Giovanni was secretly born in [[Rome]] to Lucrezia Borgia, the illegitimate daughter of Pope [[Rodrigo Borgia|Alexander VI]]. Upon his birth, Giovanni was discovered to be malformed, and he was expected to die within a few days. In a drastic attempt to save his assumed child's life, Perotto broke out of prison (in which he was being held due to the discovery of his affair with Lucrezia) and escaped to [[Agnadello]]. There, he knew the Assassins were guarding the Piece of Eden known as [[Shroud of Eden|the Shroud]], which Perotto thought would be able to heal his son.<ref name="ACPL - Perotto Calderon"/>

Upon arriving there, having slain both his brother Assassins and [[House of Borgia|Borgia]] [[Guards|soldiers]] along the way, Perotto asked the Shroud to heal his son, which it did, despite its initial protests. Giovanni was trained to be cruel by both Cesare, and the latter's friend, [[Micheletto Corella]]; though he rejected many of their teachings, and grew to fear and hate them. Since Cesare was often away, Giovanni was allowed to spend time with his "aunt" Lucrezia, who enjoyed their bonding, but was saddened by seeing her son raised in such a harsh environment.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

At times, Giovanni's grandfather would allow him to "play" with the [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple of Eden]], and would take notes when he discovered that Giovanni had the ability to turn his thoughts into reality with the power of the Apple. Simply by willing it, he was able to create the image of an eagle out of thin air.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

Giovanni made use of this skill as a means of defending himself once, when he was five. Upon being taken out for a "lesson" with Micheletto, he witnessed Micheletto kill an old man, simply to teach Giovanni the cruelties of the world. Afraid, Giovanni used the Apple (which he had taken from his grandfather in secret) to create an illusion of Cesare to scare Micheletto. However, when Cesare discovered this, Giovanni was punished.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

Giovanni also made use of another of the Apple's power, albeit accidentally, when he stumbled upon [[Fiora Cavazza]] sneaking around his home, seeking to steal the Piece of Eden for the Assassins. Fearing that he would alert the guards of her presence, Fiora told him to stop and attempted to take the Apple from him. However, she was frozen in place by its power, and was ultimately caught by Cesare, who had been woken by the commotion. Giovanni fearfully asked Cesare what he would do with her, but he simply sent the boy away; calmly telling Giovanni that he would hurt her.<ref name="ACPL - Fiora Cavazza"/>

===Becoming an Assassin===

Eventually, in 1503, Giovanni planned to leave his life of fear behind. After he received a letter from a courier pigeon, sent by an unknown individual, he was even more encouraged to do so. Making sure that he wasn't seen, he went to the meeting place by a fountain, and, as instructed, used his "[[Eagle Vision|other eyes]]" to recognize the individual from the crowd.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

Giovanni followed the individual running across the rooftops, until he finally reached an alleyway, where he was abruptly halted by two thieves, who attempted to rob him. The individual leapt down from above and plunged his [[Hidden Blade]]s into both men, rescuing the boy. The individual then introduced himself as [[Francesco Vecellio]], who turned out to be the former understudy of Perotto.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

Giovanni happily agreed to Francesco's offer to bring him "to live with his Brothers", and was thus taken in and trained into the Assassin Order.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

===Journey to Mexico===

In 1519, Giovanni was secured a position aboard [[Hernán Cortés]] ship, which was to sail towards the New World. Though posing as a chronicler and astrologer, Giovanni had been tasked by the Brotherhood to identify and recover a Piece of Eden from the Aztec city of [[Tenochtitlan]].<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Mexico">''Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy'' - [[Rome: Chapter 4 - Giovanni Borgia]]</ref>

After examining several idols and artifacts, Giovanni finally sensed the presence of the Piece of Eden, recognizing the same "hum" he remembered from the Apple of Eden. He pinpointed the artifact to be a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] in the possession of an Aztec priest, who used it as part of a human sacrificial ritual.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Mexico"/>

Upon returning to Europe in 1520, Giovanni brought the Crystal Skull to [[Bombastus]], a member of the Assassin Order, to discover its purpose. Bombastus was confident that they would successfully uncover its secrets, referring to Giovanni as "the one who talks to these things."<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Mexico"/>

Despite much examination, however, they were unable to discover how to use the Skull. After this, the other members of the Order began to doubt Giovanni's abilities, and merely dismissed the Skull as little more than an ornate treasure.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Mexico"/>

Nevertheless, Giovanni persisted in studying the Skull for about twenty years, and in 1542, received some answers. Upon discovering the Skull glowing with a faint light, he shook it and began to hear words in a foreign language, as well as see visions of a man dressed in Chinese garb. Though he could not understand the speech, he realized the man's intent, and hurried to alert the Brotherhood of this revelation.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Mexico"/>

In 1527, some time after accidentally reading the [[book of Abraham|mysterious tome]] that Bombastus owned, and using it to help craft the [[Philosopher's stone|Philosopher's Stone]], Giovanni confronted Bombastus to ask him further questions. However, the Professor only proclaimed that he could help him no longer, and that the Book held no more answers as it was incomplete.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel">''Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy'' - [[Divine Science: Chapter 1 - Maria Amiel]]</ref>

Thus, Giovanni began to research a means of finding the other half of the Book, with the help of one of Bombastus' apprentices, [[Maria Amiel]]. The two found that the tome was entitled "Divine Science," and had been written by a [[France|French]] alchemist named Nicolas Flamel. They thus traveled together to [[Paris]], France, where Giovanni received permission to consult the Royal library in [[the Louvre]].<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

They tracked a grimoire down to the nephew of Perenelle Flamel, but found that the manuscript was only a translation. On their way back to Basel, Giovanni insisted that they pass by [[Troyes]], though he did not tell Maria why. As Maria lingered by a clothier near Troyes' cathedral, Giovanni vanished from her side, and soon after, she was approached by a man in a tunic marked with a red cross.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

As he began to ask her peculiar questions, Giovanni appeared behind him and ended his life with his Hidden Blade. Though he at first accused Maria of "conspiring with [[the Viper]]," upon seeing her tears, he realized his mistake, and the two returned their attention to their travels.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

Since Giovanni had discovered a report containing their descriptions, he and Maria fled Troyes. In a nearby wood, they were attacked by "[[Templars|Minions of the Cross]]," though Giovanni was able to drive them off; and afterwards, the two were able to avoid further trouble.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

Upon arriving in Basel, they found that Bombastus had gone mad, and had begun burning books and accusing [[doctors]] of unholy practices. Giovanni was forced to restrain him, and later, he and Maria retrieved the first half of the Book from Bombastus' laboratory.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

===Pythagorean Temple===

Some time after, Giovanni discovered a map to the Pythagorean temple, and asked that Maria accompany him. Though he admitted that the previous visitor to the temple had found nothing, he insisted that he knew there was something that still lay hidden within it. Trusting him, Maria agreed, and the two traveled together down into the catacombs.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

Giovanni opened the way for them, rearranging bricks and lighting an urn that lit the room with a trail of fire. Finally, as they entered the [[Pythagorean Vault|last chamber]], it became illuminated with eerie patterns, numbers, and glyphs.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

At that moment, Giovanni fell unconscious, and when he woke, his face had been altered, startling Maria. He then spoke in a distant voice that was not his, but appeared to be from an entity far older; one that called itself "[[Consus]], the Erudite God."<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

Giovanni was a very gracious and confident nobleman, who often spoke lightheartedly, and teased his friends. Despite his cheerful nature, he also had something of a temper, once shouting at and threatening Bombastus for not answering his questions.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

He was also quite serious in his work as an Assassin, often becoming withdrawn and moody when concentrating on his assignments. Though protective of his allies, he once assaulted Maria, merely out of the suspicion that she had been conspiring with the Templars.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

From an early age, Giovanni suffered several [[bleeding Effect|bleeding effect]]-like symptoms, likely as a result of being healed by the Shroud. He would often dream of the memories of Assassins past, including those of Perotto, and [[Marcus Junius Brutus]]. Because of these hallucinations, he once almost stabbed Cesare while sleepwalking, thinking himself to be Brutus, and his uncle to be [[Gaius Julius Caesar]]. However, he was caught and subsequently punished by Micheletto.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

For possibly the same reasons, throughout his childhood, Giovanni would speak to a mystical being called Consus, whom no one else could see. Consus acted as his guardian, encouraging him to join the Assassins, and eventually seeming to "possess" him in the Pythagorean Temple.<ref name="ACPL - Giovanni Borgia - Rome"/>

After meeting each other in 1527, Giovanni and Maria became inseparable, growing close over their travels to Paris and back to Basel. He protected her from brigands who once attempted to rob them, as well as Templars who attacked them as they fled Troyes.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

After Maria accidentally spoke with one of Giovanni's assassination targets in Troyes, he began to suspect her, holding a blade to her throat and demanding to know why she was conspiring with his enemy. When she began to cry, he realized his mistake, and after a moment, the two kissed, and admitted their feelings for one another.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

Several years afterwards, Giovanni married her. Though Maria only later found out about Giovanni's allegiance to the Assassin Order, she nevertheless supported him in his assignments, even accompanying him through the catacombs into the Pythagorean Temple.<ref name="ACPL - Maria Amiel"/>

==Biography==
===Imprisonment by Templars===
The [[Templars|Templar Order]] located Roberts sometime in 1715 and took him to [[Havana]], where he was imprisoned in the estate of [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]]. Torres, his fellow Templars [[Woodes Rogers]] and [[Julien du Casse]], along with [[Edward Kenway]] – under the guise of the turncoat [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Duncan Walpole]] – met Roberts at the Havana docks before taking him to the prison.

During the transit, he managed to break free when the Templars were attacked by the Assassins sent by [[Ah Tabai]], but was chased down by Kenway and escorted to Torres' estate. He was moved later that same day, but escaped soon after and took to the sea.

===Slaving in Kingston and Príncipe===
In 1717, the Templars learned that Roberts had been recaptured by a [[Kingston]]-based [[Slavery|slaver]] named [[Laurens Prins]], who had indeed encountered Roberts, but had in fact employed him in the slaving business, allowing him to stay in his Kingston estate before planning to sell him out to the Templars.

Kenway, acting on information given by his fellow pirates, confronted Torres and devised a plan to have the Templar master meet with Prins in Kingston, where the pirate captain would then locate and free Roberts. However, Prins detected Kenway and the Assassin [[Mary Read]] and managed to flee back to his mansion.

When Kenway killed Prins in his gardens, Roberts appeared, declaring that Prins had been his employer instead of his jailer. Shooting an alarm bell to alert guards to Kenway's presence, Roberts escaped once more and commandeered Prins' ship, the ''[[Princess]]''. It made regular trips between Kingston and the African nation of [[Príncipe]] roughly every eight weeks. Roberts eventually went into hiding in the Principe jungle after the ship was captured by Templars in late 1718.

===Piracy===

When Kenway found Roberts hiding in the African jungle in 1719, he struck a deal with the Sage to free his imprisoned crew in exchange for Roberts leading him to the First Civilization site known as the [[Observatory]]. Kenway killed the Templars in Príncipe, freed the crew, and recaptured the ''Princess''. Roberts gave a speech to his crew declaring his intentions to sail as a pirate, and the two captains sailed back to the West Indies.

In the following months, Roberts made a name for himself, taking ships and making a fortune. He called himself "Black Bart" and kept his crew to high standards with an [[Pirate code of Bartholomew Roberts|eleven-part creed]]; it discouraged gambling on the ship, required the men to keep their equipment in good working order, and provided that pirates should live their lives as fully as possible and die before they became weak and old, vulnerable to having their power stripped from them: a philosophy he summed up with the words "a merry life and a short one."

Roberts and Kenway met again off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, where they infiltrated a Portuguese camp to steal First Civilization [[blood vials]] that had been imbued with the blood of both pirates and Templars alike. After completing the heist and commandeering the Portuguese flagship, Roberts renamed it the ''[[Royal Fortune]]''. Kenway killed [[Benjamin Hornigold]] to ensure the pirates were not followed before meeting Roberts again at [[Long Bay]], on the northern shore of [[Jamaica]]. The two went ashore with four of Roberts's crew in search of the Observatory.

Edward cleared the jungle of the protective [[Guardians]] while Roberts and his crew followed until they reached the Observatory's door. Upon opening it with an incantation, he suddenly shot his four crewmen dead, telling Kenway he did it to save them from the insanity that was sure to follow if they entered the building, whereas he believed Edward could handle the secrets stored within. To this, the two walked inside.

Roberts informed Kenway of his past as a Sage and his new life as a pirate, including his pirate's creed, as they made their way deeper and deeper into the Observatory. He even commented on it being in much worse condition than what it had been when he had last seen it eighty millennia ago, although he still knew how to deactivate the building's security measures once inside.

In the Observatory's antechamber, Roberts showed Kenway exactly what its purpose was, using the blood vials they had taken from the Portuguese and inserting them into a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] set into the centerpiece of a golden armillary sphere. Soon, the machine began to operate, projecting the vision of the individual whose blood was in the vial - a perfect method of spying on any individual in the world.

Although Kenway agreed with Roberts that the Observatory would be too powerful for the Templars to have control of, Roberts had a different plan on how to stop them - by removing the skull, rendering the Observatory inoperable. He then kicked Edward over a ledge and into the water below, remarking that there was no part of his creed that forbade betrayal.

Roberts returned to the shore, but was surprised to see a severely wounded Kenway struggling across the beach. After a brief fight, Kenway collapsed; the Sage commented that it would be more profitable to claim the bounty on Kenway's head than to kill him, following which he made the sale and disappeared.

===Death===
Roberts retreated back to Príncipe for the next two years, before Kenway tracked him down. Roberts attempted to flee aboard HMS ''Royal Fortune'', but the ship was soon disabled by the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' and boarded. On board, Bartholomew Roberts and Edward Kenway – the last of the pirate captains – fought one another, with Kenway emerging the eventual victor, having impaled Roberts with his [[Rope darts|rope dart]].

Remorsefully, Roberts remarked that perhaps Kenway was indeed the one [[Juno|she]] had sought, and that he wished he only had the time to open the door to the [[Grand Temple|Temple]], which confused Edward. He then died, after requesting that Kenway destroy his body to prevent the Templars acquiring it, before Kenway could gain any more answers. Kenway then complied with his wishes.
