Ezio Auditore travels to Ferrara, in search of clues to the whereabouts of Leonardo Da Vinci. Upon arriving at Belriguardo Palazzo, he makes his way towards Lucrezia Borgia, the new Duchess of Ferrara, to acquire information on the locations of the stolen Villa paintings and the secrets that they possess.
Dialogue
Infiltrating the Palazzo
Ezio watches from a rooftop in a courtyard outside the palazzo, as Lucrezia Borgia returns from a horse ride.
*Guard #1: Did you have an enjoyable ride, Duchessa (Duchess)?
*Lucrezia: Hardly. I raced across the grounds at breakneck speed for fear of a knife in my back.
*Guard #1: I do not understand, Duchessa (Duchess)? Who is trying to kill you?
*Lucrezia: My father kept them at bay. Kept me safe. Now they chase after me. They want my head.
*Guard #1: But, Signora--
*Lucrezia: The countryside was supposed to be serene. Death follows me, even here. Increase the patrols and warn me of any intruders. No one is allowed in the palazzo but my husband's private guard.
Lucrezia leaves and heads for the safety of the palazzo.
*Guard #1: You heard the Duchessa (Duchess)! Sound the alarm if an intruder is spotted.
*Guard #2: Poor Alfonso, his wife has gone mad.
Ezio sneaks through the outer surroundings of the Belriguardo Palazzo arriving at a large storage hall. A crowd has accumulated at a closed entrance watched by a guard.

*Servant: What is the meaning of this? I am supposed to shine the Duchessa's (Duchess's) shoes.
*Guard #3: No one is allowed in the palazzo.
*Servant: Let me through!
Ezio navigates the remainder of the storage hall before arriving at the palazzo gardens.
*Guard #4: I heard the Duca (Duke) has borrowed guards from the Pope himself to watch over his palazzo.
*Ezio: Buongiorno (Good day), Lucrezia. Or should I say Duchessa (Duchess).
*Lucrezia: A borrowed title bestowed by my husband, ill-fitting and barely concealing the truth.
*Ezio: You can keep your life. I am here for the art on your walls.
*Lucrezia: Redecorating, are we?
*Ezio: I count five Leonardo Da Vinci paintings you have stolen, and I want them returned.
*Lucrezia: If only it were that easy. My birthplace, my family, have been taken from me. You think Ferrara loves me? I am a stranger, a castaway. An orphan. Your paintings are gone, Assassino (Assassin).
*Ezio: I do not believe you.
*Lucrezia: Frightening, is it not? To have lost so much. Perhaps we can comfort each other.
Ezio begins to seduce Lucrezia.

*Ezio: Perhaps. Where are the paintings?
*Lucrezia: Sold to Francesco Colonna...and one to someone who was special to me, Patrizio. He spends his time near Il Vaticano. I kept one for myself.
*Ezio: Give it to me.
*Lucrezia: Guards! Place Da Vinci's Annunciation in a cart. Leave it outside the walls.
*Ezio: Molto bene. (Very good.) Now, close your eyes.

Ezio moves close to Lucrezia pushing her towards a curtain, where he begins to discreetly tie her hands.
*Lucrezia: My husband will soon arrive with his guards, so it is best if you hurry.
*Ezio: Forgive me, Duchessa (Duchess).
*Lucrezia: What for?
*Ezio: No man can heal your pain. You must do so on your own. Say hello to the Duca (Duke) for me.
Lucrezia realises she has been tricked.
*Lucrezia: Guards! Guards!
Outcome
Ezio escapes the palazzo having acquired Leonardo's Annunciation and new information on the locations of the remaining four paintings. He returns to Rome, to continue his quest to find Leonardo.
Trivia
To achieve full synchronization, the player must not kill anyone.

If Ezio is wearing the Armor of Brutus during this memory, when he goes to remove his hood, during the encounter with Lucrezia, it will stay in place. This is possibly due to there being no in-game model of Ezio, hood-less, in the Armor of Brutus.
Cain in the Bible
Cain and Abel, according to the Bible, were the first two sons of Adam and Eve (Cain being the eldest). According to the Bible, Abel had pleased God with his sacrificial offering, while Cain had not. Because of that, he envied Abel, and thus killed him. God later discovered what happened, and punished him. However, instead of taking his life, He made Cain wander the earth forever. The Bible then states a cursed mark was placed upon Cain, known as the "Mark of Cain." How long ago these events occurred is unknown, according to the Bible, he and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve, placing the event of Abel's murder a generation after Adam and Eve.

Cain in Assassin's Creed II
In Assassins Creed though, Cain's story is different. Instead of Cain killing Abel because God was pleased with Abel and not Cain, Cain actually killed Abel to steal his Piece of Eden. The mark Cain was given for killing Abel was then used to create the Templars, and collect more Pieces of Eden. Subject 16 also references quotes from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' "Pearl of Great Price" scripture. The semi hidden message "Templar texts adapted by Mr. Smith" written in Morse code in a glyph sequence (Mr. Smith being an allusion to Joseph Smith, the eighteenth-century preacher who founded the LDS Church), implying that the Mormon or LDS version of Cain and Abel is more accurate, or at the very least, an accurate reflection of the Templars version of events. The relatively unique title of "Master Mahan" is mentioned as the title Cain gave himself, for being the master of the great secret. The term "Mahan" is of uncertain meaning, though possibly based on the Hebrew word maha, meaning "to destroy." This title does not seem to occur in other versions of the story.

Abstergo Industries is one of the largest multinational corporations in the world by the year 2012, serving as a front for the modern day Templar Order. They are the employers of Dr. Warren Vidic and (formerly) Lucy Stillman, the group that organized Desmond's capture, and the company that funds the Animus project.

Even though Abstergo is outwardly labeled as a company working in the fields of medicine and science, Dr. Vidic boasts of their accomplishments in fields beyond these. He claims that either Abstergo or its predecessors were responsible for every scientific accomplishment and involved in every mass progressive movement over the past millenium, though Abstergo chooses who gets credit for the accomplishments very carefully. However, these achievements are not purely of their own doing, as when Desmond asks who created the Animus' technology, Dr. Vidic cryptically replies with "Those Who Came Before."

Desmond discovers Abstergo's identity as the modern-day embodiment of the Knights Templar while being held at their laboratory. He does so after reading several e-mails, particularly one viewable in the conference room, wherein Alan Rikkin writes to Vidic: "May the Father of Understanding guide you to success," a phrase long used by the Templar Order.

Abstergo has also been hunting the last of the Assassins left in the world, hoping to end their enemies' way of life, thus eliminating any chance of their own failure. Vidic's e-mail reveals Abstergo and Assassin presence in many events throughout history, such as the Tunguska event. The emails also discuss the Philadelphia Project, in which the USS Eldridge (which was stationed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) was allegedly rendered invisible for several seconds, and sent forward in time. Experiments with the artifact related to this incident were halted, with Abstergo citing concern about paradoxes.

Mitchell-Hedge's communicators are also mentioned, along with an abstract reference to the 13 Incan Crystal Skulls that were supposedly discovered by the gentleman adventurer of the same name in the 1920's. New Age theorists state that the Crystal Skulls enable telepathy between their wielders, and therefore, the term "communicators" implies that Abstergo either has these skulls or is able to communicate using them. This communication is likely also undetectable by any modern-day Assassin.

Through the e-mails, we learn that Abstergo is being investigated for something called "New Fluoride," which they tested on an isolated community, were caught, and are currently being held in suspicion because of it. This is the reason behind the December 21, 2012 launch of their Eye-Abstergo communications satellite, as afterwards, they risk being immobilized by having their assets frozen. The 12/21/2012 launch is also significant, as it marks the end of the Mayan Long Count, 13th baktun cycle - the date set by many to be the end of the world.

Abstergo was also involved in an accident under the Denver International Airport, at Abstergo's satellite manufacturing (and possibly launch) facility. E-mails show that a member of the project apparently went insane, using the Apple present to kill almost everyone at the facility, ultimately destroying himself and the Piece. This loss caused Abstergo to capture Desmond Miles, in order to search for a replacement Piece.

Products
Vidic mentions that Abstergo invents everything to enhance everyday life, and it is also stated by Lucy that they produce anti-depressants. Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were past Abstergo employees, making Abstergo responsible for popularizing the assembly line and electricity. During World War II, the Atomic Bomb's creation was directly linked to Abstergo, with "O" (J. Robert Oppenheimer) being given the go ahead by an unnamed Abstergo employee.

Past history of the company
On July 22, 1944, an unknown member of the company sent out a memo to fellow members. They mentioned using the assembly line to control both capitalists and workers, and credited Ransom "Ranny" Olds and Henry Ford for its creation. This person further added that they hoped that in the future, the company would not have to use such "ugly chains". They mention that Abstergo's founders designed the "Plan" in 1910. This individual also brought up the Communists and said it was Abstergo's duty to save them (neutralize) and their followers. The reasons given were that they were to be allowed to eat and to reproduce. The sender of the memo further elaborates on Abstergo's goals, stating to his fellow Templars that their duty was to "shepherd those beneath us through life, even if force is required". The unknown member mentioned other Templars known only by the initials "H." and "S." (Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin) who brought on the "turmoil and fear". Towards the end of this memo, they brought up the "successful ruse of Rockefeller's dimes". This information was hidden by Subject 16 for Desmond Miles to find.

Abstergo was responsible for British mathematician Alan Turing's criminal prosecution and possibly his death. In a phone recording dating to June 1954, also hidden by Subject 16, two Templars only known by the initials "V." and "N." mention the need for Turing to be arrested. They feared "mass unemployment" if the mathematician did ended up creating a computer. The two men also mentioned American economist and senior U.S.A. Treasury Department official Harry Dexter White.

In the 1970s, Abstergo involved itself in the economic and political affairs of Iran, Argentina, and Chile. This information was also revealed to Desmond by Subject 16 via a company memo hidden in a glyph. This memo on the subject of South America stated that "to ensure company's success, company agents must be able to move freely from country to country and maintain power within all of them. A global international order must be implemented".

In Argentina, the memo tells members to inform capitalists that if they helped ensure that the junta (likely referencing The National Reorganization Process) stays in power Abstergo will pass all their corporate debt onto the Argentine people, thus quelling any attempts of popular revolt. The person who wrote the memo also added that they wanted trade unions there to be destroyed. The actions of Abstergo likely contributed to the disappearance of at least 30,000 Argentinian people in the 1970s .

In neighboring Chile, Abstergo wanted the free markets to proceed. The memo mentioned a Templar known as F., most likely Fidel Castro, who visited the country last year, thus helping things along. The memo went on to state that all public companies need to be sold to the private sector, preferably at a cheap price. The price of bread and other staples must rise, therefore ensuring that the Chilean people remain in poverty and being unable to resist. Abstergo's efforts ended up thwarting President Salvador Allende's efforts to allow the people to own Chile's corporations, which ended with his apparent suicide in 1973. This helped future dictator Augusto Pinochet to assume power. Abstergo escaped detection because it deliberately hid its involvement and implicated the U.S. government .

In Iran, Abstergo backed monarch Shah Pahlavi, Shaban Jafari, and the National Intelligence and Security Organization, otherwise known as SAVAK, against democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh. This resulted in Mosaddegh being overthrown in 1953 and dying under house arrest in 1967.

In September 1985, the research division of Abstergo worked on a prototype capable of mimicking POE capabilities across a network. They also started testing on Subject 4.

In November 2004, a member of the CIA named Gary found out about Abstergo. He mentioned to a woman, likely his wife, that Abstergo has holdings in numerous companies (Kraft, Coke etc.) and that Abstergo has interests in all companies over a certain size. He was going to publish a book on the company, but was presumably thwarted by the Templars.

Justice of the Supreme Court and templar Antonin Scalia convinced Sandra O' Connor to retire. He sent a letter to "S.". Scalia mentioned that W. (George W. Bush) will restart animosities with Iraq, giving C.'s (Dick Cheney) contractors more work. After the destruction of the Campaign finance laws, the company would be free to elect anyone they choose to the Senate, House, and eventually the Presidency.

In January 2012, the head of the company left it to an unknown person. He warned his successor of a crisis, that once the free market falls, the people will turn against them.

However, the player does not seem to be aware of the company's association with the Templar Order or their war against the Assassins. However, it is implied that the player is descended from Assassins, thus their motives for secrecy might not be so mysterious.
*The Abstergo Industries facility in which Desmond was initially held, and later escaped from, was located in Italy. During his escape, Desmond saw several signs written in Italian.
*According to sound files found in rifts hidden by Subject 16 in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Abstergo used closed circuit televisions to spy on civillians and video games to distract them. The secret menu is located between channels 172 and 173 and it has the owner's names, credit card number, their likes, EEG, and ARAS. In April 2011, a man named Mr. Jameson found out about this and called Diana of Comstatic. In response, Abstergo sent someone to kill him and his twelve year old son Paul.
*According to Gary, Coke, Kraft, Detroit, Wall Street, and the pharmaceutical industry all have ties to Abstergo.
Marcus Junius Brutus (early June 85 BC – late October 42 BC), often referred to simply as Brutus, was a politician of the late Roman Republic and a member of the Assassin Order. He is best known in modern times for taking a leading role in the assassination conspiracy against Julius Caesar.

History
Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger was the son of Marcus Junius Brutus the Elder and Servilia Caepionis. His father was killed by Pompey the Great in dubious circumstances after he had taken part in the rebellion of Lepidus; his mother was the half-sister of Cato the Younger, and later became Julius Caesar's mistress. Some sources refer to the possibility of Caesar being his real father. Brutus' uncle, Quintus Servilius Caepio adopted him in about 59 BC, and Brutus was known officially for a time as Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus before he reverted to using his birth-name. However, following Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Brutus revived his adoptive name in order to illustrate his links to another famous tyrannicide, Servilius Ahala, from whom he was descended.

Brutus held his uncle in high regard and his political career started when he became an assistant to Cato, during his governorship of Cyprus. During this time, he enriched himself by lending money at high rates of interest. He returned to Rome a rich man, where he married Claudia Pulchra. From his first appearance in the Senate, Brutus aligned with the Optimates (the conservative faction) against the First Triumvirate of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Pompey Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and Gaius Julius Caesar. Around 45 BC, many senators began to fear Caesar's growing power following his appointment as dictator for life. Brutus was persuaded into joining the conspiracy against Caesar by the other senators.

Eventually, Brutus decided to move against Caesar after Caesar's king-like behavior prompted him to take action. His wife was the only woman privy to the plot. The conspirators planned to carry out their plot on the Ides of March (March 15) that same year. On that day, Caesar was delayed going to the Senate because his wife, Calpurnia Pisonis, tried to convince him not to go. The conspirators feared the plot had been found out. Brutus persisted, however, waiting for Caesar at the Senate, and allegedly still chose to remain even when a messenger brought him news that would otherwise have caused him to leave. When Caesar finally did come to the Senate, they attacked him. Publius Servilius Casca Longus was allegedly the first to attack Caesar with a blow to the shoulder, which Caesar blocked. However, upon seeing Brutus was with the conspirators, he covered his face with his toga and resigned himself to his fate. The conspirators attacked in such numbers that they even wounded one another. Brutus is said to have been wounded in the hand.

After the assassination, the Senate passed an amnesty on the assassins. This amnesty was proposed by Caesar's friend and co-consul Marcus Antonius. Nonetheless, uproar among the population caused Brutus and the conspirators to leave Rome. Brutus settled in Crete from 44 to 42 BC, but was later defeated in battle and upon fleeing, committed suicide. His last words were "By all means must we fly; not with our feet, however, but with our hands." Brutus also uttered the well-known verse calling down a curse upon Antonius (Plutarch repeats this from the memoirs of Publius Volumnius): "Forget not, Zeus, the author of these crimes."

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
The dagger he used to assassinate Julius Caesar can be obtained in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood along with his personal armor, which is the most powerful in the game. The armor has 25 health diamonds, the same as the Armor of Altaïr from Assassin's Creed II, and is unlocked by exploring all the ruins in which the Followers of Romulus operate.

Trivia
*At some point before the assassination of Julius Ceaser, Brutus explored the vault hidden beneath what would eventually become the Santa Maria Aracoeli. He would include a drawing of the crypt within his scrolls.
*After Brutus' death, his followers tried to use the Shroud to bring him back, but it didn't work; the Shroud can reanimate a body, but it cannot recreate life.
*In Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, Giovanni Borgia relives some of Brutus' memories just like with his father Perotto Calderon's memories, indicating that Perotto and Giovanni are Brutus' descendants.
The Templars, also known as the Knights Templar during the Middle Ages, are a corporate giant formed during the prehistory. The Templars sought to create a perfect world, although the means by which they sought to do so were questionable. Because of this, they were the sworn enemies of the Assassin Order, who believe that Man should not be controlled by a higher power and are subject to free will, even if it means a flawed humanity. With these contrasting ideologies, the two groups have fought over the course of thousands of years for the control and fate of humanity.
Their system of belief changed greatly upon the discovery of the Pieces of Eden; the realization of the non-existence of God led the Order to become atheistic, although they publicly maintained the pretense of following the Christian ways so as to not lose the support of the Church.

Realizing the power that the Pieces of Eden held over man, the Templars began to seek out the artifacts. In 1191, Robert de Sable, then the Grand Master of the Order, personally sought the fabled Apple of Eden, buried in the catacombs beneath Solomon's Temple. The theft of the piece of Eden by the Order of Assassins brought the two great powers into a sustained conflict with one another, ending with the death of Armand Bouchart in Limassol. Despite this setback, the Order maintained its belief in creating a world of peace through manipulation of the Pieces of Eden.

By their reasoning, with no afterlife or ultimate punishment or reward after death, there was no reason to oblige notions of morality or ethics: the end always justified the means, no matter how heinous those means were. They thought that only this life was important, rather than preparing for a non-existent next life. With so many lower class people kept in line by the promise of an afterlife, and so many upper class men blissfully ignoring such ideals, the Templars vowed to make a better world; one of lasting peace, no matter what the cost.

As time progressed, the Templars interest in the Pieces of Eden became more about seeking the power and domination that the artifacts offered. Their goals changed as they sought to control and unify the entire world using the Pieces of Eden to create a "New World Order".

History
Prehistory
The Templar Order was likely founded by Cain, whose 'mark' was used as the Templars' crest. The Templars quickly became the archenemies of the Assassins, who, as opposed to the Templars, fought to allow the people to retain free will.

Roman era
During the Roman era, the Templars went under the alias "Senatus Populusque Romanus", ruling the Roman Empire. However, their rule was interrupted by the Assassins, who would assassinate high Roman officials, going as far as to assassinate the Emperors, such as Caligula.

During the 1st century, the Templars found out that one of the Pieces of Eden, the Shroud, was in the hands of Jesus Christ. Wanting the Piece for their own purposes, the Templars crucified Christ to gain it.

Middle Ages
Formation as a Knightly Order
During the Middle Ages, the Templars removed themselves from the underground and founded themselves as a Knightly Order, the Knights Templar.

In the 1129 Council of Troyes, the Order was officially recognized by the church, and in 1139, Pope Innocent II granted them diplomatic immunity in all provinces and territories and exemption from taxes. This allowed the faction to grow in numbers, strength and wealth quickly, and as they became a larger force, their responsibilities increased accordingly: the Order's many members were prominent figures in the second crusade.

Third Crusade
This section of the article deals specifically with the Knights Templar faction's activities during the Third Crusade. If you were looking for information on the specific enemy type in Assassin's Creed, see their article under Crusaders.

Founded in Jerusalem in 1129, the Knights Templar sought a world at peace with itself. By 1191, they had come to the realization that such peace could only be maintained through use of the Pieces of Eden, and made it their quest to gather as many as they could. That same year, after the theft of the Apple of Eden by the assassins Malik A-Sayf and Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad from the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of the year, ten Templar leaders from both Crusader and Saracen backgrounds fell to the blades of the assassin Altaïr, who was serving penance for breaking the three tenets during the theft. The deaths included not only the Grand Master of the Order, but also Al Mualim, leader of the Order of Assassins in Syria and the only Templar not willing to share the power of the Apple with his nine brothers.

With their leadership effectively wiped out by a single assassin, the Brotherhood retreated to the island of Cyprus under the command of a new Grand Master, Armand Bouchart. Pursued by Altaïr, the Templars were wiped out once again, although the treasures of the Templar Archive in Limassol were spirited away before they could be found. The death of Armand forced the Order to consider its position carefully, and by 1312 the Order had officially disbanded. In reality, the Order continued to thrive, adopting a much more secretive position in world affairs. That meant retreating into the shadows, as said in Altaïr's fabled Codex.

Renaissance
By the late 15th Century, the Brotherhood had regained a position of strength on the world stage, spreading deep into the Church and nobility of Italy. Under the command of Rodrigo Borgia, the Templars sought to unify northern Italy under their command, and regain the Apple of Eden which they knew to be buried in Cyprus. Targeting Lorenzo de' Medici, the de facto ruler of Florence, the Templars found themselves confronted by the Assassin Giovanni Auditore da Firenze, who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following two near fatal encounters with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons – Federico, Petruccio and Ezio – for the crimes of High Treason against the city of Florence. Corrupting the city official Uberto Alberti, the city guards arrested Giovanni and two of his sons, narrowly missing their chance to capture the third, Ezio, who had been delivering and collecting letters for his father.

Realizing too late the treachery of Uberto Alberti, whom his father had considered a friend, Ezio appeared at the execution of his family, watching in horror as his father and brothers were hanged; he narrowly escaped the same fate himself. Unconcerned with the remaining Auditore, the Templars continued in their mission to assume control of the cities of northern Italy. In 1478, the Templar affiliated House of Pazzi made their push for control. In what would become known as the Pazzi conspiracy, the family struck against the Medici during Mass, killing Giuliano de' Medici and critically wounding Lorenzo, who was saved only by the timely intervention of Ezio Auditore, the son who had been allowed to escape. Lorenzo's survival and the arrival of Ezio spelt doom for the Pazzi family, who were left to their fate by Rodrigo Borgia. Vieri, Francesco and Jacopo de' Pazzi were all slain by the lone assassin whilst the Templars acknowledged their defeat in Florence, instead turning their attention to the city of Venice.

Utilizing the House of Barbarigo, the Templars assumed control of Venice briefly in 1486, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the Piece of Eden from Cyprus. Two years later, in 1488, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with the Apple in hand. Bringing it to Borgia, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more. With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Brotherhood approached the Orsi brothers – Ludovico and Checco – to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar Girolamo Riario – Caterina Sforza. Invading Forlì, the Orsi brothers demanded the map, and the Apple in exchange for the lives of Sforza's children. The brothers were rebuked, and assaulted the Rocca di Ravaldino. Together with the city guards, the Assassins Ezio Auditore and Niccolò Machiavelli held off the assault, although a second succeeded in claiming the Apple briefly.

Despite the loss of the Apple, Rodrigo Borgia was ultimately unfazed, and in 1492 became Pope Alexander VI in order to gain access to the Papal staff, another of the Pieces of Eden. In 1499 Borgia was once again confronted by the assassin Ezio, this time within the Sistine Chapel itself. The Templar's defeat, however, was not permanent, as Rodrigo's son, Cesare Borgia, besieged Monteriggioni to regain the Apple of Eden and attempted to kill Ezio. Four years later Ezio went to the heart of the Templars itself, namely Rome, to strike back at the Templars and retrieve the Apple.

Modern Times
By the 19th century, the Templars gained a significant amount of power and influence within the Russian Empire; with a number of the Tsar, including Alexander II and his son Alexander III, being Templars themselves. In the Tsars' possession; the Staff of Eden, granting the autocratic rulers great power over their citizens. In 1908 however, their control over the Russian Empire was greatly diminished with the destruction of the Staff in Tunguska, thanks in part to the combined efforts of Nikola Tesla and the Assassin Nikolai Orlov.

Infiltrating and establishing countless corporate entities, by the 20th Century the Templars had positioned themselves within several world-defining positions, controlling whole nations and improving the planet's technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stifle world progress however; Adolf Hitler used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started a world-wide conflict. He was "fought" by his Templar contemporaries Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, who under the guise of the Allied nations ultimately won the conflict, despite having planned the war all along, and orchestrating the peace that would follow.

By the early 21st Century, the Templar fronted Abstergo Industries had expanded into a global entity, far larger and more powerful than most companies that had come before it. For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion, believing it to be "too large" a company.

During this time, the Templars had access to a number of Pieces of Eden, however, the actions of the Assassins, coupled with the DIA Satellite Accident forced the Templars into stepping up the Animus-project, in the hope of finding another Piece capable of controlling the minds of humanity. By September of 2012, sixteen test subjects had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth – Desmond Miles, the descendant of both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, and Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

Captured, for seven days Miles was forced to relieve the memories of his ancestor Altaïr in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all Pieces of Eden scattered across the world. With the information they had long sought in hand, the Templars set about gathering the remaining Pieces to ensure "absolute peace", although they soon found themselves in a race against the Assassin Order to obtain the Pieces first. They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on December 21, 2012.
Ordre du Temple in French, the Knights Templar are amongst the most famous of the Western Christian military orders involved in the war. They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christianity, and grew rapidly in membership. Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France deceived Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar, to serve his own agenda. The Order's Knights either fled, were executed, or absorbed into other orders like the Knights Hospitalier. The Portuguese branch changed their names to Knights of Christ.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.
May the Father of Understanding guide us.

Ideals and goals
The military order of the Templars was founded publicly in 1129 to counter the greatly increasing threat against the Holy Land by the Saracens, and to protect the city of Jerusalem. Over time, the Templars began to believe it within their power to unite the world in peace.

Templar groups
There are groups who act as unofficial divisions of the Templars, unrelated to them publicly, but in fact commanded by Templars (some of them through the membership of their leaders and others are part of the Templar Order itself).

Ideals and goals
The military order of the Templars was founded publicly in 1129 to counter the greatly increasing threat against the Holy Land by the Saracens, and to protect the city of Jerusalem. Over time, the Templars began to believe it within their power to unite the world in peace.

Templar groups
There are groups who act as unofficial divisions of the Templars, unrelated to them publicly, but in fact commanded by Templars (some of them through the membership of their leaders and others are part of the Templar Order itself).
The Historical Templars

Cesare Borgia (13 September 1475 - 12 March 1507) was the son of Rodrigo Borgia and an arch-nemesis of Ezio Auditore. Like his father, he was a member of the Templar Order. Eventually, he became the commander of the Papal army and a leader in the Templar Order.

Biography
Early life
Cesare Borgia was born in Rome in 1475, to Rodrigo Borgia, the Grand Master of the Templar Order, and his long-term mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei. He was one of Lucrezia Borgia's brothers.

Becoming a Templar leader
In 1496, when his father waged war with the Orsini Family to seize their territory, Cesare joined the battle. Among the enemy's ranks was Bartolomeo d'Alviano, in secret an Assassin. When Bartolomeo's resources were down to three fortresses, Cesare cut off his supplies. When it looked like victory was near, Carlo Orsini arrived with his army and joined Bartolomeo, even wounding Cesare in the face.

His father placed the fate of the Templars in his brother Giovanni's hands. Cesare, angry at being spurned by his father and lusting for power, killed his own brother in 1497.

Siege of Monteriggioni
In 1499, Cesare, who had been brought up in the Templar ways, lead an assault on Monteriggioni, headquarters of the Assassins in Italy in order to eliminate the Master Assassin Ezio Auditore. Besieging the city, Cesare's forces overwhelmed the city's defenders and handed to him Mario Auditore and Caterina Sforza. Standing at the city gates, the Apple of Eden in his hand, Cesare 'invited' Ezio to come and face him in Rome with a shot of his firearm that killed Mario. Ezio was then shot down and wounded by a team of arquebusiers and the battle was won. With Monteriggioni in ruins, Cesare returned to Rome with his prize.

War in Rome
By 1500, Cesare had Rome under his iron fist, as he was commander of the Papal army, though it appeared that he and his father sometimes disagreed on his choices. He used Borgia towers to keep control over the five districts of Rome. In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci was forced into service for the Borgia against his will. Cesare made Leonardo build the armored tank and another flying machine, not to mention "other monstrosities besides", but all of Leonardo's creations were stolen and destroyed by Ezio Auditore, in secret at Leonardo's own behest. In 1503, Cesare and his father Rodrigo paraded through Rome in the Papal parade, but were ambushed by Ezio and his apprentices.

Siege of Viana and death
In 1507, Cesare travelled to Viana, Spain to try and commandeer the King of Navarre (John III's), vast army, only to die during the siege against the castle, and he would be buried there. In a recent trailer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Cesare faces off against Ezio Auditore on the rampart's of the castle wall. For a brief moment the two stare each other down until a cannonball crashes into the wall and Ezio springs into action, emerging from the smoke and dirt, rushing at Cesare with his hidden blade equipped. Cesare quickly drops his sword and attempts to grab Ezio's arm as the trailer fades out.

Trivia
*Historically, it is said that Niccolò Machiavelli greatly admired Cesare. However, in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Machiavelli seeks to eliminate Cesare and his family members alongside Ezio Auditore.
*Cesare's comments about bloodshed and the need for cleansing may highlight the origin of the name Abstergo being adopted by the Templars, which is Latin for "I cleanse".
*It has been confirmed from the Brotherhood storyline trailer that the Siege of Viana will appear in the game.
*Cesare shows some respect towards Ezio as seen in the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - The Story Trailer.
*There are some differences between the released versions of Ezio and Cesare's (believed to be) final confrontion, as in the Dev. Diary, Cesare stops Ezio's attack while in Altair's armor in the middle of the battlefied. Though in the Story Trailer, they are on a wall with Ezio's normal robes and he tries to kill Cesare with his right Hidden Blade, and in another recent screenshot Ezio is seen charging towards Cesare with his Hidden Blade, while Cesare has a pistol pointed towards him with his sword at the ready.
*Cesare's relationship with his father is somewhat strange. At times, Rodrigo strongly disagrees with his son's actions and his taste for power, while Cesare can become very agressive towards Rodrigo, once going as far as shouting "If I want to live, I Iive. If I want to take, I take! If I want you to die, you die!" and then attacking him.
Girolamo Riario (1443 - 14 April 1488) was Lord of Forlì and husband of Caterina Sforza. He was the father of Bianca and Ottaviano Riario.

Biography
Girolamo Riario was working with the Templars, making a map of the Codex pages scattered all throughout Italy. For this (and for other personal reasons), his own wife Caterina Sforza hired the Orsi brothers to kill him.

Personality and characteristics
According to his wife Caterina, he was a "lousy father" and "boring in bed". We can only see him in the database entry of the Orsi brothers while never shown in-game, being only referred to.
Trivia
*In real history, he was one of the Pazzi conspirators against Lorenzo de' Medici, but he has not been identified as this in the game yet (though he works with the Templars).
*Gamewise, he seems to be an enemy of Lorenzo de' Medici as some of Romagna's Assassination Contracts involve killing his soldiers and agents.
*Aside from the Database entry about the Orsi Brothers, Girolamo Riario can be seen in the game (albeit from the back). When Ezio and Leonardo are discussing Caterina, she and her husband can be seen arguing in the background; Leonardo even points him out during their conversation.
May the Father of Understanding guide us.
The Knights Templar -- or Brotherhood as they called themselves -- are a religious military order-turned corporate giant during the second and third millennium A.D. Founded during BCE, the Knights Templar sought to create a perfect world, although the means by which they sought to do so were questionable. Sworn enemies of the Order of Assassins, the Templars suffered a crippling blow during the Third Crusade, largely due to the work of the Assassin Altaïr, but survived.

Adopting a less public position, the Knights Templar retreated into the shadows and thrived, continuing their war against the Assassins throughout the Renaissance, and into the Modern era.

Ideals and goals
The military order of the Knights Templar was founded publicly in 1129 to counter the increasing threat against the Holy Land by the Saracens, and to protect the city of Jerusalem. Over time, the Templars began to believe it within their power to unite the world in peace.
Their system of belief changed greatly upon the discovery of the Pieces of Eden; the realization of the non-existence of God led Order to become atheistic, although they publicly maintained the pretence of following the Christian ways so as to not lose the support of the Church.

Realizing the power that the Pieces of Eden held over man, the Knights Templar began to seek out the artifacts. In 1191 Robert de Sable, then the Grand Master of the Order, personally sought the fabled Apple of Eden, buried in the catacombs beneath Solomon's Temple. The theft of the piece of Eden by the Order of Assassins brought the two great powers into a sustained conflict with one another, ending with the death of Armand Bouchart in Limassol. Despite this setback, the Order maintained its belief in creating a world of peace through manipulation of the Pieces of Eden.

By their reasoning, with no afterlife or ultimate punishment or reward after death, there was no reason to oblige notions of morality or ethics; the end always justified the means, no matter how heinous. They thought that only this life was important, rather than preparing for a non-existent next life. With so many lower class people kept in line by the promise of an afterlife, and so many upper class men blissfully ignoring such ideals, the Templars vowed to make a better world; one of lasting peace, no matter the cost.

As time progressed, the Templars' interest in the Pieces of Eden became more about seeking the power and domination that the artifacts offered. Their goals changed as they sought to control and unify the entire world using the Pieces of Eden to create a "New World Order".

History
Pre-Crusades
Little is known of the Templars as a whole before their 'official' founding in 1129, though according to Subject 16 they did indeed exist for some time beforehand, and indeed adopted their emblem from their Order's "father" &ndash; Cain. Xerxes, Alexander the Great and Qin Shi Huang, as well as Cleopatra and Caligula were all implied to have belonged to this faction of proto-Templars, but some or all of these could very well have just been simple tyrants with no affiliation to whatever form the Templar Order took before its official founding. The Templars may have merely been known as "The Brotherhood," until they officially began an organized group as the Knights Templar.

Third Crusade
Founded in Jerusalem in 1129, the Knights Templar sought a world at peace with itself. By 1191, they had come to the realization that such peace could only be maintained through use of the Pieces of Eden, and made it their quest to gather as many as they could. That same year, after the theft of the Apple of Eden by the assassins Malik A-Sayf and Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad from the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of the year, ten Templar leaders from both Crusader and Saracen backgrounds fell to the blades of the assassin Altaïr, who was serving penance for crimes committed during the theft.

Under the command of Rodrigo Borgia, the Knights Templar sought to unify northern Italy under their command, and regain the Apple of Eden which they knew to be buried in Cyprus. Targeting Lorenzo de' Medici, the de facto ruler of Florence, the Templars found themselves confronted by the assassin Giovanni Auditore da Firenze, who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following a near fatal encounter with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons &ndash; Federico, Petruccio and Ezio &ndash; for the crimes of High Treason against the city of Florence. Corrupting the city official Uberto Alberti, the city guards arrested Giovanni and two of his sons, narrowly missing their chance to capture the third, Ezio, who had been delivering and collecting letters for his father.

Realizing too late, the treachery of Uberto Alberti, whom his father had considered a friend, Ezio appeared at the execution of his family, watching in horror as his father and brothers were hanged; he narrowly escaped such a fate himself. Unconcerned with the remaining Auditore, the Templars continued in their mission to assume control of the cities of northern Italy. In 1478, the Templar affiliated House of Pazzi made their push for control. In what would become known as the Pazzi conspiracy, the family struck against the Medici during Mass, killing Giuliano de' Medici and fatally wounding Lorenzo, who was saved only by the timely intervention of Ezio Auditore, the son who had been allowed to escape. Lorenzo's survival and the arrival of Ezio spelt doom for the Pazzi family, who were left to their fate by Rodrigo Borgia. Vieri, Francesco and Jacopo de' Pazzi were all slain by the lone assassin whilst the Templars acknowledged their defeat in Florence, instead turning the attention to the city of Venice.

Utilising the House of Barbarigo, the Brotherhood assumed control of Venice briefly in 1485, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the piece of Eden from Cyprus. Two years later, in 1487, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with the Apple in hand. Bringing it to Borgia, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more. With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Brotherhood approached the Orsi brothers &ndash; Ludovico and Checco &ndash; to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar Girolamo Riario &ndash; Caterina Sforza.

The Templar's defeat was not permanent, as Rodrigo Borgia's son, Cesare Borgia, besieged Monteriggioni to gain the Apple of Eden and attempted to kill Ezio. Four years later Ezio went to the heart of the Templars itself, namely Rome, to strike back at the Templars and retrieve the Apple.

Modern era
Despite their many defeats at the hands of the assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the Templar order continued to exist within the shadows. Infiltrating or starting up countless corporate entities, the Templars positioned its members in several world-defining positions, improving the planets technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stiffle world progress however; Adolf Hitler used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started a world-wide conflict. He was "fought" by his Templar counterparts Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, who ultimately won the conflict though it appears that FDR was an assassin.

By the early 21st Century, the Templar fronted Abstergo Industries had expanded into a global entity, far larger and more powerful than most companies that had come before it. For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion.

At this time, Abstergo Industries seemingly lacked a Piece of Eden capable of controlling the minds of humanity, and as such authorised the Animus-project in order to gain access to the memories of those who might know the location of one. By September of 2012, sixteen test subjects had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth &ndash; Desmond Miles, the descendant of both Altaïr, and Ezio Auditore.

Captured, for seven days Miles was forced to relieve the memories of his ancestor Altaïr in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all Pieces of Eden scattered across the world. With the info in hand, the Templars started gathering the remaining intact pieces to ensure "absolute peace". They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on December 21, 2012. . It should also be noted that they altered public records of history numerous times, which can explain inconsistencies with historical dates and in-game events.

Members
Originally crusaders of unprecedented skill, as time progressed, they began to act secretly, utilizing powerful and influential people to further their cause. Often, these people are lured to being Templars by the promise of power and glory.
Templar Groups
There are groups who act as unofficial divisions of the Templars, unrelated to them publicly, but in fact commanded by Templars (some of them through the membership of their leaders and others are part of the Templar Order itself).

Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France deceived Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar. The Order`s Knights either fled, were executed, or absorbed into other orders like the Knights Hospitalier. The Portuguese branch changed their names to Knights of Christ.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.

The Bonfire of the Vanities was an event centred in Florence, in the year 1498, instigated by the Italian Dominican priest Girolamo Savonarola; who believed that the Renaissance idea had corrupted Italy, and preached for a return to medieval life. Savonarola, after acquiring the Apple of Eden from a wounded Ezio Auditore, gained control of the city of Florence following the expulsion of the Medici using the Apple.

In the year 1498, Ezio once again returned to the city to find it in the grip of Savonarola and his lieutenants. Meeting with Niccolò Machiavelli on one of the Arno bridges, the two passed into the Oltrarno district of Florence and discovered the bodies of a contingent of soldiers bearing the mark of Rodrigo Borgia. Learning that the Apple only held sway over the minds of Savonarola's nine lieutenants, whilst the city's populous were controlled by fear, Ezio decided to assassinate the nine, whilst La Volpe and Paola brought the people of the city to Savonarola’s door.

After killing Savonarola’s nine lieutenants, the city was liberated and Savonarola trapped by the rioting crowd. Watching as Savonarola tried to use the Apple on the people themselves, Ezio disarmed the priest and let the citizens carry him away. The Apple in hand, the assassins followed the crowd to the Piazza della Signoria, where a pyre stood ready to burn Savonarola alive. Ezio, deciding that no one deserved to die in such a way, killed the Dominican priest with his hidden blade before the flames could reach him. Revealing himself to the crowd, Ezio made a speech, telling them to follow their own path.

Final Words
Ezio Auditore: Nothing is true. Non è un compito facile il mio (This is not an easy thing I do)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Ezio Auditore: You wear a Noble's clothes. How is it Savonarola charmed you?

Condottiero: Wealth and power do not ensure contentment. I wanted even more...

Ezio Auditore: And now, instead, you have nothing. Questo non è che un atto dovuto (This is something that must be done)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Lieutenant 4 (The Merchant)

Merchant: What... What have I done...

Ezio Auditore: You tried to force devotion.

Merchant: Sometimes the people must be told what to think.

Ezio Auditore: No good has ever come of that. Benché il mio cuore sia turbato, la mia mente è lucida (Though my heart may be tormented, my head is clear)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Lieutenant 5 (The Farmer)

Ezio Auditore: You would have let your own people starve! And for what?

Farmer: Too long I suffered their insults. They called me simple and low-class... I wanted their respect.

Ezio Auditore: I'm afraid you do not have mine. Per quanto sia penoso il trapasso, lieto sarà il tuo sonno (Though the passing may be painful, it will be a gentle sleep)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Lieutenant 6 (The Noble)

Noble: I was a victim! It's not my fault!

Ezio Auditore: No. You made a choice.

Noble: He charmed me. With that... thing.

Ezio Auditore: Only because you allowed it. Lo faccio per il popolo (I do this for the people)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Lieutenant 7 (The Priest)

Priest: I thought he preached the word of God.

Ezio Auditore: I fear his sermon is a lie.

Priest: I led my flock astray... It's just... I wanted so badly to believe...

Ezio Auditore: We all do. Vedrò compiuta l’opera di mio padre (I will see my father’s work complete)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Lieutenant 8 (The Guard Captain)

Captain: Is this truly who I was? So proud and cruel...

Ezio Auditore: No. Savonarola bewitched you.

Captain: Did he? Or was it that I tasted power and found myself intoxicated. I wish I had been stronger.

Ezio Auditore: As do I. Mi rincresce, ma non c’è altro modo (I am truly sorry, but there is no other way). Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Lieutenant 9 (The Doctor)

Doctor: You have spilled the blood of a healer.

Ezio Auditore: No. I have spilled the blood of a tyrant.

Doctor: To command such power over the body, between this world and the next. It seems, I grew intoxicated.

Ezio Auditore: And now you grow still. La tua morte non sarà inutile (Your death will serve a purpose)... Requiescat in pace (Rest in peace).

Trivia
*This is the second of two DLC's that came out. They are Sequences 12 and 13 (this one being 13).
*Through the whole of this Sequence you will come across many battles between Borgia's and Savonarola's guards. If you decide to participate, they will fight each other and you.
*After meeting with Machiavelli during the sequence, go to the Palazzo Auditore courtyard and Ezio will see a vision of his family members with Eagle Vision.
*This DLC can be downloaded with or without the secret Templar locations. These locations feature the Palazzo Medici in Florence, the Santa Maria Dei Frari and the Arsenal Shipyard located in Venice.
*'Bonfire of the Vanities' bears some resemblance to the original "Assassin's Creed", as Ezio has to kill 9 lieutenants before killing their master, Savonarola. This is similar to how Altaïr assassinated 9 Templars before killing Al Mualim. In addition, the methods used by Savonarola, the burning of all books, art, etc., bear a strong resemblance to the actions of one of said Templars, Jubair al Hakim.
*If you don't do anything when Savonarola attempts to use the apple on the people, Machiavelli will be the one who will throw the knife that disarms Savonarola.
*The Nine Targets you assassinate before Savonarola all do share some similarities with the targets in Assassin's Creed:
#The Artist - Jubair al Hakim: Both are culturally enligthened men who burn the products of their craft.
#The Captain of the Guard - Robert de Sable: Both are military leaders, and you must fight there men to reach them.
#The Nobleman - Talal: Both run from you instead of fighting.
#The Priest - Tamir: Both targets can easily be assassinated without alerting the guards (In the Priest's case, you fail if you do cause a disturbance)
#The Merchant - Sibrand: Both men are assassinated on a ship.
#The Doctor - Garnier de Naplouse: Both of them are corrupt doctors and both are assassinated in there quarters.
#The Farmer - Abu'l Nuqoud: Both are large men who want revenge against those who mocked them.
#The Mercenary - William of Montferrat: Both have a host of trained fighters and believe that might makes right.
#The Preacher - Majd Addin: Both are fanatics that believe in the Templar's goals and use fear and intimidation to control (or enlighten) the populace.
