I don't understand why so many people claim AC2 had a much better, or "clever" storyline.

AC2:
Ezio's family is killed, he takes up his father's secret assassin lifestyle, and goes in search of his fraternity's enemies across Italy. We don't even learn who the main antagonist is until most of the game is complete, and in the end, Ezio lets him live.

The second game had a story that made much more sense to me.

ACB:
The villain is made clear from the very begining, and this time it's actually an ambitious and ruthless enemy worth fighting against. The supporting characters are actually developed as supporting characters, and Ezio's conclusion is very satisfying. Combine that with his flashback missions and AC:Brotherhood feels like it's telling more of Ezio's life than AC2 did.
