Shaun Hastings job is to assist Desmond Miles by creating database entries on various people, places, and buildings that he encounters while in the Animus 2.0. As well as this, he gives tactical support, as well as relays messages from the higher command, to other Assassin teams across the planet, particularly to those who are on field duty.
Biography
Early life
From an early age, Shaun was always interested in conspiracy theories and the unknown. Though initially unaware of the existence of the modern-day Templars and Assassins, he did some investigating into a company called Abstergo Industries, and realized that they were "up to no good" and thus decided to try and stop them. Shaun dug up as much information as he could on Abstergo's activities, and then tried to tell others about his findings by reporting it to various newsgroups.

Unaware that the Templars would try to silence him, he was eventually found by Alan Rikkin, and kidnapped by Abstergo on December 10, 2010. However, he was able to escape in the van that was taking him to Abstergo. He was then contacted by Rebecca Crane, who "rescued" Shaun, and recruited him into the Assassin Order.

Hideout
After Lucy Stillman and Desmond Miles escaped to the hideout, Desmond entered the Animus to relive his ancestor, Ezio Auditore's memories. Whilst inside the Animus, Shaun supplied Desmond with informative database entries, as well as the occasional piece of advice on glyph puzzles. However, as the de facto historian of the Assassins, Shaun was constantly working on his computer, and rarely had the opportunity to speak with Desmond – often telling him to "go away."

Sanctuary
Upon escaping Abstergo and setting up camp at the Sanctuary in Monteriggioni, Shaun continued his research, as how he operated in the previous hideout. However, he was much more respectable and tolerate towards Desmond now, though he was still rude and disrespectful towards Rebecca - which caused Lucy to give him a greater workload than the others.

After Desmond completed the 9th Sequence of Ezio Auditore's memories, they were still left with the mystery of the location of the Apple of Eden. Desmond pointed out to the numbers on the wall, as well as the triple triad symbol, upon which Shaun correctly deduces, that they are relevant to God and God's number, 72, which he also states, is the same year that Rome's Colosseum was built. They all conclude that is where the Apple would be found, and begin their long road trip.

When they discovered the Apple, Desmond used it to ask where the Temples are located. Shaun, upon seeing and identifying the Phrygian Cap (which stands for freedom) and the Eye of Providence, said both come together in only one place.

However, before he could finish, Juno possessed Desmond through the Apple, causing a temporal freeze in time to those around him, and forced Desmond to stab Lucy in the abdomen.

At the point where Lucy and Desmond collapse, Shaun and Rebecca are still visibly conscious, and appeared unaffected by the Apple's power despite standing in the same positions they were since previously frozen.

Characteristics and personality
Shaun is often cynical, condescending, sarcastic, and pessimistic, but does have a playful side, often inserting humorous tidbits into the database entries he creates. He will often have too little patience to talk to Desmond, though at other times, he will lead off into a long conversation. While Shaun's annoyance is usually directed at Desmond, he also insults Rebecca, and comments on her immaturity by saying "the grown-ups are talking now" – all despite the fact she has saved his life multiple times. Notably, however, he does not get involved in the bickering between Desmond and Rebecca in Monteriggioni.

Shaun is desperate to enter the Animus, and even resorts to begging Lucy through her e-mail, which she silently declines by not replying. Although when he is confronted about it, he'll say that "the job behind the desk" is much better. When talking about his status as an Assassin, Shaun states "I've killed before, I expect to kill again. It's just that I’d prefer not to". He often portrays the rather sarcastic role of the one who does all the work and never gets noticed or rewarded, as he has complained more than once, saying "no one missed me." His cynical attitude is observed at many times, such as pointing out that the Assassins are still killers, whatever their motives; making them no more the "good guys", than the Templars.

He is also sceptical of most institutions such as the church and governments; he notes in one description of Venice that the city "followed the historical norm: The people got screwed." However, despite some of Subject 16's puzzles implying that the Assassins had actively resisted Abstergo's use of capitalism as a mechanism of control, Shaun's dialogue contradicts this as he uses the word "Communists" as a jibe at Lucy and Rebecca.

Despite his attitude towards Rebecca, he holds her in higher regard than he cares to admit, since she did save him from Abstergo. Only Lucy seems to be above his snide remarks, either as a sign of greater respect, or because he knows not to insult her.

Shaun's interest in history is shown clearly through database entries (along with one indicating a fondness for fly-fishing). This is also highlighted in an email from William M. who claims that Shaun will enjoy the area in which the Assassin leadership are based, and Desmond's assumption that Shaun is interested in Monteriggioni; Shaun responds however that Monteriggioni is no longer alive as a town as it has not changed for centuries.

Trivia
*Danny Wallace, the voice and model of Shaun, was contacted by Ubisoft when he attended the BAFTA video game awards with a friend. He was e-mailed and asked if he would like to be a character in an unknown video game, which he accepted. The game turned out to be Assassin's Creed II.
*Shaun's recruitment into the Assassin Order was rather unconventional, as Assassins are usually born into the Order.
*Shaun states during the corrupted sequences in Assassin's Creed II, that he forgot Rodrigo Borgia eventually became Pope, even though there is a portrait of him on the wall next to his computer.
*In one conversation with Desmond, Shaun tells him that he has his own special type of ability, which allows him to see information and decode it more easily. He compares it to Desmond's Eagle Vision, only more "useful" in his opinion. He is referring to his high intellect though, rather than some kind of super-human ability.
*The character Shaun Hastings is named after Sean Hastings, a cult hero in the computer industry.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Shaun has a portrait of Cesare Borgia near his desk, as well as pictures of famous landmarks in Rome, such as the Pantheon, and some of Leonardo da Vinci's designs, such as the crossbow.
*Shaun once dated a girl named Kate, whom he fondly calls "Kitty-Kat". However, he is embarrassed when Rebecca reveals that, over lunch, Kate had told Rebecca that Shaun had never made it to second base.
*Shaun's password for his e-mail account is GuyFawkes23, which likely refers to Guy Fawkes, a man who was instrumental in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
**Guy Fawkes was also the pseudonym Shaun used for his attempted revelation of Abstergo's true nature, according to the inbox of Abstergo employee James Morse.
*It is hinted that Shaun was an altar boy at some stage in his childhood, due to his priest saying "You know too much for your own good".
The Fall of the Assassin Order was an event in the year 2000 that nearly caused the ultimate downfall of the Assassin Order. Caused by the mysterious Daniel Cross, the event would have an impact on the later generations of Assassins, as they were forced to operate in small teams gathered throughout the world rather than as a worldwide organization.

Cross' abduction
In September 1985, a young American boy was abducted by the Lineage Discovery and Acquisition division of Abstergo Industries, and became a test subject known as Subject 4; later codenamed Daniel Cross. Using a working prototype capable of mimicking a Piece of Eden, an impulse was implemented into Subject 4's brain that would force him to infiltrate the Assassin Order and kill the Order's Mentor once the opportunity to do so would arise.

Once Abstergo was finished with experimenting, Daniel Cross was sent into the outside world in his underwear. He was picked up by a man named Luke and his partner, who noticed the young boy while driving in their truck. After the woman called out to Daniel, he only replied in Russian; after having been experimented upon, Cross had been suffering from the bleeding effect and was reliving the memories of his Russian ancestor, the Assassin Nikolai Orelov.

Assassination of the Mentor
After two years of training his mind and body, and of searching for the Mentor, Daniel was brought to Dubai where he finally met him. The Mentor told him that he had heard of Daniel's visions, and believed that he would be of very unique value. He also implied that he would choose Daniel as his successor. He then presented Daniel his Hidden Blade, telling him that he had "earned it" and fully initiated him into the Assassin Order.

As soon as he put it on, Daniel felt as if he was made to wear and use it. Suddenly, Daniel recalled his memories from Abstergo, being experimented upon by Warren Vidic, having the impulse to kill the Mentor buried so deep within him that he hadn't realized it until the time had come, of Bellamy and Hannah telling him to unleash whatever was inside of him and of being given a new name; Daniel Cross.

Acting on the impulse, Daniel assassinated the Mentor.

The Fall
Subsequently following the assassination of the Mentor, Daniel returned to Abstergo's Research Facility in Philadelphia. With the information retrieved from Daniel, who had visited every single Assassin training camp in the world, Abstergo mobilized tactical teams to initiate strikes on Assassin compounds globally. This forced the Assassins to evacuate their respective bases and go into hiding.
Over the centuries, the Pieces of Eden resurfaced; seen as religious artifacts or holy relics, the foremost among them being the Apple of Eden. However, as time continued, groups of individuals began to see the Pieces of Eden for what they truly were, advanced technologies to be exploited. As early as the 12th Century, the Templars were actively seeking and obtaining numerous Pieces of Eden, in the hopes of uniting the world in peace much like Those Who Came Before had done, and in 1191, they sought the Apple itself.

High Middle Ages
Led by the Grand Master of the Order, the Templars used the cover of the Third Crusade to infiltrate the catacombs of Solomon's Temple, in the city of Jerusalem, where they knew the Apple was located. Unfortunately for them, Al Mualim, leader of the Assassin Order and secretly also a Templar, had sent his best to capture the device. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and the brothers A-Sayf intercepted the Templars, and despite the death of Kadar and Altaïr being thrown from the battle early on, the Assassins prevailed and spirited the Apple to their fortress in Masyaf. For a year the Assassins and Templars fought one another for control of the artifact, until finally the deaths of both Robert de Sable and Al Mualim at the hands of Altaïr ended the conflict. Originally intending to destroy the Apple, Altaïr found himself unable to do so, and instead decided to seal the Apple in the Limassol Archives after he had liberated it from the Templars; circumstances worked against this however, and he decided to keep the Apple himself, lest it fall into the wrong hands.

The Apple's Travel
Ultimately, the Apple did find its way to Cyprus, where it was buried away until its discovery and exhumation by the Templars in 1488. The Apple was shipped to Venice, but Ezio Auditore managed to procure it before it could go into Templar hands. However, during the events of Battle of Forlì, the Apple was taken from Ezio by Girolamo Savonarola, and Savonarola used it to cause the Bonfire of the Vanities in Florence.

During the Italian Renaissance
In 1499, Ezio used the Apple, combined with the power of the Papal Staff (also a Piece of Eden) to open up the Vault underneath the Vatican. However, shortly afterward, during the Siege of Monteriggioni, Cesare Borgia took the Apple from Mario Auditore. In 1503, after liberating Rome, Ezio took back the Apple hidden in St. Peter's Basilica. After figuring out the power of the Apple, Ezio hid it in a Temple underneath the Colosseum.

The Power of the Pieces of Eden
Centuries later, whilst hacking into the Animus, the mysterious Subject 16, discovered that throughout history, the Pieces of Eden had an extensive history of changing hands, with historically notable figures, many Templars or Assassins, laying claim to them; Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Mahatma Gandhi, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Henry Ford, Adolf Hitler , and Qin Shi Huang to name but a few. By 2012 however, many had fallen into the hands of the Templars; seeking to obtain the rest, the Animus project was set up with the intention of locating and securing the remaining Pieces of Eden. This Animus project was also an important component in the Templars goal of ensuring world peace, through use of the Pieces of Eden. By using the Pieces of Eden, the Templars sought to manipulate the neuro-transmitters in the entire human race to achieve their goal. Eye-Abstergo, a branch of Abstergo Industries, planned to launch an "all-in-one telecommunication" satellite into orbit around the Earth; unbeknownst to humanity and indeed, many employees of Abstergo Industries, the satellite would contain at least one Piece of Eden, and spread its power out on a global scale.

Outcome
In 2012, the modern-day Assassins, Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Shaun Hastings, and Rebecca Crane used the Animus to locate the Piece of Eden hidden by Ezio Auditore beneath the Santa Maria Aracoeli in 1507.

Characteristics
Attributes
Amongst the greatest tools known to man; by interacting with a neuro-transmitter located deep in the brain of the human body, the Apples of Eden could control the human mind. Other Pieces of Eden were capable of warping reality, creating illusions and ensuring total obedience; both the Templars and the Order of Assassins believed that the Pieces of Eden were the sources of many historical tales and miracles, such as the Parting of the Red Sea, the Trojan Horse, and the miracles enacted by "the Christ-figure" who foreshadowed the Christian faith, and the Biblical plagues that ravaged Egypt, among other supernatural happenings.

Abilities of the Pieces
Some were known to interact with and change the passage of time, possibly creating paradoxes; these potential outcomes were deemed too risky by Abstergo, deciding that these Pieces should be sealed away for the time being. Some Pieces of Eden were also able to "speak" to those who wielded them, as was the case with Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Perotto Calderon who spoke with the sixth Apple and the Shroud respectively.

Energy Pulse
The Pieces of Eden, or at the very least the Apples, were capable of extending a pulse of energy when activated, that would drive those targeted to insanity and death, or force other to fight each other to near death. Doing so however, had a detrimental effect on the physical health of the wielder. Using the Pieces' powers in short bursts, however, could minimize the negative effects dealt out by the artifacts; though to what extent, is unknown.

Denver Accident and Outcome
Following the destruction of the second Piece of Eden during experimental use at Denver International Airport, the Templars found themselves in need of another artifact with similar properties. Needing access to a map that indicated the location of all Pieces of Eden, the Templar front company Abstergo Industries kidnapped the descendant of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – Desmond Miles – in order to view the memories of his ancestor. This would allow them to view the very same map Altaïr had viewed in 1191.

Destruction of a Piece
Each of the Pieces of Eden contained a great deal of energy stored within, and the destruction of one would cause an explosion on the same scale of a nuclear blast. One such blast occurred in 1908, in the region of Tunguska, Russia, when the Piece of Eden known as "the Staff" was seemingly destroyed by Nikolai Orelov as a strike against the Templars. Even destroyed, the Pieces of Eden were still capable of great feats. Following the destruction of the Staff, at least one shard remained and, despite the obliteration of every other remnant of the artifact, still possessed impressive powers of mind control, as demonstrated by Grigori Rasputin, who in the possession of the shard, managed to force the attraction of Alexandra Feodorovna, the consort of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.

Resistance
Although the First Civilization created humanity with a neuro-transmitter that forced them to accept the will of the Pieces of Eden, eventual cross-breeding between the gods and their slaves bore a hybrid species. These new humans possessed some of the natural abilities of their gods, but most notably, were free of the neuro-transmitter that bound them to the will of the Pieces of Eden. The first two known individuals to be born immune to the effects of the Pieces were Adam and Eve, who later stole the Apple of Eden and precipitated the war that followed. Members of the lineage also inherited these natural abilities and immunity to the mind-control of the Pieces, although the Pieces' ability to physically control them remained. Individuals such as Altaïr and his descendants Ezio Auditore, Subject 16 and Desmond Miles all possessed these enhanced abilities, and presumably, an immunity to the Pieces of Eden.

Awareness
By the early 21st Century, the Templars were aware of both the existence of Those Who Came Before and the fact that some humans were immune to the mind control of the Apples of Eden, and as such actively sought other devices to compensate for this. On at least one occasion Dr. Warren Vidic, an employee of Abstergo Industries, received an email from an unknown individual who had not been affected by the powers of the Apple, and threatened to expose what he had seen.

Confirmed Pieces of Eden
Besides the Apples of Eden, the First Civilization created many more Pieces of Eden. Some of these affected humanity in similar ways, whilst others affected nature and even time itself.

Apples and Staff
The first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth Apples were all capable of controlling the minds of men, creating illusions and, to a degree, permitted physical control over said minds; the Apples could all be used in conjunction with the Staff of Eden, which increased the abilities of both Pieces.

The Shroud and Sword
Other Pieces included the Shroud, which would become famous to modern day humans as the "Shroud of Turin" – that which covered the body of Jesus Christ, its properties including the ability to heal the wounds of those it touched, and the Sword, a Piece that would pass through the hands of many great rulers through the centuries, including King Arthur and Alexander the Great.

Crystal Skulls
The Crystal Skulls were also Pieces of Eden and these would be scattered throughout Central and Southern America. Shaka Zulu came into possession of one of the skulls which was previously in Europe in the possesion of Giovanni Borgia.

Time Manipulation
According to e-mails read by Desmond Miles, at least one Piece of Eden existed that granted the ability to manipulate time. Concerns over possible paradoxes however, lead to Abstergo Industries locking it away.

Known locations of Pieces of Eden
Following the death of Al Mualim and the Apples projection of a map indicating the location of all Pieces of Eden, Altaïr copied the map and included it in his Codex, hidden away so that only one of his bloodline might see it. Based off of the locations given on the Codex map, the following locations can be identified as containing a Piece of Eden:

Trivia
*According to the glyphs and Truth files, many legends and myths throughout human history are actually historically accurate. The supernatural or paranormal parts of each legend can be explained by the protagonist in each having acquired his or her own Piece of Eden (i.e.: the Greek myth of Perseus, King Arthur, etc).
*In Assassin's Creed II, during the battle against Borgia in the Sistine Chapel, Ezio created copies of himself, much like Al Mualim did against Altaïr. If Ezio robes are customized, or if Altaïr's Armor is enabled, his copies will appear with different sets of armor and colors whereas when if he is not customized, each copy will be perfectly identical to the real Ezio, besides his weapon.
*Both the Codex map, and the Map projection at the end of Assassin's Creed show that there are only fifty Pieces of Eden at a time, but Subject 16 says the Shroud is Piece of Eden 'number 66'. This discrepancy has yet to be rectified.
**In the French and German version of Assassin's Creed II, the Shroud is referred to as number 36, not 66. Whether this is a mistake in the translation or not, remains to be clarified.
*The Chalice was initially thought to be a Piece of Eden; however, besides the Shroud, all other artifacts linked to the Christ-figure were confirmed to be only literary tools, as stated in Assassin's Creed I.
