The apprentices, also referred to as recruits, are Assassins who were formerly citizens saved by Ezio Auditore from the rough streets of Rome, during the war against the Templars. They have subsequently devoted themselves to learning the ways of the Assassin Order, motivated by their lust for revenge against the Borgia for corrupting the beautiful city of Rome.

Operating out of the Tiber Island headquarters, the apprentices were sent on missions across Europe in order to improve their skills and combat experience beyond their traditional training. However, the apprentices did not always survive these missions. When not on missions assigned by Ezio outside Rome, the apprentices would support the efforts of Ezio and his allies, providing reinforcement during Ezio's own missions.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Recruiting
After destroying a Borgia Tower, symbols will randomly appear on your map where citizens can be recruited. You can choose whether to save them or not, but they will eventually die if you don't. After saving a citizen from the guards, you'll have a choice to either speak to them or leave them, if you speak to them they will always join you, if you don't talk to them, they will eventually disappear. After successfully recruiting someone for his cause, Ezio sends them to Niccolò Machiavelli to become an Assassin. You can only recruit twelve apprentices (all of whom can be either male or female), but if one dies, they can always be replaced.

On the Field
In-game, Ezio is able to have up to six support him during his missions, and each time they fight, they will gain experience points to rank up. On the field, Ezio signals these Assassins by raising his arm and clenching his fist, indicating that they should strike. This signal, followed by an eagle's screech, is known as a "B.A.M." or a Brotherhood Assistance Maneuver. The apprentices can appear from anywhere, usually from inside hiding spots or over ledges. Particularly when against a mounted enemy, the apprentices can also come in on horseback, and can engage in horse chases. On rare occasions, when there are no hiding spots or buildings to appear from, the apprentices may be teleported into the battle by the Animus.

Missions
During the course of the game, players have the opportunity to send the apprentices to different cities across Europe to complete tasks and assassinations. If they finish the mission, the apprentices earn money for Ezio and experience points; but if they die, they will be lost forever. The chances of the Assassins completing the mission depend on how difficult the mission is, the amount of experience the Assassins already have, and how many Assassins you send. Though sending more Assassins increases the probability of success, each receive less experience, as the total experience gained must be divided equally among all of them. Missions take place in Rome, Florence, Venice, Constantinople, Lisbon, Barcelona, Moscow, Paris, London, Cologne and Calicut.

Customization
Players can also customize the apprentices' colors of their robes. Each one of the apprentices also has a different personality. Later on, players can use the experience points they've gained to upgrade their apprentices' armor and weapons. Once an apprentice achieves rank ten (Assassino) his/her armor will change and appear to look almost identical to Ezio's Master Assassin outfit, only having very subtle differences such as the cloak where the color is decided by the customized color they wore as "Students". These Master Assassin robes that the apprentices wear cannot be customized however, and always remain as Assassin White. If an apprentice has a certain color of robes, the color of their Master Assassin cape will correspond to that color.

BAM System
As Ezio recruits and trains more apprentices, he will gain signals, which appear as red bars underneath the Synchronization bar. Up to 3 signals can be earned. The signals represent the amount of times Ezio can use the BAM system (Brotherhood Assistance Maneuver) which allows him to call his apprentices to aid him in the field.

The first signal is rewarded once one Assassin apprentice is recruited, then another when you have 4 Assassin apprentices. The third and final signal is unlocked once you have 6 Assassin apprentices. Once Ezio has used a signal, the signal won't be usable until roughly one minute has passed, and using all three of them will not allow Ezio to use the BAM until the first one has recharged. BAM signals can become unavailable if an insufficient number of apprentices are present in the guild, such as if some have left on missions.

Apprentices can also ride and use horses in battles, either attacking on horseback with their sword or hidden gun, or performing assassinations from horseback.

The apprentices are capable of three attack strategies:
*The Arrow Storm: This move is particularly useful if Ezio is blocked by a group of guards. He signals to the apprentices, and they shoot arrows at the targets and kill any in sight. If there is a large number of apprentices to aid Ezio, all the guards will be killed simultaneously. You must have at least six Assassin apprentices at your disposal to use the arrow storm, as it requires all 3 signals to use.
*The Air Assassination: This move is where the apprentices jump and assassinate the indicated targets. If there are some enemies remaining, the apprentices engage them in combat.
*The Smoke Assassination: A combination of air assassinating and smoke bombs, the apprentices jump and assassinate as many enemies as possible, then throw smoke bombs, creating a distraction and allowing Ezio to move in and attack as well.

Known In-game Apprentices
The following is an alphabetical list of known names of apprentices that appear in the game, which are randomly generated for each citizen Ezio saves. Blue denotes male, red denotes female:
Trivia
*While all apprentices wear default uniforms similar to Ezio's, not all of them are ever exactly the same.
*The apprentices are equipped with only a single hidden blade, unlike Ezio who is granted two. They do, however, acquire a hidden gun, smoke bombs and various melee weapons as they level up.
*Though you can only have twelve apprentices at a time, the ability to recruit them is infinite, which means that, even if many of them die in battle, they can always be replaced.
*Apprentices are able to grab the horse of a dismounted enemy. This prevents its escape, and allows either Ezio or the Assassin himself or herself to ride it.
*Gabriel Graziani, the Community Developer for Brotherhood, had once stated that there will be a special cutscene when an Assassin dies. Although there is no such cut scene, Ezio may approach and close the eyes of the fallen Assassin, honoring them.
*It was stated by developers that the player could pick a single Assassin recruit to be a "right-hand Assassin." However, this action is not present in any form in the game.
*Once an apprentice is promoted to the rank of Assassino, there is a cut scene showing the Assassin performing a Leap of Faith into the Tiber, while Ezio and Niccolò watch. (Even though they cannot swim, they somehow survive the leap of faith into the river.)
*Assassins can't swim, but when they fall in water they are just gone and not dead, so you could use them again later.
*When managing Assassins for an Assassination contract, even when the odds of success are 100%, sometimes the mission can still be failed, although you will not lose the Assassin(s) used for that contract.
*It is possible to kill an apprentice by using the Apple of Eden with him/her in the blast range.
*There is an interesting glitch when both an Assassin and Ezio try to assassinate the same guard simultaneously. You will both appear to leap on him in high profile, but Ezio will then promptly teleport onto the next closest guard, killing him as well.
*Sometimes when Assassins are called into battle, they will jump out of haystacks, without any explanation of how they got there, or how long they had been waiting inside.
*The Assassins receive no damage from falling, even from the top of the Castel Sant'Angelo.
*Assassin Recruits can sometimes be heard saying "Requiescat in pace" when they kill an enemy.
*When reaching the rank of Assassino, the recruit will acquire a sword that is identical to the swords used by the Masyaf guards in Assassin's Creed.
*If you try to follow an Apprentice, they will eventually get to Tiber Island and stop, though taking various confusing turns trying to disappear from the players screen.
Throwing Knives are weapons that the Assassins can throw at enemies, injuring or taking them out from a distance.

Assassin's Creed
In Assassin's Creed, the throwing knives are first available at rank 4. The knives seem to be one of the most powerful weapons (after the hidden blade), and unless the enemy is a Templar or a boss character, they generally kill with one hit. When Altaïr runs out of knives, he can get more by either pickpocketing them from thugs (earning five knives), by defeating thugs in a fistfight (only one knife, zero if a blade is used), or by returning to either an Assassins' Bureau or Masyaf (maximizes knife count).

The maximum amount of knives Altaïr can hold increases at certain ranks. After first becoming available at rank 4, at which point the knife capacity is five, Altaïr gets extra Knife Belts at ranks 7 and 10, increasing the capacity to ten and fifteen respectively. Each set of knives are sheathed at his waist, left boot, and right shoulder.

Achievement
On the Xbox 360 version you can get an achievement by killing 75 guards with Throwing Knives.
Assassin's Creed II
Throwing Knives return in Assassin's Creed II, though the damage for each knife has been scaled down. This is likely to balance gameplay due to the introduction of the Hidden Gun, as well as to account for the fact that Ezio can hold up to twenty-five of them, once all of the upgrades have been purchased.

Throwing Knives cost 50 florins each, and can be bought from Blacksmiths. Since these are very cheap and can be bought at any Blacksmith, try to use the knives as much as possible before acquiring the Hidden Gun.

Compared to the Hidden Gun, the Throwing Knives are reasonably more accurate, as well as quicker to throw, at the cost of power.

Extra sheaths for throwing knives can be purchased at Tailor shops. Up to 20 knives can be carried through upgrades. An additional 5 slots can be purchased through Uplay for 20 Uplay points.

The special attack of the throwing knife may be learned from the training instructor in Monteriggioni. The special attack allows Ezio to throw three knives at once, effectively dispatching up to three enemies. This is, for whatever reason, an instant kill on all guards, even Brutes. A viable explanation would be that Ezio would need time to pinpoint and hit an enemies' vital points, thus keep in mind that it takes longer to target multiple enemies. Ezio must also be engaged in a battle in order to use this ability.

It takes two throwing knives to kill a guard who is watching you, but only one to kill a guard to whom you are invisible; except in Venice, where it takes two knives regardless of whether or not you are visible to them.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Throwing knives are also available in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. Ezio is now able to throw multiple knives at enemies (similarly to the special attack in Assassin's Creed II) even when he is not engaged in battle. He will throw the amount of throwing knives as the enemies in range (which may be from one to three guards) and kill them instantly.

Furthermore, Ezio is able to throw knives while he has the short blade equipped, much like Altaïr could in Assassin's Creed. Unlike in Assassin's Creed II, throwing knives instantly kill all guards.

Throwing Knives can also be considered obsolete as a stealth weapon, due to the introduction of the Crossbow, which possesses a longer range, and is equally silent. However, the knives are still best when Ezio needs to kill multiple foes at a distance.

Throwing knives also serve as an ability for multiplayer characters, though they are always non-lethal, and can only be used to temporarily slow down an opponent.

Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed, during the Animus loading sequence, you are able to select the throwing knives and throw an infinite number of them.
*In Assasin's Creed, knives can only be used to stun or injure escaping targets.
*A throwing knife, courtesy of Rodrigo Borgia, nearly killed Giovanni Auditore in Assassin's Creed: Lineage.
*Giovanni Auditore only carried two throwing knives, on his chest, and it is unexplained as to whether this was due to his own preference or to his skill (or lack thereof) with the weapon.
*In Assasin's Creed II, when not locked on, Ezio will throw a knife in the last direction he walked to. Certain targets will not run unless Ezio enters a certain zone around the targets. If Ezio remains out of this zone and a skilled player throws knives using the described method, he can easily kill them.
*There is an interesting glitch in Assassin's Creed II that can be performed using the throwing knives' special attack. While moving on a rooftop or a ledge that Ezio can peer down by bumping up against the edge, equip the throwing knives and hold down the weapon hand button. Ezio will keep walking in the direction he was facing when you first pressed the button, and will maintain his current speed and elevation above ground level. Several Youtube videos have been made giving instructions on how to get this result, though most of them state that the glitch (along with the flying-jump-Ezio glitch) has since been patched.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, regardless of the throwing knife capacity of the knife belt, there is no visible knife belt present. The knife belt only appears when the character is in a state of loading (such as when Ezio glows white during an armor switch or clothes dyeing) or within the Animus Virtual Training Program.

The Armor of Brutus is an unbreakable set of armor available in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The armor was the greatest possession of a mysterious cult called the Followers of Romulus. The armor is unlocked by obtaining all Romulus scrolls and keys from the six secret lairs spread throughout the city of Rome.

It is the strongest armor in-game and is found alongside the Dagger of Brutus. Like the Armor of Altaïr, the Armor of Brutus has 25 health diamonds, and cannot be dyed nor broken.

Appearance
The armor looks much bulkier than Ezio Auditore's Master Assassin robes due to the fur cloak that is padded along the pauldron. The fur is implied to be a tribute to Romulus, and thus is likely to be wolf fur. There is a silver eagle on the right shoulder that holds the cape up, as well as on the waist area where the Assassin symbol would normally be, which has been relocated to be engraved right above it, on the mid-abdomen section of the armor (a second Assassin's symbol is engraved onto the back of the armor as well).

The armor comes with a grey, short-sleeved robe that is worn underneath the breastplate. The bottom of the robes are in three layers, each one on top of the other, and come down to Ezio's knees. However, the bottoms act in a similar fashon to a kilt, completely covering the legs, whereas the Master Assassin robes part at the sides and front-to-back to keep movement unencumbered. This does not affect mobility in the game, however.

The armor set consists of both metal and leather. The chest armor and spaulders are mostly metal, while the vambraces and greaves are completely leather. The vambraces and greaves are also very plain-looking pieces of armor, having very little design compared to the rest of the armor. Unlike the vambraces bought in the game, the Vambraces of Brutus cover both of Ezio's forearms instead of only his right. The hood and cape, which appear to be connected, are colored red with a golden trim on the cape.

Trivia
*The eagle-motif of the armor, the beak-shaped appearance of the hood, and the Assassin insignia on the armor's back strongly implies that Marcus Junius Brutus, the original owner of the armor, was a member of the Assassin Order.
*The Armor of Brutus gives the same amount of health to Ezio as the Seusenhofer armor set, though the latter allows Ezio to wear his regular, customizable robes.
*It is not confirmed whether Ezio actually acquired the Armor of Brutus in his lifetime, as it is not mandatory to have the armor to obtain full Synchronization. As shown in the cutscene of his fight with Cesare Borgia during the beginning of the game, as well as during his return to the Villa Auditore ruins, he is not shown wearing the Armor of Brutus.
*It is unexplained as to why the armor is so durable, unlike the Armor of Altaïr, which had been fortified based on knowledge from the Apple of Eden, as explained in the Codex.
*The Armor of Brutus is much older than the Armor of Altaïr, yet how it managed to remain as strong as the armor of the Syrian Master Assassin's - when his armor was made using a special formulae gleaned from the Apple of Eden - remains unknown.
