The apprentices, also referred to as recruits, are Assassins who were formerly citizens saved by Ezio Auditore from the rough streets of Rome, during the war against the Templars. They have subsequently devoted themselves to learning the ways of the Assassin Order, motivated by their lust for revenge against the Borgia for corrupting the beautiful city of Rome.

Operating out of the Tiber Island headquarters, the apprentices were sent on missions across Europe in order to improve their skills and combat experience beyond their traditional training. However, the apprentices did not always survive these missions. When not on missions assigned by Ezio outside Rome, the apprentices would support the efforts of Ezio and his allies, providing reinforcement during Ezio's own missions.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Recruiting
After destroying a Borgia Tower, symbols will randomly appear on your map where citizens can be recruited. You can choose whether to save them or not, but they will eventually die if you don't. After saving a citizen from the guards, you'll have a choice to either speak to them or leave them, if you speak to them they will always join you, if you don't talk to them, they will eventually disappear. After successfully recruiting someone for his cause, Ezio sends them to Niccolò Machiavelli to become an Assassin. You can only recruit twelve apprentices (all of whom can be either male or female), but if one dies, they can always be replaced.

On the Field
In-game, Ezio is able to have up to six support him during his missions, and each time they fight, they will gain experience points to rank up. On the field, Ezio signals these Assassins by raising his arm and clenching his fist, indicating that they should strike. This signal, followed by an eagle's screech, is known as a "B.A.M." or a Brotherhood Assistance Maneuver. The apprentices can appear from anywhere, usually from inside hiding spots or over ledges. Particularly when against a mounted enemy, the apprentices can also come in on horseback, and can engage in horse chases. On rare occasions, when there are no hiding spots or buildings to appear from, the apprentices may be teleported into the battle by the Animus.

Missions
During the course of the game, players have the opportunity to send the apprentices to different cities across Europe to complete tasks and assassinations. If they finish the mission, the apprentices earn money for Ezio and experience points; but if they die, they will be lost forever. The chances of the Assassins completing the mission depend on how difficult the mission is, the amount of experience the Assassins already have, and how many Assassins you send. Though sending more Assassins increases the probability of success, each receive less experience, as the total experience gained must be divided equally among all of them. Missions take place in Rome, Florence, Venice, Constantinople, Lisbon, Barcelona, Moscow, Paris, London, Cologne and Calicut.

Customization
Players can also customize the apprentices' colors of their robes. Each one of the apprentices also has a different personality. Later on, players can use the experience points they've gained to upgrade their apprentices' armor and weapons. Once an apprentice achieves rank ten (Assassino) his/her armor will change and appear to look almost identical to Ezio's Master Assassin outfit, only having very subtle differences such as the cloak where the color is decided by the customized color they wore as "Students". These Master Assassin robes that the apprentices wear cannot be customized however, and always remain as Assassin White.

BAM System
As Ezio recruits and trains more apprentices, he will gain signals, which appear as red bars underneath the Synchronization bar. Up to 3 signals can be earned. The signals represent the amount of times Ezio can use the BAM system (Brotherhood Assistance Maneuver) which allows him to call his apprentices to aid him in the field.

The first signal is rewarded once one Assassin apprentice is recruited, then another when you have 4 Assassin apprentices. The third and final signal is unlocked once you have 6 Assassin apprentices. Once Ezio has used a signal, the signal won't be usable until roughly one minute has passed, and using all three of them will not allow Ezio to use the BAM until the first one has recharged. BAM signals can become unavailable if an insufficient number of apprentices are present in the guild, such as if some have left on missions.

Apprentices can also ride and use horses in battles, either attacking on horseback with their sword or hidden gun, or performing assassinations from horseback.

The apprentices are capable of three attack strategies:
*The Arrow Storm: This move is particularly useful if Ezio is blocked by a group of guards. He signals to the apprentices, and they shoot arrows at the targets and kill any in sight. If there is a large number of apprentices to aid Ezio, all the guards will be killed simultaneously. You must have at least six Assassin apprentices at your disposal to use the arrow storm, as it requires all 3 signals to use.
*The Air Assassination: This move is where the apprentices jump and assassinate the indicated targets. If there are some enemies remaining, the apprentices engage them in combat.
*The Smoke Assassination: A combination of air assassinating and smoke bombs, the apprentices jump and assassinate as many enemies as possible, then throw smoke bombs, creating a distraction and allowing Ezio to move in and attack as well.

Known In-game Apprentices
The following is an alphabetical list of known names of apprentices that appear in the game, which are randomly generated for each citizen Ezio saves. Blue denotes male, red denotes female:
Trivia
*While all apprentices wear default uniforms similar to Ezio's, not all of them are ever exactly the same.
*The apprentices are equipped with only a single hidden blade, unlike Ezio who is granted two. They do, however, acquire a hidden gun, smoke bombs and various melee weapons as they level up.
*Though you can only have twelve apprentices at a time, the ability to recruit them is infinite, which means that, even if many of them die in battle, they can always be replaced.
*Apprentices are able to grab the horse of a dismounted enemy. This prevents its escape, and allows either Ezio or the Assassin himself or herself to ride it.
*Gabriel Graziani, the Community Developer for Brotherhood, had once stated that there will be a special cutscene when an Assassin dies. Although there is no such cut scene, Ezio may approach and close the eyes of the fallen Assassin, honoring them.
*It was stated by developers that the player could pick a single Assassin recruit to be a "right-hand Assassin." However, this action is not present in any form in the game.
*Once an apprentice is promoted to the rank of Assassino, there is a cut scene showing the Assassin performing a Leap of Faith into the Tiber, while Ezio and Niccolò watch. (Even though they cannot swim, they somehow survive the leap of faith into the river.)
*Assassins can't swim, but when they fall in water they are just gone and not dead, so you could use them again later.
*When managing Assassins for an Assassination contract, even when the odds of success are 100%, sometimes the mission can still be failed, although you will not lose the Assassin(s) used for that contract.
*It is possible to kill an apprentice by using the Apple of Eden with him/her in the blast range.
*There is an interesting glitch when both an Assassin and Ezio try to assassinate the same guard simultaneously. You will both appear to leap on him in high profile, but Ezio will then promptly teleport onto the next closest guard, killing him as well.
*Sometimes when Assassins are called into battle, they will jump out of haystacks, without any explanation of how they got there, or how long they had been waiting inside.
*The Assassins receive no damage from falling, even from the top of the Castel Sant'Angelo.
*Assassin Recruits can sometimes be heard saying "Requiescat in pace" when they kill an enemy.
*When reaching the rank of Assassino, the recruit will acquire a sword that is identical to the swords used by the Masyaf guards in Assassin's Creed.
*If you try to follow an Apprentice, they will eventually get to Tiber Island and stop, though taking various confusing turns trying to disappear from the players screen.
*Unlike Ezio, Assassin apprentices can use their pistol at the same time as a heavy weapon (if equipped).

:For the multiplayer character in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, see Doctor.

Doctors are one of the new features in Assassin's Creed II. Found on the streets of every city in black robes and a mask with a beak-like shape, they can either refill Ezio's synchronization Bar for a fee, or sell him Medicine that can be carried and used later. They also sell him vials of poison for his Poison Blade.

Doctors are perhaps the most vital service in Assassin's Creed II, as they sell medicine that will heal you wherever your current location is.

Appearance and historical relation
The doctors in Assassins Creed II, as usual for those in their profession after one of the deadliest pandemics in human history (known as The Black Death), dress in a long black cloak covered with a coating of wax, and a very primitive beak-shaped plague mask, although some doctors do not wear the mask. In the mask, there is a crude filtration system to prevent any virus from entering their system while they perform their duties.

The Black Death plague peaked in Europe during the 14th century, and is said to have killed 30% to 60% percent of Europe's population. That reduced the world's population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in 1400.

The mask is also known as a Medico Della Peste, and was sometimes even worn in Venice's Carnevale.

Heal
Doctors will replenish all the user's health after being paid a paltry sum of 50 florins. The price from the Doctor in Monteriggioni for his healing services however, decreases as his stall becomes renovated.

Apothecary
Medicine
Doctors sell Medicine (75ƒ each), a healing item that can be carried with you anywhere you go. The number of Medicine vials the user can carry at one time increases when a lager Medicine Pouch is purchased from a Tailor. In game, the medicine itself is said to be smelling salts that act as painkillers. This is the only way to heal the user, other than an automatic healing at the start of most memories.

Poison
Doctors sell Poison vials for a sum of 175 florins. When Ezio asks Leonardo why Doctors would sell Poison, he replies that, "when given in high doses, that which cures can kill." Poison is available only after upgrading Ezio's Hidden Blade with the Poison Blade. The Poison is useful for players who do not want to assassinate a target quickly, or for those who would rather create a distraction. Poison is a potent weapon. It only offers one-use kills, but it is easily used on any target, and runs less of a risk of exposing the user.

Trivia
* Ezio can't harm doctors, but the first doctor encountered in the game (when with Federico), is the only one that can be attacked and killed, though only with blades, (sword, hidden blade, dagger, etc.). Doing so doesn't alert guards, doesn't cause or alert you of Desynchronization (due to Ezio killing civilians) and when killed, he rises again. A video of this 'bug' can be found on this link.
* Sometimes blacksmiths will also be able to restore some health when armor becomes damaged. Repairing the armor will replace some health.
* Not all doctors have a mask on their face. This could either be a glitch or intentional doing.
* In the novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, the doctor that Federico introduces to Ezio is their family doctor, Dottore Ceresa. Also, instead of having a small stand like other doctors in the game, he has his own store.
* More precisely the peculiar mask that the doctors carry was also called "Maschera Dello Speziale" (Speziale i.e someone who sells every kind of medicinal herbs). The mask was often filled with various herbs (the herbs were placed in the "nose" of the mask) because many doctors thought that this was a viable method to avoid to be infected by various diseases (mainly the Plague).
* You can hear doctors advertise their products, such as "fresh caught leeches."
Horses are a means of travel in Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Upon starting your first real assassination quest, the assassination of Tamir, you receive the option to travel across the Kingdom by horseback. Three horses wait outside the gates of Masyaf, and the player can choose to ride whichever horse they prefer.

All of the horses gallop the same speed, but they are all different colors. The horses waiting outside a city all keep the same color when passing through different regions, however, the non-purebred horses change color when passing through different regions. It's unclear why, but the speed and other stats of the horse remain the same when you pass through one region to the next, even if the color does not. Horses outside cities will always be black, white or ginger.

Controls
Assassin's Creed
To control a horse, walk up to it and the player should mount it automatically, if not, press the feet button. Use the feet button to blend when on a horse. While blending only Knights Templars will attack you, and Altaïr can pass regular guards without attracting attention. Pressing only the forward button will make the horse trot, holding the high profile button and forward will make the horse canter. Holding forward, high profile and feet button makes the horse speed up into a gallop. Pressing the attack button while standing still causes the horse to rear, startling nearby civilians. Pressing it while holding high profile draws Altaïr's sword, after which he can attempt to fight NPC's on horseback (feet button sheaths the sword). To jump, simply trot, canter or gallop up to an applicable object and the horse will jump, there is no need to press the feet button.

Assassin's Creed II
Horse gameplay stays exactly the same as in Assassin's Creed, besides the fact that the 'blend' feature is removed. Instead a new 'walk' feature is enabled, allowing the player to pass through crowds without knocking over any civilians.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, for the first time in any Assassin's Creed game, you can ride a horse inside the city and perform assassinations from horseback. Horseback combat mechanics have been improved, and Ezio will face mounted opponents. Ezio will also be able to use most weapons, both long and short ranged, while on horseback. Ezio can also assassinate Guards while they are on their horses and steal their mounts. Unlike the other games, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood will include many different types of horse, one of these being the heavily-armoured warhorse.

Moves
Some possible moves are:
* Jump forward off your horse into a haystack or acrobatic sequence
* Do a 180 degree turn while rearing
* Kick out at guards behind you
* Jump off your horse and attack someone with the hidden blade

Beware, if knocked off the horse, it may crush and instantly kill you. After dismounting in battle, the horse may potentially run away, forcing the player to find it again or mount another one. In Assassin's Creed and Assassin's Creed II, only the sword and Eagle Vision can be used while on a horse.

A horse will sometimes follow you if you dismount and are not fighting. Sometimes, if you jump off a horse and fight a group of guards nearby, the horse will rear and kick the guards, and causes them to stumble, though this isn't a fully reliable way to defeat the opponents.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze (born 1459) was a Florentine noble during the Italian Renaissance and, unbeknownst to most historians and philosophers, a central member, and later leader, of the Assassin's Order. A descendant of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the ancestor to both Desmond Miles and Subject 16, Ezio was unaware of his Assassin heritage until he was 17 years old, when, following the murder of his father and two brothers, Federico and Petruccio, Ezio fled from the Italian province of Florence - his hometown - and took refuge in the town of Monteriggioni in the Tuscan region at the Auditore Family Villa.

After being trained by his uncle Mario Auditore, Ezio proceeded on his quest for revenge against the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Rodrigo Borgia, who had ordered the executions of his father and two brothers. During his quest for revenge, Ezio managed to not only unite pages of Altaïr's Codex for the first time since Domenico Auditore, but also to save the cities of Florence, and Venice, and later Rome from the Templars' wrath, ensured the future travels of Christoffa Corombo to the "New World," and bring the Renaissance ideals and Assassin Order to the city of Rome.

Biography
Early life
Pre-Execution
Ezio Auditore da Firenze was born in Florence on June 24, 1459 AD, the second son of Giovanni and Maria Auditore. Until the age of 17, Ezio lived a life of luxury as a member of the Florentine noble class, unaware of his father's allegiance to the Assassin Order. As a youth he was an apprentice to Giovanni Tornabuoni, a great banker, presumably to learn the ropes of banking, so that he could become the leader of the Auditore bank.

In the year 1476, Ezio, his older brother Federico and friends of the family got into a fight with Vieri de' Pazzi and his gang. Ezio single-handedly defeated several members of the opposing gang, but Vieri managed to escape the scene before Ezio could do anything to him. During the fight, Ezio gained a cut on his lip, so Federico suggested that they visit the local doctor. After looting several people left unconscious from the fight, the two brothers ran across the rooftops to the Doctor.

After the doctor had tended to his wound, a church nearby caught the eye of the brothers, and Federico suggested a race. Ezio won and together the two looked out over the city. Realizing that they were nearby, Ezio travelled to the house of Cristina Vespucci and spent the night with her. Caught by Cristina's father the morning after, Ezio fled from a group of pursuing guards before meeting with his father at the Palazzo Auditore. Giovanni scolded him (but later softens, and admits that he is reminded of his own youth) and assigned him the task of delivering several letters to his contacts.

After returning home, Ezio found his distraught sister crying after discovering her boyfriend had been unfaithful. After obtaining his whereabouts, Ezio beat the man and warned him to stay away from his sister. Upon returning to the palazzo again, his little brother Petruccio asked Ezio to collect eagle feathers from the rooftops, as he was ill and couldn't leave the house or get out of bed. After a tiring search for feathers, Ezio's mother secured his services in picking up some paintings from a young artist that she patronized, Leonardo da Vinci. On the walk home, Leonardo struck up a conversation, beginning a friendship between the two young men that would last throughout their adult lives.

The Auditore Execution
After completing his errands, Ezio returned home to find the house ransacked, his father and brothers missing and his mother and sister hiding. Learning that city guards had been ordered to arrest Giovanni and all of his sons, Ezio made his way to the Palazzo della Signoria, where his father and brothers were being held. Climbing the building and speaking to his father through his cell window, Ezio was instructed to find a chest hidden in his office, take everything out of it, then deliver a sealed letter to Uberto Alberti, Lorenzo de' Medici's personal assistant and a close friend of the Auditore family. Doing so, Ezio found the Assassin robes that he would wear for the next 23 years and the letter containing details of a plot against the city of Florence and the Auditore family. Ezio brought the incriminating documents to Alberti and was assured that his family would be released the following day when the information was presented as evidence of their innocence.

The next day, Ezio returned to the Piazza della Signoria to find Alberti presiding over the execution of the Auditores (watched over all the while by a mysterious stranger who had been present with Alberti the previous night). Giovanni claimed his innocence, citing the information given to Alberti as evidence. But Alberti denied any knowledge of such information. Ezio's efforts to prevent the execution were ultimately in vain, and he could only watch helplessly as his father and brothers were hung. When he attempted to charge the scaffold to avenge his kinsmen, Alberti ordered the city guards to murder him. At the urging of one of Giovanni's friends, a thief, Ezio fled the Piazza della Signoria and sought shelter in a brothel, run by the sister of the Auditore housemaid, a courtesan named Paola.

Heritage
Exacting revenge
Paola, who unbeknownst to Ezio was an Assassin herself, agreed to assist Ezio in his quest for vengeance, teaching him how to survive in the city as an outlaw through pickpocketing and blending in crowds. She further directed Ezio to Leonardo da Vinci to repair the Hidden Blade of the late Giovanni Auditore, but did not notice that Ezio was being watched. At Leonardo's workshop, a guard banged on the door, ordered Leonardo outside, and tried to beat Ezio's location from him. Ezio realized something was wrong and crept up behind the guard, stabbing him from behind.

After Leonardo had thanked him, Ezio sought out and assassinated Alberti in the courtyard of the Basilica of Santa Croce, who was attending Verrochio's latest exhibit. After making his way inside the courtyard, he attacked Alberti in a frenzied rage, stabbing him multiple times in the chest, before proudly proclaiming the survival of the Auditore family through him to everyone present, marking Alberti as his first kill..

Family reunion
Now the most wanted man in Florence, Ezio fled the city with his mother and sister in the hopes of making their way to Spain, stopping beforehand at the Auditore family's villa in the town of Monteriggioni for shelter. During their travel to Monteriggioni, the three were accosted by Vieri de' Pazzi and his followers, but were saved by the timely arrival of Ezio's uncle, Mario, and his Mercenaries. Mario informed Ezio of the existence of the Assassins, in an obvious attempt to induct him into the Order, revealing that many of his ancestors, including Giovanni, were part of it. However, Ezio refused his ancestry, wishing only to continue his journey to Spain to ensure his mother and sister's safety. Enraged, Mario left Monteriggioni for the city of San Gimignano, where Vieri de' Pazzi had been located, in the attempt to relieve Monteriggioni of continual assaults by his minions. Guilt-ridden and knowing his presence was a primary reason for the ongoing attacks, Ezio traveled to San Gimignano to accept Mario's offer.

When Ezio arrived outside the city, he joined Mario and his mercenaries in their assault, waiting until nightfall to make their way to Vieri de' Pazzi by killing guards patrolling near the city gates. After witnessing a brief meeting between Rodrigo Borgia, Jacopo de' Pazzi, Francesco de' Pazzi and Vieri, Ezio made for his foe; while Mario and his mercenaries kept Vieri's thugs distracted, Ezio challenged and fought Vieri for the last time, eventually overpowering and killing him after a brief duel. Ezio tried to extract a confession from his old enemy, but to no avail as Vieri chose to be snide even to the very end. Infuriated by this, Ezio flew into a rage and insulted Vieri's corpse, continuing until his uncle calmed him down, and reminded him of a tradition of the Assassins: showing respect to those they have killed.

Business with the Pazzi
Following Vieri's death, Ezio returned to Florence in 1478 to gather information from La Volpe and prevent the planned Pazzi takeover, as well as the deaths of Lorenzo de' Medici and his brother Giuliano. Arriving too late to save Guilano, Ezio managed to prevent the death of Lorenzo, the ruler of Florence, and restored his family's good name. However, the Pazzi had already succeeded in their plan and brought the city into a state of civil war. After escorting Lorenzo to safety at his palazzo, Ezio learned from Lorenzo's lieutenant Poliziano the location of Francesco de' Pazzi at the Piazza della Signoria. As Pazzi and Medici troops battled in the streets below them, Ezio chased down and slew Francesco, although Jacopo de' Pazzi and several other conspirators were able to escape the city. Shortly afterwards, the Medici publicly cleared the name of the Auditore family and provided Ezio with the names of the conspirators who had escaped.

Learning that the Pazzi conspirators had fled to San Gimignano, Ezio tracked down and killed Antonio Maffei, Stefano da Bagnone, Bernardo di Bandino Baroncelli and Francesco Salviati, extracting from each man information on Jacopo de' Pazzi's hiding place. Using the information, Ezio located his quarry and tracked Jacopo to an ancient Roman theatre. Once there, Ezio eavesdropped on a meeting between Jacopo, Rodrigo Borgia and a Venetian merchant, Emilio Barbarigo. After fatally wounding Jacopo for his failure to capture Florence, Borgia revealed that he was aware of Ezio's presence. While Borgia and Emilio fled, Ezio was apprehended by Borgia's bodyguards, but he overpowered and killed them, before swiftly putting the dying Jacopo out of his misery.

Journey in Venice
With the Pazzi conspiracy ended, Ezio returned to Lorenzo in 1480 and declared his success. Before leaving the city for Venice, Ezio was granted a gift; a Medici cape, that would keep the city guards' attention from him. Ezio then made his way to Leonardo's workshop, only to find that he had just left for Venice himself. Meeting with Leonardo in the Appennine Mountains, Ezio accompanied him to the city of Forlì, narrowly avoiding the Templar soldiers sent after them by Rodrigo Borgia.

Eventually arriving in Forlì, one year later, the two made their way to the city docks, where Ezio was refused passage without a pass. It was at this moment that the two heard the screams of a noble lady stranded in the city's wetlands. Ezio swiftly hastened to her rescue and was able to row the woman ashore. The lady introduced herself as Caterina Sforza and coerced the dockman into granting Ezio passage to Venice. Once in Venice, Ezio and Leonardo were given a brief tour of the city by Alvise before Ezio began to seek a way into the Palazzo of Emilio Barbarigo, although this effort proved to be in vain. Suddenly pushed aside, Ezio watched as a gang of thieves attempted and failed to breach the Palazzo, leading Ezio to subsequently aid the thief Rosa, who had been shot through the leg with an arrow. After successfully escaping the city guards, Ezio was introduced to the leader of the Venetian thieves guild, Antonio, and together, they concocted a new plot to kill Emilio Barbarigo and liberate the merchant district.

The plot, taking place during 4 years, was successful and gave Ezio the name of another Templar conspirator – Carlo Grimaldi. A government official and member of the Council of Ten, Carlo was close to Giovanni Mocenigo, the Doge of Venice and hoped to turn him to the Templar cause. Overhearing another meeting between Borgia and Carlo, Ezio uncovered a plot to poison the Doge and replace him with Marco Barbarigo. Returning to Antonio, he sought to find a way into the Palazzo Ducale. The pair searched the front gates, the rear walls and even passing over the Basilica di San Marco; but they were hampered at every turn. Returning to the piazza below, an enraged Antonio remarked that only birds might get into the Doge's palace, reminding Ezio of Leonardo's flying machine, which he had seen on the way to Forlì. After a somewhat unsuccessful test flight, Leonardo came up with a way to ensure that Ezio reached his destination.

After removing the city guards at four separate locations, Antonio's thieves proceeded to light massive bonfires throughout the city, giving Ezio the lift Leonardo's flying machine needed to make it to the Palazzo Ducale. The plan worked, and Ezio breached the Palazzo Ducale, although he was too late to save the Doge. Carlo fled the scene, crying out that Ezio had assassinated the Doge, only to meet his own end at Ezio's hands moments later. However, Ezio was now the most wanted man in Venice and was forced to flee the city guards.

Returning to Leonardo's workshop for help in 1486, Ezio was directed to Sister Teodora's brothel, where Antonio was hiding. Under the cover of Carnevale, Ezio made his way to the brothel and began planning the death of Marco Barbarigo, competing in the four games of the Carnevale to win the golden mask that would gain him entrance to Marco's private party. Ezio was successful but found that Marco's cousin, Silvio Barbarigo and Marco's personal slave-bodyguard, Dante Moro intimidated and bribed the judges into denying him his prize. However, Ezio was successful in regaining the mask from Moro and managed to infiltrate the Doge's personal party and assassinate Marco with an ingenious new weapon, leaving the door open for Agostino, a Barbarigo not involved with the Templars, and an ally of Antonio's, to legitimately become Doge.

With his quest nearly at an end, Ezio tracked down Silvio Barbarigo and Dante Moro, who had occupied the Arsenal with an army of mercenaries. Needing a force of his own, Ezio was directed to find the mercenary leader, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, only to find Silvio's thugs had attacked Bartolomeo's headquarters and captured him and a number of his soldiers. Ezio swiftly located and liberated Bartolomeo and his soldiers; once he learned of Ezio's purpose, the mercenary captain was more than willing to assist in Silvio's destruction. Having tracked the Templars down to the city's Arsenal, Ezio managed to storm the building with the help of Bartolomeo and his men, and killed Dante Moro and Silvio Barbarigo in the ensuing battle. However, he was astonished to learn that the plot to remove the Doge was merely a distraction, so that the Templars could move their vessel to Cyprus, although the reasons for this were unknown to Ezio.

Induction into the Order
The Spaniard and the Apple
Two more years passed before word of the Templar vessel reached Ezio once again on his twenty seventh birthday, when Rosa brought him a shipping manifest detailing the return of the ship that very day. Sneaking into the Arsenal, Ezio watched as a Templar soldier carrying a Piece of Eden disembarked from the ship and made his way to a Templar base in the city. Following the soldier, Ezio assassinated and impersonated the guard, carrying the Piece of Eden to a meeting with Rodrigo Borgia himself. Finally able to confront the man ultimately responsible for the deaths of his father and brothers, Ezio criticized the Templar Grand Master for the non-appearance of the supposed "prophet" detailed in the Codex prophecy. Borgia responded, proudly naming himself the prophet before engaging Ezio in battle. The battle was short, and Ezio easily bested the Templar. On the backfoot, Borgia called upon the city guards and taunted the Assassin, saying that "his people" had failed to show up.

At this very moment Mario Auditore, Antonio, Paola, Teodora, La Volpe and Bartolomeo d'Alviano appeared, driving off Borgia and revealing themselves to Ezio as Assassins. With the arrival of Niccolò Machiavelli, it was revealed to Ezio that he was in fact the supposed "prophet", and that for the past decade they had all worked together to induct Ezio into the Assassins Order. That night, they all met again and Ezio was formally inducted into the Order.

Time in the Wetlands
Shortly after his induction, Ezio met with Mario and Niccolò, and travelled to Leonardo da Vinci's studio, hoping he could shed some light upon the strange artifact Borgia had dubbed "the Apple". Leonardo examined the unique device, commenting that the metal it was made of should not exist, and that its design was highly advanced despite its age. Briefly touching the Apple, Ezio accidentally activated the device, which started to glow and show strange holographic images. De-activating the device, Niccolò announced that he had arranged for the Piece of Eden to be held in the Rocca di Ravaldino, protected by an ally of the Assassin's, Caterina Sforza. Niccolò and Ezio met with Caterina in Romagna, just outside the city of Forlì. After briefly discussing the Apple, the three made their way back to the city, only to find that it had been invaded by the Orsi brothers; Checco and Ludovico.

As the group fought its way to the city's locked gates, Ezio managed to find another way inside and opened the gates, allowing them to continue their way to the Citadel. Reaching the Rocca di Ravaldino, they found out that two of Caterina’s children, Ottaviano and Bianca, were in the hands of the Orsi brothers, who had recently arrived and begun attacking the Citadel. Repelling the attack, Ezio left the Apple in Caterina's hands, before going to rescue her two children.

Making his way into Romagna, Ezio overpowered the guard detail assigned to imprison Bianca, who directed Ezio to her brother Ottaviano. As Bianca fled back to the city, Ezio made his way the the lighthouse upon which Ottaviano was being held by Ludovico himself. Climbing the tower, Ezio dispatched Ludovico and freed Ottaviano, though not before learning that the kidnapping was a distraction, which had allowed the brothers to steal the Apple. Ezio swiftly tracked down and killed Checco Orsi and his remaining men. Retrieving the Apple, Ezio failed to notice that Checco had stabbed him in the abdomen. Injured, Ezio collapsed to the floor, the Apple rolling from his hand. Before losing consciousness Ezio saw a monk with a missing finger pick up the Apple and walk away, despite Ezio's warnings against doing so.

Caterina’s guards later found Ezio next to Checco’s corpse and returned him to Forlì, where Caterina nursed him back to health. Returned to his senses, Ezio, now bearded, hurriedly explained to Caterina that the Apple had been stolen from him by a man in black. She recognized him for a monk and told Ezio to search for the monk at the church outside the city walls. There was no sign of the monk, but Ezio met with Brother O’Callahan, who told him to continue his search at San Vincenzo, in central Forlì. An abbot there identified Ezio as Stefano de Bagnone's killer and ran away, but was intercepted, and, once convinced he was not about to die, gave Ezio the name of the nine fingered monk: Girolamo Savonarola.

Journey in Spain
While trying to locate Savonarola, Ezio was told by a Thief to meet Antonio at the Thieves' Guild in Venice. Upon arriving there, Ezio found Antonio accompanied by another man, Luis Santangel. Luis was looking for a good "killer" who could oversee a meeting involving Luis' friend Christoffa Corombo, but Ezio expressed no interest. However, when he heard that Rodrigo Borgia was also involved in the meeting, he rushed to Christoffa's location, finding out that it was a trap. However, he managed to save Christoffa, who explained that Rodrigo was interested in his plans to sail west. Soon afterwards, Ezio met with Antonio again, who told him to go see both Luis and Christoffa in the gardens district.

They then told him that the Templars were in possession of Christoffa's atlas, which featured the journey's route. Ezio quickly recovered the atlas and brought it back to Christoffa and Luis. Luis informed Ezio of the presence of Spanish Assassins, who were held captive by the Spanish Inquisitor General, Tomas Torquemada. Thinking it his mission to rescue them, Ezio temporarily diverged from his goal to reclaim the Apple of Eden and set out to Spain, but not before Antonio gave him the names of two of his contacts.

After arriving in Spain and briefly losing his sword to a thief, Ezio went on to look for one of the contacts. When he arrived at the location, he met a man who called himself Raphael Sanchez and soon after revealed himself to be an Assassin. He informed Ezio of the location of the first captured Assassin, and Ezio rushed to save him. Right before the Assassin could be burned by the Inquisitors, Ezio killed all the guards and freed him. After Ezio's return, Raphael revealed that it was Gaspar Martinez who was ordered to capture the Assassins by Torquemada. Ezio located Gaspar and found him, Torquemada and a guard surrounding a captured Assassin.

Torquemada revealed to the captured Assassin, and indirectly to Ezio, that Rodrigo Borgia had ordered him to capture Assassins in Spain, because they were "non-believers" (in the Catholic religion). After the guard killed the Assassin, the group disbanded and Gaspar was left unguarded. Ezio then met with him and asked him what he knew of the Templars, but Gaspar feigned ignorance and said that they "went away two centuries ago." He fell silently to Ezio's blade, and Ezio acquired a list of six other Assassins' names.<br />
After freeing the first man on the list, Ezio took him back to Raphael, informing the latter of the existence of the list. However, all the remaining Assassins were located in Zaragoza.

Once in Zaragoza, Raphael told Ezio to find the Inquisition's Calficador, Pedro Llorente, whose tribunal met at the far side of town. Arriving there, Ezio found that Torquemada was also present. One of the Assassins was being tried, and after he refused to convert and confess, was killed. Ezio eavesdropped on the ensuing conversation and found out that Torquemada was under orders from Rodrigo Borgia to arrest the Assassins. He hurried to locate the remaining five Assassins. Four of them where held captive inside some catacombs. The last was held inside a church. After securing their safety, Ezio killed Pedro Llorente. Returning to Raphael, he requested to return to Italy. However, Raphael still needed some help against the Inquisitors in Granada. Ezio complied, helping to assassinate a Templar spy in the city and discovering along the way that Luis Santangel was also an Assassin.

Once again he excused himself to return to Italy, but disturbed again by the Templars. He is forced again to fight off the Templars to defend Luis, and informed that Raphael has been captured. Ezio fights to rescue Raphael, then finally infiltrate Torquemada's fortress. Torquemada escapes, but Ezio still have duties for the Piece of Eden and decide not to pursue him, Ezio excuses to finally return to Italy and Telling Luis and Raphael to tell him when Christoffa returns from his journey to find the "New World."
The Bonfire of the Vanities
After Lorenzo de’ Medici's death, Savonarola was able to easily take control over Florence with the Apple of Eden at his command. He taught the population of Florence that personal property and knowledge made the difference between the rich and the poor. Therefore, he burned everything related to the Renaissance in the Bonfire of the Vanities.

Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli wanted to put a stop to Savonarola's rule with the aid of their two comrades in the city, Paola and Volpe. Ezio began eliminating the monk's brainwashed followers while Niccolò, Paola, and Volpe organized a riot in the city. Soon after Ezio killed Savonarola's followers, the rioters formed an angry mob and went to the Palazzo Pitti, where Savonarola resided, demanding an end to the bonfires. Savanarola tried to use the Apple to quell the riot, but before he could, Ezio threw a knife at him, knocking the Apple out of his hand. In the ensuing chaos, the Apple was picked up by a guard in service to the Borgia (the Templars had also been trying, without success, to recover the Apple from Savonarola). Ezio followed him, killed him and recovered the Apple. Savonarola was then sentenced to be executed in the same way he had dealt with the city's knowledge: burned at the stake on the Piazza della Signoria. However, Ezio decided that no one should have to die in such agony.

The Assassin leapt onto the execution platform and put Savonarola out of his misery. He then looked at the stunned mob and gave a speech to them, urging them to follow their own path and rely on their own thoughts, not what they were told by the ones in power. He then left with Mario, Niccolò, Paola and La Volpe, ready to uncover the answers hidden within the Apple.
Dealing with the Borgia
Trip to the Vatican
The following year, in 1499, the Assassins came together once more at the Villa Auditore, with the Piece of Eden and the completed Codex in hand. Using the two objects, they discovered the location of the Vault to be in Rome, specifically, beneath the Vatican. Unfortunately, Rodrigo Borgia had become Pope in 1492, although Mario believed he had only done so to gain access to the Papal Staff, another of the Pieces of Eden. Undeterred, Ezio went to assassinate Rodrigo Borgia.

Fighting his way along the entire length of the Passetto di Borgo, Ezio snuck into the Sistine Chapel and struck at Borgia from above. As he was about to deal the killing blow, Borgia surprised him by using the Staff to blast him away and drain the energy of those in the room. Since Ezio held the Apple, he was immune to the Staff's effects, and the two engaged in a duel. Ezio repeated history by using the same technique Al Mualim utilized in his duel against Altaïr in 1191, by creating multiple illusions of himself with the Apple. Ezio seemingly bested Borgia, but the Pope overcame him. Borgia took the Apple, stabbed Ezio in the abdomen and left him to die before fleeing into the Vault. Outside the Vault, Ezio watched as Borgia tried in vain to open it. Laying down his arms, Ezio challenged and defeated Borgia in a fist fight, obtaining possession of both the Apple and the Staff, but refusing to take Borgia’s life, having realized the futility of revenge.
Entering the Vault, Ezio stood in shock as he was confronted by a hologram of an individual naming herself "Minerva" and claiming to be one of "Those Who Came Before". Ezio was further confounded when the hologram sought to speak to an unseen figure named Desmond, before disappearing abruptly, leaving Ezio with many unanswered questions.

Following his experience in the Vault, Ezio returned to Monteriggioni. However he soon learned that the Templar threat had diminished little when Cesare Borgia, the son of Rodrigo and a high ranked Templar laid siege to Monteriggioni. His army of soldiers, towers and cannons breached the city's gates and destroyed much of the city and Villa. Ezio, who was sleeping with Caterina Sforza at the time of the attack, was shocked when a cannonball shot through his wall and hit the centre pillar of his room. He quickly got dressed and met with Mario to discuss their options. Mario tasked Ezio with keeping the Templars from the city walls, whilst Mario himself led the evacuation of the city .

Ezio made his way to the city walls, and using the cannons, destroyed several of Cesare’s siege engines. Eventually however, the Templars breached the city gates, and entered, bringing a mortally wounded Mario Auditore and a captured Caterina Sforza with them. Seeing his uncle mortally wounded and lying on the ground, Ezio ran on the rooftops trying to reach Mario before Cesare could kill him. Standing at the city gates, the Apple of Eden in his hand, Cesare 'invited' Ezio to come to Rome with a shot of his firearm; the shot killed Mario. The Apple in hand, Cesare returned to Rome whilst Ezio, who had been shot by a Borgia harquebusiers atop the city walls, blacked out and fell off the building he was observing the situation from .

Upon regaining consciousness, Ezio travelled to Rome to avenge Mario's murder at the hands of Cesare.

War in Rome
In 1499, with no headquarters, and the assassins in disarray, Ezio arrived in Rome, where he found the city in ruins and disrepair under the Borgia. Basing himself on Tiber Island, in the centre of the city, Ezio rebuilt the complex, and began his mission to rid the city of Cesare and his father.
Ezio was raised as a young Florentine nobleman, living during the 15th and 16th Century. Unlike his ancestor Altaïr, he was brought up without knowing of the Assassins' existence, or of his heritage. A seducer of women and a playful man, Ezio possessed acrobatic skills far beyond those of his peers, save for his brother. He came from an affluent background and had many friends until the deaths of his father and brothers drove him out of Florence. Forced to protect his mother and sister, Ezio became an Assassin, exacting revenge on the conspirators who had betrayed his family and plotted to seize both Florence and Venice.
An explorer, throughout his quests, Ezio scoured the cities he visited in search of Codex pages and seals from the six assassins tombs spread across northern Italy. The Codex pages allowed Leonardo di Vinci to upgrade his weaponry, including the addition of a wheel lock firearm and poison needle concealed beneath his left hidden blade.

By collecting the six tomb seals, Ezio gained access to the armor created by his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad which may have later been lost during the Siege of Monteriggioni. He also collected capes that helped him stay incognito. The only exception to this was the cape bearing the Auditore family crest, which made him easily recognizable, due to his family's history.

In 1503, when Ezio started the Brotherhood of Assassins, he wore a uniform that resembled a combination of his own when he just started to become an assassin and Altaïr's uniform as an assassin. The robes coming with Altaïr's armor were black, while this one was the usual Assassin white. It was also longer in comparison to his old outfit. It still bore the Assassin seal on his belt, with a white cape hanging from the left side of his shoulder.

Romantic life
Ezio was known for his good looks, flirtatious nature and predisposition for womanizing. Despite the latter part of his life being centered around his hunt for Rodrigo Borgia, Ezio still managed to find the time to share multiple romantic relationships with a number of different women.

By 1476, Ezio had had many encounters with various unnamed Florentine girls and courtesans before the execution of his family; insulting Vieri de' Pazzi by suggesting that his sister seemed "quite satisfied with the handling he gave her earlier." That year, Ezio was in a permanent relationship of sorts with Cristina Vespucci, against the wishes of her father. Following his street brawl with Vieri de' Pazzi on the Ponte Vecchio, Ezio visited Cristina during the night, despite his brother's request otherwise; he was chased out by her father the next morning, and subsequently had to flee the city guards. Two years later, when Ezio returned to Florence, Cristina was married to one of her suitors, Manfredo d'Arzenta, though she admitted to still loving Ezio. Ten years later, when Cristina and Manfredo travelled to Venice for carnevale, Ezio, posing as her husband, wrote to her asking her to come to the Rio Terra degli Ogniscanti; Cristina complied. As both wore carnevale masks, she did not recognise him until he kissed her. She then took off his mask and asked him how he dared kiss her like that, telling him she never wanted to see him again. When Ezio tried to understand, she explained that if he really loved her, he wouldn't simply have let Manfredo marry her. Ezio was deeply hurt upon learning of Cristina's death at the hands of Girolamo Savonarola's men, during the Bonfire of the Vanities.

Before meeting with Cristina during Carnevale, whilst trying to find a way to Venice, Ezio accompanied his friend, Leonardo da Vinci, to Forlì. He was initially refused passage aboard the ship to Venice, but his fortunes changed after encountering Caterina Sforza, who had become stranded on a small island with no means of escape. Ezio rescued her, and she repaid the favor by granting him passage to Venice. She also told him that the next time he returned to Forli, it would "be her pleasure" to entertain him. Moments later, after Ezio revealed to his close friend that Sforza was a future conquest and his type of woman, Leonardo informed Ezio of the ladies' identity, and that she was married to the Count of the city.

Also, at some point during his time in Forlì, Ezio encountered a girl named Amelia. During this encounter, Amelia and two of her friends were discussing whether anyone could beat their record in a horseback riding race. Ezio took on the challenge, in return for an intimate encounter with Amelia should he prove successful.

When Ezio arrived in Venice for the first time, an unknown young woman unsuccessfully attempted to pickpocket him. Later the same day, Ezio witnessed the woman and a group of thieves attempting to scale the Palazzo della Seta. The attempt ended in failure, and the girl was shot in the leg by an archer. Ezio intervened, defending her from Emilio Barbarigo's thugs. Upon helping her to get to safety, he learned that her name was Rosa, and that she was a member of the city's Thieves Guild. At first, Rosa's attitude towards Ezio was very aggressive and unfriendly, but after he saved her, she became much more amiable.

While trying to acquire the Golden Mask, Ezio was seen flirting with many of Sister Teodora's Courtesans. After the Carnevale challenges, when Ezio goes up to accept the Golden Mask as his prize for victory, he was accompanied by a Courtesan. After assassinating Marco Barbarigo and seeking sanctuary in the brothel, Ezio was known to have flirted with Sister Teodora, who invited several of her girls to "comfort" Ezio.

In 1499, Ezio was seen sleeping with Caterina Sforza in the Villa Auditore before it was besieged by Cesare Borgia and his army.

Trivia
*Ezio is 40 years old in 1499 (15 years older than Altaïr was in 1191); the same age as his father, Giovanni Auditore, when he was executed in 1476.
*Ezio is, thus far, the only character whose physical appearance undergoes observable changes over the 23-year period of the game. Others (like Altaïr and Desmond) mostly stay the same.
**With the camera at a certain angle, the evidence of Ezio's aging becomes apparent. By the time he turns 40, he grows a beard and develops wrinkles in his forehead. His voice also matures over time, making him sound calmer and talk more slowly. He also loses his tan, which is likely due to him hiding in the shadows for the majority of his life.
** However, by the time of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood other characters, such as Mario Auditore and Leonardo da Vinci have shown signs of aging.
*Just like Altaïr and Desmond, Ezio has a scar on his mouth. It was acquired after the mission "Boys Will Be Boys" during Sequence 1, when Vieri de' Pazzi throws a rock at his face.
*The Animus database only details his life before he became an Assassin, holding no information on his life within the Order.
*Both Ezio and Altaïr have similar name meanings and origins. Altaïr means "the flying one," while Ezio means "eagle." Altaïr also comes from the name of the brightest star in the constellation Aquila (which also translates to "eagle").
*Ezio's robes in Brotherhood more closely resembles Altaïr's in color and design. At this point, the bracers of his father's hidden blade have also been replaced.
*Ezio's outfit can be unlocked in Prince Of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, via Uplay for 30 points.
*A Sackboy version of Ezio's outfit can be purchased for LittleBigPlanet via the PlayStation Store.
*In Playstation Home Ezio's Assassin robe from Assassin's Creed II was a limited edition outfit and could be bought but it is now currently unavailable.
*In the first memory of The Bonfire of Vanities(Sequence 13), a group of women can be heard talking about an Assassin (Ezio), on the bridge where Machiavelli is waiting, and reveal that the stories of Ezio's assassinations in Firenze reached a mythic status.
*Ezio has been seriously injured in battle three times. The first is when Checco Orsi stabbed Ezio in the right side of his lower abdomen during the small cutscene. The second is when Rodrigo Borgia stabbed Ezio in the left side of his lower abdomen. The third is when Ezio was shot in the left shoulder at the siege of Monteriggioni by arquebruisers.
*Ezio's title was slightly misspelled in Assassin's Creed II: Discovery. In the game, his biography lists him as "Ezio Auditore de Firenze" instead of "Ezio Auditore da Firenze".
The Palazzo Ducale, or Doge's Palace, was a large, palace adjoining the Basilica di San Marco, in Venice.

Built to protect the Doge, the ruler, of Venice; the Palazzo Ducale was an imposing structure with high, unscalable walls and a guarded main entrance. The palace not only housed the Doge, but also served as a prison of sorts, as they rarely left the building's walls.

In 1485, a Templar plot to gain the allegiance of the Doge of Venice &ndash; Giovanni Mocenigo &ndash; had turned to one of assassination, with Carlo Grimaldi chosen to poison him within the Doge's own chambers. The Assassins utilized Leonardo da Vinci's Flying Machine in order to get into the Palazzo, since the Palazzo is impenetrable.

Following the death of Giovanni and his successor, Marco Barbarigo, Agostino Barbarigo became Doge, and continue to utilise the Palazzo Ducale as his personal residence.

Trivia
*Like the Palazzo Medici, the Palazzo Ducale is designed to be impenetrable, the only way to get in is during the mission to assassinate Carlo Grimaldi, where you can get in with the Flying Machine invented by Leonardo da Vinci.
View Points are any structure high enough for it to be possible to observe the surrounding terrain. They range from church towers and mansions' roof beams in the cities, to watchtowers and guardposts on the roads.

Assassin's Creed
In the first game, view points were found in all the cities (Damascus, Jerusalem and Acre) and in the Kingdom, excluding Masyaf. Each map contained 10 to 12 view points located on the highest buildings; such as a cross on top of a Catholic Cathedral, or the top of a lighthouse in the port-city of Acre, or a palace guard tower in the city of Damascus. Aside from by the height of those constructions, they could be located by watching the birds that nest there. Climbing atop one of the structures provided the means to activate (or Synchronize) the View Point, using the Head Button.

Those view points allowed Altaïr to observe the layout of the terrain around him and watch the movement of its people. After the first view point in a map was "activated," it revealed the location of the remaining points and missions within a certain radius.

Some viewpoints had archers defending the position, or guards set around and below it. They could either fire arrows or throw rocks to prevent a climber from reaching the top. All the view points had carts or piles of hay on the ground at the very bottom, providing perfect and spectacular locations for the performance of an incredible-but-potentially-fatal Leap of Faith.
Achievement
On the Xbox 360 version you can get an achievement by synchronizing with all View Points.

Assassin's Creed IIs view points function much the same and are located on famous land marks in Italy. Ezio will not only be able to dive into carts and stacks of hay such as in the first game, but also into carts of flower petals, leaves and bodies of water. There are seventy-three View Points in the game (including the DLC's) and you get an achievement/trophy ("I like the view") by synchronizing with ten View Points. You can also get the achievement "High Dive" where you perform a leap of faith on top of Giotto's Campanile in Florence.

Note that one's map will remain devoid of structures until the player has ascended to the View Point in the area and synchronized with it.
*In the achievements for Assassin's Creed, the "Fearless" achievement refers to View Points as "Reach High Points".
The Pieces of Eden were technologically advanced pieces of equipment created by the First Civilization; each possessed unique properties, and all were known to be capable of bending the thoughts of one or more individuals to the will of the user.
Those Who Came Before, also known as the First Civilization, were an ancient yet advanced race of beings that lived on Earth long before humanity. The creators of the Human race, the First Civilization used the Pieces of Eden to control their slaves through hypnotic trances. Whether humanity was created to be susceptible to the effects of the Pieces of Eden, or if the Pieces were created after humanity remains unknown; Minerva attributed the peace between humanity and their "gods" to the effects of the Pieces of Eden.

Eventually however, two humans, Adam and Eve became immune to the hypnotic effects of the Pieces of Eden, and stole one of the Pieces &ndash; the Apple of Eden &ndash; from their masters. Soon after a war broke out, pitting humanity against their gods. Despite their strength in technology, the Pieces of Eden failed to protect the creators from the slaves, who heavily outnumbered the masters. The war ended catastrophically for both sides, and both humanity and their gods were forced to work together to rebuild their world. Eventually though, the gods became extinct, and their Pieces of Eden were lost to the annals of history.

Over the centuries, the Pieces of Eden resurfaced; seen as religious artifacts or holy relics, foremost among which being the Apple of Eden. However, as time continued, so groups of individuals began to see the Pieces of Eden for what they truly were, advanced technologies to be exploited. As early as the 12th Century, the Knights Templar were actively seeking and obtaining numerous Pieces of Eden, in the hopes of uniting the world in peace much like Those Who Came Before had done, and in 1191, they sought the Apple itself.
Unfortunately for them, Al Mualim, leader of the Order of Assassins and secretly also, a Knights Templar, had sent his best to capture the device. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the brothers A-Sayf intercepted the Templars, and despite the death of Kadar and Altaïr being thrown from the battle early on, the Assassins prevailed and spirited the Apple to their fortress in Masyaf. For a year the Assassins and Knights Templar fought one another for control of the artifact, until finally the deaths of both Robert de Sable and Al Mualim at the hands of Altaïr ended the conflict. Originally intending to destroy the Apple, Altaïr found himself unable to do so, and instead decided to seal the Apple in the Limassol Archives after he had liberated it from the Templars; circumstances worked against this however, and he decided to keep the Apple himself, lest it fall into the wrong hands. Ultimately, the Apple did find it's way to Cyprus, where it was buried away until it's discovery and exhumation by the Knights Templar in 1487.

Centuries later, whilst hacking into the Animus, the mysterious Subject 16, discovered that throughout history, the Pieces of Eden had had an extensive history of changing hands, with many historically notable figures, many Templars or Assassins, laying claim to them; Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Gandhi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill and even Adolf Hitler to name but a few. By 2012 however, many had fallen into the hands of the Knights Templar; seeking to obtain the rest, the Animus project was set up with the intention of mapping the location of, and securing the remaining Pieces of Eden.

This Animus project was also an important component in the Knights Templar goal of ensuring world peace, through use of the Pieces of Eden. By using the Pieces of Eden known as "the Apples", the Templars sought to manipulate the neuro-transmitters in the entire human race to achieve their goal. Eye-Abstergo, a branch of Abstergo Industries, planned to launch an "all-in-one telecommunication" satellite into orbit of the Earth; unbeknown to humanity and indeed, many employees of Abstergo Industries, the satellite would contain at least one Apple, and spread it's power out on a global scale.

Characteristics
Abilities
Amongst the greatest tools known to man; by interacting with a neuro-transmitter located deep in the brain of the human body, the Apples of Eden could control the human mind. Other Pieces of Eden were capable of warping reality, creating illusions and ensuring total obedience; both the Knights Templar and the Order of Assassins believed that the Pieces of Eden were the sources of many historical tales and miracles, such as the Parting of the Red Sea, the Trojan Horse, and the miracles enacted by "the Christ-figure" who foreshadowed the Christian faith, and the Biblical plagues that ravaged Egypt, among other supernatural happenings. Some were known to interact with and change the passage of time, possibly creating paradoxes, while at least one provided an impenetrable barrier, that would protect the wearer from any attempt at penetration.

Following the destruction of the second Piece of Eden during experimental use at Denver International Airport, the Knights Templar found themselves in need of another artifact with similar properties. Needing access to a map that indicated the location of all Pieces of Eden, the Templar front company Abstergo Industries kidnapped the descendant of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad &ndash; Desmond Miles &ndash; in order to view the memories of his ancestor. This would allow them to view the very same map Altaïr had viewed in 1191.

Each of the Pieces of Eden contained a great deal of energy stored within, and the destruction of one would cause an explosion on the same scale of a nuclear blast. One such blast occurred in 1908, in the region of Tunguska, Russia, when the Piece of Eden known as "the Staff" was seemingly destroyed by Nikola Tesla as a strike against the Knights Templar.

Resistance
Although the First Civilization created humanity with a neuro-transmitter that forced them to accept the will of the Pieces of Eden, eventual cross-breeding between the gods and their slaves bore a hybrid species. These new humans passed some of the natural abilities of their gods, but most notably, were free of the neuro-transmitter that bound them to the will of the Pieces of Eden. The first two known individuals to be born immune to the effects of the Pieces were Adam and Eve, who later stole the Apple of Eden and precipitated the war that followed. Members of the lineage also inherited these natural abilities and immunity to the mind-control of the Pieces, although the Pieces' ability to physically control them remained. Individuals such as Altaïr and his descendants Ezio Auditore, Subject 16 and Desmond Miles all possessed these enhanced abilities, and presumably, an immunity to the Pieces of Eden.

By the early 21st Century, the Knights Templar were aware of both the existence of Those Who Came Before and the fact that some humans were immune to the mind control of the Apples of Eden, and as such actively sought other devices to compensate for this. On at least one occasion Dr. Warren Vidic, an employee of Abstergo Industries, recieved an email from an unknown individual who had not been affected by the powers of the Apple, and threatened to expose what he had seen.

Confirmed Pieces of Eden
Besides the Apples of Eden, the First Civilization created many more Pieces of Eden. Some of these affected humanity in similar ways, whilst others affected nature and even time itself. The first, second, third, fourth and fifth Apples' were all capable of control the minds of men, creating illusions and, to a degree, permit physical control over said minds; the Apples could all be used in conjunction with the Staff of Eden, which increased the abilities of both Pieces. Other Pieces included the Shroud, which would become famous to modern day humans as the "Shroud of Turin" &ndash; that which covered the body of Jesus Christ; it's properties including the ability to heal the wounds of those it touched; and the the Sword, a Piece which greatly increased the military prowess and battle skill of its wielders, that would pass through the hands of many great rulers through the centuries, including King Arthur, Alexander the Great, and Genghis Khan.

According to e-mails read by Desmond Miles, at least one Piece of Eden existed that granted the ability to manipulate time. Concerns over possible paradoxes however, lead to Abstergo Industries locking it away.

Known locations of Pieces of Eden
Following the death of Al Mualim and the Apples projection of a map indicating the location of all Pieces of Eden, Altaïr copied the map and included it in his Codex, hidden away so that only one of his bloodline might see it. Based off of the locations given on the Codex map, the following locations can be identified as containing a Piece of Eden;

Trivia
*According to the glyphs and Truth files, many legends and myths throughout human history are actually historically accurate. The supernatural or paranormal parts of each can be explained by the protagonist in each having acquired his or her own Piece of Eden (i.e.: the Greek myth of Perseus, King Arthur, etc).
*In Assassin's Creed II, during the battle against Borgia in the&nbsp;Sistine Chapel, Ezio creates copies of himself, much like Al Mualim did against Altaïr. If Ezio is customized, his copies will appear with different sets of armor and colors whereas when if he is not customized, each copy will be perfectly identical to the real Ezio, besides his weapon.
*Both the Codex map, and the Map projection at the end of Assassin's Creed show that there are only fifty Pieces of Eden at a time, but Subject 16 says the Shroud is Piece of Eden 'number 66'. This discrepancy has yet to be rectified.
**In the French and German version of Assassin's Creed II, the Shroud is referred to as number 36, not 66. Whether this is a mistake in the translation or not, remains to be clarified.

imageneed
A Rafik (or Rafiq) is a graduated scholar of the Assassins in the second tier of the caste system (the Assassins being on top). Within the game, they provide information on where to acquire knowledge about targets and determine whether or not Altaïr is well-educated enough to perform an assassination. They are usually located in a Assassin's Bureau, other Dai's and Rafiq's can be found in Masyaf, though these Dai's and Rafiq's do not help you.

Role
In one of his conversations with Malik at the Assassin's Bureau in Jerusalem, Altaïr addresses Malik as "dai" (during the Majd Addin assignment). The dais are the direct representatives of the Imam, who is the exalted spiritual leader of the people. This means that Malik was made a dai after he pulled off the task that Altaïr failed to accomplish in the beginning. In the beginning of the story in the cut-out scene under the Temple, Altaïr states that he is of a higher rank than Malik. Altaïr is a Master Assassin and a field instructor, which means that Malik is not yet a dai. While devising a plan on how to approach Al Mualim, Malik refers to Altaïr as dai (Al Mualim assassination) showing that he obtained the rank once giving the Piece of Eden to Al Mualim .

The Bureau leaders in Acre and Damascus are rafiqs. That is not their name but their rank. A rafiq is a first level instructor just beneath a dai. Initially they are teachers and field contacts that provided Altaïr with where and when to best strike. But after Altaïr's major failure, Al Mualim places him under the entire Assassin's Order. This results in rafiqs obtaining authoritative power over Altaïr. Rafiqs are then authorized to grant or deny the carrying out of a Assassination Contract, if Altaïr does not posses what they feel is enough information on the target. Once Altaïr has properly learned where and when the target will be, he is granted permission to perform the strike, but only after receiving the assassination feather marker. Rafiqs are also responsible for documenting information about the assassinations success, but also the information that the informers stationed around the cities have obtained. The
informers seem to be under the authority of the rafiqs and answer to them. This is noted in how rafiqs seem to always have knowledge of the targets occupation and the area most occupied by them. But because rafiqs can't leave the bureau, informers gather information in the field and report back. With this information rafiqs direct Altair in the directions of where best to begin his search.
Each of them has a particular skill or talent which he may teach in addition to teaching philosophy, the Quran, and The Creed. Malik is a cartographer, or map maker. One of the rafiqs is a potter (Damascus) and the other is a scholar/scribe (Acre). Their given names are never said. They are only called rafiq as a title of respect.

The higher level teachers (Instructors) at Masyaf (Al Mualim's Library) are those who wear the white robes with a black djellaba and red decorative markings. They more than likely are the teachers who provide in depth education on philosophy and the politics of the world. Providing such knowledge educates and moulds out to the assassin students how and why it is that a single assassination strike could change the land and affect history. Instructors probably help assassins better understand why their work is so important in maintaining peace. Al Mualim also wears this attire except his is all black, marking him as Master of the Assassins Order.

Appearances
Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles
Altaïr encounters a Rafiq during his visit to Damascus. He is an old, nasty man and first challenges Altaïr in order to determine if he is enough trained. In his adventures, Altaïr also meets other Rafiqs (like Hamid) as well.

Assassin's Creed
There are three Rafiqs in three different cities (Damascus, Acre, Jerusalem). The Rafiq of Jerusalem is Malik, while the other two were not given any names.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
Rafiqs do not really appear in the game, instead key Resistance members such as Alexander and Markos act similarly to Rafiqs and are situated in Resistance Safe Houses, not Assassin Bureaus.
The
A Rafik (or Rafiq) is a graduated scholar of the Assassins in the second tier of the caste system (the Assassins being on top).

Rafiqs do not really appear in the game, instead key Resistance members such as Alexander act similarly to Rafiqs and are situated in Safe Houses, not Assassin Bureaus.
