The Pistol, which is also referred to as the Hidden Gun, is one of the expansions of the hidden blade invented by Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad using the Apple of Eden. After discovering the design for it on one of the Codex Pages, Leonardo da Vinci managed to craft one for Ezio Auditore in Assassin's Creed II.

The weapon consists of a small firearm with a very short barrel attached to the bottom of a Hidden Blade that, if aimed properly, can kill a target from a distance. In Assassin's Creed II, it is unlocked right after you finish Sequence 8. It also returns in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in both single and multiplayer.

Usage
The pistol provides the deadly effectiveness of the hidden blade, but at long range. Though an excellent weapon for assassination from afar, it will give away the player's position immediately after firing by creating a loud noise that will alert any guards within the area. The pistol takes about a second and a half to fully aim, though it can be fired before it is fully aimed. Firing immediately without aiming is not advised, as even at close range, it is highly unlikely to result in a hit.

Aiming the pistol within guards' lines of sight will automatically make them suspicious. Against a small number of guards, aiming it for more than several seconds will also cause the group to lose morale and eventually flee, though this tactic will not be successful on Brutes.

Both the pistol and Throwing Knives are disabled in the Secret Locations that require the player to chase an Agile, or other such opponent, as said weapons would allow the player to kill them before the intended time in the course, and would eliminate the entire chase altogether.

Assassin's Creed II
Though not recommended, it is possible to quickly switch to the pistol during a battle, take a random shot from as close as possible to an enemy, before resuming the fight. Despite its low success rate, this method can potentially pick off immobile opponents, or quickly eliminate enemies without the need for counter-kills.

The pistol does not kill in a single shot during the battles with either Dante Moro and or Rodrigo Borgia, though it is just as effective as usual when the player is required to assassinate them.

Up to 6 bullets may be held at a time, and can be purchased from any blacksmith. However, they are quite expensive, as one bullet costs 175 florins (149 florins with full discount in Monteriggioni), which is 3 and a half times the cost of a throwing knife. However, bullets may also be obtained by looting dead soldiers.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
In Brotherhood, the player begins with the pistol already equipped, along with a full stock of bullets. The weapon functions as it did in Assassin's Creed II, however the aiming method has been modified. Though perfect aim is achieved much more quickly (possibly due to the fact that Ezio is better at aiming it) , the bullet can only be fired after the shot is fully charged. The maximum number of bullets is again set at 6, however, it is possibly to purchase 4 more slots in Uplay, for 30 Units.

A second additional feature is Ezio's ability to dual-wield the pistol along with a medium, primary weapon. While in combat, the player can hold down the attack button in low profile and aim at his currently locked target, making it easier to quickly dispatch faraway opponents without having to switch weapons. During a kill-streak, Ezio can hold down the attack button while targeting an opponent, causing him to perform an automatic double kill with his sword and pistol, using up ammunition in the process. The pistol is also used in a number of counter-kills and executions, in which Ezio shoots his opponent at point blank range. For reasons unknown, these attacks do not use up bullet ammunition, and if the ammunition is out, he won't use the pistol until at least one bullet is restored. It should also be noted that the player does not need to aim during double kills, counter kills, executions, or while on horseback.

The firing mechanism of the pistol differs to the one in Assassin's Creed II, as Ezio no longer has to pull the trigger to shoot the bullet; instead, all he has to do is simply target the victim and the gun will fire. Nowhere during the game is it stated why the weapon behaves in such a manner, and it can only be assumed that the pistol is used similarly to the hidden blade, which also has no visible trigger system.

Additionally, the sound of the pistol more closely resembles that of a musket, rather than the cannon-like sound in Assassin's Creed II. However, the Assassin Apprentices' hidden guns (obtained by rank 5) use the same firing sound as heard in the previous game.

After reuniting with Leonardo da Vinci, Ezio was able to purchase an upgrade to his pistol that allows him to fire small Poison Darts from it, in addition to bullets. These darts are usable when the poison blade is equipped, and shares its effects.

Codex Description
"Success! We have found a way to alter the structure of the hidden blade so that it can be used to launch small projectiles. It is capable of grievous damage – even from great distance. I confess, the means by which I came about the discovery was... risky to say the least. But I have found that in small doses, and with a focused mind, the Apple can be used without ill effect. Or so I hope.

The knowledge of projectile combat is not new to us, having been observed amongst our Eastern neighbors. But their weapons were much larger – and insufficient for our needs. I have now found a way to miniaturize their designs, embedding their fiery weapon into a form that can be worn on the wrist.

We have also refined the formula for combustible powder, such that common ingredients might be used. This is a dangerous bit of knowledge and it is best shared with only our closest allies..." -Altaïr in Codex Page 28.

Trivia
*Altaïr is the true designer of the pistol, as Leonardo just decodes his Codex. Altaïr claimed that he had invented a smaller version of the weapon his neighbors from the East had, using knowledge from the Apple of Eden.
*In Assassin's Creed II, often when the pistol is fired, a dog can be heard barking. Though not a surprise as dogs tend to bark at loud noises, no dogs are seen or mentioned in the game.
*Ammunition can be found as an item when looting the bodies of any deceased guards, whether or not they are arquebusiers.
*The design and physical appearance of the pistol is similar to the concept of a Pistol Sword, only applied to the Hidden Blade instead.
*In Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines when you connect your PSP to a PS3, you will obtain a variant of the pistol that fires Throwing Knives instead of bullets.
*The pistol is also a multiplayer ability for multiplayer characters to use in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood; though it is unknown if they actually possessed the weapon, or if Abstergo simply added the ability in the Animus.
*In the multiplayer mode on Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the pistol acts like the one in Assassin's Creed II, that is, it takes longer to fire and it can be fired without aiming it fully.
*Strangely, in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood the Assassin recruits' pistols are much weaker than Ezio's, taking up to three shots to kill a guard; though this may be attributed to Ezio being more skilled in wielding the pistol, allowing him to kill in just one shot.
*Rifling (a barrel forging technique that improves the accuracy of a gun significantly) was not invented until the end of the 15th century. As such, it is odd that the pistol is so accurate, especially since it would have a very short barrel, lowering its accuracy further than that of a musket. This may be due to the Apple revealing rifling to Altair.
*The bullets of the pistol all have Assassin insignias on them.
*In the games it is called the "Pistola".
So, what brings you to me?
Rosa was a member of the thieves faction led by Antonio in Assassin's Creed II. Ezio first encounters Rosa upon arriving in Venice, where she attempts to pickpocket him out of the money he was about to use to purchase a wooden model for Leonardo. Later, Ezio saves her after she was shot in the leg with an arrow while trying to climb the Palazzo della Seta, and was unable to run away from the guards. She eventually teaches Ezio the climb-leap ability.

Biography
Early life
Rosa was born in 1460. Nine months before, a Venetian nobleman paid a prostitute for her services and Rosa was the result of this event. The prostitute probably couldn't raise the child, so Rosa survived in the streets of Venice alone. At the age of fifteen, Rosa tried to steal from Antonio de Magianis, a stranger to her at this point, but was caught. Antonio, being the chief of the Venetian Thieves Guild, decided to keep Rosa as his pupil rather than sending her to the guards. Throughout her apprenticeship, Antonio noted many of her talents, especially her high level of agility. Antonio seemed to maintain a very parental relationship with Rosa as he would often call her sweetheart or little darling.

Assisting Ezio
By the year 1485, Emilio Barbarigo, in secret a member of the Templars, had complete control over Venice's merchant district. The Venetian thieves weren't satisfied with Emilio's rule and aspired to free the district's inhabitants. Rosa and a group of thieves attempted to infiltrate Emilio's Palazzo della Seta, but Rosa ended up getting shot in her leg by an archer. While trying to run back to the guild, she bumped into Ezio, whom she had previously robbed. He later helped her to fend off the attacking guards and also carried her to fellow thief Ugo, who put her in a boat. Ugo managed to get Rosa to the guild while Ezio took out the archers trying to kill them.

While recovering from her wounds, Rosa taught Ezio how to grab higher ledges. After Ezio's first successful climb-leap attempt, Rosa initiates a mission which challenged Ezio to climb the Santa Maria dei Frari within a time limit.

In a later mission, Rosa, along with several other of Antonio's thieves disguised themselves as archers Ezio had killed earlier. This was part of a larger plan which involved Ezio sneaking the the Palazzo della Seta to assassinate Emilio Barbarigo.

In 1488, on Ezio's birthday, Rosa gifted l'Arsenale's shipping manifest to Ezio. It detailed the return of a Templar boat the day after.

Madam of the Rosa in Fiore
In 1504, Claudia Auditore da Firenze, the madam of the Rosa in Fiore in Rome, stepped down after being assaulted by Borgia fanatics. Soon after, Antonio was contacted by his fellow Assassin La Volpe, who asked him if Rosa would like to replace Claudia as the brothel's madam. Rosa agreed and moved to Rome.

Characteristics and personality
Rosa, being the only female of the Venetian Thieves Guild, has a very aggressive, tough personality to match the male-dominated group, overall making her a tomboy. For example, a note from Antonio states that the thieves who tried to kiss Rosa were badly beaten up by her afterwards. She is not afraid to give orders or speak her mind to her fellow thieves (Ugo, for example, receives only insults from her, despite assisting in her rescue) as she will yell and insult them to their faces.

Rosa also appears to have one of the dirtiest mouths in the game after Caterina Sforza; this is shown after she gets shot in the leg, when she shouts "Bastardi!" left and right. Upon her initial run in with Ezio she claims she does not need assistance with her wound and Ezio is forced to follow and protect her until she eventually falls, at which point he carries her to safety. When carried to Antonio, she fiercely cursed him out while he was removing the arrow. After being rescued, Rosa’s personality and attitude toward Ezio changes drastically, becoming extremely flirtatious and more intimate, such as looking excited when Ezio stated he needed her, only to become disappointed when he wanted to learn her climbing technique. She seems to revert to her true self when around him instead of the tough thief image she maintains most of the time.

Relationship with Ezio
Like a lot of women in Assassin’s Creed II, Rosa becomes attracted to Ezio after their initial meeting, although she tried to pickpocket him by pretending to bump into him, causing Ezio to call her a jerk. However, unlike the majority of Ezio’s other love interests presented throughout the game, Ezio maintains a close, intimate friendship with Rosa and the two are often seen flirting whenever in each other's company, with an implied relationship during that period of their lives. Although, in the novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, Ezio and Rosa do have an intimate relationship together, constantly flirting and many cases of kissing.

Trivia
*Rosa fights with a Sultan's Knife.
*It is also possible to assassinate Rosa. After the mission Everything Must Go, you might see her walking past Ezio in the guard armor she wore during the memory. Here, you can assassinate her, however it will not affect gameplay.
*The arrow that hit Rosa's leg disappears during gameplay but reappears after.
Antonio de Magianis was a member of the Order of Assassins and leader of the Thieves guild in Venice during the late 15th Century.

Biography
Born in 1443 to a poor family, Antonio lived with his father, a cobbler, and his mother, a maid for an upper-class family. As he aged, he increasingly developed a want for a richer life, but no matter how hard he studied, the schools would not accept him, and no matter how hard he worked he could not change his circumstances. Realizing that hard labor would not get him what he wanted, Antonio decided to steal it instead.

Eventually, Antonio found his way into the Order of Assassins, and subsequently set up the Thieves guild of Venice. Antonio and his fellow thieves consented only to theft of property from the largely immoral Venetian nobility, not ordinary citizens, making him something like an Italian Robin Hood. He considered his guild more of a "business" than a crime syndicate.

Following the arrival of Ezio Auditore da Firenze in 1481, Antonio agreed to aid Ezio in his quest to destroy the Barbarigo family and ensure Venice's future. Seven years later, Antonio revealed himself to be an Assassin during Ezio's duel with the Templar Grand Master Rodrigo Borgia. He was later present at Ezio's induction into the Order.

In 1491, Antonio was contacted by Luis Santangel, who was seeking protection for him and his friend Christoffa Corombo as they attempted to meet with Rodrigo Borgia in Venice. Antonio contacted Ezio and sought his aid in the matter. He then put Ezio in contact with the Thieves' Guild in Barcelona before Ezio traveled there to battle the Templars.

Antonio met with the Assassins at Monteriggioni in 1499 as they formulated a plan to prevent Rodrigo from accessing the Vault in Rome. He agreed to create distractions throughout Rome in order to give Ezio an opportunity to infiltrate the Capella Sistina.
Trivia
*The "courier disguise" item in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy is identical to Antonio's attire.
*Though being an important character, Antonio acts like any normal thieves
We are with you, friend, only lead the way.
The Thieves are one of the three factions of Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood helping the main character Ezio (the other two being the Courtesans and the Mercenaries).

Led by Antonio, their main hideout is located in the commercial district of Venice. The guild is more of an organization similar to the Mafia, rather than just a bunch of robbers. They don't target innocent citizens, and instead defy the local, corrupted nobility. In Florence and Rome, the thieves are led by La Volpe.

Use
The thieves can help Ezio by distracting the guards, and luring them away; however, this ability can be only used once for a single group of thieves, and once you use it, they are no longer in your service. On rooftops, the lure command is replaced with the fight command, directing the thieves to fight the guards instead of stealing from them. Otherwise, at any time, engaging in a fight while a group of thieves is following you will automatically prompt them to assist you. You can also hire a second group to help at this point, though only one group will follow you around when the fight is over.

Be careful when free running, however, for the thieves can easily fall into water and die (as they can't swim). Thus, if you have thieves following you, avoid jumping across canals from the roof, particularly in Venice. Also remember that thieves can be just as easily killed by falling while performing normal acrobatics (sometimes they can be killed by other thieves if they are in the way).

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, hired thieves act much as they did in the previous game, however they will also now pickpocket money for Ezio as they follow him through the streets of Rome. In order to aid Ezio, La Volpe based the local thieves guild in an inn called La Volpe Addormentata ("The Sleeping Fox"). The inn acted as both a hideout for the thieves, as well as a place where civilians and guards could gamble, though the thieves made sure that they would never win. At the back of the bar lay La Volpe's office, which contained a board where he listed the top five best thieves based on their actions. Ezio later decided to join this competition, and was thus given the Thief Guild Challenges. There Ezio can talk with La Volpe to obtain several Thief Missions across Rome. Doing these missions will help the thieves to beat their rivals, the Cento Occhi.

Equipment
Thieves are lightly armed, carrying only a short blade, and wearing very light armor, though this allows them to follow Ezio in many of his acrobatic moves. They will not, however, follow him up very high towers (such as view points) or make far leaps, if they are able to find another route, no matter how lengthy it may be. They are surprisingly effective in combat, easily dodging or blocking enemy blows, and returning them. A group of four thieves can take on eight Medici Guardsmen and suffer very little damage. Their only vulnerability in combat are the Brutes and Seekers.

*Ugo
*Rosa
*Franco

Trivia
*During the mission "Cleaning House," Ezio has to hunt down and kill three traitor thieves in Venice. Strangely, unlike the other thieves, the three use swords instead of daggers.
*Like guards, thieves are generally better equipped in Venice than they are in Florence.
*You can kill thieves by using your sword to throw them from rooftops.
*In Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, one of the thieves working for La Volpe is traitor that gives information of the assassins to the Borgia.
