Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (الطائر ابن لا أحد in Arabic) (1166 - unknown) is the main protagonist in Assassin's Creed, as well as the ancestor of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Desmond Miles.

Biography
Early Life
Altaïr was born to an unknown couple, consisting of a Christian woman and a Muslim man. During his childhood, he left his parents at Masyaf in order to join the Assassins order. He was then trained and raised by Al Mualim and quickly rose among his brethren in skill, gaining status with his teacher and eventually becoming Master Assassin and Instructor.

Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles
Altaïr's backstory before the events revealed through Desmond Miles' memories, Altaïr is still a high-ranking assassin who is tasked with recovering an artifact known as Chalice. In order to find it, he had to acquire three keys and fight off Templars, killing many of them on his way. During his adventures, he also managed to temporary protect Acre from the siege and even discovered a traitor amongst the Assassins. It is later revealed that the Chalice is in fact a woman named Adha, but she is kidnapped by Templars under the leadership of Lord Basilisk.

Altaïr succeeds in killing Basilisk, but is unable to save Adha, who is taken away by ship. Altaïr yells that he will find her, but has he eventually succeeded or heard of her again is unknown. In Assassin's Creed II, one of the Codex pages reveals that he later caught up to Adha and had found her corpse. In the text, Altaïr states that he held her corpse and exacted vengence on those that killed her. It is hinted that he loved her, and her death deeply hurt him. The circumstances of Adha's death are not made clear.

Assassin's Creed
A small sacrifice to save many. It is necessary.

The memory begins at Solomon's Temple underneath the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where Altaïr, Malik and Kadar were sent by Al Mualim in order to retrieve an artifact before the Templars. The assassins take a innocent worker as a guide to the temple and upon entrance, even with under heavy protest of Malik, Altaïr kills him and proceed to the Treasure Chamber. Before getting the artifact, Robert de Sable, the assassin's target-of-opportunity at that moment enters the room heavily escorted. Altaïr approaches and charges at him, before the other assassins could stop him, but de Sable, ready to the attack, deflects it and throws Altaïr at a adjacent room. The thrown destroyed supporting wood planks that kept the roof intact, which drops debris and blocks acess to the treasure room. Altaïr, hearing the fight at the blocked chamber and unable to help, leaves the temple.

Arriving at Masyaf, Altaïr meets Rauf and Abbas, two members of the brotherhood with deep contrast between their opinions of him, and reports to Al Mualim, leader of the Assassins, the mission's result and fellow assassins deaths. Expressing deep sorrow for his failure, Al Mualim is interrupted by the arrival of Malik which a severed blodied arm and the artifact. He blames the mission's failure and his brother's death at Altaïr's arrogant actions, but before a decision is taked by the Assassin's leader, the city falls under attack.

Altaïr helps hold off the Templars while the townsfolk reunites in the city's fortress, and returns to Al Mualin after the evacuation is completed. At the fortress courtyard, Rauf calls Altaïr upon the top of a tower upon order of Al Mualim. There, both of them and another assassin perform a Leap of Faith, showing the templars at bay that they have no fear of death. With the other assassins leg broken from the fall, Rauf stays to take care of him while Altaïr moves to a nerby building. Climbing it, he unleashed a sea of tree trunks, taking out almost all of de Sable's army. The attackes retreat, and Al Mualim proceeds to the judge of Altaïr.

Judged before the whole order, Altaïr is deemed a traitor and stabbed by Al Mualim. But he did not die.

Altaïr wakes up from his "Sleep of the Dead", and Al Mualim explain that killing him would be a waste. The master then strips him of his possessions and title, and sends him in pursuit of the informant within Masyaf who oppened the gate to the Templars. He finded and taked him to Al Mualim, which kills the traitor and gives Altaïr back his Hidden Blade and sword. He then informs Altaïr that his missions will no long be provided to him with the target location, but must be investigated and worked upon by himself. Al Mualim then offers Altaïr a deal. Nine lives in exchange of his own.

The Nine
{{dialogue3|Al Mualim|I hold here a list. Nine men adorn it, nine men who need to die. They are plague-bringers, war-makers...
Altaïr starts his quest, leaving Masyaf and riding through the kingdom on horseback to Damascus, location of the first target, Tamir.
Arriving there, he goes to the local Bureau and asks permission for the assassination. The dai denies it, ordering Altaïr to first gather information about his target. Going through the city's poor district, Altaïr interrogates informants, pickpocket letters and maps and eavesdrop on conversations around him, acquiring the lcoation of the target. Returing to the Bureau with this info, he receives a permission for the kill and a white feather, to be wet in the victim's blood as proof of the murder.

Arriving at Jerusalem's Bureau, Altaïr is harshily received by Malik, that Bureau's new leader. Malik then sends him to the investigations, returning when he has the necessary information. After receiving the permission and the feather, Altaïr enters Talal's slave complex, but is ambushed by his followers. Dispatching of them, he chases Talal throughout the rooftops and streets, finally catching up to him and putting a hidden blade on his neck.

Altaïr returns to the Bureau, reports to Masyaf and then goes to Acre, where Garnier de Naplouse is to be killed.

Gaining another part of his equipment back, Altaïr proceeds to Damascus to finish off the merchant king, Abul Nuqoud. After investigating and receiving the feather from the Dai, he proceeds to the merchant's palace where a party is being held.
Infiltrating the palace, Altaïr arrives at the Abul's speech, where he order his archers to shoot on the guests he calls "false friends and liars". The assassin proceeds up the palace from the courtyard, kill the archers and stalks upon the roof of Abul's sacade. Falling down and taking out his bodyguard, Altaïr proceeds behind the Merchant Kings and stabs him, ending the massacre. The palace and the town are set on full alert, and Altaïr escapes the palace while losing his pursuers. Arriving at the Bureau, he reports success and move to Masyaf and then to Acre.

At Acre, Altaïr is set to kill Richard the Lionheart's nephew, William of Montferrat. He discovers that William is receptioning Richard, and infiltrates his fortress at the seaend of the city. Killing the Marquese of Montferrat, Altaïr leaves to city to Jerusalem.

During of his public executions, Altaïr blends thorugh the crowd and jumps up to Addin at the stage, killing him and running from the guards afterwards. Once the alert is cleared, Altaïr returns to Masyaf.

With most of his weapons back, Altaïr leaves for Acre again. His 7th target, Sibrand, was a Teutonic leader paranoid with fear of assassins, what were made only worse by the recent murders and rumors thorughout the land. Reporting to the Bureau and investigating, Altaïr goes to the port district, where he watches Sibrand kill a scholar under accussion of being a assassin and retires to his docked ship. Altaïr navigates through the ports morons and docked boats, arriving at the side of Sibrand's ship and striking him down. The alert was sounded, and after escaping, the eagle moves to Damascus.

Altaïr gathers information about his whereabouts and move in for the kill, but finds that Jubair and all his followers dressed alike. Searching each of the burning books points, Altaïr metodically takes down one by one, eventually killing Jubair. Leaving for Masyaf After escaping, Altaïr prepares for his 9th and final target.

Robert de Sable, Grand Master of the templars, was in Jerusalem for the funeral of Majj Adin. Gathering inteligence for the strike, Altaïr proceeds to the cemetery, but a ambushed is unveiled. He enters in a sword fight with Robert and his men, and the Templar runs away while Altaïr kills the last guard. In pursuit, Altaïr charges at de Sable from behind, and when preparing to deliver the final blow, his helmet falls off. Ataïr stares at shock realizing it's a woman, not de Sable who is beneath the mask. Sparing her live for being a innocent and a decoy, Altaïr leaves for Arsuf, the location where the girl reported Robert where to be found.

At Arsuf, Altaïr fights his way through hordes of Saracen and Christian troops, eventually reaching Robert, and discovers that he was trying to convince Richard the Lionheart to join forces with Saladin to destroy the Assassins. Altaïr tries to convince Richard of Robert's plot to overthrow him, but Richard doesn't know who to trust and lets God decide. Altaïr and Robert fight to the death, and Altaïr emerges victorious.

At his dying breath, Robert reveals to Altaïr that Al Mualim was, in fact, a Templar. Allowed to leave by Richard, he returns to Masyaf and finds out that the people of the town had been put in a hypnotic trance. making his way up to the fortress, Altaïr engages in a fight with Masyaf's hypnotized guards, heavily outnumbered. And suddenly, Malik and a few other Assassins arrive. Helping him clean out the house, Altaïr sends them to attack the fortress's back, creating a distraction in order to reach Al Mualim.

Reaching the castle gardens, Altaïr confronts his former master. Al Mualim reveals that he used the Piece of Eden recovered at Solomon's Temple to control the minds of the people and ensure uther and absolute peace, and that Altaïr's mission was to wipe out the remaining templar leaders and end the crusades by sabotaging both sides. Out of the sudden, Altaïr is attacked by the nine men he'd kill, and defeats one by one. Realizing they were guards disguised as those illusions by Al Mualim, Altaïr charges at his former master, which also proves to be a illusion, teleporting around the place. Attacked by multiple copies of Al Mualim, Altaïr counters a sword hit and kills the real one, putting an end to the hypnotic trance. After hearing his last words, Altaïr takes The Apple from the side of his master's dead cold hand, and a holographic image of the Earth appears from the object into thin air, with the location of another Pieces of Eden highlighted. Malik arrives at Altaïr's side, and the memory log stops.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
After the fall of Robert de Sable and the loss of Apple of Eden, the remaining Templars flee from the Holy Land to Cyprus, an island in Greece. Altaïr leads an attack to Acre's port and meets Maria, who stayed behind. She joined him, and after seeing the events that unfolded, was convinced that the way of the Templars were not right. The new Grand Master of Templars, Armand Bouchart, become the ruler of Cyprus to presumably protect the Templar Archive hidden there, a place where all the Templars most precious secrets are kept. Altair managed to kill the Templar leaders that controlled the island and later, along with Maria, find Armand Bouchart and the Archive itself, discovering that the Templars, in fact, not protected, but evacuated all the artifacts and valuable information from it. After killing Armand Bouchart, Maria and Altair discussed their future plans, and traveled east. So their romance began.

Legacy
During the Cyprus' events, Altaïr began working on a Codex, a encrypted journal where he reported his discoveries and thoughts.
His relationship with Maria bore at least two children, and his learnings from the Piece of Eden led to a complete revamp of the Assassin's ways.

Beside the intellectual findings, The Apple's knowledge taught him to upgrade the Hidden Blade mechanism, create a firearm and a nearly indestructible piece of armor, besides other tecnological advances.

At 2012, the Templar organization Abstergo kidnapps Desmond Miles, Altaïr's descendant, to "read" the memories encoded into Miles' DNA. Using the Animus, Miles "plays" though his genetic memory oversee by researchers Dr. Warren Vidic and Dr. Lucy Stillman in order to find a specific memory about the Piece of Eden for the Templar's project bent on "a New World Order". Lucy proves to be a modern day assassin as Desmond was been trained to be in his early life, and they both flee Abstergo.

The fate of Altaïr remains unclear.

Assassin's Creed II
At 1459, Altaïr had been presumably dead for hundreds of years. His Codex was pieced together by his descendant, Ezio Auditore di Firenze, who took it to Leonardo Da Vinci to decrypt it. Leonardo used the instructions there contained to upgrade Ezio's equipment, creating another Hidden Blade, a hidden Gun, a poison blade and many others.

Also, left in a locked chamber at Monterrigioni at the Auditore Villa, was located Altaïr's statue and his unique set of armor, which was unlocked by Ezio by recovering the 6 Assassin Seals that acted as keys found in legendary Assassin Tombs.

Characteristics and personality
Altaïr was raised at the Assassin's Fortress at Masyaf, and possessed of incredible skill, quickly rose among the ranks of the order. A cold and objective person, he fully devotes himself to the cause he choose to pursue.

He had a rebellious nature, and was impetuous, overconfident, demanding, arrogant, self-centred and impatient. After the failure at Solomon's Temple, being demoted to Initiate and send after nine targets, Altaïr listens to the final words of his assassination victims, their revelations involving them and their justified corrupt deeds within the Holy Land and their cities. As his mission progresses, his attitude changes and he start to perceive more between the lines and actions of the world while drawing upon the teachings of the "Assassin's Creed", prior a guide, now truly a creed. At the end of the conflict, all of his brash and rebellious nature had been put under control, and he became a calm, focused, driven, humble, patient and wise man.

With a body in perfect shape and a determination hampered by nothing on Earth, Altaïr was one of the most respected and feared Assassins on the Order, second only to the brotherhood's leader, Al Mualim.

After the death of Al Mualim, Altaïr took command of the Sirian branch of the Brotherhood. As Master Assassin and Leader of the Assassin's Order, he proved to be a great leader, a true student from Al Mualim, but not corrupted by the Apple's power.

Smart and dedicated, his studies and determination to ensure "peace in all things" made sure the order survived to fight for that for as long as it was necessary, as he understood that the new world would have no place for the current ways of the assassins.

Also, his cold personality did not upholded his emotions. Altaír is known to have fallen in love at least twice, with Adha, who unfortunately died and was avenged subsequently, and Maria, a former Templar who became his lifetime partner, wife and was the mother of his children.

Equipment and skills
Altaïr was a master assassin and a instructor, capable of extraordinary acrobatic feats, adept of social stealth, and fully apt in the application of deadly arts.

Trained extensively, he was able to overcome any obstacle, human or terrain. No opponent were a match to him, and for the complete duration of the events at Assassin's Creed, he never received more than a superficial injury in all the countless heavily outnumbered battles he faced. He was able to get anywhere, climbing the tallest tower and jumping from the highest ledge without a hint of fear. Striking a target at the heart of Acre's fortress to slaying a high-ranking officer in front of a king, Altaïr was literally unstoppable.

Like other assassins, he was trained in stealth assassination techniques, hand to hand and weapons combat, blade throwing, climbing, urban acrobatics, eavesdropping, interrogation, pick pocketing and anything else that may help complete a mission. Besides the physical prowess, he also had extensive knowledge of the Holy Land politics and religion, which helped the assassins understand their opponents.

As a high member of the Order, Altaïr possessed a array of weapons at his disposal, comprised of a one-handed longsword, a short blade, throwing knives and the iconic Hidden Blade.

The Hidden Blade--a weapon similar to a katara-- is used for close-range assassinations. It is mounted on the inside of his left hand gauntlet, and when deployed, extends between the space left by his amputated ring finger. He flicks a trigger on a ring to make the blade appear where his finger had once been. The amputation was part of the initiation at the Assassin's sect, and it was used to ensure the commitement of whoever wielded it, giving a finger for a blade.

Altaïr also possed an ability called "Eagle Vision", a sort of "sixth sense", a strong feeling, instinct or intuition, that lets him see people's intentions. On the visual display of the Animus, guards appear in red, allies in blue, citizens with information in white and assassination targets in gold-yellow.
Behind the Scenes
The name Altaïr is an Arabic word, which means "The Flying One". In interviews, the game's producer Jade Raymond has stated that in mid-air, Altaïr's shadow resembles that of an eagle, beacuse his attire includes a point at the front of the hood (to resemble a beak) and slits through the back of the outfit (to resemble tail feathers). The second part of his name, Ibn-La'Ahad means 'son of no-one', reflecting his mysterious origins.

His face, as Desmond's, is modeled after canadian model Francisco Randez.

Trivia
* Altair also has three different voices throughout three of the Assassins Creed games. His voice in "Assassins Creed: Altair's Chronicles" sounded a bit higher and not as deep as the original Assassins Creed game. His voice in "Assassins Creed: Bloodlines" had more of a Middle Eastern accent than the one in the original game. As no information has been revealed about this, the possibility of different sound encoding can't be disconsidered.
* Altaïr possess the same scar on his mouth as Desmond and Ezio
* The Altaïr costume can be unlocked in the game Metal Gear Solid 4 by simply putting in the correct password at the extra's screen, or by having alert 50 times or below. Ezio Auditore da Firenze (born 1459) was an important figure during the Italian Renaissance - unbestknown to most history novelists and philosophers - and a member of the Assassin Order. He is a descendant of Altaïr ibn La-Ahad and the ancestor of Desmond Miles and possibly Subject 16. Ezio was unaware of his Assassin heritage until he was 17-years-old, when, following the murder of his father and two brothers, Ezio fled from Florence and took solace in the town of Monteriggioni.

After the mentoring and training from his uncle, Mario Auditore, Ezio proceeded on his quest of revenge against the Grandmaster of the Templar Knights, Rodrigo Borgia, who had ordered the execution of his father and two brothers. During his 23 year quest for revenge, Ezio managed to not only unite the Codex pages Altaïr wrote, for the first time since Domenico Auditore, but also to save the cities of Florence and Venice from the Templar Knights' wrath. Later still, Ezio was responsible for the rescue of Christoffa Corombo, uncovering a new plot to discover the "New World."
Ezio Auditore da Firenze was born in 1459 AD, to Giovanni and Maria Auditore. Until the age of 17, Ezio lived a life of luxury as a Florentine Nobleman, unaware of his father's allegiance to the Assassin Order.

Assassin's Creed II
The beginning
After a violent fight with a group of Vieri de' Pazzi's followers and later finishing his list of errands – in the process meeting one Leonardo da Vinci – Ezio returned home to find his father and brothers missing and his mother and sister hiding. Learning that city guards had been ordered to arrest Giovanni and all of his sons, Ezio made his way to the Piazza della Signoria, where his father and brothers were being held, and was instructed by his father to deliver a sealed letter to Alberti, the personal assistant of Lorenzo de' Medici and a close friend to the Auditore family. Doing so, Ezio found the letter to contain details of a plot against the city of Florence, and the Auditore family, and was told by Alberti that his family would be released when said letter was presented at the execution as evidence.

The next day, Ezio returned to the Piazza della Signoria to find Alberti presiding over the execution of the Auditores, denying any knowledge of the letter's existance. After attemping to murder Alberti, Alberti ordered the city guards to murder Ezio. After the guidance of one of Giovanni's friends, a thief, Ezio flees the Piazza della Signoria and seeks shelter in a whorehouse, ran by the sister of the Auditore house maid, Paola. Paola later teaches Ezio how to survive in the city as an outlaw, before directing him to Leonardo da Vinci, to repair the "hidden blade" of the late Giovanni Auditore. After fixing the blade, Ezio learns the location of Alberti and, after sneaking into the courtyard of the Basilica of Santa Croce, murders him with his hidden blade, stabbing him numerous times in the stomach, before proudly shouting his name to everyone present.

Now the most wanted man in Florence, Ezio and his mother and sister fled Florence in the hopes of making their way to Spain, but first visiting the Auditore family's villa in the town of Monteriggioni, as a means of shelter. During their travel to Monteriggioni, the three were acosted by Vieri de' Pazzi and his followers, but were saved by the timely arrival of Ezio's uncle, Mario, and his mercenary guards. Mario tells Ezio of the Assassin Order - in an attempt to induct him into the Order - and reveals to him that many of his ancestors, including his father, were apart of the Order. However, Ezio refuses. Enraged, Mario leaves Monteriggioni for the city of San Gimignano, the location of Vieri de' Pazzi, in the attempt of relieving Monteriggioni of its continual assaults. Guilty, Ezio decides to agree to Mario's offer and travels to San Gimignano.

Arriving outside the city, Ezio joins Mario and his mercenerys in their assault on the city, and makes his way to Vieri de' Pazzi. Briefly watching a meeting between Rodrigo Borgia, Jacopo de' Pazzi, Francesco de' Pazzi and Vieri, Ezio proceeded to combat and eventually stabbed de' Pazzi in the throat.

Following the death of Vieri, Ezio returned to Florence to prevent the planned de' Pazzi takeover and deaths of Lorenzo de' Medici and Guilani de' Medici. Arriving too late to save Guilani, Ezio manages to prevent the death of Lorenzo de' Medici – the ruler of Florence – and restore his family's good name. Despite this however, the de' Pazzis had proceeded with their planned coup and brought the city to a state of civil war. After learning the location of Francesco de' Pazzi at the Piazza della Signoria, Ezio murdered him and left the corpse to those loyal to de' Medici; although Jacopo de' Pazzi and several other conspirators were able to escape. Shortly afterwards, de' Medici publically cleared the name of the Auditore family and provided Ezio with the names of the conspirators who had escaped.

Learning that the de' Pazzi conspirators were located in San Gimignano, Ezio made his way to San Gimignano and murdered Antonio Maffei, Stefano da Bagnone, Bernardo Baroncelli and Francesco Salviati before finally locating and following Jacopo de' Pazzi to an ancient Roman theatre. Once there, Ezio eavesdropped on a conversation between Jacopo de' Pazzi, Rodrigo Borgia and the Venetian merchant, Emilio Barbarigo. After stabbing of de' Pazzi for his failure to capture Florence, Borgia revealed to Ezio that he knew that he was here and was apprehended by Borgia's bodyguards while Borgia and Barbarigo fled. Ezio then stabbed both bodyguards, before murdering de' Pazzi.

Venice
With the Pazzi conspiracy ended, Ezio returned to Lorenzo and declared his success. Before leaving the city for Venice, Ezio was granted a gift; a Medici cape, that would keep the city guards attention from him. Ezio then made his way to the studio of Leonardo, only to find that he had just left for Venice himself. Meeting with Leonardo, the two made their way through the appenene mountains to the city of Forlì, narrowly avoiding the Templar soldiers sent after them by Rodrigo Borgia.

Eventually arriving in Forlì, the two made their way to the city docks, where Ezio was refused passage without a pass. It was at this moment that the two heard the screams of a noble lady stranded in the city's wetlands. Rescued, the lady introduced herself as Caterina Sforza, and forced the dockman to grant Ezio passage to Venice. Once in Venice, Ezio and Leonardo were given a brief tour of the city before Ezio begun to seek out a way into the Palazzo of Emilio Barbarigo, although in vain. Suddenly pushed aside, Ezio watched as a collection of thieves attempted to breach the palazzo, but failed, and subsequently aided in the escape of the thief Rosa, who had been shot through the leg with an arrow. After successfuly escaping the city guard, Ezio was intrduced to the leader of the Venetian thieves guild Antonio, and together the two concocted a new plot to kill Barbarigo and liberate the merchant district.

The plot was successful, and gave Ezio the name of another Templar conspirator – Carlo Grimaldi. A government official and member of the Council of Ten, Carlo was close to the Mocenigo, the Doge of Venice and hoped to turn him to the Templar cause. Overhearing another meeting between Borgia and Carlo, Ezio uncovered a changed plot to poison the Doge and replace him with the Barbarigo, Marco. Returning to Antonio, the two sought to find a way into the Palazzo Ducale – the Doge's Palace –, searching the front gates, the rear walls and even passing over the the Basilica de San Marco; but were hampered at every turn. Returning to the piazza below, an enraged Antonio remarked at how only birds might get into the Doge's palace, reminding Ezio of Leonardo's flying machine he had seen on the way to Forlì.

After removing the city guards at four seperate locations, the Antonio's thieves proceeded to light massive bonfires throughout the city, giving Ezio the lift Leonardo's flying machine needed to make it to the Palazzo Ducale. The plan worked and Ezio breached the Palazzo Ducale, although he was too late to save the Doge. Carlo fled, crying out that Ezio had assassinated the Doge, although he himself hid not survive long. Blamed for killing the Doge though, Ezio was now the most wanted man in Venice, and was forced to flee the city guards. Returning to Leonardo's workshop, Ezio was directed to the brothel of Sister Teodora, where Antonio was presiding. Under the cover of carnevale, Ezio made his way to the brothel and begun planning the death of Marco Barbarigo; competing in the four games of carnevale to win the golden mask that would gain him entrance to Marco's private party, Ezio was successful, but found himself denied the golden mask by Marco's cousin Silvio Barbarigo and his slave Dante Moro. The assassin was successful in regaining the mask and managed to assassinate Marco, leaving to door open for Agostino – a Barbarigo not entwinned with the Templars – to become Doge.

With his quest nearly at an end, Ezio tracked down Silvio Barbarigo and his slave Dante Moro, in the process liberating the mercenary leader Bartolomeo d'Alviano and his soldiers. Having tracked the Templars to the city Arsenal, Ezio managed to break in and kill Dante Moro and Silbio barbarigo, but was astonished to learn that the plot to remove the Doge was merely a distraction so that the Templar's could move their vessel to Cyprus, although the reasons for this were unknown to Ezio.

Induction into the Order and later years
Two more years passed before word of the Templar vessel reached Ezio once again; when Rosa brought him a shipping manifest detailing the return of the ship that very day. Sneaking into the Arsenal, Ezio watched as a templar soldier carrying a Piece of Eden disembarked from the ship and made his way to a Templar base in the city. Following the soldier, Ezio assassinated and impersonated the guard, carrying the Piece of Eden to a meeting with Rodrigo Borgia himself. Finally able to confront the man ultimately responsible for the deaths of his father and brothers, Ezio spurned the Templar Grandmaster for the non-appearance of the supposed prophet detailed in the Codex prophecy. Borgia responded, proudly naming himself the prophet before engaging Ezio in battle; the battle was short and Ezio easily bested the Templar. On the backfoot, Borgia called upon the city guards and insulted the assassin for the lack of "his people" showing up.

At this very moment Mario Auditore, Antonio, Paola, Teodora, La Volpe and Bartolomeo d'Alviano appeared, driving off Borgia and revealing themselves to Ezio as assassins. With the arrival of Niccolò Machiavelli, the Assassin Grandmaster, it as revealed to Ezio that he was in fact the supposed prophet, and that for the past decade they had all worked together to induct Ezio into the Assassins Order proper. That night, they all met up again, and Ezio was formally inducted into the Order.

Over the next few years Ezio continued to serve the assassin's faithfully, defending Forlì from the Orsi brothers and defeating the Templar Dominican priest Savonarola during his purge of Florence in 1498. In 1491, at the behest of the assassin Antonio, Ezio helped to rescue the Spanish explorer Christoffa Corombo.

The following year, in 1499 the assassins finally came together once more at the Villa Auditore, with the Piece of Eden and the completed Codex in hand. Using the two objects, they discovered the location of the Vault to be under the Vatican, in Rome. Unfortunately for them however, Rodrigo Borgia had become Pope in 1492, although Mario believed he had only done so to gain access to the Papal staff, another of the Piece of Eden’s. Undeterred, Ezio travelled to Rome with a mission to assassinate Rodrigo Borgia. Fighting his way along the entire length of the Passetto di Borgo, Ezio snuck into the Sistine Chapel and struck at Borgia from above. Preparing to deal the killing blow, Borgia surprised Ezio by using the Staff to blast him away and drain the energy of those in the room. Ezio though, possessing the Apple, was safe from the Staff’s effects and the two engaged in a duel; Ezio using the same technique Al Mualim had in his duel against Altaïr in 1191. The duel ended in success for Ezio once more, though Borgia did manage to obtain the Apple and make his way to the Vault. Outside the Vault, Ezio watches as Borgia tries, in vain, to open it. Laying down his arms, Ezio challenges and defeats Borgia in a fist fight, obtaining possession of both the Staff and the Apple, but refusing to take Borgia’s life.

Entering the Vault, Ezio stood in shock as he was confronted by a hologram-esque individual naming herself "Minerva", and claiming to be one of "Those Who Came Before"; Ezio was further confounded when the hologram sought not to speak to Ezio, but through Ezio, to an unseen figure named Desmond, before leaving abruptly and Ezio with many questions. At some point after this event, Ezio made his way to Italy once more, this time to liberate his fellow assassins in the country, who were being persecuted by the Templars under the guise of a religious inquisition.

After returning from Rome, Ezio sealed his piece of Eden under the statue of Altaïr at the Villa Auditore.
Ezio was a young Florentine nobleman who lived during the 15th and 16th century. Unlike his ancestor Altaïr, he was a brought up without knowing of the assassins existence; a seducer of women and playful man, Ezio possessed acrobatic skills beyond what most had, save for his brother and father. Having left school at an early age, Ezio was without a formal education, perhaps explaining his playful nature. He came from an affluent background and had many friends until the deaths of his father and brothers drove him out of Florence. Forced to protect his mother and sister, Claudia, Ezio became an Assassin, exacting revenge on the conspirators who had betrayed his family and plotted to seize both Florence and Venice. His first victim, Uberto Alberti , the one who sentenced his father and brothers to public execution, was assassinated publicly, forcing the Auditore out of the city and to the town of Monteriggioni, where his uncle resided. At first, Ezio wanted only to stay briefly, wishing to move his family onwards to Spain, and away from those who conspired against him. However after considerable persuasion from his uncle, Ezio decides to remain and exact his revenge upon the Templars as a whole. Aided not only by his uncle Mario but also Leonardo da Vinci, Ezio managed to redeem the good name of his family in Florence, portraying the same level of loyalty his father had to the city’s ruler: Lorenzo de' Medici.

Quick to anger, Ezio often allowed his emotions to overcome him, going so far as to disrespect the corpse of Vieri de’ Pazzi just after his death. Eventually however, Ezio did manage to control his anger, and by the time he had become a Master Assassin, could control it almost completely. An explorer, throughout his quest Ezio scoured the cities looking not only for the Codex pages, but also to obtain the assassin seals from the six assassins tombs spread across northern Italy. Ezio Auditore da Firenze was a highly skilled assassin during the Italian renaissance and a leader amongst the Order of Assassins. A master of multiple fields, including theft, blending, armed and unarmed combat, free-running and long-distance combat; he is able to use a variety of weapons including two hidden blades, the longsword, throwing knives and more. As the years progress, Ezio's discoveries of the pages of the codex allowed da Vinci to upgrade his weaponry, including the addition of a wrist gauntlet, wheel lock firearm concealed beneath his left hidden blade, and a poison needle inside the other.

Born with the ability to use Eagle Vision, Ezio could access the ability to instinctively differentiate friend from foe. He also had access to a variety of weaponry and armor thanks to the various blacksmiths located throughout the region; including maces, longswords and daggers.
* The Italian name 'Ezio' derives from the Greek word 'Aetos', which means "Eagle", similar to Altaïr whose name means "The Flying One".
* Unlike Altaïr (who had his ring finger removed as a commitment to make way for the Hidden Blade), Ezio has all ten fingers. A modification to the Hidden Blade made sometime after Altaïr defeated Al-Mualim spared Ezio's left ring finger. Leonardo Da Vinci deciphers a Codex Page written by Altaïr on which said modification was illustrated, though he did mess around with Ezio and say that he had to cut off his finger as a joke. Instead of said removal of the ring finger, Assassins now have a mark burned into the ring finger as a sign of their lineage.
* It is stated in the Philosophical Codex that after Altaïr defeated Al-Mualim at the end of the first Assassin's Creed and became the leader, the Assassins were forced to realize the scope of their fight against the Templars, and had to abandon many of their traditions: like the removal of the ring finger or the ban on using poison, in order to survive.
* Ezio uses a wheel lock firearm, a type of weapon that Europe didn't start developing until the very late 1400's and early 1500's, sometime during the Italian Renaissance, making this weapon most likely one of the very first of its type to appear in Europe. Thus, many in-game citizens do not know what the weapon is. The earliest firearms were single shot and took time to reload, so will most likely be only used as a last resort weapon. Leonardo Da Vinci didn't create the firearm mentioned, but found instructions to make one from a Codex page, meaning Altaïr was the one who invented the Hidden Gun, through knowledge gained from the Apple of Eden. Also note that Da Vinci created some of the first modern wheel lock pistols, so this could be a shortened version of one.
* Ezio's face in Assassin's Creed II seems to be a mixture of Desmond's (Francisco Randez) and Devon Bostick's from Lineage .
* It would appear as though Ezio is unaware of his lineage to Assassins or that he is a descendant of Altaïr, despite learning about Altaïr in Monteriggioni and what kind of assassin he was, he never truly understands why he is such a successful assassin himself.
* Ezio is 40 years old in 1499 (15 years older than Altaïr's age in 1191); the same age as his father when his father died in 1476.
* If you move the camera to a certain angle in the game, Ezio's face has barely aged, except for the beard, even if you played through 20 plus years of his life. His voice does deepen and mature through time, though.
* Just like Altair and Desmond, Ezio has a scar on his mouth, acquired after the mission "Boys Will Be Boys", when Vieri De Pazzi threw the rock at his face during the first memory sequence.
I'm not an assassin… not anymore.
Desmond Miles is the protagonist of the Assassin's Creed series and the descendant of a long line of assassins. He is initially forced to use a machine, called the Animus, by Abstergo Industries – the modern front of the Knights Templar – to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, in their quest to locate the Apple, a Piece of Eden.

Eventually escaping with the aid of the modern-day assassins, Desmond once again uses an improved animus to explore the memories of a second ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, so as to learn the ways of the assassins in a much quicker way than normal.

Biography
Early life
Desmond Miles was born in an Assassin "hideout" in the desert, an enclave much like the city of Masyaf, where he was destined to be trained as an assassin. However, as he grew older Desmond later fled the hideout, claiming that "he wanted to see the rest of the world". He later told Lucy Stillman that he had no regrets over leaving his parents, because as far as he was concerned, they were his "wardens". At some point after leaving the hideout, Desmond became a bartender. Aware of the Knights Templar, and wanting to avoid both them and the assassins Desmond never used his real name and paid only by cash. He was eventually found, however, by a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license.

Assassin's Creed
In September 2012, Desmond Miles was kidnapped by Abstergo Industries, a pharmaceutical company and front for the Knights Templar, for use as a test subject in the Animus, a device that can read the memories of Desmond's ancestors through the "genetic memory" left behind in their descendants' DNA. At first Warren Vidic, attempted to pry the information he wanted from Desmond's mind, but was met with failure due to Desmond’s subconscious lack of confidence in accessing that memory. As such Desmond was forced to relive the memories of his ancestor from the earliest point at which he felt most confident; this then allowed Desmond to simulate the experiences of his ancestors. Whilst he claimed to be nothing more than a bartender, Vidic reveals that they knew of his past as an assassin, forcing Desmond to finally admit his past life. Vidic and Lucy Stillman tell Desmond that they're trying to access a certain memory, but Desmond's subconscious is restraining. Vidic warns Desmond that if he refuses to assist them, they will induce a coma, continue their work, and, when done with Desmond, leave him to die. Without much choice, Desmond agrees to help them.

Desmond was made to explore the genetic memories of his ancestor – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, a member of a clan of Assassins during the Third Crusade, specifically Altaïr's experiences during the year 1191 – and over several days does so under the watchful eye of Warren Vidic. During the nights however, Desmond discovers that he is able to explore the lab he is being held in, accessing the Animus computer and, after stealing his keycard, the personal computer of Warren Vidic. Through these emails Desmond learns of a 'Subject Sixteen' who had begun suffering from a "bleeding effect" due to prolonged exposure to the animus, as well as tidbits of information from the outside world. Eventually, with the aid of Lucy, the assassins learnt of Desmond's capture and attempted to liberate him, the gunfire being heard through an intercom device, although the rescue attempt failed. Vidic boasts that those assassins were in fact the last of the assassin; their desert hidehout having previously been destroyed. Lucy Stillman's actions, however, suggest otherwise, and when Desmond asks if Lucy knows anything about his parents, she responds by saying that she doesn't know, but that they probably escaped. During this discussion, Lucy reveals herself to be a member of the assassins.

Desmond eventually achieves Vidic's goal, and discovers the location of numerous Pieces of Eden. Executives of Abstergo Industries order his execution but his life is saved by Stillman's intervention, who asks to keep Desmond alive for future reference. After the executives leave Desmond suddenly accesses the "eagle vision" of his ancestor Altaïr, seeing Warren and Lucy for their true allegiances, as well as countless scrawled messages and puzzles on the floor of the main laboratory.

Assassin's Creed II
At the beginning of Assassin's Creed II Desmond is still being held within the laboratory at Abstergo, an unknown amount of time having past. One day, Lucy suddenly arrived, covered in blood and demanding Desmond to get into the Animus before Abstergo discovers what she's done. Desmond, rather confused, agrees and, inside the Animus, experiences the birth of another of his ancestors, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a joint ancestor of his and Subject Sixteen's. He is quickly pulled out though, and both make their escape.

They were quickly spotted by Abstergo security forces and forced into an engagement which Lucy quickly ends, allowing them to continue on stealthily. The two soon enter a large open room filled with office blocks, and lined with a large number of Animus machines, although Desmond's question about them are met with silence. Desmond once instinctively called upon his recently reactivated eagle vision when, at the door to an elevator, a password was needed that Lucy did not have. Once in the carpark the two are halted by yet more Abstergo guards, but are able to overcome them and escape.

Arriving at the assassin's hideout somewhere in Italy, Desmond was introduced to two more assassins – Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane –whom have been working with Lucy over the years. Lucy told Desmond that they wanted him to become an assassin, and thanks to the bleeding effect, they could achieve this in a matter of days, although it required him learning the ways of an assassin through a new ancestor; Ezio. Desmond agrees to help almost immediately, and is quickly plugged in the Animus 2.0.

After learning the ways of the assassin through Ezio's memories Desmond was retracted from the Animus, partly to test his rentention of the memories, but also to prevent the mental degradation that Subject Sixteen had suffered from being in the animus for too long at a time. Tasking him with initiating security protocols around the Assassin hideout, Lucy left it to Desmond to work out how to reach them; just as he begun, however, he started suffering vivid hallucinations of the Crusader era. At first the vision were short, and that they were nothing to worry about, but after completing the task Desmond was incapacitated as the visions became more real. Taken back to Acre, Desmond followed the memories of Altaïr once again, this time without the use of the Animus, and watches as Altaïr and Maria conceive their first child, Desmond's next ancestor.

The next day, Desmond had recovered from the experiences and returned to the Animus, neglecting to tell the assassins what had happened. He continued the watch over the genetic memories of Ezio Auditore, despite at one time being thrown out by a "corrupted memory sequence". Eventually they learn that Ezio's arch-nemesis, the Templar Grandmaster Rodrigo Borgia had, in 1492 become Pope Alexander VI, so as to gain access to yet another Piece of Eden, the Papal Staff. As Ezio's story begun to conclude, Desmond and the assassins watched deep within the Vault beneath the Vatican. Ezio found himself confronted by a hologram-esque "god" who called herself Minerva; Minerva warns the assassins of the end of the world, as well as retelling the story of the war between "Those Who Came Before", and their human subjects. The assassins are shocked when Minerva adresses Desmond by name, and it is revealed that Minerva is in fact talking to Desmond through Ezio. Desmond is quickly pulled out of the Animus though, seeing the three rushing to collect their belongings, the Templars having found their location.

Immediately after getting out of the Animus, Lucy hands Desmond a Hidden Blade with the Assassin's emblem on it, as asks for his assistance in covering the escape. Making their way into the warehouse, Vidic appears, flanked by Abstergo security official with the intent of reclaiming Desmond. The two assassins fight off the Templars with Desmond, now synchronized with both Altaïr and Ezio, performing masterfully and slaying many with his Hidden Blade. With his entourage eliminated, Vidic is left to confront Desmond on his own, but instead retreats, promising that their victory is only temporary. The four Assassins then flee north, and Desmond is hooked up to the Animus inside the van and told to continue to search through his memories for anything useful. As Desmond's hooked up, the other Assassins begin to discuss the nature of Minerva and her talk.

Charateristics, personality and skills
Despite his amazing striking resemblance to both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Desmond has very little in common with either of them. Despite being born into the Assassins Order, Desmond fled early on and lived his life independent from them; keeping to himself much of the time and preferring to stay off the radar. The only recorded incident of Desmond actually appearing on the radar was a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license, which in turn allowed Abstergo Industries to locate him.

As he was forced to relive the memories of his ancestor Altaïr, Desmond begun to pick up subtle skills thanks to the bleeding effect; these included the eagle vision, as well as possibly the ability to eavesdrop and pickpocket so efficiently. Later on, upon willingly exploring the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore, Desmond once again begun to adopt the skills he was exposed to; this time including free-running and improved hand-to-hand combat.

Desmond was a gruff individual, who held a serious outlook on life, having been aware of the existence of both Templars and Assassins all his life, although he was unaware of Abstergo Industries being a Templar company. Despite this, he was not above jesting over his situation, and would occasionally make jokes, although they rarely elicited a good reaction. A plain individual, Desmond did not wear extravagant clothing, preferring only a white hooded jacket and jeans. Interestingly, when up, the hood exhibited a beak-like feather similar to both Ezio and Altaïr.
Trivia
*He is modeled after model Francisco Randez and voiced by Nolan North.
*Desmond possesses the same scar in his mouth as his ancestors Altaïr and Ezio did.
*Desmond's clothes are similar to those worn by both Ezio and Altaïr, albeit in a more modern style. He has a hood (although it is not worn over his head), and his jacket is white - similar to Altair's robes, and Ezio's clothing, which is originally referred to as "Assassin White". Concept Art of him with his hood up show that it has the "eagle-beak" shape his ancestors' clothes had.
*Desmond acquires a Hidden Blade at the conclusion of Assassin's Creed 2. The original owner of the blade is uncertain, but it shares the same design as the one Ezio inherited from his father, Giovanni. Perhaps the design became of standard use for Assassins after the Ezio assassinated Rodrigo Borgia.
*Desmond obtains Eagle Vision from his ancestor Altaïr and his fighting and free-running skills from his ancestor Ezio through the Bleeding Effect in the Animus.
*At times during the game, Desmond's eyes appear to be a golden yellow colour, as do Ezio's, greatly resembling the eyes of an eagle, a bird of prey spotted throughout the Assassin's Creed series.
*Desmond's fighting skills during the break from Abstergo are a lot like Altair's in "Assassin's Creed", and during the Templar's attack at the end of "Assassin's Creed II", Desmond fights like Ezio.
