===Haytham's arrival===
Before Haytham arrived in the colonies the [[Colonial Assassins]] under [[Mentor]] [[Achilles Davenport]] controlled the Atlantic coast of North America. They used [[gangs]] as enforcers, and ruled a number of [[forts]] and settlements. The Assassins also possessed an established network of spies and allies. They dominated the Templars in the colonies. In 1752, [[Lawrence Washington]], [[Samuel Smith]], and [[James Wardrop]], all high-ranking Templars, were assassinated after stealing the [[Precursor box]] and [[Voynich manuscript]] from the Assassins in [[Haiti]], following an [[1751 Port-au-Prince earthquake|earthquake]] a year prior.<ref name="ACRG">''[[Assassin's Creed: Rogue]]''</ref>

In 1754, following Haytham's arrival in the New World, and the formation of an independent Colonial Rite, the resurgent Templars quickly came into conflict with the well-established Assassins. Beginning as a proxy war between the Templars and [[mercenaries]] recruited by the Assassins, the conflict escalated when the two factions sided with opposing [[Europe]]an powers during the [[Seven Years' War]].<ref name="ACRG"/>

===Turning the tide===
From 1757 onward, [[Shay Cormac]], a former Assassin, helped the Templars track down and kill several of his former comrades, including the high ranking Assassins [[Kesegowaase]], [[Hope Jensen]], and [[Louis-Joseph Gaultier, Chevalier de la Vérendrye|Chevalier de la Vérendrye]]. In addition to his former colonial brothers, Shay also eliminated [[Adéwalé]], a famous member of the [[Caribbean Assassins|Caribbean branch]] of the Assassin Brotherhood.<ref name="ACRG"/>

Shay also used his ship, the ''[[Morrigan]]'', to cripple the Assassin navy. Among the ships which fell victim to his actions were Adéwalé's vessel, the ''[[Experto Crede]]'', and the ''[[Gerfaut]]'' captained by Chevalier de la Vérendrye. Shay also managed to sink the ''[[Storm Fortress]]'', the flagship of the Assassin navy.<ref name="ACRG"/>

Furthermore, Shay also eliminated seven Assassin-allied gangs in [[New York City|New York]], liberated several forts in the [[River Valley]] and along the Atlantic coast, intercepted several Assassins during their [[Assassination contracts|missions]], and killed a number of [[stalkers]] sent after him personally, weakening the Assassin presence further.<ref name="ACRG"/>

In 1760, in a battle at a Precursor Temple in the Arctic, the Brotherhood's leadership was broken. Its rising star [[Liam O'Brien]] was killed, and its Mentor Achilles Davenport was crippled by Haytham. Thereafter the balance of power in the Colonies tipped in favor of the Templars, and soon the Brotherhood was on the brink of destruction. Confident that he was no longer a threat, the Templars spared Achilles' life, on the condition that the Assassins stop searching for [[First Civilization]] sites.<ref name="ACRG"/>

In 1763, three years after the Assassins' defeat at the Arctic, the Templars launched their final attack on the [[Davenport Homestead]], killing all the remaining Assassins, with the exception of Achilles and [[Robert Faulkner]]. Convinced that the lone Mentor no longer posed any threat, the Templars spared Achilles' life once again, this time on the condition that he give up his life as an Assassin.<ref name="AC3">''[[Assassin's Creed III]]''</ref>

==Biography==
In 1774, while the Carrolls were visiting the de la Serres to voice the worrying of the foreign rites concerning the reformist faction of the French Rite, May taunted [[Élise de la Serre]], because as a ten year-old, May had been told of her Templar destiny while the six year-old Élise hadn't.

In 1788, Elise came to [[London]], asking the Carrolls for help in order to investigate the assassination attempt on her mother a decade before. Oblivious to the fact that it was the Carrolls who had hired [[Ruddock]] in order to kill [[Julie de la Serre|Julie]], who was a moderate reformist but had the ears of her husband, Élise accepted their bargain: they would search for Ruddock, while she tried to obtain the letters of [[Haytham Kenway]] from his sister, [[Jennifer Scott]].

Élise obtained the letters and, after reading them, decided that the [[Assassins]] and Templars needed to work together. She found Ruddock by herself, allowing him to flee because she thought that the Carrolls were trying to silence him. Soon afterwards, Mr. Carroll obtained a pack of decoy letters, which he passed onto May, who swiftly burned them. Mr. Carroll said that even though [[Grand Master]] Kenway was a great Templar, his ideas about the Assassins were blasphemy.

Upon hearing Élise defending Kenway's view, he said that she was too dangerous to be left alive, and the Carrolls, along with their men, readied themselves to kill her. Élise was first given a chance to duel May, but she stabbed her through the back of the neck before she even had the chance to draw her sword. She used the Carrolls' shock to flee, but also attracted the hatred of the Carrolls on herself, and by extension, the mistrust of the British Rite. Various individuals would be hired to assassinate Élise and those close to her, such as her Templar mentor [[Frederick Weatherall]], and even her serving girl [[Hélène]].
