from Templar forces who sought it. To this end, Kidd created a map that provided clues to the Shard's location, and divided it among four of his former crew members.

Years later, the Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton managed to gather the four pieces of the map and, together with Robert Faulkner, the pair travelled to Oak Island to obtain the Shard.

Trivia
*Exposure to the Animus transferred the effects of the Shard to Desmond Miles.
Assassin's Creed: Forsaken is a novel written by Oliver Bowden, to be released on 4 December 2012 at the latest. The novel will focus on the events prior and during Assassin's Creed III, and will unveil Haytham Kenway's roots, showing the story of how he became a Templar.

Book summary
1735 – London, Haytham Kenway has been taught to use a sword from the age he was able to hold one. When his family's house is attacked – his father murdered and his sister taken by armed men, Haytham defends his home the only way he can...he kills. With no family, he is taken in by a mysterious tutor who trains him to become a deadly killer.

Consumed by his thirst for revenge, Haytham begins a quest for retribution, trusting no one and questioning everything he has ever known.
Conspiracy and betrayal surround him as he is drawn into the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and the Templars.
Trivia
*The release date, December 4, is also the date that Haytham was born.
*The prologue to the book was written by Connor, it read: "I never knew him. Not really. I thought I had, but it wasn't until I read this journal that I realized I hadn't really known him at all. And it's too late now. Too late to tell him I misjudged him. Too late to tell him I'm sorry."
*Unlike the other novels, Forsaken does not follow the same story as the game. It instead follows Haytham's story throughout the same time period.
