Horses are a species of hooved mammals used as a means of transport throughout most of recorded human history. Their presence and use was widespread throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance era.

Appearance
Colors
During the Third Crusade, horses residing in the stables just outside Masyaf were always either white, black, or chestnut; however, those found within the Kingdom, or at the entrances of cities, varied greatly in color.

Horses scattered throughout Renaissance Italy could also be found in a variety of colors.

Breeds
{{quote|The stable keeper gives me a short tour.
Three breeds of horse could be found and used throughout Rome, and differed in both appearance and characteristics.

The common horse or "Rouncey," heavily laden with saddle bags, could usually be found in the Antico and Campagna Districts, with the guards riding them (possibly messengers) always pushing them into a quick gallop.

The standard horse or "Jennet" was mostly found in the Centro and Vaticano districts, and was usually ridden by civilians. This horse was the fastest of the three breeds.

The rarest type, the armored warhorse or "Destrier," could be found in any of Rome's districts still occupied by the Borgia, or at stables after all had been renovated. Despite being the slowest type of horse, these armored horses were able to withstand more damage from enemy attacks without tripping.

History
The horse and the horse-drawn carriage were common modes of transportation, and indispensable for the Assassin Order from the Third Crusade until the Renaissance.

Third Crusade
The stables outside of Masyaf housed horses for the use of any Assassin who had been tasked to depart for any of the other cities, for missions or assassinations. A variety of horses could be found throughout the Kingdom as well, either in corrals and stables, or standing alone on the path, with their rider nearby.

However, guards stationed along the paths of the Kingdom were always wary of horsemen, particularly if they were riding hard, or acted as if they were being pursued. As such, most Assassins made it a point to ride slowly when in the presence of alert guards.

Renaissance
By the Renaissance, though ridden horses still held their importance, horse-drawn carriages had also grown in popularity. Travel stations could often be found just outside of major cities, and offered citizens safe and easy carriage rides, for a price.

Horses were also essential for warfare. Mario Auditore, as ruler and protector of Monteriggioni, always held the horses in high regard; since, as Mario once noted, "some of them will die alongside us; others will actually be key to keeping us alive." As such, each of his mercenaries were made to get to know their horse before riding out into battle.

Unlike in other cities previously, Ezio Auditore faced mounted opponents upon his arrival in Rome. As such, he learned to fight on horseback, assassinate horsemen, and dismount enemy riders, by either attacking them, or their horses.

Roman horses were used by citizens, guards and Assassins alike, with the latter able to hijack horses from the former two.

Combat and movement
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was a skilled horseman, and was able to use his sword to combat opponents while on horseback. When fleeing enemies, horses could usually outrun most pursuers, though they could be tripped by a strike from an enemy sword.

Though horses could easily plow through crowds, pulling the horse into a rear would normally startle nearby civilians, and clear a path.

Ezio Auditore was equally skilled at riding and combat, though he could also use a horse directly before or after free-running. He was able stand on the saddle at any time, and jump from horseback onto a wall or beam. Inversely, he could also jump directly onto horseback from a nearby building, or from a parachute.

Unlike Altaïr, Ezio (as well as any opponent he faced) was able to use a variety of his weapons while on horseback, both long and short-ranged; however, this excluded any heavy or two-handed weapon and the Hidden Blade.

Though Ezio could not remain on horseback while wielding his Hidden Blade, he could perform assassinations from horseback, or on enemy horsemen. He could leap from the saddle to assassinate either an enemy on the ground, or a mounted horseman (wherein he would subsequently steal their mount). When facing a mounted opponent while on the ground, Ezio could drag them from the saddle, and assassinate them.

Upon dismounting a horse, depending on whether or not the steed had been stolen, it would either follow its rider, or flee immediately. Additionally, if their rider was in battle next to them, horses would often kick out at attacking guards, and cause them to fall.

Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed, horses taken from within the Kingdom have a tendency to abruptly change color when passing from one region to another.
*Though Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood was the first to allow horses inside cities, early gameplay videos show that riding horses inside of a city was originally intended to be possible in Assassin's Creed.
*Horses are only used by guards in Assassin's Creed II during one mission, "Romagna Holiday", wherein they attack Leonardo da Vinci's carriage.
*So far throughout the Assassin's Creed series, only two rideable horses have ever died. The first died during the Fall of Monteriggioni, when it was hit by a collapsing tower damaged by cannon fire, and the second during the Siege of Viana, when it was struck by a cannonball.
**Never once in full, physical gameplay can a ridable horse die, only ever merely trip and cause the player to fall off. This can particularly be seen during the memory "Outgunned," as horses shot by the Machine gun will not die, and will only trip and get up again.
*In Assassin's Creed II, if you run over 3-4 civilians accumulatively, your horse will automatically trip, with a chance of killing Ezio.
*Other than the breeds of Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy also introduces the ceremonial Percheron, and two varieties of war horses.
*In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, the only time horses are encountered is during the carriage missions, and they are not ridable.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
*Brotherhood is the first game where citizens are shown on horseback; though this leads to a minor anachronism: female citizens are depicted as straddling their horse rather than side-saddle. Seeing a woman's legs spread apart was a most vulgar and insulting sight during the Renaissance period.
*Galloping is disabled throughout Rome; and is only possible in Viana, Monteriggioni, Colli Albani, and the Colosseo's Lair of Romulus.
**When the game was ported to the PC, the gallop option was reintroduced.
*Jumping from a horse onto a beam 20 times is a requirement for the completion of the Thieves guild challenge.

*The achievement "Grand Theft Dressage" can be unlocked by stealing five horses in a row, without touching the ground. However, you need the DLC to be able to obtain it.
*Destriers cannot be found in any color but white, despite their image in the in-game manual showing a black-furred coat.
*A minor glitch may occur if Ezio is using his sword while on horseback. If he is knocked off while attacking, when he gets back to his feet, he will still hold his sword with his arm raised above his head. It will remain this way, even when supposedly attacking or countering, until the weapon is sheathed.
*Players are able to rear Ezio's horse, by using the attack button with Fists equipped.
The Almogavars were fairly uncommon guards that appeared in Constantinople and Cappadocia during the Renaissance. Roughly comparable to the Brutes from Rome, they fought with heavy weapons, were rather slow compared to other enemies, wore thick armor, and could not freerun. Like the Varangians, the Almogavars were employed by the Byzantines. They are featured in several missions, and were scattered all over the underground city of Cappadocia.

Trivia
*The Almogavars were historically soldiers of Aragonese and Catalan origin. They were known to have worked as mercenaries for the Byzantine Empire.
*The Almogavars, like the Janissaries – except in some missions – are always found carrying the same weapon: the Almogavar Axe.
*The Almogavar Axe can also be used as a weapon, after completing The Champion, Part 1 memory, or taking the axe from a dead Almogavar.
*It is peculiar that Almogavars use heavy weapons in-game, as they used lances and spears historically, a fighting style which is more similar to that of the Seekers than the Brutes.
*Most Templar Den Captains look and fight like Almogavars. Exceptions include the Bayezid North captain, who appears the same as a Byzantine Militia, and the Imperial South captains, both of whom look like Byzantine gunmen.
*Unlike Brutes in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Almogavars can be killed with a counter if their attack is not the overhead smash while using a medium weapon or short blade.
*Almogavars seem to have a unique weakness to Datura Bombs, as evidenced from both in the memory "Piri Reis: Datura" and usual gameplay; the poison kills them about twice as fast.

AC2
Heavy weapons were weapons that relied on sheer force and power to inflict bone-breaking damage.

Strength
When swung with sufficient strength, the weapons were able to smash through attempts to parry with smaller weapons. Opponents caught under the full weight of the blow mostly collapsed or could even drop their weapons. Heavy weapons could only be countered by Long or other Heavy weapons (with the Hidden Blade being an exception, as it can counter any weapon; though the small timing window involved makes the maneuver more difficult and thus risky).

Defense
The Assassin Ezio Auditore could disarm his opponent with his fists. If he was equipped with the Hidden Gun or Poison Blade, Ezio would automatically counter with his Hidden Blade. Counters with these powerful weapons were always lethal to the target, but sometimes he would leave the weapon in the victim's body.

Smash Kill
Before the siege of Monteriggioni, Ezio acquired the Smash skill through training with the mercenary instructor in Monteriggioni, and he could use it whenever he had a heavy weapon equipped. A smash took a long time to build up, during which he was vulnerable to interruption. But when a fully charged Smash connected, it broke through enemy defense to cause a large amount of damage and further effects. It was unparryable, and the victim would get disarmed, or possibly have a long weapon broken.

When in Rome, the Smash skill was no longer available, and had been replaced by the ability to throw heavy weapons at enemies. This could be done to perform instant kills on enemies up to around ten meters away. Note that one would have to pick up the heavy weapon after throwing it, and if the user picked up a different weapon, their weapon would change to that, and one would have to go to a blacksmith to re-equip the heavy weapon (at no cost). This skill did not need to be learned, unlike the Smash skill.

Heavy Sheath
Ezio could purchase a heavy sheath from a Tailor shop after he had traveled to Rome. This allowed him to equip two-handed weapons as his primary weapon, so that he had a choice of 6 more weapons. If Ezio had a two-handed weapon as his primary weapon, however, he could not carry another primary one-handed melee weapon (e.g. Swords, Warhammers, etc.). If he dropped his heavy weapon, he could pick up a different one that he had not yet purchased and equip it, (you can re-equip one-handed weapons upon returning to the Tiber Island Hideout, as well as armor).
Trivia
* Heavy Weapons can be re-obtained from bodies after they have been lodged in them through combat by simply picking up the body, which will cause the weapon to drop off. This also happens when a long weapon has been lodged into bodies. However in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, you can pick up the heavy weapon or long weapon directly from the body.
* The maximum amount of combo hits is 3.
* Players can disarm a weapon attack from Brutes in the first attempt, whereas it can take several attempts to disarm Elite or Leader Guards who are considerably less powerful damage-wise.
* Heavy Weapons are the most common weapons used by the Mercenaries.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio has the ability to throw heavy and long weapons at his enemies. Heavy weapons will get stuck in the target's head while the long weapons will impale the target.
* Taunting with the "Head" button will make it easier to disarm tougher guards such as Brutes or Papal Guards.
* In Assassin's Creed II, brutes can be disarmed easily; however, in Brotherhood the brutes are very difficult to disarm, making the heavy weapons harder to obtain.
* A heavy weapon cannot be used to knock a guard off his horse; a medium sword is needed for that. A heavy weapon (like medium weapons) can counter a guard on his horse and knock him off in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
* Assassin Apprentices below the rank of Assassino can wield axes. Although these weapons are described as axes in the loadout screen of the Apprentice, they can manifest themselves as heavy swords as well.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, although Ezio can no longer perform the Smash skill, enemies still can. They can not, however, perform the disarm move.
* Occasionally, when a heavy weapon is thrown at a guard that is in mid-air, it will stay in his head and he will stand still. The guard will appear dead and won't attack Ezio. When the player removes the heavy weapon from the body, however, the weapon will fall to the ground and can be retrieved as usual.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, heavy weapons lack the ability to counter-attack other heavy weapon/long weapon users, except during an execution or counter-kill animation. Long weapons retain the ability to counter other long weapons/heavy weapons.
* In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, heavy weapons can now be countered against with medium weapons and short blades.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed II it is the only type of weapon that can counter-kill a spear wielding guard. However in Assassin's Creed: Revelations they cannot counter the guards who wield them, Varangians. If, however, you get another type of guard to use a long weapon, you can counterkill them successfully.
* The Broadsword in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, although listed as a heavy weapon, is wielded like a medium weapon. However the sound effects in the kill animations are a mix of both medium weapons and heavy weapons.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, heavy weapons no longer get lodged into enemies when counterkilling them, allowing you to keep using them for the duration of the battle unless they are thrown.

* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, heavy weapons no longer get lodged into enemies when counterkilling them, allowing you to keep using them for the duration of the battle unless they are thrown.

However in Assassin's Creed : Revelations they can not.
* The Broadsword in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, although listed as a heavy weapon, is wielded like a medium weapon. However the sound effects in the kill animations are a mix of both medium weapons and heavy weapons.
* In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, heavy weapons no longer get lodged into enemies when counterkilling them, allowing you to keep using them for the duration of the battle unless they are thrown.
The Varangians were guards in Constantinople and Cappadocia. Similarly to the Almogavars, they were Byzantine guards. They were the equivalent of Seekers in Rome, as they fought with halberds and spears. They also wielded pistols that they could use when disarmed or when Ezio escaped to somewhere they could not follow.
Trivia
*Historically, the Varangians Hailed from Scandinavia and parts of Medieval Russia and after 1066, from England as well, and from the 9th to 14th century, served as the personal guard of the Byzantine Emperor, functioning similarly to the Janissaries, who were the personal guard of the Ottoman Sultan.
*Historically, the Varangians wielded two handed Danish Axes, making them more akin to Brutes than Seekers
*In the artbook of Assassin's Creed: Revelations, concept art of the Varangians show that they were supposed to wield one handed swords, just like any normal guard. Also in the artbook, they were labeled as "Paranoid" instead of Varangians.
*Looting or stealing from Varangians will give Ezio Smoke Screen Bombs or Smoke Decoy Bombs should his tactical or diversionary pouches be empty.
*Varangians are the only guards you cannot counter.

Seekers were guards who, as their name suggested, would search through hiding places, on the suspicion that an Assassin had taken refuge within one.

They were slightly more heavily-armored than a standard guard, though less so than Brutes, and always carried long weapons such as spears and halberds.

Combat
Seekers were extremely intelligent, and would persistently search wagons, wells and piles of hay in an attempt to find hidden Assassins, whether or not they had previously seen one. They often traveled with other lower-ranked soldiers, usually as a pair, or in groups of four.

Upon engaging an enemy in battle, a Seeker could perform both normal and special attacks.

Normal attacks
The Seekers' normal attacks could be blocked using any weapon, however, they could not be countered with any sheath-able weapon or short blade.

Instead, they could only be countered lethally with a heavy weapons, another long weapon carried by Seekers themselves, or a Hidden Blade. The timing for the latter was rather difficult, however, due to the much smaller window of opportunity for the counter.

An attack could also be evaded, or countered through an empty-handed disarm, which could in turn be followed up with a lethal counter-attack with the Seeker's own weapon.

Special attacks
The Seeker's armed special attack, the Sweep, would knock a target to the ground by sweeping their feet out from under them. This did no damage, though it opened up the target to follow-up attacks as they lay on the ground.

The Sweep could not be countered, and needed to be either interrupted or dodged. A Seeker about to perform a Sweep would raise his weapon up and to his right at an approximately 45 degree angle.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze could mimic the Seekers, and performed his own Sweep attack. He used two varieties, a short-ranged and long-ranged one, with the latter reaching more enemies in a single swing.

Seekers could also throw sand at their enemies, blinding them momentarily and opening them up for an attack. Similarly to the Sweep, this could be evaded, but not countered.

Trivia
Special seekers
*During the final fight with Rodrigo Borgia in the Capella Sistina, he attacks and defends much like a Seeker, though he has far more health. He may even use the Sweep attack characteristic to Seekers.
*The Farmer, a lieutenant of Girolamo Savonarola during the Bonfire of the Vanities, carries a pitchfork and fights like a Seeker.
*Certain Papal Guards from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood fight and are armed similarly to Seekers.
*The Byzantines Templar faction in Assassin's Creed: Revelations possess a variation on Seekers known as Varangians.

Appearance
*Seekers are much more common in Brotherhood than in Assassin's Creed II, with many leading patrol groups.
*In the mission "Infrequent Flier", in the cutscene where Ezio abandons a burning Flying Machine, you can see a Seeker and a Brute on the roof of the Palazzo Ducale. Strangely, these are the only two guards that cannot free-run or climb.
*In Florence, Strangely, the only seekers you can find are Venetian Seekers.

Combat
*A disarmed Seeker has roughly the same mobility as an Agile guard.
*When trying to escape a battle, Seekers will not be the only guards to search nearby hiding spots; all guards will search for you until you have become anonymous again.
*In Assassin's Creed II, if engaged in a fight with several other guards and a disarmed Seeker, the Seeker will (very rarely) grab Ezio from behind and hold him to allow the others to attack. In Brotherhood, this can be performed by any guard.
*In Brotherhood, unlike in Assassin's Creed II, Seekers cannot be counter killed with a heavy weapon unless while on a kill streak.
*In Assassin's Creed II, if you dodge a seeker's Sweep attack, Ezio will use his bracer to break the spear, and force the seeker to use one of the Improvised weapons.
