Long before [[Humans|mankind]] existed, there was a technologically advanced civilization which inhabited Earth. They made humanity, and enslaved them by modifying their brain to be manipulable by Pieces of Eden. For that moment there was a forced peace, until Adam and Eve stole one of the Pieces, an Apple,<ref name="The Truth, ACII"/> and started [[Human-First Civilization War|a war between the two species]]. The Pieces of Eden were not destroyed by the blast, and throughout time, humans started recovering them, also causing a split of sides based on different mindsets, [[Templars]] and [[Assassins]]. The Templars were out to restore peace in the way the First Civilization had once done, forced by the Pieces, unlike the Assassins, that fought for freedom and a flawed humanity, putting free will above order.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Many decades went by as the fight continued between Templar and Assassin, both knowing the importance of the Pieces, especially the Apple, to reach their goal.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/><ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

The Apples featured as the most well known Piece of Eden, being favored by [[Abstergo]] in their plan of [[New World Order|The New World]], being likely the most predictable Piece, as some other Pieces were known to be able to create time paradoxes.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Apples were designed to create illusions and to control human minds,<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> they were used by many great rulers throughout history,<ref name="Glyphs">''[[Glyphs]]''</ref> proving the efficiency of the Apples' powers. The First Civilization added a small part to the human brain that made them susceptible to these powers, only those with mixed genes were mentally immune to the manipulation, but not physically.<ref name="Assassin's Creed"/><ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/> In modern times, humans themselves had already started research on the brain, comparing them to those of other animals, seeing that they were not like the other animals, but not knowing the reason for this.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

All the Apples could presumably be used in conjunction with [[The Staff|the Staff]], though it is only certainly for one; Ezio's Apple. [[Ezio]], an ancestor of [[Desmond]], used the two Pieces of Eden to open the [[Vatican Vault]], before taking the Apple, and losing the Staff that was pulled into the ground.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

Apples also contained knowledge of many technologies used by the First Civilization. Like most or all other Pieces, they were able to communicate with people, showing them the products necessary to make the technology and transferring wisdom about the manufacturing of the shown devices. A good example of this was [[Leonardo da Vinci]], who studied one of the Apples and invented four[[ war machines]] and several other weapons with technology way beyond his own time.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

It is known that at least one of the Apples, the ones that [[Altaïr]], Ezio and Desmond held, could be used as a weapon, turning humans against one another, or killing them instantly with its beam, though temporarily draining energy out of its possessor.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood"/>

There were only six known Apples, one of which had been destroyed in an [[DIA Satellite Accident|Abstergo accident]].<ref name="Assassin's Creed II"/>

With the power of this item, he became the leader of [[France]] with the name of Napoleon I, ruling in military and political sense. It is unknown how he came into the possession of this Piece of Eden, and when and how he lost it.

The second known human owner was [[Harry Houdini]],<ref name="MASONS/GEORGE WASHINGTON"/> a magician who used the First Apple to create his "impossible" stunts. He was assassinated by a group of people that wanted to take the Apple from him, whereas in common believe, he had suffered from a fatal ruptured appendix.

Later, the Piece was used in [[Assassination of John F. Kennedy|the assassination]] of [[John F. The first known human possessor of the Second Apple was [[Malik]], who only owned it temporarily after retrieving it from [[Solomon's Temple]]. For some time after, it was [[Rashid ad-Din Sinan]] who kept it, later using it to control the people of Masyaf, in an attempt to defeat Altaïr, but instead the [[Mentor]] was overthrown himself, and Altaïr took the Apple from him.<ref name="Assassin's Creed">''[[Assassin's Creed]]''</ref>

Altaïr then kept the Piece until his death, in 1257, using it several times for either his own safety or for its knowledge.

The first known human to possess the Fourth Apple was [[Nikola Tesla]],<ref name="TESLA HAS THE APPLE">[[Assassin's Creed II]] - [[Glyphs]] - Puzzle #11 "The Inventor"</ref> who found it in his home country of [[Croatia]]. He most likely used it to develop his technology on the availability of electricity worldwide,<ref name="FREE ELECTRICITY">[[Assassin's Creed II]] - [[Glyphs]] - Puzzle #12 "Titans of Industry"</ref> which the Templars started campaigning against, using [[Thomas Edison|Edison]] to publicly slander Tesla and to videotape the electrocution of an elephant, to prove the danger of electricity. Some time after this, the Templars broke into Tesla's lab, stealing his Apple and using it to drive him insane.<ref name="TESLA HAS THE APPLE"/>

The Fourth Apple then presumably came into the hands of Mark Twain, which indicates that the Piece came into Edison's possession after the Templars took it from Tesla. The Fifth Apple was recovered from the moon by Lyndon B. Johnson, after the Templars had taken the Third Apple from John F. The Apple was used by Ezio, together with the Staff and after having fallen into the hands of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], to open the [[Vatican Vault]], in which he spoke to a hologram of [[Minerva]], one of the people of First Civilzation.<ref name="Assassin's Creed II">''[[Assassin's Creed II]]''</ref>

During the [[Siege of Monteriggioni]], Ezio lent the Apple to [[Mario Auditore]], who kept it safe as Ezio protected the village. However, Mario was caught by [[Cesare Borgia]], who took the Apple from him, and killed him in front of Ezio. Cesare gave it to [[Leonardo da Vinci]] so he could study it and supply him with [[War Machines|war machines]], but it was eventually stolen once more by Rodrigo Borgia, who hid it at the [[Basilica di San Pietro]], where Ezio found it and used it to exterminate Cesare's followers before [[Fall of Cesare Borgia|defeating Cesare]] himself.<ref name="Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

The last known person to come in contact with the Apple was [[Desmond Miles]], who was forced by [[Juno]] to stab [[Lucy Stillman]] in the abdomen after activating it. By the [[Third Crusade]], ten [[Templars]] had found the Apple, which remained hidden in the catacombs of [[Solomon's Temple]] in [[Jerusalem]].<ref name="AC"/>

Some time afterwards, in 1191, the [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Templar Grand Master]] [[Robert de Sable]] sought to take the Apple for himself. Discovering this, Rashid ad-Din Sinan, more commonly referred to as Al Mualim, sent three of his [[Assassins]] - [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] and the brothers [[Malik Al-Sayf|Malik]] and [[Kadar Al-Sayf]] - to intercept him, and take the artifact to the Assassins' fortress in [[Masyaf]].<ref name="AC"/>

Despite suffering a grievous injury and losing his brother Kadar, Malik Al-Sayf was able to retrieve the Apple and bring it to Al Mualim, while Altaïr was routed by the Templars. Throughout the year, Al Mualim kept the Apple close at all times, meanwhile sending Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to kill Robert, and the other eight Templars who knew of the Apple.<ref name="AC"/>

During Altaïr's absence to kill Robert de Sable, Al Mualim hypnotized the Assassins and villagers of Masyaf, corrupted by the Apple's power and revealing himself to secretly be a Templar too. When Al Mualim was [[Retaking of Masyaf|confronted]] by Altaïr after his return, Al Mualim utilized several of the Apple abilities to defend himself.<ref name="AC"/>

However, Altaïr was able to kill Al Mualim and take the Apple. Joined by Malik Al-Sayf and three other Assassins, they witnessed a map showing yet more Pieces of Eden erupting from the Apple.<ref name="AC"/> Altaïr, fearing that Al Mualim would still use the Apple's powers even in his death, intended to burn Al Mualim's body to be certain that he would not return from death - against the Assassins' rule to not burn a man's body. Altaïr's intentions were received both positively and negatively, with Altaïr's former friend and rival [[Abbas Sofian]] being the main person to stand against Altaïr.<ref name="ACR">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

The Order was temporarily split into two factions, with a fight erupting between the two after Abbas was angered by Altaïr after he burned their Master's body, and shoved him off the cliff they were standing on. Abbas quickly fled the scene and returned to Al Mualim's study, where he retrieved the Apple, and climbed a watchtower right outside Masyaf fortress. However, Abbas was not able to use the Apple's powers properly, and the Apple started draining the life from various Assassins in Masyaf, including Abbas himself. Altaïr, less affected than the other Assassins, was able to obtain the Apple from Abbas before it killed him. Abbas apologized,<ref name="ACR"/> and the Order united under Altaïr.<ref name="ACTSC">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade]]''</ref>

Despite this accident, Altaïr carefully studied the Apple throughout most of his life, using it to advance the Assassin Order, creating several new techniques for the Assassins to use.<ref name="AC2"/> Altaïr also carried it with him when journeying to [[Cyprus]] to [[Hunt on Cyprus|eliminate the Templars there]]. Continuing to study it in secret, he wrote his discoveries in his [[Codex]], and used it once in public to calm a mob that was falsely rallied against him.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

In 1217, Altaïr, his wife [[Maria Thorpe|Maria]] and son [[Darim Ibn-La'Ahad|Darim]] had traveled to Mongolia to assassinate [[Genghis Khan]] and eliminate the [[Mongols|Mongol threat]]. They returned to Masyaf ten years later, successful in their objective with help from the Mongolian Assassin [[Qulan Gal]]. However, in their absence, Abbas Sofian had killed Altaïr's second son [[Sef Ibn-La'Ahad|Sef]] and imprisoned Malik Al-Sayf, only to later have him killed as well. With the acting leader Malik in prison, Abbas had created a council to lead the Assassin Order, with himself as its head. Altaïr and Maria faced Abbas to take the Order back, with Abbas demanding that Altaïr had over the Apple. Taunting Abbas, Altaïr let him take it, and Abbas' henchman [[Swami]] came to retrieve it. Revealing himself to be Sef's killer and that he told Sef that his father ordered his death before killing him, Swami felt Altaïr's anger reaching his body via the Apple upon touching it. A golden glow shining from his mouth, Swami started mutilating himself, killing Maria in the frenzy. Altaïr escaped Masyaf, eventually meeting with Darim along the way, and ignited a 20-year self-exile to [[Alamut]].<ref name="ACTSC"/>

During those twenty years, Altaïr studied the Apple more, even managing to create a [[Hidden Gun|hidden gun]].<ref name="AC2"/> Additionally, the Apple led Altaïr to six [[Memory Seals]]. After those twenty years of exile, Altaïr returned to Masyaf and took the Order back from Abbas with virtue - gaining the support from the Assassins - and first tested the hidden gun on Abbas, killing him.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

Upon regaining control of the Order once again, Altaïr ordered the construction of a library, intending to hide all his books there. A few years later, Darim met the [[Venice|Venetian]] tradesmen [[Niccolò Polo|Niccolò]] and [[Maffeo Polo]]. Inviting them to stay at Masyaf in 1257,<ref name="ACTSC"/> the two men were trained by Altaïr, then 92-years old, into becoming Assassins. After a month of training,<ref name="ACR"/> Masyaf was attacked by the Mongols under command of [[Hülegü Khan]], seeking retaliation for Genghis Khan's death.<ref name="ACTSC"/> Altaïr passed on several of his books and his Codex to the Polo brothers, and before they left Masyaf, gave Niccolò five of the six Memory Seals, which Altaïr had turned into keys needed to open his library.<ref name="ACR"/>

Altaïr and Darim returned to Masyaf fortress after repelling a Mongol attack, and bidding each other farewell before the entrance to Altaïr's library. Darim was ordered to take Altaïr's remaining books with him to [[Alexandria]], after which Darim realized that the library was not meant to be a library. Revealing that nobody must know what secret it contained, Altaïr entered the library and closed the gate behind him, making his way to the end of the library. There, he placed the Apple on a pedestal, before imprinting the sixth Memory Seal with a memory, and passing away.<ref name="ACR"/>

During the early 16th century, the leader of the [[Italian Assassins]] and a [[Mentor]] in the Assassin Order, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], began a journey to Masyaf, hoping to find the secret that was hidden there.<ref name="ACR"/>

Eventually finding the library, and retrieving [[Niccolò Polo's journal]] from a Templar captain called [[Leandros]], who was trying to get into the library as well, Ezio made his way to Constantinople to retrieve the five keys and unlock the entrance to the library. After several months of searching, aided by the [[Constantinople Assassins Guild|local Assassins Guild]] and a [[Venice|Venetian]]-[[Ottoman Empire|Ottoman]] bookseller called [[Sofia Sartor]], Ezio was able to obtain the keys and together with Sofia made his way to Masyaf once again.<ref name="ACR"/>

Entering the library, Ezio found out that the secret was another Apple, but decided to not take it from its pedestal, instead leaving the artifact in the library.<ref name="ACR"/>

By the [[Third Crusade]], ten [[Templars]] had found the Apple, which remained hidden in the catacombs of [[Solomon's Temple]] in [[Jerusalem]].<ref name="AC"/>

Some time afterwards, in 1191, the [[Grand Master of the Templar Order|Templar Grand Master]] [[Robert de Sable]] sought to take the Apple for himself. Discovering this, Rashid ad-Din Sinan, more commonly referred to as Al Mualim, sent three of his [[Assassins]] - [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]] and the brothers [[Malik Al-Sayf|Malik]] and [[Kadar Al-Sayf]] - to intercept him, and take the artifact to the Assassins' fortress in [[Masyaf]].<ref name="AC"/>

Despite suffering a grievous injury and losing his brother Kadar, Malik Al-Sayf was able to retrieve the Apple and bring it to Al Mualim, while Altaïr was routed by the Templars. Throughout the year, Al Mualim kept the Apple close at all times, meanwhile sending Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to kill Robert, and the other eight Templars who knew of the Apple.<ref name="AC"/>

During Altaïr's absence to kill Robert de Sable, Al Mualim hypnotized the Assassins and villagers of Masyaf, corrupted by the Apple's power and revealing himself to secretly be a Templar too. When Al Mualim was [[Retaking of Masyaf|confronted]] by Altaïr after his return, Al Mualim utilized several of the Apple abilities to defend himself.<ref name="AC"/>

However, Altaïr was able to kill Al Mualim and take the Apple. Joined by Malik Al-Sayf and three other Assassins, they witnessed a map showing yet more Pieces of Eden erupting from the Apple.<ref name="AC"/> Altaïr, fearing that Al Mualim would still use the Apple's powers even in his death, intended to burn Al Mualim's body to be certain that he would not return from death - against the Assassins' rule to not burn a man's body. Altaïr's intentions were received both positively and negatively, with Altaïr's former friend and rival [[Abbas Sofian]] being the main person to stand against Altaïr.<ref name="ACR">''[[Assassin's Creed: Revelations]]''</ref>

The Order was temporarily split into two factions, with a fight erupting between the two after Abbas was angered by Altaïr after he burned their Master's body, and shoved him off the cliff they were standing on. Abbas quickly fled the scene and returned to Al Mualim's study, where he retrieved the Apple, and climbed a watchtower right outside Masyaf fortress. However, Abbas was not able to use the Apple's powers properly, and the Apple started draining the life from various Assassins in Masyaf, including Abbas himself. Altaïr, less affected than the other Assassins, was able to obtain the Apple from Abbas before it killed him. Abbas apologized,<ref name="ACR"/> and the Order united under Altaïr.<ref name="ACTSC">''[[Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade]]''</ref>

Despite this accident, Altaïr carefully studied the Apple throughout most of his life, using it to advance the Assassin Order, creating several new techniques for the Assassins to use.<ref name="AC2"/> Altaïr also carried it with him when journeying to [[Cyprus]] to [[Hunt on Cyprus|eliminate the Templars there]]. Continuing to study it in secret, he wrote his discoveries in his [[Codex]], and used it once in public to calm a mob that was falsely rallied against him.<ref name="Bloodlines"/>

In 1217, Altaïr, his wife [[Maria Thorpe|Maria]] and son [[Darim Ibn-La'Ahad|Darim]] had traveled to Mongolia to assassinate [[Genghis Khan]] and eliminate the [[Mongols|Mongol threat]]. They returned to Masyaf ten years later, successful in their objective with help from the Mongolian Assassin [[Qulan Gal]]. However, in their absence, Abbas Sofian had killed Altaïr's second son [[Sef Ibn-La'Ahad|Sef]] and imprisoned Malik Al-Sayf, only to later have him killed as well. With the acting leader Malik in prison, Abbas had created a council to lead the Assassin Order, with himself as its head. Altaïr and Maria faced Abbas to take the Order back, with Abbas demanding that Altaïr had over the Apple. Taunting Abbas, Altaïr let him take it, and Abbas' henchman [[Swami]] came to retrieve it. Revealing himself to be Sef's killer and that he told Sef that his father ordered his death before killing him, Swami felt Altaïr's anger reaching his body via the Apple upon touching it. A golden glow shining from his mouth, Swami started mutilating himself, killing Maria in the frenzy. Altaïr escaped Masyaf, eventually meeting with Darim along the way, and ignited a 20-year self-exile to [[Alamut]].<ref name="ACTSC"/>

During those twenty years, Altaïr studied the Apple more, even managing to create a [[Hidden Gun|hidden gun]].<ref name="AC2"/> Additionally, the Apple led Altaïr to six [[Memory Seals]]. After those twenty years of exile, Altaïr returned to Masyaf and took the Order back from Abbas with virtue - gaining the support from the Assassins - and first tested the hidden gun on Abbas, killing him.<ref name="ACTSC"/>

Upon regaining control of the Order once again, Altaïr ordered the construction of a library, intending to hide all his books there. A few years later, Darim met the [[Venice|Venetian]] tradesmen [[Niccolò Polo|Niccolò]] and [[Maffeo Polo]]. Inviting them to stay at Masyaf in 1257,<ref name="ACTSC"/> the two men were trained by Altaïr, then 92-years old, into becoming Assassins. After a month of training,<ref name="ACR"/> Masyaf was attacked by the Mongols under command of [[Hülegü Khan]], seeking retaliation for Genghis Khan's death.<ref name="ACTSC"/> Altaïr passed on several of his books and his Codex to the Polo brothers, and before they left Masyaf, gave Niccolò five of the six Memory Seals, which Altaïr had turned into keys needed to open his library.<ref name="ACR"/>

Altaïr and Darim returned to Masyaf fortress after repelling a Mongol attack, and bidding each other farewell before the entrance to Altaïr's library. Darim was ordered to take Altaïr's remaining books with him to [[Alexandria]], after which Darim realized that the library was not meant to be a library. Revealing that nobody must know what secret it contained, Altaïr entered the library and closed the gate behind him, making his way to the end of the library. There, he placed the Apple on a pedestal, before imprinting the sixth Memory Seal with a memory, and passing away.<ref name="ACR"/>

===Renaissance===
During the early 16th century, the leader of the [[Italian Assassins]] and a [[Mentor]] in the Assassin Order, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], began a journey to Masyaf, hoping to find the secret that was hidden there.<ref name="ACR"/>

Eventually finding the library, and retrieving [[Niccolò Polo's journal]] from a Templar captain called [[Leandros]], who was trying to get into the library as well, Ezio made his way to Constantinople to retrieve the five keys and unlock the entrance to the library. After several months of searching, aided by the [[Constantinople Assassins Guild|local Assassins Guild]] and a [[Venice|Venetian]]-[[Ottoman Empire|Ottoman]] bookseller called [[Sofia Sartor]], Ezio was able to obtain the keys and together with Sofia made his way to Masyaf once again.<ref name="ACR"/>

Entering the library, Ezio found out that the secret was another Apple, but decided to not take it from its pedestal, instead leaving the artifact in the library.<ref name="ACR"/>

By modern times, the Apple had passed into the hands of [[Mahatma Gandhi]], who used it to acquire a large religious following in [[India]] during the early 20th century. However, the [[Templars]] found out about this, and had Gandhi murdered on 30 January 1948, so they could recover it.<ref name="AC2"/>

By 1963, the Templars had both the [[First Apple|First]] and Second Apples, and both were used in the [[Assassination of John F. Kennedy|Kennedy assassination]]. [[William Greer]], the Secret Service agent assigned to drive [[John F. Kennedy|Kennedy]]'s limousine, was trained in the use of the Second Apple, and was instructed to grab the [[Third Apple]] after the president was killed.<ref name="AC2"/>

[[Abstergo Industries]] experimented with the Second Apple underneath [[wikipedia:Denver International Airport|Denver International Airport]], though they eventually caused the [[DIA satellite accident]], ultimately losing the Apple.<ref name="AC"/>
