==Biography==
===Roaming the seas===
On 10 September 2012, Gavin was contacted by an Assassin operative who called him from a public phone in {{Wiki|Brisbane}}, {{Wiki|Australia}}. The caller told Gavin that it had been three days since he had last heard from his team, and that they had failed to report again. As Gavin was giving instructions to the caller to quickly pull out of the area, the telephone signal was interrupted. At some later point, Gavin himself confirmed that the whole team in Brisbane had been eliminated.

Two days later, on September 12, Gavin received a call from an operative named [[Janice]], who was a part of an Assassin team in {{Wiki|Whistler}}, [[Canada]]. During their conversation, Janice demanded that Gavin send additional manpower as she had only two operatives with her. He replied that he would see what he could do, but this proved to be a moot point when, at that moment, [[Templars]] led by [[Daniel Cross]] attacked the Whistler team.

Weeks later, on October 5, Gavin called [[William Miles]] via cellular phone. He updated William about the status of the Assassin teams in Brisbane, [[Osaka]] and [[Moscow]]. In turn, William, who was in [[Italy]], briefly informed Gavin of the favorable progress the Assassins were seeing at his end.

===Traveling in America===
On 24 October, Gavin received a coded message from [[Adriano Maestranzi]], which instructed him to head to [[New York]], and also that William should be making contact with the Order soon. Two days later, Gavin met with William's team at an airport in Syracuse, New York, where he provided them with fake documents which allowed them safe passage into the state.

Gavin then began traveling around the [[United States]], attempting to draw the Templars' attention away from William's team. On 2 November, Gavin sent William a text from Stillwater, Oklahoma, informing him that the Templars had no clue where they were. The next day, he sent another text to William from [[New Orleans]], updating William on the status of the Assassin team in [[Florence]], which had lost a member.

===Back at sea===
On 4 December at 6:09am, Gavin and his crew picked up William's team from Vitoria Bay, [[Brazil]], after they had recovered a [[First Civilization]] artifact. Two days later, Gavin and the ''Altaïr II'' were on the South Atlantic ocean, just off the coast of Brazil, when he received a text message from William at 9:32pm. In the message, William thanked Gavin for the ride, and also included that his team had safely returned to the [[Grand Temple]] without the Templars following them.

On 6 December, Gavin sent a text message to William which informed him that the Assassin Order had identified the Templar responsible for initiating an attack on the Florentine Assassins as [[Juhani Otso Berg]], an ex-special forces soldier from Finland who had become a mercenary a few years ago. He remarked that Berg was a serious threat, but that Adriano had managed to scar him before he died. William responded by thanking Gavin for the information and told him that they would be on the watch for Berg.

On 19 December at 9:12pm, Gavin received a call from [[Harlan T. Cunningham]], the only survivor of the Florentine Assassins. Gavin was relieved to learn Harlan had made it safely to a safe house in [[Vienna]], Austria, and expressed his sympathy regarding Adriano's death. He also reassured Harlan that it was not his fault that the other Assassins had died, before instructing the Assassin to go to Rotterdam in the [[Netherlands]] and wait for further orders, adding that Harlan take it easy until then.

On 20 December at 6:13pm, Gavin got a text from William that his team had found the [[Grand Temple Key]] and were heading back to the Grand Temple to open it. Gavin congratulated him and said that he would pass the news onto the other Assassins.

===Leading the Brotherhood===
William and his team successfully opened the Grand Temple and prevented the [[2012 coronal mass ejection|Second Disaster]], but at the cost of [[Desmond Miles]]' life and releasing [[Juno]] upon the Earth. Gavin was not contacted by them for nearly six months, until on 14 May 2013 he received a text from [[Shaun Hastings]] with a coded message to pick them up in [[Peru]]. Gavin and his team sailed there, meeting with Shaun and [[Rebecca Crane]] on 21 May, and they gave him a book and letter from William.

The letter informed Gavin that William was leaving the Order, and that he had written all his knowledge down in the book for Gavin so that he could lead and rebuild the Assassin Brotherhood. William apologized for dumping this burden on him, but made clear that his decision to leave was final.

On 24 May, Gavin was asked by Shaun what he was going to do about William, but Gavin felt there was nothing they could do but wait for him to sort out his issues by himself, and that he doubted the Templars would be able to find him if Shaun had failed to do so. Shaun wondered what they would do now, and Gavin informed him they would move on with their work.

Over the next few days, Gavin and his crew made improvements to the ''Altair II'' while sailing north. On 29 May, they reached [[California]], where Gavin asked Shaun and Rebecca to be his eyes and ears in America and keep him apprised of any Templar or Abstergo activity. He received several updates from Rebecca over the next few months, and on 27 August, Rebecca e-mailed him from Oklahoma City, saying that she and Shaun had decided to try and locate Desmond's body or discover what Abstergo had taken it for. On 3 September, he received another e-mail from Rebecca, who expressed concern over the amount of resources the Templars were putting into [[Abstergo Entertainment]].

On 11 September, Gavin and his team stopped in Honolulu Harbor. [[Susan Drayton]] wondered why they were not in Osaka yet, and Gavin expressed concern over the fact that his former [[Mentor]] [[Kenichi Mochizuki]], the leader of the Osake Brotherhood, had not contacted him. [[Eric Cooper]] noted that all of their communications had gone down in December, but Gavin informed them that he and Kenichi had their own way to communicate. Susan was worried about sailing into a trap, but Gavin reassured her they would not fall into it and ordered Eric to set sail for the Philippines, and that they were going to go "shopping". By 1 October they had bought weapons from arms dealers there, which [[Emmanuel Barraza]] inspected.

On 11 October, Gavin read an article about Abstergo Entertainment's Montreal studio which included a statement from its Chief Creative Officer, [[Olivier Garneau]]. Gavin e-mailed Rebecca and questioned who Garneau was and wondered what he might know.

On 2 December, Rebecca e-mailed Gavin about the death of their Abstergo mole, [[John]], and that she and Shaun planned to leave Montreal soon. He wished them luck, sent his greetings to William, and informed her that he would make another attempt at reaching Osaka.

===Mission to Japan===
Gavin and his team arrived in Osaka on 4 December, and he took Emmanuel and [[Initiate spy|another Assassin]] to the headquarters of the Osaka Brotherhood. They discovered the Assassin cell had been attacked, and Gavin used his [[Eagle Vision]] to determine that the {{Wiki|Yakuza}}, not Abstergo, had killed one of his first mentors, Kenichi Mochizuki, and several other Assassins. He ordered his team to search the city for any Assassins that survived, along with the Yakuza who had carried out the attack.

The crew of the ''Altair II'' gathered much information over the next nine days. [[Emmett]] learned that a particularly ruthless branch of the Yakuza known as the [[Onmoraki-Gumi]] had supposedly been wiped out recently in a violent gang war, but their business fronts were still operating. Emmanuel tracked a financial transaction to the Onmoraki-Gumi's new base, but no one on the team was able to learn the identity of its new leader. On 13 December, Gavin decided that they would confront the Yakuza directly to learn what they needed.

On 17 December at 9:47pm, Gavin took Emmanuel with him to the headquarters of the Onmoraki-Gumi to demand a meeting with their head, intending to try and get inside their heads like Kenichi had once taught him. They were confronted by a guard who introduced himself as [[Kiyoshi Takakura]] and threatened to beat them if they did not leave. Gavin refused and insulted Kiyoshi's fashion sense, which resulted in Kiyoshi attacking Gavin. He was knocked to the ground as Kiyoshi began kicking him, and Emmanuel was unable to help as he reminded Gavin he was a pacifist. Several other members of the Onmoraki-Gumi emerged to watch the beating, which allowed Emmanuel to overhear them discussing how "Grandma" would not be happy with this due to how hard she had worked to hide the Brotherhood. Gavin's life was then saved by Emmanuel, who stuck his hand in front of Kiyoshi's [[Hidden Blade]] and then stopped the beating by revealing he and Gavin were Assassins.

At 1:03am the next day, Gavin and his crew were taken to meet [[Saeko Mochizuki]], the Mentor of the Osaka Assassins and wife of his former mentor Kenichi. Gavin learned that she had taken over the Osaka Brotherhood after the Onmoraki-Gumi had attacked them and Kenchi was killed, and had led the Assassins in killing the Yakuza branch's leaders and taking it over, claiming it was a good fit due to the two organizations shared history of working in the dark and assisting the common people. Gavin was not pleased by this development, but kept his criticism to himself.

Over the next two days, Gavin exchanged information with Saeko. After learning that the Osaka Brotherhood was low on supplies from their recent struggles, Gavin gave them the guns his cell had bought from the Philippines as well as the contact information for their supplier there. He was then given a new type of [[Animus]] headset that Saeko's team had stolen from an Abstergo Industries facility, and Saeko told Gavin that she feared the Templars were planning something big.

On 23 December, Gavin complained to Dr. [[Stephanie Chiu]] that she was fussing over Emmanuel's injury while he had been left to treat his own wounds by himself. Stephanie told him that he should not have picked a fight with a trained Yakuza Assassin half his age, but Gavin angrily reminded her that he would not have had to do that if Emmanuel had done his job. Gavin felt somewhat guilty about forcing the pacifist Emmanuel into situations that would need violence, and declared that the team needed an enforcer.

On 31 December, Gavin and the crew of the ''Altair II'' traveled to [[Tokyo]] with Saeko and Kiyoshi to gather supplies for their next mission. As the rest of his team preoccupied themselves across the city, Gavin ran across the rooftops of Tokyo to deal with his stress, and watched from a rooftop as fireworks were fired off at midnight to celebrate the new year.

Gavin decided that with the Assassin presence in Japan secure, it was time for his crew to move on. The ''Altair II'' left Japan on 15 January 2014, and Gavin turned to another riddle in William's codex to determine their next destination. Emmett questioned why they did not simply contact William, who had returned to the Assassin Order, but Gavin informed him that he was not aware where William was at the moment or how to get in contact with him. He added that this was their own mission to figure out, and that it would not be any fun to have all the answers from the start.

==Personality and characteristics==
While Gavin demonstrated the use of Eagle Vision to discover the fate of the Osaka Assassins, one of Gavin's men noted that it didn't come natural or as easy to him, and that he looked tired after using it. This revealed that Gavin may not have the ability through natural means, rather gaining it through training, or that he had an innate, but low aptitude for it.

He was also shown to be a capable free-runner, as he traversed the rooftops of Tokyo to deal with pent-up stress.

At some point before June 1908, [[Grigori Rasputin]] stole the Imperial Sceptre from Tsar [[Nicholas II of Russia]]. Sometime in 2002, Daniel Cross was officially inducted into the [[Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order]] and given an assignment by Dr. [[Warren Vidic]] through [[Abstergo Email Network|e-mail]]. Daniel traveled to [[Moscow]], Russia to find the "[[Prophet's Codex]]" in the [[library of Ivan the Terrible]] hidden beneath the {{Wiki|Bolshoi Theatre}}.<ref name="ACTC"/>

Attending a play there, Daniel quietly made his way through the theatre to find a hidden door which led to the library. Upon entering it, he was spooked by an Assassin sentry who intended to greet him, causing Daniel to loosen his [[Hidden Blade]]. However, Daniel pretended to be the Assassin's replacement as sentry, and the man eagerly told Daniel about the location of the Codex when Daniel inquired.<ref name="ACTC"/>

When the sentry left, Daniel opened the Prophet's Codex, written by [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]]. He read out [[Minerva]]'s speech to Vidic via his earpiece, noting the name "Desmond". Afterward, Daniel took the box containing the Codex and killed the sentry, before calling a clean-up team and leaving the library.<ref name="ACTC"/>

In September or October 2006, a virus dubbed L-11 broke out in [[Africa]]. On 9 December 2010, junior professor [[Shaun Hastings]] released confidential information on Abstergo Industries to {{Wiki|WikiLeaks}}; Abstergo quickly had the letter pulled, and Shaun abducted for interrogation. The next day, while he was being transferred, [[Rebecca Crane]] hacked the onboard computer of Abstergo's van to show that it was low on fuel. When the van pulled over to rectify this, Rebecca helped Shaun escape, and introduced him to the Assassin Order.<ref name="JMorse">[[James Morse's email]]</ref>

On 3 September 2012, the Global Weather Association abandoned the phrase "North Atlantic Hurricane Season", since occurrences of the natural phenomenon in the North Atlantic had become so powerful and frequent that coastal cities in the East Coast lived in constant fear of the storms.<ref name="AC1EmailVidic"/>

Three days later, the last American film studio permanently closed down, as rampant film piracy and competition from the video game industry had rendered the American cinema industry nonviable. Meanwhile, the USA and {{Wiki|European Union}} continued to build jointly-owned oil platforms in the {{Wiki|Weddell Sea}}, despite protests that the platforms violated the {{Wiki|Antarctic Treaty System}}.<ref name="AC1EmailVidic"/>

In 2010, William Miles gave Clay the task of infiltrating Abstergo Industries. His job was to access the personal computer of [[Alan Rikkin]], the company's CEO, and uncover the details surrounding the secretive "Animus Project".<ref name="ACR - TLA">''[[The Lost Archive]]''</ref>

Clay's efforts yielded information on the project's research funding, the name of its lead, and the location of the new facility in Italy. Thereafter, the Assassins decided to plant Clay deeper into Abstergo as a test subject of the program. On 1 February 2011, Clay was captured by the [[Lineage Discovery and Acquisition]] team and inducted into the Animus Project as Subject 16. He was forced to relive the memories of his ancestors, particularly Ezio Auditore da Firenze, for long periods of time. Though Vidic kept the true purpose of their genetic explorations a secret, Clay realized that their efforts were focused on locating a mythical "Apple of Eden"; When Clay inquired about the Apple, Vidic threatened that Clay could not reasonably expect to be released if he knew what they truly sought. Later, William contacted Clay and assured him that when the time came, Lucy would rescue him, as they were a team.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

Eventually, Clay discovered the true purpose of the Animus Project – the release of the [[Eye-Abstergo]] satellite – and decided that it was time for him to escape. However, his over-exposure to the Animus caused him to suffer from extreme bouts of the [[Bleeding Effect]]. In addition, after conversing with [[Juno]], Clay discovered Lucy's true allegiance to the Templars.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

Following this revelation, Clay was convinced by Juno to deliver a message to his eventual successor, Desmond Miles. As he plotted his suicide, Clay also created an artificially intelligent construct of himself inside the Animus by hacking the machine throughout the night.

After sending one final e-mail to his father, Clay slit his wrists with a ballpoint pen and used his blood to paint [[Cryptic Messages|cryptic messages]] for his eventual successor to find.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

===Desmond Miles===

On 6 September 2012, the media announced that Abstergo Industries was being investigated for manipulating a small town's water supply in order to test a synthetic drug referred to as "New Fluoride".<ref name="AC1EmailVidic"/> This pressured Abstergo to launch their Eye-Abstergo satellite by 21 December 2012, which was secretly a mind control device powered by a Piece of Eden.<ref name="AC1EmailLucy">''Assassin's Creed'' - [[Lucy Stillman's email|Lucy's e-mail]]</ref> The Piece of Eden originally intended to power the satellite was destroyed in the [[DIA satellite accident]], and Abstergo did not have another available.<ref name="AC1EmailVidic"/>

To that end, Abstergo kidnapped Desmond Miles and took him to their facility in [[Rome]]. Desmond relived the memories of his ancestor, [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], so that Abstergo could obtain a map showing the approximate locations of the [[Pieces of Eden]] on [[Earth]].<ref name="AC1">''Assassin's Creed''</ref>

Shortly after, Desmond escaped Abstergo with the help of Lucy Stillman. While Lucy claimed to be an undercover Assassin to gain Desmond's trust, the escape was actually a part of [[Project Siren]], a plan devised by Vidic to facilitate a quicker recovery of Desmond's genetic memories.

Lucy brought Desmond to an Assassin [[Rome hideout|hideout]] and rendezvoused with Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. With the Assassins losing the war against the Templars, the decision was made to train Desmond as a true Assassin in the fastest possible way: through the use of the Animus 2.0, which was made from copied Abstergo blueprints. As such, the Assassins intended to take advantage of the Bleeding Effect by having Desmond relive the memories of an ancestor to take on his skills, this ancestor being Ezio Auditore da Firenze.<ref name="AC2">''Assassin's Creed II''</ref>

While reliving Ezio's memories, Desmond encountered Minerva, who warned of a [[Toba catastrophe|natural disaster]] that would soon recur. In order to avert planet-wide decimation, the Pieces of Eden needed to be brought to a series of [[temples]] built by the [[First Civilization]].<ref name="AC2"/>

Soon after, Desmond and his companions were located by a team of Templars led by Vidic himself, though they were able to escape once more.<ref name="AC2"/> The group fled to [[Monteriggioni]], where Desmond continued to relive Ezio's life in order to locate the [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple of Eden]] that had come into his possession.<ref name="ACB">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref> Meanwhile, Lucy stashed a recorded copy of Desmond's sessions in the Animus at the hideout, which Vidic later retrieved.<ref name="Initiates">''[[Assassin's Creed: Initiates]]''</ref>

The search led Desmond to the [[Colosseum Vault]] in Rome, which contained a secret passage leading to [[Santa Maria in Aracoeli]]. Here, the Assassins located the Apple of Eden within a hidden vault, and Desmond attempted to retrieve it through performing a short [[freerunning]] course. When Desmond touched the Apple, his body was possessed by Juno, and he was forced to stab Lucy in the stomach. Desmond then went into shock, slipping into unconsciousness.<ref name="ACB"/>

After Desmond blacked out, [[William Miles]]' team arrived and had him placed him into the Animus.<ref name="ACB"/> During this time, Desmond relived the memories of Ezio during the search for [[Leonardo da Vinci]], where he subsequently discovered the [[Pythagorean Vault]], receiving the coordinates that would direct the Assassin Order to the [[Grand Temple]]. However, as a result of this strain on his weakened psychological state, Desmond slipped into a coma.<ref name="ACBDaVinci">''Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood'' - ''[[The Da Vinci Disappearance]]''</ref>

As Desmond's coma bound him to the Animus, he was left to try and piece his subconscious mind together. After burying the deceased Lucy outside Rome, the Assassins flew to the United States while posing as a medical team. When Desmond had fully synchronized with Ezio's remaining memories with the help of Subject 16's virtual construct, he entered into a [[Synch Nexus]] and awoke outside the Grand Temple, claiming that he knew what they had to do.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

After the Assassins entered the temple and restored a power source, Juno's voice commanded Desmond to find "[[Grand Temple Key|the key]]". To that end, Desmond began reliving the memories of [[Haytham Kenway]], a British Templar during the [[French and Indian War]] who came into possession of an amulet that would grant access to the Grand Temple after passing its initial barrier. While taking a break, Shaun informed Desmond that they needed more power cores to boost the Temple back to functionality, and the team resolved to find them. Meanwhile, Desmond continued viewing his genetic memory, this time reliving the memories of the Assassin [[Ratonhnhaké:ton]], Haytham's son with a [[Kanien'kehá:ka]] woman named [[Kaniehtí:io]].<ref name="AC3">''[[Assassin's Creed III]]''</ref>

By 16 November, Shaun located another power source in an Abstergo office in [[New York City|Manhattan]]. The team traveled there, and Desmond climbed the {{Wiki|One World Trade Center|Freedom Tower}} to parachute into the office. He was confronted by Daniel Cross, but Desmond knocked him unconscious with the First Civilization battery and escaped.<ref name="AC3"/>

On 2 December, Desmond infiltrated a stadium in [[São Paulo]], [[Brazil]] to recover another power source, which was being worn as a necklace by a business tycoon's trophy wife. Abstergo guards were present and searching for Desmond, so he blended with the crowd and stealthily made it to her balcony. However, Cross had already killed the woman and taken the artifact. Spurred into action, Desmond chased Cross, beat him and escaped with the power source via train.<ref name="AC3"/>

Upon their return to the Grand Temple, Shaun immediately located another power source in [[Egypt]]. William volunteered to retrieve it, and told Desmond to stay behind and learn the location of the key from Connor's memories. Desmond was concerned for his father's safety, and his fears were realized when Abstergo captured William after he recovered the power source.

Vidic sent a message offering to trade William for the Apple, and Desmond returned to the Abstergo facility in Rome. However, he refused to bargain, killing Cross and any Abstergo guards who stood in his way. He used the Apple to compel the guards into killing Vidic and then themselves, then left with William and the power source. Without the Apple of Eden in their possession, Abstergo put off the Eye-Abstergo satellite launch.<ref name="AC3"/>

Desmond eventually found the memory he was looking for, discovering that Connor had buried the key in the [[Davenport Homestead]] near the grave of [[Connor Davenport]], the Colonial Assassin's namesake. After digging it up, the Assassins returned to open the door inside the Grand Temple. Behind it lay an orb which Juno commanded Desmond to touch in order to prevent the [[2012 coronal mass ejection|coming cataclysm]]. However, Minerva appeared and revealed they had been misled: Juno had sought to conquer the world and as punishment, her consciousness was imprisoned. While activating [[the Eye]] would save the world, it would also free Juno and end Desmond's life. At Juno and Desmond's urging, Minerva revealed that if he did not touch the orb, humanity would survive the disaster and Desmond would be hailed as the next messiah. However, his words would eventually be twisted to serve wicked purposes, justifying abuse and oppression.

With only hours before the Second Disaster struck, Desmond chose to touch the orb, believing it to be the better choice and claiming the Assassins would stop Juno. Telling the others to leave, he activated the Eye, dying to protect Earth from the solar flare. That afternoon, Abstergo found the Temple and recovered Desmond's body, leaving his bag and broken Hidden Blade behind.<ref name="AC3"/>

===Post-Second Disaster===
By the end of 2012, Abstergo began selling the Animus as a game console to the public through their [[Abstergo Entertainment|entertainment branch]], alongside various other items such as the [[Angelus]] implant, Bodyband, and [[Herne+]].<ref name="AC3"/> They also extended into the international market, particularly with [[Brahman V.R.]] consoles across [[India]] via their subsidiary, [[MysoreTech]].<ref name="Brahman">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brahman]]''</ref>

On 14 May 2013, Shaun, Rebecca and William broke a six-month "silence" following Desmond's death, and a week later the three arrived in a coastal region of Peru awaiting interception by [[Gavin Banks]]. Gavin welcomed the trio aboard the ''[[Altair II]]'', only to be informed that William was stepping down from his position of [[Assassin leader]] and naming Gavin as his replacement. William also gave Gavin a book that contained everything he knew about the Order, tasking Gavin with rebuilding the Brotherhood.

By 25 May, the ''Altair II'' docked in Acapulco, Mexico, with Rebecca helping to devise version 2.0 of the [[Hephaestus Email Network]]. Two days later, Gavin discovered a clue in William's book containing a poem and a set of numbers written in different directions.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 29 May, Gavin gave orders to Shaun and Rebecca to return to the United States, as he needed some "eyes and ears on America". On 10 June, Rebecca sent a message to Gavin remarking that Texas "is awesome" – confirming their redeployment in the United States had been successful – and bidding him good luck. On the same day, an unknown person reacted to a magazine article that the Tunguska explosion was caused by the Assassins, not a meteorite as per the official story. They also remarked that Nikolai Orelov knew about the event.<ref name="Initiates"/>

===Abstergo Entertainment===
In September 2013, Abstergo Entertainment's Montreal branch put out an ad to hire five new employees, one each in Product Development, Technical Support, Customer Contact, Office Support, and Management. After Abstergo released the postings, Rebecca sent a text message to Gavin, claiming she wanted to investigate. Three days later, en route to Montreal, Shaun and Rebecca traveled to [[the Farm]] and found it destroyed. By 11 September, the Assassin team composed of Gavin, [[Susan Drayton]] and [[Eric Cooper]] discussed potential happenings in [[Osaka|Osaka, Japan]], as Gavin's informant there had gone "silent". Gavin then announced he would be heading to the Philippines to do some "shopping".<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 1 October, [[Emmanuel Barraza]] inspected the guns Gavin bought from the Philippine gun makers in preparation for a possible fight in Osaka. On 11 October, the day Abstergo Entertainment celebrated its one year anniversary in Montreal, Rebecca sent Gavin a text message asking about Abstergo Entertainment CCO [[Olivier Garneau]] and what he knew about Templars and Assassins.<ref name="Initiates"/> Rebecca and Shaun arrived in Montreal on 24 October and quickly heard rumors of a [[Blood Vials|Vial]] contained within the facility. Rebecca informed Gavin on 28 October that they had a mole within Abstergo helping them search, and they would find the vial in time. Meanwhile, two of the company's employees, [[Jennifer Tam]] and [[Philippe Chartrand]], exchanged emails about a [[Abstergo Entertainment research analyst|new Abstergo employee]] and the employee's involvement in the [[Sample 17 Project]].<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 2 November, an unknown Initiate recovered the blood vial from Abstergo. Jennifer and Philippe continued to exchange emails about the memories of [[Bernard Kenway|Bernard]] and [[Edward Kenway]], and Jennifer mentioned that she had a crush on the new barista working in the lobby. Over several days, they continued to discuss the barista and the "Noob", but their conversations eventually turned to a string of hackings on Abstergo Entertainment's servers.<ref name="Initiates"/>

The hackings, perpetuated by the new research analyst at the behest of IT specialist [[John]], began as a means to retrieve information pertinent to Desmond; the data was then delivered to Shaun and Rebecca, posing as the lobby's barista and courier respectively. The hacking soon turned to data on Abstergo's internal workings, culminating with information about a board meeting in [[Chicago]]. Olivier subsequently disappeared en route to the meeting, putting Abstergo on high alert.<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

As the hacking escalated, several employees were moved to containment cells in the basement of the Abstergo building, including the new research analyst. John gave the new research analyst the proper clearance to leave their cell, and instructed them to access the company's main server to remove all record of their activities. However, John's ultimate plan was for Juno – currently existing on the digital network – to possess the employee's body and take physical form. However, Juno was too weak to manifest and vanished, inciting John's rage.<ref name="AC4"/>

In an attempt to make the employee a more suitable host, John snuck into their cell and poisoned them. However, Abstergo guards broke in and killed John before he could carry out his plans. John was subsequently blamed for the employee's hacking activities, clearing their name.<ref name="AC4"/>

By 2 December, Rebecca informed Gavin that their informant had been killed, and that she and Shaun would be leaving Montreal.<ref name="Initiates"/> However, the two then contacted the new research analyst, saying that they would be happy for the help if the analyst chose to keep hacking Abstergo Entertainment's servers.<ref name="AC4"/>

===Search for the Koh-i-Noor===

In late 2013, Abstergo Industries launched the Brahman V.R. in India in an effort to access the genetic memories of [[Arbaaz Mir]] and [[Pyara Kaur]], which they believed would lead to a Piece of Eden known as the [[Koh-i-Noor]]. [[Jot Soora]], an employee of MysoreTech, was found to be a descendant of [[Raza Soora]], Arbaaz Mir's servant who accompanied his master on many adventures.<ref name="Brahman">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brahman]]''</ref>

One day Jot brought a console home, and upon using it, his fiancée [[Monima Das]] learned that she was a descendant of Arbaaz Mir and Pyara Kaur. Jot later discovered that the machine extracted memories from the operator's DNA and uploaded them to the Abstergo cloud server, and relived some of Arbaaz Mir's genetic memories himself.<ref name="Brahman"/>

Jot spoke to his colleague, [[Siobhan Dhami]], but claimed to be the descendant of Arbaaz Mir out of embarrassment about his heritage. He then traveled to Mumbai to see his fiancée at her film studio, but was followed and abducted by Siobhan and her brother [[Jasdip Dhami|Jasdip]]. Revealing themselves to be Assassins, Siobhan and Jasdip forced Jot into the Brahman V.R., believing his genetic memories would lead them to the Koh-i-Noor. However, upon placing Jot in the device, they realized he had lied about his heritage.<ref name="Brahman"/>

The Templars quickly sent [[Juhani Otso Berg]] to recover Jot Soora; the Templar commando crashed the Assassin hideout, attacking and killing Siobhan. In the chaos, Jot retrieved the Brahman device and plunged out of the hideout into the slums below. He then fled for the studio, where he and Monima were apprehended by Templar agents in a black van.<ref name="Brahman"/>

Jasdip attempted to free the couple as they sped down the highway, but caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which plummeted into the Bay of Mumbai. Jasdip managed to save Jot but Monima was lost to the bay's depths.<ref name="Brahman"/>

Jasdip escorted Jot to the Assassin hideout in the {{Wiki|Chor Bazaar}}, where Jot met another Assassin called [[Dinesh]]. Devastated by the death of his fiancée, Jot decided to relive Monima's memories in the Brahman V.R., even at the risk of exposing himself to the Templars. He revealed that Monima's ancestor was Pyara Kaur, which Dinesh realized could lead them to the Koh-i-Noor. Dinesh then downloaded Monima's ancestry data from the Abstergo servers onto Jot's mobile phone.<ref name="Brahman"/>

The Templars soon reached the hideout and Dinesh was killed in the ensuing conflict. While Jasdip fought the Templar attackers, Jot escaped with his phone into the crowded streets, where he eventually returned to the scene of the accident. He then played a video on his phone, showing his marriage proposal to Monima through her eyes.<ref name="Brahman"/>

===Osaka, Japan===

On 3 December, an [[Initiate spy]] aboard the ''Altair II'' updated their database after successfully rigging the Hephaestus 2.0, and reported that they could now upload full reports to the Initiates database. The next day, the same spy reported that Gavin and Emmanuel had found the Osaka Brotherhood's ruined compound. Using his Eagle Vision, Gavin determined that the {{Wiki|yakuza}}, rather than Abstergo, were behind the attack. They then found the remains of Gavin's contact and former mentor, [[Kenichi Mochizuki]]; Gavin ordered his men to scout the area for survivors and begin searching out the yakuza perpetrators.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 6 December, the Initiate spy reported that [[Emmett Leary]] discovered a ruthless branch of the yakuza, the [[Onmoraki-Gumi]], had recently been wiped out by gang warfare. Six days later, the spy reported that even though the Onmoraki-Gumi was gone, it was still somehow running its front-end companies. Susan tried her luck at finding the location of their new headquarters in a yakuza-controlled gambling den but failed at her attempt. Emmanuel was more successful, both winning and tracking down the new headquarters.<ref name="Initiates"/>

The next day, the spy reported that the identity of the Onmoraki-Gumi's new leader was unknown, and crew members began placing bets on what the leader looked like. Gavin claimed that the only way to move forward was to confront the yakuza group directly. Meanwhile, on 16 December, an Initiate spy in [[Philadelphia]] uploaded an Abstergo file concerning the ancestry of [[Milton Jones]], showing the latter's connection to the Assassin [[Adéwalé]].<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 17 December, the Initiate spy aboard ''Altair II'' reported that Gavin and Emmanuel visited the Onmoraki-Gumi's headquarters and requested an audience with their leader. The Onmoraki sentry, [[Kiyoshi Takakura]], initially refused and fought with Gavin. However, when Emmanuel overheard other gang members mention the Brotherhood and saw that Kiyoshi bore a Hidden Blade, he stepped forward to intervene, injuring himself on Kiyoshi's weapon. He then asked Kiyoshi to recite the first tenet of [[the Creed]], which he did successfully, and Emmanuel revealed the Assassin insignia on his dog tags. Kiyoshi offered a sincere apology before allowing them inside.<ref name="Initiates"/>

The spy reported that Osaka's new Mentor was a 78-year-old woman, [[Saeko Mochizuki]] or "Osoroshii Baba", who took over the Brotherhood when the yakuza attacked their compound and killed her husband. In retaliation, she led the Assassins to attack and destroy the yakuza, subsequently taking over the gang. She also told Gavin that she used the Onmoraki-Gumi to blend her Assassins into the city, noting that the Assassins and the yakuza had similar ways of working in the dark to serve the light.<ref name="Initiates"/>

Saeko was happy to be reunited with Gavin, but warned that the Osaka Brotherhood was still recovering from its battles with Abstergo and the yakuza. She also noted that Japan's restrictive gun laws kept them at a disadvantage against Abstergo's unlimited resources. As a tribute to the new Osaka Brotherhood, Gavin offered the guns his team had purchased in the Philippines and gave Saeko the contact details of their supplier. In return, Saeko gave him a new Animus headset that the Brotherhood had recovered from an Abstergo facility in Japan, believing that the war between Assassins and Templars had escalated into a new dimension.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On New Year's Eve 2013, the spy reported on the Assassins' holiday activities, such as cleaning the ''Altair II'' at Saeko's behest and partaking in homemade {{Wiki|toshikoshi soba}}. Meanwhile, Kiyoshi and Emmanuel sparred for three hours before going to a karaoke bar. Stephanie filmed Emmanuel singing with her phone and he swore that he would renounce his stance on killing if she ever showed it to anyone.<ref name="Initiates"/>

By 15 January, Gavin was satisfied with the Assassin presence in Japan and he made the call to move on. Again, the team took their direction from William's book. Emmett asked Gavin why didn't they contact William for the answer, to which Gavin replied that it was their mission to find it out for themselves. He also told Emmett that while William was back in the Order, Gavin did not know where he was or how to get in touch with him.<ref name="Initiates"/>

===Protvino, Russia===
On 19 February, the Assassin team aboard the ''Altair II'' solved the next puzzle in William's journal which led them to Moscow. The Initiate spy remarked that a new puzzle would help them narrow down their target within the city.<ref name="Initiates"/> Emmanuel and Emmett traveled to Moscow via the {{Wiki|Trans-Siberian Railway}}, while the crew of the ''Altair II'' sailed to St. Petersburg. With Emmett away, the spy accessed his computers and discovered a backdoor through an old Abstergo server to an Assassin lab in [[Protvino]], just outside of Moscow. Abstergo appeared not to be monitoring the lab, or even know if its existence.<ref name="Initiates"/>

By 16 March, Gavin's team had made contact with an Assassin in Moscow named [[Galina Voronina]]. During their meeting, Galina requested that Gavin's team assassinate her [[Galina Voronina's mother|mother]], an Assassin scientist who was driven insane through the Bleeding Effect. Galina further explained that her mother had created her own Animus and forced the other members of her cell into it, and Gavin's team would have to fight through the mad survivors to gain access to the lab. Lastly, she told them that her mother claimed to be talking to [[Eve]] while in the Animus. Emmett explained that it was impossible to talk to anyone inside the Animus as it is a one-way experience, and that there were few documented cases of encounters with anyone from the First Civilization, but Galina ignored him. Gavin eventually agreed to help and believed he could solve the problem using words, not violence.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 20 March, Gavin's team and Galina went to the Assassin lab in Protvino, and Galina single-handedly put down the crazed Assassins. Gavin's team pushed their way inside the laboratory and found Galina's mother in the Animus, babbling about her "[[Aita|lost husband]]" and the color gray. Emmett looked at the wall-mounted monitors and saw Juno's face in the static; when Galina killed her mother, Emmett saw Juno scream before disappearing.<ref name="Initiates"/>

Six days later, Gavin's team reboarded the ''Altair II'' in St. Petersburg and brought Galina along. Since she was the last of the Russian Assassins, Gavin asked her to join his team and act as his enforcer. Meanwhile, [[Akaki Ninidze|Akaki]] and [[Nodar Ninidze]] sent word to their contacts in Georgia, who would be armed by Saeko funneling weapons from the Philippines.<ref name="Initiates"/>

===Search for William Miles===
On 10 April, the spy noted that Gavin had been in a foul mood since they left Russia due to the Brotherhood's losses in Brisbane, Whistler, Florence, Denver, Moscow, and São Paulo. Even though William had returned from hiding the year before, he had not reached out to the crew of the ''Altair II''. Taking the silence personally, Gavin soon brought his team together and demanded that they find William. Their efforts bore fruit a week later, when they located William, Shaun and Rebecca in a secret bunker in Norway. While Rebecca and Shaun were enthused at the reunion, William and Gavin were less so, and Gavin asked to speak with the former leader immediately. Attending a play there, Daniel quietly made his way through the theatre to find a hidden door which led to the library. Upon entering it, he was spooked by an Assassin sentry who intended to greet him, causing Daniel to loosen his [[Hidden Blade]]. However, Daniel pretended to be the Assassin's replacement as sentry, and the man eagerly told Daniel about the location of the Codex when Daniel inquired.<ref name="ACTC"/>

When the sentry left, Daniel opened the Prophet's Codex, written by [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]]. He read out [[Minerva]]'s speech to Vidic via his earpiece, noting the name "Desmond". On 9 December 2010, junior professor [[Shaun Hastings]] released confidential information on Abstergo Industries to {{Wiki|WikiLeaks}}; Abstergo quickly had the letter pulled, and Shaun abducted for interrogation. The next day, while he was being transferred, [[Rebecca Crane]] hacked the onboard computer of Abstergo's van to show that it was low on fuel. When the van pulled over to rectify this, Rebecca helped Shaun escape, and introduced him to the Assassin Order.<ref name="JMorse">[[James Morse's email]]</ref>

In 2010, William Miles gave Clay the task of infiltrating Abstergo Industries. His job was to access the personal computer of [[Alan Rikkin]], the company's CEO, and uncover the details surrounding the secretive "Animus project".<ref name="ACR - TLA">''[[The Lost Archive]]''</ref>

Clay's efforts yielded information on the project's research funding, the name of its lead, and the location of the new facility in Italy. Thereafter, the Assassins decided to plant Clay deeper into Abstergo as a test subject of the program. He was informed that there was a mole already inside Abstergo by the name of [[Lucy Stillman]], who would aid him in his escape when the time came.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

On 1 February 2011, Clay was captured by the [[Lineage Discovery and Acquisition]] team and inducted into the Animus Project as Subject 16. He was forced to relive the memories of his ancestors, particularly Ezio Auditore da Firenze, for long periods of time. Even though Vidic kept the true purpose of their genetic explorations a secret, Clay realized that their efforts were focused on locating a mythical "Apple of Eden"; When Clay inquired about the Apple, Vidic threatened that Clay could not reasonably expect to be released if he knew what they truly sought. Later, William contacted Clay and told him to focus on his task reasoning that when the time came, Lucy would rescue him, as they were a team.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

Eventually, Clay discovered the true purpose of the Animus project – being the release of the [[Eye-Abstergo]] satellite – and decided that it was time for him to escape. However, his over-exposure to the Animus caused him to suffer from extreme bouts of the [[Bleeding Effect]]. In addition, after conversing with [[Juno]], Clay discovered Lucy's true allegiance to the Templars.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

Following this revelation, Clay was convinced by Juno to deliver a message to his eventual successor, Desmond Miles. As he plotted his suicide, Clay also created an artificially intelligent construct of himself inside the Animus by hacking the machine throughout the night.

After sending one final e-mail to his father, Clay slit his wrists with a ballpoint pen and used his blood to paint [[Cryptic Messages|cryptic messages]] for his eventual successor to find.<ref name="ACR - TLA"/>

On 6 September 2012, the media announced that Abstergo Industries was being investigated for manipulating a small town's water supply in order to test a synthetic drug referred to as "New Fluoride".<ref name="AC1EmailVidic"/> This pressured Abstergo to launch their Eye-Abstergo satellite by 21 December 2012, which was secretly a mind control device powered by a Piece of Eden.<ref name="AC1EmailLucy">''Assassin's Creed'' - [[Lucy Stillman's email|Lucy's e-mail]]</ref> The Piece of Eden intended to power the satellite was destroyed in the [[DIA satellite accident]], and Abstergo did not have another available.<ref name="AC1EmailVidic"/>

To that end, Abstergo kidnapped Desmond Miles and took him to their facility in [[Rome]]. Desmond relived the memories of his ancestor, [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], so that Abstergo could obtain a map showing the approximate locations of the [[Pieces of Eden]] on [[Earth]].<ref name="AC1">''Assassin's Creed''</ref>

Shortly after, Desmond escaped Abstergo with the help of Lucy Stillman. While Lucy claimed to be an undercover Assassin to gain Desmond's trust, the escape was actually a part of [[Project Siren]], a plan devised by Vidic to facilitate a quicker recovery of Desmond's genetic memories.

Lucy brought Desmond to an Assassin [[Rome hideout|hideout]] and rendezvoused with Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. With the Assassins losing the war against the Templars, the decision was made to train Desmond as a true Assassin in the fastest possible way: through the use of the Animus 2.0, which was made from copied Abstergo blueprints. As such, the Assassins intended to take advantage of the Bleeding Effect by having Desmond relive the memories of an ancestor to take on his skills, this ancestor being Ezio Auditore da Firenze.<ref name="AC2">''Assassin's Creed II''</ref>

While reliving Ezio's memories, Desmond encountered Minerva, who warned of a [[Toba catastrophe|natural disaster]] that would soon recur. In order to avert planet-wide decimation, the Pieces of Eden needed to be brought to a series of [[temples]] built by the [[First Civilization]].<ref name="AC2"/>

Soon after, Desmond and his companions were located by a team of Templars led by Vidic himself, though they were able to escape once more.<ref name="AC2"/> The group then fled to [[Monteriggioni]], where Desmond continued to relive Ezio's life in order to locate the [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple of Eden]] that had come into his possession.<ref name="ACB">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref> Meanwhile, Lucy had stashed a recorded copy of Desmond's sessions in the Animus at the hideout, which Vidic later retrieved.<ref name="Initiates">''[[Assassin's Creed: Initiates]]''</ref>

The search led Desmond to the [[Colosseum Vault]] in Rome, which contained a secret passage leading to [[Santa Maria in Aracoeli]]. Here, the Assassins located the Apple of Eden within a hidden vault, and Desmond attempted to retrieve it through performing a short [[freerunning]] course. When Desmond touched the Apple, his body was possessed by Juno, and he was ultimately forced to stab Lucy in the stomach. Desmond then went into shock, slipping into unconsciousness.<ref name="ACB"/>

After Desmond blacked out, [[William Miles]]' team arrived and had him placed him into the Animus.<ref name="ACB"/> During this time, Desmond relived the memories of Ezio during the search for [[Leonardo da Vinci]], where he subsequently discovered the [[Pythagorean Vault]], receiving the coordinates that would direct the Assassin Order to the [[Grand Temple]]. As Desmond's coma bound him to the Animus, he was left to try and piece his subconscious mind together. After burying the deceased Lucy outside Rome, the Assassins flew to the United States while posing as a medical team. When Desmond had fully synchronized with Ezio's remaining memories with the help of a virtual construct of Subject 16, he entered into a [[Synch Nexus]] and awoke outside the Grand Temple, claiming that he knew what they had to do.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

After the Assassins entered the temple and restored a power source, Juno's voice commanded Desmond to find "[[Grand Temple Key|the key]]". To that end, Desmond began reliving the memories of [[Haytham Kenway]], a British Templar during the [[French and Indian War]] who came into possession of an amulet that would gain access to the Grand Temple after passing its initial barrier. While taking a break, Shaun informed Desmond that they needed more power cores to boost the Temple back to functionality, for which the team resolved to find them. Meanwhile, Desmond continued viewing his genetic memory, this time reliving the memories of [[Ratonhnhaké:ton]], Haytham's son with [[Kaniehtí:io]], a [[Kanien'kehá:ka]] woman who aided him in his search for the Temple and short-term lover. Ratonhnhaké:ton eventually became an Assassin during the [[American Revolutionary War]], going on to adopt the name of Connor.<ref name="AC3">''[[Assassin's Creed III]]''</ref>

By 16 November, Shaun located another power source in an Abstergo office in [[New York City|Manhattan]]. The team traveled there, and Desmond climbed the {{Wiki|One World Trade Center|Freedom Tower}} to parachute into the office. He was confronted by Daniel Cross, but Desmond knocked him unconscious with the First Civilization battery and escaped.<ref name="AC3"/>

On 2 December, Desmond came to a stadium in [[São Paulo]], [[Brazil]] to recover another power source, which was being worn as a necklace by a business tycoon's trophy wife. Abstergo guards were present and searching for Desmond, so he blended with the crowd and stealthily made it to her viewing balcony. However, Cross had already killed the woman and taken the artifact. Spurred into action, Desmond chased Cross, beat him and escaped with the power source via train.<ref name="AC3"/>

Upon their return to the Grand Temple, Shaun immediately located another power source in [[Egypt]], but William ordered Desmond to stay behind as he still hadn't learned the location of the key from Connor's memories. Desmond was concerned for his father's safety, and his fears were realized when Abstergo captured William after he recovered the power source; Vidic sent a message offering to trade William for the Apple. Desmond adamantly returned to the Abstergo facility in Rome, but refused to bargain, killing Cross and any Abstergo guards who stood in his way. He then used the Apple to compel the guards into killing Vidic before they perished to the Apple's overwhelming power, and left with William and the power source. Without the Apple of Eden in their possession, Abstergo put off the Eye-Abstergo satellite launch.<ref name="AC3"/>

Desmond eventually found the memory he was looking for, discovering that Connor had buried the key in the [[Davenport Homestead]] near the grave of [[Connor Davenport]] – the Colonial Assassin's namesake. After digging it up, the Assassins returned to open the door inside the Grand Temple. Behind it lay an orb which Juno commanded Desmond to touch in order to prevent the [[2012 coronal mass ejection|oncoming cataclysm]]. However, Minerva appeared and revealed they had been misled: Juno had sought to conquer the world and her consciousness was imprisoned. While activating [[the Eye]] would save the world, it would also free Juno and end Desmond's life. Minerva then offered the compromise of allowing the disaster to occur, which would lead Desmond to be hailed as a savior, effectually restarting all of civilization but keeping Juno entombed in the Grand Temple.

With only hours before the Second Disaster struck, Desmond chose to touch the orb, acknowledging the Assassins would find a way to stop Juno. Telling the others to leave, he activated the Eye, choosing to die to save Earth from the solar flare. That afternoon, Abstergo found the Temple and recovered Desmond's body, leaving his bag and broken Hidden Blade behind.<ref name="AC3"/>

===Post-Second Disaster events===
By the end of 2012, Abstergo began selling the Animus as a game console to the public through their [[Abstergo Entertainment|entertainment branch]], alongside various other items such as the [[Angelus]] implant, Bodyband, and [[Herne+]].<ref name="AC3"/>

By 14 May 2013, Shaun, Rebecca and William broke a six-month "silence" following Desmond's death. By 20 May, the three arrived in a coastal region of Peru awaiting interception by [[Gavin Banks]]. Gavin welcomed the trio aboard the ''[[Altair II]]'', only to be informed that William was stepping down from his position of [[Assassin leader]] and naming Gavin as his replacement. William also gave Gavin a book that contained everything he knew about the Order, tasking Gavin to rebuild the Brotherhood.

By 25 May, the ''Altair II'' docked in Acapulco, Mexico, with Rebecca helping to devise version 2.0 of the [[Hephaestus Email Network]]. Two days later, Gavin discovered a clue in William's book containing a poem and a set of numbers written in different directions.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 29 May, Gavin gave orders to Shaun and Rebecca to return to the United States, as he needed some "eyes and ears on America". On 10 June, Rebecca sent a message to Gavin remarking that Texas "is awesome" – confirming their redeployment in the United States – and bidding him good luck. On the same day, an unknown person reacted to a magazine article that the Tunguska explosion was caused by the Assassins, not a meteorite as per the official story. They also remarked that Nikolai Orelov knew about the event.<ref name="Initiates"/>

By 27 August, Rebecca sent a text message to Gavin about her and Shaun's plan to retrieve Desmond's body and Abstergo's plans for Desmond's genetic info.<ref name="Initiates"/>

===Abstergo Entertainment===
By 3 September, Abstergo Entertainment's Montreal branch was hiring five people for the areas of Product Development, Technical Support, Customer Contact, Office Support, and Management. After Abstergo released the postings, Rebecca sent a text message to Gavin, claiming she wanted to investigate. Three days later, Shaun and Rebecca traveled to [[the Farm]] and found it destroyed. By 11 September, the Assassin team composed of Gavin, [[Susan Drayton]] and [[Eric Cooper]] discussed the happenings in Osaka, Japan, as Gavin's informant there had gone "silent". Gavin then announced he would be heading to the Philippines to do some "shopping".<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 1 October, [[Emmanuel Barraza]] inspected the guns Gavin bought from the Philippine gun makers in preparation for a possible fight in Osaka. By 11 October, the day Abstergo Entertainment celebrated one year in Montreal, Rebecca sent Gavin a text message asking about Abstergo Entertainment CCO [[Olivier Garneau]] and what he knew about Templars and Assassins.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 24 October, Rebecca and Shaun arrived in Montreal, and four days later, the two heard rumors of a vial in the Abstergo Entertainment building. Rebecca informed Gavin that Shaun and herself had infiltrated Abstergo; on the same day, two of the company's employees, [[Jennifer Tam]] and [[Philippe Chartrand]], exchanged emails about a [[Abstergo Entertainment research analyst|new employee]] and the employee's involvement in the [[Sample 17 Project]].<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 2 November, an unknown Initiate recovered a [[Blood vials|blood vial]] from Abstergo. Jennifer and Philippe continued to exchange emails about the memories of [[Bernard Kenway|Bernard]] and [[Edward Kenway]], and Jennifer mentioned that she had a crush on the new barista working in the lobby, who happened to be Shaun. Over several days, they continued to discuss Shaun and the "Noob"; however, their conversations eventually turned to a string of hack jobs targeted at Abstergo Entertainment's servers.<ref name="Initiates"/>

The hackings, perpetuated by the new research analyst at the behest of IT specialist [[John]], began as a means to retrieve information pertinent to Desmond; the data was then delivered to Shaun and Rebecca, who were posing as the lobby's barista and courier respectively. The hacking soon turned to data on Abstergo's internal workings, culminating with information about an Abstergo board meeting in [[Chicago]]. Olivier subsequently disappeared en route to the meeting, putting Abstergo on high alert.<ref name="AC4">''[[Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag]]''</ref>

As the hacking escalated, several employees were moved to containment cells in the basement of the Abstergo building, including the new research analyst. John gave the new research analyst the proper clearance to leave their cell, and instructed them to access the company's main server to remove all record of their activities. However, John's ultimate plan was for Juno – currently existing on the digital network – to possess the employee's body and take physical form. However, Juno was too weak to manifest and vanished, inciting John's rage.<ref name="AC4"/>

In an attempt to make the employee a more suitable host, John snuck into their cell and poisoned them. However, Abstergo guards broke in and killed John before he could carry out his plans. John was subsequently blamed for the employee's hacking activities, clearing their name.<ref name="AC4"/>

By 2 December, Rebecca informed Gavin that their informant had been killed, and that she and Shaun would be leaving Montreal.<ref name="Initiates"/> However, the two then contacted the new research analyst, saying that they would be happy for the help if the analyst chose to keep hacking Abstergo Entertainment's servers.<ref name="AC4"/>

In late 2013, [[Abstergo Industries]] began to distribute [[Brahman V.R.]] consoles across [[India]] via their subsidiary, [[MysoreTech]]. This was in an effort to access the genetic memories of [[Arbaaz Mir]] and [[Pyara Kaur]] in order to find a Piece of Eden known as the [[Koh-i-Noor]]. [[Jot Soora]], an employee of MysoreTech, was found to be a descendant of [[Raza Soora]], Arbaaz Mir's servant, who accompanied his master on many adventures.<ref name="Brahman">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brahman]]''</ref>

One day Jot brought a console home, and upon using it, his fiancée [[Monima Das]] learned that she was a descendant of Arbaaz Mir and Pyara Kaur. Jot later discovered that the machine extracted memories from the operator's DNA and uploaded them to the Abstergo cloud server. Jot then accessed the cloud and relived some of Arbaaz Mir's genetic memories.<ref name="Brahman"/>

Jot spoke to his colleague, [[Siobhan Dhami]], but claimed to be the descendant of Arbaaz Mir out of embarrassment for his heritage. He then traveled to Mumbai to see his fiancée at her film studio, but was followed and abducted by Siobhan and her brother [[Jasdip Dhami|Jasdip]]. Revealing themselves to be Assassins, Siobhan and Jasdip forced Jot into the Brahman V.R., believing his genetic memories would lead them to the Koh-i-Noor. However, upon placing Jot in the device, they realized he had lied about his heritage.<ref name="Brahman"/>

The Templars quickly sent [[Juhani Otso Berg]] to recover Jot Soora; the Templar commando crashed the Assassin hideout, attacking and killing Siobhan. In the chaos, Jot retrieved the Brahman device and plunged out of the hideout into the slums below. He then fled for the studio, where he and Monima were then apprehended by Templar agents in a black van.<ref name="Brahman"/>

Jasdip attempted to free the couple as they sped down the highway, but caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which plummeted into the Bay of Mumbai; Jasdip managed to save Jot but Monima was lost in the bay's murky depths.<ref name="Brahman"/>

Upon being escorted there, Jot took refuge at the Assassin hideout in the {{Wiki|Chor Bazaar}}, where he met another Assassin called [[Dinesh]]. Devastated by the death of his fiancée, Jot decided to relive Monima's memories in the Brahman V.R., even at the risk of exposing himself to the Templars. He revealed that Monima's ancestor was Pyara Kaur, which Dinesh realized could lead them to the Koh-i-Noor. Dinesh then downloaded Monima's ancestry data from the Abstergo servers onto Jot's mobile phone.<ref name="Brahman"/>

The Templars soon reached the hideout and Dinesh was killed in the ensuing conflict. While Jasdip fought the Templar attackers, Jot escaped with his phone into the crowded streets, where he eventually returned to the scene of the accident and played a video on his phone, showing his marriage proposal to Monima through her eyes.<ref name="Brahman"/>

===Osaka, Japan===

On 3 December, an [[Initiate spy]] aboard the ''Altair II'' updated their database after successfully rigging the Hephaestus 2.0, and reported that they could now upload full reports to the Initiates database. The next day, the same spy reported that Gavin and Emmanuel had uncovered the ruined compound of the Order's [[Osaka]] chapter. Using his Eagle Vision, Gavin determined that the {{Wiki|yakuza}}, rather than Abstergo, were behind the attack. They then found the remains of Gavin's contact and former mentor, [[Kenichi Mochizuki]], for which Gavin ordered his men to scout the area for survivors and begin searching out the yakuza perpetrators.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 6 December, the Initiate spy reported that [[Emmett Leary]] had discovered a ruthless branch of the yakuza, the [[Onmoraki-Gumi]], had recently been wiped out by gang warfare. Six days later, the spy reported that even though the Onmoraki-Gumi was gone, it was still somehow running its front-end companies. Susan tried her luck at finding the location of their new headquarters in a yakuza-controlled gambling den but failed at her attempt. Emmanuel was more successful, both winning and tracking down the new headquarters.<ref name="Initiates"/>

The next day, the spy reported that the identity of the Onmoraki-Gumi's new leader was unknown, and crew members began placing bets on what the leader looked like. Gavin claimed that the only way to move forward was to confront the yakuza group directly. Meanwhile, on 16 December, an Initiate spy in [[Philadelphia]] uploaded an Abstergo file concerning the ancestry of [[Milton Jones]], leading to the latter's connection to the Assassin [[Adéwalé]].<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 17 December, the Initiate spy aboard ''Altair II'' reported that Gavin and Emmanuel visited the Onmoraki-Gumi's headquarters and requested an audience with their leader. The Onmoraki sentry, [[Kiyoshi Takakura]], initially refused and entered into a scuffle with Gavin. However, when Emmanuel overheard other gang members mention the Brotherhood and saw that Kiyoshi bore a Hidden Blade, he stepped forward to intervene, injuring himself on Kiyoshi's weapon. He then asked Kiyoshi to recite the first tenet of [[the Creed]], which he did successfully, and Emmanuel revealed the Assassin insignia on his dog tags. Kiyoshi offered a sincere apology before allowing them inside.<ref name="Initiates"/>

The spy reported that Osaka's new Mentor was a 78-year old woman known as [[Saeko Mochizuki]] or "Osoroshii Baba", who took over the Brotherhood when the yakuza attacked their compound and killed her husband, Gavin's former mentor Kenichi Mochizuki. In retaliation, she led the Assassins to attack and destroy the yakuza, subsequently taking over the gang. She also told Gavin that she used the Onmoraki-Gumi to blend her Assassins into the city, noting that the Assassins and the yakuza had similar ways of working in the dark to serve the light.<ref name="Initiates"/>

Having taken Gavin's team three days to establish contact, Saeko was happy to be reunited with Gavin, but warned that the Osaka Brotherhood was still recovering from its battles with Abstergo and the yakuza. She also noted that Japan's restrictive gun laws kept them at a disadvantage against Abstergo's unlimited resources. As a tribute to the new Osaka Brotherhood, Gavin offered the guns his team had purchased in the Philippines and gave Saeko the contact details of their supplier. In return, Saeko gave him a new Animus headset that the Brotherhood had recovered from an Abstergo facility in Japan, believing that the war between the Assassins and the Templars had escalated into a new dimension.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 23 December, the Initiate spy reported that while Dr. Stephanie Chiu changed the bandage on Emmanuel's hand, Gavin complained that Emmanuel was not doing his job as Gavin was turned into a "living hamburger" when Kiyoshi beat him up. The spy noted that Emmanuel vowed never to take a human life because of what happened on his first assignment as an Assassin. Gavin then grumbled that they needed an enforcer.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On New Year's Eve 2013, the spy reported that Susan was embarrassed when Saeko inspected her ship for cleanliness and dragged Eric Cooper and the Initiate spy along to help tidy. After they accomplished their work, Saeko cooked them homemade {{Wiki|toshikoshi soba}} as a reward for their efforts. Meanwhile, Kiyoshi and Emmanuel sparred for three hours before going to a karaoke bar. Stephanie filmed Emmanuel singing with her phone and he swore that he would renounce his stance on killing if she ever showed it to anyone.<ref name="Initiates"/>

By 15 January, the Initiate spy reported that Gavin was satisfied with the Assassin presence in Japan and he made the call to move on. Again, the team took their direction from William's book. Emmett asked Gavin why didn't they contact William for the answer, to which Gavin replied that it was their mission to find it out for themselves. He also told Emmett that while William was back in the Order, Gavin did not know where he was or how to get in touch with him.<ref name="Initiates"/>

===Protvino, Russia===
By 7 February, an Initiates spy in Abstergo Entertainment reported that he fixed a glitch in the Animus Omega so that the simulation would run at peak performance to obtain the information they needed.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 19 February, the Assassin team aboard the ''Altair II'' solved the next puzzle in William's journal which led them to Moscow. The Initiate spy remarked that a new puzzle would help them narrow down their target within the city.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 7 March, the spy reported that Gavin, Emmanuel and Emmett were hurtling towards Moscow via the {{Wiki|Trans-Siberian Railway}}, while the crew of the ''Altair II'' sailed to St. Petersburg. With Emmett away, the spy took the chance to peek at Emmett's computers; he discovered a backdoor through an old Abstergo server to an Assassin lab in [[Protvino]], just outside of Moscow. Abstergo appeared not to be monitoring the lab, or even know if its existence.<ref name="Initiates"/>

By 16 March, the spy reported that Gavin's team had made contact with an Assassin in Moscow named [[Galina Voronina]]. During their meeting, Galina requested that Gavin's team assassinate her [[Galina Voronina's mother|mother]], an Assassin scientist who was driven insane through the Bleeding Effect. Galina further explained that her mother had created her own Animus and forced the other members of her cell into it, and Gavin's team would need to fight their way through the mad survivors to gain access to the Protvino lab. Galina also told them that her mother claimed to be talking to [[Eve]] while in the Animus.<ref name="Initiates"/>

Emmett explained that it was impossible to talk to anyone inside the Animus as it is a one-way experience, but Galina ignored him. Emmett also explained that there were few documented cases of encounters with anyone from the First Civilization or that era. Regardless, Gavin agreed to help and believed he could solve the problem using words, not violence.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 20 March, Gavin's team and Galina went to the Assassin lab in Protvino. Since the facility was infested with deranged Assassins, the team – except Emmanuel – brought guns for protection. Galina, armed with only two Hidden Blades, single-handedly put the crazed Assassins out of their misery, including her twin sister. From there, Gavin's team pushed their way inside the laboratory and found Galina's mother, who was babbling about her "[[Aita|lost husband]]" and the color gray. During this time, Emmett looked at the wall-mounted monitors, and saw Juno's face through a layer of static. When Galina finally put her mother out of her misery, Emmett saw Juno scream before she disappeared.<ref name="Initiates"/>

Six days later, the Initiate spy aboard the ''Altair II'' reported that Gavin's team met them at St. Petersburg and brought Galina along. Since she was the last of the Russian Assassins, Gavin convinced her to join his team on the boat, and that judging by her performance in the Assassin lab, he had finally got his wish for an enforcer. Eric then asked Galina how she avoided doing time in her mother's Animus, to which Galina replied that she hadn't, and she learned to fight from her ancestors, but she avoided going mad from the Bleeding Effect. Meanwhile, [[Akaki Ninidze|Akaki]] and [[Nodar Ninidze]] sent word to their contacts in Georgia, who would be armed by Saeko funneling weapons from the Philippines.<ref name="Initiates"/>

===Search for William Miles===

On 10 April, the spy noted that Gavin had been in a foul mood since they left Russia due to Brotherhood's losses in Brisbane, Whistler, Florence, Denver, Moscow, and São Paulo. Even though William had returned from hiding the year before, he had not reached out to the crew of the ''Altair II'' and Gavin had begun to take the silence personally.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 24 April, Gavin brought the crew of the ''Altair II'' together and slammed William's journal down in front of them, demanding that they find the former leader.<ref name="Initiates"/>

On 1 May, Gavin and his crew were reunited with William, as well as Shaun and Rebecca, in Norway, though Gavin was less than pleased, asking to talk with him immediately. When Shaun and Rebecca greeted him, he was no less friendlier to them, saying "You two are next on my shit list."
