Monteriggioni is a town and commune of Tuscany, Italy. Built in the year 1213 by the overlords of Siena, Monteriggioni was actively involved in the defense of Tuscany against Florentine attempts to gain more territory.

At the front of this conflict was the Auditore family, who later became the town's rulers and protectors. They constructed Monteriggioni's famous walls, and the largest structure within them, the Villa Auditore.

Monteriggioni also served as the headquarters of the Italian branch of the Assassin Order from the early 14th century, when Domenico Auditore renovated the villa, to the year 1500, when the town was besieged by Cesare Borgia.

History
Domenico Auditore
In 1290, the Villa Auditore was constructed, though the identity of the one who built it is unknown. Thirty years later, in 1320, the exterior of the villa was damaged in a Florentine attack.

Some time after the death of Dante Alighieri in 1321, Domenico Auditore bought and renovated the villa using funds he had gained from Marco Polo. Subsequently, Domenico and his son used Monteriggioni as a base of operations in their silent war against the Templars.

During the villa's restoration, Domenico changed its exterior and added a painting gallery. He also hid the armor of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad in the Sanctuary underneath the villa, which could only be unlocked by Assassin Seals hidden in sarcophagi of famous historical Assassins.

In 1296, what would become the Auditore Family Crypt was built in the town. Domenico's memoirs, which told of how he had arrived in Florence and had taken the name "Auditore", would later be inscribed upon the crypt's walls.

Mario Auditore
At some point in the early or mid 14th century, the Shroud of Eden was brought to Monteriggioni by the Assassins. They falsified church records to claim that the artifact was merely a forgery, before hollowing out the well of the town and leaving the Piece of Eden in a lair of elaborate traps.

In 1454, Mario Auditore was made sole ruler of Monteriggioni when his brother Giovanni moved to Florence. The town came under frequent attack by Florence during this time, leading Mario to strengthen the town's economy and defenses in order to better withstand Florentine pressures.

Soon after, Mario discovered that a man named Luciano Pezzati was causing strife within the town, by turning families against each other. After he was captured and interrogated, Luciano revealed that Florence was planning a large attack on Monteriggioni. Mario rallied his forces and successfully repelled the Florentine forces led by Federico da Montefeltro.

After defending the town, Mario continued to interrogate Luciano, only to discover that the purpose of the Florentine attack was to acquire an ancient artifact hidden underneath the town. With the help of several architects and historians, Mario eventually discovered the Shroud in the hollowed-out well of the town, and had it removed from Monteriggioni by Giovanni.

Over the next twenty years, Monteriggioni gradually fell into disrepair as Mario devoted more of his time to war and the Brotherhood. By 1476, most of the town's shops had closed, the number of visitors to Monteriggioni had decreased, and the upkeep of the Villa Auditore had been neglected.

Ezio Auditore
On New Year's Eve 1476, Mario's nephew, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, took shelter in Monteriggioni, and later became the town's biggest investor and co-ruler with Mario. For over twenty-three years, Monteriggioni prospered as Ezio used the funds he had gathered during his adventures to reopen the town's shops, barracks, brothel and thieves' guild. The town's church, well, and mines were also reopened.

Significant improvements were also made to the town's infrastructure, and the Villa Auditore was gradually renovated. By December 1499, Monteriggioni had become a vital headquarters of the Assassins, whose flag flew over the town. Around this time, Mario also added cannons to the town's defenses.

On 2 January 1500, Cesare Borgia – Captain-General of the Papal Army – led a siege on Monteriggioni in order to recover the Apple of Eden that Ezio had taken from the Templars. Though the Assassins were able to temporarily hold off the attack while the citizens were evacuated, the town eventually fell; resulting in Mario being killed, and the buildings of Monteriggioni suffering significant damage.

Following this, the Assassins abandoned the town, relocating their headquarters to Rome. However, at some later point, an elderly Ezio returned to Monteriggioni and entered the Sanctuary underneath the Villa Auditore. There, Ezio left a clue for the password of the Colosseum Vault, which would eventually be found by his descendant, Desmond Miles.

Prior to 1554, the Auditore family regained control of Monteriggioni, though the town was betrayed in 1554 by Giovannino Zeti, the keeper of the garrison and a Florentine exile, who was allowed to return to Florence in exchange for the keys to the city. Though the town was soon conquered by the Medici family of Florence, the Auditore were allowed to continue their leadership over Monteriggioni, due to their good relations with the Medici.

Modern Monteriggioni
By the 21st century, the town remained largely unchanged from its Renaissance appearance, and had become a tourist attraction, with a plaque in front of the ruined Villa Auditore commemorating the siege of the town by the Borgia.

On 9 September 2012, a small team of modern-day Assassins, composed of Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, arrived in the town of Monteriggioni to seek refuge from the Templars of Abstergo Industries. They set up a temporary hideout in the Sanctuary beneath the Villa Auditore, where the cell signals that Abstergo was using to locate them could not reach.

The group remained there for the next month as Desmond used the Animus to determine the location of Ezio's Apple of Eden, venturing above ground only at night or when supplies were needed. Also, while Desmond explored Monteriggioni at night during his breaks from the Animus, he managed to recover some of his ancestors' possessions. After discovering the Apple's location, and the password to the door of the Colosseum Vault, the team left the town for Rome on 10 October 2012, 72 days from the launch of Abstergo's satellite.

As well as this, Abstergo used Monteriggioni as a simulated location in the first stage of training for the recruits in their Animi Training Program.

Renovations
Upon his arrival in Monteriggioni, Ezio was able to invest in the renovation of various buildings throughout the town, with the help of an architect hired by Mario. As the town was renovated, the appearance of the Villa also improved, and flags (marked first with Auditore crest, and then with the Assassin insignia) were also added to buildings.
Trivia
;Assassin's Creed II
*Throughout the town, Ezio could find eight statuettes of the Roman gods. Each pair of statuettes belonged to a pedestal, and each completed pedestal rewarded Ezio with 2,000 florins. Additionally, finding all of the statuettes granted the "Myth Maker" achievement.
*After restoring the mine, well, and church, hidden treasure chests could be found within each structure. The towers on the walls of Monteriggioni also contained treasures, however, these chests could only be reached after the barracks, brothel, and thieves' guild were renovated.
*The tunnel and traps that Mario Auditore crossed to reach the Shroud in 1454 were absent by the time Ezio arrived in Monteriggioni.
*Ezio would receive 10% revenue of each investment's price every twenty minutes. Furthermore, any renovations of the four shops allowed him to receive discounts of up to 15% on all of the items' original prices.
*The Auditore Family Crypt could be unlocked through Uplay.
*Once it was fully renovated, Monteriggioni had a total of 3,500 residents.
*Total renovation cost of the town was estimated at 91,000ƒ.
*The achievement "Podestà of Monteriggioni" could be gained by reaching 80% of the Villa Auditore's total value.

;Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the entrance to the Auditore Crypt was missing in Sequence 1. However, it appeared once more in modern-day Monteriggioni.
*When Ezio returned to Monteriggioni after the confrontation in the Vatican, none of the merchants could be interacted with.
*As of 1500, there were at least 500 residents of Monteriggioni, which could be seen in the beginning of Brotherhood during the attack of the Papal forces.
*Desmond could leave the Animus at any time and explore Monteriggioni, though only for ten minute intervals. However, for the first time before doing so, he had to equip a watch and an earpiece, in order to remain in contact with his team.
*In modern-day Monteriggioni, a red trail was visible while using Eagle Vision. The trail led from the back entrance of the Villa Auditore to the fountain bearing the Assassin insignia. After the completion of Sequence 6, the trail was no longer present. Darby McDevitt and Falko Poiker explained in an interview that the trail was intended to help players find their way back to the Sanctuary, though its red color was an oversight.
*By 2012, the shops Ezio had renovated had been replaced with different businesses. A tourist information booth stood where the art merchant had been, the tailor's shop had been replaced by a bakery and café, the doctor's shop had been converted into a tavern, and the blacksmith's shop had been converted into a hotel. Only the bank retained its original purpose.
*In the Italian version of Brotherhood, the plaque in front of the villa incorrectly stated the town was attacked by the forces of "Pope Alexander IV", as opposed to "Alexander VI".
*During Sequence 1, Ezio could enter Mario's study. While the Codex Wall was present, the Codex pages themselves would not glow with the markings forming the world map, when seen using the Eagle Vision.
*The faction flags seen on the towers near the faction buildings in Assassin's Creed 2 are not present in this game.
*The well is not renovated but Ezio's room has received the changes which will not be possible without all of Montriggioni's renovations.
Monteriggioni is a town and commune of Tuscany, Italy. Built in the year 1213 by the overlords of Siena, Monteriggioni was actively involved in the defense of Tuscany against Florentine attempts to gain more territory.

{{Dialogue|Desmond|I figured you'd like it nowadays. Seems not to have changed much.|Shaun|Exactly. History is the study of change. Change is life.

The Villa Auditore was a familial home and stronghold of the Auditore family, located within the city of Monteriggioni.

Purchased by the family sometime after 1321, it remained the home to the Auditore up until the turn of the 16th century, when it was heavily damaged during the siege of Monteriggioni.

History
Domenico Auditore
The villa was constructed in 1290. Thirty years later, in 1320, a Florentine attack left the facade damaged, and in need of reconstruction. After the death of Dante Alighieri in 1321, Domenico Auditore purchased the Villa, and subsequently erected a new facade, as well as a painting gallery within the building. He redesigned the Villa as both a home, fortress and a training ground for the town.

The building itself was filled with several hidden compartments and rooms, whilst the grounds catered to a number of different uses. Following this, Domenico constructed a family crypt, which would later be connected to an escape route within the Villa that led out to the north of Monteriggioni.

Mario Auditore
By 1436, the Villa hosted the newest generation of Auditore Assassins: the brothers Mario and Giovanni Auditore. Following the death of their father and Giovanni's departure for Florence, Mario became the sole ruler of Monteriggioni, and main resident of the Villa in 1454.

Despite Mario's love for the building, both Monteriggioni and the Villa receded into disrepair due to him focusing his spending on warfare and mercenaries, rather than its upkeep. Instead, the Villa was mostly used for the storage of weapons and war equipment, and at one point, even a mysterious artifact that Mario had discovered hidden under Monteriggioni. During the city's defense in 1454, the Villa was also where Mario and his mercenaries interrogated Luciano Pezzati, a spy for the invading Florentine army.

Ezio Auditore
In 1476, Mario's nephew, Ezio Auditore, as well as his mother and sister, came seeking refuge in Monteriggioni after the execution of his father Giovanni and brothers, Federico and Petruccio. After resting in the Villa, Ezio intended to take his mother and sister to Spain, much to Mario's protests.

Eventually, Ezio decided to remain in Monteriggioni and seek revenge on those responsible for the execution of his male kin. He became, in effect, co-ruler of Monteriggioni with Mario, and the renovations he funded and oversaw proved to herald a rebirth for the Villa and the city's overall state. Although the exact length of time it took for the Villa to be rebuilt is unknown, the Villa once again became an opulent structure and headquarters for the Italian Assassin Brotherhood by late December 1499.

However, on 2 January 1500, the Papal forces led by Cesare Borgia besieged Monteriggioni, devastating the town and its Villa, while also killing Mario in the process. After this, the Villa was abandoned, as Ezio left the ruins of Monteriggioni to wage war against the Borgia family in Rome.

Sometime before 1554, the Auditore resumed control over Monteriggioni, though the Villa was not rebuilt. In 1554, the Auditore were betrayed by Giovannino Zeti, keeper of the garrison and a Florentine exile, who gave the keys of the city to the Medici family. The Medici conquered Monteriggioni, though they allowed the Auditore to continue ruling the city due to their families' good relationship.

By 2012, the Villa had become a World Preservation Site, and was heralded as "one of the Tuscan countryside's most beloved landmarks." A plaque displayed before the Villa contained details of its construction, as well as how it had been destroyed in Pope Alexander VI's military campaign in 1500.
On 9 September 2012, Desmond Miles, Lucy Stillman, Rebecca Crane, and Shaun Hastings set up a temporary base of operations within the Sanctuary beneath the Villa to escape the Templars searching for them. Throughout their stay, which lasted until October 10, the Assassins lived within the Villa, and came out only to collect provisions.

Rooms
The Villa Auditore had several rooms, some of which were hidden.

Main hall
The main hall of the villa served as the entrance, and led to several other rooms, as well as the courtyard which contained the statuettes Ezio recovered from the city.

It was well-furnished, even in its state of disrepair, and was spacious and featured an elegant design. A large marble staircase occupied the center, leading to the second floor, while a chandelier hung from above. Several paintings purchased by Ezio decorated the walls of the main hall.

Armory
In the armory, Ezio was able to change his equipped weapons or armor within two separate rooms. The armor room contained the five sets of armor available to Ezio. The Armor of Altaïr, once unlocked from the Sanctuary, was situated at the back of the armory.

The center of the armory contained a model of the Flying Machine used during the assassination of Carlo Grimaldi in Venice, along with a model of the carriage Ezio drove in the Apennine Mountains with Leonardo da Vinci.

Weapons room
The weapons room contained Ezio's weapons, spread throughout several weapons racks. The left rack held the Schiavona, the common, the Captain's, and the Milanese swords. Meanwhile, the right rack possessed the Sword of Altaïr, the Old Syrian sword, the Scimitar, and the Venetian and Florentine falchions.

The other side had a rack which contained the Mercenario and the Condottiero warhammers, the Maul, and the Flanged and Cavalieri maces. The center of the room had a double sided rack that contained the small weapons, comprised of the Dagger, Knife, Stiletto, Channeled and Notched cinquedeas, and the Sultan's and Butcher's knives.

Workshop
The workshop was a room which contained several shelves lined with books, and a scale replica of Monteriggioni. Claudia Auditore occupied this room during Ezio's hunt for Rodrigo Borgia, keeping track of the city's finances and maintaining records of the Villa's refurbishment.

Monteriggioni's resident architect was also present here, through whom Ezio made decisions regarding upgrades to the villa. This was also the place where Leonardo da Vinci set up his workshop after being invited to stay at the Villa by Mario Auditore.

Mario's study
Mario Auditore's study was a room where Mario and Ezio would discuss the operations of the Assassin Order, including details of various missions Ezio would undertake. Before Ezio joined in the efforts of the Assassins though, the study had been the room in which his father, Giovanni, and Mario discussed plans for the order and missions.

The Codex Wall was located in the study, and the pages kept within it were added by Ezio once they were found throughout his journeys across Italy, after they had been decoded by Leonardo da Vinci. A few of the pages that had been on the wall were ones decoded by Giovanni. Standing before the Codex Wall was a pedestal meant for holding the Apple of Eden. The pedestal was placed in a way so that the light emitted from the artifact would mark locations on the map beneath the pages.

By 1499, Ezio had collected all of the Codex pages. From there, he used his Eagle Vision to orient the pieces into their proper positions. When the puzzle was solved, the wall revealed a complete map of the world marked with the locations of the Pieces of Eden and the different Vaults and Temples.

Beyond the Codex Wall was Mario's desk, where he did writing work and presumably kept track of the Brotherhood. As well as this, there was a large bookcase in the room, which concealed a mechanism that hid the stairs to a place known as the Sanctuary. Finally, above the study was a balcony, which would connect to a corridor that led to the entrances of the workshop, and Maria and Ezio's rooms.

Following the attack by Cesare Borgia, the room had been destroyed in part, but still held Claudia's record book, which was found centuries later by Desmond Miles.

Maria's room
Maria Auditore's room was the bedroom of Maria Auditore, located on the second floor of the villa. Like the rest of the villa, it was well furnished, and included a box for feathers that Ezio collected for her in memory of her youngest son and his brother, Petruccio.

Maria spent around 20 years praying in this room, constantly in mourning for the loss of Petruccio. However, when Ezio had finally collected one hundred feathers, persisting even after his uncle Mario had written off Maria's grief as a hopeless cause, she finally spoke, thanking her son for not giving up on her.

Ezio's room
Ezio Auditore's room was located at the top floor of the Villa Auditore. It served as a bedroom, study, and base of operations during his twenty-three year crusade to avenge his fallen father and two brothers, who were executed by members of the Templar Order. Paintings of Ezio's assassination targets would be hung in his room after he had killed them.

The room was supported by a wooden beam running up from the middle of the floor to the ceiling, and was taken up mostly by a desk littered with letters and documents. Ezio's room was slightly altered just before the siege of Monteriggioni, with the addition of a large bed and a bath tub, with a set of stairs leading up to it instead of a ladder. These were possibly added after Ezio had upgraded the Villa.

In 1500, Ezio spent the night with Caterina Sforza when the city was attacked in the siege. A cannonball crashed through the wall of his room and damaged the wooden support beam in the center of the structure, causing the ceiling to collapse and cave in over half of the room.

As a result, debris from the ceiling fell onto the Armor of Altaïr, prompting Ezio to leave it behind to engage in defending the Villa.

Painting gallery
Painting gallery

At some point during 1454, Mario utilized the painting gallery in the Villa, taking advantage of his brother's connections in Florence to import fine art.

From 1476 to 1499, Ezio gathered pieces of Renaissance artwork from art merchants in several different cities during his travels, which were displayed in the villa's painting gallery. However, the paintings were either destroyed or stolen by the Borgia following the siege of Monteriggioni in 1500.

Sanctuary
Sanctuary

The Sanctuary was a stone chamber located in Monteriggioni, and was used by Assassins in both the Renaissance and modern times. It was a well-built chamber found underneath the Villa Auditore, and could be accessed primarily through an entrance hidden behind a bookshelf in the Villa study.

Statues of seven legendary Assassins lined the walls. Six of these statues had corresponding seals at their base, which had to be collected and returned, in order to unlock the gate in front of the seventh statue of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. This seventh statue also held the Armor of Altaïr until it was recovered by Ezio Auditore.

Trivia
*The Villa Auditore bears a passing resemblance to the Villa di Maiano in its overall form, central portico, number of floors and tower. The Villa di Maiano is located just outside Florence.
*The Villa was featured on the banner of Shaun Hastings' coffee stand, during the infiltration of the Abstergo Entertainment offices in Montreal.

Modern times

Monteriggioni's resident architect was also present here, through whom Ezio made decisions regarding upgrades to the villa. This was also the place where Leonardo da Vinci set up his workshop after being invited to stay at the Villa by Mario Auditore.

*In Assassins creed 2 after solving Subject 16's puzzle the sign remains on the wall but where does it goes it Assassins creed:Brotherhood
