'''William of Montferrat''' (1136 - 1191) was secretly a member of the [[Templars|Templar Order]], and the fifth of [[Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad]]'s targets assigned by [[Rashid ad-Din Sinan|Al Mualim]].

William was a skilled soldier residing in the Rich District of [[Acre]], where he trained many of [[Richard I of England|King Richard]]'s men.

At some point during his life, William joined the secret organization known as the Knights Templar, plotting their rule over the Holy Land, and aiding his Templar brothers in guarding the [[Apple of Eden 2|Apple of Eden]]'s secrets.

As Altaïr arrived in Acre and began his [[investigation]] into William's life, he soon discovered that William was stealing food and money from the [[Civilians|citizens]]. The [[Assassins|Assassin]] also learned that the relation between King Richard and William had steadily been growing strained.

Altaïr later made his way to the front of the [[Acre Citadel|King's Citadel]], where he witnessed King Richard and William arguing. William expressed his fear that the King judged him too quickly, and did not trust him enough. Outraged by this, King Richard responded that he had left William as Acre's regent. William attempted to apologize, but Richard left in a fit of rage.

Angered in turn by the public reprimands he had received, William returned to the citadel, and took his temper out on his men. In a corner of the keep, William began insulting his men, intending to encourage them towards a better performance, and a stronger sense of duty. To bring across his point, he had two men punished for laziness and dereliction of duty.

Altaïr, who had followed William into the fortress, silently and skillfully eliminated the [[archers]] around the fortifications' perimeter. When William concluded his lecture, his men had left, and he began looking through his papers. Here, Altaïr leapt down and assassinated William with his [[Hidden Blade]].

With his dying words, William told Altaïr that he had not been stealing resources from the citizens, but was simply stockpiling them to be distributed fairly in times of hardship. Altaïr remarked that he knew William intended to give the city to his son {{Wiki|Conrad of Montferrat|Conrad}}, to which William responded that the city did not belong to anyone but its people.

Before Altaïr could ask any more questions, William perished, and the Assassin made his escape from the fortress.

==Characteristics and personality==
Although not a giant of a man, William of Montferrat was nevertheless set in the belief that might makes right, and he spent countless hours training and berating his men, to prepare them for the "coming war." Oddly enough, few of his soldiers had actually joined King Richard's march to the [[Arsuf|Arsuf Plains]], leading people to wonder what "war" he spoke about.

William constantly demanded perfection from his men, and was both quick to point out flaws and reluctant to give praise. He was often shouting, and rarely seemed happy. At the time before his assassination, he was expecting a visit from King Richard himself, and although the king had placed him in charge of Acre on his behalf, William was waiting for the meeting with a mixture of trepidation and annoyance.

Later, when two of his soldiers were caught whoring and drinking while on duty, he killed them as an example for the rest of his men.

*The choice of William as a target for Altaïr was probably inspired by the fact that, historically, his son Conrad was murdered by the Assassins in Tyre. In reality, William would have been an old man during the events of the game.
*A glitch could occur in ''[[Assassin's Creed]]'' if William pursued Altaïr to the upper walls of citadel. From there, it would be possible to climb on top of the battlements and push him off into the sea below. A message would then announce the failure of the mission, since the target had "escaped."
*Historically, William was actually the fifth named of Montferrat, and he was thus known as "William the Old" to differentiate him from his eldest son.

Garnier was the tenth Grand Master of the Knights Hospitalier, a monastic order founded after the First Crusade, who established its first infirmary near the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in [[Jerusalem]]. At first, the order cared for pilgrims, but soon made sure armed [[guards]] prevented the pilgrims from being harmed. This escorting force was built up dramatically, and became a dominant Christian group along with the Knights Templar.<ref name="Wikipedia">[[wikipedia:Garnier de Nablus|Garnier de Nablus on ''Wikipedia'']]</ref> Garnier began his service with the order in 1177, as a commander of the hospital in Jerusalem, and was promoted a decade later.<ref name="Wikipedia" />

Garnier was exiled from [[France]] for the cruel and inhumane treatment of his patients, who he saw less as people, and more as experiments on whom to try the latest cures.<ref name="AC">''[[Assassin's Creed]]''</ref> The price of knowledge was never too high for him, even if it had to be paid with another man's blood. Since Garnier's family had contributed a significant amount of money to [[Richard I of England|King Richard]]'s war efforts, he was harbored and protected in Acre.

In Acre, Garnier managed to buy himself loyal assistants, who allowed him to continue his cruel work. He fluctuated between being very articulate and composed, and being a deranged madman; although he did firmly believe that he was helping those he tended to in the [[Hospitalier Fortress]] in Acre.<ref name="AC" /> At some point, Garnier joined the Templar Order and learned their ways and secrets just like his fellow members. What he learned included the Templar's views and even information on the mysterious artifact, the [[Pieces of Eden|Piece of Eden]].

Following the siege of Acre, Garnier was granted jurisdiction of the Poor District in Acre. There, he set up his base of operation at the Hospitalier hospital, and continued his brutal experiments. News of his horrible work spread throughout the city, causing [[civilians]] to fear and avoid the hospital.<ref name="AC" />

When Altaïr infiltrated the Hospitalier Fortress with the intention of assassinating Garnier, a terrified patient attempted to escape, only to be captured by Garnier's guards. When Garnier revealed himself, he attempted to calm the patient with kind words. However, the patient had an outburst, claiming that Garnier's true intentions were evil. After the doctor admonished him, he commanded the guards to break the patient's legs, knowing this would prevent another escape attempt.<ref name="AC" />

When Garnier dismissed the horrified crowd and returned to his work, the Assassin stealthily made his way inside the hospital, and located the doctor. Altaïr then took the doctor's life with his [[Hidden Blade|blade]]. With his final words, Garnier claimed that he was actually helping his patients. Although Altaïr tried to rebuke all of his claims, Garnier persisted in his beliefs.

Garnier claimed that the people he took were among the poorest and most ill of the surrounding cities, and that many had recovered and were grateful for his generous help. He said his methods were necessary to free people from the "''prisons of their own minds.''" Altaïr asked if he truly believed that he was helping them, and Garnier simply replied, "''It's not what I believe, it's what I know.''" Before he could say any more, however, Garnier died, and Altaïr was left to escape the area, and report his success to the [[Assassins' Bureau|bureau]].<ref name="AC" />

==Personality and characteristics==
Garnier genuinely believed that he was helping the people that he held in his hospital, committing cruel and injustice acts to his patients, turning them into his slaves, and making them his guards. Even though he claimed to be a man of science, he completely lacked a sense of ethics and morality. He did not seem to fear death and even while he was communicating with Altaïr, he attempted to justify his actions, explaining why he dragged them from their supposed "homes" such as [[brothels]] or sewers.<ref name="AC" />

He often wore a black robes with an apron which was stained from the blood of the patients who had been involved in his experiments. He had a small leather belt around his waist which held up a small pouch with unknown contents and he usually carried his sword around with him for protection. He was of average height and weight. Signs of growing older, such as wrinkles and balding, were visible as well.<ref name="AC" />
