By 1510, the Caribbean Assassins were known to be located in [[Florida]], where they discovered and protected the [[Fountain of Youth]], which held an [[Apples of Eden|Apple of Eden]]. That year, the Assassins welcomed the former slave and translator for the Spanish Army, [[Alonso Carlo]], and his adopted son [[Miguel Ramón Carlo de Lugo]], after their escape from persecution by [[Juan Ponce de León]]. In 1521, Ponce de León arrived in Florida searching for the Fountain of Youth, where he was halted by Miguel. In 1673, [[Thomas Kavanagh, Jr.|Thom Kavanagh]], a native of Boston who worked at [[Peter Beckford]]'s estate in [[Jamaica]], was pursued by the [[Grand Master]] of the Caribbean Templars, [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]]. Knowing Kavanagh to be a [[Sages|Sage]], a reincarnation of [[Aita]], Torres believed the man knew the location of the [[Observatory]]. In an effort to keep the Templars from learning the Observatory's location, the Assassins, with [[Bahlam]], intercepted Kavanagh and brought him to Tulum. Kavanagh refused to share the Observatory's location with the Assassins, while he couldn't explain the visions that haunted him. Bahlam accepted the explanation, and let Kavanagh leave the island with the help of Bahlam's son, [[Ah Tabai]].<ref name="AC4"/>

===Under Ah Tabai===
Four decades later, Ah Tabai became the [[Mentor]] of the Caribbean Assassins, and made the recovery and protection of the Sage one of the Order's highest priorities. However, despite his efforts, the Assassins were not able to locate Kavanagh's successor before he was captured by the Templars.<ref name="AC4"/>

Ah Tabai tasked the Assassin [[Duncan Walpole]] with leading a team to rescue the Sage, unaware that Walpole had defected to the Templar Order and intended to assist them. Duncan failed in his task however, due to his demise at the hands of the [[Piracy|pirate]] [[Edward Kenway]]. Kenway then unknowingly harmed the Assassins by delivering the locations of bureaus in the Caribbean, as well as a [[Blood vials|blood vial]], to Torres and the Templars.<ref name="AC4"/>

Torres revealed that the new Sage was a man by the name of [[Bartholomew Roberts]] whom they intended to interrogate to uncover the location of the Observatory. The Assassins attempted to free Roberts via ground assault in Havana and were ultimately unsuccessful, though Roberts later managed to escape Templar custody.<ref name="AC4"/>

In 1716, Tulum was attacked by a British regiment led by a Templar-allied slaver [[Laurens Prins]]. Kenway, with the help of [[Mary Read]], managed to defend the Assassin encampment and push back the attackers, though Tulum was continually assaulted by the Templars in the following years. Edward became an uneasy ally of the Assassins, tracking the Templars who hunted the bureau leaders across the Caribbean.<ref name="AC4"/>

In 1722, after repeated attacks on Tulum from both the [[Royal Navy|Royal]] and [[Spanish Navy]], Kenway offered his hideout on [[Great Inagua]] to the Brotherhood. Ah Tabai accepted and eventually moved the Order to the new location, though he expressed concern that their headquarters might be compromised again. He therefore decided to scatter the Order among the people, similar to what [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] did with the Levantine Assassins in the 12th century.<ref name="AC4"/>

In the mid 1730s, Ah Tabai recruited [[Achilles Davenport]] as his last student. Around 1740, Achilles was sent to the North American colonies to establish a Brotherhood there. After the death of Torres, [[Rhona Dinsmore]]'s Assassins soon took control of the underworld in Havana. As she was too busy keeping Havana safe from conflict between the colonial empires, Rhona requested Achilles to eliminate de Ferrer if given the opportunity.<ref name="ACRG"/>

The son of the nobles Tomas de Torres y Ayala and Elvira de Quadros Castellanos, Laureano de Torres y Ayala was born in 1645 in [[Havana]], Cuba, but raised in [[Madrid]], Spain. Torres joined the Spanish Army in his late teens and became a Templar in his twenties. Around this time, Torres with tasked by the Templar counsel to locate the Observatory. In 1673, Torres came into contact with the [[Sages|Sage]] [[Thom Kavanagh]], who was in the employ of [[Peter Beckford]] at the time. Although Torres tried to speak with Kavanagh further that evening, a group of [[Assassins]], led by the [[Mentor]] [[Bahlam]], attacked Torres' men and escaped with the Sage.<ref name="BF">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

Thanks to the Templars' connections, he was later appointed governor of the Spanish territories in Florida, a post he held from 1693 to 1699. He then returned to [[Europe]] to participate in the War of Spanish Succession.<ref name="BF"/>

In 1708, Torres was appointed governor of Cuba, a position he held until he was arrested on charges of corruption in 1711. Torres was eventually acquitted of these charges and managed to win a re-election bid two years later. During his tenure as governor, Torres made various lasting improvements to the city, including the fortification of the island's defenses and kick-starting the tobacco production, which strengthened the economy of both Cuba and the Templar Order. During this time, he took on the brutish man known as [[El Tiburón]] as his personal bodyguard.<ref name="BF"/>

===Search for the Observatory===

At some point, Torres was entrusted with the task of locating a [[First Civilization]] site known as the [[Observatory]]. After two decades of searching, Torres was contacted by [[Duncan Walpole]], a treacherous Assassin that desired to join the Templar Order. Seeing this as an opportunity to deliver a crippling blow to the Assassins and procure further information on the Observatory, Torres arranged a meeting with Walpole, who was to bring maps that detailed the locations of [[Assassin bureau]]s in the West Indies, as well as an empty [[Blood vials|blood vial]].<ref name="BF"/>

Along with fellow Templars [[Julien du Casse]] and [[Woodes Rogers]], Torres plotted to use the Sage [[Bartholomew Roberts]], who was in their custody, to gain access to the Observatory, in order to control the European Empires from behind the scenes. Unbeknownst to Torres however, Walpole had been killed by the [[Piracy|pirate]] [[Edward Kenway]], who arrived in Havana to collect the reward initially promised to Walpole. Oblivious to this, Torres formally inducted 'Walpole', Rogers and Du Casse into the Templar Order, before explaining his plans.<ref name="BF"/>

The next morning, the four met again at Havana's docks, where they took Roberts into their custody. However, while escorting the man to Torres' mansion, the group was attacked by Assassins. Kenway managed to save Torres from his attackers and recapture the Sage, who had fled in the confusion. Torres then paid Kenway for his services and dismissed him. However, Kenway was unsatisfied with the amount he had been paid and decided to free Roberts from Torres' prison, seeing an opportunity for greater gain within the Observatory.<ref name="BF"/>

Although Kenway was able to access the prison, he found that Roberts had already escaped once more. Torres then reappeared and sent an imprisoned Kenway to the [[Spanish Treasure Fleet|treasure fleet]] docked in Havana's harbor.<ref name="BF"/>

===Relocating the Sage===

In November of 1715, Torres spoke with the [[Netherlands|Dutch]] [[Slavery|slaver]] [[Laurens Prins]] about Roberts, but was unsuccessful in discovering the man's location. In 1716, Torres retired from the post of governor, founding charities such as hospitals.<ref name="BF"/>

While the Observatory remained Torres' primary concern, the disruption of the Templars' naval activities by [[Samuel Bellamy]], an Assassin posing as a pirate, also became a matter of concerns. In January 1717, the Grand Master secretly met with British pirate hunter and fellow Templar [[Francis Hume]], asking him to intensify his efforts to stop Bellamy and those working with him, thus preventing more harm to the interests of the Templars.<ref name="P">''[[Assassin's Creed: Pirates]]''</ref>

Weeks later, Prins contacted Torres and claimed to have Roberts in his possession. Torres gathered an appropriate amount of gold to secure Robert's ransom and made sail for [[Kingston]], stopping at the [[Forts|fort]] of [[Fort Matías|Punta Guarico]] along the way. Edward Kenway had learned of the large sum of gold and overran the fort, discovering Torres calmly sipping tea in the war room as the fort burned. However, instead of simply taking the treasure, Kenway decided instead to use Torres as bait in a plan to locate Roberts and once again try to learn the location of the Observatory.<ref name="BF"/>

Together with Kenway, Torres arrived in Kingston and met with Prins, walking with the Dutchman through the city's streets. Discussing politics, slavery, and war along the way, the two eventually came to a stop, where Torres tried to bargain with Prins. However, the slaver had spotted Kenway and the Assassin [[Mary Read|James Kidd]] tailing them, and both men fled while the two pirates fought off a group of [[guards]].<ref name="BF"/>

Two years later, in 1719, Torres was in the city once again, this time meeting with Woodes Rogers and the newly converted [[Benjamin Hornigold]] to discuss another attempt to locate the Sage. After learning that Hornigold had sent two of his men, [[Josiah Burgess]] and [[John Cockram]], to the [[Africa]]n island of [[Príncipe]], Torres left and returned to Cuba. However, during their conversation, Torres insisted that his fellow Templars store a drop of their blood in a blood vial, as an oath of loyalty to their Order, which would later be sent to a Templar warehouse in [[Rio de Janeiro]] via a [[Portuguese Navy|Portuguese fleet]]. The other Templars agreed and gave their blood with the understanding of it not being used, though Torres himself secretly submitted the blood of a decoy; Edward Kenway would later recover these blood vials, alongside Bartholomew Roberts.<ref name="BF"/>

In 1722, the Templars finally located the Observatory in [[Long Bay]], [[Jamaica]]. Due to the respect and admiration he commanded from the people of Cuba, Torres was able to gather a few regiments of Spanish troops for the expedition. Torres left El Tiburón and his decoy in Havana and made sail for the complex. Now allied with the Assassins, Kenway tailed El Tiburón through Havana's streets and arrived at the [[Castillo San Salvador de la Punta]], where he killed both El Tiburón and Torres' decoy. Realizing Torres' deceit, Kenway hastily headed for the Observatory.<ref name="BF"/>

Despite this, Torres had accessed the facility before Kenway had arrived, his troops having massacred the [[guardians]] of the Observatory and set their village ablaze. Torres unintentionally activated a series of deadly security measures which killed most of his men. After eliminating the surviving soldiers by utilizing the defences, Kenway climbed around the chamber before leaping down on Torres from above and stabbing him with his Hidden Blade, killing the Grand Master with his [[Hidden Blade]]. As part of his dying words, Torres complimented Kenway on the strength of his belief in mankind's right to be free.<ref name="BF"/>

Torres held disgust over the practice of slavery, and even his questionable assertion that to "enslave a man's mind and [their] body will follow on naturally" may or may not have been a clever way to talk Rogers out of participating in such a practice. He was utterly convinced in the Templars' purpose to guide the fate of civilizations, and had the capacity to even respect the Assassins' strength of conviction.<ref name="BF"/>

A courteous man, Torres had an impeccable charm. He believed in an enlightened plutocracy where the best and brightest could thrive regardless of circumstances and upbringing, and was notably the only Templar to have treated Kenway with a substantial amount of respect heedless of his class, while his compatriots had a more notable tendency to mock and belittle Kenway, mainly due to his station, and for his initial lack of ideals.<ref name="BF"/>

Torres was notable for a conspicuous lack of ruthlessness; he not only stopped El Tiburón from beating Kenway more than was necessary, but also sought to spare him a second time, albeit for a price, when he was captured. The only time when he was shown to display any overt sign of maliciousness was when his soldiers slaughtered through the Observatory guardians. This could also be considered his chief failing in leadership, as the Templars were initially in a massively disadvantaged position, and would not have regained the upper-hand without Duncan Walpole's defection; as Grand Master he may have had something to do with the situation.<ref name="BF"/>

Du Casse was born in Montpellier, France in 1682. Joining his uncle, {{Wiki|Jean-Baptiste du Casse|Jean du Casse}}, Julien took to sea at a young age and fought in the [[War of the Spanish Succession]]. During the war, he became disgusted at the French and [[Spain|Spanish]] monarchy for choosing reputation and bloodlines over talent and skill, but nonetheless continued to serve his country.

In 1704, du Casse deserted from the [[French Navy]] during the {{Wiki|Battle of Málaga (1704)|Battle of Vélez-Málaga}} and, seeking fortune, traveled to the New World. Initially, he found work in [[Africa]] as a [[Slavery|slave trader]], but found himself lacking the cruelty and detachment to continue partaking in said industry. After a year, he departed for the West Indies, in search of another vocation.

Du Casse spent his next ten years in the West Indies as a mercenary, working for anyone that was willing to pay him. In this way, he eventally came into contact with the Governor of [[Cuba]], Laureano de Torres y Ayala, in whom he found a friend and confidant.

===Joining the Templars===

In July 1715, du Casse, [[Woodes Rogers]] and [[Duncan Walpole]] had arranged a meeting with Torres, to be inducted into the Templar Order. Staying at the governor's residence in [[Havana]], du Casse and Rogers found themselves waiting longer than expected, as the man they believed to be Duncan Walpole arrived a week late. In actuality, the man that joined them was a [[Piracy|pirate]] named [[Edward Kenway]] who had assumed his identity in order to claim Duncan's promised reward.

Following the introductions, du Casse, Rogers and Kenway passed the time with a shooting session, as Torres was not yet ready to meet with them. After Kenway beat Rogers' shooting challenge, du Casse noted the absence of "Duncan's" [[Hidden Blade]]s, which Kenway explained to be due to his previous pair having been damaged beyond repair. Du Casse then handed Kenway a new pair that he had collected from dead [[Assassins]].

Before their meeting with Torres, du Casse and Rogers requested that "Duncan" show his skills in assassination techniques; thanks to Kenway's [[freerunning]] abilities, he was able to mimic these techniques with very little effort. The three then went to join Torres, who, after inspecting the [[Blood vials|blood vial]] Kenway had brought with him, led them inside, where he officially inducted them into the Order.

Torres subsequently revealed his plans of locating the [[Observatory]], with the help of a [[Sages|Sage]] named [[Bartholomew Roberts|John Roberts]], which would further the Templars' goals of a [[New World Order]]. Du Casse expressed his skepticism to the credibility of a Sage, noting it had been over four decades since the [[Thom Kavanagh|last]] Sage was found, though Torres reassured him they were certain. After toasting their schemes, the group of Templars made arrangements to convene the next day at the [[Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta]] and then retired for the night.

The next morning, du Casse and his Templar allies met the captured Roberts, and mentioned that a Sage's blood was required to enter the Observatory. While escorting Roberts to Torres' mansion, the Templars managed to fend off an Assassin attack, during which the Sage was nearly able to escape. With Rogers leaving for [[United Kingdom|England]], the other Templars decided to imprison Roberts and interrogate him the day after.

However, Roberts managed to escape later that night, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. When the Templars arrived at the prison, they found Kenway instead, who had just arrived with the intention of interrogating Roberts himself. Realizing he was an imposter, the Templars apprehended Kenway and sent him to be taken with the [[Spanish Treasure Fleet]] as a prisoner.

Following this turn of events, du Casse earned Torres' trust and was tasked with ensuring a constant flow of weapons, ammunition and gold to the [[Grand Master]]. As well as this, he was appointed captain of one of Torres' largest [[Man O' War|galleons]], ''[[El Arca del Maestro]]'', which du Casse would frequently dock in the natural cove of Great Inagua, his island hideout.

Unbeknownst to du Casse, however, Kenway had escaped his imprisonment aboard the Spanish Treasure Fleet, and later sought to acquire ''El Arca del Maestro'', so that it could be used as a defensive measure for the pirate republic of [[Nassau]]. To achieve this, and prevent news of his survival from getting back to the Templars, Kenway infiltrated the island and bypassed du Casse's [[guards]]. While du Casse was busy preparing for another voyage, Kenway snuck onto the [[Ships|vessel]]'s rigging and struck the Templar from above.

As he lay dying, du Casse berated Kenway for his small ambition and ignorance, calling him a "parasite", though the pirate ignored these words and took the [[Templar keys|key]] that was in du Casse's possession. Refusing to tell Kenway about the key's function, du Casse cursed the pirate, before passing away.

Kenway would later take du Casse's hideout for his own, renovating the village and manor, and collect the four other Templar keys to gain access to a special [[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag#Templar armor|set of armor]].

==Trivia==
*Julien is a French variant of Julian, ultimately derived from [[Greece|Greek]] ιουλος (''ioulos''), meaning "downy-bearded".
*Du Casse's penchant for collecting Hidden Blades from murdered Assassins, as well as the pride he shows in his grisly collection, is remeniscent of General Grievous from the ''Star Wars ''franchise, who enjoyed collecting the lightsabers of Jedi he murdered.
