Maria Thorpe was a English woman who impersonated one of Altaïr's assassination targets, the Templar Leader, Robert de Sable. According to Assassin's Creed II, she is also an ancestor of Desmond Miles, after she bore a child with Altaïr. She is voiced by Eleanor Noble.

With Robert foreseeing his assassination after eight of his comrades were killed by Altaïr. Sure that his assassination is planned to occur at a outdoor memorial in Jerusalem. He leaves Maria to impersonate him and flees to Arsuf to plead a case to the Saracens and Crusaders to unite against the Assassins. As expected, Altaïr appears, and a great swordfight ensues. Maria, impersonating Robert, is a surprisingly excellent fighter, but Altaïr defeats her. When he realizes that it is not Robert, but a woman, he spares her life and hurries to Arsuf to finish Robert once and for all.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
She is confronted after the assault on the harbor in Acre by Altaïr, where they engage in another swordfight, but Altaïr decides to spare her life again. He interrogates her about the Templars' plan for Cyprus. Altaïr takes Maria prisoner and they discuss the current turmoil in Cyprus with another assassin.

She travels to Limassol with Altaïr, where they meet up with the assassin contact on Cyprus and she is referred to as "Robert de Sable's girl". She is then escorted to Resistance safe house. Whilst on a ship, Altaïr notices a ring on Maria's ring finger and asks her about it and she replies that the ring is a gift Robert de Sable gave to her after he took her under his wing. Altaïr then convinces Maria that the Templars' views are wrong and she agrees with him.

Maria escapes from Altaïr at docks in Kyrenia, where he cuts her bonds and she kicks Altaïr down the ladder and escapes. She is found by Altaïr at the harbor, where she was being attacked by Templars along with a man named Markos. Altaïr helps the two in trouble. Maria is questioned about a man called "the bull" of whom she refer to as Moloch. Maria and the assassins inside the Kyernia safe house were taken prisoner, but when Altaïr comes to rescue her, he is told that Moloch's son Shalim has taken Maria away.

Maria escapes for Shalim, and is found at the harbour again by Altaïr, disguised as a consort and about to sneak into a palanquin headed for St. Hilarion castle. She confronts Shahar in his private room and confronts him about the Templars plan for the "Apple of Eden". As Altaïr enters the room, Shahar invites Shalim into the fight where Maria managed to killing two guards trying to stop her . Altaïr and Maria are side by side faced against the two brothers, as Altaïr says "Two of them... Two of us," Maria laughs and flees.

While Altaïr shows the Mysterious Templar Warrior the Apple of Eden, the warrior lunges for Altaïr and he then pulls his sword and Maria pushes Altaïr's sword into the warrior. She then speaks to Altaïr about the Apple of Eden and she describes how she thinks that his hands are not the right ones. A Templar ambush takes place and she tries to lead him up the stairs but instead he is fighting the waves of Templars. After fighting them he runs up the stairs and exits through the hidden door, followed by Maria.

When she enters the Templar Archives she starts fighting Armand Bouchart, the Grand Master of the Order of Templars. Altaïr intercepts the fight as Maria is sent flying by Bouchart, knocking her unconscious. After the encounter, both her and Altaïr have to escape the archives as they fall fast. Altaïr helps her up to the top ledge as they both escape the archives. She then tells him that she no longer wants to be part of the Templars and does not wish to return to England and will go to somewhere in the East. During Altair's last journal entry it is revealed that he had decided to travel with her.

Assassin's Creed II
Whoa... Alright, wasn't expecting that...

According to Assassin's Creed II, she was involved with Altaïr after the events of the first game, giving him two children. This is a justification of how Altaïr's line of descent supposedly got from the Fertile Crescent to Europe. While reading the codex pages Altair reveals that he and Maria had two sons, one of whom at some point in their life, attempted to (or succeeded in) assassinating Genghis Khan and become Ezio and Desmonds newest ancestor.

Additionally, the second time the player controls Desmond, the Bleeding Effect causes him to have a dream in which the player controls Altaïr chasing after a woman. The two meet atop a high tower in Acre, where the woman removes her hood and reveals herself to be Maria. She smirks and suggestively beckons Altaïr with her finger to come closer. He complies and they kiss, with the camera panning out as they began to make love. It zooms back in with the two lying together in a pile of hay. Altaïr then kisses Maria's forehead and jumps from the tower, though not before Desmond realizes that Maria just became his distant grandmother with that encounter.

Also revealed was that the child conceived during that encounter was the next ancestor of Desmond Miles. This means that no more memories can be seen through Altaïr or Maria after this point because the child would not be able to store the memories that happened after it was conceived.

Characteristics and personality
Maria has a straightforward nature when she first confronted Altaïr, she is shown to be skilled in swordsmanship as she was able to hold her own when confronted against him. She held a high in the Templar ranks because of her relationship with Robert, but after his assassination, her rank and her chance of knighthood dropped and was disallowed travel to Cyprus with the Templars. After the events of Bloodlines, it is presumed that she sided with Altaïr's cause. In Assassin's Creed II, it is revealed that Maria is an ancestor to Desmond Miles, when she eventually married and had two sons with his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

"Final Words" in Assassin's Creed
Altaïr: I would see your eyes before you die.

(Altaïr rips off the helm, only to see Maria's face).

Maria: I sense you expected someone else.

Altaïr: What sorcery is this?!

Maria: No sorcery, we knew you'd come. Robert needed to be sure he'd have time to get away.

Altaïr: So he flees!?

Maria: We cannot deny your success. You have laid waste to our plans: first, the treasure, then our men. Control of the Holy Land slipped away, but then he saw an opportunity, to reclaim what has been stolen, to turn your victories to our advantage!

Altaïr: Al Mualim still holds your treasure, and we've routed your army before! Whatever Robert plans, he'll fail again!

Maria: Ah, but it's not just Templars you'll contend with now!

Altaïr: Speak sense!

Maria: Robert rides for Arsuf to plead his case, that Saracen and Crusader unite... against the Assassins!

Altaïr: That will never happen! They have no reason to!

Maria: Had, perhaps. But now you've given them one: nine, in fact. The bodies you've left behind, victims on both sides. You've made the Assassins an enemy in common and ensured the annihilation of your entire order! Well done!

Altaïr: Not nine, eight.

Maria: (confused) What do you mean?

Altaïr: You are not my target. I will not take your life. You're free to go, but do not follow me!

Maria: I don't need to. You're already too late!

Altaïr: We'll see.

Model
Maria is likely based on Marguerite de Sablé, the daughter of Robert de Sable and Clemence de Mayenne, born before Robert's promotion to Grand Master of the Knights Templar.

Trivia
*If players connect the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed II with the PSP game Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, the weapons of the defeated bosses in Bloodlines will appear at the Auditore Family Villa. Maria's weapon is labeled as "Maria Thorpe's Longsword." This is the first mention of her surname.
*One can obviously tell that she is impersonating Robert de Sable because of her feminine figure that can be easily identified under Robert's costume and voice while she was ordering the soldiers, but Altair was still fooled.

Civilians are the common people in the Assassin's Creed series, found abundantly throughout the game worlds.

Assassin's Creed
Peasants are the general denizens of the cities (and the Kingdom) of the Holy Land in Assassin's Creed. Generally, they will do nothing to hurt Altaïr although there does exist some special variants of peasants that might.

Peasants are programmed to react realistically to Altaïr's actions: watching closely when he enters a fight, making comments as he free runs throughout the city, gasping when he buries his blade into an enemy and fleeing when the enemy dies. Peasants can also act as both a shield and a hindrance for Altaïr as he flees. If he runs into enough of them while sprinting, he will lose his balance and fall to the ground, greatly offending those he ran into. However, if he is shoving his way through a crowd, he may keep up his momentum.

If Altaïr murders a peasant, he suffers a large desynchronization due to his disregard for the first tenet of the Creed.

Assassin's Creed II
Civilians in Assassin's Creed II are very similar to their Assassin's Creed counterparts but do maintain a few more complexities to their reactions. Unlike peasants in Altair's time, the civilians of Italy will sometimes apologize to Ezio if he runs into them. Crowds will still continue to form around fights, but the civilians will also make comments about the fight and indicate which side they support by either whispering quiet support or cheering for Ezio's capture. Civilians will still also make comments about free-running and other high profile behavior. Civilians will call for the guards if they have been pickpocketed and if Ezio is caught doing so, they may start a brawl. Civilians have also been known for scolding Ezio for looting corpses or unconscious people. Other civilian behavior, such as painting buildings, repairing walls, or arguing, can be seen around the cities as well.

In many places such as Monteriggioni, the civilians compliment on his extraordinary actions such as displaying his free-running and climbing skills. Many of these include "what an athlete" and "such skill". After displaying violent acts such as killing or brawling may citizens retain the action of screaming and running away, combined with new sayings such as " I am only visiting I know nothing ".

If Ezio murders a civilian, a dialog box appears warning players that "Ezio did not kill civilians", indicating adherence to the Creed. If three civilians are killed, complete desynchronization will occur.

Civilian Types
Some civilians are different from the rest. Some may assist, be a hindrance, or an outright danger.

Beggars — Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II

: In the three cities, a desperate female beggar may pester Altaïr for money, claiming her family is "sick and dying" and "have nothing". They will pester Altaïr for several seconds, before giving up. If you attempt to climb a building to escape them, they will throw a rock at you. If you draw your sword, they will run away screaming. In addition, you may throw them in another direction to frighten them, this causes a loss in synchronization. Doing so enough, however, will get you an Achievement.
: In Assassin's Creed II, beggars will appear in some cities, but will not chase or harass Ezio for money, only leaning against a wall or standing up when Ezio is near them. If you throw money at them, they will pick them all up, thank you, and then walk away.

Carriers — Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II

: In the three cities (Damascus, Jerusalem, Acre), some peasants may be found walking around carrying something heavy. If you bump into them, they will drop the item and cause a big commotion. To pass by carriers without causing a commotion, they should be gently pushed aside while in Low Profile.

: In Assassin's Creed, Carriers come in two varieties: jar carriers and box carriers. Jar carriers are women carrying around a large jar on their head and box carriers are men holding a box close to their chest.
: In Assassin's Creed II, only box carriers appear.

Citizens in distress — Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

: Save Citizen
: Occasionally, Altaïr can find citizens that need saving within the three cities. They are often being harassed by guards for crimes they did not commit. Altaïr can kill the guards, and in doing so, unlock a group of either Scholars or Vigilantes.
: In Bloodlines, Citizens are the similar to their original counterparts, but will reward Altaïr with coins instead of unlocking a specific group.

Scholars — Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

: Scholars
: Scholars are holy men who silently, slowly walk through the three cities. Having robes similar enough to a Scholar's, Altaïr can blend in with a group of them to escape guards.
: In Bloodlines, Scholars do not come in groups and appear even when you have not saved any citizen. Altaïr cannot with them.
: In Assassin's Creed II, instead of Scholars, there are Monks. Their importance is severely diminished as Ezio can blend in with any crowd.

Thugs — Assassin's Creed

: Thugs
: Thugs or Courageous Citizens are burly denizens of the three cities, as well as Masyaf. They are the only peasants that will fight you, but only in a fistfight; drawing a weapon will cause them to flee. You can pickpocket Thugs for 5 throwing knives, or defeat them in a fistfight for one. Draw a weapon and kill them, however, and you will get zero knives.
: While they do not appear in Assassin's Creed II, it is worth noting that some civilians will fight you if you are caught pickpocketing.

Trouble Makers — Assassin's Creed

: In the three cities, one may find madmen and drunkards. They usually are found babbling, walking through back alleys, and struggling with chronic flatulence. If you get close, they will shove you violently and cause a big commotion. Because of this, killing Trouble Makers does not entail the synchronization loss experienced when Altaïr kills other citizens. Because Trouble Makers create a big commotion when they push you, it can cause you to become Exposed. This can sometimes cause you to fail a side mission, or break your cover as you attempt an assassination. They can also push you into water, instantly killing you.
: In Assassin's Creed II, they appear like the ones in the original game. However, they do not act aggressively towards you and act like normal civilians.

Vigilantes — Assassin's Creed

: Vigilantes
: Vigilantes are groups of brave, tough men. If Altaïr runs past a group of Vigilantes, and he is being chased by guards, the Vigilantes will grab the guards, delaying them greatly. Altaïr can then escape, or take the opportunity to assassinate the guards as they are held back.

Minstrels — Assassin's Creed II

: In any of the cities in Assassin's Creed II, minstrels will follow Ezio on the streets, playing a song on their lute and singing about Ezio. They are not as desperate as the beggars and will not throw rocks at him if he tries to escape. They are difficult to outrun and can be appeased by either throwing money at them or being attacked once with fists. However, doing any rash action against them (drawing weapons, punching, etc.) will cause an increase in Notoriety by 25%.

Trivia
*Assassin's Creed contains files titled "SnakeCharmer", but no snake charmer exists in the game. This hints that Ubisoft may have originally intended the game to feature snake charmers.
