'''Firearms''' are a class of long-ranged [[weapons]] that launch projectiles at a high velocity through the confined burning of propellants. They were used as early as the late Middle Ages.

==History==
===Middle Ages===
{{Quote|The knowledge of projectile combat is not new to us, having been observed amongst our Eastern neighbors. But their weapons were much larger – and insufficient for our needs.|[[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's Codex]], page 28.|Assassin's Creed II}}
[[File:Mentor's return 11.png|thumb|left|250px|Altaïr aiming the Hidden Gun at Abbas Sofian]]
Though he knew of firearms being used in ancient [[China]], the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] took little interest in them, realizing that the weapons were of no use to his Order in their current size.

As such, upon obtaining the [[Apple of Eden 2|Apple of Eden]], he successfully utilized the knowledge it held to condense the design, ''"embedding their fiery weapon into a form that can be worn on the wrist."''

Along with the formulation of a combustible powder that could be made from common ingredients, Altaïr kept the schematics for the [[Hidden Gun]] a secret, available to only the Brotherhood's most trusted allies. Sometime afterwards, he recorded all details of these in [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad's Codex|his personal journal]].<ref name="AC2">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]''</ref>

===Renaissance===
In [[Italy]] during the [[Renaissance]], another Assassin, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], came into possession of Altaïr's Codex and showed the pages to [[Leonardo da Vinci]]. Leonardo deciphered the instructions, and as a result was able to construct the Hidden Gun for Ezio's use.<ref name="AC2" />

[[File:Vilified 11 v.png|thumb|250px|Papal arquebusiers]]
Though firearms were uncommon until the early 16th century, after [[Cesare Borgia]] forcibly recruited Leonardo into his employ around 1499, the engineer was made to design a wheel-lock firearm for use by the [[House of Borgia|Borgia]] armies.<ref name="ACB">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

Cesare's ally, the [[France|French]] baron [[Octavian de Valois]], received a personalized, golden wheel-lock firearm from Leonardo, and kept it with him at all times. During the [[Siege of Monteriggioni|Fall of Monteriggioni]], Cesare used this pistol to kill [[Mario Auditore]].<ref name="ACB" />

A variety of firearms began to circulate among common [[guards]] as well, with [[arquebusiers]] wielding long muskets or arquebuses, and with several [[horsemen]] and [[Papal Guard]]s using shorter pistols.<ref name="ACB" />

[[File:ACR Ottoman Rifleman.png|thumb|left|250px|Ezio facing an Ottoman rifleman]]
During Ezio's travels to [[Constantinople]], he encountered [[Ottoman Empire|Turkish]] soldiers using Ottoman flintlock muskets, as well as [[Janissaries]] who used short pistols. The Assassins of the [[Turkish Assassins|local guild]] also made use of firearms to guard [[Assassin Dens|nearby dens]], ranging from simple muskets to [[cannons]].<ref name="ACR">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

Meanwhile, the [[Byzantine Empire|Byzantines]] forces had designed an early version of a flamethrower, which they used to deliver [[Greek Fire]].<ref name="ACR" /> They also had a form of a machine gun, which was similar in construct to Leonardo da Vinci's [[War Machines|prototype]].<ref name="ACB" /> Both of these were then later adapted by the Assassins, in order to aid them in [[Den Defense|defending their dens]].<ref name="ACR" />

===Age of Discovery===
After the discovery of the Americas and European powers entered an age of colonialization, firearms became much more common. By the early 1700s, muskets with [[bayonets]] had become standard equipment for armies and navies, while high-ranking soldiers like [[officers]] and [[Jägers]] wielded flintlock pistols.<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

As it still took time to reload and clean firearms, [[Piracy|pirates]] were usually accustomed to carrying multiple pistols at any one time.<ref name="AC4" />

===Age of Revolution===
[[File:AC3 Musket soldiers.png|thumb|250px|Connor facing a group of soldiers wielding muskets]]
By the 1760s, the [[France|French]]-[[Africa]]n Assassin [[Aveline de Grandpré]] was able to wield muskets, as well as two Queen Anne pistols. Similar to the flintlock pistols, these were single shot weapons and took time to reload.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed III: Liberation]]''</ref>

<nowiki> </nowiki>The [[Templar]] [[Shay Patrick Cormac]] used a modified gun called an air rifle which he used to fire distractionary bullets and grenades during the [[French and Indian War|Seven Year's War]].

The [[Colonial Assassins|Colonial Assassin]] [[Ratonhnhaké:ton|Connor]] was able to wield a musket as well as two flintlock pistols. By the [[American Revolutionary War]], some pistols were advanced enough to carry two shots at a time.<ref name="AC3">''[[Assassin's Creed III]]''</ref>

During the [[French Revolution|Revolution]] in [[France]], Assassins such as [[Arno Dorian]] wielded multi-barreled flintlock pistols.<ref name="ACU">''[[Assassin's Creed: Unity]]''</ref>

===Modern times===
[[File:Fall-Orelovrifle.png|thumb|250px|left|Nikolai with his rifle]]
During the late 19th and early 20th century, in the [[Russian Revolution]], the [[Russia]]n [[Russian Assassins|Assassin]] [[Nikolai Orelov]] wielded a modern bolt-action {{Wiki|Berdan rifle}}, alongside the usual weaponry of his time.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: The Fall]]''</ref>

In 2012, Assassins continued to wield firearms in combat, and once used them on a direct assault on [[Abstergo Industries]], in an attempt to rescue [[Desmond Miles]].

Though Desmond overheard exchanged gunshots through the [[Animus Project laboratory|facility]]'s intercom, Dr. [[Warren Vidic]] eventually told him that the rescue attempt had failed, and that most of the team had been killed.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed]]''</ref> Firearms were, at this point, standard equipment for Abstergo guards in the [[Rome]] facility.<ref name="AC3" />

[[File:AC3 Desmond Cross Lab.png|thumb|250px|Daniel Cross aiming a customized pistol at Desmond Miles]]
Once during a night-time infiltration of a Manhattan office building, Desmond Miles came across a power source for the [[Grand Temple]] and aimed to retrieve it from its case. Despite his obtainment of the cube, [[Daniel Cross]] surprised and threatened Desmond with a pistol; undeterred, Desmond clobbered Cross to unconsciousness with the power source and left. Subsequently, when Desmond searched for the second source at a mixed martial arts tournament in Brazil, Cross killed its owner and proceeded to shoot after Desmond, with Abstergo guards also doing so. However, this did not prevent Desmond from fighting Cross and taking the second power source.

In December of that year, once Desmond had assassinated Cross at Abstergo's Rome facility in his attempts to rescue his [[William Miles|father]], Warren Vidic authorized guards to use deadly force on contact with Desmond. However, he took Cross' pistol – an {{Wiki|Heckler & Koch Mark 23|MK23}} – and could use it in the latter half of his assault, which worked similarly to his ancestor Connor's flintlocks, only that it had a much larger magazine, a higher rate of fire, and had a suppressor attached.<ref name="AC3" />
The '''Toba catastrophe''' was an event during human prehistory, dated to 75000 BCE,<ref name="ACI">''[[Assassin's Creed: Initiates]]''</ref> which saw the near total extinction of both [[Humans|humanity]] and the [[First Civilization]], who were involved in a [[Human-First Civilization War|military conflict]] at the time.

In modern times, the disaster was often misconceived to have been the eruption of a super-volcano, but was in actuality caused by a {{Wiki|coronal mass ejection}}.

==Pre-catastrophe==
Embroiled in their war with humanity, the [[First Civilization]] did not foresee the coming apocalypse until it was too late.<ref name="AC2">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]''</ref> Despite this, certain members of the First Civilization worked to find a means of suppressing it – or at least protect future generations from the predicted repeat – by researching ways of preventing the cataclysm within underground [[Temples|Vaults]].

As stated by [[Jupiter]], the First Civilization tried six different methods that showed the most potential, but none of them worked.<ref name="Revelations">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref> When [[Desmond Miles]] and the other modern-day Assassins entered the Grand Temple, Juno appeared to tell Desmond of the six trials they took to prevent the disaster.

The first solution was to build four towers to collect the solar flare that would strike the planet and virtually dispel it. While they had the means and resources, the time taken would have been too long. The first tower was never completed and the research went on. However Juno stated that even after when the project was abandoned, the process that involved building the towers became automated and a few continued to build the first tower before the solar flares hit the Earth.

The second solution was to enhance metallic rings known as [[Shards of Eden]] that emitted a forcefield around them which repelled metal such as bullets. The concept was to use the principle behind the technology to create a magnetic forcefield around the Earth, but the project proved too large to build and would be impossible. Still determined, the First Civilization tried saving portions by doing so on a reduced capacity – they hoped to save half, a sixth, an eighth, or even a tenth of the world, but even building the Shard for one city would be too costly, and so the solution was abandoned.

The third solution was discovered by using the Apple of Eden on humans. If enough humans were told to believe in one idea, it would take form in reality. As such, the third solution was to launch an Apple of Eden into orbit, aim it towards the planet, and command all humans to one thought, "Make us safe." This thought alone would theoretically take form and protect the Earth. The issue however was trying to aim the Apple in the right direction and conveying the message that the First Civilisation wanted. After sending a dozen of Apples into orbit, the answer was still the same and the solution was abandoned.

The fourth and further solutions focused on matters of the body; in this vein, the fourth solution was to enhance the bodies of the First Civilization externally. The idea behind it would compose of transforming their bodies internally into steel that was able to withstand a hostile environment. [[Aita]], Juno's husband, volunteered to test the method. Within an instant, his mind degenerated and he became increasingly catatonic. With enough will, Aita wished for Juno to euthanize him, and she fulfilled it. The solution was abandoned and the researchers continued on similar matters.

The fifth solution was to create entirely new vessels that could safely transfer the consciousness that the former solution failed to do. The new vessels would be able to withstand the new environment, and they could house the transferred consciousness, but the ability to actually transfer it was impossible, so this solution was abandoned.

In time, Minerva discovered through divinations that there was a pattern of numbers and equations to existence, and that if one could comprehend them, they would tame time itself. The sixth solution was to attempt traveling back in time and trying to prevent the disaster beforehand, but the means to do so was too dangerous and it was abandoned.

Subsequently, Minerva founded one more solution, but it was never tested. She created a pedestal, the Eye, that would allow one who had the genetic material to manipulate the numbers of existence and protect the Earth by doing so. However, before Minerva could test it, she discovered that Juno had tampered with the Eye. While the patterns to save the world were still there, they would also allow Juno to have total control and power. Minerva forced the solution to be abandoned.

Before the world ended, Minerva looked forward in time using the numbers. She, Juno, and Jupiter used them to speak to Desmond Miles and his ancestors so that he may comprehend the situation, seek the Grand Temple, and prevent the disaster again that would occur in 2012.

==Disaster and aftermath==
The coronal mass ejection hit the Earth just as predicted, flipping the polarity of the Earth's magnetic field and exposing the planet to the Sun's deadly radiation. The entire planet burned for weeks afterward, and earthquakes and catastrophic blazes ravaged what remained of Earth.<ref name="Revelations"/>

The surface of the earth was rendered barren, and less than ten thousand humans and "far fewer" members of the First Civilization survived the catastrophe. In order to recover from the event, the remaining members of the First Civilization and their human creations brought their war to an end and began to work together to restore life to the planet.<ref name="Revelations"/>

Because their numbers were too few, the First Civilization failed to survive long as an independent species. Humans on the other hand, who had been built by the First Civilization "to survive", successfully managed to reconstruct their society and flourished.<ref name="AC2"/> Over time, the reshaping of the Earth's landscape and geography would eliminate nearly all physical evidence of the First Civilization.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations Official Game Guide]]''</ref>
{{Quote|Fashioned by the Helmschmied Armory in 1489, only a few sets were completed due to the weight of the metal.|[[Animus]] description.|Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood}}
[[File:Drachen V.png|right|200px]]
The '''Helmschmied Drachen Armor''' was a rare set of armor, crafted out of heavy metal. A set was worn by the [[Italian Assassins|Italian Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]].

The robes Ezio wore under the armor appeared similar to those of [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], though they possessed a leather texture, rather than cloth. On the waist, the [[Assassin insignia]] was flanked by rows of [[Throwing knives|throwing knife]] sheathes.

Across the torso, the armor was made up of stylized metal plates. The upper right arm guard extended higher than the shoulder, though that of the left was set lower to make room for a cape. The matching bracers of the armor were worn in conjunction with leather gloves on each hand.

==Availability==
Codes unlocking the Helmschmied Armor were available through any of the following:
*Purchase of the [[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood#Codex Edition|Codex]] or [[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood#Auditore Edition|Auditore Edition]] of ''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''.
*Pre-order of ''Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood'' from Amazon.com, [[Ubisoft]].com, Steam (for PC), or Play.com.
*Purchase of [[The Da Vinci Disappearance (DLC)|''The Da Vinci Disappearance'' DLC]] for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
*Purchase of the Platinum Edition of ''Assassins's Creed: Brotherhood'' for PlayStation 3, or of the Classics Edition for Xbox 360.

==Trivia==
*''"Helmschmied Drachen"'' is German for "Helmet Smith Dragon."
*Concept art showed that the robes with the Helmschmied Armor were intended to be white; however, in-game, the robes were primarily black.
*The Helmschmied armor also appeared as a purchasable item in ''[[Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy]]'', where its description stated that it was "the finest in foreign engineering" and had a price of 200,000 florins.
*As with other cosmetic outfits in ''Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood'', the Helmschmied Armor overrode Ezio's outfit and appearance at certain moments; such as when Ezio was supposed to be disguised as a [[Guards|guard]], when he was at the [[Caserma di Alviano]] fight club, or during the Cristina Memories, but did not affect gameplay itself.
*When Desmond arrived at the Santa Maria Aracoeli and found his way to the Colosseum Vault, through the bleeding effect he saw Ezio in his Helmschied Drachen Armor but he wasn't seen wearing it in the sequence memory.
