Arquebusiers were firearm-wielding soldiers. Similar to archers and crossbowmen, they patrolled rooftops, protected high-profile locations, and guarded noteworthy targets.

Though arquebusiers did not have as great a range as crossbowmen, what they lacked in distance, they made up for in power. Their shots dealt significant damage to targets and enemy armor.

Characteristics
Like crossbowmen, arquebusiers did not carry melee weapons to supplement their long-ranged attacks. Instead, they would only back away and resume shooting if engaged at close quarters, using the arquebus itself to block melee attacks.

Aside from their rifles, arquebusiers carried several bags across their belts, likely containing gunpowder and lead projectiles to serve as ammunition.

Like all other guards, the color of their uniform indicated their allegiances; with red signifying them as soldiers of the Borgia, blue of French, and yellowish-green for those of Viana.

History
By 1500, arquebusiers served the Papacy, and supported Cesare Borgia's forces during the siege of Monteriggioni. A contingent of them were able to seriously wound Ezio Auditore da Firenze in the shoulder and abdomen, tipping the attack in their favor.

Throughout Rome in the 16th century, arquebusiers could be found guarding Borgia towers, as well as rooftops around the Pantheon and Castra Praetoria. They could also be seen patrolling the streets of the Antico or Campagna districts in pairs.

Around 1503, Baltasar de Silva organized a division of arquebusiers as an ambush. He lured the traitor Fiora Cavazza into a warehouse, in which the arquebusiers were hidden; however, a team of Assassins were able to shoot down the enemies and rescue her.

Later that year, a number of French arquebusiers under Charles de la Motte were key factors in a trap set by Charles and Cesare Borgia for the Assassins of Rome. Though the Assassin apprentice team of Francesco Vecellio was able to kill several arquebusiers with bows, this broke their cover, and led to them being overwhelmed by the combined Templar forces.

Though the Assassin team escaped to the roof of an inn, another contingent of arquebusiers surrounded and fired upon them from nearby buildings, wiping virtually all of them out.

Arquebusiers continued to be used by the Templar forces in around 1511. Leandros made use of them as protection in a stronghold near Masyaf, while the Byzantines used them to protect any Assassin Dens they captured in Constantinople, as well as the rooftops of Cappadocia.

Unlike in earlier years, other than patrolling rooftops, arquebusiers also stationed themselves in reinforced outposts, which protected them from close-range or melee attacks. However, they were still vulnerable to ranged weapons.

Trivia
*Similarly to enemy crossbows, it is impossible to pick up the dropped weapon of an arquebusier. The weapon will also disappear shortly after moving out of the camera's view.
*Similar to Papal Guards and Brutes, arquebusiers are more often encountered during story missions.
*In Assassins Creed: BrotherhoodArquebusiers can be found patrolling rooftops of buildings that surround the Pantheon in Rome.
Crossbowmen were guards armed with crossbows. They patrolled and defended the rooftops in a fashion similar to the archers, and were thus able to catch sight of Ezio from a distance.
However, unlike archers who drew their swords if Ezio came too close, they instead also used their crossbows for defensive melee combat, and would still fire a bolt at Ezio even at close range.

Crossbowmen were an annoyance particularly when encountered in groups, as crossbow bolts moved faster than normal arrows, and significantly hindered rooftop travel by causing Ezio to fall and take damage. Crossbowmen were skilled marksmen, and were capable of damaging armor with their shots.

When investigating the sight of an Assassin, the crossbowmen tried to follow him, therefore stealth and/or a quick, powerful weapon (i.e.: crossbow) was recommended to avoid a fight and diminish the chances of getting caught.

Trivia
* The Crossbows used by crossbowmen differ from Ezio's. The wood they are made of is lighter and they do not have the eagle shaped metal on the front.
* While looting the corpses of crossbowmen, occasionally bullets can be found.
* Crossbowmen also appear in Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles and the memory, The Mentor's Keeper despite historical inaccuracies. The ones in Altaïr's Chronicles also carry swords unlike in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
*If a Crossbowman spot a pickpocket on the rooftop, he will hunt the pickpocket down and ignore Ezio until the target is dead (or manage to escape)
Sorry, am I in your way?!

Vigilantes were groups of men that would aid the Assassins by distracting or grabbing guards pursuing them.

They were often recruited by saving certain citizens, or by reclaiming a Roman city district from the Borgia.

History
High Middle Ages
Vigilante groups were usually made up of the friends or family members of female citizens, who had been rescued from harassing guards. The rescued citizen would often thank the Assassin, and assure him that their husband (or friends or neighbors) would be sure to hear of his kind deed.

Should the Assassin pass by the group of vigilantes when not being pursued, they would greet him, and say such things as "Thank you for saving my daughter," or "If you need me, I am here."

Renaissance
During Ezio Auditore da Firenze's attempts to retake Rome, several vigilantes began to support his actions. After he destroyed Borgia Towers, small groups of vigilantes would gather in the district, shouting insults at nearby guards, and ready to aid Ezio at any time.

Aside from directly assaulting the guards, they could also hide him from them. After successfully helping Ezio against an attack, they would disperse from the area, and only gather again at a later time.

Though vigilantes did not address Ezio should he walk past, they would often speak complaints against the Borgia, and praise for the Assassins.

In Constantinople, when Ezio stirred a riot at the Harbor of Theodosius, several vigilantes chose to fight against the Janissaries. Though unarmed, or wielding only pitch forks, many risked their lives to protest the tyranny of the local guards.

Trivia
*A guard held by a vigilante cannot move or defend himself, allowing you to easily kill or shake the pursuer.
*Vigilantes can hold guards for around five seconds before the guard struggles free, although it is possible for the guard to be grabbed again immediately afterward.
*Any guard regardless of health or type can be grappled by vigilantes. Even some assassination targets are vulnerable to them.
*If all of your pursuers are killed with the assistance of vigilantes, the group will disperse and cannot be used again until the area reloads.
*Vigilantes cannot be killed with any weapon, but will die if being hit by a collapsing scaffold (Brotherhood)
