He was a doctor and a scribe, loyal to Lord Basilisk. His hospital was the second Templar base in Tyre, along with the Templar Stronghold. He was killed by Altaïr while interrogating a prisoner who possessed the second key to the Temple of the Sand.
*Roland Napule has a rather uncanny appearance and role to Garnier de Naplouse from the original Assassin's Creed. His presence in game (as well as the presence of Tamir), might indicate that Altaïr's Chronicles was originally supposed to follow the story line of the original game.
Manuel Palaiologos (1455 – 1512) was a Byzantine nobleman, born as an heir to the throne of the Byzantine Empire. In his youth, Manuel became associated with and joined the Templar Order, fueling his hopes of restoring his family's lost empire.

Posing as a wealthy Ottoman citizen, Manuel schemed the revival of the Empire and the retaking of Constantinople, which was at the time ruled by the Ottoman Empire. Together with Shahkulu, Manuel expanded his army of Byzantine Templars secretly hidden in Cappadocia to make his childhood hopes a reality under the Templar banner.

Biography
Early life
Manuel was born circa 1455, two years after the Fall of Constantinople, as an heir to the Byzantine throne. He lived with his family in Morea, but they fled in 1460 to Corfu. The family later traveled to Rome, where his father, Thomas Palaiologos, was recognized as the Byzantine Emperor.

During their time in Rome, Manuel and his brother Andreas fostered hopes of refounding the Byzantine Empire. Through Andreas, Manuel became acquainted with Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Templar Order, and Cem, brother to the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II. The brothers became members of the Templar Order, and with Rodrigo's support the two brothers schemed to conquer Constantinople restore the Byzantine Empire. While his brother preferred a more military approach to taking back the city, Manuel tended to go for quieter schemes.

Reviving the Byzantines
Manuel moved to Constantinople some time after 1485, where he traded his rights to the Byzantine throne with Sultan Bayezid II for a wealthy pension. He converted to Islam, and became the very model of an Ottoman citizen. By the 1490s, when Rodrigo Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, he lost interest in the Palaiologi's plans for Constantinople and the two brothers had to continue their plans without his support.

In 1509, after an earthquake struck Constantinople and the Ottoman Sultan fled, Manuel brought an army of Byzantine Templars into public light and a secret war erupted between the Byzantines and Ottomans throughout the country. Operating from the underground city of Derinkuyu in Cappadocia, Manuel kept his involvement a secret while the Ottoman Sultan continued to be unaware of the Byzantines' presence as he fought with his son Selim over the succession of the Ottoman throne.

Prince Ahmet, son of Sultan Bayezid II and his heir, developed an interest in the Templars' ideology and quickly joined their ranks, working his way up through the hierarchy. Younger and more charismatic than Manuel, Ahmet silently took his position as leader of the Byzantine Templars away from him.

Later life
Manuel was eventually assigned to the Templars' Masyaf expedition to retrieve the Masyaf Keys needed to open the underground library in Masyaf, built by the legendary Mentor of the Levantine Assassins Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. With the help of the journal "The Secret Crusade" by Niccolò Polo, the Templars were able to retrieve a Masyaf Key from underneath Topkapı Palace in Constantinople, which was brought into Manuel's possession.

In late 1511, Manuel made a deal with Tarik Barleti, captain of the Ottoman Janissaries, to buy Ottoman guns for his secret army in Cappadocia. Together with his fellow Templar, the Turkmen renegade Shahkulu, Manuel met with Tarik in Constantinople and checked on the weapons in the city's arsenal. They left the city again and set sail for Cappadocia, but were later followed there by the Italian Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze with help from fellow Assassin Piri Reis.

After Ezio's arrival in Derinkuyu, the Byzantine Templars hidden in the city quickly saw their ranks diminished and eventually Shahkulu was assassinated by the lone Assassin. After Ezio caused the Templars' munitions supplies to explode, Manuel came into the public to calm and rally the citizens. As soon as he caught sight of Ezio, Manuel fled deeper into the caverns.

He rapidly came to a halt at an underground river, where he was forced to turn around and confront Ezio. Without much effort, Ezio defeated Manuel and with his dying breath, Manuel gave Ezio his Masyaf Key and dared him to see if he could reach Altaïr's library alive.

Last words
Cesare Borgia (1475 or 1476 - 1507) was the son of Rodrigo Borgia and a nemesis of the Assassin Ezio Auditore. Like his father, he was a member of the Templar Order.
Even before his father's death, he claimed the rank of Grand Master of the Templar Order, usurping the title completely when his father eventually died.
Biography
Early life
Cesare Borgia was born in Rome in 1475, to Rodrigo Borgia, the Templar Grand Master of the time, and his long-term mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei.

At age 18, Cesare became a Cardinal, while his older brother, Juan (who was also Rodrigo's favorite) became Captain General. Unsatisfied with his life as a Cardinal and jealous of his brother's position and power, he arranged to meet Juan at Tiber Island, where he convinced Juan to spend the night with the courtesan Fiora Cavazza, who later killed him under Cesare's orders.

He then took his place as Captain General, thereby becoming one of the most powerful men in Italy. Once he had become Captain General of the Papal armies, Cesare surrounded himself with cruel and effective men; Ramiro d'Orco, Oliverotto da Fermo, and Vitellozzo Vitelli.

Becoming a Templar leader
In 1496, when his father waged war with the Orsini Family to seize their territory, Cesare joined the battle. Among the enemy's ranks was Bartolomeo d'Alviano, in secret an Assassin. When Bartolomeo's resources were down to three fortresses, Cesare cut off his supplies. Just when victory seemed within reach, Fabio Orsini arrived with his army and reinforced Bartolomeo, even wounding Cesare in the face.

In 1498, the Assassin Perotto Calderon and Cesare's sister Lucrezia had formed an intimate relationship, which led to Lucrezia becoming pregnant. However, Cesare had Perotto imprisoned for becoming close to his sister, and took the child away from them. Perotto managed to escape and took his son with him, but as he fled, the members of his Brotherhood executed him for having broken the tenets of their Creed. Cesare somehow managed to once again take the child, and decided to raise him as his own, naming the child Giovanni Borgia.

Siege of Monteriggioni
In January 1500, Cesare led an assault on Monteriggioni, the headquarters of the Assassins in Italy, in order to eliminate the Auditore family, who were the leaders of the Assassins. Besieging the city, Cesare's forces overwhelmed the fortress defenders and captured the Apple, Caterina Sforza, and Mario Auditore, the current leader of the Italian Assassins.

The beaten Assassin walked through the gates of Monteriggioni before collapsing onto the ground, followed by Cesare and his allies; including his sister, Lucrezia, Micheletto Corella, Baron Octavian de Valois, and Juan Borgia.

Cesare sheathed his sword and spoke out to Ezio himself, who had seen the Borgia's entrance and was running across the rooftops to aid Mario. The Borgia Captain General spoke of how the Pope had told him of the Assassins and Apple. He then turned and grabbed the Baron de Valois' firearm from him, a pistol that Ezio's good friend, Leonardo da Vinci, had been forced to fashion for them. Cesare stated that there had been too much bloodshed on both sides, and that a "cleansing was in order." Raising the pistol into the air, Cesare "invited" Ezio to come and face him in Rome, and killed Mario with a shot from the firearm.

Ezio was then shot down and wounded by a team of arquebusiers. Cesare immediately had Mario decapitated, his severed head placed on a pike. During Ezio's escape, Cesare showed Mario's head to him, exclaiming that he would kill him next. With the battle was won. With Monteriggioni in ruins, Cesare and his army returned to Rome with their prize.

Supressing rebellion
Following the Siege of Monteriggioni, Cesare commanded Ramiro d'Orco, Vitellozzo Vitelli and Oliverotto da Fermo to lead his armies into Romagna and claim it for their Borgia master. However, all three generals eventually rebelled against Cesare, to which he responded by butchering Ramiro.

His death panicked both Oliverotto and Vitellozzo, forcing them both to re-enter Cesare's service, after he accepted their every demand to return without consequences for the rebellion. However, with Romagna his, Cesare no longer required their service. Months later, Cesare threw a "dinner" in Vitellozzo and Oliverotto's honour. Once both generals arrived at the location Cesare given, he spoke out to them, thanking them for handing Romagna to him, but claimed it was time to shed his "bloody gloves".

As several Papal Guards arrived at Cesare's side, they both realized that they entered a ambush, thus they both charged into a fray immediately. Though outnumbered, both Oliverotto and Vitellozzo overpowered them. Cesare then armed himself with a crossbow, and, as a surviving Papal Guard wounded Vitellozzo, Cesare fired the bolt at Oliverotto's chest.

Several hours later, both Vitellozzo and Oliverotto regained consciousness, recovering from their wounds. As they woke up, they realized that they were chained back-to-back. In front of them Cesare stood, aside Micheletto Corella. Though Oliverotto blamed Vitellozzo for the conspiracy against him, Cesare ultimately ordered Micheletto to strangle both Viellozzo and Oliverotto back-to-back, claming their "sacrifice" was invaluable to him.
War in Rome
By 1500, Cesare had Rome under his iron fist as the commander of the Papal army, though he and his father occasionally disagreed on his choices. He used Borgia towers and their captains to keep control over the five districts of Rome, as he was often away for extended periods of time to oversee the advancement of his army, in a bid to unite all of Italy under his rule.

During Ezio's infiltration of the Castel Sant'Angelo in late June 1501, Cesare was seen at the stables conversing with his three generals about their plans, where he told them to play along with his father's "tired old men's club," but to remember who they really served.

Subsequently, he shared a romantic moment with his sister. Cesare asked if their father had considered the funds requested by his banker, though she claimed he was away from the Castel and may need convincing. Cesare then left the Castel for Romagna to continue his campaign.

In 1502, Cesare continued to make use of Leonardo da Vinci's intellect, forcing him to design several war machines for his army. However, all of Leonardo's creations were eventually stolen and destroyed by Ezio Auditore, in secret, at Leonardo's own request.

In 1503, Cesare attended Juan Borgia's pagan party, where he gave a brief speech on a soon to be united Italy. After Cesare commanded the party to begin, Rodrigo reminded him that they had not agreed to conquer Italy. However, Cesare stated that he was now in control, although not officially, and simply told his father to enjoy himself.

Later that year, Cesare had his close friend, Francesco Troche, assassinated by Micheletto Corella, for telling his brother of Cesare's intentions for Romagna. Cesare then ordered Micheletto to assassinate the actor Pietro Rossi, Lucrezia's secret lover. In August of 1503, due to the interference of the Roman Assassins, Cesare's army and funds had significantly diminished. Enraged, Cesare confronted Rodrigo, demanding to know what had happened. There, Cesare and Rodrigo argued over the former's insatiable lust for power. Rodrigo commented that he had given Cesare all he had, yet his son was never satisfied.

Cesare demanded that his father give him the Apple of Eden, but Rodrigo refused. At this point, Lucrezia barged in, crying out to her brother that their father was attempting to poison him with the bowl of apples he had left out.

An outraged Cesare responded by charging Rodrigo and shoving the poisoned apple down his throat, the poison in the apple dripped out and killed Rodrigo. Cesare then demanded the Apple's whereabouts from Lucrezia, who confessed under much pressure. However, Ezio beat Cesare to the Basilica di San Pietro, the Apple's location, and retrieved the Piece of Eden before him.

Cesare's rule met a downward spiral from there. As a final stab from his father, Cesare had consumed enough of the poison to leave him weak for months. While he recovered, Ezio and the other Assassins used the Apple to dwindle his remaining forces, while the Vatican meanwhile fully rejected Cesare's request for support, seeing the Borgia's money as "tainted."

Cesare sent Micheletto to retrieve his armies from the battlefield in order to reclaim Rome, however, he was confronted by the highest-ranking Assassins as he awaited his return. As the last of his followers fell, Fabio Orsini arrived with the Papal Guard and a warrant for Cesare's arrest by the order of Pope Julius II. Cesare was taken away, imprisoned, and later exiled to Spain.

From Rome to Spain
Subsequently following his arrest, Cesare was imprisoned in the Castel Sant'Angelo. However, he was able to escape the prison and flee. Though Cesare was later recaptured, Pope Julius II concluded that Cesare needed to be transferred to a more secure prison, and had the Templar moved to the Castillo de la Mota, Aragon, in Spain. Though Ezio had intended to kill Cesare despite his imprisonment, he was unaware of where Cesare had been transferred. He, Machiavelli, and Leonardo began tracking him down, while Micheletto, who had evaded imprisonment and remained loyal to Cesare, planned for his master's escape.

In 1506, Micheletto bribed a prison guard at the Castillo. Having had rope smuggled in for him, Cesare climbed down from his window and sneaked past the main gate in his stolen guard uniform. Meeting with Micheletto, he was informed that Ezio was currently tracking him, though he said nothing on the matter. Micheletto then told his master that he had made arrangements in Valencia. With this, Cesare made his escape, and rode to Valencia with Micheletto.

Attack on Valencia
{{Dialogue4|Cesare|I must make a good escape. I'll go to Viana, in Navarre, just across the border. Let them try and recapture me then. Whilst Cesare was raising a small army, he spent most of his time coordinating battle tactics at the Lone Wolf Inn. Ezio and Machiavelli soon discovered this, however, and were able to destroy the encampment and twelve ships with Leonardo's hand-held bombs.

Later, they spied on him from the roof of the Lone Wolf. Cesare blamed Micheletto for the Assassins' attack, and insulted him as a dog, remarking that he should find somewhere to die. During his tirade against Micheletto, Cesare claimed that he would cross the borders and join his brother-in-law, King John III of Navarre to seek his aid.

Though Micheletto begged Cesare, and reminded him of his loyal service, Cesare continued to insult him. However, this rebounded on Cesare, as Micheletto, realizing how much his service meant to his ungrateful master, attempted to murder Cesare by strangling him. However, Cesare was able to shove Micheletto away and shoot him in the head, killing him. Ezio and Machiavelli, who had watched the scene unfold, made a noise from above. Cesare, who heard this, fired his rifle and wounded Machiavelli.

Ezio then took Machiavelli to a doctor instead of attacking Cesare, giving the Templar a chance to escape Valencia and cross the borders to the Kingdom of Navarre.

Siege of Viana and death
In March of 1507, Cesare tried to regain his lost honor by commandeering John III's vast army during the Siege of Viana, after which, should he be victorious, he would regain the support of the French. However, unbeknownst to him, Ezio caught wind of Cesare's involvement in the battle and set out for Viana.

During the siege, Ezio located and charged Cesare on the battlefield, though Cesare held him back just long enough to dodge his hidden blade and flee. Ezio's pursuit was delayed by several cannonball impacts that stunned him, and incapacitated the other soldiers in the area.

Ezio soon caught up to him on the outskirts of the castle walls, where Cesare had his soldiers kill a civilian woman, who was crying for him to help her son, who had been injured. Ezio eventually faced Cesare on the walls of Viana's Castle and fought against him, with Cesare wielding a sword and a pistol.

Though Cesare attacked with speed and skill, while also periodically calling reinforcing troops, Ezio nevertheless defeated him, eventually pinning him to the ground. When Cesare vowed not to die at the hands of man, Ezio declared that he would leave Cesare "in the hands of Fate," and threw him off of the castle wall to his death.

Personality
Cesare was born into the Templar Order and, like many of his other siblings, was raised by his father into his personal weapon. However, Cesare was naturally an aggressive and ambitious person, and would do anything - including having his own family or friends murdered - in order to obtain power.

Cesare maintained an incestuous relationship with his sister, Lucrezia Borgia and promised her that she would be his queen when he ruled Italy. As such, he frequently descended into jealous rage due to her many dalliances with other men (whom she would normally woo in order to spite her unfaithful brother). However, in his attempts to discover the location of the Apple, he physically assaulted her, answering her tearful question if he had ever loved her by saying, "You are my sister, nothing more."

Over time, Cesare came to believe that no mortal man could kill him, and that he would lead mankind into a new era; a belief that he held onto until the moment of his death.

Trivia
Appearance and behavior

*In the novelization of Brotherhood, Cesare's face had been apparently deformed by the "New Disease," and he had resorted to wearing a mask. However, in the game, he is never seen with either said deformity or mask.
**Historically, Cesare was infected by the recent outbreak of syphilis and resorted to wearing a mask in public.
*According to the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel, Cesare excelled at bullfighting. Machiavelli believed he showed such an interest in the sport due to its origins in Spain, and his aggressive nature.
*Historically, Cesare fathered 11 illegitimate children, some of whose mothers remain unknown.

Combat
*Despite being shown to be adept with a crossbow in both Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy and Assassin's Creed: Ascendance, Cesare never wields the weapon in Brotherhood.
*Since Cesare is immune to executions or deadly counters and will even harm Ezio if he tries to counter-kill, he can only be killed by breaking his defense and attacking repeatedly. Ezio may also shoot him with his pistol.

Others
*His given name "Cesare" is pronounced in Italian as "Cheh-ser-ay." It is the Italian variation of the name Caesar.
*Cesare's comments about bloodshed and the need for "a cleansing" is strikingly similar to the source of Abstergo's name, which is Latin for "I cleanse."
*Historically, it is said that Niccolò Machiavelli greatly admired Cesare. However, in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, while Machiavelli does respect his ability to enforce his will, he also seeks to eliminate Cesare and his family members alongside Ezio.
*Cesare has been compared to other Roman Templar rulers. Giovanni Borgia relived the memories of Marcus Junius Brutus through the bleeding effect and mistook Cesare for Julius Caesar, attempting to kill Cesare with a knife. Ezio Auditore compared Cesare to Caligula, due to the similarities in their high opinions of themselves.
*When replaying the memory in Viana, after the cutscene in which Ezio drops Cesare from the castle walls, his body can be seen when looking down from the battlements before the memory fades out.
*When talking to Shaun in the Sanctuary, he says that Cesare sent the Pope a letter about the night of his wedding with his French wife and that he had "done the deed eight times."
*Cesare is mentioned in Assassin's Creed: Revelations during "The Prince's Banquet" where Ezio is disguised as a minstrel and sings about Cesare's death.
*There is an action figure of Cesare available, supplied by the UK branch of the Amazon retailer.
*Cesare is the only main antagonist in Ezio's Trilogy of games to be killed by Ezio himself. Rodrigo was spared by Ezio and Ahmet was killed by Selim.
Madonna Solari (unknown - 1500) was the owner of the Rosa in Fiore brothel in Rome, and sister to Santino.

Biography
Madame of Roma
As the Madame of the popular Rosa in Fiore, Madonna Solari encouraged her courtesans to do "whatever necessary" to gain their visitors' patronage.

Despite playing host to many customers, the brothel itself was not in good shape, and as a certain courtesan of the Rosa once described, "Filth can be hidden by shadows. Foul smells masked by stronger scents, mostly imported. Disease is... difficult."

Madonna Solari also quickly dismissed any of her girls who showed symptoms of disease, but as they entertained many clients from several foreign lands, they were fighting a "losing battle."

At one point, Madonna Solari and her brother attempted to delve into slave trade as well; however, this angered Cesare Borgia, who saw this as "dabbling in trades where they are unwelcome." In exchange for their lives, she and Santino allowed Cesare to take one of their courtesans, Fiora Cavazza, as his own.

Death
For a time, Madonna Solari aided the Assassins in their fight against the Borgia, but soon became lazy, taking preference to attending parties instead. She also began taking bribes from Templar priests and clergymen to divulge information about the Assassins.
Federico Auditore da Firenze (1456 – 1476) was a Florentine noble and a member of the Assassin Order, trained into the Brotherhood by his father.

Federico was the eldest son of Giovanni and Maria Auditore da Firenze, as well as the elder brother of Ezio, Claudia, and Petruccio. He was also the nephew of Mario Auditore.

Biography
Early life
Federico lived a comfortable life with his family in the Palazzo Auditore of Florence, and was originally schooled to become a banker in a Medici bank. However, he was a notorious slacker, and once hid a sack of the bank's money on the roof of the building as a joke. Being an Auditore, he was merely removed from the payroll and saved from harsher consequences.

As the eldest child of the Auditore, Federico took defending his family quite seriously. When Antonio Maffei arrived up at their palazzo in an attempt to capture Giovanni for the first time, Giovanni, having not yet recovered from his recent skirmish, elected to escape. He instructed Federico to buy him time, telling him to defend the family at all costs.

Federico succeeded in delaying the guards long enough for Giovanni to leave, telling them that his father was not home. After the men barged into the house and discovered it empty of all but Federico and his mother, Federico kicked them out, and told them to never doubt an Auditore again.

Betrayal and death
In 1476, as Ezio was fighting against Vieri de' Pazzi, a member of a rival noble family, Federico showed up to help his brother. He proved to be an excellent fighter, and after they won the brawl, Federico instructed Ezio to loot money from the defeated enemies.

After Ezio did so, Federico then directed him to a doctor to have his injuries treated. Once Ezio had been serviced by the doctor, the two then had a race and climbed to the top of a nearby church to take in the sights of Florence.

The following morning, Federico lounged about at home while Ezio ran errands for their family, whereby Ezio teased him for his inactivity. However, later that day, Federico was beaten and captured by the city guards, along with his father and younger brother Petruccio.

Federico was held prisoner overnight, while Ezio frantically attempted to secure the release of his family. The next morning, Federico was hanged alongside his father and brother, the victims of a Templar conspiracy orchestrated by the Pazzi.

Years later, Rodrigo Borgia informed Ezio that there had been no need to kill Federico or Petruccio, but that he had only executed them to establish a point.

Characteristics and personality
Federico was a witty, sharp, and joking individual who liked to tease Ezio, but refused to tolerate it if someone else harmed him. He started his training as an Assassin with his father before Ezio, and passed on much of his learnings of combat and freerunning to his younger brother.

Ezio also likely inherited his womanizing habits from Federico, who once encouraged his brother to talk to a passing attractive girl, Cristina Vespucci. He offered his younger brother advice on how to charm her, and after Ezio had only managed to embarrass himself, Federico laughed and reassured him that, since he had gotten a smile out of her, she would remember him.

Trivia
*Federico strongly resembles Francesco I de' Medici in his late teenage years, both in attire and facial properties.
*In-game, when the Auditore are about to be executed, Federico is on the left-hand side and wearing his usual clothes. However, in the Uberto Alberti database video, Federico is in the middle, and is wearing differently colored clothes.
*Federico makes a brief appearance in the first Cristina Memory of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and his corpse can be seen in the second memory.
Petruccio Auditore da Firenze (1463 – 1476) was born into the Assassin Order, as the son of Maria and Giovanni Auditore. He was the youngest of the Auditore children, and brother to Federico, Ezio and Claudia.

Petruccio was destined to be trained as an Assassin upon coming of age, but never received the opportunity, or even discovered his family heritage. He was executed in 1476 as an alleged accomplice to his father, who was falsely accused of treason.

Biography
Early life
Petruccio Auditore was a young Florentine nobleman living during the late 15th century. His father Giovanni was a banker, but was also in secret an Assassin, who planned to prepare Petruccio and his brothers for their future in the Order.

However, Petruccio was born sickly. His constant illness forced his parents to take him out of school, and keep him bed-ridden for most of his life.

Death and legacy
In 1476, Petruccio asked his brother, Ezio, to retrieve feathers for him, the reason for which he kept a secret. Ezio agreed, but only if his younger brother returned to bed afterwards.

The next day, Petruccio was arrested alongside his father and brother on a false charge of treason against the ruling Medici family; he was publicly executed the day after.

That same night, he, Federico and Giovanni were given a proper burial by Ezio.

Trivia
*When viewing Uberto Alberti's database video, Petruccio can be seen hanging from the gallows on the left-hand side, wearing different clothes.
*Throughout the entire game, it is never hinted why Petruccio actually needed the feathers. But in Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, it is suggested that he was collecting them as a gift for his mother.
*Besides Caterina Sforza's children in the Battle of Forlì DLC, Petruccio is the only non-adult to feature in Assassin's Creed II (apart from the brief memory of Ezio as a baby).

Giovanni Auditore da Firenze (1436 – 1476) was a Florentine nobleman, and head of the Auditore family in Florence. A banker working for the Medici family, Giovanni's true nature as an Assassin was known only to a few. Raised and trained along with his brother Mario from birth to be an Assassin, Giovanni had been aware of the Templar Order for almost all of his life.

Giovanni was also the husband of Maria Auditore, and father to Federico, Ezio, Claudia and Petruccio. He sought to induct his children into the Order, but had only revealed his allegiance to his wife by the time of his death; despite this, he had already begun to train his eldest son in the Assassin ways, albeit secretively.

Biography
Early years
The second son, or grandson, of Ilario Auditore, Giovanni was born in Monteriggioni, in 1436, two years after his elder brother Mario. From an early age, both Giovanni and his brother were taught the ways of the Assassins, although Giovanni was also tutored in banking and other subjects as well.

With time, Giovanni left the family Villa and joined Ilario in Florence, where he was serving as Gonfaloniere to Cosimo de' Medici. In 1452, Giovanni met and married Maria de' Mozzi, to whom he revealed himself to be an Assassin. After four years, their first son Federico was born, followed by Ezio in 1459, Claudia in 1461, and Petruccio in 1463.

Sometime in 1454, Giovanni also aided the members of his Brotherhood in dealing with the Shroud. After Mario uncovered the artifact under Monteriggioni, he summoned his brother to bring it out of the city, and into the protection of the Order.

Giovanni also eventually revealed to Lorenzo de' Medici, his patron, his true nature as an Assassin, and undertook several missions for him behind the back of his own children. In 1476, Giovanni tracked down Rodrigo Borgia, Grand Master of the Templars, in a Florentine alleyway.

Although Giovanni managed to eliminate two of his bodyguards, and incapacitate the third, Rodrigo escaped. The Assassin handed the third guard over to Uberto Alberti, the Gonfaloniere of justice, for questioning.

Pursuing Rodrigo Borgia
Through torture, the bodyguard revealed that Galeazzo Maria Sforza, the Duke of Milan was to be assassinated by the Templars, and Giovanni was quickly sent to prevent this. Though he arrived too late to save the Duke, Giovanni was able to eliminate some of his murderers whilst the Duke’s bodyguards killed the rest. With all the assassins dead, Giovanni searched the corpse of Giovanni Andrea Lampugnani, and found a pouch of coins stamped with the seal of Venice.

Arriving in Venice, Giovanni infiltrated the Basilica di San Marco, and eavesdropped on a group of men conversing in a nearby room. The two men then dispatched a courier, with a message for their master in Rome.

Giovanni chose to pursue the courier, before finally confronting him in a secluded area. After a lengthy battle, he overpowered and pinned down the courier, his hidden blade to the man’s throat. Refusing to answer his questions, the courier impaled himself on the blade, leaving Giovanni frustrated, albeit with a letter sealed with the crest of the House of Barbarigo. Returning to Florence, Giovanni presented the letter to Lorenzo de' Medici, although they found that it was encoded.

That night, Giovanni was summoned to meet with Lorenzo and Uberto. Before leaving, Maria reminded her husband that their son, Ezio, who was watching them from behind a nearby haystack, was becoming suspicious of his banker father having to leave the Palazzo at night so often. Giovanni promised that he would speak with him soon, and then left.

Arriving at the meeting, Uberto falsely claimed that Father Antonio Maffei had been unable to decrypt the letter, thus, the only course of action was for Giovanni to deliver the letter himself. Giovanni agreed, and headed for Rome with a copy of the letter in hand.

In Rome, he delivered the letter, and followed it until it reached the hands of Rodrigo Borgia. Giovanni followed Rodrigo into Basilica di San Pietro, where the two finally exchanged words. Rodrigo remarked his respect for the Assassin's skills, and offered him the chance to join the Templar Order, and live to see the "new world."

Giovanni refused, and was subsequently attacked by a number of Rodrigo's henchmen. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he prevailed, although a knife thrown by Rodrigo wounded him gravely, and allowed the Templar the opportunity to escape.

Returning home, Giovanni had his wife tend his wound, and confessed that he feared the assassination of the Duke of Milan had only been the beginning of a much wider conspiracy. Before he could go on however, the two were interrupted by their son Federico, who warned that Father Maffei had arrived with armed guards. Asking his son to provide him cover, Giovanni slipped out of the palazzo through a secret passage within the fireplace.

Betrayal and execution
At some point after this, Giovanni found evidence suggesting Francesco de' Pazzi had committed murder, and he thus had Uberto Alberti arrest him. As a result, Francesco's son Vieri developed an intense rivalry with Ezio Auditore.

Following a brawl the two had on the Ponte Vecchio, Giovanni scolded his son for his behavior, although he noted that it reminded him of himself when he was younger. He then tasked Ezio with delivering a letter to Lorenzo, but was surprised to learn that Lorenzo had left the city for a short while. Undeterred, Giovanni had Ezio deliver several more letters, as well as pick up a letter from a pigeon coop near the Piazza della Signoria.

Whilst his son was away, however, armed guards sent by Uberto suddenly invaded the Palazzo Auditore and arrested Giovanni and his two other sons, taking them to be imprisoned in the tower of the Piazza della Signoria. Before long, Ezio had managed to climb the clock tower, where Giovanni told his son to empty his chest in the room behind the fireplace, and retrieve the evidence exonerating him and his family. Ezio did so, and delivered the evidence to Uberto that night.

The next day however, Giovanni was shocked to find Uberto and Rodrigo Borgia together, with Uberto denying ever receiving any evidence. Giovanni and his sons were then sentenced to death on the grounds of treason. A horrified Ezio, watching from below, cried out that Uberto was lying, but was unable to prevent his father's hanging.

Hours later, Giovanni's corpse was to be disposed of in the Arno, though Ezio was able to retrieve his, Federico's and Petruccio's bodies, and give them a proper funeral.

Legacy
Despite his death, Giovanni's actions would have lasting consequences for his surviving son: Ezio Auditore.

Having prepared for a turn of events similar to what ultimately happened, Giovanni had arranged for his live-in servant Annetta to take his wife and daughter to her sister's establishment, where they would be safe. There, Annetta's sister Paola, a courtesan Giovanni had previously represented in court, and introduced into the Assassin's Order, provided Ezio with some basic training in blending, and gave him the skills necessary to execute his revenge on Uberto Alberti before he left the city.

When Ezio arrived in Monteriggioni, his uncle Mario was shocked to discover that his brother had never told Ezio of his Assassin heritage, or that Giovanni himself had indeed been an Assassin. Despite this, Ezio soon vowed to take up his fathers work, which included locating what remained of the Codex, and to avenge his death with the blood of Rodrigo Borgia and his Templar allies.

In 1510, Ezio discovered a letter by Giovanni written in 1458, referencing Altaïr's library, setting in motion his search for knowledge.

Personality and traits
Giovanni was trained from birth in the Assassin ways, alongside his brother Mario. Despite this mutual upbringing, the two parted ways later in life due to a philosophical divide over how to live their lives. Giovanni, who had been tutored in banking, preferred to live a calmer life, whereas Mario wished to live a life with more action. This divide eventually led to the two brothers losing touch with one another; to such a degree that upon his arrival in Monteriggioni in 1476, Ezio Auditore was unaware who exactly his uncle was.

The divide also affected how Giovanni brought up his children, with none of them explicitly knowing of their heritage; however, although his children were unaware of his true nature, Giovanni did allow others to know of it, trusting in their secrecy. Among these were many of Giovanni's contacts within the mercenaries, courtesans and thieves guilds, who knew the Assassin by name, suggesting a certain degree of mutual-trust between them.

Despite never telling his children of their heritage, Giovanni did work to prepare them for life as an Assassin. By the time of his death, he had already begun preparing his eldest son, Federico, in the Assassin ways, and was preparing to begin training Ezio as well. A strict father, Giovanni nonetheless showed great affection for his children, and saw a younger version of himself in their antics at times.

Giovanni was a skilled warrior, and proved able to hold his own against a number of opponents in combat with relative ease, armed only with a sword and his hidden blade. He was also a competent free runner, much like his sons, and would often use the skill when shadowing a target.

Trivia
*Giovanni knew about Ezio's Eagle Vision, although it is unknown if he too possessed the skill.
*Giovanni leaves his Assassin outfit behind for Ezio to find; however, in Assassin's Creed: Lineage, it lacks the characteristic eagle's beak on the hood, as well as several other details.
*The sword Giovanni left behind for Ezio is the common sword, but in the cutscene where Giovanni is killed, it is replaced by an old Syrian sword.
*Giovanni died at the age of forty, the same age Ezio turned when he confronted Rodrigo Borgia in Rome.
*In Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, Giovanni is the last member of the Auditore family to be hanged. He calls Uberto a traitor and that their deaths will be avenged, among other things, before walking towards the gallows and meeting his fate. In Assassin's Creed II, he is killed before he can finish his sentence.
*The hidden blade bracer Giovanni used and passed on to Ezio was replaced in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood after the Fall of Monteriggioni, and is not seen subsequently. However, years later, Desmond Miles receives a bracer identical to it in modern times.
*Giovanni is briefly mentioned in Revelations and the Novel.

Rebecca Crane (born 1984) was a modern-day Assassin and the creator of the Animus 2.0 - which she affectionately referred to as "Baby."

She was a part of Lucy Stillman's team, who concentrated on acquiring the Apple of Eden before Abstergo Industries, as well as training Desmond Miles through the use of the Bleeding effect. She was the person who provided technical support for the other members of the Assassin Order alongside her fellow Assassin, Shaun Hastings.

Biography
Early life
Rebecca was one of the few Assassins who were not born into the Assassin Order, but recruited instead. Prior to joining the Order, Rebecca engaged in sports, including extreme snowboarding and skydiving. However, when she broke her leg, she began pursuing an interest in computers during her recovery, and found coding to be as exhilarating as her previous hobbies. Rebecca also dated an electronics engineer before she was contacted by the Assassins.

Some time after her own recruitment into the Order, Rebecca was responsible for the recruitment of Shaun. Since he had discovered some of Abstergo's secrets, Shaun had begun spreading the word about their plans, thus provoking unwanted attention. Rebecca attempted to warn him off, saying that he was "messing with the wrong people", though Shaun did not believe her and continued his work. Shaun later admitted that he would have wound up at the bottom of a river had Rebecca not stepped in to save his life, and brought him into the Order.

Rebecca was Clay Kaczmarek's teammate, when he was tasked to infiltrate Abstergo Industries.

Rebecca was also an old friend of Lucy Stillman, though the two did not see each other for seven years after 2005, during which Lucy worked at Abstergo. The two only reunited in 2012, after Desmond and Lucy's escape from Abstergo's laboratories.

At one point, Desmond asked Rebecca if she had ever used the Animus to learn about her ancestors, at which she commented that the lives she had relived were "lame" compared to those of Desmond's ancestors. She elaborated on this, complaining on how boring it had been spending the whole day firing guns as a Prussian mercenary.

Hiding out
In the Hideout, Rebecca served as technical support for the Animus 2.0, ensuring that nothing went wrong with the machine, or with Desmond's interaction with it. She often left notes within the Database articles that Shaun created, usually when the entries were locations that held Glyphs or Assassin's Tombs.

After Lucy had given her the memory core of the Abstergo Animus, Rebecca excitedly integrated it with her own; successfully - albeit accidentally - also transferring the encrypted files that Subject 16 had left behind in Ezio Auditore da Firenze's memories.

At the irregular moments when Desmond exited the Animus for a break, Rebecca would speak to him about the Order, and his progress with the machine; once approvingly telling him that he was a natural.

Shortly after Desmond received the warning from Minerva, Abstergo found and broke into the hideout. Rebecca helped Shaun pack up the Animus gear, while Desmond and Lucy held off the Abstergo guards. As they escaped in a van, Rebecca managed to set up the Animus within it, which allowed Desmond to enter the Animus again, finishing any remaining memories while on their way to a safe location up north.

Stay in Monteriggioni
After the team had arrived at Monteriggioni and gained access to the Sanctuary, Rebecca was again responsible for the Animus and their other equipment. To power the underground chamber, Rebecca gave Desmond several devices of her own making, which would re-route small amounts of power to their new base, upon being attached to circuit boxes across the town.

Throughout their stay in the Villa Auditore, Rebecca regularly sent e-mails to her teammates, usually involving minor matters, such as her missing MP3 player, and how Shaun had stolen Lucy's yogurt. She also informed Lucy, seemingly worried, that Desmond had been yelling in his sleep.

Journey to the Colosseum
When Desmond found out the location of the Apple, and the team had arrived at the Colosseum, Lucy took Rebecca and Shaun on an alternative route through Capitoline Hill at Shaun's suggestion, as he and Rebecca did not possess the necessary free-running abilities to reach the Apple's location. When Juno spoke to Desmond, Rebecca - along with Shaun and Lucy - could neither hear nor see her.

As Desmond retrieved the Apple, he was taken over by the "goddess", and forced to stab Lucy. However, once Juno relinquished her control, Rebecca and Shaun appeared physically unharmed.

Presiding over Desmond
After Lucy´s death and William Miles' arrival, Rebecca presided over the comatose Desmond, who had been placed back into the Animus. After Desmond had relived Ezio's adventures in Constantinople, Desmond managed to regain his consciousness. When he woke up, the Animus had once again been placed inside a van, and Rebecca occupied her usual spot besides him, keeping an eye on the machine and Desmond's health.

Characteristics and personality
Rebecca was an energetic, and somewhat immature young woman. Also, despite the fact that she had saved his life multiple times, Shaun was quick to belittle and gibe at her; though she would rarely be provoked. At one point, when she commented about a movie as Shaun was speaking of the historical background of the Bonfire of the Vanities, he irritably told her to be quiet since "the grownups are talking."

Rebecca was rather tolerant and optimistic, representing a foil to Shaun's more cynical and brash personality. As the polar opposite of her colleague, she was friendly and talkative. She showed great pride in her work, praising her redesign of the Animus as having a far more enlightened and creative construct; a "competitive edge" as she called it.

She also remained convinced that, despite Shaun's dubiousness of their methods, the Assassins were, as Desmond put it, "the good guys".

Trivia
*The name "Rebecca" is derived from the Arabic name "Rifqah," which means "company".
*When in the Animus 2.0, Rebecca adds information to the database using the name REBECCAC84. This username holds her first name and the initial of her last name.
*Her e-mail password is Snowmass84, likely to reflect her previous hobby.
*Based on her usernames and password, she may have been born in the year 1984.
*In one of her e-mails, Rebecca talks about sometimes missing her family, and her dog.
*Rebecca was originally intended to have shorter hair in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, though this was reverted for the actual game.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it is suggested that Rebecca is a reckless driver, as when she offers to drive the van, Shaun refuses, saying, "Ah, nice try. I've seen your car."
*It is implied that Rebecca is either a vegan or vegetarian, as she calls Desmond a "carnivore" after seeing him eat a burger.
*In The Lost Archive DLC trailer you can hear Rebecca saying "Vidic kept him in Animus too long". However, she doesn't appear in the DLC.
Paganino (unknown - 1503) was a member of both the Venetian Thieves Guild, and the Roman Thieves Guild. He was also a covert Borgia spy.

Biography
Venice
During the late 15th century, Paganino was part of the Venetian Thieves Guild led by Antonio de Magianis. He was a colleague and personal friend of Ugo and Rosa.

In 1481, Paganino and Ugo were confronted by Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who was carrying a wounded Rosa. After the group exchanged words about their Guild, Paganino helped Ezio and Rosa get safely to their headquarters, where Antonio resided.

Siege of Monteriggioni
Years later, Paganino became a spy for the Borgia, and gathered information on the Assassin Order. By January 1500, he had based himself in the Assassin headquarters in Monteriggioni.

In early January 1500, the Borgia attacked Monteriggioni, and Paganino stayed unnoticed in Mario Auditore's study in the Villa Auditore. He ran into Ezio again there, and Paganino asked him where the secret passage that Ezio was taking led to. After being told, Paganino left Ezio, saying that he had to "go help the troops."

Death
After the skirmish at the Colosseum Passion Play in August 1503, Ezio saw Paganino behaving suspiciously in the area, and recognized him from the Villa attack. As he called out to him, however, Paganino fled in panic.

Ezio pursued and tackled him, and found that he was carrying Borgia documents. As the Assassin realized that Paganino was the traitor they had been searching for, and not Niccolò Machiavelli as La Volpe had suspected, Paganino defiantly declared "Long live the Borgia!" before stabbing himself in the neck with Ezio's hidden blade.

Final words
* Ezio: Un momento! (Hey!) You were at the Villa Auditore during the attack!

Paganino runs, but Ezio is eventually able to catch him.
* Ezio: Why did you run?
* Paganino: I--
Ezio takes the letter the thief is holding and notices the seal of the Borgia. Ezio then threatens to kill him with his hidden blade.
* Ezio: You are the traitor, not Machiavelli.
* Paganino: Long live the Borgia! (pierces himself in the throat with Ezio's blade.)
* Ezio: Merda! I was right. I have to stop La Volpe before he gets to Machiavelli.

Trivia
* In the official artwork for the Siege of Monteriggioni, Paganino appears alongside Cesare Borgia at Monteriggioni's gate. However, in both the game and novelization of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, he is not present.
* Paganino is the only character to commit suicide in Brotherhood, and is also the only one who did not receive last rites from Ezio.
* Paganino's suicide is similar to that of a courier from Assassin's Creed: Lineage. There, Giovanni Auditore da Firenze catches a messenger sent by Marco Barbarigo, and threatens him with his hidden blade. However, the messenger only says "My life is not yours to take, and my secrets come with me. See you in hell." before forcing Giovanni's blade into his throat.

* Paganino: I--
Ezio takes the letter the thief is holding and notices the seal of the Borgia. Ezio then threatens to kill him with his hidden blade.
* Ezio: You are the traitor, not Machiavelli.
* Paganino: Long live the Borgia! (pierces himself in the throat with Ezio's blade.)
* Ezio: Merda! I was right. I have to stop Volpe before he gets to Machiavelli.

Claudia Auditore da Firenze (2 January 1461 - unknown) was a Florentine noblewoman during the Renaissance, and a member of the Assassin Order. She was the sister of Ezio, who became the Mentor of the Italian Assassins.

In 1476, Claudia became the financial accountant of the town of Monteriggioni, which was under the leadership of her uncle Mario Auditore. The town flourished with Claudia's organization and the money made from Monteriggioni's shops and organizations, which had opened again.

In January 1500, Monteriggioni was besieged and largely destroyed by the Borgia army, under command of Cesare Borgia, and the Auditore were left homeless. Against her brother's desire for Claudia and her mother Maria to go to their hometown of Florence, Claudia and Maria followed Ezio to Rome, where Claudia became the madame of the Rosa in Fiore, the city's most popular brothel.

Eventually, after proving herself to be a worthy fighter to her brother, Ezio inducted Claudia into the Order of Assassins. The following year, Claudia was captured by Borgia die-hards, and subsequently saved by Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli. She stepped down as madame of the Rosa in Fiore, and stayed in Florence with her friend Paola to recover until 1507.

Claudia was given temporary control of the Italian Assassins in 1510, when her brother left on a journey to the Middle East to find the library of the legendary Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, which was said to be in Masyaf. She held this position until her brother returned in late 1512, after which Ezio resigned from the Order and assigned a successor.

Biography
Early life
Claudia was born on the 2nd of January, 1461 in the city of Florence, as the daughter of the Florentine banker Giovanni Auditore da Firenze, and his wife Maria. She had two elder brothers, Federico and Ezio, and a younger brother named Petruccio.

As of 1476, Claudia was betrothed to Duccio de Luca, a member of another noble family in Florence. Eventually, Claudia heard rumors of Duccio's adulterous actions, and her brother Ezio noticed her sadness over this. On Claudia's behalf, Ezio went to see Duccio, confirming the rumors and beating him up in a fight. After this, the relationship between Claudia and Duccio ended.

A few days later, their home - the Palazzo Auditore - was attacked by Pazzi guards. The guards arrested Giovanni, Federico and Petruccio, and left Maria in shock. Claudia and the Auditore housemaid Annetta took Maria and hid themselves in the Palazzo, until Ezio arrived to find their home ransacked. Annetta took Claudia and Maria to her sister Paola's home, while Ezio went to the Palazzo della Signoria to find their father and brothers.

Despite Ezio's efforts, Giovanni, Federico and Petruccio were executed on false accusations of treason by the Florentine Gonfaloniere Uberto Alberti, working for Rodrigo Borgia - the Grand Master of the Templar Order. Claudia and Maria resided safely in Paola's home, which turned out to be a brothel, while Ezio exacted revenge on Uberto Alberti - which became the stepping stone to his eventual induction into the Assassin Order, of which their father was secretly a member.

Living in Monteriggioni
After Ezio was successful in his objective, he took Claudia and Maria to travel to Monteriggioni with him, where their uncle Mario Auditore owned a villa.

Successfully fleeing the city, they traveled through the Tuscan countryside, until they were ambushed by Ezio's rival, Vieri de' Pazzi, near Monteriggioni. Ezio, trying to fend off Vieri's men, was eventually joined by their uncle Mario and his mercenaries, who rescued them and led them into the town. Showing them around the city, Ezio made clear to Claudia that they were only staying there temporarily, and Ezio planned to travel further west to Spain.

Ezio was eventually persuaded by his uncle Mario to finish his father's work in the Assassin Order, and he decided to stay in the Villa Auditore, to Claudia's displeasure. Some time later, Mario told Claudia to keep track off Monteriggioni's finances in a record book, which infuriated Claudia, who was used to a luxurious lifestyle. Over time, Claudia got used to her new job, but missed Ezio while he was journeying around Italy to take down the Templars.

During Ezio's journey, he occasionally returned to Monteriggioni with finances for rebuilding the town, and with Claudia's organization skills, the town sprung back to life again and became more populated. Claudia also married Mario's captain, and in 1488 she was pregnant with his child.

On 1 January 1500, Claudia's brother and uncle returned from their journey to Rome to kill Rodrigo Borgia, who had become Pope Alexander VI. Upon reuniting with Ezio, Claudia asked him if the Spaniard, Rodrigo Borgia, was finally dead, though he declined to answer straight away.

That day, the town was already preparing for Claudia's birthday the next day, though Claudia wished to keep the party a secret from her brother, in order to surprise him. Later the same day, Claudia joined Ezio, Maria, Mario, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Caterina Sforza in Mario's study, where Ezio told about his choice to spare Rodrigo's life and his discovery in the vault underneath the Vatican - a projection of Minerva, a member of the First Civilization.

The following morning, on Claudia's birthday, Monteriggioni was besieged by the Borgia, under the command of Rodrigo's son Cesare, Captain General of the Papal army. Claudia secured her mother and several other villagers in the sanctuary underneath her villa, but was found and attacked by Borgia soldiers upon leaving the villa. She was saved by her heavily-wounded brother, who led the survivors through a secret passage underneath Monteriggioni. Upon arriving outside safewly, Ezio informed Claudia and Maria that Cesare killed Mario, and told them to go to Florence. However, they both wished to aid Ezio, and they secretly followed him to Rome, the heart of Borgia and Templar power.

Leading the Roman courtesans
Claudia and Maria made their way to the Assassin headquarters on Tiber Island in Rome, where they met with Niccolò. Niccolò suspected Ezio to be visiting the courtesans at the Rosa in Fiore, and redirected the women to the brothel.

Conversing with the courtesans, Claudia and Maria were joined by Ezio, who had just come back from a failed attempt to save the brothel's owner, Madonna Solari, from slave traders. Without anyone to lead the courtesans, Claudia offered to take over the ownership of the brothel, much to Ezio's dissatisfaction.

On Maria's request, Ezio agreed, and Claudia and her courtesans started retrieving intelligence for the Assassin Order from the Borgia, beginning to attain information on the location of Caterina Sforza. Meeting with Ezio and the other guild leaders at the Assassin hideout with the necessary information, the Assassins decided that their next step was to assassinate Rodrigo and Cesare Borgia.

Claudia continued to lead the courtesans for the coming years, and in 1503 she joined the Assassins at the hideout again, where she revealed that a senator named Egidio Troche was closely related with Cesare's "Banker". Claudia pointed Ezio in the senator's direction, and set her courtesans to follow Ezio when he went to assassinate the Banker, taking his money with them to the Rosa in Fiore.

However, these courtesans were followed by Borgia guards, and they infiltrated the brothel. Claudia armed herself with a knife, and single-handedly took out all the guards, right before Ezio entered the brothel in hopes of saving her. Ezio was amazed by Claudia's efforts, and in August 1503, he called Claudia to the hideout again.

Entering the ceremony hall, Ezio inducted Claudia into the Assassin Order in the presence of the other Assassins, while Ezio himself was promoted to Mentor and leader of the Italian Assassins. Claudia proceeded to perform a Leap of Faith into the Tiber from the top of the hideout.

Ezio infiltrated the Castel Sant'Angelo soon afterwards, aiming to kill Rodrigo and Cesare. To his astonishment, Ezio witnessed Cesare kill Rodrigo with a poisoned apple, and without his father's power in the Church, Cesare saw his control over Rome weakening immensely. Claudia informed Ezio that a French cardinal, Georges d'Amboise, revealed that he was to meet with Cesare soon, and Ezio left to interrupt the meeting. Claudia joined Ezio, Niccolò, La Volpe and Bartolomeo d'Alviano in defeating the last of Cesare's supporters, and witnessed his arrest at the hands of Fabio Orsini and the Papal Guard.

The next year, Maria grew weak and started talking of Giovanni, Federico and Petruccio again. Some time later, Maria died due to illness. Claudia was left in sole control of the courtesans, but was captured by a group of Borgia remnants, led by a Templar spy named Bruno, the same year.

Bruno pretended to work for Niccolò, and directed both him and Ezio to where Claudia was being held captive, saying it was a secret Templar hideout. Claudia, held by ropes, saw her clothes get ripped off by one of the Templars, until Ezio and Niccolò joined them. Niccolò and Ezio were able to overcome the Borgia fanatics and rescue Claudia, but she eventually chose to resign as the madame of the Rosa in Fiore. Claudia left for Florence, where she stayed with Paola to recover from the ferocious Templar attack. La Volpe arranged for Rosa, a Venetian thief, to replace her as madame.

Serving the Assassins
Ezio continued to chase after Cesare, and eventually managed to kill the Templar Grand Master during the Siege of Viana in 1507. Returning to Rome from Spain, Ezio asked Machiavelli to send Claudia back to Rome as soon as he would reach Florence. Claudia returned to Rome some time later, having grown to love the city more than her home of Florence.

Claudia continued to serve the Assassins, acting as an advisor to Ezio. In 1510, Ezio discovered a letter from their father, which detailed the location of the library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins and one of the most legendary Assassins of the Order. Though not showing the letter to Claudia, Ezio revealed that he aimed to travel to Masyaf in hopes of finding the library. Wishing Ezio luck on his journey and asking him to write to her occasionally, Claudia was temporarily left in control of the Italian Assassin Brotherhood.

Occasionally, Claudia received letters from her brother detailing the progress of his journey, which eventually led him to Constantinople. He also revealed to her the feelings he was starting to have for a Venetian woman named Sofia Sartor.

In Ezio's absence, Claudia faced the problem of Pope Julius II's declining health, which troubled the Assassins due to Julius having been their protector for numerous years. Additionally, she received a letter from Desiderius Erasmus, a Dutch scholar and the leader of the Northern European Assassins.

In late 1512, Ezio returned to Rome with Sofia, who had become his wife after their marriage in Venice. Claudia revealed to him the good news of Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, son of Ezio's late friend and ally Lorenzo de' Medici, being close to the Papacy, and showed him Erasmus' letter.

Additionally, Claudia congratulated Ezio on his marriage, approving of his wife, "even if she [was] a Venetian." Ezio, having decided to resign from the Order, revealed that he chose Lodovico Ariosto as his successor as Mentor. Claudia, pointing out Ariosto's relationship to Alfonso d'Este and his wife Lucrezia Borgia, heavily protested against this, and was even more infuriated upon hearing of Ezio's desire to build his own vineyard and to start writing.

Later life
Claudia eventually married again, and stayed with her new husband in Rome. Despite being angry at Ezio at first, Claudia came to enjoy her visits to Ezio and Sofia's villa in the Tuscan countryside, and grew to love her new niece and nephew, Flavia and Marcello.

Despite being 15 years older than Sofia, Claudia didn't take up a motherly role to her sister-in-law and they became very close, with Sofia occasionally taking her children to visit Claudia in Rome.

Characteristics and personality
In her younger years, it was evident that Claudia had been too spoiled by Giovanni, and was unafraid to be violent when a girl merely "looked at her boyfriend." Due to her temper, Giovanni was forced to raise her dowry by 1,000 florins, since she scared off all of her suitors. At times, she was also seen to be immature, complaining petulantly after Mario assigned her to manage Monteriggioni's finances.

Regardless, Claudia was quite capable of handling and keeping track of the town's bankroll, as well as of her brother's purchases and earnings. Her capability in business management again became useful when she volunteered - despite Ezio's initial protest - to take over the brothel in Rome. Under her leadership, the Rosa in Fiore became the most popular brothel in the city, as well as an effective intelligence-gathering arm for the Assassins.

Claudia was also kind with her family, being especially emotional over her father and brothers' execution, her mother's emotional trauma, and leaving her home and her friends in Florence. Claudia was Ezio's only sister, and unlike her brothers, who were executed on the orders of Rodrigo Borgia to prove a point to the Assassins, she was spared, likely because of her gender.

Trivia
Assassin's Creed II
*Claudia, as with most characters, appears not to age over the course of the game, and remains at the same desk in the Villa Auditore for 23 years. After she complains about being put to work, her only interaction with Ezio is asking if he is there to look at the book of finances.
*When Ezio starts earning income from Monteriggioni, Claudia states that she will keep any money past the chest's maximum capacity, with no explanation of what she intends to do with all the money.
*Although she is always sitting in the Villa Auditore through most of the game, Claudia appears in the "vision" Ezio has at his home during the Bonfire of the Vanities.
*There is a glitch where, if you manage to bump into Claudia and knock her down, she will be given the voice of one of the guards (since knocking her down is normally not supposed to be possible).

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
*Claudia still appears quite young, despite her being 38 years old at the beginning of the game. Her skin appears to be paler than it was before as well.
*When Claudia is inducted into the Assassin Order, her outfit is similar to that of Maria Thorpe in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines and Assassin's Creed II.
*Like her brother, Claudia wields a knife with an Icepick Grip, as shown in the memory "Paper Trail."
*Claudia is not listed as an Assassin in the Animus database, despite her induction within the main story.
Rashid ad-Din Sinan (unknown - 1191), also known as Al Mualim (English: The Mentor or The Master) and often nicknamed the Old Man of the Mountain, was the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins during the High Middle Ages until his death in 1191, and mentor to his successor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

He was also secretly a member of the Knights Templar. In his desire to obtain the Apple of Eden, he began to work with the organization that was once his sworn enemy. Rashid's teachings and work had a positive influence on the Assassins, up until his betrayal of the Order in 1191.

Biography
Siege of Masyaf
In 1176, Salah Al'din and his Saracen army laid siege to the fortress of Masyaf. Al Mualim, who was in charge of the Assassins at the time, had sent the Master Assassin Umar Ibn-La'Ahad to infiltrate the Saracen camp the following night.

While there, Umar was to leave a warning to Salah Al'din, using the information that was gathered by a spy who had infiltrated the camp. Umar was successful, and managed to leave a feather and dagger inside the warlord's tent. However, as he escaped, he was forced to kill a nobleman to prevent being captured.

The following day, Salah Al'din left the camp, leaving his son and second-in-command, Shihab Al'din, in charge. Shihab came over to negotiate peace, claiming that they would leave once the killer of the nobleman had been executed. They had found out about Umar because of the imprisonment of the spy, Ahmad Sofian. Al Mualim was reluctant to allow Umar, who begged for permission to do so, to take the place of Ahmad, but eventually relented. After the death of Umar, the Saracens left Masyaf.

Mentoring Altaïr and Abbas
Out of grief for Umar's death, Ahmad killed himself in front of Umar's son, the young novice Altaïr. The shocked boy told Al Mualim of this, which resulted in Al Mualim taking the body away to cover up the suicide, and he told Altaïr that he would be training as an Assassin alongside Abbas Sofian. Al Mualim told Altaïr never to tell Abbas of his father's death, believing it to be best for Abbas. Al Mualim then became mentor to both Altaïr and Abbas.

In 1189, the Templars invaded Masyaf and managed to take Al Mualim prisoner. Haras, a Templar who had infiltrated the Assassin Order, ordered the execution of all Assassins that remained in the fortress. However, Al Mualim was saved by Altaïr, who managed to kill Haras from above. Walking with Altaïr, Al Mualim told him of the pride he felt for his actions, and how much the Assassin resembled his father.

Quest for the Chalice
In 1190, Al Mualim ordered Altaïr to find a Piece of Eden known as the Chalice, shortly after he returned from an earlier assignment. During this year, Al Mualim temporarily resided in the Assassin stronghold of Alep. His second-in-command at the time, Harash, sold out the Assassin Order to the Templars, but he was soon killed by Altaïr. Shortly after this event, Al Mualim relocated to Masyaf.

Defending Masyaf
In 1191, Al Mualim sent Altaïr to retrieve a treasure beneath Solomon's Temple and bring it back to Masyaf. Altaïr was accompanied by two fellow Assassins on his journey, the brothers Malik and Kadar Al-Sayf. The mission, however, ended tragically, with Kadar losing his life, and Malik being brutally maimed due to Altaïr's disregard for the Creed.

When Altaïr reported his failure to Al Mualim, the master was infuriated, though his anger was curbed somewhat when Malik returned, revealing that he had managed to bring back the artifact. However, Robert de Sable and his Templars had followed the Assassin and, intent on recovering their treasure, moved for an attack on Masyaf.

Al Mualim spoke to Robert from the safety of the fortress walls, showcasing the dedication of his Assassins by ordering three of his men – Altaïr among them – to leap from a tower, supposedly to their deaths. He continued to hold their attention while Altaïr released a trap, killing and scattering the Templar forces.

Though Altaïr saved Masyaf, Al Mualim demoted him from Master Assassin to Novice, stripping him of most of his equipment, and his authority in the Order. Al Mualim then sent him to find the traitor who had opened the gates to let the Templars through.

Altaïr was successful and brought the traitor, Masun, before him. Al Mualim offered Masun a chance to renounce the evil in his heart, but when he did not, Al Mualim killed him where he stood.

Hunt for the Nine
Al Mualim offered Altaïr a chance at redemption, and showed him a list of nine men who needed to be eliminated. He claimed them to be tyrants of their cities, thus Altaïr's job was to assassinate them. After each kill, Altaïr was to report back to Al Mualim, whereupon he would be promoted a rank, and given a piece of equipment or taught a skill. Altaïr's first target was Tamir in Damascus, and after Tamir had been killed, Altaïr rode back to Masyaf to speak with Al Mualim.

Altaïr returned with questions, saying that Tamir had told him that he knew Al Mualim well, claiming that the deed Altaïr had just performed was leading to bigger things. Al Mualim responded that he was withholding the information to make sure Altaïr did not repeat his past mistakes.

After it was settled, a piece of Altaïr's equipment was restored, and he rode towards the city of Acre to slay Garnier de Naplouse. Once Garnier's life had been taken, and Altaïr had spoken with the Bureau leader, he rode back to Masyaf to inform Al Mualim of his progress.

Al Mualim waited for Altaïr, and when he arrived, Altaïr told Al Mualim about how some of Garnier's "patients" had treated Garnier as a friend. Al Mualim claimed that a leader could find ways to make others obey them and that Altaïr should trust his own senses, not the words of his targets. When they were finished, Altaïr was promoted once more and given another piece of equipment. He rode off to Jerusalem to take the life of Talal. After the assassination, he returned to Masyaf again.

As Altaïr approached Al Mualim, he told him that the task had been completed, and that Talal was dead. Al Mualim responded by telling Altaïr that King Richard was emboldened by his victory in Acre, and planned to move south towards Jerusalem. He stated that Salah Al'din was surely aware of that, as he had gathered his men at the broken citadel of Arsuf.

While Altaïr offered to kill both Richard and Salah Al'din, Al Mualim told him that it would create too much bloodshed, and groups would be scattered. He went on to say that he should concern himself on the main task at hand, before promoting Altaïr again and returning another piece of equipment.

Altaïr rode towards Damascus to kill Abu'l Nuqoud, the merchant king. Once he had finished his task and reported to the Bureau leader, he rode for Masyaf to speak with Al Mualim once again.

Al Mualim was waiting in a small corner of his library for Altaïr, believing that his apprentice's actions would no doubt provoke the peace they desired. When he arrived, Al Mualim gave him gratitude, both on behalf of himself, and of the realm.

Altaïr told Al Mualim about how his targets always seemed so sure of their victory. Al Mualim responded that, as an Assassin, it was their duty to notice and question. However, when Altaïr began to pose further questions, Al Mualim admonished him and simply told him to trust in his Master.

Altaïr was promoted again, and another weapon was returned to him. He then rode for Acre to slay William of Montferrat. Once the deed was done, Altaïr reported to the Bureau, then returned to Masyaf to make sense of the cryptic words presented to him by William.

Al Mualim waited for Altaïr in his study at Masyaf, where Altaïr reported as usual, though Al Mualim noticed that there was something on Altaïr's mind. Al Mualim told Altaïr to speak the troubles he had, and Altaïr demanded direct answers from him, claiming that Al Mualim only gave him riddles in exchange.

Threatening to stop killing his targets if he did not receive answers, Altaïr went on to ask what bound the men he had been killing. Al Mualim threatened Altaïr with a blade, but Altaïr called his bluff, and remarked that if any other Assassin could complete the task he had been given, he would have been dead already.

Al Mualim finally conceded, and told Altaïr that the men he had been striking down were all Templars. After this, Al Mualim told Altaïr that his assignment had not changed, but merely the context. With the matter settled, Altaïr was promoted and granted another weapon, with Al Mualim asking him how he had known he would not kill him. Altaïr admitted that he had not known, and had simply taken a leap of faith.

Altaïr then rode off to take the life of Majd Addin, the regent of Jerusalem, and after the assassination had been completed, he traveled towards Masyaf.

Al Mualim greeted Altaïr, and Altaïr told him that Majd Addin's blood had been spilled. Altaïr tried to piece everything together, with Al Mualim continuing to outline the situation for him, claiming that the Templars desired control, and the ultimate creation of a supposed "New World."

Al Mualim then gave Altaïr a glimpse of the Piece of Eden, claiming that it was what had started the Trojan War, and what had enabled Jesus to turn water into wine. Although unknown to Altaïr at the time, Al Mualim tried to use the artifact's power on Altaïr, though it proved ineffective.

Altaïr gained another rank and another piece of equipment, then rode towards Damascus to assassinate Jubair al Hakim, the chief of the scholars. Once he had finished his mission and had exchanged words with the Bureau leader, Altaïr reported back to Al Mualim.

Al Mualim welcomed Altaïr home, and Altaïr pondered why Jubair's and Sibrand's lives needed to be taken. Al Mualim responded, saying that their lives should be ended, as they would have paved the way for change, in which problems were not given cause or reason to be intervened.

Al Mualim told Altaïr that the final man, Sibrand, was the last one left standing between Altaïr and Robert. Al Mualim promoted Altaïr and gave him a piece of equipment, after which Altaïr rode for Acre to kill Sibrand. Once Altaïr completed the task and had spoken to the Bureau leader, he made haste back to Masyaf to speak with the Mentor.

Al Mualim waited for Altaïr's arrival, and they discussed the last name on Al Mualim's list, Robert de Sable. Al Mualim claimed that once Robert tasted the Piece of Eden's power, he saw not a weapon to be destroyed, but a tool to be used.

Al Mualim went on, saying that Robert's life ambition of power would be completed if he got his hands on the treasure again. Al Mualim at last sent Altaïr to take Robert's life, giving Altaïr a Syrian sword to help him on his journey.

When Robert was fatally stabbed by Altaïr's blade, the dying Grand Master revealed Al Mualim to be a Templar. Robert claimed that the only difference between him and Al Mualim was that Al Mualim refused to share the power of the Piece of Eden.

Altaïr hurried back to Masyaf, only to find that the people in the city had been put under a hypnotic trance by Al Mualim. Only he and a few of his fellow Assassins remained unaffected by the Piece of Eden. After reaching the fortress gardens by dispatching several of Al Mualim's pawns, Altaïr confronted his Master, who used the power of the Piece of Eden to restrain his former student. Al Mualim taunted Altaïr from the balcony above, and Altaïr questioned him about his motives.

Al Mualim replied that he had found proof that "nothing is true and everything is permitted." He then created illusions of the nine men Altaïr had killed, and sent them to battle him. Despite being outnumbered, Altaïr defeated these copies, though he was soon bound by the artifact again. Al Mualim repeated his trick, creating several replicas of himself. However, the young Assassin managed to defeat all of them.

Binding Altaïr with the Piece of Eden's power once again, Al Mualim explained his motives; that he sought the same as Robert, but wanted the artifact for himself, hence using his apprentice to kill the Templars. Altaïr questioned why Al Mualim had allowed him to retain his mind, and the Mentor admitted that he had tried, but failed, due to his student's strength of mind.

Al Mualim explained that the artifact was behind all the legends and religious mysteries in history. Concluding they were at an end, Al Mualim and Altaïr dueled for the last time. Though attacking with skill, Al Mualim was able to counter many of Altaïr's attacks, and use the Piece of Eden to teleport across the garden. However, eventually Altaïr bested his Master.

As he died, Al Mualim claimed that he had done it all to ensure absolute peace in the world, and claimed that Altaïr would not be able to destroy the Piece of Eden.

After his death, Altaïr took his rank as the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins and burned the body of his former master in a precaution to determine whether or not his body was real, or a phantom of the Apple of Eden. However, many of his fellow Assassins refused to accept Al Mualim's betrayal, and rioted in protest against Altaïr for some time.

Characteristics and personality
Al Mualim, though known for being a wise and soft-spoken leader, at times showed himself to be mysterious and unpredictable. He never spoke of anything too personal or suspicious about himself, changing the subject or giving an unexpected answer when people started questioning him deeply.

He revealed little about himself, thus almost nothing is known about his early life, let alone anything beyond his duty as the Master of the Assassins. By his efforts, the Order became a well-known, yet obscure faction, inspiring fear and uncertainty throughout the land, and spreading rumors that only increased the already legendary reputation of the Brotherhood.

As an educated man, Al Mualim placed importance on education, spending much of his time in the Masyaf fortress, studying the books of the library. He had a thorough understanding of a variety of subjects, ranging from philosophy to science. In addition to preaching the Brotherhood's goal of peace in all things, he emphasized that the Creed pushed for peace within as well; on one occasion he advised Altaïr not to demonize his enemies.

Final words
(Al Mualim collapses. The Piece of Eden falls from his hand and rolls away.)
*Al Mualim: Impossible! The student does not defeat the teacher!
*Altaïr: Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine. (Nothing is true, everything is permitted.)
*Al Mualim: So it seems. You have won, then. Go and claim your prize.
*Altaïr: You held fire in your hand, old man. It should have been destroyed!
*Al Mualim: Destroy the only thing capable of ending the Crusades and creating true peace?! Never!
*Altaïr: Then I will!
*Al Mualim: We'll see about that...
(Altaïr approaches the Piece of Eden.)
*Al Mualim: I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing at wind... for in much wisdom... is much grief. And he that increaseth knowledge... increaseth sorrow.
*Al Mualim: Destroy it! Destroy it as you said you would!
*Altaïr: I... I can’t!
*Al Mualim: Yes you can, Altaïr... but you won’t.

Trivia
* Despite being Mentor of the Levantine Assassins, Al Mualim appears to have all ten fingers but this error has been fixed in Assassin's Creed: Revelations as well as all other Assassins in Masyaf.
* In the Penny Arcade Assassin's Creed comic, the target that Altaïr hunts implies that some Assassins, including Altaïr himself, saw Al Mualim as a father figure. This is shown when he tells him, "For I think I see Al Mualim's face in yours."
* When Altaïr uses Eagle Vision after conversing about the nine targets, Al Mualim is marked with blue, the color of an ally, despite being revealed to be a Templar in the end.
* If the player counters Al Mualim with their sword and he disappears, you can stop him from disappearing again by hitting him with a throwing knife.
* In Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles (set in 1190), Al Mualim is shown with a short black beard and dressed in merchant-like robes. However, in Revelations, he is already shown with his iconic gray beard in 1189.
* For Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Al Mualim has numerous changes to his appearance, with the addition of reddish tinge and several patterns imprinted on his robes, which is now closer to gray than black, as well and an altered face with a shorter beard. Also, Al Mualim is now missing his ring finger, a correction made to all Assassins in Masyaf.

Masun (unknown - 1911) was a resident and preacher of the village of Masyaf.

Biography
In 1191, Masun and a fellow Assassin Jamal defected to the Templar cause. When the Templars arrived at the gates of Masyaf the same year after perusing Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Masun opened the gates for them, and allowed them to lay siege to the village.

Soon after the attack on Masyaf, Altaïr found out about Masun's treachery through a letter that he had pickpocketed from the basket weaver. Interrogating Masun in a secluded area, Altaïr found out about his allegiance to the Templars. Bringing the traitor back to Al Mualim, Masun was given a final chance to repent. However the man remained defiant, and ultimately, the Mentor had no choice but to execute him.

Personality and characteristics
Masun appeared to be a madman at first sight, claiming that the Templars goal was noble and that everyone should serve them. Masun was also quite persuasive, able to advocate that Al Mualim was a bane on the village of Masyaf through his preaching skills. The man also proved very defiant, believing in what he thought was right until his death.

Trivia
* The name Maṣūn (مصون) means "well-protected" or "safeguarded" in Arabic.
* Masun is the only person Altaïr did not kill after an interrogation. All other targets that Altaïr interrogated were killed with the hidden blade.
* Masun has the same appearance as other Templar heralds that are interrogated by Altaïr in Jerusalem and Damascus.
* Masun's apprehension and execution is not detailed in the novel Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade. Altaïr travels directly to Damascus for Tamir's assassination.
