The iconic weapon of the Assassins, the Hidden Blade is a weapon used for both stealth assassinations and regular combat. It is their most versatile weapon, with multiple upgrades and forms of use.

History
Third Crusade
The Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad initially wielded a hidden blade, however, due to his failure in retrieving the Apple of Eden, and his breaking of all three tenets of the Creed, he was demoted to a Novice by Al Mualim, and was stripped of his weapons. At his first promotion to Rank 2, however, he earned back his hidden blade, along with his sword.

Aside from assassinations, the hidden blade was also used in a variety of investigations. For missions given by informants, wherein Altaïr was asked to stealthily assassinate a number of targets, he could only make use of his hidden blade or throwing knives in order to remain undetected. Additionally, after successfully interrogating a target, Altaïr was forced to kill them so they could not reveal their plans, and did so by burying his hidden blade into their stomach.

Although the blade was used mainly for stealth, it could also be used in open conflict, but only for countering enemy attacks.

Renaissance
In his own time as an Assassin, Giovanni Auditore also wielded a hidden blade, albeit one that had been adapted to the change of the times. As outlined in the Codex, the revised blade had been designed by Altaïr so that the Assassins, who he intended to go undercover, could not be identified by their lack of a ring finger.

Furthermore, the mechanism did not require a wrist "flick" to extend the blade, thus the user could retract the blade without any wrist or hand movement. Additionally, as pictured, the weapon could be used with a clenched fist, although Giovanni is one of the few known Assassins to use it in that manner.

While there is a rotating wheel atop the rear portion of the mechanism's housing (one which turns upon releasing or retracting the blade), its function has not been identified, and there are no known schematics or explanations for the mechanism.

Ezio Auditore inherited the hidden blade from his father, along with his Assassin's robe, the night before the Auditore execution. However, the blade was broken due to Giovanni's last fight in Rome against Rodrigo Borgia and his men, thus Paola suggested that Ezio ask Leonardo da Vinci to repair it. Leonardo was able to do so, with the aid of the schematics detailed in the Codex.

Through other Codex pages, Leonardo was able to provide Ezio with a variety of upgrades (detailed below), including a second hidden blade. Ezio made use of these blades for the majority of his assassinations, and was also able to wield them in battle.

Rome
Now I can kill double the guards.
Though Ezio possessed the same two hidden blades until 1499, during the Fall of Monteriggioni, he lost most of his weapons, and was only able to salvage the blade and bracer of his father. Upon his arrival in Rome, he was equipped with a single hidden blade, though its bracer had been replaced, courtesy of Niccolò Machiavelli. Later on, however, Leonardo da Vinci was again able to reconstruct a secondary hidden blade for him, with Ezio providing him with the money necessary for the materials.

Aside from using them in combat, Ezio also made use of his hidden blade to unlock the entrances of certain Lairs of Romulus, and mechanisms within the Temple of Pythagoras.

Additionally, Ezio's Assassin recruits were each equipped with a single hidden blade, as the right to use two hidden blades was only reserved for the most trusted of Assassins, or those who had earned the rank of Master Assassin. However, upon reaching the rank of Assassino, the apprentice was given a hidden blade with a bracer much like Ezio's. The apprentices were capable of all of the standard assassination techniques.

Modern Times
During the escape from the Assassin Hideout, Desmond Miles obtained a hidden blade and bracer that was almost identical to Ezio's hidden blade. He later used that hidden blade to fend off the Abstergo guards who had come to capture him.

Later on, upon traveling to Monteriggioni, Desmond began using a bare hidden blade without a bracer, making it less visible on his arm. Also, much as Ezio had once done, he used it to operate a mechanism in the tunnels underneath the Sanctuary.

Additionally, in the Animus Virtual Training Program developed by Rebecca Crane, Desmond was given the chance to hone his skills with the hidden blade. Such challenges included Stealth Assassinations and Flawless Kill Streaks using only the hidden blade.

Combat
Assassination Techniques
Third Crusade
As it was mainly used for stealth assassinations, the hidden blade could only be used in combat under certain conditions, and could not block any attack. Altaïr was only able to assassinate a guard who had fallen on the ground (due to a grab-break, counter or grab) or had become momentarily distracted.

Additionally, Altaïr could use the hidden blade in a counter-attack; though the time frame was extremely small, especially in comparison to that of the sword and the short blade. Successfully intercepting an enemy attack enabled one of several different – and always lethal – counter-attacks, in which Altaïr stabbed his opponent in the chest, head, abdomen, foot, base of the skull, or spine. Although the time frame to counter is miniscule, it will immediatly kill the attacker; even bosses such as Al Mualim.

Renaissance
The hidden blades eventually became vastly more useful in combat due to several upgrades. They could be used offensively, allowing Ezio to block attacks with them as any other weapon. The blades were a fast but low damage weapon, making them useful for suppressing enemy attacks.

Unlike other weapons, every counter-attack with the hidden blades resulted an instant kill, with only a narrow timing window as a disadvantage. Unlike the sword or the short blade, the hidden blades could counter attacks from Brutes, Seekers and Papal guards.

The hidden blade also gave Ezio more freedom in movement than any other weapon. For example, Ezio could easily strafe a 180° arc while in combat, which was barely possible (except from very close range) with the sword or dagger. It also allowed Ezio to quickly flee from a battle without having to take the time to sheathe his weapon.

By his arrival in Rome, Ezio had gained a greater aptitude with the hidden blades. Aside from being able to perform more counter-attacks (due to an increased time window) he was now able to perform multiple instant kills after killing a single guard. To continue this "execution streak," each kill needed to be quickly followed up with another, without Ezio being hit in turn.

Upgrades
Throughout his travels, Ezio would acquire several Codex pages that, upon decryption, detailed upgrades for the hidden blade that were envisioned by Altaïr. These improvements were then built for Ezio by Leonardo da Vinci.

The first of these improvements was the addition of a second hidden blade made from a difficult-to-obtain metal, which was attached to the user's other arm. The second was a metal plate on top of the primary blade's bracer that allowed one to safely deflect enemy attacks with the blades.

Other Codex upgrades included the Poison blade and Pistol. The poison blade allowed Ezio to stab an enemy and leave them to die slowly, granting both a low-profile assassination as well as a distraction to kill or bypass other enemies, while the Pistol allowed Ezio to kill from a distance. Additionally, both blades could be supplemented with various vambraces, which acted as protective armor.

Additionally, upon his arrival in Rome, Leonardo also envisioned further improvements to the hidden blade. The first was the Poison dart launcher, which allowed the use of the poison blade from a distance, and the Hidden Bolt, which fired small Crossbow bolts.

Trivia
Design
*Patrice Desilets, the creative director of the game, stated that the addition of a second blade in Assassin's Creed II also had a lucid reason: it's Assassin's Creed II, so there are two blades.
*The original design of Ezio's second hidden blade in Assassin's Creed II was displayed as a brown glove, however, in-game, it was replaced with a second bracer. This was reverted in Brotherhood, however, where his second hidden blade included a glove, until a bracer was purchased.
*It is unknown why the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood box art, E3 Trailer and other official media depict Ezio with a secondary hidden blade bracer identical to his primary one, as in-game, no such second bracer exists.
*The second hidden blade is marginally longer than the primary one in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, perhaps designed to be a more effective melee weapon to complement the primary hidden blade's design as an assassination tool.

Mechanism
*In the E3 teaser trailer of Assassin's Creed (as well as in certain concept art), Altaïr can be seen pushing a button to operate his hidden blade. In the actual games, however, no such button or other trigger mechanism exists.
*In Assassin's Creed: Renaissance and the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood novel, unleashing the hidden blade required the use of a button, via a certain muscle on the forearm being flexed.
*In an Assassin's Creed Developer Diary video, Jade Raymond speaks about Altaïr's lack of his ring finger, which is due to the initiation ceremony when a novice is promoted to an Assassin. The ring finger of the left hand is cut off, the hidden blade is installed, and the new born Assassin is ready to complete the missions bestowed upon him or her.
*The hidden blade is a crafted item in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy. The materials for its construction are 2 Coils, 1 Iron, 1 Hide and 1 Box of Components (which in turn is crafted using 3 Gears, 3 Screws, 1 Chain and 2 Sprockets).

Others
*Despite being equipped with a hidden blade, some Assassins (such as Malik Al-Sayf) did not have an amputated finger.
*The first recorded usage of the hidden blade by an Assassin was by Darius, when he assassinated Xerxes of Persia. However, his ring finger remained intact and he wielded it on his right hand.
*The hidden blade is used in every major assassination. Even if the player begins by attacking the enemy with a sword, the Assassin will always finish them off with the hidden blade.
*In Assassins Creed: Bloodlines, if the PlayStation Portable is linked to Assassins Creed II, Altair's hidden blade can be upgraded to be used to block light and heavy attacks.

The rank of Master Assassin was one of the highest obtainable within the Assassin's Order, and those who held this title were presumed to have reached the peak of their learning as an Assassin.

The rank garnered a large amount of respect from other members within the Order, and indicated individuals who possessed uncommon skill and talent in both the arts of stealth and assassination. A Master Assassin was meant to embody the Creed; they will never harm an innocent, always hide in plain sight, and never compromise the Brotherhood.
Crusades
Like other Assassins, Master Assassins of the time possessed the eagle beak-like design upon their hoods, but their robes were generally longer, forming a bird-like "tail" that fluttered whenever they performed a leap of faith or stood on a ledge. In addition, their leather belts were larger, their red sashes wider and longer, and they had permission to carry any weapon. The color of their robes remained white, as the only member allowed to wear another color, (specifically, black) was the Grand Master.

Renaissance
With the order much less public, a uniform guideline no longer existed. Renaissance Assassins were a small group, with wide- reaching access to knowledge and weapons. Most retained their free-running, hidden blades and beak-like hooded traditions.
Throughout the events of Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles, and Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad wielded a personal sword of superior power compared to all other weapons. The sword continues its appearence in Assassin's Creed II, and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, where it is named, the "Sword of Altaïr". However, it is now used by Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a descendant of Altaïr. The blade's guard is shaped like an eagle's wings and the bottom of the hilt has the shape of an eagle's head, while the blade itself is both long and agile, making it a light and deadly weapon.

Assassin's Creed
The game starts with Altaïr using the Syrian sword, which he uses with great skill and ease, until Al Mualim demotes him to Novice for breaking all three tenets of The Creed. During his progression back into the higher ranks, he starts off with a basic sword similar to the Sword of Altaïr, though it does not have a cross guard. After he assassinates his four assigned targets, he is granted the use of his personal once more. He continues to uses this sword until he is finally given the Syrian sword.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
Altaïr still possesses his sword during the events after Assassin's Creed, in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines. In fact, his swords can now be found hanging within Kantara Castle's Great Hall (in "The Bull" stage), as ornaments. During the game, this is the only sword available for his use. In the beginning, its attack power is rather low, and enemies have to be struck with it multiple times to be killed. However, upgrades for the sword and other weapons of Altaïr can be purchased by collecting Templar coins.

Assassin's Creed II
Altaïr's Sword is available at the Monteriggioni blacksmith for 50,000ƒ (or less if the store has been renovated) after DNA Sequence 8. This sword is the most powerful melee weapon, as all three stats are maxed out. Ezio wielded this sword when he fought Rodrigo Borgia in the Vault.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Since Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood takes place directly after Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore was still wielding the sword while he made his escape from the Vatican Vault into Rome with his uncle Mario. During the Siege of Monteriggioni, a cannon ball was shot through his room. As he was sleeping with Caterina Sforza at the time, he was unable to re-equip it, along with most of his armor and other weapons. However, after you finish all Assassin Guild challanges, you regain the sword.

Trivia
*The guards at Masyaf are seen wielding this sword.
*It is unknown why the sword is available from the Monteriggioni blacksmith, since the sword (being Altaïr's personal weapon) would be assumed to be available together with his armor once it was unlocked.
*It is interesting to note that the picture of the weapon's hilt in the blacksmith is wrapped in leather, however, the weapon itself does not have any leather wrapping.
*After doing the training exercise in Monteriggioni, Picking Up Weapons, Ezio's sword automatically falls from it's sheath. Using this, then re-equipping the sword from the weapons rack, results in two Swords of Altaïr.
*The swords appearance is slightly altered in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, with the handle turning from bronzed color, to completely silver.
*This sword is shorter compared to the other longswords Ezio can use, with the entire sword being only a little longer than the length of his arm. Despite this, Altaïr's sword is still the strongest weapon available.
*Strangely, though Altaïr's sword is considered the best sword in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, in Assassin's Creed, the Syrian sword (which in Assassin's Creed II was among the cheapest weapons) was the best sword.
*It is interesting to note that in later memory sequences, if the player has the sword equipped, it is possible to be knocked out of Ezio's hands by Brute guards, and even picked up by an NPC. It can, however, be re-equipped in the Villa or the Tiber Island Hideout, depending on which game is being played.
*The sword appears on a weapon rack in the Tiber Island Hideout once Ezio completes all five Assassin's Guild challenges, and can only be equipped from there. Just as it did in Assassin's Creed II, it has maximum damage, speed, and deflect stats.
*Assassin Apprentices are able to use this sword once they reach the final rank of Assassino, however for them, it is called the Assassin Sword.
*During the memory When In Rome, in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio kills and impersonates a guard named Luigi in order reach, and infiltrate, Juan Borgia the Elder's party to assassinate him, when a fellow guard draws and raises the Sword of Altaïr to "convince" the senate to hand the chest to Luigi. This is rather unusual, and unclear if intentional or rendered accidentally by the developers.
A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing is a memory in Assassins Creed: Brotherhood.

Description
Ezio Auditore travels to the Vaticano District to uncover the conspiracy surrounding the Followers of Romulus and to continue his search for the shrines to Romulus. Upon arriving, Ezio makes his way towards the Basilica di San Pietro, entering through a secret entrance located outside the pavilion.

Upon entering the Basilica, Ezio watches over the conclusion of mass. As soon as the prayers end and the populace of the Basilica begin to disperse, the Assassin uses his eagle vision to locate a corrupt Cardinal. Weaving between the crowds, Ezio tails his target, overhearing conversations of his actions in Rome. Following the man to a corridor alongside the main hall, Ezio witnesses a meeting between false Followers of Romulus and the corrupt Cardinal. The Followers leave, having handed the Cardinal a key. Ezio slips into the corridor and confronts the man, resulting in a chase across the entirety of the Basilica. The chase concludes as Ezio corners the Cardinal in a room atop San Pietro. A brief altercation ensues, resulting in the death of the Cardinal at the hands of the assassin. Searching his body, Ezio retrieves the key and performs a leap of faith from the tower, entering the shrine to Romulus below. He claims a scroll of Romulus and the fourth key of six, to the treasure of Romulus and returns to Rome.

Dialogue
Ezio enters the Basilica during the conclusion of mass.
*Mass Giver: Benedìcat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater, et Filius, et Spìritus Sanctus, Amen. Ita, missa est. Deo gràtias.
The Cardinal being followed by Ezio meets with two 'Followers of Romulus'.
*Cardinal: I will write the sermons, then leave them for you within the shrine. Make sure you deliver them convincingly...with passion.
*Follower of Romulus: The followers will do anything we tell them to, padrone (master). They believe their god commands them.
*Cardinal: Bene. (Good.) Do you have the key?
*Follower of Romulus: Yes, padrone (master).
The follower hands over the key to his master.
*Cardinal: May the Lord be with you.
*Follower of Romulus: And also with you, padrone (master).
Ezio confronts the Cardinal.
*Cardinal: Assassino! (Assassin!) You will not get me!
The cardinal uses a lift to ascend a tower.
*Cardinal: My ascension takes me closer to God, and away from you, Assassino (Assassin)!
After a brief chase sequence outside, the Cardinal re-enters the Basilica, closing the door on Ezio.
*Cardinal: Sanctuary denied!
While chasing the cardinal, the swing mechanism Ezio is using brakes, slamming him down to a lower platform.
*Cardinal: It seems God is on my side, Assassino (Assassin)!
Ezio resumes his chase of the Cardinal across the scaffolding in the Basilica.
*Cardinal: What do you want, Assassino (Assassin)?
*Ezio: The Followers of Romulus work for the Pope's gain.
*Cardinal: Of course. They are ignorant. We are enlightened. Their savagery will lead the people to the light of the Church.
Ezio corners the cardinal in the Basilica's tower.
*Ezio: You have nowhere to run.
*Cardinal: What a fool. You wage war against the very instrument that prevents the people from overthrowing order.
*Ezio: Your order is no order at all!
Ezio kills the Cardinal, and lays him to rest.
*Ezio: Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)

Outcome
Ezio kills the Cardinal, obtains his key, granting him access to the shrine to Romulus. He claims a scroll of Romulus and one of the six keys required to unlock the treasure of Romulus.
Trivia
*To get 100% synchronization, the player must finish the memory within eight minutes.
*The key taken with the Scroll is one of six which are required to unlock the Armor and Dagger of Brutus.
*There are three flags that may be found in this Secret Location.
*There is a special cutscene if Ezio throws the cardinal over the side of the rail. As he falls, Ezio grabs onto the key around his neck and he says: "You saved me! Praise God!" before Ezio forcefully pulls the key, making the chain break and letting the cardinal fall down to his death.
*When exploring the Lair of Romulus, it starts to rain. This is the only time the weather changes in the Assassin's Creed series.
