The Modern Times is the time period the Assassin's Creed games actually take place in.

Description
The war between Assassins and Templars still continues, although the Assassins have greatly decreased in numbers and gone mostly into hiding, the Templars have grown and are publicly disguised. One of these disguises is the company Abstergo. It is still uncertain just how much the Templars have grown in influence and how many organizations like Abstergo exist.

Earth in 2012 is a drastically different world than we would recognize today. If you read Vidic's E-mails you will learn that a 'Second Plague' has struck Africa, leaving 96% of Africans dead in a three month period and the continent nearly uninhabited. Another e-mail states that Mexico is increasing its border security to prevent more illegal American immigrants from entering the country and inciting violence between them and Mexican troops. These border brawls have lead to the deaths of 300 and leaving 1000 injured. The motion-picture industry has collapsed, as the last film studio has closed due to piracy and the rising prominence of video games. Abstergo Industries is being investigated for manipulating a small town's water supply in order to test a synthetic drug referred to as New Fluoride. This has pressured Abstergo to launch their satellite on December 21st to avoid having their assets frozen. The U.S. and E.U. are constructing jointly owned oil platforms in the Weddell Sea. 'Hurricane Season' has become a yearly occurrence as hurricane duration, frequency, strength, and location have increased to the point where most coastal cities must now live in constant fear of these devastating storms.

At the end of Assassin's Creed II, it is revealed that the earth is possibly going to experience a geomagnetic reversal in the near future. This is revealed by Minerva at the end of Assassin's Creed II. Note that some of the pictures shown by Minerva appear to be Mayan, and December 2012 is when the Mayans supposedly predicted the world would end. The game's storyline clearly makes use of the modern-day apocalypse idea involving the reversal of the magnetic fields on Earth, leading to a period where solar radiation could easily penetrate to the surface and cause quite a few troubles for life. It is possible that the Pieces of Eden will be used to thwart this disaster in the third installment.

It is notable that, although in futuristic 2012, neither Abstergo's guards nor the Assassins use guns in Assassin's Creed II, instead using advanced weapon sticks resembling swords and hidden blades, respectively. When, however, the Assassins attack Abstergo in Assassins Creed, shooting can be heard. The assumed reason that the Abstergo guards were using the weapon sticks was to not kill Desmond, Lucy, Rebecca, or Shaun, but rather knock them unconscious and capture them.

It is suspected that the part of Assassin's Creed in the present takes place in Italy, considering that the outside of the hideout looks almost exactly like Florence in Ezio's time, and that the underground parking lot in Abstergo and the Assassin's hideout have signs that have words in Italian, including "sezione", which means "section" in English. In Abstergo's garage there are signs in Italian saying "Parcheggio reservato" meaning "Reserved parking" and "Altezza totale" meaning "Altitude". In the end of Assassins Creed II Lucy says that they can hide out in a cabin north and Rebecca later says that it's a long drive meaning that the cabin is possibly in Austria or Germany or Switzerland.
Doctor Warren Vidic is a member of the Knights Templar and scientist, employed by Abstergo Industries in the early 21st Century; he is also the head of research for the genetic memory and Animus projects.

Biography
Subject 17
In 2012 Warren Vidic holds the position of head of genetic research at Abstergo Industries; part of his role including looking after test subjects for his Animus project. That year, he authorised the capture of the seventeenth test subject; a bartender named Desmond Miles. At first, Vidic found the new test subject both unwilling and, subconsciously, not confident enough to explore his ancestor's memories. After making it clear to Desmond that failure to cooperate would entail a medically-induced coma and abandonment to die once finished, Vidic managed to gain his cooperation.

Despite Desmond's cooperation, however, progress was slow. Vidic's assistant, Lucy Stillman, was overly protective of Desmond's health, and insisted on only short stints within the Animus, less their latest test subject begin to hallucinate as the previous one did. Disheartened but compliant, Vidic ordered Desmond to his quarters and then left the laboratory. The next day, Desmond awoke to Vidic standing over him, eager to progress with the days work. More cheerful, Vidic humored Desmond's curiosity and willingly answered some of his questions, but eventually insisted on him re-entering the Animus.

As the week went on, and Desmond made progress within the Animus, Vidic's mood swung between calm and collected, and irritable and ignorant. During one such day, whilst looking out over the skyline outside his laboratory, Vidic unknowingly left his access pen in plain sight; Desmond managed to acquire it without Vidic becoming aware. Towards the end of the week, as Desmond began to approach the conclusion of his journey within the memories, Vidic started to become much more insistent on a quick closure.

After witnessing the death of Al Mualim and activation of the Piece of Eden in Desmond's genetic memories, Vidic recorded the map displayed within the memory, commenting "We've got it". As Desmond awoke, he saw three suited individuals in the laboratory's conference room. The three begun discussing with Vidic the results, and insisted upon Desmond's "retirement"; Vidic agreed, but was cut short by Lucy, who insisted that Desmond's use had not yet ended. The two argued to the point of Vidic claim that Lucy was undermining his authority, and Vidic stubbornly agreed in Lucy's assessment to let Desmond live; to "leave nothing to chance". Ordering Desmond back into his room, the Doctor left the laboratory.

After the escape
The next day, Vidic received word of Desmond's escape, and the assistance Lucy had given him in executing it. The Templar quickly set about tracking down the Assassins, and within two days had accomplished his goal and set about capturing the two.

Locating the hideout, Vidic took a contingent of Abstergo security guards to apprehend Desmond and Lucy, arriving just as Desmond finished exploring the memories of another of his ancestors – Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Cutting off the Assassins escape Vidic attempted to coerce Desmond into coming peacefully whilst berating Lucy for her apparent betrayal. The two rejected him, and so Vidic ordered his guards to apprehend them. Minutes later, following the death or incapacitation of his entourage, Vidic was confronted by Desmond at the rear of his vehicle. Commenting that the Assassins should enjoy their temporary victory, he fled, leaving the Assassins to escape northwards.

Personality and Characteristics
Dr. Warren Vidic was a hardened scientist and fanatical member of the Knights Templar during the early 21st Century. Although an intelligent man, Vidic was somewhat forgetful, and would often need reminding of passcodes and the likes; he also tended to leave his access key on display, and had on more than one occasion lost it outright.

An atheist, Vidic believed wholeheartedly in the non-existence of God, suggesting that many religious artifacts such as the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant and the Apple of Eden were simply technology left behind by Those Who Came Before as gifts to the Templars; a belief which he knew to be fact. Ruthless, yet clumsy, Vidic had a short temper and showed little care for the welfare of his test subjects.

On at least one occasion, Vidic's insistence that his test subject remain in the Animus for dangerously long periods of time, sometimes even whole days, led to suicide. Despite this, Vidic was unfazed, merely requesting another test subject. This seventeenth test subject – Desmond Miles – eventually succeeded where his predecessors had failed, and obtained the map indicating the location of the Pieces of Eden. This success, however, did little to ingratiate him in the eyes of Dr. Vidic, who agreed with the assessment of his superiors that Desmond should be executed. His mind only changed after being convinced by his assistant, Lucy Stillman, that Desmond could still be of further use.

Warren's relationship with Lucy was frosty at best. Despite saving her life and taking her under his wing, Warren seemed to barely tolerate her presence, and found her insistence on prolonging the project irritating. Despite this however, he did care for Lucy, and would withhold information from her that he knew would force his hand had she known; such as the circumstances surrounding the death of her friend Leila Marino. Following her and Desmond's escape, Vidic located and intercepted the two assassins as they attempted to flee their hideout; he commented on her treachery and how she had helped him cause pain and misery to his test subjects.

Trivia
*His first name means "Guarded" or "Of la Varenne" (La Varenne is a suburb of Paris, indicating this is where he may have come from) in Old English.
*Although his last name Vidic is a common Serbian surname (Serbian latinic: Vidić, pronounced: ˈʋiditɕ) and roughly translates to "the one who sees" or "of those who see", it was never stated that he is Serbian.
Despite this however, he did care for Lucy, and would withhold information from her that he knew would force his hand had she known; such as the circumstances surrounding the death of her friend Leila Marino. Following her and Desmond's escape, Vidic located and intercepted the two assassins as they attempted to flee their hideout; he commented on her treachery, and how she had helped him cause pain and misery to his test subjects.

Subject 16 was an individual kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and forced into the Animus before Desmond Miles. A descendant of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, he is related to Desmond Miles, as indicated by portions of their DNA matching in Assassin's Creed II; it is also revealed that he had an ancestor at the Battle of Gettysburg, in the Roman forum and connected with a Queen Isabella.

Biography
Life at Abstergo
The individual known only as Subject 16 was captured by the Templar-front organization Abstergo Industries at some point during the 20th or 21st Century for use in the genetic memory recall program. Kept within the Abstergo Laboratory at all times by Warren Vidic, 16 was kept connected to the Animus for dangerously long periods, sometimes even days at a time. This led to 16 suffering from a severe condition known as the "bleeding effect".

Suffering the bleeding effect, 16 began to explore the memories of his ancestors without the use of the Animus , however his inability to actually control these visions forced Subject 16 into a downward spiral of insanity, eventually culminating in his suicide.

Before his death, 16 was forced by Abstergo to explore the memories of an ancestor named Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who the Templars knew had located the Vault during his lifetime; 16 never relived the memories of his ancestor visiting the Vault. Draining his body of its blood to paint several cryptic puzzles upon the floor and walls of the Abstergo Laboratory, 16 committed suicide to prevent the Templars reaching their goals.

Legacy
Following his death, the Templars were left without the location of the Vault, but the knowledge that an ancestor of Ezio’s – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – had once held a Piece of Eden. Knowing this, Abstergo kidnapped yet another descendant of Ezio and Altaïr, Desmond Miles. During his incarceration, Desmond spoke often with Dr. Vidic’s assistant Lucy Stillman about many things, including his predecessor; accessing private e-mails, he learned even more. Later still, following Desmond’s escape from Abstergo and the beginning of his journeys through the memories of Ezio Auditore the Assassins learned that Subject 16 had managed to hack the Abstergo Animus before his death, and placed twenty encrypted files, called glyphs, throughout the memories.

Decrypting all twenty files, the assassins’ were rewarded with a genetic memory dated "date classified BCE". The video, what Subject 16 claimed to be “The Truth” showed what appeared to be two free-runners fleeing with a Piece of Eden in hand; they revealed themselves to be named Adam and Eve.

Trivia
*In the non-canon Assassin’s Creed - French Graphic Novel, Subject 16 appears alive and is referred to as "Michael".
*Many of the Glyphs have hidden messages in them. All of the decoded ones are stated in this page.
*It is possible that Subject 16 could have been part of the Assassins, as he refers to the Assassin symbol as "our mark" during one of the Glyph puzzles.
