The '''Russian Assassins''' were the Brotherhood of [[Assassins]] located in and around [[Russia]], formed some time after the early 16th century.

By the late 19th century, the Russian Assassins had prioritized the abolition of the Tsarist rule over Russia, even more so when some of the Russian Tsars had allied themselves with the [[Templars]].

It was the Russian Assassin [[Nikolai Orelov]] who caused both the [[Borki train disaster]] and the [[Tunguska explosion]], two disastrous events in Russia's history, and the Assassins later stood alongside the [[Bolsheviks]] during the [[Russian Revolution]].

==History==
===Spying on the Kremlin===
During the 15th century, the [[Italian Assassins]] sent several Assassins, including [[Pietro Antonio Solari]] and [[Ridolfo Fioravant|Ridolfo "Aristotele" Fioravant]], to [[Moscow]], where they were recruited by Tsar [[Ivan III Vasilevich]] as architects to work on the [[wikipedia:Moscow Kremlin|Kremlin]]. Unbeknownst to Ivan, they secretly kept an eye on his activities and ambitions, reporting back to the Assassins in Italy.<ref name="ACPL - Contracts">''[[Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy]]'' - [[Contracts in Project Legacy|Contracts]]</ref>

However, in 1493, Ivan found out that Solari and Aristotele were spies, and had Solari killed. Aristotele, realizing Ivan was close to uncovering who they worked for, turned himself into the culprit for the murder. Additionally, he began creating rumors about a revival of the [[wikipedia:Strigolniki|Strigolniki Sect]].<ref name="ACPL - Contracts"/>

In the early 1500s, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] sent a group of [[Apprentices|Assassin apprentices]] to Moscow to find out what happened to Solari. The Assassins infiltrated the Kremlin, knocking a group of guards unconscious and eventually finding documents pointing out that Aristotele murdered Solari. After a search for Aristotele's location, offering small amounts of coins for rumors, they were directed to a church where Aristotele was rumored to hide. Having threatened the priests to lure Aristotele out, he came out to protect his people and explained his actions to the apprentices. The apprentices carried out the plans Aristotele had made to fool Ivan into believing the Assassins were working for the Strigolniki Sect, until they found two of Ivan's top investigators. Killing the two men, they carved the bodies with the symbol of the Strigolniki Sect and left them hanging from church beams, with Aristotele leaving a note declaring himself the leader of the sect. The apprentices and Aristotele returned to [[Rome]] to question Aristotele, and new Assassin spies were sent to Moscow.<ref name="ACPL - Contracts"/>

===The Narodnaya Volya===
In the late 19th century, the Russian Assassins became known to the public as the [[Narodnaya Volya]], a left-wing organization quickly associated with terrorism. The Narodnaya Volya was founded with the sole purpose of opposing and removing the Russian aristocracy, following [[Alexander II of Russia|Tsar Alexander II]]'s new-formed alliance with the [[Templars]]. The Narodnaya Volya made several attempts on the Tsar's life, until they were finally successful on 13 March 1881 when the Tsar was killed during a bombing.<ref name="ACTF1">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Fall]]'' - Issue #1</ref>

Tsar Alexander II's son and successor, [[Alexander III of Russia|Alexander III]], continued upholding the Templar ties his father had formed. The Narodnaya Volya continued their struggle against the House of Romanov, again making several attempts on the Tsar's life. In 1887, Alexander's secret police found out about an Assassin assassination plot against him and had the conspirators arrested. All conspirators were hanged two months later, among which was [[Aleksandr Ulyanov]], brother of [[Vladimir Lenin]].<ref name="ACTF1"/>

The next year, the [[Mentor]] sent [[Nikolai Orelov]] on a lone mission to infiltrate the Tsar's imperial train riding from the [[wikipedia:Crimea|Crimea]] to [[Saint Petersburg]] and kill him. Orelov, fighting his way through the train despite being told not to use violence whenever possible, arrived at the Tsar's dining cart only to find the Tsar's family present. Alexander himself attacked the lone Assassin from behind, and a fight ensued inside the carriage, eventually causing the train to derail; the event that would be known as the [[Borki train disaster]]. After rescuing his family, the Tsar pulled out his Imperial Sceptre - secretly a [[Staves of Eden|Staff of Eden]] - and dared the Assassin to fight him with. Alexander easily retook the Staff and overpowered Orelov, but spared the Assassin's life when he noticed his family was bearing witness to the scene.<ref name="ACTF1"/>

===Tunguska explosion===
In 1908, Nikolai Orelov and two other Assassins found and interrogated a Templar named [[Dolinsky]], who - under heavy threats from Orelov - gave up the location of where the Staff of Eden was located; [[Tunguska]],<ref name="ACTF2">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Fall]]'' - Issue #2</ref> previously taken there by the Templar agent [[Grigori Rasputin]]. The Assassins contacted [[Nikola Tesla]], a scientist who was previously heavily discredited and slandered by industrialist Templars in the [[United States]], and offered him a chance to take revenge on the Templars by broadcasting electricity to the Tunguska facility to destroy it,<ref name="AC2">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]'' - [[Glyphs]]</ref> while Orelov and his two companions were ordered to retrieve the artifact from the facility.<ref name="ACTF2"/>

The Assassins went into the research facility and killed the Templar guards inside, but were too late to complete their objective. As soon as Orelov reached out to grab the Staff, Tesla broadcasted electricity to the facility, causing the [[Tunguska explosion]]. Orelov was the only survivor.<ref name="ACTF2"/>

===Russian Revolution===
In 1917, the [[Bolsheviks]] instigated the [[Russian Revolution]] against [[Nicholas II of Russia|Tsar Nicholas II]]. The Russian Assassins strongly supported the Bolsheviks, hoping to abdicate the Tsarist throne. Under pressure from the Assassins, Nicholas formally abdicated the throne in 1917.<ref name="Encyclopedia">''[[Assassin's Creed Encyclopedia]]''</ref>

[[Vladimir Lenin]], the leader of the Bolsheviks whose [[Aleksandr Ulyanov|brother]] was an Assassin himself, requested his old friend Nikolai Orelov to assassinate Nicholas II, to bring the Revolution to an end. Orelov left for the Winter Palace, having seen a picture of Nicholas holding a staff similar to the one destroyed in the Tunguska explosion. Orelov infiltrated Nicholas' Winter Palace and confronted the Tsar, who showed Orelov the staff under pressure. Orelov, in his old age, spared the Tsar's life, feeling no obligation to do so.<ref name="ACTF3">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Fall]]'' - Issue #3</ref>

Nonetheless, the other Assassins continued to support the Bolsheviks. Ultimately, the Assassins would lose control over the Revolution.<ref name="Encyclopedia"/>

'''Pantasilea Baglioni''' (1476 – unknown) was the wife of the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]].

She was introduced to [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] when he visited Bartolomeo, in order to re-establish the relationship between their guilds, and would later go on to helping Ezio manage his [[assassination contracts]] in [[Rome]].

==Biography==
===Battle against the Borgia===
By 1500, Pantasilea was helping her husband manage his [[mercenaries]] in their barracks, the [[Caserma di Alviano]]. While her husband could more commonly be found betting on the matches in the Fight Club downstairs, Pantasilea spent most of her time in the main room of the barracks, dealing with its accounts and its daily operation.

She proved her adept understanding of warfare during her first meeting with Ezio that year, wherein, despite her husband's confident assurances that his battle against the French was going well, Pantasilea quietly informed Ezio of the true situation.

She confided in him that their forces were spread thin due to the simultaneous attacks on two fronts, from the [[France|French]] and the [[House of Borgia|Borgia]]), and advised the Assassin to burn down the nearby [[Borgia towers|Borgia tower]] to relieve some of the pressure on their mercenaries. The move was a success, allowing Bartolomeo's men to focus all their attention on the invading French forces.

Shortly afterwards, Pantasilea commented to Ezio that strategy was equally important in battle to strength, and directed him to check the messages held by [[Pigeon coops|carrier pigeons]], as [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] often sent the names of key [[Templars|Templar]] figures through them. She continued, saying that eliminating those listed would ''"have more of an impact than a battle ever could."''

===Battle against the French===

In 1503, Pantasilea was kidnapped by the [[Octavian de Valois|Baron de Valois]], in order to force the surrender of Bartolomeo. However, Ezio and Bartolomeo, along with twenty mercenaries, infiltrated the [[Castra Praetoria|the Baron's fortress]] by masquerading as French troops that had captured a surrendering Bartolomeo.

Though they successfully entered the camp, they were forced to break their cover when the Baron threatened to shoot Pantasilea, despite Bartolomeo's surrender.

As the battle ensued, the Baron escaped to a courtyard, and held a pistol to Pantasilea's head, threatening to shoot her at the first sign of trouble. However, Ezio managed to assassinate the Baron from above before he pulled the trigger. When Ezio slyly commented that the plan to rescue Pantasilea was of Bartolomeo's construction, despite really being his own, Pantasilea hugged Bartolomeo and said that he was her prince.

==Personality==

Pantasilea was a very strategic woman, often insisting that a well coordinated plan was as good as – if not better than – brute force.

Despite her and her husband having completely different views on battle, their personalities complemented each other. After she was kidnapped, Bartolomeo seemed at a loss of how to reach her, grieving that ''"Pantasilea would know what to do."''

A very understanding woman, Pantasilea often humored her husband when he chose to put on a brave front, and claim that everything was under control when it was not.

==Trivia==
*Bartolomeo had four children by Pantasilea: Lucrezia, Isabella, Porzia and Livio Settimo.
*"Pantasilea" is the Italian equivalent for the name "Penthesilea," who was a Queen of the Amazons that fought and died in the Trojan War. This was an allusion to her and her husband's warlike personalities and background.
*When Bartolomeo called and looked for Pantasilea to first introduce her to Ezio, Ezio joked to try looking for her behind the table. This was a reference to his and Bartolomeo's first meeting in ''[[Assassin's Creed II]]'', when Bartolomeo called and searched for his sword, Bianca, and found it behind a table.
**Additionally, when Ezio was introduced to Pantasilea, he kissed her hand and said that he was charmed to meet her. He also said this previously (albeit in a much more sarcastic manner) upon being introduced to Bianca.
*Pantasilea featured briefly in the animated short, ''[[Assassin's Creed: Ascendance]]''.
*At times, her eyes were shown to have been two different colors throughout ''Brotherhood'', as both blue and brown.

== Description ==
Shortly after the execution of [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze|Giovanni]], [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze]], Ezio Auditore and [[Cristina Vespucci]] met in the streets of [[Florence]].

There, Ezio told Cristina that he wished to provide a proper last rites for his dead father and brothers. Upon arriving at the gallows though, they were found to be empty. Ezio then secured the location of the bodies from a nearby [[guard]], and he and Cristina proceeded to the river.

Finding the bodies under guard, Ezio sneaked around the soldiers and carried the bodies of his kin to a small boat on the Arno River, after promising Cristina that he would not kill any of the guards. His duty to his family finished, Ezio rejoined Cristina, where he told her that he wished to leave the city. Cristina said she wished she could accompany, but that she could not, due to her family. Ezio gave her a pendant, saying ''"we'll always be together"'' before kissing her and departing.

Ezio and Cristina embraced in the streets of Florence and both were sad at the news of the death of Ezio's father and brothers.
