[[Subject 16]] also references quotes from the Church of [[Jesus Christ]] of Latter Day Saints' "Pearl of Great Price" scripture. The semi hidden message "Templar texts adapted by Mr. Smith" written in Morse code in a glyph sequence (Mr. Smith being an allusion to Joseph Smith, the eighteenth-century preacher who founded the LDS Church), implying that the Mormon or LDS version of Cain and Abel is more accurate, or at the very least, an accurate reflection of the Templars version of events. The relatively unique title of "Master Mahan" is mentioned as the title Cain gave himself, for being the master of the great secret. The term "Mahan" is of uncertain meaning, though possibly based on the Hebrew word ''maha'', meaning "to destroy." This title does not seem to occur in other versions of the story.

They are the employers of [[Warren Vidic|Dr. Warren Vidic]] and (formerly) [[Lucy Stillman]], the group that organized [[Desmond]]'s capture, and the company that funds the [[Animus]] project.

Even though Abstergo is outwardly labeled as a company working in the fields of medicine and science, Dr. Vidic boasts of their accomplishments in fields beyond these. He claims that either Abstergo or its predecessors were responsible for every scientific accomplishment and involved in every mass progressive movement over the past millenium, though Abstergo chooses who gets credit for the accomplishments very carefully. However, these achievements are not purely of their own doing, as when Desmond asks who created the Animus' technology, Dr. Vidic cryptically replies with "[[Those Who Came Before]]."

Desmond discovers Abstergo's identity as the [[Modern Times|modern-day]] embodiment of the Knights Templar while being held at their [[Abstergo laboratory|laboratory]]. He does so after reading several [[E-mails|e-mails]], particularly one viewable in the conference room, wherein [[Alan Rikkin]] writes to Vidic: "May the [[Father of Understanding]] guide you to success," a phrase long used by the Templar Order.

Abstergo has also been hunting the last of the [[Assassins]] left in the world, hoping to end their enemies' way of life, thus eliminating any chance of their own failure. Vidic's e-mail reveals Abstergo and Assassin presence in many events throughout history, such as the [[Tunguska event]]. The emails also discuss the [[Philadelphia Project]], in which the ''USS Eldridge'' (which was stationed in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard) was allegedly rendered invisible for several seconds, and sent forward in time. Experiments with the [[Piece of Eden|artifact]] related to this incident were halted, with Abstergo citing concern about paradoxes.

Mitchell-Hedge's communicators are also mentioned, along with an abstract reference to the 13 Incan Crystal Skulls that were supposedly discovered by the gentleman adventurer of the same name in the 1920's. New Age theorists state that the Crystal Skulls enable telepathy between their wielders, and therefore, the term "communicators" implies that Abstergo either has these skulls or is able to communicate using them. This communication is likely also undetectable by any modern-day Assassin.

Through the e-mails, we learn that Abstergo is being investigated for something called "New Fluoride," which they tested on an isolated community, were caught, and are currently being held in suspicion because of it. This is the reason behind the December 21, 2012 launch of their Eye-Abstergo communications satellite, as afterwards, they risk being immobilized by having their assets frozen. The 12/21/2012 launch is also significant, as it marks the end of the Mayan Long Count, 13th ''baktun'' cycle - the date set by many to be the end of the world.

Abstergo was also involved in an accident under the Denver International Airport, at Abstergo's satellite manufacturing (and possibly launch) facility. E-mails show that a member of the project apparently went insane, using the [[Pieces of Eden|Apple]] present to kill almost everyone at the facility, ultimately destroying himself and the Piece. This loss caused Abstergo to capture Desmond Miles, in order to search for a replacement Piece.

Vidic mentions that Abstergo invents everything to enhance everyday life, and it is also stated by Lucy that they produce anti-depressants. [[Henry Ford]] and [[Thomas Edison]] were past Abstergo employees, making Abstergo responsible for popularizing the assembly line and electricity. During World War II, the Atomic Bomb's creation was directly linked to Abstergo, with "O" ([[J. Robert Oppenheimer]]) being given the go ahead by an unnamed Abstergo employee.

On July 22, 1944, an unknown member of the company sent out a memo to fellow members. They mentioned using the assembly line to control both capitalists and workers, and credited Ransom "Ranny" Olds and Henry Ford for its creation. <ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref> This person further added that they hoped that in the future, the company would not have to use such "ugly chains". They mention that Abstergo's founders designed the "Plan" in 1910. This individual also brought up the Communists and said it was Abstergo's duty to save them (neutralize) and their followers. The reasons given were that they were to be allowed to eat and to reproduce.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/> The sender of the memo further elaborates on Abstergo's goals, stating to his fellow Templars that their duty was to "shepherd those beneath us through life, even if force is required". The unknown member mentioned other Templars known only by the initials "H." and "S." (Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin) who brought on the "turmoil and fear". Towards the end of this memo, they brought up the "successful ruse of Rockefeller's dimes". <ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/> This information was hidden by [[Subject 16]] for Desmond Miles to find.

Abstergo was responsible for British mathematician [[Alan Turing]]'s criminal prosecution and possibly his death.In a phone recording dating to June 1954, also hidden by Subject 16, two Templars only known by the initials "V." and "N." mention the need for Turing to be arrested. They feared "mass unemployment" if the mathematician did ended up creating a computer.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/> The two men also mentioned American economist and senior U.S.A. Treasury Department official Harry Dexter White.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

In the 1970s, Abstergo involved itself in the economic and political affairs of Iran, Argentina, and Chile. This information was also revealed to Desmond by Subject 16 via a company memo hidden in a glyph. This memo on the subject of South America stated that "to ensure company's success, company agents must be able to move freely from country to country and maintain power within all of them. A global international order must be implemented".

In Argentina, the memo tells members to inform capitalists that if they helped ensure that the junta (likely referencing The National Reorganization Process) stays in power Abstergo will pass all their corporate debt onto the Argentine people, thus quelling any attempts of popular revolt. The person who wrote the memo also added that they wanted trade unions there to be destroyed. The actions of Abstergo likely contributed to the disappearance of at least 30,000 Argentinian people in the 1970s <ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>.

In neighboring Chile, Abstergo wanted the free markets to proceed. The memo mentioned a Templar known as F., most likely Fidel Castro, who visited the country last year, thus helping things along. The memo went on to state that all public companies need to be sold to the private sector, preferably at a cheap price.The price of bread and other staples must rise, therefore ensuring that the Chilean people remain in poverty and being unable to resist. Abstergo's efforts ended up thwarting President Salvador Allende's efforts to allow the people to own Chile's corporations, which ended with his apparent suicide in 1973. This helped future dictator Augusto Pinochet to assume power. Abstergo escaped detection because it deliberately hid its involvement and implicated the U.S. government <ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>.

In Iran, Abstergo backed monarch Shah Pahlavi, Shaban Jafari, and the National Intelligence and Security Organization, otherwise known as SAVAK, against democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh.This resulted in Mosaddegh being overthrown in 1953 and dying under house arrest in 1967. <ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

In September 1985, the research division of Abstergo worked on a prototype capable of mimicking POE capabilities across a network. They also started testing on Subject 4.

In November 2004, a member of the CIA named Gary found out about Abstergo. He mentioned to a woman, likely his wife, that Abstergo has holdings in numerous companies (Kraft, Coke etc.) and that Abstergo has interests in all companies over a certain size. He was going to publish a book on the company, but was presumably thwarted by the Templars.

Justice of the Supreme Court and templar [[Antonin Scalia]] convinced Sandra O' Connor to retire. He sent a letter to "S.". Scalia mentioned that W. (George W. Bush) will restart animosities with Iraq, giving C.'s (Dick Cheney) contractors more work. After the destruction of the Campaign finance laws, the company would be free to elect anyone they choose to the Senate, House, and eventually the Presidency.

In January 2012, the head of the company left it to an unknown person. He warned his successor of a crisis, that once the free market falls, the people will turn against them.

Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger was the son of Marcus Junius Brutus the Elder and Servilia Caepionis. His father was killed by Pompey the Great in dubious circumstances after he had taken part in the rebellion of Lepidus; his mother was the half-sister of Cato the Younger, and later became Julius Caesar's mistress. Some sources refer to the possibility of Caesar being his real father. Brutus' uncle, Quintus Servilius Caepio adopted him in about 59 BC, and Brutus was known officially for a time as '''Quintus Servilius Caepio Brutus''' before he reverted to using his birth-name. However, following Caesar's assassination in 44 BC, Brutus revived his adoptive name in order to illustrate his links to another famous tyrannicide, Servilius Ahala, from whom he was descended.

Brutus held his uncle in high regard and his political career started when he became an assistant to Cato, during his governorship of Cyprus. During this time, he enriched himself by lending money at high rates of interest. He returned to Rome a rich man, where he married Claudia Pulchra. From his first appearance in the Senate, Brutus aligned with the Optimates (the conservative faction) against the First Triumvirate of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Pompey Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus and Gaius Julius Caesar. Around 45 BC, many senators began to fear Caesar's growing power following his appointment as dictator for life. Brutus was persuaded into joining the conspiracy against Caesar by the other senators.

Eventually, Brutus decided to move against Caesar after Caesar's king-like behavior prompted him to take action. His wife was the only woman privy to the plot. The conspirators planned to carry out their plot on the Ides of March (March 15) that same year. On that day, Caesar was delayed going to the Senate because his wife, Calpurnia Pisonis, tried to convince him not to go. The conspirators feared the plot had been found out. Brutus persisted, however, waiting for Caesar at the Senate, and allegedly still chose to remain even when a messenger brought him news that would otherwise have caused him to leave. When Caesar finally did come to the Senate, they attacked him. Publius Servilius Casca Longus was allegedly the first to attack Caesar with a blow to the shoulder, which Caesar blocked. However, upon seeing Brutus was with the conspirators, he covered his face with his toga and resigned himself to his fate. The conspirators attacked in such numbers that they even wounded one another. Brutus is said to have been wounded in the hand.

After the assassination, the Senate passed an amnesty on the assassins. This amnesty was proposed by Caesar's friend and co-consul [[wikipedia:Marcus Antonius|Marcus Antonius]]. Nonetheless, uproar among the population caused Brutus and the conspirators to leave Rome. Brutus settled in Crete from 44 to 42 BC, but was later defeated in battle and upon fleeing, committed suicide. His last words were ''"By all means must we fly; not with our feet, however, but with our hands."'' Brutus also uttered the well-known verse calling down a curse upon Antonius (Plutarch repeats this from the memoirs of Publius Volumnius): ''"Forget not, Zeus, the author of these crimes."''

Founded in [[Jerusalem]] in 1129, the Knights Templar sought a world at peace with itself. By 1191, they had come to the realization that such peace could only be maintained through use of the [[Pieces of Eden]], and made it their quest to gather as many as they could.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> That same year, after the theft of the Apple of Eden by the assassins [[Malik A-Sayf]] and [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] from the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of the year, ten Templar leaders from both [[Crusader]] and [[Saracen]] backgrounds fell to the blades of the assassin Altaïr, who was serving penance for breaking the three tenets during the theft. The deaths included not only the Grand Master of the Order, but also [[Al Mualim]], leader of the Order of Assassins in Syria and the only Templar not willing to share the power of the Apple with his nine brothers.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

Under the command of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars sought to unify northern Italy under their command, and regain the Apple of Eden which they knew to be buried in Cyprus.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> Targeting [[Lorenzo de' Medici]], the de facto ruler of [[Florence]], the Templars found themselves confronted by the Assassin [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following two near fatal encounters with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons – [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], [[Petruccio Auditore|Petruccio]] and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]] – for the crimes of High Treason against the city of Florence. Corrupting the city official [[Uberto Alberti]], the city guards arrested Giovanni and two of his sons, narrowly missing their chance to capture the third, Ezio, who had been delivering and collecting letters for his father.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Utilizing the [[House of Barbarigo]], the Templars assumed control of Venice briefly in 1486, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the Piece of Eden from [[Cyprus]]. Two years later, in 1488, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with the Apple in hand. Bringing it to Borgia, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Brotherhood approached the [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] [[House of Orsi|brothers]] – [[Ludovico Orsi|Ludovico]] and [[Checco Orsi|Checco]] – to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar [[Girolamo Riario]] – [[Caterina Sforza]]. Infiltrating and establishing countless corporate entities, by the 20th Century the Templars had positioned themselves within several world-defining positions, controlling whole nations and improving the planet's technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stifle world progress however; [[Adolf Hitler]] used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started [[wikipedia:World War II|a world-wide conflict]]. He was "fought" by his Templar contemporaries [[Winston Churchill]], [[Joseph Stalin]], and [[Franklin D. Roosevelt]], who under the guise of the Allied nations ultimately won the conflict, despite having planned the war all along, and orchestrating the peace that would follow.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

By the early [[Timeline|21st Century]], the Templar fronted [[Abstergo Industries]] had expanded into a global entity, far larger and more powerful than most companies that had come before it.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion,<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> believing it to be "too large" a company.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

During this time, the Templars had access to a number of Pieces of Eden, however, the actions of the Assassins, coupled with the [[DIA Satellite Accident]] forced the Templars into stepping up the [[Animus]]-project, in the hope of finding another Piece capable of controlling the minds of humanity. By September of 2012, sixteen test subjects had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth – [[Desmond Miles]], the descendant of both [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/><ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Captured, for seven days Miles was forced to relieve the memories of his ancestor Altaïr in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all Pieces of Eden scattered across the world. With the information they had long sought in hand, the Templars set about gathering the remaining Pieces to ensure "absolute peace", although they soon found themselves in a race against the Assassin Order to obtain the Pieces first.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on [[Cryptic Messages|December 21, 2012]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christianity, and grew rapidly in membership. Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France deceived Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar, to serve his own agenda. The Order's Knights either fled, were executed, or absorbed into other orders like the [[Knights Hospitalier]]. The Portuguese branch changed their names to Knights of Christ.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.

The '''Templars''', also known as the '''Knights Templar''' during the Middle Ages, are a corporate giant formed during the prehistory. The Templars sought to create a perfect world, although the means by which they sought to do so were questionable. This allowed the faction to grow in numbers, strength and wealth quickly, and as they became a larger force, their responsibilities increased accordingly: the Order's many members were prominent figures in the second crusade.

Founded in [[Jerusalem]] in 1129, the Knights Templar sought a world at peace with itself. By 1191, they had come to the realization that such peace could only be maintained through use of the [[Pieces of Eden]], and made it their quest to gather as many as they could.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> That same year, after the theft of the Apple of Eden by the assassins [[Malik A-Sayf]] and [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] from the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of the year, ten Templar leaders from both [[Crusader]] and [[Saracen]] backgrounds fell to the blades of the assassin Altaïr, who was serving penance for breaking the three tenets during the theft. The deaths included not only the Grand Master of the Order, but also [[Al Mualim]], leader of the Order of Assassins in Syria and the only Templar not willing to share the power of the Apple with his nine brothers.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

With their leadership effectively wiped out by a single assassin, the Brotherhood retreated to the island of [[Cyprus]] under the command of a new Grand Master, [[Armand Bouchart]]. By the late 15th Century, the Brotherhood had regained a position of strength on the world stage, spreading deep into the Church and nobility of [[Italy]]. Under the command of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars sought to unify northern Italy under their command, and regain the Apple of Eden which they knew to be buried in Cyprus.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> Targeting [[Lorenzo de' Medici]], the de facto ruler of [[Florence]], the Templars found themselves confronted by the Assassin [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following two near fatal encounters with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons – [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], [[Petruccio Auditore|Petruccio]] and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]] – for the crimes of High Treason against the city of Florence. Corrupting the city official [[Uberto Alberti]], the city guards arrested Giovanni and two of his sons, narrowly missing their chance to capture the third, Ezio, who had been delivering and collecting letters for his father.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Realizing too late the treachery of Uberto Alberti, whom his father had considered a friend,<ref name="Assassin's Creed:Lineage">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref> Ezio appeared at the execution of his family, watching in horror as his father and brothers were hanged; he narrowly escaped the same fate himself. Unconcerned with the remaining Auditore, the Templars continued in their mission to assume control of the cities of northern Italy. In what would become known as the [[Pazzi conspiracy]], the family struck against the Medici during Mass, killing [[Giuliano de' Medici]] and critically wounding Lorenzo, who was saved only by the timely intervention of Ezio Auditore, the son who had been allowed to escape. Lorenzo's survival and the arrival of Ezio spelt doom for the Pazzi family, who were left to their fate by Rodrigo Borgia. [[Vieri de' Pazzi|Vieri]], [[Francesco de' Pazzi|Francesco]] and [[Jacopo de' Pazzi]] were all slain by the lone assassin whilst the Templars acknowledged their defeat in Florence, instead turning their attention to the city of [[Venice]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Utilizing the [[House of Barbarigo]], the Templars assumed control of Venice briefly in 1486, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the Piece of Eden from [[Cyprus]]. Two years later, in 1488, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with the Apple in hand. Bringing it to Borgia, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Brotherhood approached the [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] [[House of Orsi|brothers]] – [[Ludovico Orsi|Ludovico]] and [[Checco Orsi|Checco]] – to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar [[Girolamo Riario]] – [[Caterina Sforza]]. Invading [[Forlì]], the Orsi brothers demanded the map, and the Apple in exchange for the lives of Sforza's children. The brothers were rebuked, and assaulted the [[Rocca di Ravaldino]]. In 1499 Borgia was once again confronted by the assassin Ezio, this time within the [[Sistine Chapel]] itself.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> The Templar's defeat, however, was not permanent, as Rodrigo's son, [[Cesare Borgia]], besieged Monteriggioni to regain the Apple of Eden and attempted to kill Ezio. Infiltrating and establishing countless corporate entities, by the 20th Century the Templars had positioned themselves within several world-defining positions, controlling whole nations and improving the planet's technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stifle world progress however; [[Adolf Hitler]] used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started [[wikipedia:World War II|a world-wide conflict]]. He was "fought" by his Templar contemporaries [[Winston Churchill]], [[Joseph Stalin]], and [[Franklin D. Roosevelt]], who under the guise of the Allied nations ultimately won the conflict, despite having planned the war all along, and orchestrating the peace that would follow.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

By the early [[Timeline|21st Century]], the Templar fronted [[Abstergo Industries]] had expanded into a global entity, far larger and more powerful than most companies that had come before it.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion,<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> believing it to be "too large" a company.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

During this time, the Templars had access to a number of Pieces of Eden, however, the actions of the Assassins, coupled with the [[DIA Satellite Accident]] forced the Templars into stepping up the [[Animus]]-project, in the hope of finding another Piece capable of controlling the minds of humanity. By September of 2012, sixteen test subjects had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth – [[Desmond Miles]], the descendant of both [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/><ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Captured, for seven days Miles was forced to relieve the memories of his ancestor Altaïr in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all Pieces of Eden scattered across the world. With the information they had long sought in hand, the Templars set about gathering the remaining Pieces to ensure "absolute peace", although they soon found themselves in a race against the Assassin Order to obtain the Pieces first.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on [[Cryptic Messages|December 21, 2012]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

''Ordre du Temple'' in French, the Knights Templar are amongst the most famous of the Western Christian military orders involved in the war. They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christianity, and grew rapidly in membership. Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France deceived Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar, to serve his own agenda. The Order's Knights either fled, were executed, or absorbed into other orders like the [[Knights Hospitalier]]. The Portuguese branch changed their names to Knights of Christ.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.

The Templars sought to create a perfect world, although the means by which they sought to do so were questionable. In the 1129 Council of Troyes, the Order was officially recognized by the church, and in 1139, Pope Innocent II granted them diplomatic immunity in all provinces and territories and exemption from taxes. This allowed the faction to grow in numbers, strength and wealth quickly, and as they became a larger force, their responsibilities increased accordingly: the Order's many members were prominent figures in the second crusade.

Founded in [[Jerusalem]] in 1129, the Knights Templar sought a world at peace with itself. By 1191, they had come to the realization that such peace could only be maintained through use of the [[Pieces of Eden]], and made it their quest to gather as many as they could.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> That same year, after the theft of the Apple of Eden by the assassins [[Malik A-Sayf]] and [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] from the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of the year, ten Templar leaders from both [[Crusader]] and [[Saracen]] backgrounds fell to the blades of the assassin Altaïr, who was serving penance for breaking the three tenets during the theft. The deaths included not only the Grand Master of the Order, but also [[Al Mualim]], leader of the Order of Assassins in Syria and the only Templar not willing to share the power of the Apple with his nine brothers.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

With their leadership effectively wiped out by a single assassin, the Brotherhood retreated to the island of [[Cyprus]] under the command of a new Grand Master, [[Armand Bouchart]]. By the late 15th Century, the Brotherhood had regained a position of strength on the world stage, spreading deep into the Church and nobility of [[Italy]]. Under the command of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars sought to unify northern Italy under their command, and regain the Apple of Eden which they knew to be buried in Cyprus.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> Targeting [[Lorenzo de' Medici]], the de facto ruler of [[Florence]], the Templars found themselves confronted by the Assassin [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following two near fatal encounters with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons – [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], [[Petruccio Auditore|Petruccio]] and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]] – for the crimes of High Treason against the city of Florence. Corrupting the city official [[Uberto Alberti]], the city guards arrested Giovanni and two of his sons, narrowly missing their chance to capture the third, Ezio, who had been delivering and collecting letters for his father.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Realizing too late the treachery of Uberto Alberti, whom his father had considered a friend,<ref name="Assassin's Creed:Lineage">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref> Ezio appeared at the execution of his family, watching in horror as his father and brothers were hanged; he narrowly escaped the same fate himself. Unconcerned with the remaining Auditore, the Templars continued in their mission to assume control of the cities of northern Italy. In 1478, the Templar affiliated [[House of Pazzi]] made their push for control. In what would become known as the [[Pazzi conspiracy]], the family struck against the Medici during Mass, killing [[Giuliano de' Medici]] and critically wounding Lorenzo, who was saved only by the timely intervention of Ezio Auditore, the son who had been allowed to escape. Lorenzo's survival and the arrival of Ezio spelt doom for the Pazzi family, who were left to their fate by Rodrigo Borgia. [[Vieri de' Pazzi|Vieri]], [[Francesco de' Pazzi|Francesco]] and [[Jacopo de' Pazzi]] were all slain by the lone assassin whilst the Templars acknowledged their defeat in Florence, instead turning their attention to the city of [[Venice]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Utilizing the [[House of Barbarigo]], the Templars assumed control of Venice briefly in 1486, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the Piece of Eden from [[Cyprus]]. Two years later, in 1488, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with the Apple in hand. Bringing it to Borgia, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Brotherhood approached the [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] [[House of Orsi|brothers]] – [[Ludovico Orsi|Ludovico]] and [[Checco Orsi|Checco]] – to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar [[Girolamo Riario]] – [[Caterina Sforza]]. Invading [[Forlì]], the Orsi brothers demanded the map, and the Apple in exchange for the lives of Sforza's children. The brothers were rebuked, and assaulted the [[Rocca di Ravaldino]]. Despite the loss of the Apple, [[Rodrigo Borgia]] was ultimately unfazed, and in 1492 became [[Wikipedia:Pope Alexander VI|Pope Alexander VI]] in order to gain access to the Papal staff, another of the Pieces of Eden. In 1499 Borgia was once again confronted by the assassin Ezio, this time within the [[Sistine Chapel]] itself.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> The Templar's defeat, however, was not permanent, as Rodrigo's son, [[Cesare Borgia]], besieged Monteriggioni to regain the Apple of Eden and attempted to kill Ezio. Infiltrating and establishing countless corporate entities, by the 20th Century the Templars had positioned themselves within several world-defining positions, controlling whole nations and improving the planet's technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stifle world progress however; [[Adolf Hitler]] used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started [[wikipedia:World War II|a world-wide conflict]]. He was "fought" by his Templar contemporaries [[Winston Churchill]], [[Joseph Stalin]], and [[Franklin D. Roosevelt]], who under the guise of the Allied nations ultimately won the conflict, despite having planned the war all along, and orchestrating the peace that would follow.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

By the early [[Timeline|21st Century]], the Templar fronted [[Abstergo Industries]] had expanded into a global entity, far larger and more powerful than most companies that had come before it.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion,<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/> believing it to be "too large" a company.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

During this time, the Templars had access to a number of Pieces of Eden, however, the actions of the Assassins, coupled with the [[DIA Satellite Accident]] forced the Templars into stepping up the [[Animus]]-project, in the hope of finding another Piece capable of controlling the minds of humanity. By September of 2012, sixteen test subjects had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth – [[Desmond Miles]], the descendant of both [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/><ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Captured, for seven days Miles was forced to relieve the memories of his ancestor Altaïr in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all Pieces of Eden scattered across the world. With the information they had long sought in hand, the Templars set about gathering the remaining Pieces to ensure "absolute peace", although they soon found themselves in a race against the Assassin Order to obtain the Pieces first.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on [[Cryptic Messages|December 21, 2012]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/>

They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France deceived Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar, to serve his own agenda. Founded in Jerusalem in 1129, the Knights Templar sought a world at peace with itself. By 1191, they had come to the realization that such peace could only be maintained through use of the [[Pieces of Eden]], and made it their quest to gather as many as they could<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />. That same year, after the theft of the ''Apple of Eden'' by the assassins [[Malik A-Sayf]] and [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] from [[File:Maria-Templar-Robert-de-Sable.jpg|thumb|left|160px|Maria Thorpe, a Templar posing as Robert de Sable.]]the Templars, the Brotherhood entered into a brief period of sustained conflict with their Assassin enemies. Over the course of the year, ten Templar leaders from both [[Crusader]] and [[Saracen]] backgrounds fell to the blades of the assassin Altaïr, who was serving penance for crimes committed during the theft. The deaths included not only the Grand Master of the Order, but also [[Al Mualim]], leader of the Order of Assassins in Syria and the only Templar not willing to share the power of the Apple with his nine brothers<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />.

With their leadership effectively wiped out by a single assassin, the Brotherhood retreated to the island of [[Cyprus]] under the command of a new Grand Master, [[Armand Bouchart]]. Targeting [[Lorenzo de' Medici]], the de facto ruler of [[Florence]], the Templars found themselves confronted by the assassin [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], who whilst not knowing of their Templar allegiances, was rapidly piecing together the clues. Following a near fatal encounter with Giovanni himself, Borgia arranged for the trial and execution of Giovanni and his three sons – [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]], [[Petruccio Auditore|Petruccio]] and [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio]] – for the crimes of High Treason against the city of Florence. Realizing too late, the treachery of Uberto Alberti, whom his father had considered a friend<ref name="Assassin's Creed:Lineage">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>, Ezio appeared at the execution of his family, watching in horror as his father and brothers were hanged; he narrowly escaped such a fate himself. Unconcerned with the remaining Auditore, the Templars continued in their mission to assume control of the cities of northern Italy. In 1478, the Templar affiliated [[House of Pazzi]] made their push for control. In what would become known as the [[Pazzi conspiracy]], the family struck against the Medici during Mass, killing [[Giuliano de' Medici]] and fatally wounding Lorenzo, who was saved only by the timely intervention of Ezio Auditore, the son who had been allowed to escape. Lorenzo's survival and the arrival of Ezio spelt doom for the Pazzi family, who were left to their fate by Rodrigo Borgia. [[Vieri de' Pazzi|Vieri]], [[Francesco de' Pazzi|Francesco]] and [[Jacopo de' Pazzi]] were all slain by the lone assassin whilst[[File:Renaissance_Templar_Carlo_Grimaldi.jpg|thumb|right|240px|Ezio strikes at Carlo Grimaldi, a Renaissance Templar Leader.]] the Templars acknowledged their defeat in Florence, instead turning the attention to the city of [[Venice]]<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />.

Utilising the [[House of Barbarigo]], the Brotherhood assumed control of Venice briefly in 1485, before they were once again overthrown by the lone Assassin. The distraction of controlling the city had been beneficial to the Templars however, as it had distracted the Assassins from noticing the preparations being made for the retrieval of the piece of Eden from Cyprus. Two years later, in 1487, the Templar expedition returned to Venice with ''the Apple'' in hand. Bringing it to Borgia, an undercover Ezio engaged the Templar Grand Master and, with the assistance of his fellow Assassins, forced the Templars out of the city once more<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />. With the Apple in the hands of the Assassins, the Brotherhood approached the [[House of Orsi|Orsi]] [[House of Orsi|brothers]] – [[Ludovico Orsi|Ludovico]] and [[Checco Orsi|Checco]] – to obtain a map detailing the location of the Codex pages from the wife of the Templar [[Girolamo Riario]] – [[Caterina Sforza]]. Invading [[Forlì]], the Orsi brothers demanded the map, and ''the Apple'' in exchange for the lives of Sforza's children. The brothers were rebuked, and assaulted the [[Rocca di Ravaldino]]. Together with the city guards, the Assassins Ezio Auditore and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] held off the assault, although a second succeeded in claiming ''the Apple'' briefly<ref name="Assassin's Creed II: Battle of Forlì">''[[Battle of Forlì (DLC)|Assassin's Creed II: Battle of Forlì]]''</ref>.

Despite the loss of ''the Apple'', Rodrigo Borgia was ultimately unfazed, and in 1492 became Pope [[w:Alexander VI|Alexander VI]] in order to gain access to the Papal staff, another of the Pieces of Eden. In 1499 Borgia was once again confronted by the assassin Ezio, this time within the [[Sistine Chapel]] itself<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />. The Templar's defeat was not permanent, as Rodrigo Borgia's son, [[Cesare Borgia]], besieged Monteriggioni to gain the Apple of Eden and attempted to kill Ezio. Four years later Ezio went to the heart of the Templars itself, namely Rome, to strike back at the Templars and retrieve the Apple.

===Modern era===
Despite their many defeats at the hands of the assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the Templar order continued to exist within the shadows. Infiltrating or starting up countless corporate entities, the Templars positioned its members in several world-defining positions, improving the planets technological level significantly. The Templars also worked to stiffle world progress however; [[Adolf Hitler]] used a Piece of Eden to rise to power in Germany, and subsequently started a [[w:World War II|world-wide conflict]]. He was "fought" by his Templar counterparts Winston Churchill and [[Joseph Stalin]], who ultimately won the conflict though it appears that FDR was an assassin<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />.

For the most part this was not treated as suspicious, although there were those within the general population who viewed the company with suspicion<ref name="Assassin's Creed" />.

At this time, Abstergo Industries seemingly lacked a Piece of Eden capable of controlling the minds of humanity, and as such authorised the [[Animus]]-project in order to gain access to the memories of those who might know the location of one. By September of 2012, sixteen test subjects had been "retired" before the company succeeded with the seventeenth – [[Desmond Miles]], the descendant of both Altaïr, and Ezio Auditore<ref name="Assassin's Creed" /><ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />.

Captured, for seven days Miles was forced to relieve the memories of his ancestor [[Altaïr]] in order to reach one specific memory the Templars were seeking. The memory registered the moment his ancestor found a holographic map containing the locations of all [[Pieces of Eden]] scattered across the world. With the info in hand, the Templars started gathering the remaining intact pieces to ensure "absolute peace". They planned to send a satellite with a Piece mounted on it into orbit, with the launch scheduled on December 21, 2012. <ref name="Assassin's Creed" />. It should also be noted that they altered public records of history numerous times, which can explain inconsistencies with historical dates and in-game events.

They are well known by the distinctive white mantles with a red cross. Officially endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church around 1129, the Order became a favored charity throughout Christianity, and grew rapidly in membership. Despite losing their interests in Outremer, they still had financial holdings in Europe, but King Philip IV of France deceived Pope Clement V into disbanding the Knights Templar. The Order`s Knights either fled, were executed, or absorbed into other orders like the Knights Hospitalier. The Portuguese branch changed their names to Knights of Christ.

They were among the most skilled fighters at the time, which is reflected in the game. Their ruthlessness against non-Catholics was also infamous; this also is reflected in the game.

The '''Bonfire of the Vanities''' was an event centred in [[Florence]], in the year 1498, instigated by the Italian Dominican priest [[Girolamo Savonarola]]; who believed that the ''Renaissance idea'' had corrupted Italy, and preached for a return to medieval life. Savonarola, after acquiring the [[Piece of Eden|Apple of Eden]] from a wounded [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]], gained control of the city of Florence following the expulsion of the Medici using the Apple.

In the year 1498, Ezio once again returned to the city to find it in the grip of Savonarola and his lieutenants. Meeting with [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] on one of the Arno bridges, the two passed into the Oltrarno district of Florence and discovered the bodies of a contingent of soldiers bearing the mark of [[Rodrigo Borgia]]. Learning that the Apple only held sway over the minds of Savonarola's nine lieutenants, whilst the city's populous were controlled by fear, Ezio decided to assassinate the nine, whilst [[La Volpe]] and [[Paola]] brought the people of the city to Savonarola’s door.

After killing Savonarola’s nine lieutenants, the city was liberated and Savonarola trapped by the rioting crowd. Watching as Savonarola tried to use the Apple on the people themselves, Ezio disarmed the priest and let the citizens carry him away. The Apple in hand, the assassins followed the crowd to the [[Piazza della Signoria]], where a pyre stood ready to burn Savonarola alive. Ezio, deciding that no one deserved to die in such a way, killed the Dominican priest with his hidden blade before the flames could reach him. Revealing himself to the crowd, Ezio made a speech, telling them to follow their own path.

*Through the whole of this Sequence you will come across many battles between Borgia's and Savonarola's guards. If you decide to participate, they will fight each other and you.
