Through much of his life as an Assassin, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad wielded a personal sword of significant power. The blade's guard was shaped like an eagle's wings, with the pommel in the shape of an eagle's head.

During the Renaissance in Italy, another Assassin, Ezio Auditore also made use of the weapon.
History
Third Crusade
Altaïr made use of his sword throughout most of his early life as an Assassin, using it with great skill and ease during missions such as the quest for the Chalice.

By 1191, he instead began making use of a Syrian sword with a curved blade and a golden hilt. However, this sword was taken from him after Al Mualim demoted him to the rank of novice for breaking all three tenets of the Creed.

During his progression back into the higher ranks, Altaïr started off with a basic sword similar to his personal one, though it lacked a cross guard. After he assassinated the first four of his nine assigned targets, his personal sword was returned to him. He made use of it until the Syrian sword was granted to him again.
During the Borgia's attack on Monteriggioni however, he did not have time to re-equip it, and was lost in the rubble of the Villa, along with much of his armor and other weapons.
*It is unknown why the sword is available from the Monteriggioni blacksmith, since the sword (being Altaïr's personal weapon) would be assumed to be available together with his armor once it was unlocked.
Swami (died 1227) was a member of the Assassin Order during the Third Crusade period. After Abbas Sofian became the head of the Order's council, Swami became his right-hand man.
Biography
Early life
The son of Farim, Swami was a weak-minded Assassin apprentice who refused to learn the proper ways of the Order. He was incompetent and thought himself to be better than the other apprentices, when in reality, he was one of the worst.

Coup d'etat
Circa 1225, Abbas Sofian, a high-ranking Assassin, planned a coup d'état to take over the Assassin Order from its temporary leader, Malik Al-Sayf, while the Order's Master, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was absent. Swami joined Abbas in the plan, and he was ordered to kill Sef Ibn-La'Ahad, the son of the Master. Moments before doing so, he told Sef that Sef's own father ordered his death. After successfully killing Sef, Abbas then placed the murder weapon in Malik's bed, framing him, and testified that he heard Malik and Sef arguing that same day. Malik was consequently thrown into prison, and a council was formed to rule the Order - with Abbas at its head.

Return of the Mentor
Circa 1227, Altaïr, his wife, and son returned to Masyaf from Mongolia after having successfully assassinated Genghis Khan, and Swami was sent to greet them upon their arrival. Meeting Altaïr and his family, Swami was asked why they weren't greeted by Rauf as requested. Swami replied that he had died of fever, but Altaïr had his doubts. Swami also informed Altaïr of the presence of the council, and Malik's imprisonment. He also told them that Sef had fled to Alamut, and Altaïr's remaining son Darim left Masyaf to retrieve him.

The next day, Altaïr went to meet the council with his wife Maria, but Swami intercepted their path and led the way. Altaïr met the council, and noticed that the council was made of the most weak-minded of the Order. During an argument between Abbas and Altaïr, he was led to believe that Sef was killed by Malik, henceforth his imprisonment.

Death
After having saved Malik from prison and hearing the truth about his son's death, Altaïr angrily went to the council. In his absence, Swami was quickly ordered to kill Malik in Altaïr's quarters and beheaded him, putting his head in a burlap sack. Altaïr met with Abbas, and they were later joined by Swami, who gave Abbas the burlap sack. Abbas looked in it, then showed it to Altaïr. After Abbas was done questioning Altaïr, he demanded that the Apple of Eden be given to him. Altaïr took it out of his robes and held it out, in an attempt to show the other Assassins that Abbas only craved to use the power of the Apple to corrupt and control them, as Al Mualim did.

When Swami went to retrieve the Apple, he told Altaïr that before he killed Sef, he told him that his own father ordered his death. Altaïr became enraged with hate and pain, so much so that it was transferred into the Apple. When Swami touched the Apple, his body lost control and he reached for his dagger. Maria jumped in front of Altaïr, telling him he let his anger get the best of him. However, in his uncontrolled state, Swami stabbed Maria's back. Altaïr quickly stabbed Swami through the bottom of his jaw, killing him.

Trivia
*In The Secret Crusade, Swami killed himself in the novel by touching the Apple of Eden, but in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Altaïr used the Apple on Swami.
Darim Ibn-La'Ahad (born 1195) was a member of the Assassin Order and the first son of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Maria Thorpe. Later he became the brother of Sef Ibn-La'Ahad, their second son.

Biography
Early life
Darim was born in Masyaf in 1195, where he was raised by his parents, who trained him in the ways of the Assassins. Over time, Darim's skills with a crossbow placed him as an expert of the weapon.

Assassination of Genghis Khan
By 1217, Genghis Khan's Mongolian Empire was expanding rapidly from the east and was slowing the expansion of the Assassin Order in that direction. In addition to this, Darim's father had believed that the Khan held a Piece of Eden known as The Sword. Thus, Darim and his parents left immediately to kill Khan, while his younger brother Sef remained in Masyaf to care for his wife and children and Altaïr's right-hand man, Malik Al-Sayf, was placed in charge of the Order until their return.

As of early 1227, they had reached Mongolia and met with one of the local assassins, Qulan Gal, who infiltrated Khan's camp with Altaïr. Although Darim's now elderly father had lost much of his stealth in his old age and was detected by one of the guards, who was able to significantly injure the Assassin before Altaïr was saved by Qulan Gal. Qulan Gal then helped Altaïr to escape the camp and the Assassin's regrouped to formulate a new plan.

Realising the threat to his life, Genghis Khan tried to flee on horseback, although Qulan Gal had been expecting this and planned for him to do just that. The Mongolian Assassin then proceeded to shoot down Khan's horse, while Darim subsequently finished Khan himself with his crossbow. After ten years, the group had accomplished what they set out to do and Darim and his parents finally returned home.

Return to Masyaf
Later in 1227, Darim and his parents made it back to Masyaf only to be greeted by a former Assassin apprentice named Swami. Swami told them that the member of the Order who was supposed to greet the family upon their return home, Rauf, had died of fever during their absence and that Malik had been arrested by the new leader of the Order, Abbas Sofian for unknown reasons. Swami then told Darim that his brother Sef had retreated with his family to Alamut, at which point Altaïr urged him to retrieve his younger brother and return to Masyaf.

Life in exile
Some time after arriving in Alamut, he met with his sister-in-law and nieces, only to be told that Sef was dead, having been supposedly killed by Malik in 1225. At that point, Darim chose to stay in Alamut and later was joined by his father in 1227.

Altaïr told Darim that in Masyaf, Abbas had staged a coup in 1225 and taken over the Order, before framing Malik for Sef's murder, which Swami had committed. He said that he had successfully freed Malik, only for the man to be murdered by Swami shortly thereafter. After this, Altaïr and Maria had confronted Abbas, who made public Altaïr's infiltration of the prison, causing a decimation in the older Assassin's support. Demanding the Apple from him, Abbas sent Swami to retrieve it. Before Swami retrieved the Apple, he bragged to Altaïr that in Sef's final moments, Swami had told him that his father had ordered his execution. Altaïr's rage manifested itself in the Apple and when Swami touched it he went insane, mutilating himself first with his hands, then pulling out his knife and stabbing himself. However in his frenzy, he unknowingly killed Darim's mother, slitting her throat. Feeling insecure at the deaths of his youngest son and his wife, Altaïr fled instead of confronting Abbas.

Darim spent most of the next 20 years living with his father, sister-in-law and nieces, until eventually his sister-in-law took her daughters to live in Alexandria. Later, Darim himself was driven away from Alamut by his father's state of depression and his renewed obsession with the Apple. Darim departed to France and later England to warn of the advancing threat of the Mongol Empire.

Later life
Eventually, he returned to Masyaf in 1247 following his father's return to power as Grand Master of the Order. It is unknown whether his relations with his father were restored following this. Darim travelled to Constantinople to invite the Venetian explorers Niccolò and Maffeo Polo in 1257 to temporarily reside in Masyaf.

At the end of the same year, Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, attacked Masyaf. Darim was ordered by Altaïr to leave Masyaf before the Mongols reached the fortress.

Coup d'etat
Circa 1225,Abbas Sofian, a high-ranking Assassin, planned a coup d'état to take over the Assassin Order from its temporary leader, Malik Al-Sayf, while the Order's Master, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad was absent.
The Crossbow was a long range weapon, consisting of a bow mounted on a stock, that shot arrow bolts. It could also be used in close-quarters combat.

History
High Middle Ages
Altaïr used a standard crossbow despite common usage of the handheld crossbow in Europe and the Middle East during the time of the Third Crusade. When Altaïr was disguised as a soldier and then afterwards a scholar, he had a crossbow attached on his back despite not having one after killing a crossbowman under the disguise of a scholar.

Renaissance
The crossbow was a ranged weapon that Ezio Auditore could purchase for 12,800 florins at any Blacksmith shop in Rome. After purchasing the weapon, the number of bolts could be upgraded by buying the medium and large quivers from Tailor shops. Each quiver increased the maximum number of bolts carried by 5 each time, with the default number of bolts being 15 and the maximum number being 25.

The large quiver requires the completion of the Pulling Threads shop quest before it is made available, and is granted for free once the quest is completed.

Usage
Stealth
The crossbow was like the pistol's complementary ranged weapon; it had the same range, but was silent. The way the crossbow was fired was similar to that of the pistol, though it aimed faster and could be fired while moving and while on beams.

Unlike the pistol, which alerted guards the moment it was fired, the crossbow only called attention to Ezio when the target collapsed.

Combat
The crossbow could be used in battle alongside its stealth capabilities. In battle, it could be fired at close range, as well as being able to counter an enemy's attack. When fired at close range, the crossbow would kill the targeted enemy but doing so would incur a rather long reload time. Crossbowmen and some horsemen used the crossbow in battle, firing repeatedly at Ezio, at close quarters as well as at a long range. Ezio could also use the crossbow to defend against charging horsemen by blocking them with the crossbow equipped.

Finishing moves
The crossbow featured some animations while counter-killing opponents. However, the crossbow could not counter long or heavy weapons.

Skull Smasher
Ezio thrusts his crossbow into the target's abdomen. As his target doubles over, Ezio, with both hands, smashes the bottom of his crossbow onto the back of his target's head, forcing the target to land face-first onto the ground (does not need ammunition or a reload to be performed).

Suffocation
Ezio forcefully thrusts his target with the metal, beak-like tip of his crossbow twice. The first time in the abdomen, and the second time in the neck. The target slowly backs up and falls to his knees, holding his neck while choking, and collapses (does not need ammunition or a reload to be performed).

Spinal Shot
Ezio thrusts his crossbow into the target's abdomen, and then steps back to shoot him directly down the back of his neck as he doubles over in pain (requires ammunition and must be reloaded in order to be performed).

Trip Shot
Ezio ducks, spins around, and sweeps his target off of his feet with the crossbow. Ezio then quickly rises upright and shoots his target, who is lying dazed on the ground (requires ammunition and must be reloaded in order to be performed).

Trivia
*A crossbow was planned to be one of Altaïr's weapon in early designs of Assassin's Creed, but was removed from the final game due to historical inaccuracies. The crossbow did, however, feature in the E3 trailer and the game's video introduction.
*The crossbow is featured in the mobile version of Assassin's Creed, a historical mistake by the developers, it was obtained prior to his confrontation with Majd Addin. The crossbow can be used to kill enemies at a safe distance, to trigger gear mechanisms or to shoot down flame-holders to light torches. The ammunition of the weapon can be refilled by walking into a weapon recharge point.
*The crossbow functions the same way as the pistol, however, it is less powerful, as it does not always kill certain targets such as Borgia Captains, unlike the hidden gun, which always guarantees a kill, unless used on an assassination target.
*In order to unlock the large quiver upgrade, the shop quest "Pulling Threads" must be completed first.
*Most of the time, when Ezio performs the Trip Shot counter attack, the firing sound will not occur.
*During the Animus loading screen, if Ezio draws his crossbow, a single crossbow bolt can be found lying on the ground. It disappears when the crossbow is put away and vice versa.
*When performing certain actions with the crossbow, Ezio's upper body does not move at all (besides the arm holding the crossbow while he is drawing it/beginning to aim/sheathing it). This may give Ezio a robotic appearance when running, as his entire upper body is completely still while performing any actions.
*In a trailer seen at the E3 conference (above picture of Ezio on the Colosseum) Ezio is seen equipped with a different crossbow to the one in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. This particular crossbow has the same design as the ones the Crossbowmen guards use.
Bombs were explosive weapons used by Assassins from as early as the Middle Ages. They could be used for a variety of tactics, including escape, assault and distraction.

Smoke bombs
Smoke bombs were devices that were used more for distraction, rather than attack. Using a powder technology from the Far East, the bomb released a thick, grayish smoke screen for about eight seconds when thrown.

With a smoke bomb device, an Assassin was able to halt any enemy or target, and allow for an easy assassination or escape. This allowed them to strike specific targets, or take down larger groups of enemies without being seen or encountering resistance.

History
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad had access to smoke bombs during his quest for the Chalice. He could carry up to five of them at a time, though evidently stopped using them after the events at Solomon's Temple.

Smoke bombs were the only type of bombs that were commonly available to Ezio Auditore up until the 16th century. However, upon traveling to Constantinople during his search for the Seals, he gained access to a far more extensive choice of bombs.

During the Renaissance, smoke bombs were disposable, and had to be purchased for 350 florins each. Ezio could carry a maximum of three at once, which he stored in a non-upgradeable pouch.

Ezio also made use of smoke bombs in the city of Rome, though the actual cloud itself was visually a lot smaller than during the previous century. Smoke bombs were also used by Assassin recruits to stun guards once they reached the rank of Veterano (Veteran).

Hand-held bombs
Hand-held bombs were small explosive devices designed and manufactured by Ezio's close friend, Leonardo da Vinci. Consisting of a small, steel ball filled with sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate, they also possessed a small fuse which required lighting before the device could be detonated.

History
These bombs were first used against Cesare Borgia's diehards, who had amassed a sizable military force in the city of Valencia.

During the attack on Valencia, Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli, each equipped with ten hand-held bombs, brought chaos to Cesare's military forces. They destroyed twelve Borgia ships, and an entire military encampment.

Crafting
Upon traveling to Constantinople, Ezio learned how to create a wide range of bombs, with more than 100 variations. In general, they are divided into three categories: lethal, tactical and diversion.

The Assassins had set up Bomb-crafting stations throughout the cities, in order to be able to craft bombs whenever they came across one.

The bombs could be customized based on their different components; casing, gunpowder layer, and effect layer. The casing affected the bomb's structure, while the gunpowder layer defined the properties of the explosion itself, along with the effect layer providing a further result on detonation; such as the scattering of caltrops.

Ezio was able to collect different resources for each of these bombs, and could craft up to five bombs per pouch, given a single combination and allowed Ezio to carry a maximum of 15 bombs.

Ezio can test a bomb in the VR room to see it's effects without having to waste any bombs.

The Helmschmied Drachen Armor is a pre-order bonus for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. It functions as a cosmetic outfit that has no effect on gameplay.

Availability
Codes unlocking the Helmschmied Drachen Armor were available through any of the following:
*Purchase of the Codex or Auditore Edition of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
*Pre-order Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood from Amazon.com, Ubisoft.com, Steam (for the PC version), or Play.com.Fact
*Purchase of The Da Vinci Disappearance DLC for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
*Pre-order the Italian edition of Assassin's Creed: The Fall, issue 2.

Appearance
The robes below the waist use the same pattern as Altaïr's outfit from Assassin's Creed, except the Drachen robes are tailored to Ezio's body and have a leather texture rather than cloth. On the waist, the Assassin's emblem is flanked by rows of throwing knife sheathes. The torso is completely covered with stylized metal plates. The upper right arm guard extends higher than the shoulder; the left shoulder omits this for a normal spadula to make room for the cape. The matching bracers of the Drachen Armor do not sport either the Assassin or eagle logo, as Ezio's normal bracers do. Leather gloves are worn on each hand (other outfits have only one or no gloves). The inner collar over Ezio's chest and neck is closed.

The Helmschmied Drachen Armor cannot be dyed. Although the outfit hides the presence of equipped armor and the Climb Leap Glove, these items still function normally.

Bugs
As with other cosmetic outfits in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the Helmschmied Drachen Armor overrides the outfit Ezio is expected to be wearing in the game. This leads to some bugs:
*The Drachen Armor is visible even when Ezio is supposed to be in disguise as a guard, however, other guards will not notice this change.
*When fighting for florins in the Caserma di Alviano, Ezio normally removes his armor for the fist-fighting. However, if the Drachen Armor is equipped, he remains in the armor instead of changing into shirtless clothing.
*Whenever Ezio removes his hood (such as during cutscenes or at Monteriggioni), the Drachen's hood will remain upright.
*During the Cristina Memories, when wearing the Drachen Armor, Ezio is older and bearded rather than the clean-shaven youth he was in Assassin's Creed II.

Trivia
*"Helmschmied Drachen" is German for "Helmet Smith Dragon". There is also a set of Helmschmied Armor in Assassin's Creed II.
*The Helmschmied armor also appears as a purchasable item in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, where its description states that it is "The finest in foreign engineering" and has a price of 200,000 florins.
*Official Concept artwork shows that the robes of the Helmschmied Drachen Armor were planned to be colored white; in-game, the robes are primarily black.

The Crusader is a multiplayer character for the upcoming game Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Biography
Betrayal of Assassin Order
Before the events of Assassin's Creed, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad came back to Masyaf to find that his mentor, Al Mualim, had been captured and some of his fellow Assassins murdered.

Before the events occurred, the Crusader was a secret Templar, who had entered into the Assassins before his betrayal, though he stated that he was not a traitor from the start for he "could not betray those who he never truly loved." He then told Altaïr that taking any steps forwards would result in the death of his mentor, and closed the gates to the fortress.

In order to get to the Templar, Altaïr was forced to find a different route to infiltrate the Assassin fortress. After successfully finding his way inside, he then assassinated the Crusader and allowed him to redeem himself, but to no avail.

Personality and ethics
The Crusader believed the Creed, but thought that he may not be wise enough to understand it; he suspected that he was too wise "to believe such rubbish".

Appearance
He wears black armor with silver lining and chainmail suit with a helmet that shows the Templar cross. His name is currently unknown, though his weapon is a two-handed sword.

Unique Moves
(Low Profile, Front)

The Crusader casually walks up to his target and flicks his head forward hitting the target on the bridge of the nose. This makes the target flinch and hold their face, in this time the Crusader draws his sword and, holding it with two hands, slashes it through the targets neck severing the spinal chord at the neck, killing the unfortunate victim instantly.

(Low Profile, Back)

The Crusader quickly walks behind his victim and draws his sword. He then lances his blade through the victims back, the shocked victim then looks down at the blade that has pierced right through their body as the Crusader pulls his blade out of the victims body and quickly sheaths his sword.

(High Profile, Front)

(High Profile, Back)

(Bench Kill)

The Crusader grabs his seated target's foot and drags them off the bench, until their head rests against it. Before his victim can do anything to defend themselves, the Crusader forcefully kicks them in the face, violently sending their head backwards and breaking his target's neck on the bench behind them.

(Aerial Kill)
Short blades were short, curved bladed weapons that traded power and reach for a faster swing rate.

History
High Middle Ages
The short blade first became available after Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad had reached the third rank. Like the sword, his skill with the short blade increased as he climbed up the ranks.

The first short blade he obtained had a wooden handle, though he received an all metal variation at a later rank. In both instances, he carried the short blade across his back with the handle facing down.

In battle, he wielded the short blade with an icepick grip, and often used it in conjunction with throwing knives.

15th Century
In a similar fashion to Altaïr, Ezio Auditore was equipped with both a long and short blade, though they were sheathed together at his side. He could purchase various types of short blades from Blacksmiths, each with unique speed, damage and deflection properties.

In battle, he would wield the short blade much as Altaïr did, though he did not learn to use it alongside throwing knives until he became a Master Assassin.

Several of his allies, such as thieves and courtesans, also used short blades in battle. Certain guards and assassination targets, such as agiles and Rodrigo Borgia, made use of short blades as well. However, none of these held their weapons in an icepick grip.

Combat
The short blade was much faster than the longsword, making it ideal for dispatching large numbers of low-ranked enemies. However, as an enemy's rank increased, the short blade's effectiveness diminished due to the higher quality armor used by them.

For Altaïr, the special, close-ranged attack of most short blades could only be performed from behind, and took the form of slitting an enemy's throat, or stabbing them in the shoulder or the back, which would always result in an instant kill.

When used with the short blade, Altaïr could throw a single throwing knife mid-combat. Similarly, Ezio could dual-wield the short blade with throwing knives, and could throw multiple throwing knives at once.
Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed, Altaïr is the only person to use a short blade other than Malik & his brother until Malik loses his arm and when his brother dies. All other NPCs use long blades.
*The last-tier short blade Altaïr uses resembles the Sultan's Knife, meaning that it was the most powerful weapon during the Third Crusade. However, in Ezio's time, the most powerful short blade is the Notched Cinquedea.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, once all throwing knives have been used up, the special attack of the short blade is switched to that of the fists, in which Ezio throws sand to momentarily incapacitate his target.
*In the Blacksmith stores in Brotherhood, the Notched Cinquedea has the store image of the Channeled Cinquedea, and vice versa.
*Unlike in Assassin's Creed II, in Brotherhood, the Channeled Cinquedea is a weapon that cannot be purchased, and can only be taken from a guard.
*Only very few hold the short blade with an icepick grip. These include Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Tamir, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Francesco de' Pazzi, Bernardo Baroncelli, and Claudia Auditore da Firenze.
*A Notched Cinquedea can be seen stuck in the table in Ezio's office in Monteriggioni.
*In every Assassin's Creed game to feature the short blade as a usable weapon, there is a kill that Altaïr and Ezio use where the blade is not used at all. It involves breaking an enemy's leg with a kick, and then hooking their free arm around their head and snapping their neck.
The Wounded Eagle is a memory in Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

Description
During a carriage race against Ezio Auditore, the Byzantine Templar Captain Leandros calls his guards for help. After he pulls ahead of the Assassin's wagon, Leandros' men manage to stop Ezio by throwing a bomb under the wheels of his cart.

As Ezio's carriage is hurled from the cliffside, he falls into a canyon, only managing to survive by using a rocky outcrop to slow his descent. Despite this, he hits the ground next to the splintered remains of his carriage.

After seeing that Ezio had survived the fall, although wounded, Leandros orders his guards to kill him. Managing to survive the battle in his weakened state, Ezio infiltrates the Templar stronghold and makes his way to a tower, where he finally kills Leandros.

Dialogue
In the race between the two, Leandros rushes through the canyon as Ezio begins to catch up. However, he manages to ram into Ezio's carriage and almost forces him off of the cliff, slowing the Assassin down enough to speed past him. Soon, Leandros reaches his destination, where he notices a few of his guards.

*Leandros: (to the guards) Stop him!

One of Leandros' guards hurls a bomb towards Ezio's carriage, which falls underneath his cart and explodes, sending him, along with the carriage, into the valley below.

Leandros approaches the guards.

*Leandros: Do not take your eyes off this road for a moment. Do you understand me?<br />Nothing gets through!

Ezio manages to climb back onto the road, which one of the guards notices.

*Guard: Leandros! (points at Ezio)

Leandros turns around, spotting Ezio.

*Leandros: Well, well. Look what crawled out of its hole to die!

Turning around to his guards, Leandros gives them an order, before signalling two guards to follow him.

*Leandros: He's at death's door. Finish him off!<br />Bring me his head, or throw yourselves into the canyon!

As Leandros walks away, the remaining guards approach Ezio, considering him as an easy target. Preparing himself for a fight, despite his injury to his abdomen, Ezio manages to survive and proceeds towards the village. He then steps onto a spinning waterwheel to reach the top of the fortress wall.

*Ezio: This used to be so easy.

Once he reaches the top, Ezio makes his way through the guard infested village. He manages to get past them all and finds Leandros behind fortified walls.
