The Villa Auditore was a familial home and stronghold of the Auditore family, located within the city of Monteriggioni, in Toscana. Constructed by Domenico Auditore in 1290, the Villa remained home to the Auditore family up until the turn of the 16th century, when it was heavily damaged during the Siege of Monteriggioni.

During the ownership of Mario Auditore, the Villa became rundown and in desperate need of repair; the arrival of his nephew – Ezio Auditore da Firenze – in 1476, heralded a rebirth for not only the Villa, but the city of Monteriggioni as well. However, during the events of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Moteriggioni was attacked by Cesare Borgia and Villa Auditore fell once again into disrepair.

History
Domenico Auditore, who built the Villa in 1290, designed the Villa not only as a home, but as a fortress and training ground for the town. The building itself was filled with hidden compartments and rooms, whilst the grounds catered to a number of different uses. In 1296, Domenico constructed the Auditore Family Crypt; although initially unconnected, the construction of an escape route from within the Villa brought the two constructions together.

In 1320 a Florentine attack left the facade damaged. A new facade was erected and a painting gallery was subsequently added to the interior.

By 1436, the Villa hosted the newest generation of Auditore assassins; the brothers Mario and Giovanni. Following the death of their father and Giovanni’s departure for Florence, Mario became the sole ruler of Monteriggioni and resident of the Villa in 1454. Despite his love for the Villa, it fell into disrepair along with the city it protected, due to him spending his money on war.

In 1476, Mario's nephew, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, as well as his mother and Claudia Auditore da Firenze, came seeking shelter in Monteriggioni. Following the execution of Giovanni and his brothers, Ezio had become wanted in Florence. Ezio intended to take his mother and sister to Spain, to Mario's protest.

Ezio decided to stay instead in Monteriggioni and seek revenge on those responsible for the execution. Ezio became, in effect, co-ruler of Monteriggioni, and was the one responsible for the renovation of the town.

Although the exact length of time it took for the Villa to be rebuilt is unknown, by December 1499 it was once again an opulent structure, as well as the headquarters of the Assassin Order in Italy.

On January 2nd 1500, however, the Papal forces, led by Cesare Borgia besieged Monteriggioni, devastating the town and Villa and killing Mario. The Villa was abandoned for at least 7 years, as Ezio, his now elderly mother and sister left the ruins of Monteriggioni to wage war against the House of Borgia in Rome.

However, sometime before 1554, possibly in Ezio's lifetime, the Auditore resiezed control of Monteriggioni, presumably reparing the Villa, too. In 1554, however, the Auditore were betrayed by Giovannino Zeti, keeper of the garrison and a Florentine exile, who gave the keys to the city to the Medici. The Medici conquered Monteriggioni, they allowed the Auditore to continue ruling the city due to the families' good relationship.

On the ninth of September 2012, Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Rebecca Crane and Shaun Hastings set up a temporary base of operations within the Sanctuary beneath the Villa Auditore, by then in disrepair once again; during their stay the Assassins lived within the Villa, coming out only to collect provisions. They left for Rome on October 10.

The Villa Auditore had a multitude of rooms, some hidden. Below is a list of known rooms;
*The painting gallery
*Ezio's room and study

Trivia
*The glyph on the wall of the villa is a barcode, incorporated with the number 12212012. This presumably represents the end date of the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012. That date is also when Abstergo Industries, the modern day Knights Templar, will launch a communications satellite containing at least one Piece of Eden.
*In 2012, a red trail is shown in Eagle Vision, leading from the courtyard behind the villa down to the fountain at the base of the stairs. Since this trail follows the route Ezio took around the villa during his retreat, it could be bloodstains left over from the final stage of the battle.

The Bleeding Effect is a disorder caused by overexposure to the Animus, suggested by Lucy Stillman to be similar to 'certain forms of multiple personality and delusional disorders'. With increasing exposure, subjects begin to experience a blending of their own real-time memories and their genetic memories, leading to difficulty in distinguishing the two, and ultimately mental breakdown. The effect is suffered notably by Subject 16 and Desmond Miles.

Symptoms
Desmond
Desmond gains the fighting and free-running abilities of his ancestors, as well as the ability to use Eagle Vision. This is followed by hallucinations; in Assassin's Creed II, Desmond is told that as long as the visions are shorter than thirty seconds, "he'll be fine." They start out ghost-like and indistinct, but become longer and more vivid, at one point causing Desmond to black out.

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it is shown that Desmond's symptoms are getting much worse, and Desmond despairs to Lucy Stillman about what might happen if he can't stop the slowly lengthening visions, wondering how much longer it would be before he started "painting symbols on the walls." Despite his concern, these hallucinations prove quite useful, with Desmond being able navigate through the tunnels under the Auditore Villa, and later the Colosseum, by following his visions of Ezio Auditore; even performing his first Leap of Faith at the modern Monteriggioni by doing so. However, it is seen in concerned e-mails shared between Rebecca and Lucy that Desmond has started screaming in his sleep since being at the Sanctuary.

Subject 16
Subject 16, known as an extreme case, is seldom described before his breakdown. In his messages to Desmond through the glyphs, he has difficulty remembering who he is and what year it is; however, he thinks clearly enough to keep the goal of revealing The Truth in mind, and to leave messages and clues to do so. He becomes increasingly obsessed with this, leading him to drain his own blood to write with, which ends in his apparent suicide.

Assassin's Creed
The bleeding effect is at first only hinted at, with Lucy and Vidic implying that using the Animus for prolonged periods was dangerous. Later, Lucy's email to Vidic describes it in much more detail: having been forced to use the Animus for days at a time, Subject 16 gradually became unable to control the bleeding effect, and was driven to insanity by the genetic memories he experienced outside the Animus. Eventually, after writing warnings to future subjects in his own blood, Subject 16 committed suicide.

Meanwhile, by the end of Assassin's Creed the bleeding effect is starting to show its side-effects with Desmond, as he had learned to use new skills such as Eagle Vision outside of the Animus.

Assassin's Creed II
After their escape from Abstergo, Lucy attempts to use the bleeding effect to train Desmond as an Assassin much more quickly than would otherwise be possible. He is quickly able to learn skills such as Free Running in the Animus by following the life of Ezio. The bleeding effect gets progressively worse as Desmond begins to hallucinate about his other ancestor Altaïr, who he recollected memories from in the first Animus. This allowed him to uncontrollably venture into memories without using the Animus. In one recollection, Altaïr was seen chasing Maria up a tower in Acre, where the conception of their child happened. Despite these side-effects Desmond continues to use the Animus.

Subject 16, apparently able to see Abstergo's past plots through the bleeding effect, leaves an intricate trail of evidence through the memories of his and Desmond's common ancestor, Ezio.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
In Assassin's Creed Brotherhood the bleeding effect has an important role in the multiplayer mode. Present day Templars are using Animi to increase their abiltites, in the same manner as Desmond, by training as their ancestors and letting the bleeding effect transfer their skills to them.

Desmond, on the other hand, is continuing to suffer from the bleeding effect. Throughout the game he sees echos of Ezio in the places he visits. Notably underneath the Auditore Villa, during the escape from the siege, and at the end of the game when following Ezio's "ghost" led Desmond to the apple.

Assassin's Creed: The Fall
In Assassin's Creed: The Fall, Daniel Cross, a recovering drug and alcohol addict, suffers from unsettling visions of a past life, as the Russian Assassin Nikolai Orlov, during the Russian Revolution. He is first seen in a psychiatrist's office, then viewing Nikolai Orlov's life as an Apprentice Assassin.

Trivia
*It is interesting to question how Daniel Cross was suffering the bleeding effect, since there's no information if he ever was put in an Animus before he started to suffer its side-effects.
*One of Lucy's e-mails in the first game posits that some phenomena such as past life regression and mental illnesses such as multiple personalities could stem from a rare naturally occuring bleeding effect
