Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles is a video game released for the Nintendo DS and Symbian Mobile, as a prequel to the video game Assassin's Creed. It was published by Ubisoft, developed by Gameloft and was released in the United States on February 5, 2008. A port with improved graphics and gameplay was made for the iPhone OS by Ubisoft, and was released on the App Store on April 23, 2009.
Weapons
Sword'Bold text-The sword is the main weapon used in the game, unlike in in other assassins creed games the sword uses a system of light and heavy attacks which can string together to form combos. You can still counter attack using the sword and it will stun the enemy for a period of time. All of the guards in the game are equipped with swords.
Daggers
Gameplay
Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles takes advantage of the Nintendo DS's features. The game's main gameplay is primarily Prince of Persia-style platforming, mixed with stealth and combat. It utilizes the touch-screen for mini-games, like interrogation and pickpocketing, as well as for displaying a map during standard gameplay.

The game's combat system consists primarily of weak attacks, strong attacks, and combos of the two, as well as using bombs and projectiles.
Seven different weapons are available, including the Hidden Blade, Altaïr's Sword, a Crossbow, explosive bombs, smoke bombs, throwing knives and a grappling hook which can be used to rip enemies off their feet. The grappling hook is also used for swinging across gaps with no rope.

Weapons and skills can be upgraded or unlocked by using orbs, which can be found throughout the game. The game also features three different levels of difficulty, allowing for more experienced players to take on a bigger challenge.

Plot
The year is 1190 AD, and the Third Crusade is engulfing the Holy Land. Crusaders clash with Saracens for control of the Holy City, Jerusalem.

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, an Assassin, returns home to Alep from an arduous journey, and finds it under attack by the sworn enemies of the Assassins, the Knights Templar. He has no choice but to repel the attack, defeating many of them and even killing a low-ranking captain before the attack is halted. Tasked afterwords by Al Mualim, the Grand Master of the Assassin's Order, to find and retrieve a sacred object known as the Chalice, which is said to have the power to unite under one flag all the factions of whatever side possesses it (either the Crusaders or the Saracens) and end the Third Crusade in victory for one side or the other, Altaïr sets off immediately on his new quest.

Beginning his journey in Damascus, Altaïr meets with a Rafiq, who tells him (after testing his skills on a target) that the merchant, Tamir, has connections to the Templars in the area. Upon interrogating Misbah, a man with connections to Tamir, Altaïr confronts him and, before killing Tamir, learns that the Chalice is kept in the Temple of the Sand and that Altaïr needs three keys to enter it. Altaïr then visits the circus dancer Fajera, but she is unwilling to help, leaving Altaïr to fight a circus brute known as, Badr. After defeating the man and catching Fajera, she gives Altaïr the first of the three keys, and tells him that a man at the Templar hospital in Tyre can help him find the two other keys. Before he leaves, Fajera also tasks Altaïr with killing a Templar named Alaat.

Later arriving in Tyre, Altaïr first seeks Hamid - the Tyre rafiq - from whom he learns that Roland Napule, head of the hospital and a Templar, has been questioning someone recently. In order to get into the hospital, Altaïr then navigates through the sewer, enters the building from below and then proceeds to assassinate Roland. Altaïr is then given the second key by a prisoner of Roland, an old man who has been to the mysterious Temple of the Chalice.

Traveling then to Jerusalem and speaking with Kadar, a local Assassin agent, Altaïr learns that the Templar leader of the region, Basilisk, is usually at the Jerusalem royal palace with the king, and that he has the third key. The king is going to have a party somewhere soon, and in order to get closer to Basilisk, Altaïr logically decides that this location should be discovered. Overhearing some of the noblemen's conversations, Altaïr then questions Ayman, a man invited to the party and finds out where the party is about to begin, infiltrates it with the help of one of Kadar's men, and encounters Lord Basilisk for the first time. After a brief battle with him, Altaïr gets the key, but has no time to kill the Templar master before Basilisk runs away.

Afterwords, a group of Templar attack Hamid and steal a map to the desert temple where the Chalice is supposedly located. Altaïr then chases them to their tower and climbs to the top, facing heavy resistance including catapults, archers, and a mindless man known as The Brute (whom he faces off against in a courtyard). After making his way through the tower defenses and killing the archer captain in charge, Altaïr encounters the Master, an Assassin-like figure who is actually a high-ranking Templar. Having no choice, Altaïr fights his way through tower, killing the Master's guards and his student until finally, he reaches the Master himself, kills the Templar and takes the map back.

Altaïr then leaves the Tower afterwords, following the map which leads him to the Temple of the Sand. There, he encounters Templar forces and fights his way to the antechamber, which he enters after defeating a large brute carring an axe. Inside he finds an empty chest and Basilisk, who hints that the Chalice is in fact a woman. Basilisk taunts Altaïr then flee's once more, yet Altaïr manages to escape back to Tyre as the Temple collapses.

In Tyre, Hamid tells him that in order to infiltrate the local Templar stronghold, he needs to free two captured men. After finding and freeing the captive brothers (who pinpoint the entrance for him), Altaïr infiltrates the hold (encountering another brute on the way), where he fights and badly wounds Basilisk. Proposing to Basilisk the exchange of the Templar's life for information, Altaïr listens as Basilisk reveals that the Chalice is in fact, in Jerusalem and that the Templars are besieging Acre, planning to poison the water to speed up their assault. Before leaving for Acre, Altaïr sets fire to Basilisk's ships so the Templar Master cannot reach the Chalice before him.

Journeying then to the besieged Acre, Altaïr helps the city by fighting off attacking Templar soldiers, infiltrating the siege camp first in the guise of a soldier, then as a scholar, and finally killing the Templar commander. Altaïr manages to escape the camp using a catapult He then goes to Jerusalem, where he successfully rescues the Chalice from a group of Templars. Altaïr identifies the Chalice as Adha, a woman he knew before the events of game. From her, he learns that the Templars have paid off Harash, the second-in-command of the Assassins.

Altaïr's plan was to attack Alep, the assassin fortress, kill Harash and run away with Adha, but after making his way through Harash's Assassin Guards and killing him, Adha is kidnapped by Basilisk and taken to their port in Tyre. Altaïr then fights through the Templar forces and kills Basilisk in one final confrontation on his ship. However, he is disheartened to find out that Adha is on a different ship, which escapes before Altaïr can catch it. He swims to shore and, seeing the Templar ship far off in the distance, yells "I will find you, Adha!" just before the game ends.

Memories
Altaïr's Chronicles contains a feature in the main menu called Memories (much like the DNA Sequence's from Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood). This lets the player select a mission that they have already completed, and continue the game from there. The Memories are categorized into 13 chapters, with up to 5 sub-chapters within them (e.g 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4).

Reception
The Nintendo DS version of the game has been received with mixed opinions. IGN gave it a 7/10, Gamespot gave it 6/10, Nintendo Power gave it a 7.5/10, X-Play gave it a 2/5, and Game Informer magazine gave it a 6.5 out of 10. The iPhone version was well received overall with a 4.5 stars overall from customers reviews on the App Store.

The Siege of Masyaf was a direct result of the disastrous mission to recover the Apple at Solomon's Temple, from the hands of the Templars. Robert de Sable the Grand Master of the Knights Templar- seeking the artifact and tired of the Assassin's Order's interruptions in Templar affairs- besieged the Assassin fortress of Masyaf in an attempt to destroy the Brotherhood.

Call to Arms
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad returned from Solomon's Temple, and confesses to his master Al Mualim what had transpired. Stating that the Templar Grand Master, Robert de Sable, was not alone, and that he failed to retrieve the treasure, Al Mualim was enraged to find out that his best disciple was not able to accomplish his task. Just then, Malik A-Sayf, one of the two Assassins that accompanied Altaïr to the temple, arrived with his arm severely bleeding. Malik shows outrage to Altaïr's actions at the Temple, stating that if it were not for him, his brother Kadar would still be alive.

Just then, Malik stated that Altaïr's actions nearly cost them victory, for the injured Assassin was able to retrieve the Piece of Eden, and then handed it over to Al Mualim. Though they were able to retrieve the Apple, Malik revealed that Robert de Sable followed him, and was on his way to Masyaf. Just then, an informant warns Al Mualim of invaders attacking the village. Seeing the Templar's invasion as an invitation into a battle, Al Mualim responds by dispersing the Assassins into the city in order to drive them out.

As Al Mualim dismissed the informant, Altaïr was confronted by the Master before being dismissed himself, stating that his punishment will have to wait. He is then dismissed by Al Mualim, with the same order as the other Assassins, which is to drive out all of the invaders. As he left the fortress, he met up with Rauf, who requested for his aid. Rauf asked Altaïr to distract the Templars while he helped his men move civilians inside the fortress.

Afterwards, Altaïr ran down through the village and protected it as best as he could. Villagers were beaten and executed by Templars, only adding to the panic as Assassins fought Templar knights. After making an effort to defend the village, the Masyaf guards were overrun by the reinforcements of the Templar army, and had to flee back to the fortress.

Men without fear
As the last of the Masyaf citizens and guards entered the fortress, Rauf met with Altaïr and ordered the Assassin to follow him to the top of the tower, where he and another Assassin waited on platforms extending from it. It was not long until Altaïr witnessed Robert de Sable and his army finally arrive at the fortress gates, trying to force Al Mualim to surrender. Robert threatened that he would let the village starve, and executed a hostage in an effort to intimidate Al Mualim. However, this had no effect on the master of the Assassins. Al Mualim shouted back that his men were not afraid of death; they welcomed it. Robert then provoked Al Mualim more, asking him to show evidence of this.

Altaïr and the other Assassins delivered it to him by all performing a simultaneous Leap of Faith from the tower, and appearing to throw themselves into the deep ravine surrounding two sides of Masyaf. Altaïr and Rauf were successful in their leaps and landed safely in haystacks, however the third Assassin badly broke his leg. Rauf requested Altaïr to proceed without him, so he could comfort the injured Assassin. Over long logs of wood, Altaïr crawled his way over the gorge; high above him were the cliffs that towered over the river.

Once he reached the second tower, he climbed upwards to get inside. There, he cut through a rope that held back a huge pile of large logs, releasing them. The heavy timber rolled down and crushed much of Robert de Sable's army, driving them away.

Into the Void
After routing de Sable, the Order started to repair the damage done to the village, as well as collect the dead bodies of their brethren. Al Mualim gave recognition to Altaïr for stopping the attacking Templar, but also berated him for his previous selfish act, proclaiming that it was the very reason the Templars had come in the first place. Al Mualim had two of his Assassin disciples, and also Altaïr's brethren, bound the wayward Assassin by the arms. The Grand Master began to lecture Altaïr in front of his Assassin comrades, reminding him of the tenets that built the order, and how he has disrespected all of these.

Reminding him of every tenet, Altaïr still showed signs of disregard for the higher authority of his master, interrupting Al Mualim as he spoke the first tenet, to which an unamused Al Mualim slapped Altaïr across the face, telling him to speak only when told. After that, he spoke of the mistakes Malik had mentioned to him, telling him how he broke the first tenet by killing the old man during their quest. The second tenet was about how an Assassin hides in plain sight. He then spoke how Altaïr broke this by exposing himself to Robert before striking.

The third was his most extreme crime, claimed Al Mualim. The third tenet was that of never compromising the Brotherhood. Altaïr broke this due to his selfish acts in Jerusalem, and drawing Robert de Sable into Masyaf, nearly destroying the Brotherhood. Done with his lecture, Al Mualim states that he cannot abide by Altaïr, due to his treachery. Altaïr said that he was no traitor, yet Al Mualim stands by his decision, using Altaïr's actions as evidence to his treachery.

Bidding Altaïr peace, Al Mualim stabs his disciple with a short blade by the stomach, rendering Altaïr unconscious. As the Assassin lay down on the ground, he enters a mysterious coma, where the Assassin was said to have felt death's embrace.

Aftermath
After a short while, Altaïr awoke in front of Al Mualim's desk, alive and well. Confused, Altaïr asked how he is alive after being stabbed by his master. Al Mualim explained that it was done so that he may be born anew, so that he may be reinstated into the order, enlightened on the way of the Assassins although Al Mualim probably used the Apple of Eden to create the illusion. After waking up a novice, void of any weapon, Altaïr is then given a task by Al Mualim: To find and bring to him the traitor Masun.

In Assassin's Creed, pickpocketing is an important method of gaining information. It is also the only way to restock Throwing Knives, apart from going to Masyaf and/or going to an Assassin's Bureau. In Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, it is an optional way to acquire florins and items.

How to Pickpocket
To pickpocket, the player must press the Lock On button. Depending on control settings, the Lock On button will be either L1 (Playstation 3), Left Trigger (Xbox 360), or F (PC default layout). While targeting the victim, move Altaïr a few paces behind them and hold the Free Hand button, which will be either (Playstation 3), B (Xbox 360), or Shift (PC default layout). Once Altaïr is close enough, as long as you are not detected by the victim or a Guard, you will steal from the victim's bag, a successful pickpocket. With Ezio, you simply hold the Steal button while in Low Profile and go near any target with no need to Lock On.
In AC Altair's Chronicles you need to use the touchscreen to remove a key from a coin purse without touching the edges or the other objects.

Assassin's Creed
Who to Pickpocket
There are two kinds of people that can be pickpocketed, always identifiable by a pouch around their waist, on their left side.

Informants
Every so often during Investigations, there will be a person with a bit of useful information, be it a map or a letter. They always so conveniently place this bit of information in a pouch around their waist - easy for the player to steal. When Pickpocketing targets are first located, they will be talking with another person.

Thugs
The thugs roaming the cities always have knives on hand which Altaïr can use as throwing knives. Each thug will have five throwing knifes that can be stolen. If more throwing knives are acquired while the hold is maxed, the game will give the player a warning: "You have acquired the maximum number of knives". Pickpocketing thugs is only available once the ability to carry throwing knives is gained. This happens in Memory Block 3 after killing Garnier de Naplouse.

When not to Pickpocket
There are various scenarios in which a pickpocket may fail, leading to a fight:

*The victim stops.
*The victim is facing Altair.
*The victim is looking behind himself.
*Altair is too close to his target.
*A guard is very close.

Achievement
On the Xbox 360 version there is an achievement for pickpocketing 200 knives:

Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio is taught by Paola (though he can pickpocket prior to this), and will steal money instead of throwing knifes. To do this, he must walk quickly in Low Profile, and use his empty hand to pickpocket when in close proximity with another person. However, if Ezio lingers too long in the area, he will be recognized and attacked, usually by males, though females will not hesitate to engage in a fight either. A single blow to the attacker will cause him/her to flee, however it is best not to draw attention. Stealing can award the player with anywhere from 3 to 50 florins at a time. The amount of florins Ezio will receive from pickpocketing can be roughly gleaned from the quality of clothing the intended victim is wearing; generally, the higher the quality of clothing, the more florins can be looted.

In addition, Ezio can loot unconscious or dead enemies for money; though this takes longer and leaves him open to attacks. Civilians will also openly scold the player for looting the dead. It is possible to get over 100 florins with this method, as well as items such as Throwing Knives, Medicine vials, Poison and Smoke bombs.

However, pickpocketing quickly becomes useless as the player progresses. This is due to the small amount gained, in comparison to the prices of items that can be bought, as well as the significantly larger profit achieved by investing in the Villa Auditore. Therefore, the only time it is really useful is during the very beginning of the game, before armed guards start showing up after Giovanni is arrested.

Pickpocketing is more noticeable in the first games since when beginning, the player will have their arms stretched out behind someone. This was removed in Assassin's Creed II, and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. If caught, then the civilians will still fight the player, and will flee if Ezio fights back or draws a weapon.

Pickpockets
Like Borgia Messengers, there are random pickpockets in the cities who are shown with an icon on the mini-map: a pouch with an exclamation mark; if one is in the player's line of sight, a white marker will appear over the pickpocket. A pickpocket can be tackled, grabbed, or attacked to obtain a small amount of money, or in AC: Brotherhood, money and a trading item. Also as the name suggests they will at times, attempt to steal money from the player. After stealing from the player, the pickpocket will begin to run away. They seem to outmatch ordinary Thieves at free running. Though while on rooftops they are still subjected to the same laws as Ezio is. So any archers which spot a pickpocket will begin to shoot arrows at him. In AC2, pickpockets have a large amount of health to withstand a guard's attacks, however in Brotherhood, their health is reduced. If guards are successful in killing the pickpocket, then they will start to attack Ezio. Also the money a pickpocket has can be looted from their dead body if killed by a guard. Killing one has no penalties or warnings or desynchronization, only an increase in notoriety.

Achievement
Similar to the one in Assassin's Creed, an achievement can be earned by pickpocketing:

width="64"|Icon
10
Bronze

Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, after bribing a Herald, the money can be stolen back from him. Though this contradicts the purpose of bribing, as it causes a slight increase in notoriety, the notoreity gain from pickpocketing is less than the amount removed by the Herald. If Ezio has 25% notoriety or more, the end result is a free decrease in notoreity. The Herald can also be killed, and the corpse can be looted to re-obtain the money.
