As early as 1476, the Barbarigo family had been affiliated with the Templars, with members of the family regularly attending Templar meetings in [[Rome]]. Despite the death of [[Emilio Barbarigo]] in 1485, at the hands of [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]], the son of Giovanni, the Barbarigo family remained steadfast. That same year, following the assassination of Doge [[Giovanni Mocenigo]] by the Templar [[Carlo Grimaldi]], [[Marco Barbarigo]] assumed the title of Doge; a point of much contention among his fellow Templars.

With Venice under Templar control, the Barbarigo family was able to utilize the entire city's vast resources in their mission to find an [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple of Eden]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Their joyous time was short-lived however, as Marco was assassinated during the [[Carnevale]], subsequently being replaced by his brother [[Agostino Barbarigo|Agostino]], a friend of the Assassins. Not long afterwards, Ezio sided with the Venetian [[Mercenaries]] Guild and assaulted the city's military district, which had remained under the control of Silvio and his servant [[Dante Moro]].

As the leader of the mercenaries, [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]] distracted the Templar soldiers, Ezio managed to sneak into [[Arsenale di Venezia]] and eliminate Silvio and Dante, seemingly ending the Templar presence in Venice.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

==History==
During the late 13th century, the family that would become known as the Auditore lived in the outskirts of [[Venice]]. Either around or after 1296, [[Domenico Auditore]] was inducted into the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]], under the tutelage of [[Dante Alighieri]].<ref name="AC2"/>

After Dante's death, Domenico was tasked with the duty of hiding [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]]'s [[Codex]] in [[Spain]], but was ambushed at sea by [[Templars|Templar]] pirates. With only his [[Renato Auditore|son]] remaining, he used the bank account given by [[Marco Polo]] to impersonate a nobleman in Florence. There, he took vocal lessons, studied architecture and the classics and adopted the Auditore name. The family continued to pose as a noble house to conceal their true Assassin identities.<ref name="AC2"/>

He then constructed a [[Villa Auditore|villa]] in the town of [[Monteriggioni]], hunted the Templars, and trained his son in how to fight them and collect the Codex pages. In 1476 [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni Auditore]][[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze| da Firenze]], Lorenzo's close friend and a member of the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]], discovered the involvement of the Pazzi family in a conspiracy against the Medici. Moving to forestall this, Giovanni managed to have [[Francesco de' Pazzi]] put in jail. However, the plot had already reached members of the Medici government itself. [[Uberto Alberti]], the Gonfaloniere of Justice, freed Francesco, and executed Giovanni for treason alongside his sons [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]] and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]], removing the [[House of Auditore|Auditore family]] from Florence.

With Giovanni dead, there was no barrier between the Pazzi and control of Florence, until [[Ezio Auditore|Ezio]], Giovanni's only surviving son, decided to avenge his family's murder. Joining with his uncle [[Mario Auditore|Mario]][[Mario Auditore da Firenze| Auditore da Firenze]] and his [[mercenaries]], Ezio infiltrated [[San Gimignano]]. There he witnessed a meeting between the Pazzi family and Rodrigo Borgia. During the ensuing battle between the mercenaries and Pazzi forces, Ezio killed his brash and aggressive rival [[Vieri de' Pazzi]], the youngest of the Pazzi conspirators.

===The Battle at the Duomo===
In 1478, Ezio returned to Florence to spy on the Pazzi as they were meeting with other Templars in the catacombs under the [[Santa Maria Novella]] church. It was in this meeting that they planned the assassinations of both Lorenzo de' Medici and his brother Giuliano de' Medici. Among the conspirators were [[Stefano da Bagnone]], [[Bernardo Baroncelli]], [[Francesco Salviati]], [[Antonio Maffei]], [[Jacopo de' Pazzi|Jacopo]][[Jacopo de' Pazzi| de' Pazzi]] and Francesco de' Pazzi. Rodrigo Borgia led the meeting and informed the conspirators that they had been given "spiritual" and military support from [[Wikipedia:Pope Sixtus IV|Pope Sixtus IV]].

The [[Wolves in Sheep's Clothing|next day]], the conspirators executed their plan. They publicly attacked the Medici brothers in front of the Duomo with Francesco and Bernardo brutally stabbing Giuliano to death. At the same time, Stefano and Antonio severely wounded Lorenzo, but fled when he drew his sword. Francesco and others continued to attack Lorenzo, but withdrew when Ezio Auditore da Firenze intervened. Lorenzo was forced to retreat to his [[Palazzo Medici|Palazzo]], while Pazzi forces engaged Medici loyalists in earnest.

Francesco gained control of the [[Palazzo della Signoria]], but Medici forces continued to resist. Meanwhile, Ezio fought his way to the roof of the palazzo and confronted Francesco. Francesco fled immediately, but was pursued over the city's rooftops, hunted down, and killed by Ezio.

===The Conspiracy's Failure===
When Jacopo arrived at the Palazzo with the support of many Florentine [[citizens]], it was far too late; Francesco's naked corpse had already been hung from the roof, causing the panicked Jacopo to flee the city on [[Horses|horseback]]. After their plot failed, the conspirators fled Florence to hide in the city of San Gimignano and in the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Despite this, Ezio hunted down and slew all of the conspirators. Jacopo went to plead his case to Rodrigo Borgia, meeting him covertly in an [[Antico Teatro Romano|ancient Roman theatre]], but was instead fatally wounded and used as bait to trap Ezio. Ezio fought his way out of the trap and ended Jacopo's suffering, and the Pazzi family with it. With its ruling family gone, San Gimignano was taken over by the Medici.

With the rule of the Medici, Lorenzo stripped the Pazzi family from everything and threw them into prison, even those who played no part in the conspiracy.

===Successful generations===
Throughout a great part of the 15th century, {{Wiki|Cosimo de' Medici}}, followed by Piero de' Medici, and lastly Lorenzo de' Medici ruled over Florence. Cosimo Medici, whose power stemmed from his vast wealth, ruled over Florence until his death in 1464, when he was succeeded by his son, Piero.

Piero's reign was short, spanning only five years before he succumbed to gout. After Piero, Lorenzo became the head of the Medici family. Like his grandfather and father, Lorenzo ruled Florence, through surrogates in the city councils, threats, payoffs, and strategic marriages. The Medici under Lorenzo were great patrons of arts and culture, and with his rule, Florence became the center of culture and innovation.

===The Pazzi conspiracy===

In 1478, while attending High Mass, Lorenzo and his brother, [[Giuliano de' Medici|Giuliano]], were attacked by members of the Pazzi family and their allies, in an event that would later be known as the [[Pazzi Conspiracy]]. Although the conspirators managed to kill Giuliano, Lorenzo was saved by [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]], who then returned Lorenzo to his [[Palazzo Medici|home]]. Once there, Lorenzo instructed Ezio to kill the main conspirator, [[Francesco de' Pazzi]]. After Ezio assassinated Francesco, he met with Lorenzo at the [[Ponte Vecchio]]. Once there, Lorenzo gifted Ezio a [[codex]] page as well as the names of Francesco's co-conspirators. After the meeting, Ezio left for Tuscany to pursue those responsible for the conspiracy.

Once Ezio had killed all those who played a part in the conspiracy, he returned to Lorenzo, who then presented him with the [[Assassin's Creed II Outfits#Medici Cape|Medici cape]] as a symbol of faith and trust, and the two parted ways.

===Savonarola's take over===
After Lorenzo's death in 1492, his son [[Piero de' Medici|Piero]] took control of the house. Unfortunately, Piero let Florence fall into the hands of [[Girolamo Savonarola]], who bewitched the citizens with a [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]].

Ezio Auditore returned to Florence in 1497, only to find that Savonarola had taken control over the city from the Medici. Finally in 1498, Ezio assassinated Savonarola and allowed the Medici to try and regain power. Despite this, it took the Medici fourteen years to regain control of Florence.
