In 1257, the [[Venice|Venetian]] explorers [[Niccolò Polo|Niccolò]] and [[Maffeo Polo]] were invited to stay at the Assassins' fortress of [[Masyaf]] by [[Darim Ibn-La'Ahad]], the son of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. When the [[Mongol Empire|Mongols]] eventually attacked, the Polo brothers left Masyaf towards their home in Constantinople, where they were successful in creating a [[Turkish Assassins|guild]] in 1258. Marco Polo passed the Codex into the hands of fellow Assassin [[Dante Alighieri]]. The next year, Dante took on the son - who would later take on the name [[Domenico Auditore]] - of a fellow Assassin as an apprentice, and the boy would later in turn take both Dante and the Codex to [[Spain]].<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1321, Dante was killed by the Templars, proving their continuing existence to the Assassins. The Codex was given to Domenico and he was tasked with bringing it to Spain; however, he and his family were attacked by pirates employed by the Templars while being docked in {{Wiki|Otranto}}, prompting Domenico to spread the Codex' pages across several boxes in his ship to prevent the pirates from finding it. Domenico's wife was brutally abused and murdered by the pirates, but Domenico and his son survived.<ref name="AC2"/>

Both Marco Polo and Domenico's father were killed by the Templars in 1324, and using Marco's money, Domenico temporarily settled in [[Florence]], pretending to be part of the city's nobility by taking on the name Auditore. In 1327, Domenico bought and renovated a villa in [[Monteriggioni]], which he named the [[Villa Auditore]], that became the headquarters of the Italian Assassins for nearly two centuries.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1355, the Assassins stole a [[Shrouds of Eden]] from the french Templar [[Geoffroy de Charny]]. ===Templar Conspiracies===

At the end of 1476, under the leadership of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars planned to unite all of Italy under the Templar's banner by a series of conspiracies. Mario's brother ,[[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], investigated on rumors about a conspiracy against [[Milan]]. One night, Giovanni attacked a group of men led by Rodrigo in [[Florence]]. The [[Grand Master]] flew the scene, but Giovanni captured a henchman who revealed under torture that the Templars wanted to assassinated the Duke of Milan, [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza]], to weaken the power of [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] in Florence. Giovanni tried to stop the Templars but arrived too late; Galeazzo was killed and his death was avenged by a guard. Giovanni continued his investigation in Venice, where he found a cryptic letter from the Templars. He delivered the letter himself in Rome where he met Rodrigo, who asked him to join the Templars. Giovanni refused and killed Rodrigo's men, but broke his hidden blade and was wounded by the Grandmaster.<ref name="ACL">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>

After these events, Giovanni made a list of the Templar conspirators and imprisoned [[Francesco de' Pazzi]], a Templar banker who planned to assassinated Lorenzo de' Medici and capture Florence for the Templars. The Templars however, with the help of Giovanni's friend, [[Uberto Alberti]], arrested and executed Giovanni and his sons for treason. [[Paola]], the leader of courtesans of Florence, helped the last son of Giovanni, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], in his quest for revenge. She taught him stealth and informed him how and when to kill Uberto.

After Ezio killed the Gonfaloniere, the young man fled Florence with his mother and sister and went to Monteriggioni, where his uncle revealed the truth about his father. Mario taught combat skills and secrets of the Brotherhood to his nephew to convince him to take the place of his father in the search for the Codex pages. Ezio refused to join the Brotherhood but helped Mario to attack [[San Gimignano]], which was controlled by the Templars and killed [[Vieri de' Pazzi]]. Learning the Templars plot against Florence, Ezio resolved to kill every single Templar responsible for the death of his father and brothers and continue the search for the Codex pages. Mario decided to train Ezio through Assassins who would hide their affiliation to let Ezio find the truth himself.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1478, Ezio Auditore was helped by [[La Volpe]], the leader of the thieves' guild in Florence, who informed him that a Templar reunion would take place under [[Basilica di Santa Maria Novella]]. Ezio eavesdropped on the reunion and learned of the Templars' plan to assassinate Lorenzo de' Medici and his [[Giuliano de' Medici|brother]], which would allow them to take power in Florence. Ezio prevented the murder of Lorenzo, and killed Francesco de' Pazzi. After this, the five co-conspirators fled the city. Ezio tracked them down however, and with the help of Mario's mercenaries, assassinated every Templar involved in the Pazzi conspiracy. These actions made the Medici powerful allies of the Assassins for many years.<ref name="AC2"/>

Several years later, around 1481, [[Antonio de Magianis]], an Assassin who led the thieves guild of Venice, fought the Templar merchant [[Emilio Barbarigo]], who sought to unite every merchant under his banner to control every district of Venice. Antonio launched an attack on Emilio's palazzo, but failed, and many thieves were captured as a result. Ezio, who wanted to kill the Templar for his involvement in his father's death, helped Antonio to reconstruct the guild and killed Emilio in 1485. To take control of Venice, the Templars planned to murder the Doge, [[Giovanni Mocenigo]], and have one of their own take his place. Ezio and Antonio failed to prevent the poisoning and the Templar [[Marco Barbarigo]] was elected Doge.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1486, Ezio returned to Venice and with the help of Antonio and [[Teodora Contanto]], leader of the courtesans in Venice, killed the new Doge during the Carnavale. Marco's brother, [[Agostino Barbarigo]], an ally of the Assassins, took his place as Doge. The Templars took the Arsenale to make a diversion while they travelled for Cyprus. [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]], a Condottiero, attacked the Arsenale, but was captured. Ezio saved him and his men and launched a surprise attack on the Arsenale. He killed [[Silvio Barbarigo]] and his bodyguard, [[Dante Moro]], who revealed that the Templars were in search of a secret object in Cyprus.<ref name="AC2"/>

===Search for the vault===

The Assassins and the Templars were searching for the Codex pages, which contained information about a [[Vatican Vault|vault]], where an object of immense power was hidden. Only "The Prophet" could open the vault with two Pieces of Eden ---- The [[Apple of Eden|Apple]] and The [[Staves of Eden|Staff]]. Rodrigo Borgia believed he was The Prophet and wanted to acquire the artifacts for himself. In 1488, the Templars expedition in Cyprus was successful, and they returned to Venice with The [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple]], with Rodrigo himself travelling to Venice to retrieve the artifact. After learning that the man responsible for the death of his kin was in Venice, Ezio disguised himself as a guard and confronted Rodrigo. Mario and the others Assassins, who supported Ezio during his quest, joined him in the fight. Rodrigo escaped, but the Assassins obtained the Apple. They revealed to Ezio that they were all Assassins and that Ezio was The Prophet himself. After this, Ezio was officially inducted into the Brotherhood.<ref name="AC2"/>

The Assassins decided to hide the Apple in Forlì, a city controlled by [[Caterina Sforza]], an ally of the Assassins. Ezio and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] escorted the Apple to Forlì, but the city was attacked by the Orsi brothers, who were hired by Rodrigo to find the map of [[Girolamo Riario]] which revealed the location of the Codex pages. During the battle, the Orsi were assassinated, although Ezio was wounded and had lost the Apple. He later learned that the Apple was taken by a Florentine monk with a missing finger, [[Girolamo Savonarola]]. In 1491, during his search for the Apple, Ezio helped the [[Spanish Assassins]], who were hunted by the [[Spanish Inquisition]], who in turn, worked for the Templars. He saved the Assassins and rescued the king [[Muhammad XII of Granada]], which stopped the war between Spain and Grenada. He also saved [[Christopher Columbus]] from the Templars, who wanted to reach the New World before any other country.<ref>''[[Assassin's Creed II: Discovery]]''</ref>

In 1497, Ezio returned to Florence, where Savonarola had taken the Apple, used it to control the leader of the city and exiled the Medici. Ezio, Paola, La Volpe and Machiavelli started a revolt against Savonarola's rule. Ezio killed the lieutenants and the other Assassins led the population against Savonarola. One year later, Ezio retrieved the Apple after Savonarola was attacked by the mob.Just before Savonarola was about to be burned alive in public, Ezio assassinated the monk, as he believed that no one should have to suffer such a horrific fate. Before the population, Ezio demanded to the crowd to follow their own free will, and not anyone else like Savonarola, the Medici, or himself.<ref name="Bonfire of the Vanities">''Assassin's Creed II'' - ''[[Bonfire of the Vanities (DLC)|Bonfire of the Vanities]]''</ref>

Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI in 1492, acquired the Staff of Eden, which when combined with the Apple, could open the vault. The Assassins sent [[Perotto Calderon]] as a courier to discover secrets and intercept letters. However the Assassin fell in love with [[Lucrezia Borgia]], the daughter of Rodrigo, and when she become pregnant in 1498, Perotto was imprisoned. The Assassin escaped, and took his deformed [[Giovanni Borgia|son]] to the Shroud of Eden to save him, which was under the protection of the Assassins in Agnadello. Perotto was forced to kill his brothers to heal his son. A group of Assassins was sent to kill Perotto, seen as a traitor to the Brotherhood. After his death, some Assassins, like [[Rinaldo Vitturi]] left the Brotherhood due to the misuse of the Shroud.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

In 1499, the Assassins collected all of the Codex pages and with the Apple, they discovered that the vault was under the [[Sistine Chapel]]. Ezio went to the Vatican and confronted Rodrigo Borgia. After defeating Rodrigo, Ezio spared his life after realizing that killing him him would not solve anything. He entered the vault and met a strange being by the name of [[Minerva]], an individual of the [[Isu|First Civilization]]. She warned the descendant of Ezio, [[Desmond Miles]], that a catastrophic event which would wipe out civilization would occur soon, just like in [[Toba catastrophe|the past]], and that he was the only one who could save the world. After this, a bewildered Ezio left the vault with the Apple and returned with Mario to Monteriggioni. <ref name="AC2"/>

===Liberation of Rome===

In Monteriggioni, Ezio informed the Assassins and his family of what he found in the vault and the fact that he spared Rodrigo, which Machiavelli considered as a mistake and left the Villa. Enraged by the Assassin victory, [[Cesare Borgia]], Rodrigo' son, rallied his army and attacked Monteriggioni. The attack was short but fierce, and the Templars managed to reclaim the Apple of Eden, kill Mario Auditore, and capture Caterina Sforza. Wounded during the battle, Ezio decided to go to Rome to retrieve the Apple and avenge the attack, but fell unconscious during the travel. Niccolò Machiavelli found him and sent him to [[Margherita dei Campi]], to be healed.<ref name="ACBH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

After Ezio regained consciousness, Magherita gave him a new set of robes and equipment offered by Niccolò and informed Ezio that Niccolo wanted to see him. The two Assassins planned to take the Apple and kill Rodrigo and his son. With the help of La Volpe, Bartolomeo d'Alviano and his sister, [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia Auditore]] who took leadership of the courtesans of Rome, the Assassins had a strong network in Rome. In 1501, Ezio went to [[Castel Sant'Angelo]], to find the Apple and kill his targets, but could only save Caterina.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Understanding that the Borgia power was based on Rome, Ezio decided to induct new apprentices into the Brotherhood, recruited from the population of the city, and attack Cesare's lieutenants and allies such as the [[Cento Occhi]], the [[Followers of Romulus]] and the French army led by [[Octavian de Valois]].<ref name="ACBH"/> He created a group of Assassins, led by [[Francesco Vecellio]], which through Italy sabotaged Cesare power, killing his allies and protecting individuals who could opposed against Cesare. They also convinced Rinaldo and other former Assassins to rejoin the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/> Ezio also sent recruits around Europe and Asia to perform missions, as well as helping other Assassin branches in Barcelona, Calicut, Constantinople and Paris against the Templars, helping rulers in England and the Holy Empire or installing new guilds across Europe.<ref name="ACBH"/>

In August 1503, the Assassins managed to destroy Cesare's defenses and his [[War Machines]], thwarting Cesare's plans for invasion, and cutting off his funds by killing [[Juan Borgia the Elder|Juan Borgia]] as well as the support of the French army with the death of Octavian de Valois. The Assassins found also a key which opens one of the doors in the Castel Sant'Angelo. After Claudia was inducted to the Brotherhood and Ezio became the [[Mentor]] of the Brotherhood, Cesare returned to Rome to use the Apple to reverse the situation. As his father refused to give him the Apple and learning that he tried to poison him, Cesare killed his father in a rage. Ezio found the Apple and used it against the remnants of Borgia forces during the end of the year. In December 1503 Cesare was imprisoned by the new Pope, [[Julius II]], who became an ally for the Assassins.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Cesare tried to escape but Ezio stopped him and Cesare was sent to a prison in Spain. The Assassins fought the Borgia's diehards who stayed in Rome. In 1506, Cesare escaped from his prison and rallied an army to conquer Spain, Rome and Italy. Ezio Auditore followed him to Valencia and Viana, where he eventually managed to kill Cesare while he led a siege against a castle. After Cesare's death, the Templars in Italy were eradicated, allowing the Assassins to gain more power and influence, as well as acquiring more allies.<ref name="ACBH"/>

===Post-Borgia period===
After the destruction of the Templars in Italy, Ezio formed stronger ways of communication for the Assassins from Sicily to Venice and created more standard training methods for new Assassin recruits.

In 1509, Bartolomeo d'Alviano fought in the [[Battle of Agnadello]] to protect the Shroud against the army of [[Louis XII of France]]. Bartolomeo was captured and his cousin, [[Niccolò di Pitigliano]], took the artifact for himself. In 1510, Francesco Vecellio tracked Niccolò in [[Lonigo]], created a revolt against the condottiero. With a team of Assassins, Francesco stroke the manor, mortally wounded Niccolò and took the Shroud for the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

During these more peaceful times, Ezio Auditore left for Masyaf to search for [[Library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad|Altaïr's library]]. During his absence Claudia led the Assassins and contacted [[Desiderius Erasmus]], the Mentor of the [[Northern European Assassins]], who was concerned about the work of [[Martin Luther]] which could trouble the peace in Europe. In 1519, Giovanni Borgia, the son of Perotto Calderon and Lucrezia Borgia, who became an Assassin, went to Mexico with the troops of [[Hernán Cortés]] to find a Piece of Eden, a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] which was used by the Aztecs for sacrifices. During the [[Night of Sorrows]], Giovanni stole the artifact and brought it to [[Bombastus]]. Later in 1527, Giovanni was sent to Paris to search the second half of the [[Book of Abraham]], which contained occult knowledge. Giovanni, with [[Maria Amiel]], took the second half and discovered Pythagorean symbols. The two lovers went to the [[Temple of Pythagoras]] and contacted an individual from the First Civilization, [[Consus]].<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

== Appearance ==
Generally, the robes worn by the Italian Apprentices' hearkened back to those worn by the Levantine Assassins, being white and accompanied by a red sash around the waist. If the Apprentice attained the rank of ''Assassin ''he or she would be given white Assassin robes, similar to those of Ezio's own.

A few prominent Assassins within the Italian Brotherhood eschewed the more traditional attire; among these were the Mentor Niccolò Machiavelli, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, Claudia Auditore, Paola, Antonio de Magianis, Teodora Contanto, La Volpe and Rosa.

The Italian Assassins were trained in stealth, combat, pickpocketing, blending and parkour and used most of the tactics created by the Levantine Brotherhood. The Apprentices started off with only a hidden blade, but could acquire armor and more weapons as they gained experience.They could also obtain the hidden gun, and were allowed to carry crossbows after attaining the rank of ''Assassin.'' The Italian Assassins used a variety of weapons, like swords, maces, heavy weapons, crossbows, poisons, throwing knives, bow and arrows, and daggers.

In 1321, Dante was killed by the Templars, proving their continuing existence to the Assassins. At the end of 1476, under the leadership of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars planned to unite all Italy under Templar's banner, by a series of conspiracies. Mario's brother,[[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], investigated on rumors about a conspiracy against [[Milan]]. One night, Giovanni attacked a group of men led by Rodrigo in [[Florence]]. The [[Grand Master]] flew the scene but Giovanni captured a henchman who revealed under torture that the Templars wanted to assassinated the Duke of Milan, [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza]], to weaken the power of [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] in Florence. Giovanni tried to stop the Templars but arrived to late, Galeazzo was killed and his death was avenged by a guard. Giovanni continued his investigation in Venice, where he found a cryptic letter from the Templars. He delivered the letter himself in Rome where he met Rodrigo, who proposed him to join the Templars cause. Giovanni refused and killed Rodrigo's men, but broke his hidden blade and was wounded by the Grandmaster.<ref name="ACL">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>

After this events, Giovanni made a list of the Templars conspirators and imprisoned [[Francesco de' Pazzi]], a Templar banker who planned to assassinated Lorenzo de' Medici and took Florence for the Templars. But the Templars, with the help of Giovanni's friend, [[Uberto Alberti]], arrested and executed Giovanni and his sons for treason. [[Paola]], the leader of courtesans of Florence and an Assassin, helped the last son of Giovanni, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], in his quest for revenge. She taught him stealth and informed him how and when to kill Uberto.

After Ezio killed the Gonfaloniere, the young man fled Florence with his mother and sister and went to Monteriggioni, where his uncle revealed the truth about his father. Mario taught combat skills and secrets of the Brotherhood to his nephew to convince him to take the place of his father in the search for the Codex pages. Ezio refused to join the Brotherhood but helped Mario to attack [[San Gimignano]], which was controlled by the Templars and killed [[Vieri de' Pazzi]]. Learning the Templars plot against Florence, Ezio resolved to kill every single Templar responsible for the death of his father and brothers and continue the search for the Codex pages. Mario decided to train Ezio through Assassins who would hide their affiliation to let Ezio find the truth himself.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1478, Ezio Auditore was helped by [[La Volpe]], the leader to the thieves' guild of Florence and an Assassin, who informed him that a Templar reunion would take place under [[Basilica di Santa Maria Novella]]. Ezio, who eavesdropped the reunion, learned of the Templars' plan to assassinate Lorenzo de' Medici and his [[Giuliano de' Medici|brother]], which would allow them to take power in Florence. Ezio prevented the murder of Lorenzo, and killed Francesco de' Pazzi. After this, the five co-conspirators fled the city. Ezio, with the help of Mario's mercenaries, assassinated every Templar involved in the Pazzi conspiracy. These actions made the Medici powerful allies for the Assassins for many years.<ref name="AC2"/>

Several years later, around 1481, [[Antonio de Magianis]], an Assassin who led the thieves guild of Venice, fought the Templar merchant [[Emilio Barbarigo]], who sought to unite every merchant under his banner to control every district of Venice. Antonio launched an attack on his palazzo, but failed, and many thieves were captured as a result. Ezio, who wanted to kill the Templar for his involvement in his father's death, helped Antonio to reconstruct the guild and killed Emilio in 1485. The Assassins and the Templars were searching for the pages of the Codex, which contained information about a [[Vatican Vault|vault]], where an object of immense power was hidden. Only "The Prophet" could open the vault with two Pieces of Eden ---- The [[Apple of Eden|Apple]] and The [[Staves of Eden|Staff]]. Rodrigo Borgia believed he was The Prophet and wanted to acquire the artifacts for himself. In 1488, the Templars expedition in Cyprus was successful, and they returned to Venice with The [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple]], with Rodrigo himself travelling to Venice to retrieve the artifact. After learning that the man responsible for the death of his kin was in Venice, Ezio disguised himself as a guard and confronted Rodrigo. Mario and the others Assassins, who supported Ezio during his quest, joined him in the fight. Rodrigo escaped, but the Assassins acquired the Apple. They revealed to Ezio that they were all Assassins and that Ezio was The Prophet himself. After this, Ezio was officially inducted into the Brotherhood.<ref name="AC2"/>

The Assassins decided to hide the Apple in Forlì, a city controlled by [[Caterina Sforza]], an ally of the Assassins. Ezio and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] escorted the Apple to Forlì, but the city was attacked by the Orsi brothers, who were hired by Rodrigo to find the map of [[Girolamo Riario]] which revealed the location of the Codex pages. During the battle, the Orsi were assassinated, although Ezio was wounded and had lost the Apple. He later learned that the Apple was taken by a Florentine monk with a missing finger, [[Girolamo Savonarola]]. In 1497, Ezio returned to Florence, where Savonarola had taken the Apple, used it to control the leader of the city and exiled the Medici. Ezio, Paola, La Volpe and Machiavelli started a revolt against Savonarola's rule. Ezio killed the lieutenants and the other Assassins led the population against Savonarola. One year later, Ezio retrieved the Apple after Savonarola was attacked by the mob.Just before Savonarola was about to be burned alive in public, Ezio assassinated the monk, as he believed that no one should have to suffer such a horrific fate. Before the population, Ezio demanded to the crowd to follow their own free will, and not anyone else like Savonarola or the Medici, or himself.<ref name="Bonfire of the Vanities">''Assassin's Creed II'' - ''[[Bonfire of the Vanities (DLC)|Bonfire of the Vanities]]''</ref>

Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI in 1492, acquired the Staff of Eden, which when combined with the Apple, could open the vault. The Assassins sent [[Perotto Calderon]] as a courier to discover secrets and intercept letters. However the Assassin fell in love with [[Lucrezia Borgia]], the daughter of Rodrigo, and when she become pregnant in 1498, Perotto was imprisoned. The Assassin escaped, and took his deformed [[Giovanni Borgia|son]] to the Shroud of Eden to save him, which was under the protection of the Assassins in Agnadello. Perotto was forced to kill his brothers to heal his son. A group of Assassins was sent to kill Perotto, seen as a traitor to the Brotherhood. After his death, some Assassins, like [[Rinaldo Vitturi]] left the Brotherhood due to the misuse of the Shroud.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

In 1499, the Assassins collected all of the Codex pages and with the Apple, they discovered that the vault was under the [[Sistine Chapel]]. Ezio went to the Vatican and confronted Rodrigo Borgia. After defeating Rodrigo, Ezio spared his life after realizing that killing him him would not solve anything. He entered the vault and met a strange being by the name of [[Minerva]], an individual of the [[Isu|First Civilization]]. She warned the descendant of Ezio, [[Desmond Miles]], that a catastrophic event which would wipe out civilization would occur soon, just like in [[Toba catastrophe|the past]], and that he was the only one who could save the world. After this, a bewildered Ezio left the vault with the Apple and returned with Mario to Monteriggioni. <ref name="AC2"/>

===Liberation of Rome===

In Monteriggioni, Ezio informed the Assassins and his family of what he found in the vault and the fact that he spared Rodrigo, which Machiavelli considered as a mistake and left the Villa. Enraged by the Assassin victory, [[Cesare Borgia]], Rodrigo' son, rallied his army and attacked Monteriggioni. The attack was short but fierce, and the Templars managed to reclaim the Apple of Eden, kill Mario Auditore, and capture Caterina Sforza. Wounded during the battle, Ezio decided to go to Rome to retrieve the Apple and avenge the attack, but fell unconscious during the travel. Niccolò Machiavelli found him and sent him to [[Margherita dei Campi]], to be healed.<ref name="ACBH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

After Ezio regained consciousness, Magherita gave him a new set of robes and equipment offered by Niccolò and informed Ezio that Niccolo wanted to see him. The two Assassins planned to take the Apple and kill Rodrigo and his son. With the help of La Volpe, Bartolomeo d'Alviano and his sister, [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia Auditore]] who took leadership of the courtesans of Rome, the Assassins had a strong network in Rome. In 1501, Ezio went to [[Castel Sant'Angelo]], to find the Apple and kill his targets, but could only save Caterina.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Understanding that the Borgia power was based on Rome, Ezio decided to induct new apprentices into the Brotherhood, recruited from the population of the city, and attack Cesare's lieutenants and allies such as the [[Cento Occhi]], the [[Followers of Romulus]] and the French army led by [[Octavian de Valois]].<ref name="ACBH"/> He created a group of Assassins, led by [[Francesco Vecellio]], which through Italy sabotaged Cesare power, killing his allies and protecting individuals who could opposed against Cesare. They also convinced Rinaldo and other former Assassins to rejoin the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/> Ezio also sent recruits around Europe and Asia to perform missions, as well as helping other Assassin branches in Barcelona, Calicut, Constantinople and Paris against the Templars, helping rulers in England and the Holy Empire or installing new guilds across Europe.<ref name="ACBH"/>

In August 1503, the Assassins managed to destroy Cesare's defenses and his [[War Machines]], thwarting Cesare's plans for invasion, and cutting off his funds by killing [[Juan Borgia the Elder|Juan Borgia]] as well as the support of the French army with the death of Octavian de Valois. The Assassins found also a key which opens one of the doors in the Castel Sant'Angelo. After Claudia was inducted to the Brotherhood and Ezio became the [[Mentor]] of the Brotherhood, Cesare returned to Rome to use the Apple to reverse the situation. As his father refused to give him the Apple and learning that he tried to poison him, Cesare killed his father in a rage. Ezio found the Apple and used it against the remnants of Borgia forces during the end of the year. In December 1503 Cesare was imprisoned by the new Pope, [[Julius II]], who became an ally for the Assassins.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Cesare tried to escape but Ezio stopped him and Cesare was sent to a prison in Spain. The Assassins fought the Borgia's diehards who stayed in Rome. In 1506, Cesare escaped from his prison and rallied an army to conquer Spain, Rome and Italy. Ezio Auditore followed him to Valencia and Viana, where he eventually managed to kill Cesare while he led a siege against a castle. After Cesare's death, the Templars in Italy were eradicated, allowing the Assassins to gain more power and influence, as well as acquiring more allies.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Bartolomeo was captured and his cousin, [[Niccolò di Pitigliano]], took the artifact for himself. In 1510, Francesco Vecellio tracked Niccolò in [[Lonigo]], created a revolt against the condottiero. With a team of Assassins, Francesco stroke the manor, mortally wounded Niccolò and took the Shroud for the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

During these more peaceful times, Ezio Auditore left for Masyaf to search for [[Library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad|Altaïr's library]]. During his absence Claudia led the Assassins and contacted [[Desiderius Erasmus]], the Mentor of the [[Northern European Assassins]], who was concerned about the work of [[Martin Luther]] which could trouble the peace in Europe. During the [[Night of Sorrows]], Giovanni stole the artifact and brought it to [[Bombastus]]. Generally, the robes worn by the Italian Apprentices' hearkened back to those worn by the Levantine Assassins, being white and accompanied by a red sash around the waist. If the Apprentice attained the rank of ''Assassin ''he or she would be given white Assassin robes, similar to those of Ezio's own.

A few prominent Assassins within the Italian Brotherhood eschewed the more traditional attire; among these were the Mentor Niccolò Machiavelli, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, Claudia Auditore, Paola, Antonio de Magianis, Teodora Contanto, La Volpe and Rosa.

The Italian Assassins were trained in stealth, combat, pickpocketing, blending and parkour and used most of the tactics created by the Levantine Brotherhood. The Apprentices started off with only a hidden blade, but could acquire armor and more weapons as they gained experience.They could also obtain the hidden gun, and were allowed to carry crossbows after attaining the rank of ''Assassin.'' The Italian Assassins used a variety of weapons, like swords, maces, heavy weapons, crossbows, poisons, throwing knives, bow and arrows, and daggers.

At the end of 1476, under the leadership of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars planned to unite all Italy under Templar's banner, by a series of conspiracies. Mario's brother,[[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], investigated on rumors about a conspiracy against [[Milan]]. One night, Giovanni attacked a group of men led by Rodrigo in [[Florence]]. The [[Grand Master]] flew the scene but Giovanni captured a henchman who revealed under torture that the Templars wanted to assassinated the Duke of Milan, [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza]], to weaken the power of [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] in Florence. Giovanni tried to stop the Templars but arrived to late, Galeazzo was killed and his death was avenged by a guard. Giovanni continued his investigation in Venice, where he found a cryptic letter from the Templars. He delivered the letter himself in Rome where he met Rodrigo, who proposed him to join the Templars cause. Giovanni refused and killed Rodrigo's men, but broke his hidden blade and was wounded by the Grandmaster.<ref name="ACL">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>

After this events, Giovanni made a list of the Templars conspirators and imprisoned [[Francesco de' Pazzi]], a Templar banker who planned to assassinated Lorenzo de' Medici and took Florence for the Templars. But the Templars, with the help of Giovanni's friend, [[Uberto Alberti]], arrested and executed Giovanni and his sons for treason. [[Paola]], the leader of courtesans of Florence and an Assassin, helped the last son of Giovanni, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], in his quest for revenge. She taught him stealth and informed him how and when to kill Uberto.

After Ezio killed the Gonfaloniere, the young man fled Florence with his mother and sister and went to Monteriggioni, where his uncle revealed the truth about his father. Mario taught combat skills and secrets of the Brotherhood to his nephew to convince him to take the place of his father in the search for the Codex pages. Ezio refused to join the Brotherhood but helped Mario to attack [[San Gimignano]], which was controlled by the Templars and killed [[Vieri de' Pazzi]]. Learning the Templars plot against Florence, Ezio resolved to kill every single Templar responsible for the death of his father and brothers and continue the search for the Codex pages. In 1478, Ezio Auditore was helped by [[La Volpe]], the leader to the thieves' guild of Florence and an Assassin, who informed him that a Templar reunion would take place under [[Basilica di Santa Maria Novella]]. Ezio, who eavesdropped the reunion, learned of the Templars' plan to assassinate Lorenzo de' Medici and his [[Giuliano de' Medici|brother]], which would allow them to take power in Florence. Ezio prevented the murder of Lorenzo, and killed Francesco de' Pazzi. After this, the five co-conspirators fled the city. Ezio, with the help of Mario's mercenaries, assassinated every Templar involved in the Pazzi conspiracy. These actions made the Medici powerful allies for the Assassins for many years.<ref name="AC2"/>

Several years later, around 1481, [[Antonio de Magianis]], an Assassin who led the thieves guild of Venice, fought the Templar merchant [[Emilio Barbarigo]], who sought to unite every merchant under his banner to control every district of Venice. Antonio launched an attack on his palazzo, but failed, and many thieves were captured as a result. Ezio, who wanted to kill the Templar for his involvement in his father's death, helped Antonio to reconstruct the guild and killed Emilio in 1485. To take control of Venice, the Templars planned to murder the Doge, [[Giovanni Mocenigo]], and have one of their own take his place. Ezio and Antonio failed to prevent the poisoning and the Templar [[Marco Barbarigo]] was elected Doge.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1486, Ezio returned to Venice and with the help of Antonio and [[Teodora Contanto]], an Assassin who led the courtesans in Venice, killed the new Doge during the Carnavale. The Assassins and the Templars were searching for the pages of the Codex, which contained information about a [[Vatican Vault|vault]], where an object of immense power was hidden. Only "The Prophet" could open the vault with two Pieces of Eden ---- The [[Apple of Eden|Apple]] and The [[Staves of Eden|Staff]]. Rodrigo Borgia believed he was The Prophet and wanted to acquire the artifacts for himself. In 1488, the Templars expedition in Cyprus was successful, and they returned to Venice with The [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple]], with Rodrigo himself travelling to Venice to retrieve the artifact. After learning that the man responsible for the death of his kin was in Venice, Ezio disguised himself as a guard and confronted Rodrigo. Mario and the others Assassins, who supported Ezio during his quest, joined him in the fight. Rodrigo escaped, but the Assassins acquired the Apple. They revealed to Ezio that they were all Assassins and that Ezio was The Prophet himself. After this, Ezio was officially inducted into the Brotherhood.<ref name="AC2"/>

The Assassins decided to hide the Apple in Forlì, a city controlled by [[Caterina Sforza]], an ally of the Assassins. Ezio and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] escorted the Apple to Forlì, but the city was attacked by the Orsi brothers, who were hired by Rodrigo to find the map of [[Girolamo Riario]] which revealed the location of the Codex pages. During the battle, the Orsi were assassinated, although Ezio was wounded and had lost the Apple. In 1497, Ezio returned to Florence, where Savonarola had taken the Apple, used it to control the leader of the city and exiled the Medici. Ezio, Paola, La Volpe and Machiavelli started a revolt against Savonarola's rule. Ezio killed the lieutenants and the other Assassins led the population against Savonarola. One year later, Ezio retrieved the Apple after Savonarola was attacked by the mob.Just before Savonarola was about to be burned alive in public, Ezio assassinated the monk, as he believed that no one should have to suffer such a horrific fate. Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI in 1492, acquired the Staff of Eden, which when combined with the Apple, could open the vault. The Assassins sent [[Perotto Calderon]] as a courier to discover secrets and intercept letters. However the Assassin fell in love with [[Lucrezia Borgia]], the daughter of Rodrigo, and when she become pregnant in 1498, Perotto was imprisoned. The Assassin escaped, and took his deformed [[Giovanni Borgia|son]] to the Shroud of Eden to save him, which was under the protection of the Assassins in Agnadello. Perotto was forced to kill his brothers to heal his son. A group of Assassins was sent to kill Perotto, seen as a traitor to the Brotherhood. After his death, some Assassins, like [[Rinaldo Vitturi]] left the Brotherhood due to the misuse of the Shroud.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

In 1499, the Assassins collected all of the Codex pages and with the Apple, they discovered that the vault was under the [[Sistine Chapel]]. Ezio went to the Vatican and confronted Rodrigo Borgia. After defeating Rodrigo, Ezio spared his life after realizing that killing him him would not solve anything. He entered the vault and met a strange being by the name of [[Minerva]], an individual of the [[Isu|First Civilization]]. She warned the descendant of Ezio, [[Desmond Miles]], that a catastrophic event which would wipe out civilization would occur soon, just like in [[Toba catastrophe|the past]], and that he was the only one who could save the world. After this, a bewildered Ezio left the vault with the Apple and returned with Mario to Monteriggioni. <ref name="AC2"/>

===Liberation of Rome===

In Monteriggioni, Ezio informed the Assassins and his family of what he found in the vault and the fact that he spared Rodrigo, which Machiavelli considered as a mistake and left the Villa. Enraged by the Assassin victory, [[Cesare Borgia]], Rodrigo' son, rallied his army and attacked Monteriggioni. The attack was short but fierce, and the Templars managed to reclaim the Apple of Eden, kill Mario Auditore, and capture Caterina Sforza. Wounded during the battle, Ezio decided to go to Rome to retrieve the Apple and avenge the attack, but fell unconscious during the travel. Niccolò Machiavelli found him and sent him to [[Margherita dei Campi]], to be healed.<ref name="ACBH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

After Ezio regained consciousness, Magherita gave him a new set of robes and equipment offered by Niccolò and informed Ezio that Niccolo wanted to see him. The two Assassins planned to take the Apple and kill Rodrigo and his son. With the help of La Volpe, Bartolomeo d'Alviano and his sister, [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia Auditore]] who took leadership of the courtesans of Rome, the Assassins had a strong network in Rome. In 1501, Ezio went to [[Castel Sant'Angelo]], to find the Apple and kill his targets, but could only save Caterina.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Understanding that the Borgia power was based on Rome, Ezio decided to induct new apprentices into the Brotherhood, recruited from the population of the city, and attack Cesare's lieutenants and allies such as the [[Cento Occhi]], the [[Followers of Romulus]] and the French army led by [[Octavian de Valois]].<ref name="ACBH"/> He created a group of Assassins, led by [[Francesco Vecellio]], which through Italy sabotaged Cesare power, killing his allies and protecting individuals who could opposed against Cesare. They also convinced Rinaldo and other former Assassins to rejoin the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/> Ezio also sent recruits around Europe and Asia to perform missions, as well as helping other Assassin branches in Barcelona, Calicut, Constantinople and Paris against the Templars, helping rulers in England and the Holy Empire or installing new guilds across Europe.<ref name="ACBH"/>

In August 1503, the Assassins managed to destroy Cesare's defenses and his [[War Machines]], thwarting Cesare's plans for invasion, and cutting off his funds by killing [[Juan Borgia the Elder|Juan Borgia]] as well as the support of the French army with the death of Octavian de Valois. The Assassins found also a key which opens one of the doors in the Castel Sant'Angelo. After Claudia was inducted to the Brotherhood and Ezio became the [[Mentor]] of the Brotherhood, Cesare returned to Rome to use the Apple to reverse the situation. As his father refused to give him the Apple and learning that he tried to poison him, Cesare killed his father in a rage. Ezio found the Apple and used it against the remnants of Borgia forces during the end of the year. In December 1503 Cesare was imprisoned by the new Pope, [[Julius II]], who became an ally for the Assassins.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Cesare tried to escape but Ezio stopped him and Cesare was sent to a prison in Spain. The Assassins fought the Borgia's diehards who stayed in Rome. In 1506, Cesare escaped from his prison and rallied an army to conquer Spain, Rome and Italy. Ezio Auditore followed him to Valencia and Viana, where he eventually managed to kill Cesare while he led a siege against a castle. After Cesare's death, the Templars in Italy were eradicated, allowing the Assassins to gain more power and influence, as well as acquiring more allies.<ref name="ACBH"/>

In 1509, Bartolomeo d'Alviano fought in the [[Battle of Agnadello]] to protect the Shroud against the army of [[Louis XII of France]]. Bartolomeo was captured and his cousin, [[Niccolò di Pitigliano]], took the artifact for himself. In 1510, Francesco Vecellio tracked Niccolò in [[Lonigo]], created a revolt against the condottiero. With a team of Assassins, Francesco stroke the manor, mortally wounded Niccolò and took the Shroud for the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

During these more peaceful times, Ezio Auditore left for Masyaf to search for [[Library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad|Altaïr's library]]. During his absence Claudia led the Assassins and contacted [[Desiderius Erasmus]], the Mentor of the [[Northern European Assassins]], who was concerned about the work of [[Martin Luther]] which could trouble the peace in Europe. Generally, the robes worn by the Italian Apprentices' hearkened back to those worn by the Levantine Assassins, being white and accompanied by a red sash around the waist. If the Apprentice attained the rank of ''Assassin ''he or she would be given white Assassin robes, similar to those of Ezio's own.

A few prominent Assassins within the Italian Brotherhood eschewed the more traditional attire; among these were the Mentor Niccolò Machiavelli, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, Claudia Auditore, Paola, Antonio de Magianis, Teodora Contanto, La Volpe and Rosa.

At the end of 1476, under the leadership of [[Rodrigo Borgia]], the Templars planned to unite all Italy under Templar's banner, by a series of conspiracies. Mario's brother,[[Giovanni Auditore da Firenze]], investigated on rumors about a conspiracy against [[Milan]]. One night, Giovanni attacked a group of men led by Rodrigo in [[Florence]]. The [[Grand Master]] flew the scene but Giovanni captured a henchman who revealed under torture that the Templars wanted to assassinated the Duke of Milan, [[Galeazzo Maria Sforza]], to weaken the power of [[Lorenzo de' Medici]] in Florence. Giovanni tried to stop the Templars but arrived to late, Galeazzo was killed and his death was avenged by a guard. Giovanni continued his investigation in Venice, where he found a cryptic letter from the Templars. He delivered the letter himself in Rome where he met Rodrigo, who proposed him to join the Templars cause. Giovanni refused and killed Rodrigo's men, but broke his hidden blade and was wounded by the Grandmaster.<ref name="ACL">''[[Assassin's Creed: Lineage]]''</ref>

After this events, Giovanni made a list of the Templars conspirators and imprisoned [[Francesco de' Pazzi]], a Templar banker who planned to assassinated Lorenzo de' Medici and took Florence for the Templars. But the Templars, with the help of Giovanni's friend, [[Uberto Alberti]], arrested and executed Giovanni and his sons for treason. [[Paola]], the leader of courtesans of Florence and an Assassin, helped the last son of Giovanni, [[Ezio Auditore da Firenze]], in his quest for revenge. She taught him stealth and informed him how and when to kill Uberto.

After Ezio killed the Gonfaloniere, the young man fled Florence with his mother and sister and went to Monteriggioni, where his uncle revealed the truth about his father. Mario taught combat skills and secrets of the Brotherhood to his nephew to convince him to take the place of his father in the search for the Codex pages. Ezio refused to join the Brotherhood but helped Mario to attack [[San Gimignano]], which was controlled by the Templars and killed [[Vieri de' Pazzi]]. Learning the Templars plot against Florence, Ezio resolved to kill every single Templar responsible for the death of his father and brothers and continue the search for the Codex pages. Mario decided to train Ezio through Assassins who would hide their affiliation to let Ezio find the truth himself.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1478, Ezio Auditore was helped by [[La Volpe]], the leader to the thieves' guild of Florence and an Assassin, who informed him that a Templar reunion would take place under [[Basilica di Santa Maria Novella]]. Ezio, who eavesdropped the reunion, learned of the Templars' plan to assassinate Lorenzo de' Medici and his [[Giuliano de' Medici|brother]], which would allow them to take power in Florence. Ezio prevented the murder of Lorenzo, and killed Francesco de' Pazzi. After this, the five co-conspirators fled the city. Ezio, with the help of Mario's mercenaries, assassinated every Templar involved in the Pazzi conspiracy. These actions made the Medici powerful allies for the Assassins for many years.<ref name="AC2"/>

Several years later, around 1481, [[Antonio de Magianis]], an Assassin who led the thieves guild of Venice, fought the Templar merchant [[Emilio Barbarigo]], who sought to unite every merchant under his banner to control every district of Venice. Antonio launched an attack on his palazzo, but failed, and many thieves were captured as a result. Ezio, who wanted to kill the Templar for his involvement in his father's death, helped Antonio to reconstruct the guild and killed Emilio in 1485. To take control of Venice, the Templars planned to murder the Doge, [[Giovanni Mocenigo]], and have one of their own take his place. Ezio and Antonio failed to prevent the poisoning and the Templar [[Marco Barbarigo]] was elected Doge.<ref name="AC2"/>

In 1486, Ezio returned to Venice and with the help of Antonio and [[Teodora Contanto]], an Assassin who led the courtesans in Venice, killed the new Doge during the Carnavale. Marco's brother, [[Agostino Barbarigo]], who was an ally of the Assassins, took his place as Doge. The Templars took the Arsenale to make a diversion while they traveled for Cyprus. [[Bartolomeo d'Alviano]], an Assassin and a condottiero, attacked the Arsenale, but was captured. Ezio saved him and his men and launched a surprise attack on the Arsenale. He killed [[Silvio Barbarigo]] and his bodyguard, [[Dante Moro]], who revealed that the Templars were in search of something in Cyprus.<ref name="AC2"/>

===Search for the vault===

The Assassins and the Templars were searching for the pages of the Codex, which contained information about a [[Vatican Vault|vault]], where an object of immense power was hidden. Only "The Prophet" could open the vault with two Pieces of Eden ---- The [[Apple of Eden|Apple]] and The [[Staves of Eden|Staff]]. Rodrigo Borgia believed he was The Prophet and wanted to acquire the artifacts for himself. In 1488, the Templars expedition in Cyprus was successful, and they returned to Venice with The [[Ezio's Apple of Eden|Apple]]. Rodrigo himself went to Venice to take the artifact. After learning that the man who was responsible for the death of his kin was in Venice, Ezio disguised himself as a guard and confronted Rodrigo. Mario and the others Assassins, who supported Ezio during his quest, joined him in the fight. Rodrigo escaped, but the Assassins acquired the Apple. They revealed to Ezio that they were all Assassins and that Ezio was The Prophet himself. After this, Ezio was officially inducted into the Brotherhood.<ref name="AC2"/>

The Assassins decided to hide the Apple in Forlì, a city controled by [[Caterina Sforza|Caterina Sforz]], an ally of the Assassins. Ezio and [[Niccolò Machiavelli]] escorted the Apple to Forlì, but the city was attacked by the Orsi brothers, who were hired by Rodrigo to find the map of [[Girolamo Riario]] which revealed the location of the Codex pages. During the battle, the Orsi were assassinated, although Ezio was wounded and had lost the Apple. He later learned that the Apple was taken by a Florentine monk with a missing finger, [[Girolamo Savonarola]]. In 1491, during his search for the Apple, Ezio helped the [[Spanish Assassins]], who were hunted by the [[Spanish Inquisition]], who in turn, worked for the Templars. He saved the Assassins and rescued the king [[Muhammad XII of Granada]], which stopped the war between Spain and Grenada. In 1497, Ezio returned to Florence, where Savonarola had taken the Apple, used it to control the leader of the city and exiled the Medici. Ezio, Paola, La Volpe and Machiavelli started a revolt against Savonarola's rule. Ezio killed the lieutenants and the other Assassins led the population against Savonarola. One year later, Ezio retrieved the Apple after Savonarola was attacked by the mob.Just before Savonarola was about to be burned alive in public, Ezio assassinated the monk, as he believed that no one should have to suffer such a horrific fate. Before the population, Ezio demanded to the crowd to follow their own free will, and not anyone else like Savonarola or the Medici, or himself.<ref name="Bonfire of the Vanities">''Assassin's Creed II'' - ''[[Bonfire of the Vanities (DLC)|Bonfire of the Vanities]]''</ref>

Rodrigo Borgia, who became Pope Alexander VI in 1492, acquired the Staff of Eden, which with the Apple, could open the vault. The Assassins sent [[Perotto Calderon]] as a courier to discover secret and to intercept letter. But the Assassin fell in love with [[Lucrezia Borgia]], the daughter of Rodrigo, and when she become pregnant in 1498, Perotto was imprisoned. The Assassin escaped from his prison, and took his [[Giovanni Borgia|son]], who was disformed, to saved him with the Shroud of Eden, which was under the protection of the Assassins in Agnadello. Perotto was forced to kill his brothers to heal his son. A group of Assassins was sent to kill Perotto, saw as a traitor of the Creed. After his death, some Assassins, like [[Rinaldo Vitturi]] left the Brotherhood, considering the Assassins didn't used the Shroud as they must.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

In 1499, the Assassins collected all the pages of the Codex and with the Apple, they discovered that the vault was under the [[Sistine Chapel]]. Ezio went to the Vatican and confronted Rodrigo Borgia. After the fight, Ezio spared his life and entered in the vault and met [[Minerva]], an individual of the [[Isu|First Civilization]] who wanted to warn the descendant of Ezio, [[Desmond Miles]], that a catastrophe would came soon as it already happened in[[Toba catastrophe| the past]] and that he had to find temples to save the world. After this, Ezio left the vault with the Apple and returned with Mario to Monteriggioni. <ref name="AC2"/>

===Liberation of Rome===

In Monteriggioni, Ezio informed the Assassins and his family of what he found in the vault and the fact that he spared Rodrigo, which Machiavelli considered as a mistake and left the Villa. Enraged by the Assassin victory, [[Cesare Borgia]], Rodrigo' son, rallied his army and attacked Monteriggioni. The attack was short but fierce, and the Templars managed to reclaim the Apple of Eden, kill Mario Auditore, and capture Caterina Sforza. Wounded during the battle, Ezio decided to go to Rome to retrieve the Apple and avenge the attack, but fell unconscious during the travel. Niccolò Machiavelli found him and sent him to [[Margherita dei Campi]], to be healed.<ref name="ACBH">''[[Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood]]''</ref>

After Ezio regained consciousness, Magherita gave him a new set of robes and equipment offered by Niccolò and informed Ezio that Niccolo wanted to see him. The two Assassins planned to take the Apple and kill Rodrigo and his son. With the help of La Volpe, Bartolomeo d'Alviano and his sister, [[Claudia Auditore da Firenze|Claudia Auditore]] who took leadership of the courtesans of Rome, the Assassins had a strong network in Rome. In 1501, Ezio went to [[Castel Sant'Angelo]], to find the Apple and kill his targets, but could only save Caterina.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Understanding that the Borgia power was based on Rome, Ezio decided to induct new apprentices into the Brotherhood, recruited from the population of the city, and attack Cesare's lieutenants and allies such as the [[Cento Occhi]], the [[Followers of Romulus]] and the French army led by [[Octavian de Valois]].<ref name="ACBH"/> He created a group of Assassins, led by [[Francesco Vecellio]], which through Italy sabotaged Cesare power, killing his allies and protecting individuals who could opposed against Cesare. They also convinced Rinaldo and other former Assassins to rejoin the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/> Ezio also sent recruits around Europe and Asia to perform missions, as well as helping other Assassin branches in Barcelona, Calicut, Constantinople and Paris against the Templars, helping rulers in England and the Holy Empire or installing new guilds across Europe.<ref name="ACBH"/>

In August 1503, the Assassins managed to destroy Cesare's defenses and his [[War Machines]], thwarting Cesare's plans for invasion, and cutting off his funds by killing [[Juan Borgia the Elder|Juan Borgia]] as well as the support of the French army with the death of Octavian de Valois. The Assassins found also a key which opens one of the doors in the Castel Sant'Angelo. After Claudia was inducted to the Brotherhood and Ezio became the [[Mentor]] of the Brotherhood, Cesare returned to Rome to use the Apple to reverse the situation. As his father refused to give him the Apple and learning that he tried to poison him, Cesare killed his father in a rage. Ezio found the Apple and used it against the remnants of Borgia forces during the end of the year. In December 1503 Cesare was imprisoned by the new Pope, [[Julius II]], who became an ally for the Assassins.<ref name="ACBH"/>

Cesare tried to escape but Ezio stopped him and Cesare was sent to a prison in Spain. The Assassins fought the Borgia's diehards who stayed in Rome. In 1506, Cesare escaped from his prison and rallied an army to conquer Spain, Rome and Italy. Ezio Auditore followed him to Valencia and Viana, where he eventually managed to kill Cesare while he led a siege against a castle. After Cesare's death, the Templars in Italy were eradicated, allowing the Assassins to gain more power and influence, as well as acquiring more allies.<ref name="ACBH"/>

After the destruction of the Templars in Italy, Ezio formed stronger ways of communication for the Assassins from Sicily to Venice and created more standard training methods for new Assassin recruits.

In 1509, Bartolomeo d'Alviano fought in the [[Battle of Agnadello]] to protect the Shroud against the army of [[Louis XII of France]]. Bartolomeo was captured and his cousin, [[Niccolò di Pitigliano]], took the artifact for himself. In 1510, Francesco Vecellio tracked Niccolò in [[Lonigo]], created a revolt against the condottiero. With a team of Assassins, Francesco stroke the manor, mortally wounded Niccolò and took the Shroud for the Brotherhood.<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

During these more peaceful times, Ezio Auditore left for Masyaf to search for [[Library of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad|Altaïr's library]]. During his absence Claudia led the Assassins and contacted [[Desiderius Erasmus]], the Mentor of the [[Northern European Assassins]], who was concerned about the work of [[Martin Luther]] which could trouble the peace in Europe. In 1519, Giovanni Borgia, the son of Perotto Calderon and Lucrezia Borgia, who became an Assassin, went to Mexico with the troops of [[Hernán Cortés]] to find a Piece of Eden, a [[Crystal Skulls|Crystal Skull]] which was used by the Aztecs for sacrifices. During the [[Night of Sorrows]], Giovanni stole the artifact and brought it to [[Bombastus]]. Later in 1527, Giovanni was sent to Paris to search the second half of the [[Book of Abraham]], which contained occult knowledge. Giovanni, with [[Maria Amiel]], took the second half and discovered Pythagorean symbols. The two lovers went to the [[Temple of Pythagoras]] and contacted an individual from the First Civilization, [[Consus]].<ref name="Project Legacy"/>

== Appearance ==
Generally, the robes worn by the Italian Apprentices' hearkened back to those worn by the Levantine Assassins, being white and accompanied by a red sash around the waist. If the Apprentice attained the rank of ''Assassin ''he or she would be given white Assassin robes, similar to those of Ezio's own.

A few prominent Assassins within the Italian Brotherhood eschewed the more traditional attire; among these were the Mentor Niccolò Machiavelli, Bartolomeo d'Alviano, Claudia Auditore, Paola, Antonio de Magianis, Teodora Contanto, La Volpe and Rosa.

The Italian Assassins were trained in stealth, combat, pickpocketing, blending and parkour and used most of the tactics created by the Levantine Brotherhood. The Apprentices started off with one hidden blade and would later get another and a pistol when attaining the rank of ''Assassin.'' The Italian Assassins used a variety of weapons, like swords, maces, heavy weapons, crossbows, poisons, throwing knives, bow and arrows, and daggers.

Jack was born and raised in the Whitechapel district of London, where he lived alongside his mother until she was murdered by the [[Templars]] of [[Crawford Starrick]]. Traumatized by her death, Jack was placed in [[Lambeth Asylum]], where poor treatment and negligence only further aggravated his mental instability. After the death of Starrick in 1868, he was liberated from the asylum and brought into the Assassin fold by [[Jacob Frye]] to be trained among a selection of new [[Apprentices|initiates]].

Around 1873, he traveled with Jacob and the other initiates to [[India]] in order to learn the fear tactics of the [[Indian Assassins|Indian Brotherhood]], a group that Jacob's sister, [[Evie Frye]], had joined.

Upon returning to London, Jack began to develop an extremist view of the Assassins' mission. Eventually, Jack usurped control of the [[Rooks]] from Jacob and killed anyone sent to deter him. Radicalizing his followers, Whitechapel – the center of Jack's operations – descended into a cesspool of crime and depravity.

During the [[Whitechapel murders|Autumn of Terror]], Jack murdered a number of Assassins sent after him by Jacob, including "[[Mary Ann Nichols (Assassin)|Mary Ann Nichols]]", "[[Annie Chapman]]", "[[Elizabeth Stride]]" and "[[Catherine Eddowes]]". With these murders, Jack, under the pseudonym of "Jack the Ripper", started to attract media attention; [[Arthur Weaversbrook]] in particular – under duress due to Jack having kidnapped his son – began to publish Jack's letters for the public to inquire.

Having left a message for Jacob nearby, after his former mentor had demanded that Weaversbrook stop publishing the Ripper's letters, Jack trailed and kidnapped a fleeing Jacob, defeating him in combat and locking him up beneath Lambeth Asylum.

Before he was kidnapped, Jacob requested by letter that Evie return to London. With her return, Jack saw the gradual disruption of his plans. He was eventually lured out of the shadows by the assassination of [[Olwyn Owers]] at Evie's hands; after Evie assassinated his right-hand woman, Jack killed all of the occupants at [[Owers Manor]] and subsequently framed the former for the massacre.

As part of his mission, Jack kept hostages in old Navy [[ships]] and forced them to write to their families, making demands that were to be met in exchange for the lives of their abducted loved ones. This part of his plan too was thwarted by Evie, as she dismantled his private [[Prison hulk|prison]], assassinated his [[John Billingsworth|Chief Warder]], and informed the police about the abducted hostages. Consequently, Jack resolved to eliminate any witnesses at [[Deptford]] that knew of his actions as well as any evidence linking him to the Assassins, in an effort to protect the Brotherhood and his new Creed.

Jack staged a reunion between the Frye twins at Lambeth Asylum, with the intention of killing Evie. He lured Evie to the site of his mother's murder and left her with clues and cues indicating his true location of the asylum. In preparation for her arrival, he killed prominent Lambeth Asylum staff who knew of his childhood confinement there, including his abusive nurse, a doctor and the asylum's director, and destroyed all records of his stay.

In addition, to slow Evie's approach, Jack released all of the asylum's inmates. While he held an advantage over Evie with his superior strength and aid from the inmates, Evie was able to catch Jack off-guard, and fatally wounded Jack with his own trademark dagger. Jack told Evie that she was no different than him before succumbing to his wounds, ending his reign of terror.

Following his defeat in late 1888, Jack's true identity, or even the fact that he had been killed, was never revealed by Inspector [[Frederick Abberline]] of the [[Metropolitan Police Service]]. This was done at the behest of Evie Frye in order to protect the Assassins from discovery and public backlash, due to Jack having been an Assassin himself.

The trauma of losing his mother and his subsequent incarceration at Lambeth Asylum had a lasting effect on Jack's mental stability. Jack's views on the Assassin Order quickly developed; he came to the conclusion that Jacob was responsible, however indirectly, for the death of his mother and the abuse he faced at Lambeth Asylum. He also began to develop a strong disdain for [[the Creed]], considering a creed that could not protect its own to be a dead one.

He brutally murdered all opposition sent against him – Assassins commonly under the guise of local [[Courtesans|prostitutes]] – in order to send a message to the Frye twins. He was also meticulous in his plan to destroy all evidence of his existence and prior life, going so far as to do away with a number of Lambeth Asylum staff who might have had any living memory of him as well as documents pertaining to his incarceration at the asylum.

In spite of his actions against the London Assassins, Jack was careful not to compromise the Brotherhood; despite his lack of respect for the contemporary Creed, he did come to believe in his own idealized version of the philosophy and still saw the Order as a means to an end. While most of his victims managed to hide their [[Assassin ring]]s before death, at least one had their finger forcibly removed postmortem in order to hide their connection to the Order. He also destroyed any evidence of his connection to the Assassins at Deptford after his plans there were foiled by Evie Frye.

Jack was also very vindictive and held deep, bitter grudges against those who he believed had wronged him. This was seen when he brutally massacred most if not all of the Lambeth Asylum's staff as revenge for the torment he underwent there.

Jack was a highly skilled Assassin, having been well trained by his mentor, Jacob Frye, while still in his formative years. He possessed a vast skill-set, including armed and [[Fists|unarmed combat]], stealth, public assassination techniques, proficiency in [[firearms]] and [[freerunning]]. By the time of the Whitechapel murders, he was capable of holding his own against and even overpowering the Frye twins, being well-nigh impervious to frontal attacks in the heat of battle. He also possessed an indomitable will, never giving up on the task at hand and approaching situations with utmost focus and care.

His repertoire also consisted of equipment and skills typically exclusive to the Assassins, such as the [[Hidden Blade]], [[throwing knives]], [[Poison darts|hallucinogenic darts]], [[Bombs#Smoke bombs|smoke bombs]], the [[Victorian era]] [[Ziplines|rope launcher]], and the rare sixth sense [[Eagle Vision]]. He could use his Eagle Vision to track down recently lost individuals or identify key targets.

Most notable of Jack's skills was his extremist use of the Indian Brotherhood's fear tactics. Rather than discretely dealing with targets, he would use excess brutality in public assassinations to instill fear in the hearts of London's populace. In combat, he would use [[fear bombs]], [[spikes]] and jarring, psychotic screams to frighten and disrupt the composure of his opponents.

As an extension of his prowess for fear and intimidation, Jack also had a penchant for manipulation. Due to his collusion with Olwyn Owers, Jack's eyes and ears within London, his manipulations and influence spread rapidly across the city. His operations gradually began to reach well beyond the scope of prostitution, to kidnapping, extortion, and murder of the London elite.

Evie was born four minutes before her brother Jacob. Due to their mother [[Cecily Frye|Cecily]]'s death after childbirth, the twins were raised by their grandmother in Crawley until the age of six, after which they were trained by their father, [[Ethan Frye]], in the ways of the Assassins. Upon gaining access to the laboratory, Evie assassinated Brewster, who was experimenting with the artifact on a machine and destabilizing it, causing the machine to malfunction and explode. She later returned to Westhouse and Jacob to report her accomplishment. The twins shared impatience on traveling to London, an idea which Westhouse disagreed, warning the siblings that it was not Ethan's wish for them. Adamant to continue her father's legacy, Evie accompanied Jacob in hitching a train heading to London.<ref name="ACS"/>

The twins arrived in [[Whitechapel]] and decided to seek out the [[Assassin leader]] [[Jayadeep Mir|Henry Green]] who apprised them on the Templar control over London. Evie contradicted her brother's proposal in creating a gang called the Rooks to challenge the [[Blighters]], instead suggesting to recover Pieces of Eden. The trio bumped into the writer Charles Dickens and Blighters thugs. Evie joined her brother in driving a [[Wagon|carriage]] to distract them in chasing Henry, destroying Blighters' carriages in the process. Returning to Henry's shop, the Assassins discussed their contacts within the city.<ref name="ACS"/>

They later met with a disguised Frederick Abberline, the Chief of Metropolitan Police Service in a back alley. Abberline gave them a list of notable Blighters members whom they kidnapped. Following this, Evie and Jacob contacted their young ally [[Clara O'Dea]] in Babylon Alley for information in exchange for freeing children from labor in the factories. In return for his aid, Evie assisted Bell in setting up a free telegraph line for companies competing against Starrick Telegraph Company to use, by installing new fuses in the [[Elizabeth Tower|Clock Tower]] of the [[Palace of Westminster]], while at the same time suggesting that he rename his phonetic telegraph as the telephone. Returning to Bell's carriage, the latter showed Evie his [[Bombs|smoke bombs]] and provided her the formula. Evie then made her way to a Blighter stronghold to loot metal components and returned to Bell's workshop. The twins headed to their hideout where they were greeted by [[Ned Wynert]], who gave them his business card. The Assassins began planning their next move, Evie focusing on recovering precursor artifacts.<ref name="ACS"/>

Seeing Jacob's plan to destroy the Templars a brash and reckless idea, the siblings were in disagreement. They headed to Alexander Graham Bell who added a dart mechanism to their gauntlets. They aided the inventor by recovering cable lines taken by the Blighters in the College Wharf, in addition to discovering a poison shipment from [[Crawford Starrick]].<ref name="ACS"/>

The twins decided to recover an artifact from Lucy Thorne's shipments. As Jacob eliminated the guards, Evie searched the chest and found documents and a [[Edward Kenway's journal|book]] with an [[Assassin insignia]] on the cover. Unfortunately, more Blighters came, forcing the twins to take the carriage. Evie took the defense while Jacob took the reins. Ultimately, they were forced to abandon the carriage, along with the documents, but Evie managed to keep the Assassin book.<ref name="ACS"/>

After returning to the hideout, Evie investigated the journal with Henry Green, finding a hidden map using her [[Eagle Vision]] which led to the Assassin [[Edward Kenway]]'s [[Kenway Mansion|mansion]]. They discovered that Lucy Thorne and the Blighters had taken control of the mansion which forced them to sneak inside and scrutinize the Kenway's memorabilia for clues. Evie deciphered a code on the piano which opened a hatch in the floor. The Assassins managed to recover documents and an artifact before the Templars discovered the hatch, escaping through tunnels below the mansion.<ref name="ACS"/>

Continuing their fight against Starrick and his control of the press, Evie and Jacob returned to Bell's laboratory where the latter told them Starrick's efforts of bribery to coax the inventor to his side. This caused him to invent voltaic bombs to stun assailants and offered them to the twins with insulators to protect the Assassins from harm. Soon enough, the infuriated Blighters arrived; they took this as an opportunity to test the bombs as Bell distracted them through talking.<ref name="ACS"/>

The twins further aided the inventor in the telegraph station to keep Starrick from spreading false information throughout London and show people the truth about his operations by distracting the guards and defending Bell with their newly acquired weapon.<ref name="ACS"/>

Much later, Evie visited the [[Lambeth Asylum]] after Jacob's assassination of Dr. [[John Elliotson]] where she saw an ill Clara O'Dea who came searching for medicine for the children in her care. However, Clara fainted in Evie's arms. Fortunately, the door to the hospital was opened by a woman who identified herself as Florence Nightingale and asked the Assassin to recover supplies for the cure.<ref name="ACS"/>

Evie continued her investigation, with the documents leading her to a contraption for a puzzle in the [[St Paul's Cathedral]]. After solving the gear puzzle, she discovered a precursor necklace at the top of the cathedral. Unfortunately, Lucy Thorne arrived and the two dueled which resulted in Thorne escaping with the necklace.<ref name="ACS"/>

===Search for the Shroud===

Sometime after Jacob's assassination of [[Pearl Attaway]] and shutting down of her omnibus company, Evie visited Southwark, finding [[Edward Bayley]] being harassed by the Blighters. She chased the Blighters on a carriage as defended Bayley. The pair rode to Attaway's former omnibus factory to steal the deed and return it to Bayley, safeguarding the businessman's family from the Templars. Grateful to his savior, Bayley introduced Evie to the founders of the London General Omnibus Company, notifying her of their endeavor to supply the needed omnibuses for the city. Realizing that her brother had caused more problems for the citizens with his assassinations, Evie warned Jacob of the consequences of his actions.<ref name="ACS"/>

Much later, Evie and Henry Green researched the precursor necklace Lucy Thorne stole. Green commented that it matched the casket owned by Queen Victoria kept in the [[Tower of London]]. Evie infiltrated the fortress, witnessing the disguised Blighters taking the place of aware guards and searching for the casket. Eventually, she managed to assassinate Lucy Thorne who mocked the Assassins of not using the capabilities of the precursor artifacts. The Royal Guards eventually regained control, forcing the Blighters into combat and Evie to escape on a [[Riverboats|riverboat]].<ref name="ACS"/>

Evie met with Frederick Abberline, learning from the sergeant that Jacob's actions had caused major turmoil in the citizens of London, despite Evie's warnings to her brother. She was forced to recover the currency printing plates, which Jacob was accused of stealing. Abberline also requested her to destroy counterfeit notes while she was at it. Evie then tailed the counterfeiter's carriage and finished Abberline's request.<ref name="ACS"/>

Continuing her search, Evie and Henry congregated with the Prince Escort [[Duleep Singh]] who had a lead on the location of the Shroud's [[Buckingham Palace crypt|crypt]] in [[Buckingham Palace]]. Duleep informed the pair that their plans were removed by Starrick but he had their location. Henry provided a distraction for Evie to sneak past the guards and recover the documents. Still unable to find the documents, Evie kidnapped a Templar guard only to discover that Henry had been kidnapped.<ref name="ACS"/>

Abandoning her mission, Evie decided to rescue Henry instead. Some of Clara O'Dea's urchins witnessed his kidnapping and told Evie to follow the cart's wobbly tracks. She had to interview witnesses to unveil Henry's location. Evie finally tracked him down the tunnels beneath the church and escorted him to escape. She advised her fellow Assassin to let Florence Nightingale heal his head injury while she contacted the Maharaja again.<ref name="ACS"/>

Eventually, Evie aided her brother and the Rooks in taking control of London's boroughs during gang wars against the Blighters by eliminating their Templar leaders [[Bloody Nora]], [[Lilla Graves]], [[Victor Lynch]], [[Octavia Plumb]], [[Cletus Strain]] and [[Edith Swinebourne]].<ref name="ACS"/>

===Assassinating Crawford Starrick===
With most of the Templars now eliminated by Jacob and Starrick the only threat left, Evie discussed the situation of the Shroud in the palace, only to find Jacob uninterested. Annoyed, she scolded her brother with his reckless planning and mistakes Evie was forced to fix. Evie mentioned their father, much to Jacob's irritation and the twins argued. Henry calmed them down and notified them of a ball to be held in the palace which Starrick was planning to enter, stealing the Shroud and eliminating the heads of church and government.<ref name="ACS"/>

Using this as an opportunity to recover the Piece of Eden, Evie and Jacob joined forces and invited [[Benjamin Disraeli|Benjamin]] and [[Mary Anne Disraeli]], the prime minister and his wife, to their hideout. There, they expressed their need to enter the ball and offered to steal the invitations of [[Catherine Gladstone|Catherine]] and [[William Gladstone]], which the couple gladly approved. As Jacob recovered the invitations, Evie visited the Maharaja for a second set of plans.<ref name="ACS"/>

Duleep Singh told her, however, that he had a matter of urgency that would require stealth and speed - acquiring a royal carriage to drive politicians to their destinations in exchange for the information. Evie complied as Singh rode the carriage and talked to the politicians as they rode around London. With the job completed, the Maharaja told her of the plans' location with the Queen.<ref name="ACS"/>

The twins successfully managed to infiltrate the ball using the Gladstones' carriage and invitations. Evie then headed off to locate the plans in a white drawing room. Due to the restrictions of her dress, Evie was forced to kidnap one of the royal guards to get inside the room and steal the plans. On her way back down to the party, she bumped into Mary Anne Disraeli who introduced her to the Queen, who knew of their dealings with Gladstone.<ref name="ACS"/>

Politely excusing herself, Evie continued her way towards the vault entrance only to be grabbed by Crawford Starrick himself. The Templar [[Grand Master]] offered her a dance and told her that people would never change and that as soon as the dance ended, the snipers he had in place would end her life. Fortunately, Jacob came to her rescue, eliminating the snipers with his recovered weapons. However, Starrick managed to steal the precursor necklace from Evie.<ref name="ACS"/>

After changing her clothes, she immediately dashed towards the [[Buckingham Palace vault|vault]] to save Jacob from the hands of Starrick. However, Starrick had activated the vault's precursor defense mechanism which sent Jacob sprawling to the floor. Evie fought the Templar one on one but the Shroud prevented her from dealing much damage. Crawford grabbed Evie by the neck but was stopped by Jacob. After exchanging more blows with Starrick, the two of them were trapped.<ref name="ACS" />

Fortunately, Henry Green arrived, throwing a [[Throwing knives|knife]] at the Templar. Joining the fight, Henry too was knocked off his feet by the Templar. Evie and Jacob joined forces to remove the Shroud and eventually assassinate Starrick. By working together, the rift between the twins vanished. As Jacob returned the Shroud, Evie aided Henry and the two Assassins shared a kiss.<ref name="ACS" />

Shortly thereafter, the three Assassins met with Queen Victoria, who was grateful to her saviors. She knighted them to her Order of the Sacred Garter and promised to call upon them for more work in the future. The twins then raced off to their hideout, leaving Henry behind.<ref name="ACS" />

===Pursuing Jack the Ripper===
Following the defeat of Crawford Starrick, Evie and Jacob continued to operate in London with the siblings ending their relationship with Queen Victoria to avoid helping further Britain's imperial interests. However, after her betrothal to Henry, Evie eventually relocated to [[India]] and became affiliated with [[Indian Assassins]]. In 1888, however, Evie was summoned by Jacob in the wake of the [[Whitechapel murders]]. After returning to London, she converged with Inspector Frederick Abberline, who brought her up to speed with the serial killer [[Jack the Ripper]] and informed her that Jacob was nowhere to be found. She then followed the Inspector to the murder scene of the Ripper's first victim, [[Mary Ann Nichols]]. Abberline informed her that the woman murdered was not the Mary Ann Nichols he knew. Upon inspection, Evie found an Assassin ring and deduced that the victim was an [[Mary Ann Nichols (Assassin)|undercover Assassin]].<ref name="JR" />

Having been tipped off by Abberline, Evie went to investigate Jacob's Whitechapel lodgings, in hopes of discovering a clue as to where the Ripper was. There, she found one of the Ripper's letters, a photograph of her, Jacob, Henry and an initiate nicknamed "Jack the Lad" in India, and a letter to her hidden under a statuette of the goddess Kali. After reading Jacob's letter, Evie sought the [[Courtesans|prostitute]] [[Nellie]], who had been escorted to the Kenway Mansion where Lady [[Olwyn Owers]] was giving a speech. She spoke with Nellie and learned that killing Lady Owers was necessary to find Jacob. Evie then chased a carriage thought to have been occupied by Lady Owers, and upon hijacking it, realized Nellie was inside. Nellie then told Evie that Lady Owers had fled to her [[Owers Manor|manor]] northwest of London.<ref name="JR" />

Evie infiltrated the manor and assassinated Lady Owers, procuring a photograph with scratched out individuals save for [[Arthur Weaversbrook]]. Evie concluded that Weaversbrook was to be kidnapped and returned to London to save him. She met with Abberline to find out through newspaper that she had been framed for a massacre at Owers Manor that took place shortly after her departure. She then found and intercepted a tense Weaversbrook near St. Paul's, who informed her that the Ripper had his son and led her to the young Weaversbrook's last location near the docks. After rescuing Weaversbrook's son, Evie learned that Jack was keeping others hostage in old hulk prison ships and an abandoned garrison in Deptford.<ref name="JR" />

Traveling downriver to the Deptford docks, Evie questioned the hostages found on the prison ships, who told here they were being forced to write letters to their family's with demands from the Ripper. She then decided to assassinate chief warder [[John Billingsworth]] of the nearby garrison. Fatally wounded soon after, a dying Billingsworth informed Evie of Jack's tutelage by Jacob. She then telephoned the Metropolitan Police Service, who informed her that Jack had struck again, and requested they send men to the docks to free the hostages.<ref name="JR" />

Soon after her return to the city, Evie rendezvoused with Inspector Abberline and his officers at the murder scene of [[Mary Kelly]]. Through further investigation, Evie was able to find a message left for her by Jack meant to lead her to the scenes of his first victims. At the murder scenes of [[Annie Chapman]] and [[Catherine Eddowes]] and [[Elizabeth Stride]], Evie discovered their tossed Assassin rings and, at the latter scene, yet another message from Jack, which in turn led her to the scene of his mother's murder. There, she was caught off guard by an unexpected [[Fear bombs|fear bomb]], which induced hallucinations in her mind. Once the hallucinations wore off, Evie came to the conclusion that Jack was at the Lambeth Asylum.<ref name="JR" />

With the inmates of Lambeth Asylum released, Evie sneaked by a throng of lunatics undetected and made her way to the madhouse's lowest area. Having found a heavily wounded Jacob imprisoned in a cell, she first went into the basement to face off against Jack. Initially unable to face Jack in direct combat, Evie used stealth and cunning to ambush Jack until she eventually took his dagger and, with a volley of cuts and stabs, brought an end to the Ripper's life. Thereafter, she went back to her nearly unconscious brother and was met by Inspector Abberline, with reporters in tow. In order to protect the Brotherhood from backlash and discovery, Evie asked Abberline to keep Jack's death and identity a secret, not wanting the public to know of the Ripper's Assassin allegiance.<ref name="JR" />

Evie's DNA was somehow retrieved by [[Abstergo Industries|Abstergo]] prior to November of 2015 because of her involvement with one of the Shrouds of Eden, which Abstergo intended to use in the [[Phoenix Project]], and researched by one of Abstergo's analysts to find the Shroud's location. This allowed it's recovery after a fight with the Assassins in the Buckingham palace's vault.<ref name="ACS" />

Her actions, alongside Jacob's, led to the reconstruction of the British Assassins' presence in London, which meant the downfall of the Templars' control over the city.<ref name="ACS" />

A true tactician and firm believer in the teachings of the Brotherhood, Evie took to the lessons of her father in a way that her brother did not, being more studious and more interested in the lore and history of the Assassins.

By contrast, Evie's brother Jacob was much quicker to spring into action, yet his plans lacked sufficient forethought as a result. While the twins' means were frequently at odds, their motivations were the same, and the pair were at their most effective when they worked together, as they balanced each other out. She was also very reverent of her father, often citing his teachings and using them to criticize Jacob's actions. She planned her missions carefully and patiently, considering every angle to ensure the best chance of success. Sometimes, this worked against her, as it meant that she was slow to act. Evie would occasionally adopt Jacob's approach, as seen when she immediately accepted [[Karl Marx]]'s offer without further consideration, something that momentarily perplexed her twin.<ref name="ACS" />

A Master Assassin proficient with the Hidden Blade, Evie was able to assassinate her targets skilfully and stealthily. She excelled at masking her presence, to such an extent that [[guards]] were unable to notice her as long as she remained still.<ref name="ACS" />

A skilled [[Freerunning|freerunner]], she was able to instantly scale the building of London as well as natural elements - including trees - with relative ease, as such she was able to transverse over and under several obstacles as well as moving terrains. Additionally she proved to be a capable [[Swimming|swimmer]]. Evie also proved efficient in [[pickpocketing]] and [[lockpicking]].

As the carrying of weapons openly was forbidden at the time, she relied on an arsenal of hidden tools, much like her brother. Evie was capable of using dual Hidden Blades, a [[cane-sword]], a [[Kukri]], [[firearms]], [[brass knuckles]], throwing knives, smoke bombs and voltaic bombs, which let loose a blast of electricity upon impact. Her Hidden Blade was also equipped with a rope launcher, allowing her to scale buildings quickly as well as create [[ziplines]], and could fire [[Poison darts|hallucinogenic darts]].<ref name="ACS" />

While her brother specialized in brutal and straightforward weaponry like the brass knuckles and the firearms, Evie's stealthy nature led her to prefer more subtle tools like the cane-sword and throwing knives. She was especially proficient with the latter, being able to carry a larger amount and hit targets at a greater range than her brother.<ref name="ACS" />

After moving to India, Evie learned the Indian Brotherhood's fear tactics, consisting of using fear-inducing hallucinogenics with [[spikes]] and [[fear bombs]] as a method of non-lethally dealing with groups of enemies. She also began utilizing non-lethal tactics more frequently, often incapacitating opponents that weren't her targets instead of killing them.<ref name="JR" />

Evie also possessed the rare ability of Eagle Vision.<ref name="ACS" />

During her time in London, Evie grew increasingly fond of her fellow Assassin Henry Green, with whom she frequently worked together in studying and locating the Pieces of Eden. Eager to have this partnership continue beyond research, she encouraged him to go out in the field with her, despite his own beliefs that he was not as well suited to it. When Henry later disappeared during one of their missions, Evie abandoned the original objective to save him from his captors, a decision she later came to question.<ref name="ACS" />

Realizing that her feelings for Henry affected her ability to judge situations objectively, which her father had warned her against during her youth and which Jacob had teasingly reminded her of, Evie broke off the partnership and went out into the field by herself once more. However, after speaking extensively with Duleep Singh, she came to question her strict adherence to her father's words.<ref name="ACS" />

When Henry came to her and Jacob's rescue in their final confrontation with Starrick, Evie realized she wanted to be with him after all; once Starrick had been assassinated, she thanked Henry for saving them both, before kissing him. Sometime later, Henry proposed to her with a bouquet of flowers at the train hideout, to which she accepted.<ref name="ACS" /> After a few years, Evie and Henry decided to travel to India and learn the techniques of the local Brotherhood, leaving Jacob to watch over London.<ref name="JR" />

*Evie's name is of biblical origin, being an alternate form of Eve, which means ''life''. The word Eve also refers to Adam and Eve, thought to be the first two humans made by god in Abrahamic religions. Frye is a derivative of the English word ''free''.
*Evie is the first playable female character in one of the [[Assassin's Creed (series)|''Assassin's Creed'' franchise]]'s main entries and the third playable female character in the franchise as a whole, having been preceded by [[Aveline de Grandpré]] and [[Shao Jun]].
*According to Henry, Evie was the same height as Jacob. Given the wanted poster of Jacob on the Charing Cross Edition, she would be between 5'6" (1,68 m) and 5'7" (1,70 m) tall. The information on said wanted poster may be inaccurate, however.
*Much like [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]], Evie and Jacob dipped an object in their target's blood following that person's death, though where Altaïr used a feather, the twins used a handkerchief.
