Subject 16 was a subject used by Abstergo Industries for the Animus project. He was the predecessor to Subject 17, Desmond Miles. There is a possibility he may be related to Desmond, as their DNA match in Assassin's Creed II. It is also revealed in Assassin's Creed II that he had an ancestor at the Battle of Gettysburg and in the Roman forum.

Assassin's Creed
Lucy reveals in one of her e-mails to Vidic that Subject 16 has Far Eastern origins, as one of his ancestors was "involved in an important event" there. A different e-mail hints that his name is "Neumann". Another email also hints that an ex-employee, Leila Marino, of Abstergo Inustries was romantically involved with Subject 16.

At the end of Assassin's Creed, due to the bleeding effect of the Animus, Desmond is able to use Eagle Vision to view many cryptic messages drawn in blood. Subject 16 states in the triangle-shaped message on the floor that he drained his own body to paint the figures on the floor and walls of the main room where the Animus is located. But had he also used his own blood to paint the wall mural in the sleeping room, he would have bled out - literally - before he finished his work. It is possible that Leila's blood is used in the wall mural in the sleeping room, done before he painted the messages with his own blood in the Animus room - a murder/suicide.

The symbols painted on the walls and floors later appear in Assassin's Creed II as Glyphs.

Assassin's Creed II
Subject 16 makes his first vocal appearance in Assassin's Creed II, voicing-over 20 encrypted files that he hacked from extensive Abstergo data banks. Said files contain what he claims to be "The Truth" about the origins of humanity. The man and woman in "The Truth" video, are Adam and Eve, activating, or proclaiming that they have "the apple," which is, in fact, one of the Pieces of Eden.

These files, as well as commentary from Lucy, reveal a bit more about the extent of the madness which lead to Subject 16's death: the Bleeding Effect from overusing the Animus. More specifically, from the sheer amount of time he was forced to spend in the Animus. Lucy said Abstergo forced him to stay in it for days at a time. As such, the number of genetic memories he was forced to unlock overwhelmed him and finally, killing himself, as is implied from the 20th encrypted file (and his final words heard in-game); "Lucy, I can't wait any longer. I am ready to go... She sees me raise the knife."

Hypotheses
It is possible that Subject 16 is also a descendant of Altaïr, but from a different family than Desmond since Altaïr had at least two sons, as seen in one of the codex pages. Also, when Lucy and Desmond escape Abstergo, Lucy uses the Animus on Desmond one last time to search for any genetic memory matches between Desmond and Subject 16, and finds that the memory of Ezio's birth is one they have in common. So, it is believed that Ezio is the link between Desmond and Subject 16. The fact that Abstergo never saw Sequence 14 during the experiments on Subject 16 would imply that that 16's ancestor from Ezio Auditore was conceived prior to 1499. This could have been when Ezio spent the night with Cristina Vespucci, or later during the Memory Sequence 6 horse race side quest where Ezio slept with the quest provider. Most likely it was the prior rather than the later as the side quest could have been completed anytime after the 1499 assault on the Vatican. Rosa may have also married Ezio and beared his children, considering how flirtatios they became after he saved her.

From the truth video in Assassin's Creed II, it is clear that a portion of Subject 16's time in the Animus was set in a location only explainable as the Garden of Eden, so it is possible that Subject 16 is a direct descendant of Adam, the first man.

Also the perspective in the animus recorded video is always on either Adam's back or from his eyes ( first person and third person) which is how Ezio and Altair were viewed by Desmond.
Shaun Hastings is a character in Assassin's Creed II. He is voiced and modelled after Danny Wallace, the British humourist. He is a historian assisting Desmond by researching and giving him information about the Italian Renaissance. He is a sarcastic nerd character.

Through conversations in Assassin's Creed II, Desmond learns that Shaun was interested in conspiracies from an early age. Though he was unaware of the existence of modern-day Templars and Assassins, he realised that there was some power-struggle going on. Shaun attempted to tell others about his findings, not realising that the Templars would want to silence him. Fortunately, Rebecca Crane "rescued" Shaun, and recruited him as an Assassin. This was somewhat unconventional, as Assassins are usually born into the order, as with Desmond. He also seems to be a very joking character.

Shaun is often cynical, condescending and pessimistic. Sometimes he will have little patience to talk to Desmond, other times he will lead off into long conversations. While Shaun's annoyance is usually directed at Desmond, he does insult Rebecca's immaturity by saying "the grown-ups are talking now" - even though she may have saved his life. During the modern segments, Shaun says that he enjoys his work researching behind a desk instead of being out in the field. In a contrast to his current job, Shaun claims that he has killed before, and it is likely that he will kill again. This other side to Shaun's personality is also shown when he explains that he would like to sit in the Animus and perform Desmond's role.

Trivia
* Danny Wallace, the voice of the character, was contacted by Ubisoft when he went to the BAFTA video game awards with a friend. He was e-mailed and asked if he would like to be a character in an unknown video game which he accepted. The game turned out to be Assassin's Creed II.
* Shaun does not seem to like Desmond very much, and constantly insults him. Shorty after he is first introduced in the game, Desmond insults him following an argument.
* Shaun affirms he also provides tactical support for the Assassins on the field.
* In one conversation with Desmond, Shaun tells him that he has his own special type of ability that allows him to see information and decode it more easily. And compares it to Desmonds only "usefull" as he puts it.
You lack the confidence to step into your ancestor's body.

Lucy Stillman is an assassin and a genetic-memory researcher.

Biography
Early Life
Lucy Stillman was a research assistant for Dr. Warren Vidic. She had been working for Abstergo Industries for three years, focusing on the Animus project. Dr. Warren Vidic considered her as an invaluable asset for Abstergo for her intelligence and knowledge in cognitive neuro-science and values her highly, although he does not express it. She was a talented student at her university. She studied science but was rejected in many fields of work because of some of her beliefs in science that related, unbeknown to her, to the work Abstergo performed to achieve the information to retrieve their goals. She apparently tried everything to get a job and jokes to Desmond, 'I was this close to waiting tables.

Understandably, she was excited when she got a call from Vidic offering her a job. She accepted and worked with Vidic for an amount of time. She was also apparently friendly with a few other employees at Abstergo, but it was these same people who tried to kill her before Vidic intervened.

As the game progresses, Desmond learns more and more about Lucy. He does this in two ways.

Assassin's Creed
Conversations
Throughout the game, Desmond can speak to Lucy and get to know her better at the end of each memory segment, after Dr. Vidic leaves the lab. As Desmond talks to Lucy, she starts to tell him a bit about her past.

Lucy explains that during her university career she was ostracised for her scientific beliefs and theories. The criticism continued after university- no scientific organization or academic institute would employ her. Desperate, she was almost ready to give up science altogether. Then she received a call from Dr. Vidic, who told her he agreed with her theories and offered her the chance to work for Abstergo and to prove her theories to be true. The beliefs she was criticized for may have regarded genetic memory. Lucy is portrayed in the game to be knowledgeable about the Animus, so it's likely that, because of her feelings on genetic memory, Vidic contacted her so she could contribute to the creation of the Animus.

Lucy also reveals to Desmond that he is not the only person Abstergo is detaining- she too is a captive. She then tells him a story about how a while back, Abstergo decided to silence her to keep her from speaking about the Animus, but before her assailants could commit her murder, they were ordered to stop by Dr. Warren Vidic. She claims that he saved her life that day, and she tells Desmond not to judge Dr. Vidic so harshly, as he is under a lot of pressure.

Emails
At various points in the game you can gain access to Lucy's computer and read her emails. Desmond comes upon the codes to Lucy's emails when he finds door codes to the main room in his wardrobe, and Lucy's access pen, which was left on the Animus. It can be speculated that she planted them to give him a better idea of what was going on with Abstergo. However, this is not certain. The codes may have been left there by a previous subject, and the pen left by mistake.

From the messages, you definitely get the idea that she is telling the truth, as she is obviously concerned for her own safety and is trying to find out more information about a previous Abstergo employee who died a while back. This employee is said to have "committed suicide" but the documents relating to the death are being held as classified and are not being released.

In one deleted email, there is a conversation in which Lucy tells another person that she has been delaying the doctor from finding the artifacts and asking for the other person to send a rescue. A strange reply appears to be an attachment, but has random capitalization of letters. When these capitalized letters are put together, they form, "WE WILL BE THERE SOON". Towards the end of the game, a gunfight is heard outside, and Vidic explains that present-day Assassins have come for Desmond. The hidden message was probably a reference to the attack. If so, it would mean Lucy is an assassin, which is also shown by her showing Desmond her left hand and symbolically pulling in her ring finger to have it appear like Altaïr's missing finger, and is spying on Abstergo Industries. The V-neck and collar of her blouse, if turned upside down, are also identical to the Assassin's logo. At the end of the game, Desmond gains the ability to use Eagle Vision. When Desmond uses this on Lucy, she appears with a blue aura, confirming her to be a trustful ally.

The achievement of "Conversationalist" can be unlocked in the 360 version of the game.

The Side Story of Leila and Neumann
More spoilers...must include two figures from "bloody mural" here for openers:

The Lorenz Attractor

The Lorenz Attractor, which appears in the middle of the wall over Desmond's bed and is the central focus of the entire "mural" is emblematic of the "bleeding effect". The intricate interweaving of the lines which compose it are paths taken by a particle.

Subject 16 states in the triangle shaped message on the floor that he drained his own body to paint the figures on the floor and walls of the main room where the Animus is located. But had he also used his own blood to paint the wall mural in the sleeping room, he would have bled out - literally - before he finished his work. It is possible that it is Leila's blood used in the wall mural in the sleeping room, done before he painted the messages with his own blood in the Animus room - a murder/suicide.

Spending too long in the Animus is the issue causing it. This seems to be her main reason for concern about Desmond, although it's mentioned very briefly.

Was this Neumann that Vidic mentions in his email to Lucy about "dipping her quill in company ink". Leila operated the Animus before Lucy and probably talked to Subject 16 much as Lucy talks to Desmond (Subject 17) - Neumann's immediate successor. This all must have occurred shortly before Desmond was brought to Abstergo's Lab. Could it be that Leila fell in love with Neumann and was trying to help him and talk to him, and he killed her...then proceeded to paint the bedroom wall with her blood in his desperation and insanity?

Finally, who was Neumann? Strangely enough, a search on the name turns up someone of interest that is significant in relation to all of this. His name was John von Neumann, who died in 1957 (long ago enough for him to have a descendant). He was a Hungarian mathematician "who made major contributions to a vast range of fields, including set theory, functional analysis, quantum mechanics...continuous geometry, economics and game theory.... He is generally regarded as one of the foremost mathematicians of the 20th century."
Wikipedia. We have the Mandlebrot Set - an example of set theory and the repeating overall patterns of history. It is also an example of continuous geometry - a fractal or holographic fragment of a larger whole that is identical to the smaller part. We also have the Lorenz Attractor, which is part of Chaos Theory:

In mathematics, chaos theory describes the behavior of certain dynamical systems – that is, systems whose states evolve with time – that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initial conditions (popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponential growth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior of chaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully defined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos.

Assassins Creed is most certainly a "deterministic" game, in that there can be only one outcome no matter what you do or when you do it. There are probably millions of permutations of activities within it. (This is true of any game worth its salt!) And last, but not least, Mr. Neumann was one of the major developers of game theory.

Assassin's Creed II
Taking place within minutes of the end of the first game, Lucy is reintroduced to the story with blood spatters on her shirt, presumably from fighting her way to where Desmond is being held. Lucy flees with Desmond from the Abstergo building to the Assassin's hideout , where she introduces Desmond to two of her assassin friends,Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, and also tells Desmond about what happened to subject 16. During this time, Desmond can engage in conversations with Lucy, some of which hint toward a romantic involvement. When Abstergo invades their hideout, she gives Desmond a hidden blade, and they go to fight them. When she sees Vidic, he reminds her that he saved her, which is why she came to work for Abstergo. When the Abstergo guards are defeated, Lucy and the others' escape the hideout, and head to another one in the mountains, while Desmond is preparing to enter the Animus again to continue searching for clues, while she studies the notes and tries to figure out what the "god" Minerva meant, and also tells Desmond that everything she feared would happen, is starting to happen.

Personality
In contrast with her boss Warren Vidic's personality, Lucy is an optimistic and cheerful woman with a bright personality. She always has some encouraging words and sympathy towards Desmond Miles, though it obviously irritates him sometimes. At times when Warren Vidic attempts to force Desmond to go deeper to the Animus memory, Lucy will stop him from going and plead with Vidic to let Desmond to rest, showing her caring personality.

Trivia
* She is modeled after and voiced by Kristen Bell.
* Lucy's character model is drastically altered between games. In the first Assassin's Creed, she is dressed in appropriate business/work attire. In Assassin's Creed II, she has clothes which are much more casual, a slightly larger figure, and different facial structure: larger eyes and lipstick.
*Lucy and Desmond will most likely enter a relationship in Assassin's Creed III, given that Lucy cares very much about Desmond and (as seen in Assassin's Creed II) he apparently returns those feelings. For example, when Lucy panics because she is afraid that Abstergo will find them, Desmond tries very hard to comfort her.
*In Assassin's Creed Lucy reveals to Desmond that she is an assassin by showing him her cut off ring finger. Although it is revealed in Assassin's Creed II that the assassins no longer cut off their ring fingers, it may have later been reintergrated into the assassins creed once believable prostetic fingers were created.

Trivia
* Danny Wallace (voicing the character) was contacted by Ubisoft when he went to the BAFTA video game awards with a friend. He has been e-mailed, then asked if he would like to be a video game character (but without mentioning which one's). He accepted and it turned out to be Assassin's Creed II.
* Shaun does not seem to like Desmond very much, and constantly insults him. Shorty after he is first introduced in the game, Desmond insults him following an argument.
* Shaun affirms he also provides tactical support for the Assassins on the field.
* It is hinted that Shaun may have been the one replying to lucy's emails, considering they already knew eachother in Assassin's Creed II.
