Sages are born normally with their own personality and memories but they also possess the memories of Aita. After Aita, who had volunteered and died after being placed within a First Civilization machine in an attempt to save the world from a [[Toba Catastrophe|solar flare]], Juno sought to somehow save him, so that they might reunite some day. To this end, Juno later manipulated the genetic code of human DNA, implanting a hidden trigger that would randomly activate and alter the genetic makeup of the individual, changing their appearance and imbuing them with Aita's memories.<ref name="AC4"/>

A Sage's blood is required to open the passage to the [[Observatory]], hidden in [[Long Bay]], [[Jamaica]], through inserting it into a [[Blood vials|blood vial]]. The [[Mayans|Mayan]] civilization and [[Taíno]] people worshiped the Sages, and the Mayan ruins in [[Tulum]], [[Mexico]] contained a statue resembling a Sage's head.<ref name="AC4"/>

Sages have been recorded all throughout human history, in numerous regions around the world. According to [[Bahlam]], an [[Assassins|Assassin]] and the father of [[Ah Tabai]], there had been at least eight recorded Sages by the late 1600s, although several Abstergo Entertainment researchers later concluded that the real count was likely much higher.<ref name="AC4"/>

When Juno was freed of her digital prison by Desmond Miles in 2012 and projected her presence in the web, the Sage of that era, John Standish began to search a suitable host for "his love". Discovering an Abstergo Employee that suited Juno's need, Standish was however killed before the completion of his plan and his body was taken by Abstergo.<ref name="AC4"/>

After the attack of Standish in 2013, the Templars began a race to find the Sages through history, planning to recolt the DNA in their remains in order to sequence the complete genome of Homo Sapiens Divinius. Discovering the [[Phoenix Project]], the Assassin Brotherhood then recruited several Animus users in order to thwart the efforts of Abstergo and find the Sages first.<ref name="ACU"/>
