Kesegowaase was born in 1730 in the territory of the {{Wiki|Maliseet|Wolastoqiyik}} tribe, around modern day {{Wiki|New Brunswick}}. As tensions arose between the [[United Kingdom|British]] and his people, Kesegowaase and other members of his tribe became [[mercenaries]] for the [[French Army]]. Around this time, Kesegowaase began corresponding with [[Achilles Davenport]], the [[Mentor]] of the Colonial Assassin Brotherhood. He would receive letters from Achilles' protégé [[Liam O'Brien]].<ref name="RG"/>

In 1746, Kesegowaase met Achilles and Liam as they were fighting for the French on behalf of the Brotherhood. Impressed by Kesegowaase's determination, the two invited him to join the Assassin Order. In 1749, Kesegowaase met [[Shay Cormac]] and would serve as one of his instructors. He would also gain the loyalty of warriors from every French-aligned tribe, as well as several trappers, hunters and scouts, providing the Brotherhood with a valuable force.<ref name="RG"/>

In March 1752, Kesegowaase taught Shay the finer points of hunting and how to craft holsters for his pistols, while also criticizing him for his tardiness. Kesegowaase would later meet with his fellow Assassins to discuss the [[Templars]]' progress on the [[Precursor box]], noting that they had sought information about the artifact from many tribes. Around this time, Kesegowaase also reported that the Templar [[James Wardrop]] had evicted several tribes from their original homes.<ref name="RG"/>

In early 1756, Shay returned from [[Lisbon]], having unintentionally caused an [[1755 Lisbon earthquake|earthquake]] there while attempting to recover a [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]]. Determined to keep the Assassins away from any Precursor sites, Shay stole the [[Voynich manuscript|Manuscript]] in Achilles' possession. With Shay being caught in the act, Kesegowaase and the other Assassins of the [[Davenport Homestead]] attempted to kill the former. Although Shay was eventually cornered, he jumped off a cliff, leading the Assassins to believe him dead.<ref name="RG"/>

The Assassins initially believed the Manuscript lost, but learned that it was in the hands of the [[Templars|Templar]] [[George Monro]]. Seeking to take it back, Achilles sent Liam and Kesegowaase after Monro.<ref name="RG"/>

In August 1757, the French Army under [[Louis-Joseph de Montcalm]] and a large force of native warriors under Kesegowaase's command [[Siege of Fort William Henry|besieged]] [[Fort William Henry]]. After several days of bombardement, and no sight of reinforcements from [[William Johnson]], the British garrison under the command of Monro surrendered to Montcalm. Thanks to the latter, the British were allowed to surrender while keeping their arms and colors. The natives did not understand the terms of the surrender. Exploiting this, Kesegowaase planned to ambush the British, kill Monro and take the Manuscript back.<ref name="RG"/>

On the morning of 10 August, Kesegowaase and the natives under his command ambushed Monro's column, breaking the terms of the surrender in the process. At this time, Shay, now a Templar ally, arrived. Upon being informed of the events by [[Jack Weeks]], Shay managed to rescue Monro and the remainder of his men. As they headed for Shay's ship, the ''[[Morrigan]]'', Kesegowaase appeared. Shocked by Shay's survival, Kesegowaase ordered his men to attack the British column.<ref name="RG"/>

The column fought off the attackers, and continued onwards slowly, while Shay eliminated any potential ambushers. As the British boarded the ''Morrigan'', Kesegowaase and his men attempted to follow, but Weeks threw a powder barrel at them while Shay shot it. The explosion severely scarred Kesegowaase's face, and his men pulled him away.<ref name="RG"/>

===Attack on Albany===

After learning of Shay's survival and defection to the Templars, Achilles made him a target of the Brotherhood. Having failed to kill Shay and Monro at William Henry, Kesegowaase prepared to attack [[Albany]]. He sent his men to threaten the British-aligned [[Oneida]] village of [[Orenda]] in order to acquire an ancient set of native armor and deter them from furhter assisting the British. In anticipation of the attack, Shay managed to defeat the French troops attacking the British in the area and also liberated the Oneida village from Kesegowaase's men.<ref name="RG"/>

On 3 November, Kesegowaase and his men attacked Albany, plundering the town and attacking the nearby [[Fort Frederick]]. Shay arrived in time to defend the fort from the attacking Assassins, and instructed Monro to take the Manuscript to the ''Morrigan'' while he defended Fort Frederick.<ref name="RG"/>

As Liam set off to assassinate Monro and retrieve the Manuscript, Kesegowaase infiltrated the fort in order to distract Shay. Shay was able to mortally wound Kesegowaase with a [[Puckle gun]], and after a brief struggle he held the Assassin up against a wall. In his dying words, Kesegowaase scolded Shay for having betrayed the Assassins, and told him that he was too late to save Monro, with Liam already on his way to kill him. As Kesegowaase died, an enraged Shay tried to rescue Monro, but true to the former's word, he was too late.<ref name="RG"/>

Having grown up close to nature, Kesegwaase was a stoic individual, keeping a calm demanour at most times and rarely speaking much. Because of his Abenaki roots, Kesegowaase also held a deep respect for nature, reminding Shay not to waste hunting spoils.<ref name="RG"/>

However, Kesegowaase could also be cunning and ruthless. After the British had surrendered at Fort William Henry, Kesegowaase and his men ambushed and massacred them, breaking the terms of the surrender. Afterwards, he sent his men to hold an Oneida village hostage in order to acquire a set of ancient armor, and they would later pillage Albany during their attack on the town. Despite the brutality of Kesegowaase's actions, his fellow Assassins did not intervene, believing them necessary towards the completion of their goals.<ref name="RG"/>

Kesegowaase strongly believed in the Assassin cause, obeying Achilles without question. Upon learning of Shay's defection to the Templars, he was determined to kill him. Even in the face of death, Kesegowaase attempted to attack Shay, scolding him for his betrayal and mockingly insinuating Monro's imminent death.<ref name="RG"/>

Even before joining the Assassins, Kesegowaase was highly skilled in hunting and fishing, as well as other survival methods. He had also gained experience from working as a scout and mercenary for the French, and was a skilled [[Freerunning|freerunner]], navigating the trees of North America with ease. He was also capable of performing the traditional Assassin's [[Leap of Faith]].<ref name="RG"/>

Kesegowaase's Assassin outfit consisted of traditional Abenaki clothing, and he wore a buckskin leather hood and shawl adorned with [[feathers]]. He also wore leather boots and a red Assassin sash, as well as red face paint. Kesegowaase was equipped with [[Hidden Blade]]s, and was capable of various assassination techniques. In combat, he wielded a [[Tomahawks|tomahawk]] and a [[Firearms|pistol]] with great skill, making him a highly dangerous opponent.<ref name="RG"/>

John Roberts was born in 1682 in Castell Newydd Bach. It is commonly assumed that he went to sea around the age of thirteen, eventually becoming an experienced sailor.

===Imprisonment by Templars===
The [[Templars|Templar Order]] located Roberts sometime in 1715, in [[Spain|Spanish]] lands in South America, and subsequently took him to [[Havana]]. The [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Mentor]] [[Ah Tabai]] caught wind of the capture and sent his finest student, [[Duncan Walpole]], to free Roberts and bring him to the Assassin city of [[Tulum]]. However, Walpole had secretly turned traitor to the Brotherhood and abandoned his mission.

Roberts eventually arrived in Havana, where he was imprisoned in the estate of [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]]. Torres, his fellow Templars [[Woodes Rogers]] and [[Julien du Casse]], along with [[Edward Kenway]] – who had killed Walpole and taken his identity – met Roberts at the Havana docks before taking him to the prison.

In transit, he managed to break free when the Templars were attacked by Assassins sent by Ah Tabai, but was chased down by Kenway and escorted to Torres' estate. He was moved later that same day, but escaped soon after and took to the sea.

In 1717, the Templars learned that Roberts had been recaptured by a [[Kingston]]-based [[Slavery|slaver]] named [[Laurens Prins]]. Prins had indeed encountered Roberts, but had actually employed him, allowing him to stay in his Kingston estate while planning to sell him out to the Templars.

Kenway, acting on information given by his fellow pirates, confronted Torres and devised a plan to have the Templar Grand Master meet with Prins in Kingston and lead Kenway to Roberts. However, Prins detected Kenway and the Assassin [[Mary Read]] and managed to flee back to his mansion.

When Kenway infiltrated Prins' estate and killed him in his gardens, Roberts appeared, declaring that Prins had been his employer instead of his jailer. Shooting an alarm bell to alert guards to Kenway's presence, Roberts escaped once more. Afterwards, he took to working aboard a merchant ship of [[Barbados|Barbadian]] origin.

Roberts eventually began working on board a slave ship called the ''[[Princess]]'', captained by Abraham Plumb; this ship made regular trips between Kingston and the Portuguese colony of [[Príncipe]] roughly every eight weeks. When the ship was captured by the Welsh pirate [[Howell Davis]], Roberts chose to become a pirate himself. On 19 June 1719, Davis was killed in a Templar-orchestrated ambush at Príncipe, forcing Roberts to go into hiding.

Approached by Kenway once again, the two struck a deal: Kenway would free Roberts' imprisoned crew and kill the Templars [[John Cockram]] and [[Josiah Burgess]], in exchange for Roberts leading him to the [[First Civilization]] site known as the [[Observatory]]; Kenway did as he was asked, recapturing the ''Princess'' in the process. Roberts then gave a speech to his crew, declaring his intentions to sail as a pirate, and the two captains returned to the West Indies.

In the following months, Roberts made a name for himself by taking ships and making a fortune. He kept his crew to high standards with an [[Pirate code of Bartholomew Roberts|eleven-part creed]]; it discouraged gambling on the ship, required the men to keep their equipment in good working order, and provided that pirates should live their lives as fully as possible and die before they became weak and old, vulnerable to having their power stripped from them: a philosophy he summed up with the words "a merry life and a short one."

Roberts and Kenway met again off the coast of the [[Yucatán Peninsula]], where they infiltrated a Portuguese camp to steal First Civilization [[Blood vials|crystal vials]] that had been imbued with the blood of both pirates and Templars alike. After completing the heist and commandeering the Portuguese flagship, ''Nosso Senhor da Compreensão'', Roberts renamed her to the ''[[Royal Fortune]]''. Afterwards, Kenway killed his former comrade [[Benjamin Hornigold]], who had allied himself with the Templars, to ensure the pirates were not followed, before meeting Roberts again at [[Long Bay]], on the northern shore of [[Jamaica]]. The two went ashore with four of Roberts's crew in search of the Observatory.

Edward cleared the jungle of its protective [[Guardians]] while Roberts and his crew followed until they reached the Observatory's door. Upon opening it with an incantation, Roberts suddenly shot his four crewmen dead, telling Kenway he did it to save them from the insanity that was sure to follow if they entered the building. However, he believed that Edward could handle the secrets stored within, and instructed him to take up the case of blood vials before they made their way inside.

Roberts informed Kenway of his past as a Sage and his new life as a pirate, including his pirate's creed, as they made their way deeper into the Observatory. He commented on the complex being in much worse condition than what it had been when he last saw it eighty millennia ago, although he still knew how to deactivate the building's security measures once inside.

In the Observatory's antechamber, Roberts showed Kenway exactly what its purpose was, using the blood vials they had taken from the Portuguese and inserting them into a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] set into the centerpiece of a golden armillary sphere. Soon, the machine began to operate, projecting the vision and hearing of the individual whose blood was in the vial - a near perfect method of spying on anyone in the world; this was demonstrated as both Roberts and Kenway surveyed through the eyes and ears of [[Jack Rackham]] and Woodes Rogers.

Although Kenway agreed with Roberts that the Observatory would be too powerful for the Templars to have control of, Roberts had a different plan on how to stop them - by removing the skull, rendering the Observatory inoperable. Though Edward had hoped to work with Roberts and use the device to increase their wealth, the Sage had other ideas, knocking him into the water below. Revealing that he had only used Kenway to get to the Observatory and acquire the Crystal Skull, Roberts declared Edward's usefulness to be at an end and sealed him inside the temple.

Roberts returned to the shore and ordered his crew to subdue the ''[[Jackdaw]] ''just as an injured Kenway made his way out of the Observatory. Though Edward fought back against the pirates, he eventually collapsed from his injuries just as his ship and crew sailed away. Fearing that he would be too dangerous to keep on his crew, Roberts decided to turn Edward over to the British authorities and collect the large bounty on his head.

Over the next two years Roberts captured hundreds of ships, earning the attention of both the British and [[Spanish Navy|Spanish navies]] as well as the Templars; he was forced to retreat to Príncipe, where he was found by Kenway. Roberts attempted to flee aboard the ''Royal Fortune'', keeping the ''Jackdaw'' at bay with mortar fire and fire barrels, before moving into open waters where Spanish and British forces engaged him.

Eventually the ''Royal Fortune'' was disabled by the ''Jackdaw'' and boarded. There, Bartholomew Roberts and Edward Kenway fought one another, with Kenway emerging the eventual victor, having impaled Roberts with a [[Rope darts|rope dart]].

Roberts first noted the aptness of his motto before remarking that he may have misjudged Kenway, and perhaps he was indeed the one '[[Juno|she]]' had sought. Roberts expressed regret that he did not have the time to open the door to the [[Grand Temple|Temple]], confusing Edward, who demanded he make some sense. Roberts requested that Edward destroy his body in order to prevent the Templars from gaining anything from it, and passed away. Edward then complied with his final request.

Roberts eventually began working on board a slave ship called the ''[[Princess]]'', captained by Abraham Plumb; this ship made regular trips between Kingston and the Portuguese colony of [[Príncipe]] roughly every eight weeks. When the ship was captured by the Welsh pirate [[Howell Davis]], Roberts chose to become a pirate himself. On 19 June 1719, Davis was killed in a Templar-orchestrated ambush at Príncipe, forcing Roberts to go into hiding.

Approached by Kenway once again, the two struck a deal: Kenway would free Roberts' imprisoned crew and kill the Templars [[John Cockram]] and [[Josiah Burgess]], in exchange for Roberts leading him to the [[First Civilization]] site known as the [[Observatory]]; Kenway did as he was asked, recapturing the ''Princess'' in the process. Roberts then gave a speech to his crew, declaring his intentions to sail as a pirate, and the two captains returned to the West Indies.

In the following months, Roberts made a name for himself by taking ships and making a fortune. He kept his crew to high standards with an [[Pirate code of Bartholomew Roberts|eleven-part creed]]; it discouraged gambling on the ship, required the men to keep their equipment in good working order, and provided that pirates should live their lives as fully as possible and die before they became weak and old, vulnerable to having their power stripped from them: a philosophy he summed up with the words "a merry life and a short one."

Roberts and Kenway met again off the coast of the [[Yucatán Peninsula]], where they infiltrated a Portuguese camp to steal First Civilization [[Blood vials|crystal vials]] that had been imbued with the blood of both pirates and Templars alike. After completing the heist and commandeering the Portuguese flagship, ''Nosso Senhor da Compreensão'', Roberts renamed her to the ''[[Royal Fortune]]''. Afterwards, Kenway killed his former comrade [[Benjamin Hornigold]], who had allied himself with the Templars, to ensure the pirates were not followed, before meeting Roberts again at [[Long Bay]], on the northern shore of [[Jamaica]]. The two went ashore with four of Roberts's crew in search of the Observatory.

Edward cleared the jungle of its protective [[Guardians]] while Roberts and his crew followed until they reached the Observatory's door. Upon opening it with an incantation, Roberts suddenly shot his four crewmen dead, telling Kenway he did it to save them from the insanity that was sure to follow if they entered the building. However, he believed that Edward could handle the secrets stored within, and instructed him to take up the case of blood vials before they made their way inside.

Roberts informed Kenway of his past as a Sage and his new life as a pirate, including his pirate's creed, as they made their way deeper into the Observatory. He commented on the complex being in much worse condition than what it had been when he last saw it eighty millennia ago, although he still knew how to deactivate the building's security measures once inside.

In the Observatory's antechamber, Roberts showed Kenway exactly what its purpose was, using the blood vials they had taken from the Portuguese and inserting them into a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] set into the centerpiece of a golden armillary sphere. Soon, the machine began to operate, projecting the vision and hearing of the individual whose blood was in the vial - a near perfect method of spying on anyone in the world; this was demonstrated as both Roberts and Kenway surveyed through the eyes and ears of [[Jack Rackham]] and Woodes Rogers.

Although Kenway agreed with Roberts that the Observatory would be too powerful for the Templars to have control of, Roberts had a different plan on how to stop them - by removing the skull, rendering the Observatory inoperable. Though Edward had hoped to work with Roberts and use the device to increase their wealth, the Sage had other ideas, knocking him into the water below. Revealing that he had only used Kenway to get to the Observatory and acquire the Crystal Skull, Roberts declared Edward's usefulness to be at an end and sealed him inside the temple.

Roberts returned to the shore and ordered his crew to subdue the ''Jackdaw ''just as an injured Kenway made his way out of the Observatory. Though Edward fought back against the pirates, he eventually collapsed from his injuries just as his ship and crew sailed away. Fearing that he would be too dangerous to keep on his crew, Roberts decided to turn Edward over to the British authorities and collect the large bounty on his head.

Over the next two years Roberts captured hundreds of ships, earning the attention of both the British and [[Spanish Navy|Spanish navies]] as well as the Templars; he was forced to retreat to Príncipe, where he was found by Kenway. Roberts attempted to flee aboard the ''Royal Fortune'', keeping the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' at bay with mortar fire and fire barrels, before moving into open waters where Spanish and British forces engaged him.

Eventually the ''Royal Fortune'' was disabled by the ''Jackdaw'' and boarded. There, Bartholomew Roberts and Edward Kenway fought one another, with Kenway emerging the eventual victor, having impaled Roberts with a [[Rope darts|rope dart]].

Roberts first noted the aptness of his motto before remarking that he may have misjudged Kenway, and perhaps he was indeed the one '[[Juno|she]]' had sought. Roberts expressed regret that he did not have the time to open the door to the [[Grand Temple|Temple]], confusing Edward, who demanded he make some sense. Roberts requested that Edward destroy his body in order to prevent the Templars from gaining anything from it, and passed away. Edward then complied with his final request.

Weeks later, Mary rendezvoused with Edward near the Assassin stronghold on Tulum, where he angrily berated her for forcing him to sneak through hostile territory, past the Assassin sentries.<ref name="AC4"/>

Though the Assassin Mentor, Ah Tabai, was furious with Edward for his ignorant collaboration with the Templars and killing the Assassins in [[Havana]], Mary calmly informed him of Edward's possession of "the sense" and requested Edward be allowed inside an important Mayan temple.<ref name="AC4"/>

After claiming he would recognize the [[Sages|Sage]], [[Bartholomew Roberts]], if he saw the man again, Edward was permitted into the ruin. Mary explained the nature of [[the Creed]] to Edward while leading him to a central antechamber, but was ultimately dissatisfied with his interpretation; although Edward took an interest in the Creed's second clause, Mary asserted that he did not actually understand what it meant. She also revealed that the Assassins had targeted Edward for assassination following his actions in Havana, and that it was only on her request that they had relented.<ref name="AC4"/>

At the center of the temple, they eventually unlocked a bust of the Sage, which Edward confirmed exactly resembled Roberts. Returning to confirm their discovery with Ah Tabai, Mary and Edward found that British soldiers had taken the compound, capturing many Assassins and Edward's crew. After fighting off the British, Mary spotted [[Laurens Prins]], a [[Netherlands|Dutch]] slaver and an elusive assassination target, leaving the area by ship.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary was prepared to assassinate her two targets, but Edward restrained her, urging her to wait until Prins led them to Roberts, whom the slaver held prisoner.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary reluctantly consented to go along with his plan. However, Prins detected them, forcing the two to run. Mary attempted to assassinate Prins against Edward's wishes, but he forcibly prevented her from doing so, insisting they try to use Prins to reach Roberts again. Enraged, Mary nonetheless agreed to rendezvous with Edward at Prins' manor, demanding he assist with the assassination.<ref name="AC4"/>

That night, the two met atop a windmill off Prins' property. Surveying the manor, Mary noted that it would take more than stealth for them to reach Prins. She suggested that she distract the guards, giving Edward a chance to neutralize them. Mary then removed her bandanna and reddened her lips with her own blood, revealing her identity as a woman, much to Edward's surprise.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary then approached the estate's gates, feigning injury, and killed the guards that came to her aid. She infiltrated the manor and found Roberts, only to discover he was working for Prins. He held her at gunpoint at the same time Edward assassinated Prins, but she escaped after Roberts informed Edward of his true allegiance. Roberts then shot the alarm bell and made his escape, followed shortly thereafter by his two would-be rescuers.<ref name="AC4"/>

In 1718, Mary arrived in Inagua to find Edward recovering from a wild party he had hosted, reacting with disgust to his continued indifference to finding a greater purpose. The two did not meet again until after Edward escaped [[Isla Providencia]], where he and [[Charles Vane]] had been marooned by [[Jack Rackham]]. Edward returned to Great Inagua to find that Rackham had barely lasted a few months as captain before Adéwalé and Mary overpowered him.<ref name="AC4"/>

Edward then returned to his search for Roberts in hopes the man would lead to the [[Observatory]]. Mary pleaded with him to forget about the gold and instead work with the Assassins, but he ignored her.<ref name="AC4"/>

In October 1720, while she was sailing as a part of Jack Rackham's crew, their ship was attacked by a sloop that was commissioned by the Governor of Jamaica with the intent to take out Rackham. Being that most of the crew were drunk, many of the pirates provided little resistance, with only Mary, Anne, and an unknown man fighting to their full potential.<ref name="AC4"/>

Eventually, the crew was imprisoned and sentenced to be hanged. At the trial, Bonny and Read revealed that they were pregnant, which led to their executions being delayed, since British law prevented women from being executed while they were expecting.

Mary and Anne were then moved to a prison in Kingston, and four months later, Mary gave birth to a girl. However, in accordance with the pardon, her child was taken away, and Mary became ill due to the prison's unsanitary conditions.<ref name="AC4"/>

The two women were soon rescued by Edward and Ah Tabai, who successfully infiltrated the prison and took out the guards stationed inside. Despite this, Mary was too ill to leave, even with Edward's insistence. With her dying breath, Mary asked him to redeem himself for her sake, and said she would always be with him. Refusing to leave her behind, Edward carried her body to Ah Tabai's boat, and she was taken to Tulum for burial.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary was an easygoing and adventurous woman, readily presenting as a man to facilitate her career and life as a pirate. Though she was one of the de facto leaders of the Pirate Republic in Nassau, she largely left its governing to Thatch and Hornigold, focusing her energy on external pursuits.<ref name="AC4"/>

Deeply dedicated to the Assassin Order, Mary believed the Creed exemplified a love for life and liberty that crossed cultural bounds, and she was driven in her efforts to support their cause. She intensely pursued her targets, chasing one down in the street and using her feminine appearance to trick the guards at Laurens Prins' estate.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary believed that there was something special about Edward Kenway; she spoke on his behalf to her Assassin brethren, and tried repeatedly to convince him to look beyond his greed. She often became irritated with Edward's selfishness, believing he was not living up to his full potential. However, she remained hopeful that he would see the error of his ways and join the Assassins in time, a belief that was realized after, and because of, her death.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary was a master of disguise, pretending to be a man for most of her life. She wore a green leather coat with a white shirt underneath, as well as a pair of boots. When disguised as a man, her shirt was folded up, and she wore a bandana. She would also put small amounts of her blood on her lips if she needed to appear feminine. This allowed her to easily trick guards.<ref name="AC4"/>

Mary was equipped with dual [[Hidden Blade]]s, along with a [[Firearms|pistol]], [[Swords|cutlass]], [[Bombs#Smoke bombs|smoke bombs]], as well as a [[blowpipe]]. She could easily hold her own in combat, taking down several British sailors before her arrest. She was capable of various assassination techniques, and also had skill at [[lockpicking]].<ref name="AC4"/>

As an Assassin, Mary was a proficient [[Freerunning|freerunner]], and could perform the traditional [[Leap of Faith]]. As exemplified during the attack on Tulum and her infiltration of Laurens Prins' manor, Mary was an expert at stealth, using the environment to move around undetected. Mary was also adept at [[Social Stealth]], moving through the crowds when tailing her target.<ref name="AC4"/>

Although she was hardly ever seen captaining any ships, Mary was a skilled sailor thanks to her time in the Royal Navy. When sailing with Jack Rackham, Mary served as the ''de facto'' captain of his ship for most of the time.<ref name="AC4"/>

However, the ''Ranger'' was no match for the galleon, and was forced to retreat.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

===Joining the Pirate Republic===
After arriving in [[Nassau]] in 1717, where he and [[Jack Rackham]] informed Edward Kenway of a large prize in a nearby [[Forts|fort]], Vane became a leading member of Nassau's pirate community.<ref name="Black Flag"/> In May of the same year, sobered and enraged by the rum shortage in Nassau, Vane recklessly attacked the ships of the area and was only saved through the timely intervention of [[Alonzo Batilla]]. The French pirate was sent by [[Christopher Condent]] to stop Vane from dooming himself and the Pirate Republic with him by attracting too much attention on Nassau.<ref name="Pirates">''[[Assassin's Creed: Pirates]]</ref>

In July 1718, he was present when [[Woodes Rogers]] arrived in Nassau to offer its residents the King's pardon, absolving them of their crimes if they chose to give up piracy. Unlike Benjamin Hornigold, Vane was not keen on accepting the pardon, and worked with Kenway to orchestrate an escape from the barricaded Nassau. Together, they planned to build a fireship with gunpowder to clear the blockade.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

While Kenway stole the gunpowder from the British, Vane managed to secure the pine pitch. However, they overheard that Commodore [[Peter Chamberlaine]] intended to disregard Roger's orders and destroy all pirate ships in Nassau's harbors. In order to ensure the success of their plan, Vane suggested that Kenway deal with Chamberlaine.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

After Chamberlaine was assassinated, Vane met up with Edward to load the gunpowder aboard Rackham's ship, the ''[[Royal Phoenix]]''. Before they left, Vane violently berated Rackham for smoking a pipe near the gunpowder. The fireship proved to be successful, destroying the ships blockading one of Nassau's harbors, allowing the ''[[Jackdaw]]'' and the ''Ranger'' to escape.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

===Mutiny and marooning===

When Edward Thatch announced his retirement from piracy, Vane sailed to North Carolina in a bid to dissuade him, and convince Thatch to help take back Nassau. However, his efforts were in vain and he departed, empty-handed and cursing Thatch.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

After Thatch's death at the hands of the British, Vane decided to help Kenway find the [[Observatory]]. The pair tailed the ''[[Royal African Pearl]]'', a [[Slavery|slave]] ship belonging to the [[Royal African Company]], in the hopes of finding information on the [[Sages|Sage]] [[Bartholomew Roberts]]. However, the ''Ranger'' was demasted and left adrift.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

Following the ''Royal African Pearl'''s eventual capture, Rackham and the surviving crew mutinied against Vane and Kenway, commandeering the ''Jackdaw'' and marooning both of them on [[Isla Providencia]]. During their time on the island, Vane's behavior became increasingly erratic; he took to hiding in the jungle, emerging only to steal food that Kenway had gathered.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

Growing frustrated with Vane's actions, Kenway pursued the man, and Vane fiercely retaliated with an arsenal of recovered weaponry. Despite this, Edward managed to neutralize Vane – but spared him – abandoning the man on the island while he escaped by commandeering a passing fisherman's [[schooner]].<ref name="Black Flag"/>

===Imprisonment===
Some time later, a British ship arrived, but its captain recognized Vane and refused to save him. Several weeks later, another British vessel arrived and Vane was allowed aboard. Unfortunately, the captain of the first ship happened to be aboard as well and spotted Vane after only a few days at sea. He then pointed him out to the captain and had him arrested on the spot before taking Vane to [[Port Royal]], where he remained for the next two years.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

Kenway, who was also captured due to Bartholomew Roberts' treachery, managed to escape his gibbet and found the delirious Vane in his cell singing "Down Among the Dead Men." Knowing that Vane's state of mind was beyond repair, Kenway left him behind, lamenting how he wished the pair could have parted as friends.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

Shortly after Edward's escape, Vane was hanged for piracy on 29 March 1721. His body was later left on display in a gibbet outside the harbor as a warning to other pirates.<ref name="Black Flag"/>

*Vane's death is historically anachronistic, as Mary dies before Vane, but in reality, Vane was executed in March 1721 while Mary died in April 1721.
*"''Down Among the Dead Men''", a [[Sea shanties|sea shanty]] that Vane sings on Isla Providencia, is popularly attributed to the English poet {{Wiki|John Dyer}}. However, this too is anachronistic, as Dyer only began writing poetry - much of which was later adapted into song - in 1721, well after Vane's marooning on the island.
