Subject 16 was an individual who was kidnapped by Abstergo Industries and forced into the Animus before Desmond Miles. A descendant of both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, he was also related to Desmond Miles. It is also known that he had an ancestor at the Battle of Gettysburg, in the Roman forum and connected with a Queen Isabella.

Biography
Life at Abstergo
The individual known only as Subject 16 was an Assassin captured by the Templar-fronted organization Abstergo Industries for use in the genetic memory recall program. Held within the Abstergo Laboratory at all times by Warren Vidic, 16 was kept connected to the Animus for dangerously long periods, sometimes even days at a time. This led to 16 suffering from a severe condition known as the "Bleeding Effect."

Suffering the bleeding effect, 16 began to explore the memories of his ancestors without the use of the Animus, however his inability to actually control these visions forced Subject 16 into a downward spiral of insanity, eventually culminating in his alleged suicide.

Before this event, Subject 16 was forced by Abstergo to explore the memories of an ancestor named Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who the Templars knew had located the Vault during his lifetime. 16 never relived the memories of his ancestor visiting the Vault. Draining his body of its blood to paint several cryptic messages upon the floor and walls of the Abstergo Laboratory, 16 allegedly committed suicide to prevent the Templars reaching their goals.

Legacy
Following his alleged death, the Templars were left without the location of the Vault, but the knowledge that an ancestor of Ezio’s - Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad - had once held a Piece of Eden. Knowing this, Abstergo kidnapped yet another descendant of Ezio and Altaïr, Desmond Miles. During his incarceration, Desmond spoke often with Dr. Vidic’s assistant Lucy Stillman about many things including his predecessor, then accessing private e-mails in-between Animus sessions, he learned even more. Later still, following Desmond’s escape from Abstergo and the beginning of his journeys through the memories of Ezio, the Assassins learned that Subject 16 had managed to hack the Abstergo Animus before his death, and placed twenty encrypted files, called glyphs, throughout the Animus' rendering of the memories. These hacks were saved onto the Abstergo Animus' memory core, which Lucy had taken in order to gain details and memory sequences on Ezio, and from there, onto Rebecca Crane's Animus 2.0.

After decrypting all twenty files, the Assassins were rewarded with a genetic memory dated "date classified BCE." The video, shows two free-runners climbing a large glass structure, Piece of Eden in hand; before referring to one another as Adam and Eve. The video also shows humans working for Those Who Came Before.

Subject 16's puzzles return in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in the form of Cluster puzzles hidden in Rifts. After completing the puzzles, a video reveals the message "The miracle is in the execution," suggesting that (unlike the video hidden in the previous game) the Cluster puzzles instead concealed an executable file. Upon accessing it, Desmond will then be uploaded to an unknown area within the Animus, where he is free to run through a somewhat long virtual maze similar to those within the Animus Virtual Training Program. At the end of the maze, Desmond finds a hologram (partially broken and made of computing code) of Subject 16, who tells Desmond that all hope is lost, and to go to Eden to find a woman named Eve. Before leaving, he tells Desmond to "find [him]...in the darkness."

Dialogue
After completing the virtual maze

Desmond: Subject 16?<br />
Subject 16: [laughs] Yes, yes, Subject 17.<br />
Desmond: You’re dead. I saw your blood!<br />
Subject 16: No time. It is far later than you know. Too late to save them.<br />
Desmond: Who?<br />
Subject 16: She is not who you think she is. Everything you hope to become, everything you hold dear, it’s already gone.<br />
Desmond: Explain. Please.<br />
Subject 16: Eden. She... in Eden. Find Eve. The Key. Her DNA <br />
Desmond: Tell me!<br />
Subject 16: I cannot... The sun... Your son... Too weak... Must replenish energy...<br />
Desmond: Don’t go!<br />
Subject 16: I am with you 'til the end. Find me, in the darkness.

Trivia
*In the non-canon Assassin’s Creed - French Graphic Novel, Subject 16 is shown to be alive, and is referred to as "Michael."
*Many of the Glyphs have minor, hidden messages in them. All of the decoded ones are stated in the Glyphs page.
*The achievement/trophy for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood titled ".. .- -- .- .-.. .. ...- ." translates to "I AM ALIVE." This achievement/trophy is earned by solving all of Subject 16's puzzles.
*In Assassin's Creed after Desmond gains Eagle Vision there are three messages that can be read they most likely refer to The sequels and Brotherhood The first say "We are all books filled with pages that hold an unchangeable truth." the 2nd however is placed so only a few parts can be seen. The third states "I entered The Abyss and never returned" suggesting Subject 16 is alive.
Acre (Hebrew: עכו (Akko)) is a city in Israel which features in the Assassin's Creed series.

History
Assassin's Creed: Penny Arcade Comic
On an unknown date Al Mualim sent Altaïr to assassinate a businessman in Acre. While fighting the target tried to pursuade Altaïr that Al Mualim was using him. Altaïr eventually was victorious and left Acre to return to Al-Mualim.

Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles
In the year 1190, the city is under siege by the Templars, who planned to poison its water supply, and wipe out the city's entire population. Altaïr was able to stop this plot by killing the Templar commander in charge of the siege. Even though the city was saved from Templars this time, it was nevertheless eventually taken.

Assassin's Creed
In the year 1191, the city has been recently recaptured by the forces of Richard the Lionheart from the Saracen army, which formerly occupied it. The city would serve as the capital of the Kingdom of Jerusalem during this period. It is in this city that the Christian Crusaders have established a base of operations, in order to stockpile weapons and troops. With this, they intend to march south towards Jaffa, and from there launch an all out siege upon their true target, Jerusalem, which they have come from Europe to reclaim in the name of their religious faith. In Acre's Middle District there is a large port, whose docks possess many troublemakers and drunken sailors. In the Chain District of Acre, there is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, which conceals a Templar in the incomplete spire, and is the highest point within the virtual world.

In Acre there are more than just one set of flags; there are three: the Templar Flags, the Hospitalier Flags, and the Teutonic Flags. It should be noted that each of these give their own achievement for 10 points. Acre is a much more European city than the others, unlike Damascus or Jerusalem. Due to the recent siege, the Poor District is still recovering from the numerous people killed. Dead bodies covered in blood line the streets and alleys, while the people fend off disease, despair, and the memories of those lost. The haunting stench of death constantly plagues the air. This entire district falls under the jurisdiction of the Knights Hospitalier, given to them by King Richard, and they govern from their fortress located at the north end of the district.

The Middle District is more lively, in terms of both citizens and military presence. The area is under the jurisdiction of the Knights Teutonic, given to them by King Richard. The paranoid Sibrand keeps an extremely sharp, yet clouded eye (result of paranoia) over the district. Rumors have reached him that the Assassins have come to take his life, and this has driven him to completely fortify the entire area. As King Richard the Lionheart fights Saladin and his Saracen forces, the duty of governing the entire city falls to the Regent and liege-lord, William of Montferrat. The Chain District is where he holds his power, and it is the district suffering the most under his rule. Much of the population complains about their ill treatment, while others plot his downfall. It is these actions that draw the Assassins once more to the city. Within the beautiful Rich District are notable landmarks such as King Richard's Citadel, within which is William's Quarters, a small fortress within a fortress. The citadel's interior operates like a small town in itself.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
After Altaïr discovered that the Templars were sailing to Cyprus, he decided to take the fight to them. His first step was to infiltrate the Templar harbor fortress somewhere in Acre, where the Templar ships were preparing for voyage. Altaïr, along with some fellow Assassins, successfully entered the fortress and killed all the Templars. He intended to interrogate the fortress commander, who was revealed to be Maria. He captured her and took her to Cyprus with him.

Assassin's Creed II
Due to the bleeding effect, Desmond was able to accidentally access a genetic memory without the Animus. He had a "dream"-like vision, played as a hallucination of Altaïr back in Acre, chasing Maria through William's fortress on the night their child was conceived.

Assassination Targets in Acre
In Acre, Altaïr is ordered to assassinate the following:

1190
*A Templar Captain in charge of the siege.

1191
*Garnier de Naplouse, a corrupt surgeon and the tenth Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier, who enjoys experimenting on his patients and removing himself from the world around him.
*William of Montferrat, the Regent of Acre who vigorously trains his soldiers in preparation for the "New World."
*Sibrand, Master of the Knights Teutonic who occupies the Port Area of Acre in a fearful attempt to escape the Assassins' rumored approach.

Trivia
*The cinematic video shown at the start of Assassin's Creed occurs in Acre.
*Acre is also the location shown in most of the official pre-release Assassin's Creed trailers.
*Acre was dramatically altered from the first few gameplay demo's shown at E3 in 2006. The first version of Acre had a larger area outside the city walls and could even be entered while on horseback. The reason for such a change is unknown.
*Acre appears in Assassin's Creed: Altaïrs Chronicles, Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines and Assassin's Creed II.
*Acre's climate is dramatically different from the other settlements, as it is next to the Mediterranean Sea, giving a misty and foggy effect to the streets.
*The tallest view point in Assassin's Creed is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, which is located in Acre.
*Acre is where the Templars were defeated in RL however in The Assassin's Creed series it is where they most likley focused on manipulation of goverments.
