Mario Auditore (1434 - January 2, 1500) was an Italian condottiero and the ruler of Monteriggioni since 1454. He also was the Grand Master of the Assassin Order until his death in 1500.

Biography
Early life
Mario was most likely born in Monteriggioni, Tuscany, and was the elder brother of Giovanni, who was born when Mario was two years old. Mario came from a bloodline of notable Assassins and thus also became one, starting his training at a young age.

When he was six years old, Mario played an important role in the Battle of Anghiari, where he alerted the condottiero Micheletto Attendolo to dust clouds over the road, signaling a surprise advance on the Florentines by the Milanese troops. The attack was stopped, and the Florentines won the battle. After this battle, he spent most of his life not aiding the Florentines, but defending Monteriggioni from their persistent attacks.

Ruler of Monteriggioni
In 1454, after Mario's younger brother, Giovanni, decided to move to Florence to pursue a career in banking, and after their father had died, Mario became the lone ruler of Monteriggioni. Mario remained at the Villa Auditore , and exchanged letters with Giovanni to keep in touch. In one of these letters, Mario defended his decision to stay in Monteriggioni by writing that he "preferred fighting like a man, to filling out balance sheets." It is insinuated that he rarely saw the family after that.

Under Mario's rule, Monteriggioni temporarily had a time of prosperity. Mario opened several shops and guilds in the city and greatly increased the city's defenses, in order to withstand Florentine attacks. In 1454, he discovered a Florentine informant living in Monteriggioni, Luciano Pezzati, and faced his men with some of his own. He dueled Luciano, barely defeating him, and had him dragged to the Villa Auditore. From Luciano, he found out that Florence was sending the condottiero Federico da Montefeltro to lead an attack on Monteriggioni. Due to Mario's leadership, the city was successfully defended and the attack was a failure.

Eventually, Luciano Pezatti confessed the truth behind the siege, that the Florentines attacked in search of a mysterious artifact in Monteriggioni. Mario, curious as to what this might be, gathered his architects and historians, eventually discovering that the city well was once drained and excavated. Together with a miner and some of his men, he set foot inside the well. While at first they did not find anything, Mario saw that the miner's flame was flickering while near the back wall, indicating the presence of wind. Together, they pushed against the wall and found a hidden corridor, filled with various deadly traps. Members of their group were caught up in the traps, and even Mario himself caught a swinging pendulum trap, blinding him in his left eye and causing the scar on his face.

At last, they found a wooden box within the well, from which a presence told Mario's men that their "pain was temporary" and to "ignore it." Mario's men were certain the presence would heal their wounds, but Mario thought that as the box had been hidden for so long, there had to be a reason why it was there, and that opening it would be unwise. Mario's men rebelled, eager to uncover the presence, and he was forced to strike them down. Mario was curious as to what the box might contain, but he promised himself not to open it. He carried it to the Villa Auditore, while not giving in to the Shroud's attempts to heal him. He had his brother pick it up, making it "the Brotherhood's problem."

Family reunion
In 1476, Giovanni and two of his sons, Federico and Petruccio, were executed under the pretext of treason, while in truth being executed by the Templars, the arch-enemies of the Assassins. In order to get to safety, Giovanni's remaining son Ezio escorted his mother Maria and sister Claudia out of Florence and towards Monteriggioni.

When the three almost reached Monteriggioni, they were ambushed by Vieri de' Pazzi and his soldiers. Mario and his mercenaries saved the trio and he insisted that they accompanied him back to Monteriggioni. Mario told Ezio of his Assassin heritage and that he had to be trained so that he could properly fight and defeat the Templars and protect his mother and sister. He then showed Ezio around his villa. He soon started Ezio's training to become an Assassin, teaching him disarming and countering skills, as well as taunts. In 1478, Ezio announced his decision to take Maria and Claudia to Spain, against Mario's wishes. Due to his pride in his Assassin heritage, he stormed off, and left for San Gimignano before Ezio could rethink his decision.

Feeling guilty, Ezio followed Mario to San Gimignano to kill Vieri de' Pazzi. When Ezio killed Vieri and began to abuse the body, Mario stepped in and urged him to have respect for the dead. Then, addressing Vieri's body, he delivered a short monologue.

When they returned to Monteriggioni, Mario's men celebrated the victory, and Mario himself showed Ezio the Sanctuary, down a staircase hidden behind a bookcase in his study, and also explained the importance of the Codex, a few pages of which he and Giovanni had collected and translated, before placing on the Codex Wall.

Acquisition of the Apple
In 1488, Mario and some of the other leading Assassins met in Venice, planning to acquire the "Apple" from the Grand Master of the Templar Order, Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, knowing that it was to be delivered to him that day. When they found Rodrigo, they saw they had been beaten to him by Ezio, who was locked in combat with Rodrigo and was joined by the Assassins. After defeating Rodrigo's guards and almost killing Rodrigo, the Templar leader ran for his life and left the Apple behind. Mario revealed the group as Assassins, to a surprised Ezio. On the same night, the group met atop a tower in the city, where Ezio was inaugurated into the Assassin Order, and took a leap of faith.

After securing the Piece of Eden, Mario studied it alongside Niccolò Machiavelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Ezio. When the Apple was activated, Mario and Machiavelli were both affected and collapsed, holding their heads. Ezio and Leonardo, however, remained unaffected. Mario recognized its great power and told Ezio to protect it by taking it to the Rocca di Ravaldino in Forlì, as that citadel was protected by their ally Caterina Sforza. Mario also invited Leonardo to the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni.

After seeing Ezio place his fiftieth feather in Maria's feather chest, Mario entered and attempted to discourage Ezio from continuing on what Mario considered to be a vain effort and left after informing him that he had left a new weapon at the blacksmith for Ezio to use.

In December 1499, Mario, Ezio and the other Assassins who Ezio previously met gathered in the Villa Auditore to find out the prophecy in the Codex. They discovered that the Codex pages showed a world map with locations of the Vaults. Ezio concluded that the nearest vault was in the Vatican and that Rodrigo Borgia had became Pope so that he could have easy access to the Vault and the Staff of Eden, which was in fact the papal staff. Ezio left for Rome to assassinate Rodrigo and enter the Vault, while Mario and his fellow Assassins caused trouble around the city to distract the Papal army's attention. Ezio spared Rodrigo, but recovered the Staff of Eden from him and discovered and entered the Vault, and after communicating with Minerva, one of Those Who Came Before, he left.

Siege of Monteriggioni
After Ezio did this, he met with Mario and the two fought their way back through the Vatican, and reached Tiber river where Mario encouraged Ezio to drop the Apple in, but Ezio could not do it, so Mario decided he would take care of it until Ezio made his decision. After the pair escaped from Rome they returned to Monteriggioni.

They made it back to the town by the afternoon of New Year's Day 1500, and Mario told Ezio that he had had new cannons installed into the walls, and that his mercenaries were still trying to get the hang of them. Mario and Ezio rode into the town, and were cheered by the townspeople for their victory in the Vatican. Mario returned to the Villa, while Ezio began to enjoy the new abundance of time he had.

At dawn, on January 2, Claudia's birthday, Monteriggioni was besieged by the Borgia, under the command of Cesare Borgia. Mario quickly met Ezio, saying that he would keep the Apple safe with him and that Ezio had to stop the enemy's cannons, whilst he lead a frontal assault on the Borgia. However, during the battle, Mario became wounded and was captured by Cesare. Mario, who attempted to flee back to the city, collapsed at the city gate, followed by Cesare Borgia and his three lieutenants. Cesare, holding the Apple in his hand, shot Mario in the head as he lay beneath him, killing Mario, as an 'invitation' from Cesare's family to Ezio's to go to Rome. After Mario died, the city was destroyed, the Villa Auditore was desecrated, and the Assassin Order was forced to relocate to Rome, under the acting leadership of Niccolò Machiavelli.

Personality and characteristics
Mario dressed in the flamboyant style of the Italian nobility of the Renaissance, sported long, dark hair that he slicked back neatly and had a scar over his left eye, which he was also blind in. This is an injury he sustained when he was exploring underneath the Villa Auditore, and found the Shroud. He was a boisterous man and made no apologies for his passion for fighting and alcohol. He cared deeply for his family and was extremely proud of his Assassin heritage. From his letter to Giovanni and their differences in fighting styles, it can be assumed that he was often playfully critical of his brother, much like his nephew Federico was with Ezio.

The logo of the Assassins was embroidered/stitched onto the leather of Mario's left shoulder pad. The Auditore coat of arms was also stitched onto the cape he wore.

Upon close inspection, one notes that Mario often put his hand on the shoulder of the person he was speaking to, presumably as a sign of closeness or affection.

Trivia
*When he first introduced himself, he exclaimed to Ezio that "It's a-me, Mario!". This was intended as a reference to Mario, who often says the same line, from the Super Mario Bros. game series.
*Mario often refers to Ezio as nipote ("nephew" in Italian)
*He was often referred to as ubriacone ("drunkard" in Italian) by the Pazzi.
*Although Mario lived in the villa, you only get to see him during his scripted missions or when you place your 50th feather in Maria's box.
*During Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Mario had greying hair, indicating he has aged significantly.
*In the novel of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, after the defense of Monteriggioni, Mario's head was cut off after he head been shot and shown to Ezio by Cesare Borgia during Ezio's escape from the tunnels underneath the Villa.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, during Sequence One, you can harm or kill Mario without any penalty.
*During his stay at the Villa, one of the relics Desmond can find in the town is Mario's longsword embedded in a stone. This is possibly a reference to the Arthurian legend; the sword in the stone.
Francesco de' Pazzi (1444 – 1478) was the father of Vieri de' Pazzi and one of the Pazzi conspirators. He was the third assassination target of Ezio and he was secretly a Templar. Also, he was one of Florence's wealthiest nobles and he hated the Medici family and the rising middle class with a passion.

Assassin's Creed II
He was first witnessed by Ezio, in the ripe of a discussion with Rodrigo Borgia, along with his son and his uncle, Jacopo de' Pazzi, in San Gimignano about the murder of the Medici brothers. He was seen again later in a chamber underneath the Santa Maria Novella in Florence, discussing with his uncle and the Pazzi Conspirators about the assassination of Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici. He was very confident that their mission would be a success, he showed this by spitting out constant insults and mockery at the enemy, but Jacopo warned him that confidence led to the death of his son, who was murdered by Ezio. During the High Mass at the Duomo, he violently stabbed Giuliano 19 times in the chest in a bloody frenzy. He then tried to kill Lorenzo, but Ezio fought him off, which forced him to flee. He and Jacopo's soldiers later attacked Florence starting a civil war to gain influence and control. Days after, he is seen trying to invade the Palazzo della Signoria to 'persuade' the officials to make the Pazzi the leaders of Florence when Ezio appeared again. Ezio managed to fight off Francesco's guards, then forced the paranoid Francesco to flee. After being chased by Ezio, he was assassinated. Jacopo was soon seen claiming victory for the Pazzi after their taking of Florence, a large crowd of Florentine citizens watched on, though this does not last as he notices Francesco's body hung from the tower of the Palazzo della Signoria, which forced Jacopo to flee and end the violence in Florence.
Final Words
Ezio: Now Firenze will judge you for what you've done.

Francesco: It's over... It's all over...

Ezio: Meglio essere felici in questa vita che aspirare a esserlo nella prossima. (Better to be content in this life, than aspire to it in the next) Requiescat in Pace. (Rest in peace)

Trivia
*Francesco is Ezio's first assassination target where he says Requiescat in Pace (Rest in Peace) after he assassinates him.
*It is peculiar that Vieri is Francesco's son, as the latter had to have been 10 when Vieri was born.
*Francesco de' Pazzi had a daughter as well. Hinted in the game's start, "Boys will be boys", Ezio comments "Your sister seemed quite satisfied with the handling I gave her earlier" to Vieri de' Pazzi just before their fight. Following this, in Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, Ezio specifically stated her name as Viola.
*In real life, Francesco de' Pazzi was reputed to have stabbed himself in the thigh accidentally, while killing Giuliano de' Medici in a frenzy. He was dragged from the Palazzo Pazzi and then hanged naked from the tower of the Palazzo della Signoria on April 26, 1478. His body was then cut down and desecrated.
*When being pursued by Ezio, Francesco de' Pazzi leaps off the Palazzo della Signoria into a haystack for a quick escape. This was the only known example for a non-Assassin committing a form of a Leap of Faith, until it was shown that in the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer modes, the playable Templar characters can also perform a Leap of Faith.
*The way that Francesco executes a leap of faith is not the usual eagle dive regularly performed by Ezio.
Civilians are the common people in the Assassin's Creed series, found abundantly throughout the game worlds.

Assassin's Creed
Peasants are the general denizens of the cities (and the Kingdom) of the Holy Land in Assassin's Creed. Generally, they will do nothing to hurt Altaïr although there does exist some special variants of peasants that might.

Peasants are programmed to react realistically to Altaïr's actions: watching closely when he enters a fight, making comments as he free runs throughout the city, gasping when he buries any of his blades into an enemy and fleeing when the enemy dies. Peasants can also act as both a shield and a hindrance for Altaïr as he flees. If he runs into enough of them while sprinting, he will lose his balance and fall to the ground, greatly offending those he ran into. However, if he is shoving his way through a crowd, he may keep up his momentum.

If Altaïr murders a peasant, he suffers a large desynchronization due to his disregard for the first tenet of the Creed, but when you have completed the game, he will no longer desynchronize for killing them.

Civilian Types
Some civilians are different from the rest. Some may assist, be a hindrance, or an outright danger.

Beggars
Found in: Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

In the three cities of Assassin's Creed, a desperate female beggar may pester Altaïr for money, claiming her family is "sick and dying" and "have nothing". They will harass Altaïr for several seconds, before giving up. If you attempt to climb a building to escape them, they will throw a rock at you. If you climb up a ladder however, they will simply walk away without throwing rocks. If you draw any of your weapons, they will run away screaming. In addition, you may throw them in another direction to frighten them. Doing so enough, will get you an Achievement. Another method is to simply punch them once, and send them running. Doing this is much the same as throwing them, but will not (usually) cause the guards to intervene. There is also no Achievement for this method. There are also physical disabled civilians in small corners of the three cities that will push you if you walk too close to them, and are an easy way for you to break your cover from the guards.

Either way, you'll take a very minor hit of desyncronization, but considering the annoyance beggars cause, it might be worth it. Frightening them will cause them to be scared of you for quite some time.

In Assassin's Creed II, beggars will appear in some cities, but will not chase or harass Ezio for money, only leaning against a wall or standing up when Ezio is near them. If you throw money at them, they will pick it all up, thank you, and then walk away. They instead reappear in function as minstrels, who act similarly to the beggars in the first game, except that they do not demand money, but instead run in front of Ezio singing and playing chords on their instruments.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood features the calmer beggars of Assassin's Creed II, as well as the return of the harassing beggars from the original game. Both versions of beggars can be gotten rid of by throwing money at them. This time around, the harassing beggars are usually found in groups of three, all of which are women.

Carriers
Found in: Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood

In the three cities of Assassin's Creed, some peasants may be found walking around carrying something heavy. If you bump into them, they will drop the item and cause a big commotion. To pass by carriers without causing a commotion, they should be gently pushed aside while in Low Profile. The carriers come in two varieties: jar carriers and box carriers. Jar carriers are women carrying around a large jar on their head and box carriers are men holding a box close to their chest. If you are to knock any of these things down, nearby guards will give you a warning, and if you repeat it, they will attack.

In Assassin's Creed II, only box carriers appear. They are seen carrying boxes from shop to shop. If you bump into one, they will cause a great deal of commotion, and guards will often come and push you around. Ezio becomes one in the penultimate memory block (not including the DLCs), when he is carrying a box. He cannot use the "gentle push", and knocking over another carrier will cause nearby guards to push Ezio, making him drop the box.

It is quite possible for a box-carrier to walk into the back of Ezio who is walking. This results in them dropping the box but still blaming Ezio. Also galloping near one causes him to drop his box, even if his definition of "near" seems to span a circular area with 20 meter diameter around him.

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, box carriers once again are the only type of carrier in the game.

Citizens in distress (Save Citizen)
Found in: Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

In Assassin's Creed, occasionally, Altaïr can find citizens that need saving within the three cities. They are often being harassed by guards for crimes they did not commit. Altaïr can kill the guards, and in doing so, unlock a group of either Scholars or Vigilantes. Women that are saved unlock a group of Vigilantes, and if you rescue a man, they will unlock a group of Scholars.

In Bloodlines, Citizens are the similar to their original counterparts, but will reward Altaïr with coins instead of unlocking a specific group.

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, citizens that are being harassed by Borgia guards can be saved by Ezio. Once saved, they will give their lives to join Ezio's cause and become an Assassin apprentice.

Scholars
Scholars

Found in: Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines

Scholars are holy men who walk slowly and silently through the three cities. Having robes similar enough to a Scholar's, Altaïr can blend in with a group of them to escape guards.

In Bloodlines, Scholars do not come in groups and appear even when you have not saved any citizen. Altaïr cannot blend with them.

In Assassin's Creed II, instead of Scholars, there are Monks. Their importance is severely diminished as Ezio can blend in with any crowd, and that they aren't very good pickpocketing targets. Instead, their closest counterpart functionally would be Courtesans, which have the added advantage of moving with Ezio instead of the other way around.

clear
Thugs
Thugs

Found in: Assassin's Creed

Thugs or Courageous Citizens are burly denizens of the three cities. They are the only peasants that will fight you, but only in a fistfight; drawing a weapon will cause them to flee. You can pickpocket Thugs for 5 throwing knives, or defeat them in a fistfight for one. Draw a weapon and kill them, however, and you will get zero knives, as well as desynchronization. Strategy-wise it is better to flee should you start a fistfight with them, as the reward for beating them is hardly worth the effort, as opposed to running away and trying again somewhere else. Thugs will not follow you to the roofs should you choose to escape.

Thugs appear in Masyaf as well, but they have a much different appearance than the other 3 cities. In Masyaf they are far less burly, and take the appearance of Assassin Informants but with darker robes. They act in the exact same way though.

While they do not appear in Assassin's Creed II or Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it is worth noting that some civilians will fight you if you are caught pickpocketing. Unlike in Assassin's Creed, however, fist fighting civilians are very easy to defeat. In addition to the fact that Ezio is more proficient in unarmed combat than Altaïr is, fistfighting civilians will back down and flee after the first hit, even if they block it. It should also be noted that in both the Beat Up and Mail Delivery missions in Forlì, gangs of Civilians will engage Ezio in much the same way as the Thugs do in Assassins Creed, and unlike the aforementioned civilians, they will require a lot more hits to defeat.

Trouble Makers
Found in: Assassin's Creed

In the three cities, one may find madmen and drunkards. They usually are found babbling, walking through back alleys, and struggling with chronic flatulence. If you get close, they will shove you violently and generally cause a great disturbance. Because Trouble Makers create a commotion when they push you, it can cause you to become Exposed. This can sometimes cause you to fail a side mission, or break your cover as you attempt an assassination. They can also push you into water, instantly killing you.

Just like with beggars, it's suggested that you punch or shove them when you see them, as this will, oddly enough, not arouse suspicion with the guards and is a surefire way to get them off your back. You'll take a hit of synchronization (one unit's worth) but this is a small price to pay to deal with them. However, make sure that there are no Thugs nearby as this will start a fistfight with them.

In Assassin's Creed II, drunkards resemble the ones in the original game in terms of appearance, however, they do not act aggressively.

Vigilantes
Vigilantes
Found in: Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

In Assassin's Creed, Vigilantes are groups of brave, tough men unlocked after saving female citizens. If Altaïr runs past a group of Vigilantes while being chased by guards, the Vigilantes will grab the guards, delaying them greatly. Altaïr can then escape, or take the opportunity to assassinate the guards as they are held back. They are particularly helpful in assassination missions for targets who flee, such as Abu'l Nuqoud.

In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the vigilantes make a return, acting exactly like vigilantes from Assassin's Creed.

Minstrels
Found in: Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood

In any of the cities in Assassin's Creed II, as well as Rome in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, minstrels will follow Ezio on the streets, playing a song on their lute and singing about Ezio. For better or for worse, they are the beggars of Assassin's Creed II. However, they are slightly less annoying than their Assassin's Creed counterparts. For starters, they are not as desperate or whiny as the beggars of Assassin's Creed, nor will they throw rocks at him if he tries to escape. Secondly, there is a much easier and socially acceptable method to get rid of them than in the previous game: appeasing them by throwing money at them. Just like in the previous game, you can punch them or throw them to cause them to run. Unlike in the previous game, doing these sort of rash actions against them (drawing weapons, punching, etc.) does actually carry a real consequence, as it will cause a 25% increase in Notoriety.

Another method for dealing with them is to knock them over when holding the high profile button, immediately stopping them from singing and blocking your way. Although if done near guards, this may cause a slight amount of Notoriety.

Stealing from a minstrel causes him to drop his instrument.

They are also in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but they wear different colored clothes, but they will still sing the same songs as in Assassin's Creed II.

Pickpockets
:Main article: Pickpockets

Found in: Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Pickpockets, as the name suggests, are thieves that will attempt to steal the player's money. If the pickpocket is successful in stealing the money, or if Ezio is in the pickpocket's sight, he will away by use of free-running. Should the player be pickpocketed, the stolen money can be regained by chasing, and tackling the pickpocket. In addition to the player's money, an extra 500 florins can be gained by tackling. Also in Brotherhood, pickpockets carry one trade item that can be used for the Shop Quests. The extra money can be gained even if the player didn't have any money stolen. Pickpockets are identified with a money pouch icon on the mini-map, as well as a silver arrow which appears above them. Pickpockets are also subject to the same laws as Ezio. If one is on the rooftops, he may be shot at by an Archer, or Arquebusier. If one is killed, the dead body can be looted. Killing one has not penalties for desynchronization, but can cause an increase in notoriety.

Borgia Messengers
Borgia Messengers

Found in: Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Borgia Messengers behave almost exactly like pickpockets, but with some minor differences. Firstly, they won't attempt to steal from the player. Second they don't have any icon on the radar, and the only way to identify them is by a silver chevron which appears above their head. Thirdly, you can steal a sum of 1503 to 1505 florins from them. And lastly, killing one will result in a 50% notoriety increase in AC II, or a 100% increase in Brotherhood. If a Borgia messenger is located on the rooftops by guards, he will be attacked. Same as with pickpockets, the dead bodies can be looted.

Courtesans
Courtesans
Found in: Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Courtesans are very good at distracting guards, also they can get into places covered with guards, although guards will steal 2 courtesans from you when they walk past them, a new upgrade of the courtesans in Brotherhood is that they can poison guards, hire courtesans, then walk past guards and get them to steal 2, then the courtesan will stand in front of the guard and blow a powder (the Poison) into the guards face. Then they will walk away, the guard will then do the same as any other guard that gets poisoned by Ezio with the poison blade.

Also when you enter a fight with guards while with courtesans, they (in Brotherhood) will flee instead of fight.

Mercenaries
Mercenaries
Found in: Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Mercenaries are very skilled fighters. You can use them to attack and kill guards; the only down side of Mercenaries is that they can't scale rooftops with Ezio unless there is a ladder to climb. Mercenaries always carry heavy weapons, i.e Axes or Claymores, meaning they can't sprint. Also, in Brotherhood they are useful for getting rid of Minstrels, as when they sing to you, a Mercenary will run over and push him away and chase him around the city telling him to keep away from Ezio. This, however, doesn't last as the next time the Minstrel appears he will continue to sing to Ezio.

Thieves
Thieves
Found in: Assassin's Creed II, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Thieves are a good way to lure away guards from targets to assassinate, or good ways to be rid of Guard Posts, Lock onto a Guard and press the Y Button (Xbox 360) or Triangle (PlayStation 3). In Brotherhood, Thieves are extra handy for receiving Florins without arousing Notoriety or a Fight as they will pickpocket any civilians they pass and you will receive the cash, although Thieves can Free - Run with Ezio, they are not good in a full group as if they are on a small platform or rooftop they are most likely going to fall, either from lack of space, from an archer, crossbow men or rifle men shooting at them, other thieves gentle pushing them causing to fall or losing grip while holding onto the edge of a roof.

Potential Assassin Apprentices
Apprentices

Found in: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Potential Assassin Apprentices were civilians under the influence of the Borgia, who were often bullied and beaten up by the guards for fun. When saved by Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the civilians seek to eliminate the Borgia influence in Rome and join the Assassin Order as Ezio's personal team of Assassins.

Trivia
*Assassin's Creed contains files titled "SnakeCharmer", but no snake charmer exists in the game. This hints that Ubisoft may have originally intended the game to feature snake charmers.
*The NPCs of the civilians in Damascus, Jerusalem, and Masyaf are similar.
*When using eagle vision in Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood, civilians are the only ones that don't glow any color. They are simply grey, because they are not an ally or an enemy.
*In Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood, the player can distinguish between different civilian attributes and types. For instance, a rich civilian will wear more lively and colorful clothes, capes and shoes, all of a very fancy nature. A richer civilian can be pickpocketed for more Florins.
*People celebrating Carnivale are rich civilians, especially the ones that dance.
*In Assassins Creed II the minstrel's florin pouch only contains 10 florins at most but in Assassins Creed: Brotherhood minstrel's doesn't have any florins
*Interestingly enough, you see no children walking in the streets, not even with an adult. The only children found are Ezio's younger brother, Petruccio, Caterina Sforza's children Bianca and Ottaviano and the lost child in Brotherhood whose mother was captured by Silvestro Sabbatini. Also a child appears when Ezio and Mario are trotting down the streets in Monteriggioni.
*In Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood, women will often find anything Ezio does to be attractive, commenting how strong, fast, or brave he is throughout the game.
*Ezio can kill civilians without desynchronizing by using a gentle push or by punching them into water. However, throwing them in to water will cause desynchronization.
*You can also 'kill' civilians without desynchronization by knocking them out first and then dragging their subdued body off a ledge higher than a single story. This will stop them from writhing about on the ground and turn them into a motionless corpse. This, in fact, works with any subdued person. If the civilian is picked up and thrown a second time, he will resume his writhing.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, as Ezio rebuilds Rome, civilians will start carrying parasols, sceptres and fans.
*In Assassin's Creed II, guards will not attack Ezio if he kills a civilian, however, they do in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the male potential Assassin Recruits always have the same clothes as Duccio de Luca, Claudia Auditore's former love interest in Assassin's Creed II.

The Pistol, which is also referred to as the Hidden Gun, is one of the expansions of the hidden blade
invented by Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad using the Apple of Eden. After discovering the design for it on one of the Codex pages, Leonardo da Vinci managed to craft one for the use of Ezio Auditore.

Description
The pistol consists of a small firearm with a very short barrel that, if aimed properly, can kill a target from a distance. Though an excellent weapon for assassination from afar, it will give away its user's position immediately after firing, due to its loud discharge.

Up to 6 bullets may be held at a time, and can be purchased from any blacksmith. However, they are quite expensive, as one bullet costs 175 florins (149 florins with full discount in Monteriggioni), which is three and a half times the cost of a throwing knife. Alternatively, bullets may also be obtained by looting dead guards.

Combat
The pistol takes about a second and a half to completely aim, though it can be fired before it is fully aimed. Firing immediately without aiming is not advised, as even at close range, it is highly unlikely to result in a hit.

Aiming the pistol within guards' lines of sight will automatically make them suspicious. When in combat against a small number of guards, aiming it for several seconds will also cause the group to lose morale and eventually flee, though this tactic cannot be used for Brutes.

Though not recommended, it is also possible to quickly switch to the pistol during a battle, and take a random shot from as close as possible to an enemy, before resuming the fight. Despite its low success rate, this method can potentially pick off immobile opponents, or quickly eliminate enemies without the need for counter-kills.

Advancements
In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the aiming method of the pistol has been modified, and no longer seems to require a trigger pull to be fired (an invisible mechanism similar to the hidden blade's). Though perfect aim is achieved much more quickly and the sound is much louder than in Assassins Creed 2, the bullet can only be fired after the shot is fully charged.

Ezio also gains the ability to dual-wield the pistol alongside a medium, primary weapon, like swords and warhammers. This maps the Pistol to the sword on the weapon wheel, allowing the player to instantly aim and fire the gun anytime without selecting it specifically (so long as the sword in equipped, sheathed or not). It also allows him to easily switch between short and long ranged combat seamlessly in battle, using the pistol with his left and a sword with his right. He may also use the pistol for counters and point-blank kills at anytime during close combat, for example, Ezio can sword-counter an attacking enemy, then instantly fire the pistol on a another to kill two guards at once.

After reuniting with Leonardo da Vinci in Rome, Ezio is able to purchase an upgrade to his pistol that allows him to fire small Poison Darts from it, in addition to bullets. These darts are usable when the poison blade is equipped, and share its effects, allowing him to quietly and cleanly kill targets at a safe distance.

Codex Description
"Success! We have found a way to alter the structure of the hidden blade so that it can be used to launch small projectiles. It is capable of grievous damage – even from great distance. I confess, the means by which I came about the discovery was... risky to say the least. But I have found that in small doses, and with a focused mind, the Apple can be used without ill effect. Or so I hope.

"The knowledge of projectile combat is not new to us, having been observed amongst our Eastern neighbors. But their weapons were much larger – and insufficient for our needs. I have now found a way to miniaturize their designs, embedding their fiery weapon into a form that can be worn on the wrist.

"We have also refined the formula for combustible powder, such that common ingredients might be used. This is a dangerous bit of knowledge and it is best shared with only our closest allies..." -Altaïr in Codex Page 28.

Trivia
Assassin's Creed II
*Often when the pistol is fired, a dog can be heard barking. Though not a surprise as dogs tend to bark at loud noises, no dogs are seen or mentioned in the game.
*Both the pistol and throwing knives are disabled in the Secret Locations that require the player to chase an Agile.
*Ammunition can be found as an item when looting the bodies of any deceased guards, whether or not they are arquebusiers.
*The pistol does not kill in a single shot during the battles with either Dante Moro and or Rodrigo Borgia, though it is just as effective as usual when the player is required to assassinate them.
*Due to its interconnectivity with Assassin's Creed II, it is possible to obtain a variant of the pistol that fires throwing knives instead of bullets in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
*The pistol is also a multiplayer ability for multiplayer characters; though it is unknown if they actually possessed the weapon, or if Abstergo simply added the ability in the Animus.
*Four additional bullet slots for a total of ten slots can be purchased for 30 Units on Uplay.
*For reasons unknown, counter-attacks and executions do not use up bullet ammunition. Although this may be due to the fact that the use of the pistol is automatic in the counter attacks and thus it would be harsh for it to use ammunition as the play has no control over it.
*During a kill-streak, the player can hold down the attack button while targeting an opponent, causing Ezio to perform an automatic double kill with his sword and pistol, using up ammunition in the process.
*The sound of the pistol more closely resembles that of a musket, rather than the cannon-like sound in Assassin's Creed II.
*The Assassin Apprentices' pistols (obtained by rank 5) use the same firing sound as heard in Assassin's Creed II.
*Strangely, the apprentices' pistols are much weaker than Ezio's, taking up to three shots to kill a guard; though this may be attributed to Ezio being more skilled in aiming the pistol at vital body parts.
}}Emilio Barbarigo (1421 - September 11, 1485) was a corrupt Venetian merchant and tyrant of Venice, and secretly a member of the Knights Templar. Nevertheless, he was an extremely wealthy, noble merchant, whose sole desire was to take over Venice. He lobbied the government and edged out the competition to gain power in the Venetian market.
Assassin's Creed II
In Venice, Emilio had taken control of the city's merchant district and was ruling it with an iron fist. Emilio provided weapons to the other Templars in Florence and he apparently single-handedly funded the city guard. He lived in a large palazzo, the Palazzo della Seta, surrounded by many guards. He commissioned the city's guard members to the markets, his palazzo, and other places he retained control.

Emilio attended a meeting in 1480 at an outdoor Roman theatre in Tuscany, with various other Templars, including Jacopo de' Pazzi and the Templar Grand Master, Rodrigo Borgia. During this meeting, he (as well as Borgia) stabbed Jacopo for his failures in their cause, almost killing him. In 1485 in his palazzo, Emilio met with Carlo Grimaldi, a member of the Council of Ten, who informed him that the Assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, had arrived in Venice. Emilio was assassinated by Ezio shortly after Carlo left.

He is related to Marco Barbarigo, Silvio Barbarigo and Agostino Barbarigo. It is unknown how they are related but he is probably a cousin or a brother, considering they are around the same age group. He was killed on September 11th, because of the fact that the day Doge Mocenigo died was September 14, and Carlo mentioned in their conversion, that they were going to have a meeting in three days, which was also the day that Mocenigo died.

Carlo Grimaldi (1445 - September 14th, 1485) was a Templar and a government official. He was close to Doge Giovanni Mocenigo of Venice, though he plotted to kill him. He was also a member of the Council of Ten.

Carlo craved political power, and knew the Doge of Venice very well. Emerging from his palace in Monaco, he used this to his advantage after he had heard that the daughter of a member of the Council of Ten was in love with a servant (though her father, Ignazio Contarini, would not allow it). Carlo advised the couple to escape on a boat that very night. However, when they arrived at the boat, they found Carlo waiting for them with a few guards and Ignazio himself. The servant was killed, and the Doge trusted Carlo enough to allow him into the Council of Ten.

Carlo is first seen meeting with Emilio Barbarigo in the Palazzo della Seta, informing him of Ezio Auditore's arrival in Venice. He also tells Emilio of a Templar meeting to be held later in Campo San Stefano. He leaves just before Emilio is assassinated. He is next seen in Venice, meeting with Marco Barbarigo, Dante Moro, Silvio Barbarigo, and Rodrigo Borgia as they plot to poison the Doge in order for Marco to replace him. He does not seem to trust or like Silvio very much.

Carlo is later encountered in the Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace), prior to Ezio Auditore's arrival via Leonardo da Vinci's Flying Machine, where he is playing chess with Doge Mocenigo. Ezio rushes in, only to realize that it was too late, for the Doge had already been poisoned. Carlo runs out of the room, yelling to the guards that Ezio had killed the Doge. Ezio pursues him and assassinates him in the courtyard.
*The fictional character Carlo comes from the real House of Grimaldi that still rules over Monaco today.
*Carlo's death was featured in the E3 demo, but greatly differed from the one in the released game. Carlo's assassination was during Carnevale, in place of Marco Barbarigo's. The death of the Doge of Venice was also excluded, and an extra scene with Carlo and a guard was added; the guard running to Carlo, screaming about Ezio's Flying Machine, with Carlo replying, "Coward! The Devil is not the one you need to fear. Tell him hello for me!" He then stabbed the guard in the chest, continuing "I know you're here, Assassin! Show yourself, or are you afraid?"
**According to the Animus database's filter, Carlo is not a Templar (despite plotting with them). However, when viewing the portraits of Ezio's victims in his room of the Villa Auditore, Carlo's portrait says that he is a Templar.
**At the time of his death, Carlo would have been around 40 years old (the same age as Ezio during the end of the game), yet he appears to be much older, with features such as gray hair/beard, whereas Ezio only grew facial hair at 40. His birthday may be a possible error in the Database.
**Before assassinating Emilio Barbarigo, if you use Eagle Vision on Carlo, he will be shown in red although you have not yet learned that he is a Templar.
**When you go to assassinate Emilio Barbarigo, it is possible for you to assassinate him while he is still talking to Carlo. If this happens, after the death scene Carlo will still be there for a second or two before disappearing.
Annetta (born 1457) was the Auditore family servant and the sister of Paola.
Biography
Annetta was the sister of Paola. They lost their parents at an early age when they were killed at sea. When Paola chose a life in prostitution, Annetta was allowed to become the live-in maid of the Auditore family in Florence, a family of Assassins, just like her parents.
In 1476, Giovanni, Federico and Petruccio Auditore were executed on the crimes of treason. Ezio Auditore, the remaining man of the family, asked Annetta to bring his mother and sister to a safe place, to which she suggested her sister's house. Micheletto Corella (1470 - 1506) was a condottiero, and a member of the Templar Order. He was also, at one point, the governor of Piombino.

Biography
Early life
Micheletto Corella was born in Valencia, Spain, but grew up in Rome, Italy. He was a childhood friend of Cesare Borgia, and would later become his protector as Micheletto was a year older than Cesare.

Serving the Borgia
Micheletto would go on to serve the Borgia for the rest of his life, Cesare particularly. He became Cesare's personal executioner, killing any who stood in Cesare's way. He also became a condottiero and the governor of Piombino for a short time.

Siege of Monteriggioni
In January 1500, Micheletto accompanied Cesare, along with Lucreiza Borgia, Juan Borgia, and Octavian de Valois to lay siege to Monteriggioni in order to bring down the Auditore and acquire the Apple of Eden. They went home victorious with the Apple and Mario Auditore's life taken.

Murders
Many of Micheletto's murders went unrecorded, though a few managed to be kept known throughout the years. The Church aided Micheletto by helping to cover up his killings or to ignore them.

On 18 August 1500, Alfonso of Aragon, the husband of Cesare's sister, Lucrezia Borgia, was killed by Micheletto on Cesare's orders, as the latter was jealous of Alfonso.

In 1502, Micheletto killed Giulio Cesare da Varano and three of his sons in order for Cesare to be able to take over Camerino.

Micheletto killed Astorre III Manfredi, the Lord of Faenza, on 9 June 1502 inside the Castel Sant'Angelo.

On 31 December 1502, Micheletto simultaneously strangled Oliverotto da Fermo and Vitellozzo Vitelli for conspiring against Cesare.

On New Year's Eve of 1503, Cesare ordered the arrest of all his top captains that had once left his ranks and later rejoined; two of which were strangled back to back by Micheletto. The rest were thrown in prison.

Teaching Giovanni
At times between 1500 and 1503, Micheletto was left to guard and teach Giovanni Borgia, Cesare's adoptive son and Lucrezia's biological child. He attempted to instruct Giovanni to be tough and merciless, strangling an old man who was talking with Giovanni and beating him. Instead, Giovanni grew to hate Micheletto, which became one of the reasons for him to leave home.

Final tasks
In August 1503, not long after the death of Octavian de Valois, Micheletto accompanied Cesare to a meeting with Francesco Troche, who had told his brother Egidio of Cesare's plans for Romagna. Egidio had sent letters to the ambassador of Venice to warn him, though these letters were intercepted. Francesco attempted to have Cesare spare his life, but he was ultimately strangled to death by Micheletto, and his body was thrown in the Tiber River.

Micheletto then continued on to meet with some Borgia guards, giving them costumes with which they could infiltrate the Colosseum Passion Play to kill Pietro Rossi, Lucrezia's latest lover. Unbeknownst to him, he was being followed by the Assassin, Ezio Auditore, who had sent his apprentices to take down all the aforementioned guards, and steal the costumes they had been given.

Ezio continued to follow Micheletto to the Colosseum, where he took down all the Borgia arquebusiers posted there. Donning his own costume, Ezio followed Micheletto onstage, where they both joined the play. As soon as Ezio came close to Micheletto, he attacked him with his hidden blade. However, Ezio did not finish him off, saying that Micheletto would bring himself down by aiding Cesare.

Cesare later killed his father, Pope Alexander VI, after the latter attempted to poison Cesare. As a result, the Borgias' influence over Rome was gone and Cesare became powerless. Cesare sent Micheletto to gather an army to take back Rome, though he never arrived and instead, Cesare was captured by the Papal Guard. Micheletto fled Rome, though he was later captured on the order of Pope Julius II.

Final words
(As Ezio attempts to stab Micheletto, he laughs.)

Micheletto: You cannot save Pietro. The wine he drank was poisoned. As I promised Cesare, I made doubly sure. (Ezio gets up and leaves him.) I am not yet dead.

Ezio: I did not come here to kill you. He who is the cause of someone else becoming powerful is the agent of his own destruction.

Trivia
*In the the mobile phone version of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Micheletto was called Michelotto.
*Upon "assassinating" Micheletto, he is wearing his Passion play costume; however, when he is saying his "final words", he is wearing his ordinary clothes.
*During Micheletto's "final" words, Ezio will hold up his right Hidden Blade to Micheletto's throat, regardless of whether the player had purchased the second blade from Leonardo.
*In the novelization of Brotherhood, Micheletto helps Cesare escape. However, he later feels that he is being mistreated, and attempts to kill his master. He fails, however, and is instead shot in the face and maimed by Cesare's gun.
**In real life, Micheletto works later for Florence, and he was killed in Milan on January 1508.
*Ezio's last statement to Micheletto, "He who is the cause of someone else becoming powerful, is the agent of his own destruction", can be found in Chapter 3 of Machiavelli's The Prince, albeit in more detail.
Francesco Troche (1459 - 1503) was the Pope's chamberlain and a personal friend of Cesare Borgia. In 1503, Francesco told his older brother, Egidio Troche, about Cesare's intentions for Romagna. Subsequently, Egidio then sent a letter warning to the Venetian ambassador, warning him and hoping to prevent Cesare from conquering Romagna. However, one of his letters was intersepted by Cesare's men. When Cesare discovered this, he believed Francesco to be a traitor and had Micheletto Corella strangle him to death. His body was later dumped into the Tiber River.

Rosa (born 1460) was a member of the thieves faction led by Antonio in Assassin's Creed II. Ezio first encounters Rosa upon arriving in Venice, where she attempts to pickpocket him out of the money he was about to use to purchase a wooden model for Leonardo. Later, Ezio saves her after she was shot in the leg with an arrow while trying to climb the Palazzo della Seta, and was unable to run away from the guards. She eventually teaches Ezio the climb-leap ability.

Biography
Early life
Rosa was born in 1460. Nine months before, a Venetian nobleman paid a prostitute for her services and Rosa was the result of this event. The prostitute probably couldn't raise the child, so Rosa survived in the streets of Venice alone. At the age of fifteen, Rosa tried to steal from Antonio de Magianis, a stranger to her at this point, but was caught. Antonio, being the chief of the Venetian Thieves Guild, decided to keep Rosa as his pupil rather than sending her to the guards. Throughout her apprenticeship, Antonio noted many of her talents, especially her high level of agility. Antonio seemed to maintain a very parental relationship with Rosa as he would often call her sweetheart or little darling.

Assisting Ezio
By the year 1485, Emilio Barbarigo, in secret a member of the Templars, had complete control over Venice's merchant district. The Venetian thieves weren't satisfied with Emilio's rule and aspired to free the district's inhabitants. Rosa and a group of thieves attempted to infiltrate Emilio's Palazzo della Seta, but Rosa ended up getting shot in her leg by an archer. While trying to run back to the guild, she bumped into Ezio, whom she had previously robbed. He later helped her to fend off the attacking guards and also carried her to fellow thief Ugo, who put her in a boat. Ugo managed to get Rosa to the guild while Ezio took out the archers trying to kill them.

While recovering from her wounds, Rosa taught Ezio how to grab higher ledges. After Ezio's first successful climb-leap attempt, Rosa initiates a mission which challenged Ezio to climb the Santa Maria dei Frari within a time limit.

In a later mission, Rosa, along with several other of Antonio's thieves disguised themselves as archers Ezio had killed earlier. This was part of a larger plan which involved Ezio sneaking the the Palazzo della Seta to assassinate Emilio Barbarigo.

In 1488, on Ezio's birthday, Rosa gifted l'Arsenale's shipping manifest to Ezio. It detailed the return of a Templar boat the day after.

Madam of the Rosa in Fiore
In 1504, Claudia Auditore da Firenze, the madam of the Rosa in Fiore in Rome, stepped down after being assaulted by Borgia fanatics. Soon after, Antonio was contacted by his fellow Assassin La Volpe, who asked him if Rosa would like to replace Claudia as the brothel's madam. Rosa agreed and moved to Rome.

Characteristics and personality
Rosa, being the only female of the Venetian Thieves Guild, has a very aggressive, tough personality to match the male-dominated group, overall making her a tomboy. For example, a note from Antonio states that the thieves who tried to kiss Rosa were badly beaten up by her afterwards. She is not afraid to give orders or speak her mind to her fellow thieves (Ugo, for example, receives only insults from her, despite assisting in her rescue) as she will yell and insult them to their faces.

Rosa also appears to have one of the dirtiest mouths in the game after Caterina Sforza; this is shown after she gets shot in the leg, when she shouts "Bastardi!" left and right. Upon her initial run in with Ezio she claims she does not need assistance with her wound and Ezio is forced to follow and protect her until she eventually falls, at which point he carries her to safety. When carried to Antonio, she fiercely cursed him out while he was removing the arrow. After being rescued, Rosa’s personality and attitude toward Ezio changes drastically, becoming extremely flirtatious and more intimate, such as looking excited when Ezio stated he needed her, only to become disappointed when he wanted to learn her climbing technique. She seems to revert to her true self when around him instead of the tough thief image she maintains most of the time.

Relationship with Ezio
Like a lot of women in Assassin’s Creed II, Rosa becomes attracted to Ezio after their initial meeting, although she tried to pickpocket him by pretending to bump into him, causing Ezio to call her a jerk. However, unlike the majority of Ezio’s other love interests presented throughout the game, Ezio maintains a close, intimate friendship with Rosa and the two are often seen flirting whenever in each other's company, with an implied relationship during that period of their lives. Although, in the novel Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, Ezio and Rosa do have an intimate relationship together, constantly flirting and many cases of kissing.

Trivia
*She is one of the best free-runners in the Venetian Thieves Guild.
*In Eagle Vision, she will turn red for a split-second after you have assassinated Emilio Barbarigo.
*Rosa fights with a Sultan's Knife.
*It is also possible to assassinate Rosa. After the mission Everything Must Go, you might see her walking past Ezio in the guard armor she wore during the memory. Here, you can assassinate her, however it will not affect gameplay.
*The arrow that hit Rosa's leg disappears during gameplay but reappears after.
*Rosa is not seen as the Madame of the Rosa in Fiore in The Da Vinci Disappearance despite it taking place in 1506, and Claudia having stepped down in 1504.
