'''Duncan Walpole''' (1679 – 1715) was a member of the [[Assassins|Assassin Order]] stationed in the [[Caribbean]], during the early 18th century, who attempted to defect to the [[Templars]].

In June of 1715, the [[Royal Navy]] [[Ships|warship]] carrying Walpole, the [[HMS Intrigue|HMS ''Intrigue'']], identified and attacked a [[Piracy|pirate]] [[brig]], the ''[[Jacobite]]'', captained by [[Bramah]]. The pirates managed to de-mast the [[frigate]], but soon found that their own weapon magazine had been hit. Boarding the ship, Walpole assassinated the captain, but was thrown overboard by the magazine explosion.

Shipwrecked in [[Cape Bonavista]], [[Cuba]], Walpole attempted to enlist the aid of the only other survivor - the pirate [[Edward Kenway]] - in reaching [[Havana]]. Edward attempted to haggle the price of passage, but Duncan threatened him with a [[Firearms|flintlock pistol]] in response, only to find that it was unable to fire due to wet gunpowder. While Edward had wanted to work out an agreement, Walpole tried to kill him. Walpole subsequently fled into the jungle, and Edward gave chase before eventually dueling him and taking his life.

On Duncan's corpse, Edward found a letter from the [[Spain|Spanish]] Governor of Cuba, [[Laureano de Torres y Ayala]], referencing the cargo Walpole was bringing to him, a [[Blood vials|blood vial]] and maps pertaining to the locations of [[Assassin bureau]]s across the Caribbean. During her father's travels in the [[Caribbean]], Jennifer lived with her mother in [[United Kingdom|Wales]]. Born after her father's departure, Jennifer was unknown to Edward, but following the death of her mother in 1720, made arrangements to travel to [[Inagua|Great Inagua]] to be with him.<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

Returning to England, Jennifer soon came to live with her father, his second wife [[Tessa Kenway|Tessa Stephenson-Oakley]] and their son in {{Wiki|Queen's Square, London|Queen Anne's Square}} in Bloomsbury, [[London]].<ref name="ACF">''[[Assassin's Creed: Forsaken]]''</ref> However, she refused to use the Kenway surname, saying that she had been raised solely by her mother in her early years and would thusly keep her mother's maiden name.

She was renowned by the noblemen of London for her great beauty, and for her "smokey" stare, though Haytham thought of it to be more akin to a scowl, due in part to her resentment of her father for not training her in the ways of the [[Assassins]]. As a result, she was often cold towards her half-brother, and railed against her father's plans to marry her to [[Reginald Birch]], one of the Kenway's senior property managers.<ref name="ACF"/>

After discovering Birch was a [[Templars|Templar]] and informing her father, five [[mercenaries]] kidnapped her after storming the house, killing her father and taking his [[Edward Kenway's journal|journal]]. Birch had her sold to [[Turkey|Turkish]] [[Slavery|slavers]], while pinning the crime on Edward's valet [[Jack Digweed]] and taking Haytham under his wing.<ref name="ACF"/>

Jennifer became a concubine in [[Topkapı Palace]], and by 1757, she was transported to [[Damascus]], to serve under the [[Ottoman Empire|Ottoman]] governor in charge, {{Wiki|As'ad Pasha al-Azm}}. However, since Jennifer was in her mid-40s at the time, she was too old to be a concubine, working instead as a servant. Ultimately, Haytham and his loyal friend, [[Jim Holden]], infiltrated the palace to find and rescue her.<ref name="ACF"/>

After informing Haytham that Birch killed their father, they launched an attack on his chateau near [[Troyes]], [[France]]. Jennifer attacked Birch in his office, and despite him holding a knife to her throat, she managed to throw him onto a sword pinned in the door, ending his life.<ref name="ACF"/>

She returned to London to take hold of the mansion in Queen Anne's Square. She and Haytham stayed in touch, but their correspondence was distant since neither of them knew each other very well. Operating primarily from the Templar headquarters in [[London]], Birch was responsible for the recruitment and training of [[Haytham Kenway]], who was the son of Birch's employer [[Edward Kenway]], a prominent [[Assassins|Assassin]].

In 1754, Birch ordered Haytham to travel to British America to find a [[Grand Temple|First Civilization storehouse]] after the retrieval of [[Grand Temple Key|its key]]. This expedition led to the establishment of a strong Templar presence in British America, and later the [[United States]].

Birch was born in England in 1705 to a London merchant. Following in his father's footsteps, he began his dealings at a young age, and by the time he had reached his mid-20s, Birch owned several merchant [[ships]] mainly involved with the shipment of tea to British America.<ref name="AC3">''[[Assassin's Creed III]]''</ref>

Birch became one of Edward Kenway's senior property managers, and began courting his daughter [[Jennifer Scott|Jenny]]. His true goal was to gain access to [[Edward Kenway's journal]], which contained his research on First Civilization settlements in [[North America]].<ref name="Forsaken">''[[Assassin's Creed: Forsaken]]''</ref>

===Recruiting Haytham===
Birch met Haytham Kenway in 1733 on his eighth birthday, when Birch accompanied the Kenway family on a trip to {{Wiki|White's|White's Chocolate House}} on Chesterfield Street. On the way back, the group was attacked by a mugger, who attempted to steal [[Tessa Kenway]]'s necklace.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Birch threatened to kill the man, but was dissuaded by Edward. The two men smiled after putting aside their disagreement. Over the following two years, Birch became a frequent visitor to the Kenway household, and was deemed a suitable match for Jenny, although she disliked him.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Birch also sent [[mercenaries]] from [[Edward Braddock]]'s regiment to blackmail Edward's gentleman's gentleman [[Jack Digweed]] into revealing the location of the journal, but he did not know where it was. Afterwards, Birch had a conversation with Haytham about his sword training, and learned that his father kept his steel sword in a secret compartment in the games room, indicating the journal's location.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Jenny soon discovered Birch was a Templar, and informed her father, leading to a row in his office. Birch tried to threaten Edward into giving him the journal, but he refused. A day or so later, Birch sent his mercenaries to attack the Kenway Manor, who killed Edward, kidnapped Jenny and stole his journal. Birch arrived, ensuring Edward's killer would not do the same to Haytham, and they escaped the household as it was set on fire.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Shortly before Edward's funeral, Birch was appointed the family councillor and Haytham's guardian. After five years of searching for Digweed, Birch and Haytham bought a chateau near [[Troyes]], [[France]], where he continued to train Haytham in the ways of the Templars, eventually inducting him in 1744.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

In 1747, Birch sent Haytham to retrieve Edward's journal from [[Juan Vedomir]], a Templar who was meant to be decoding the journal, but had begun collaborating with the Assassins. When Haytham met him in [[Prague]], Birch informed him that Tessa had died. After attending her memorial, Haytham discovered Digweed was living in west [[Germany]]. Birch travelled with him to find Digweed, but sent two of Braddock's mercenaries to reach him before he could reveal the truth to Haytham.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

As Haytham reached Digweed's location, he saw one of the mercenaries about to slit Digweed's throat. Chasing him into the forest, Birch took the opportunity to silence Digweed permanently. However, before Haytham killed the mercenary, he learned that his father was an Assassin who was killed for one of his possessions, and that the mercenary served in the [[British Army]] under Braddock, rousing Haytham's suspicions. After an argument, Haytham rode to chase the other mercenary, whom he had seen riding back to Braddock's regiment in the [[Netherlands|Dutch Republic]].<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Haytham reunited with Birch at White's in 1753, telling him of his service with Braddock in the army and his concerns over his bloodthirsty actions, believing he was abandoning the Order.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Unconcerned, Birch gave Haytham his latest assignment, which was to kidnap [[Lucio]], a [[Corsica]]n scholar who could decode the journal. Haytham captured him, but he expressed concern over Lucio and his mother [[Monica]]'s treatment after coming to Birch's chateau and seeing them chained in the cellar. Birch gave him his word that they would be released safely once their work was done.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Birch then ordered Haytham to obtain a "precursor" artifact from an attending patron and member of the Assassin Order, [[Miko]].<ref name="AC3"/>

After Haytham had retrieved the key to the undisclosed Grand Temple, Birch secured Haytham's passage to [[Boston]] for him to find the First Civilization storehouse and establish a permanent Templar presence in British America.<ref name="AC3"/>

Once Haytham rescued his half-sister in [[Damascus]] and discovered Birch ordered the attack on the Kenway Manor, the Templar stormed Birch's chateau. Once inside, Birch tried to justify his actions to Haytham by explaining that he did everything for the greater good. Haytham reprimanded him for turning him into a Templar from lies and deceit. Birch then engaged in a struggle with Jenny, before she eventually killed him by throwing him into a sword that Haytham had planted in a door.<ref name="Forsaken"/>

Birch was a fanatic obsessed with gaining the power of the First Civilization by any means necessary, while masking it beneath the veneer of a chivalrous Knight Templar to indoctrinate Haytham.
