Hickey was approached by Haytham and Lee who reprimanded him for his recklessness. They informed him that they could not pardon his release due to the charges against him hence instead moved him to a more comfortable cell with better roam of the prison.

Connor was able to steal the prison warden's key and went to kill Hickey in his cell, but was ambushed by both Hickey and Lee who revealed that he will be trialed and executed for the murder of the warden and attempting to assassinate Washington. Hickey's plan not only framed Connor but would allow him an opportunity to murder Washington who would personally attend the execution.

Connor was rescued by the aid of the Assassins, forcing Hickey to make a desperate attempt to kill Washington as he rushed through the crowd. With Hickey's death and intent to kill Washington exposed, Connor was able to prove his innocence.

After [[Haytham Kenway]] assassinated a patron and stole his [[Grand Temple Key|amulet]] inside the {{Wiki|Royal Opera House}} at Covent Garden, Mills was assigned to follow Haytham on the ''Providence''. During this time, Mills painted barrels of cargo and threw them into the ocean as the ship progressed, in order to provide a trail that another ship could follow.

When Haytham was sent below decks by the captain, Mills was there to ambush him and tried to capture him. However, the far more experienced Haytham was able to kill Mills and escape.

==Biography==

Mills was the son of a sailor, and was already helping aboard boats with his father by the age of ten. At that age, he went on his first naval journey, aboard the ''Windward'', which traveled from London to Boston. As he aged, he continued working on merchant vessels and grew a reputation of a reliable, level-headed sailor. In 1752, he joined the crew of the ''Providence''.

===Aboard the Providence===
On the second day of the journey, Mills was atop the upper deck along with his two crew-mates, [[Hector Graves]] and Mr. Quill. When Haytham had ventured topside from his quarters, he had attempted to stop a fight between Graves and Kenway, although he was unsuccessful. After the fight was over, and when Samuel Smythe had arrived, Mills told him that the boys were just engaging in some "sport", to cover up the brawl before Haytham went with the ship's captain.

On the twenty-eighth day of the journey, Mills was drinking below deck near to where some of the crew were partaking in festivities. He had a brief conversation with Haytham, mostly concerning his two crew-members, and also spoke about how the crew had disliked the captain, who was cutting costs in ways the crew were unhappy about; Mills also revealed that he was attempting to hold back a possible mutiny. Later that night, he threw painted cargo overboard without being noticed.

===Death===
For the next thirteen days, Mills continued to throw painted cargo overboard, giving a following ship the trail of the ''Providence''. On the thirty-third day of the journey, the ship was attacked. When Haytham was sent below deck, Mills confronted him, handing him a sword and challenging him about the man he had killed, much to Haytham's surprise. After a short fight, Mills was killed by Haytham Kenway.

==Equipment and skills==
Mills was a relatively well-educated man, probably the most educated of the crew he served with. He was a very reliable sailor, working at the job for most of his life. While he carried no weapons, he knew how to use a blade well enough.

Mills was also relatively stealthy, being able to throw the ''Providence'''s cargo overboard without being caught, even by Haytham. Mills was also good at deception, managing to fool Haytham Kenway into believing that he was a friend, when in reality he wanted to kill the [[Templars|Templar]].

When he was six years old, Mario played an important role in the [[Battle of Anghiari]], where he alerted the condottiero Micheletto Attendolo to dust clouds over the road, which signaled a surprise advance on the [[Florence|Florentines]] by [[Milan|Milanese]] troops. Because of this, the attack was stopped, and the Florentines won the battle.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Under Mario's rule, Monteriggioni experienced a time of prosperity. Mario opened several shops and guilds in the city and greatly increased the city's defenses in order to withstand Florentine attacks. In 1454, he discovered a Florentine informant, [[Luciano Pezzati]], living in Monteriggioni. Alongside his own [[mercenaries]], Mario faced Pezzati and his men.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Mario dueled Luciano, barely defeating him, and had him dragged back to the Villa Auditore. From the Florentine spy, he discovered that the city was sending the condottiero [[Federico da Montefeltro]] to lead an [[Defense of Monteriggioni|attack on Monteriggioni]]. However, under Mario's leadership, the city was successfully defended and the invasion attempt ended in failure.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Eventually, Luciano Pezatti confessed the truth behind the siege, that the Florentines had attacked Monteriggioni in search of a [[Pieces of Eden|mysterious artifact]]. Curious as to what this mysterious artifact might be, Mario gathered his architects and historians, eventually discovering that, years before, the city well had once been drained and excavated.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Together with a miner and some of his men, Mario entered the well. While at first they did not find anything, Mario saw that the miner's flame was flickering while near the back wall, indicating the presence of an opening. Together, they pushed against the wall and found a hidden corridor, filled with various deadly traps. Members of their group lost their lives to the traps and Mario himself was caught by a swinging pendulum trap, which blinded him in the left eye and left him with a scar across his face.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

Finally, despite their injuries, the group finally found a wooden box within the well, from which a [[Shroud of Eden|presence]] told Mario's men that their ''"pain was temporary"'' and to ''"ignore it."'' Mario's men were certain that the presence would heal their wounds, but seeing as the box had been hidden for so long, Mario believed that there had to be a reason why it was there and that opening it would be unwise.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy" />

At this, Mario's men rebelled, and he was forced to strike them down. Mario was curious as to what the box might contain, but he promised himself not to open it. Instead, he carried it to the Villa Auditore, ignoring the artifact's offers for him to be healed. In 1476, Giovanni and two of his sons, [[Federico Auditore da Firenze|Federico]] and [[Petruccio Auditore da Firenze|Petruccio]], were executed under the pretext of treason, by order of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the [[Grand Master]] of the [[Templars|Templar Order]], the arch-enemies of the Assassins. After evacuating Florence to get to safety, Giovanni's remaining son Ezio escorted his mother [[Maria Auditore da Firenze|Maria]] and sister [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia]] out of the city and towards Monteriggioni.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Just as the three neared Monteriggioni, they were ambushed by [[Vieri de' Pazzi]] and his soldiers. In the middle of the fight between his nephew and the gang, Mario and his mercenaries arrived and saved them, before he insisted that they accompany him back to Monteriggioni. There, Mario told Ezio of his Assassin heritage, and that he needed to be trained so that he could properly fight and defeat the Templars, as well as protect his mother and sister.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Mario then started Ezio's training to become an Assassin, teaching him combat skills such as disarming and countering, military tactics, as well as how to taunt his enemy. In 1478, Ezio announced his decision to take Maria and Claudia to [[Spain]], against Mario's wishes. Due to his pride in his Assassin heritage, he stormed off, and left for [[San Gimignano]] before Ezio could rethink his decision.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Feeling guilty, Ezio followed Mario to San Gimignano to aid him in killing Vieri de' Pazzi. When Ezio successfully assassinated Vieri and began to abuse the body with insults, Mario stepped in and urged him to have respect towards the dead. He also explained to Ezio the importance of the Codex, and talked about a few of the pages that he and Giovanni had collected and translated over the years, before placing the page he had obtained from Vieri onto the [[Codex Wall]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

In 1488, Mario and some of the other leading Assassins met in [[Venice]], planning to acquire the "[[Ezio's Apple|Apple]]" from Rodrigo Borgia, knowing that it was to be delivered to him that day. When they found Rodrigo, they saw that they had been beaten to him by Ezio, who was locked in combat with Rodrigo and his men.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

The other Assassins rushed in to aid him, and after they had defeated Rodrigo's guards and almost killed Rodrigo himself, the Templar leader fled for his life, leaving the Apple behind in the process. Returning to Monteriggioni on horseback, Ezio and Mario made it back to the town by the afternoon of New Year's Day, 1500. As they neared the gates, Mario listened to Ezio as he told him about what had occurred in the Vault, though Mario advised him that -- as the foretold events were stated to happen in the future -- they need not worry about them for the time being.

Mario also told Ezio about the new cannons that he had had installed across the city battlements, after a cannonball startled his nephew when it crashed into the earth nearby.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

As the two rode into town, they were cheered for by the townspeople for their victory in the Vatican, and while Mario returned to the villa, Ezio began to enjoy the new abundance of time he had.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood" />

At dawn on January 2 -- Claudia's birthday -- Monteriggioni was besieged by the [[House of Borgia|Borgia]], under the command of [[Cesare Borgia]]. However, Mario became wounded during the battle, and as he attempted to flee back into the city, he collapsed within the town's gates. Mario dressed in the flamboyant style of the Italian nobility of the Renaissance, and sported long, dark hair that he slicked back neatly. He also owned a scar over his left eye, which he was blind in. He was known as a boisterous man and made no apologies for his passion for fighting and alcohol, though he could be quite cold towards someone when they showed an ignorant attitude.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

Mario cared deeply for his family, and was extremely proud of his Assassin heritage. From his letter to Giovanni and their differences in fighting styles, it can be assumed that he was often playfully critical of his brother, much like his nephew Federico was with Ezio. He also enjoyed a very good relationship with his nephew, and the two became very close, with Mario often treating Ezio like a son.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II" />

==Biography==
Doge Mocenigo was close to [[Carlo Grimaldi]], who was secretly a [[Templar]]. He did not fully trust Carlo, because he subtly attempted to recruit him to the Templar cause. However, when Grimaldi's superiors learned that the [[Assassin]] who had killed the [[House of Pazzi|Pazzi]] was in Venice and had killed [[Emilio Barbarigo]], they decided that there was no longer time for this plan to be carried out. At a Templar meeting, Carlo received the order to kill Mocenigo from [[Rodrigo Borgia]], [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Grand Master]] of the Templars.

[[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] overheard this meeting and broke into the [[Palazzo Ducale]] using [[Leonardo da Vinci]]'s [[Flying Machine|flying machine]]. However, Grimaldi had already poisoned Mocenigo with [[cantarella]]. As Mocenigo began to cough up blood, Ezio followed Carlo into the courtyard of the palace and killed him, avenging the Doge. Miraculously, the Doge managed to stumble into the courtyard, but, delirious from the poison, he yelled, "You....You killed me? You killed ME!?" before collapsing. As a result, Ezio was mistakenly labeled as Mocenigo's killer.

Following his death, he was replaced as Doge by [[Marco Barbarigo]].

Doge of Venice from 1478 to 1485, Giovanni Mocenigo accomplished two things.

He ended Venice's Turkish war through the Treaty of Constantinople in 1479. Basically the treaty was a huge white flag giving Turkey Venetian territory and an annual tribute of 10,000 ducats, in order to prevent the Turks from taking over Venice. Not exactly a win.

He killed the Pope. The end of [[Sixtus IV]] was nigh when Mocenigo attacked Ferrara, starting the Salt War. Ferrara had challenged Venice's ownership of several salt mines (apparently humans, like hamsters, need ample quantities of salt), so Venice used this pretext to enter into a war that was really about territorial expansion.[[File:Giovanni_mocenigo_beauty_render.jpg|thumb|left|Mocenigo's in-game render.]]

At first, the Pope fought alongside Venice, but then, once he realized Venice's territorial ambitions, switched sides. When Venice won, through the Treaty of Bagnolo, it gained significant territory, enlarging the Republic to the largest it would ever be.

When the Pope read the Treaty, he flew into a rage, and by the next day, he was dead.

Although, there were rumors that the Pope's death wasn't entirely caused by reading the Treaty, they have gone unproven.

==Real Life==

In real life, Mocenigo fought the Ottoman Turks, which resulted in the Treaty of Constantinople and the loss of territory. However, his battle with the duke of Ferrara yielded a great expansion of territory in Italy for Venice.

==Plot==
In the year 1521, the former Assassin Ezio Auditore retired to a villa in the countryside of Tuscany, with his wife [[Sofia Sartor|Sofia]] and children [[Marcello Auditore|Marcello]] and [[Flavia Auditore|Flavia]]. While Ezio wrote in his study, Sofia asked him to watch Flavia while she and Marcello visit his sister [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia]]. Shortly after, he left his study to tend their vineyards while Flavia played nearby the villa. In the midst of his harvest, he saw a stranger cloaked in black, talking to Flavia. Fearing the worst, Ezio hurriedly intercepted the stranger, though Flavia told him that she was no danger, as Ezio saw her necklace with the [[Assassin insignia]].

Later, the Assassin introduced herself as [[Shao Jun]], and then asked for Ezio's help in saving her people and [[Chinese Assassins|order]]. Ezio refused, stating that his time with the order is over, and asked that Jun leave, despite her pleas. Sofia however, bid that Jun should stay, seeing that she came a long way. Jun stays, while the family prepared to rest for the night. Ezio pondered about the time he had left while watching their children with Sofia. The two would then go to bed.

The next morning, Ezio inspected his villa to look for Shao Jun, and finds her in his study. Furious, Ezio told her to leave his study, and shortly after, told her to leave [[Italy]] entirely, stating that she's wasted her time looking for him. Shao Jun, reading a portion of what Ezio wrote in his study, asked him that she just wanted to understand what it takes to restore her order. Ezio informed her on why he was reluctant to help, stating that it could compromise his family. Afterwards, he would take her to [[Florence]] to help him in the grape harvest.

Ezio attended to his business while Shao Jun kept watch. Afterwards, Ezio would take her to the plaza of the [[Palazzo della Signoria]], where half of his family were killed. He would then lecture her on how an Assassin's line of work is done, before leaving back to his villa. In the midst of their departure, the two were intercepted by an assailant, who faced Shao Jun in combat. Afterwards, the two fled, as more of the armed men followed them.

As Ezio drove a carriage back to his villa, Shao Jun explained her past. She explained that it was her mentor's plan to meet with him, though her mentor was killed by the same men in [[Venice]]. The men were the Imperial soldiers of Emperor [[Jiajing]], who sought to recapture Shao Jun for her acts against his rule.

After arriving at the villa, Ezio tells Sofia that she and the children should stay at [[Machiavelli]]'s home, fearing that the assailants would come at their doorstep. After his family left, Ezio and Shao Jun stayed to prepare for the men. After giving a lecture to Shao Jun about how he reformed the order in both [[Rome]] and [[Constantinople]], Ezio advised her to rest while he stayed at the living room and kept watch.

The Imperial Soldiers arrived as expected, invading the Assassin's home. While Shao Jun fought some of the servants in the upper floor, Ezio fought with the others at the lower floor, defeating three of them. Seeing the [[Mounted cannons|cannon]]-wielding brute readying to fire at Jun, Ezio hurriedly made his way to the upper floor to intercept the soldiers and save her from the cannon's fire, which he does so successfully. Afterwards, both he and Jun would jump out of a window and onto the open field. There, both of them fought the cannon soldier, and after a tough fight, managed to defeat him.

The day after, Ezio would bid Shao Jun farewell, as the latter thanked him for all his help. Before leaving, Ezio gave Jun a small chest, commenting that it can help her some day, though said that she should open it only when she loses direction. Just then, government [[Guards|guards]] approached Ezio's villa. Ezio bids that Shao Jun should leave before they see her. She would then leave, while Ezio talked with the guards.

Some time after, Ezio finished writing in his study. Sofia then informed him that she and Flavia were leaving for Florence. Ezio decided to come with them. There, Ezio sat down at a nearby bench while the pair bought some groceries. As Ezio watched, a young man would sit down with him and berate the women of Florence.

Despite his disrespectful demeanor, the man bid that Ezio should have courage, and advised him to rest before leaving his company. Ezio, as he looked on his wife and daughter, smiled. The two looked back, though with an expression of distraught rather than happiness.

Ezio Auditore passed away where he sat at the age of 65. Left behind by him in his study was a letter addressed to Sofia. Written there was:

After Ezio was successful in his objective, he took Claudia and Maria to travel to Monteriggioni with him, where their uncle Mario Auditore owned a villa.<ref name="AC2"/>

Claudia and Maria made their way to the [[Tiber Island headquarters|Assassin headquarters]] on [[Tiber Island]] in Rome, where they met with Niccolò. Niccolò suspected Ezio to be visiting the [[courtesans]] at the Rosa in Fiore, and redirected the women to the brothel.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Conversing with the courtesans, Claudia and Maria were joined by Ezio, who had just come back from a failed attempt to save the brothel's owner, [[Madonna Solari]], from slave traders. Without anyone to lead the courtesans, Claudia offered to take over the ownership of the brothel, much to Ezio's dissatisfaction.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

On Maria's request, Ezio agreed, and Claudia and her courtesans started retrieving intelligence for the Assassin Order from the Borgia, beginning to attain information on the location of Caterina Sforza. Meeting with Ezio and the other guild leaders at the Assassin hideout with the necessary information, the Assassins decided that their next step was to assassinate Rodrigo and Cesare Borgia.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Claudia continued to lead the courtesans for the coming years, and in 1503 she joined the Assassins at the hideout again, where she revealed that a senator named [[Egidio Troche]] was closely related with Cesare's "[[Juan Borgia the Elder|Banker]]". Claudia pointed Ezio in the senator's direction, and set her courtesans to follow Ezio when he went to assassinate the Banker, taking his money with them to the Rosa in Fiore.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

However, these courtesans were followed by Borgia guards, and they infiltrated the brothel. Claudia armed herself with a knife, and single-handedly took out all the guards, right before Ezio entered the brothel in hopes of saving her. Ezio was amazed by Claudia's efforts, and in August 1503, he called Claudia to the hideout again.<ref name="Brotherhood"/>

Entering the ceremony hall, Ezio inducted Claudia into the Assassin Order in the presence of the other Assassins, while Ezio himself was promoted to Mentor and leader of the Italian Assassins. The next year, Maria grew weak and started talking of Giovanni, Federico and Petruccio again. Some time later, Maria died due to illness. Bruno pretended to work for Niccolò, and directed both him and Ezio to where Claudia was being held captive, saying it was a secret Templar hideout. Niccolò and Ezio were able to overcome the Borgia fanatics and rescue Claudia, but she eventually chose to resign as the ''madame'' of the Rosa in Fiore. Ezio continued to chase after Cesare, and eventually managed to kill the Templar Grand Master during the [[Siege of Viana]] in 1507. Returning to Rome from Spain, Ezio asked Machiavelli to send Claudia back to Rome as soon as he would reach Florence. Claudia returned to Rome some time later, having grown to love the city more than her home of Florence.<ref name="Brotherhood novel"/>

Claudia continued to serve the Assassins, acting as an advisor to Ezio. At times, she was also seen to be immature, complaining petulantly after Mario assigned her to manage Monteriggioni's finances.<ref name="AC2"/>

Regardless, Claudia was quite capable of handling and keeping track of the town's bankroll, as well as of her brother's purchases and earnings.<ref name="AC2"/> Her capability in business management again became useful when she volunteered - despite Ezio's initial protest - to take over the brothel in Rome. Though he arrived too late to save the Duke, Giovanni was able to eliminate some of his murderers whilst the Duke’s bodyguards killed the rest. With all the assassins dead, Giovanni searched the corpse of [[Giovanni Andrea Lampugnani]], and found a pouch of coins stamped with the seal of [[Venice]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage"/>

Arriving in Venice, Giovanni infiltrated the [[Basilica di San Marco]], and eavesdropped on a group of men conversing in a nearby room. Before leaving, Maria reminded her husband that their son, Ezio, who was watching them from behind a nearby haystack, was becoming suspicious of his banker father having to leave the [[Palazzo Auditore|Palazzo]] at night so often. Giovanni promised that he would speak with him soon, and then left.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage"/>

Arriving at the meeting, Uberto falsely claimed that Father [[Antonio Maffei]] had been unable to decrypt the letter, thus, the only course of action was for Giovanni to deliver the letter himself. Giovanni agreed, and headed for Rome with a copy of the letter in hand.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage"/>

In Rome, he delivered the letter, and followed it until it reached the hands of Rodrigo Borgia. Giovanni followed Rodrigo into [[Basilica di San Pietro]], where the two finally exchanged words. Rodrigo remarked his respect for the Assassin's skills, and offered him the chance to join the Templar Order, and live to see the "[[New World Order|new world]]."<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage"/>

Giovanni refused, and was subsequently attacked by a number of Rodrigo's henchmen. Despite being heavily outnumbered, he prevailed, although a [[Throwing knives|knife thrown]] by Rodrigo wounded him gravely, and allowed the Templar the opportunity to escape.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage"/>

Returning home, Giovanni had his wife tend his wound, and confessed that he feared the assassination of the Duke of Milan had only been the beginning of a much wider conspiracy. Before he could go on however, the two were interrupted by their son Federico, who warned that Father Maffei had arrived with armed guards. Asking his son to provide him cover, Giovanni slipped out of the palazzo through a secret passage within the fireplace.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Lineage"/>

At some point after this, Giovanni found evidence suggesting [[Francesco de' Pazzi]] had committed murder, and he thus had Uberto Alberti arrest him. As a result, Francesco's son [[Vieri de' Pazzi|Vieri]] developed an intense rivalry with Ezio Auditore.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Following a brawl the two had on the [[Ponte Vecchio]], Giovanni scolded his son for his behavior, although he noted that it reminded him of himself when he was younger. He then tasked Ezio with delivering a letter to Lorenzo, but was surprised to learn that Lorenzo had left the city for a short while. Undeterred, Giovanni had Ezio deliver several more letters, as well as pick up a letter from a [[Pigeon coops|pigeon coop]] near the [[Piazza della Signoria]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Whilst his son was away, however, armed guards sent by Uberto suddenly invaded the Palazzo Auditore and arrested Giovanni and his two other sons, taking them to be imprisoned in the tower of the Piazza della Signoria. Before long, Ezio had managed to climb the clock tower, where Giovanni told his son to empty his chest in the room behind the fireplace, and retrieve the evidence exonerating him and his family. Ezio did so, and delivered the evidence to Uberto that night.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

The next day however, Giovanni was shocked to find Uberto and Rodrigo Borgia together, with Uberto denying ever receiving any evidence. Giovanni and his sons were then [[Auditore execution|sentenced to death]] on the grounds of treason. Having prepared for a turn of events similar to what ultimately happened, Giovanni had arranged for his live-in servant [[Annetta]] to take his wife and daughter to her sister's establishment, where they would be safe. There, Annetta's sister [[Paola]], a [[courtesan]] Giovanni had previously represented in court, and introduced into the Assassin's Order, provided Ezio with some basic training in blending, and gave him the skills necessary to execute his revenge on Uberto Alberti before he left the city.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

When Ezio arrived in [[Monteriggioni]], his uncle Mario was shocked to discover that his brother had never told Ezio of his Assassin heritage, or that Giovanni himself had indeed been an Assassin. Giovanni was trained from birth in the Assassin ways, alongside his brother Mario. Despite this mutual upbringing, the two parted ways later in life due to a philosophical divide over how to live their lives. Giovanni, who had been tutored in banking, preferred to live a calmer life, whereas Mario wished to live a life with more action. This divide eventually led to the two brothers losing touch with one another; to such a degree that upon his arrival in Monteriggioni in 1476, Ezio Auditore was unaware who exactly his uncle was.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

The divide also affected how Giovanni brought up his children, with none of them explicitly knowing of their heritage; however, although his children were unaware of his true nature, Giovanni did allow others to know of it, trusting in their secrecy. Among these were many of Giovanni's contacts within the [[mercenaries]], [[courtesans]] and [[thieves]] guilds, who knew the Assassin by name, suggesting a certain degree of mutual-trust between them.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Despite never telling his children of their heritage, Giovanni did work to prepare them for life as an Assassin. By the time of his death, he had already begun preparing his eldest son, Federico, in the Assassin ways, and was preparing to begin training Ezio as well. Giovanni was a skilled warrior, and proved able to hold his own against a number of opponents in combat with relative ease, armed only with a sword and his hidden blade. Lorenzo was the most brilliant of Cosimo de' Medici's grandsons, and was already a successful diplomat as a child. His father, Piero the Gouty, was ill and absent from Lorenzo's and his brother Giuliano's lives, but managed to significantly increase the number of those opposed to the Medici reign of Florence. Lorenzo's mother, Lucrezia Tornabuoni, was a poet, and managed to instill in him a love of art and beauty that would greatly influence his adult lifestyle. Like his brother, he enjoyed horseback riding and jousting, but spent more time studying art and literature. Lorenzo was Piero's and Lucrezia's third child, and his brother Giuliano was the fourth. Lorenzo de' Medici was ruling over Florence, but several parties had conspired against the Medici family, trying to overthrow and move themselves into a position of power in their place. Lorenzo assigned [[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], a close ally and an [[Assassins|Assassin]], to investigate.

Giovanni successfully captured one of [[Rodrigo Borgia]]'s men, and handed him over to Lorenzo for interrogation. The man revealed an [[Assassination of Galeazzo Maria Sforza|assassination plot]] to kill [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza]], the Duke of [[Milan]] and a powerful ally of Lorenzo's. Lorenzo then sent Giovanni to Milan in order to prevent the assassination. Unfortunately, Giovanni failed, and the assassination was successful; though Giovanni did manage to retrieve an encrypted paper from the thug that led the assassination.<ref name="ACL">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>

On April 26th 1478, [[Francesco de' Pazzi]] unsuccessfully tried to [[Pazzi Conspiracy|assassinate]] Lorenzo and his brother Giuliano, striving to become the ruler of Florence. In a frenzy, he leaped on Giuliano and stabbed him nineteen times, killing him. Lorenzo was wounded by two of the other conspirators, [[Stefano da Bagnone]] and [[Antonio Maffei]], but rapidly drew his sword in a defensive attempt to stop them. He was quickly joined by [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], the son of the late Giovanni, and the two men fought of Francesco and the Pazzi guards. After emerging victorious from the battle, they proceeded onward to the [[Palazzo Medici]] to seek sanctuary. With the gate opened by Lorenzo's servant [[Poliziano]], Lorenzo was safely tended to inside his palazzo, and Ezio continued onward to assassinate Francesco de' Pazzi on Lorenzo's request.<ref name="AC2"/>

Soon after, Ezio met with Lorenzo on the [[Ponte Vecchio]]. There, Lorenzo told him how he had been saved from drowning when he was six years old by one of Ezio's kinsmen. He also gave Ezio the names of several Pazzi conspirators, who Ezio left to kill.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1479, Ezio returned to Florence and happened past the [[Palazzo Medici]]. Noticing that a red cross had been painted on one of the palazzo's doors, Ezio went inside, and found the corpses of some of Lorenzo's servants in the courtyard. He soon realized that Pazzi hitmen were searching for Lorenzo, who had gone into hiding. Ezio battled his way through the palazzo, killed the Pazzi soldiers and found Lorenzo hiding in one of his treasure rooms. Lorenzo once again thanked him, and as a reward, permitted Ezio to take whatever he wanted from the treasure room. After claiming his reward, Ezio left to continue his hunt for [[Jacopo de' Pazzi]].<ref name="AC2"/>

With the new police force, Emilio kept the streets safe from crime and managed to eliminate any opposition or competition.

In 1480, Emilio attended a meeting within an [[Antico Teatro Romano|outdoor Roman theater]] in [[Tuscany]], organized and conducted by [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Templar Grand Master]] [[Rodrigo Borgia]]. The gathering was meant for the [[Pazzi Conspiracy|Pazzi conspirators]], but the only conspirator present was [[Jacopo de' Pazzi]].

The [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze|Ezio Auditore]] learned of this meeting, and tailed Jacopo to the theater. Once Ezio reached the meeting, he hid near a large column at the back of the theater, and eavesdropped.

During the meeting, Jacopo spoke about his failure in the plot to kill the Medici in [[Florence]] with Rodrigo and Emilio. Jacopo attempted to blame Emilio, claiming he did not supply them with quality weapons.

However, Rodrigo soon intervened, shouting at Jacopo, and eventually stabbing him with a [[stiletto]]. Jacopo then pleaded to be spared, before Emilio shoved him to the ground, laughing sadistically.

With Jacopo injured on the stage floor, Rodrigo brandished his blade, and thrust it through Jacopo's neck. Cleaning off his bloodied blade, Rodrigo called out to Ezio, and had his guards seize the Assassin. Rodrigo told them to kill Ezio, before both he and Emilio departed from the theater.

By 1481 in Venice, Emilio had taken control of [[San Polo District|San Polo]], the mercantile district, and was ruling it with an iron fist. He charged the merchants rent, and even had his guards destroy their stand if it was not paid promptly. He also had his guards patrol there often, to ensure the district remained under his control.

He also provided weapons to the other Templars in Florence, and was able to maintain a large role in Templar affairs. He resided in a large palace within San Polo, called the [[Palazzo della Seta]], which was heavily guarded with a large iron fence, vigilant [[archers]], and fierce [[brutes]].

His oppression over the district attracted the attention of the [[Venice Thieves Guild|Venetian Thieves Guild]] which was based in the same district. The [[thieves]], led by [[Antonio de Magianis]], then allied themselves with Ezio and together they began to work to end Emilio's tyranny. The allies freed their captured men, killed the traitorous thieves who had been bribed by Emilio, and acquired the [[armor]] of Emilio's archers. Eventually, on 11 September 1485, four years after starting their preparations, the thieves believed it was time to strike. Ezio made his way onto the rooftops of the Palazzo, and began to observe his target.

Spying on the meeting, Ezio noticed Emilio meeting with fellow Templar and member of the Council of Ten, [[Carlo Grimaldi]]. During their discussion, Carlo informed Emilio that Ezio was targeting him, and that he should stay vigilant of the Assassin. Carlo also told Emilio of a meeting that was to take place three days from then at the [[Santo Stefano]], which had been organized by Rodrigo. Before leaving, Carlo advised Emilio to leave Seta and reside somewhere less conspicuous.

After his meeting with Carlo, Emilio ordered one of his men to fetch his boat and to begin loading it when it had arrived. While waiting for his boat, Ezio managed to make his way into the courtyard, and assassinated Emilio with his [[hidden blade]]. During his final moments, Emilio claimed that he had sought unity, stability, and order, but that this progress demanded sacrifice.

Emilio was an oppressive and demanding man, making sure the merchants in San Polo paid him rent. When they did not, however, he had their stands destroyed. He also was a man who took pride in his accomplishments and success, claiming he had worked too hard to be defeated by Ezio and the Assassins.

Emilio was also critical and argumentative with his fellow Templars, often blaming them, rather than himself, when plans failed. He called Jacopo de' Pazzi a coward at their Tuscan meeting, and blamed him for their failure in Florence, though Jacopo had only a minor role in the conspiracy. He also argued with fellow Templar Carlo Grimaldi, even when Carlo was attempting to warn him.

In terms of attire, Emilio dressed as a member of Venetian nobility, wearing a large set of bluish-green and yellow robes that extended from his neck to his ankles. He also wore an orante hat on his head, symbolizing his wealth. On the back of his outfit hung a thin dark cape to match his robes, which extended to his knee level.

His family doted upon him as the elder of two sons, and everything that he wanted - ships, gold, jewelry - was given to him.

This greed was demonstrated by his later thievery of [[Carlotta Moro]], another man's wife.

Once a friend of his bodyguard and attendant, [[Dante Moro]], Marco became attracted to Dante's wife Carlotta, and orchestrated an attempt on his former friend's life in order to win her for himself. Dante was stabbed three times in his torso, and once in the cranium by the men Marco had sent to kill him.

Dante escaped his killers, and managed to survive the near-fatal wounds. Though he did not die as Marco had hoped, the stab wound in his skull left his brain damaged and caused him to lose his higher levels of cognitive thinking, reducing Dante to little more than a drone.

Marco forced Dante to renounce his marriage, and proceeded to make Dante his personal slave. Marco then married Dante's ex-wife, and made her his own, though she never lost hope for Dante's recovery.

Like most of the Barbarigo family, Marco became involved with "''the Spaniard''" [[Rodrigo Borgia]], and his plot to take over the Venetian government. In 1485, after the assassination of his relative Emilio Barbarigo, Marco, Dante Moro, Silvio Barbarigo and [[Carlo Grimaldi]] met with Rodrigo to plan the assassination of the current Doge [[Giovanni Mocenigo]].

Before Rodrigo arrived, those present argued over who would be appointed Doge after the successful assassination. Rodrigo caught them arguing and reprimanded them for it, before announcing that Marco would take Doge Mocenigo's place.

Unknown to them at the time, the [[Assassins|Assassin]] [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]] eavesdropped on this meeting, and discovered the Barbarigo's allegiance and plans. After the death of Doge Mocenigo, whom Ezio failed to rescue, Marco was appointed as the next Doge, and declared Ezio an enemy of Venice for the murder of his predecessor.

After securing his seat as Doge, Marco spent most of his time in Venice hidden in the [[Palazzo Ducale]], never to emerge. However, Ezio gained entrance to Marco's private party during [[Carnevale]] using a [[Golden Mask]] he had stolen from Dante, which allowed the bearer immediate, unquestioned entrance to the party.

However, after Dante discovered the theft, he alerted the city guards, and joined them in the search. Despite the guard's attempts to locate him, Ezio remained invisible amongst his hired [[courtesans]], until Marco emerged from his boat to celebrate Carnevale with his "fellow man."

The party was short-lived as Ezio shot Marco down where he stood, using the [[Hidden Gun|hidden gun]]. After his death, Marco's brother [[Agostino Barbarigo]] took his brother's place as Doge; unlike Marco, Agostino was sympathetic to the Assassin cause.

Marco was of medium height and stature, though he was often slightly hunched, giving his body an elderly and weak appearance. He had long white hair, thinning with age, and a wispy beard of the same color.

He generally wore the same attire in public which included a hat to hide his thinning hair, a white ermine mantle, and very rich clothing that reflected his noble stature.

His fingers and neck were laden with jewelry, and his soft palms and fingers portrayed the comfortable lifestyle he lived; the thick layers of clothes barely hiding an elderly, overweight man.

==Personality and characteristics==
Marco was, at heart, a cowardly man. He hid inside of his Palazzo when his fellow Templars' lives were threatened, and had a rival murdered through deception rather than challenging him honorably in public.

When finally forced to publicize himself, Marco stayed aboard a ship as his own party thrived on land. Ezio was forced to use his hidden gun on Marco instead of using stealth, his favored method of assassination. This may show Marco as a cunning foe rather than a coward; he very nearly stayed out of reach of the Assassin.

The man's intelligence was never lacking, and Marco manipulated events around himself to get what he wanted. A whim was enough to send him on a murderous rampage - always using his hired men though. By having Dante attacked, he was able to win the man's wife and get a tenaciously attentive bodyguard in a single event.

Marco never seemed very aware of his surroundings, and did not recognize the warning signs of his predecessor being murdered in his own Palazzo. His greed and vanity was pronounced through bright, expensive clothing and layers of jewelry that were openly displayed to incur the envy of the poor people of Venice.
