Nothing is true, everything is permited.

The Creed was the code and guiding philosophy of the Assassin's Order. Al Mualim , former Grand Master of the Assassins, once stated that these are rules, "we are nothing if we do not abide by the Assassin's Creed." It restricts unnecessary slaughter of innocents, preserves the reputation of one's self and the order, and is meant to create peace not only within the world, but within the individual. The Assassins have been handing the Creed down aurally from generation to generation, ensuring the message the Creed brings is delivered to every member of the Assassin's Order.

The Three Tenets of the Creed
The Creed is an unwritten set of rules aurally passed down from generation to generation among the brotherhood of the Assassin Order and known by every member. It mainly emphasises three simple moral tenets that focused on a successful mission, mastery of self-emotions, and ensured the safety of the brotherhood.

Stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent
That man had no need to die!
The goal of the assassins is to ensure peace in all things. The Assassins believe that political assassinations and the death of the corrupt will bring peace and a true sense of security to the common people. Slaying innocents and civilian bystanders who do not need to die goes a long way towards spreading strife and discord in addition to ruining the name of the Assassin Order itself.

Always be discrete
Be unseen. The Assassins aim is to get close to their target stealthily, usually in public, to perform awe-inspiring assassinations. The greatest illusion from an assassination is, an Assassin seemingly materializes from nowhere, kills a corrupt public figure, and vanishes into the depth of the crowd or environment. If an Assassin is spotted stalking their target, the supernatural effect is diluted, simply making it more difficult for the Assassin to reach his target.

Never compromise the Brotherhood
The actions of one must never bring harm to all. If an Assassin fails, is captured, or is being chased, he must never commit an action or say anything that can be tied back to the Brotherhood or Masyaf. For example, in the original Assassins Creed, in the beginning, Altair openly exposes himself to Robert de Sable and the other Templars and summarily fails to assassinate him. This failure compromised the brotherhood, which in turn cost the Assassin Malik his left arm, and his brother Kadar and led Robert de Sable to gather the other Templars and lay siege to Masyaf.

Penalty for Disobedience
When Altaïr breaks all three tenets during an extremely important mission at Solomon's Temple, he is stripped of all his weapons and equipment, demoted to Novice rank and must earn his way back into the brotherhood. By murdering an innocent (an old man who he thought could have alerted the guards), revealing himself to Robert de Sable, and leading the Templars back to the - until then, secret - location of Masyaf, he jeopardizes not only his own safety, but the livelihood of the entire brotherhood. Al Mualim considers executing him for treason, based upon the severity of these crimes, but decides to spare him in order to avoid wasting Altair's talents.

Assassin's Creed
As Desmond relives Altaïr's memories, he must follow these tenets as well to stay synchronized with his ancestor's memories in the Animus. Breaking the first tenet - never kill an innocent person - by killing anyone other than a guard or an assassination target, will cause him to lose one-third or less synchronization. While there is no punishment for breaking the second tenet - hide in plain sight - following it will allow Altair to assassinate targets more easily; targets like Abu'l Nuqoud, who will run when Altair is exposed by the guards. As for the third tenet - never compromise the Brotherhood - Altair will not be able to enter an Assassins' Bureau when under pursuit, as this would compromise the brotherhood.

Altair unknowingly breaks this third tenet after dispatching eight of the higher ranked Templar members. Upon deducing his mission, Robert de Sable hoped to trick Altair into inadvertently allying the opposing Crusader forces; since the targets were from both Saracen and Crusader origins, their respective leaders, Saladin and Richard the Lionhearted, would have been more willing to join together in order to combat a considerable new threat: the Assassins. Robert attempted to convince Richard to join forces with Saladin and attacking Masyaf. During the attack, he planned to recover the Piece of Eden lost to Al Mualim at the Temple of Solomon. However, Altair's subduing of Robert in front of Richard convinced Richard not to attack the Assassins, and Altair went unpunished for this transgression.

Assassin's Creed II
When Ezio kills Vieri de' Pazzi, he shows disrespect to his corpse, cursing him and calling for his everlasting suffering. Seeing this as a violation of the creed, his Uncle Mario intervenes, chastising the young assassin for his vengefulness; vengeance goes against word of the creed, and prevents either victim or assassin from finding the peace that all assassinations through the order wish to affect.

Throughout the game Ezio follows his uncle's example, showing respect for the dead by closing their eyes and saying "Requiescat in Pace"(Rest in peace). In the ancient Codex, Altair states that you can not kill a creed, even if you kill all of it's followers.

Trivia
*Interestingly, the player can slaughter Masyaf guards with no special repercussions. These assassin guards have the same abilities as Saracen or Crusader guards despite the typical Assassin training being far more specialized in close combat than regular military training.
*After completing the main storyline of Assassin's Creed, the player can kill civilians without losing sync with their ancestor.
The blade's hilt is shaped like an eagle's wings, while the blade itself is both long and agile, making it a light and deadly weapon. The sword is apparently the weapon of choice for the guards at Masyaf and available as a weapon in Assassin's Creed II.

Availability
Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles
Altaïr was equipped with his sword even before the events of Assassin's Creed, using it to wipe out platoons of Templars.

Assassin's Creed
Altaïr starts the game with his sword, which he is very skilled with until Al Mualim demotes him to Novice for breaking all three tenets of The Creed and decreases his skill greatly. During his progression back to his former rank, Master Assassin, Altaïr eventually regains his mastery with the sword.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
Altaïr still possesses his sword during the events after Assassin's Creed Bloodlines. In fact, the sword(s) can be found hung in Kantara Castle Great Hall ('The Bull' stage), as ornaments.

Assassin's Creed II
Altaïr's sword is available when the Monteriggioni blacksmith is renovated for 40,500 florins after DNA Sequence 8. The sword is the most powerful melee weapon in the game, as all three stats are maxed out.

Trivia
*It is unknown why the sword is available from the Monteriggioni blacksmith since the sword (being Altaïr's personal weapon) should be more likely available once his armor was unlocked, however, a possible cause is that the sword could have been lost along with the Codex, found, and later sold off to the blacksmith.

*The sword in the game is shorter compared to the other longswords Ezio can use; the entire sword being only a little longer than the length of his arm. However, Altaïr's sword is the strongest weapon available.

*Strangely, the Sword of Altaïr is considered the best sword in the second game since in Assassin's Creed, the Syrian sword was the best sword; however, it is not impossible that Altaïr modified the sword using the apple. This is also made further plausible as Altair uses this weapon in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines as opposed to the Syrian Sword. Another explanation is that Altaïr strengthened the blade with the Apple, like how he made his armor tougher.

*It is interesting to note that in later memory sequences of Assassin's Creed II, if the player has the sword equipped, it is quite possible to be knocked away from Ezio by Brute guards.

*There is a glitch in the Xbox 360 and PS3 version which automatically replaces this sword with the 'Common Sword' in Ezio's inventory. To fix this, you'll have to go to the weapon room in the Villa Auditore and equip the 'Sword of Altaïr' again.

After becoming Master of the Order, Altaïr used the knowledge from within the Apple to construct a lightweight, yet unbreakable set of armor.

History
Unlike the robes Altaïr wore during the events of Assassin's Creed, this armor provides more protection against attacks and is dyed black/red. Due to its advanced design, it is more similar to the armor Giovanni and Ezio wear than Altaïr's original armor. The armor is seen in Assassin's Creed II.

Assassin's Creed II
Years later, Altaïr's armor was stored inside a vault below the Auditore Villa, locked behind bars which only open when all six seals from hidden Assassins' tombs are collected and placed on their respective statues. As each seal is placed, a bar (to which the placed seal corresponds) retracts into the wall. When all six seals are placed, the bars that block access to the Altaïr's armor retracts into the floor, granting access to the armor. Altaïr's armor is the most powerful armor in Assassin's Creed II. Since it cannot break, it doesn't need to be repaired, which saves the user a great deal of florins. Unfortunately, the armor cannot be dyed visibly when worn. In Altaïr's Codex Pages, he claims to have created a new metal which is incredibly strong whilst being light as a feather. In a contrast to other Asassin's robes, Altaïr's Armor is black, while Ezio and Altaïr originally wore white. The black color scheme can be attributed to the rank of Grandmaster of the Syrian Assassin's Sect, which Altaïr obtained after defeating Al Mualim. Once you've obtained it, it can be taken on and off in the Auditore Family Villa in the armor room. Altaïr's armor must be worn all at once, you can't mix it with other armor sets/types. It's important to note that while the armor is unbreakable, it is not a full body suit, which explains how Ezio can be damaged while wearing it.

Trivia
*According to a piece of concept art, it seems that the armor was intended to be an invention by Leonardo da Vinci before being a creation of Altaïr.
*While wearing the armor the hood is never down during cut-scenes where it would normally be down if wearing Giovanni's assassin robes.
*The cloak for Altaïr's Armor, in addition to being black, is much longer than the one Ezio would wear with the other armors, and made up of three layers. Each layer is longer than the one above it, and the longest, lower layer is segmented, which gives the whole piece a look resembling Eagle's Wings. The back of the lower layer is also split down the middle, making it behave much like Altaïr's cloak from the original game, where each side would move up and down as the back of Altaïr's legs pushed against them.
*It is interesting to note that the Chest Guard of Altaïr and Pauldrons of Altaïr somewhat resemble Roman Lorica segmentata. Also, the cape-pauldron seems to be composed of leather. Plus, the Vambraces of Altaïr resemble golden Missaglias and Guard Captains wear similar vambraces. The Greaves of Altaïr also bear a strong resemblance to leather.
*The Robes that come with the armor look like a cross between Al Mualim's, Altaïr's and Giovanni's robes.
*Altaïr's armor, unlike other armors in the game, can only be worn as a full set.
*Despite having been created by Altaïr probably in the 13th century, the armour set corresponds with 15th century Italian fashion. This could be attributed to the armored parts of the outfit being created in the 13th century while the cloth sections where added at a later time period, closer to the 15th century.
*It is also interesting to note that while Altaïr's armour is the strongest armour in the game the Missaglias Vambraces give the player one extra health point whereas Altaïr's armour does not.

The iconic weapon of the Assassin's Creed series, Hidden Blades are used both for regular combat and for stealth Assassinations.

Assassin's Creed
Although Altaïr already has this weapon at the start of the game, he loses it when he is demoted to Novice. At his first promotion to rank 2, however, he earns it back (along with his Longsword) so that he may perform his first assassination on Tamir the Merchant in Damascus.

Basic usage
This weapon is mostly used for stealthy, low profile assassinations upon soldiers. An unaware soldier may be assassinated without drawing too much attention. When stealth is not a priority, Altaïr may perform a high profile assassination. This involves jabbing the blade through the target's nose and into the brain when face to face with you, or pushing the target onto his knees and stabbing him in the neck when approached from behind.

thumb|300px|right|Video tutorial on usage of the Hidden BladeThe Hidden Blade is the only weapon that Altaïr may wield while running or sprinting, jumping upon an opponent and causing him to fall on the ground. Then the blade is triggered, stabbing the victim in the throat. This feature makes it an ideal choice for running down targets who flee such as Talal the Slave Trader in Jerusalem.

Both low and high profile assassinations may fail. A guard wary of your actions may catch your arm when you attempt the kill and throw you back. Attacks from behind though will NEVER fail, nor will attacks made on guards who have been thrown to the ground. Be aware, of course, that you will lose one third of your synchronization if you assassinate innocent civilians with the Hidden Blade, just as with any other weapon.

Air to Assassinate
In a 2007 demo of the William of Montferrat mission, Jade Raymond introduced a move called air to assassinate that combines some of Altaïr's acrobatic skills with his Hidden Blade. From higher ground above a target such as a nearby roof or beam, Altaïr leaps directly onto his victim and stabs him in the throat. Although the move was not covered in the manual or in-game tutorials, air to assassinate does exist within Assassin's Creed and the controls were documented by stabguy on The Hidden Blade website. All forms of air to assassinate draw attention of nearby guards, even when performed in low profile. Note that in Assassin's Creed II air to assassinate was renamed Air Assassination and included as a required tutorial with simplified controls.

In combat
The Hidden Blade can also be used while in combat. An enemy who has been grabbed and thrown (or counter thrown with a grab break) can easily be killed while he lies on the ground.

Using the Hidden Blade in combat against large groups is challenging, as Altaïr cannot block any attack. The time frame in which Altaïr can counter-attack is extremely small compared to the longsword and the short blade, but successfully countering enables one of several different - and always lethal - counter-attacks in which Altaïr stabs his opponent in the chest, head, abdomen, base of the skull, or spine. It is also possible to assassinate the enemy in combat, while he is caught in a moment of inattention or grappling with a vigilante, but any other time it will fail because the enemy will always block the attack. It is also possible to assassinate your targets even if they are aware of you by getting behind them and assassinating them.

Mechanism
When not in use, the blade is hidden in a gauntlet on Altaïr's lower left arm. A ring on his little finger serves as the trigger for the gear system to eject the blade. As the system is not powerful enough to penetrate enemies, Altaïr extends the blade fully and then stabs it into his foe.

When the blade is open, it rests between Altaïr's middle and little fingers, in the space left by his amputated ring finger. This amputation is part of the initiation into the Hashshashin sect, which the Assassins are based on. When he is ready to put up the blade, he flicks his wrist down and the blade returns to the gauntlet.

Role in investigations and missions
Assassination missions
The Hidden Blade is also used for some of the investigations given to you by informants. You are asked to stealthily assassinate a number of targets. If any guard even once confronts you, the mission is failed. If you attack the targets or the guards with fists, the short blade, the longsword, or any other high profile weapon, you will fail the mission. Because of this, you may ONLY use throwing knives or the Hidden Blade to assassinate your targets.

Interrogation missions
During Interrogation missions, after successfully interrogating the target, Altaïr is forced to kill them, so they cannot reveal his plans to the enemy. He will bury the blade in their stomach to kill them, then gently lower their body onto the ground so as not to draw further attention to himself. Occasionally, other assassinations performed with the Hidden Blade play out in the same manner.

Save Citizen missions
In the optional Save Citizen missions to save citizens from soldiers threatening to kill them, this weapon will come in handy. Successfully and stealthily used, you might take out three of the soldiers before they notice you, draw their weapons, and engage you in a swordfight. If they notice your tactic, however, you'd best be prepared and draw either your short blade or sword for a swordfight.

Assassinations
The hidden blade is used in every storyline assassination you perform. Even if you begin by attacking the enemy with a sword, you will always finish them off with the hidden blade before it cuts to the death cutscene.

Assassin's Creed II
In Assassin's Creed II, Ezio possesses two of these blades, whereas Altaïr has only one. In addition, unlike Altaïr, who had to sacrifice his ring finger, both Ezio's ring fingers are intact, due to a modification that raises the base of the weapon itself. It is worth noting that the modification was not made by Leonardo da Vinci as when Giovanni is using the blade in Assassin's Creed: Lineage he has all his fingers intact but was instead a modification made by Altaïr to help the Assassins go underground as the absent ring finger distinguished Assassins from civilians.

Ezio's first blade is the one inherited from his father. The blade is initially broken since the last fight of Giovanni against Borgia's men (see Assassin's Creed: Lineage), but Ezio brings it to his friend Leonardo da Vinci to repair it.

At the end of the game, Desmond receives one from Lucy, a similar (if not the same) model of the Hidden Blade used by Ezio to face the attacking Abstergo's men. However, unlike Ezio's, the Hidden Blade has no upgrades or is just not usable.

In combat
In Assassin's Creed II, the use of the hidden blade in combat is more "classical": it can be used like a regular weapon, and is capable of breaking an enemy's defences instead of just trying to assassinate him. It attacks fairly fast, becoming faster after the acquirement of the second blade, allowing Ezio to unleash a constant barrage of strikes, suppressing a foe's ability to attack or killing them before they can attack. It is also possible to block attacks while using the Hidden Blade unlike the first game (not with the Blade itself though, but with the upgraded vambraces).

Veterans of Assassin's Creed combat may want to challenge themselves by using the Hidden Blade(s) in combat. While the counter-kill timing window is very short (fraction of a second), skillful timing will be rewarded nicely; except for against the Brutes' smashes which knock Ezio's weapon away (which does not work against Hidden Blades) and Seekers' (sweep Ezio's feet) special attacks, a successfully timed counter will always kill the guard against which it is performed, even if the guard has high health and/or is a high-ranking soldier.

Upgrades
The second Hidden Blade is acquired later and the main blade gets upgraded with the Poison Blade and the Pistol installed.

Techniques
Later on, Ezio can assassinate enemies below with an Air Assassination, a Double Air Assassination if the target is adjacent to another, by leaping from a platform onto the victim. This, however, is easily noticeable by Guards and they will attack once they see you doing it. It is possible to assasinate two guards at the same time (at ground level) by standing between them and piercing both their throats.

At the same time Ezio learns the aforementioned techniques, he can also assassinate enemies above certain ledges while he's climbing them and is now also able to assassinate them when he is in a hiding spot (e.g. Hay, Wells and Benches).

Ezio can also perform special kill animations with the dual hidden blades.

Trivia
*On one of the Codex Pages it states that the blade has to be connected or linked with the user, thus explaining part of why Altaïr had his ring finger removed. Altaïr opens his hand and spreads his fingers whenever the blade is extended. Similarly, he never uses the blade with his hand clenched in a fist; all stabbing moves and assassinations are performed with an open hand. The only time the blade sits in the space left by the amputated finger is when the player extends the blade and holds it out (by holding the weapon hand button while out of combat). Holding the button will keep the blade extended, and will act as any unsheathed weapon, scaring away civilians.
*Ironically in both games the trigger mechanism is not visible on Altair's or Ezio's hands, even when they aren't wearing gloves.
*Masyaf Guards in Assassin's Creed do sport a hidden blade, though they never use it, nor is their ring finger missing.
*Malik, from the first game, had the hidden blade before he lost his arm but did not have an amputated finger.
*The first recorded usage of the Hidden Blade by an Assassin was Darius, when he assassinated Xerxes. Moreover, his seal's symbol is the Hidden Blade. However, his ring finger is still intact.
*Patrice Desilets, the creative director of the game, stated that the addition of a second blade in Assassin's Creed II also had a lucid reason: it's Assassin's Creed II, so there are 2 blades.
*In the film Smokin' Aces, one of the assassins sport a weapon similar to the hidden blade. Also, in the movie G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra, Storm Shadow uses a weapon similar to the Hidden Blade, though it is limited by the fact it must be operated with both hands.ACAC
He is presented the Assassin's Boots by Al Mualim, allowing him to perform Dodges. In addition, they enable him to regain his balance when thrown in combat, meaning that he will not fall onto his face, instead rolling and immediately standing up. If you kill Abu'l, you can get the Level 2 blade.
After Altaïr's eighth assassination, be it that of Sibrand or Jubair al Hakim, he is promoted. Altaïr is once more at the top of the Assassins' Order, rank ten. His Longsword is upgraded again, to a very ornate gold-hilted sword that is more powerful than the previous ones. While this sword is not his personal one, the shape of the blade and color of the hilt indicate high status. It is believed that after the events of Assassin's Creed, he returns to using the Rank Nine blade: the Sword Of Altaïr. In addition, he receives a second Knife Belt, increasing his capacity of Throwing Knives to 15.

Maria Thorpe was an English woman who impersonated one of Altaïr's assassination targets – Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Robert de Sable – during the Third Crusade. Not being in favor with De Sable's successor, Maria was abandoned by the Knights Templar, and forced to find asylum with her enemies, the Assassins.

Following her and Altaïr's travels in Cyprus, the two settled down together and Maria bore him at least two sons; one of which would be a direct ancestor of the Assassins Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Desmond Miles and the mysterious Subject 16.

Biography
Early Life
As a child, Maria chose not to follow the norm for women of her age, instead choosing to act and dress as a male would; because of this, she was often pestered as a child and punished by her parents. A few years before the start of the Third Crusade, Maria was forced by her parents to marry, although it lasted less than a year. This disgrace, combined with Maria's own dreams of honor and glory, convinced her to leave England behind, and join the Crusaders in the Holy Land. Disguising herself as a man to prevent being prevented from partaking in the holy quest, Maria showed much promise amongst the Crusaders; attracting the attention of Robert De Sable's who, despite eventually learning her true gender, supported her. Robert granted Maria the position of his personal steward, and although she did not share her Master's beliefs, Maria was still willing enough to do anything for him, including dying if she had to.

Impersonation
I sense you expected someone else
Following the deaths of eight of the Nine in 1191, at the hands of the assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Robert correctly reasoned that he was next on the Assassin's list. Not one to be defeated, Robert publicly announced his intention to attend the funeral of the late Regent of Jerusalem, Majd Addin, as a show of mutual cooperation and respect between Muslim and Crusader. Privately, the Templar Grand Master knew this would be a chance too great for the assassin to pass up.

Maria was left to take Robert's place at the funeral, a decoy for Altaïr. As expected, the assassin appeared, and a great number of Templars attacked him. Overwhelming her Templar soldiers, Altaïr overpowered and knocked down Maria, who he thought to be Robert, and was greatly shocked to see such was not the case. Boastfully, Maria revealed to the assassin her reason for being there, and Robert's plot to unite both Crusader and Saracen against the Assassins. Prepared to die now for the duplicity, Maria was confused when she was left alive, but fled the city nonetheless .

In Cyprus
A month after Altaïr defeated Al Mualim, Maria's Templar rank dropped considerably and was disallowed travel to Cyprus with the Templars. She confronted Altaïr after the assault on the Acre harbor where the two of them engaged in another sword fight. Altaïr bested the woman and, after interrogating her about the Templars' plans for Cyprus, once more decided to spare her life. Afterwards, Altaïr took Maria prisoner and brought her with him on the journey to Cyprus, hoping to use her as leverage to flush other Templars out into the open.

The two of them travelled with Maria disguised as a slave to Limassol, where they met up with the assassin contact, Alexander. Maria was escorted to and kept at the resistance safe house, but escaped following an ambush by Templars, during which the building was set on fire. Maria hurried to warn The Grand Master of the Templars, Armand Bouchart of Altaïr's presence in Limassol, but Bouchart, suspicious of Maria's two "miraculous" escapes from the assassins, and equally distrustful of women, sentenced her to be locked away in prison. Maria was led away by two Templar guards and saved, luckily, if much to her chagrin, by Altaïr. After his recovery of her, she vowed to kill him, but Altaïr reasoned with her, noting that the best way to buy back into the Templar's favor was not by his head, but by her recovery of the Apple of Eden.

Altaïr took Maria along with him on the ship to Kyrenia. Whilst on the ship, Altaïr spoke to her about the philosophy of Empedocles - that "only a mind free of impediments is capable of grasping the chaotic beauty of the world." Although, Maria resisted his ideology, anchored as it was in the fundamental ideology of the assassins, she did take interest in it, asking curiously as to whether being able to see this "chaotic beauty" was truly something to be celebrated. In turn, Altaïr admitted to hardship imposed upon human beings as a result of freedom; but, he maintained that "the order and peace the Templar seek requires servility and imprisonment," a statement with which the captive Maria took some irony.

As the two prepared to disembark, Altaïr cut the rope binding Maria's wrists so that she might climb the ladder to the upper deck; at the same time, the two were recognized by the pirates who had ferried them there. Maria, hands free, used the opportunity to kick Altaïr down the ladder to face their attackers so that she might escape. However, she too was attacked by other members of the large crew, and was helped to safety by Markos. Because of his honesty and their common dislike of templars, Altaïr entrusted him with Maria's care, and asked him to look after her. Altaïr learned during his investigations that "the bull" - his target - had posted large bounties, not only for him, but for Maria as well. Fearing for her safety, he rushed to the harbor, where he found she and Markos being attacked by Templars. After rescuing them, Altaïr brought them to the Kyrenia safehouse.

Maria, her wrists once again bound, mocked Altaïr's crude plan for killing "the bull" - whom she knew as Moloch - and inadvertently ended up giving away his position in Kantara Castle. By the time Altaïr returned from killing him, Maria had already been taken away by Templar agents, who raided the safe house in his absence. Maria was given by Moloch to his son Shalim, and separated from the resistance members, and from Altaïr's attempts to rescue her.

Maria escaped from Shalim, and headed to Saint Hilarion Castle disguised as a consort to sneak in via palanquin. On her arrival, she confronted Shahar in his private room and demanded to know about the Templars' plan for the Apple of Eden; Shahar states that the Templars will achieve order at any means necessary, even if that "order" becomes synonymous with enslavement. Shahar grabbed her by her wrists, as if to subdue her, but was interrupted as Altaïr burst in upon them, looking for Shalim. Maria killed his two pursuers as if by impulse, but refused to fight beside or ally herself with him, and fled.

How Maria traveled from Kyrenia back to Limassol is unknown. Altaïr traveled back alone, and carried on without her for a short time. But, following his use of the Apple of Eden to quiet the rioting townspeople, it was Maria who killed the Mysterious Templar Warrior, who was intent to steal it back, by stabbing him through the back. Although she remained adamantly distrusting of the righteousness of his motives, she then led him to safety and, most importantly, to Templar Archives hidden under Limassol Castle.

As the Templar Archive swarmed around them, Maria engaged Armand Bouchart in combat. But Bouchart was an extremely skilled fighter, and hurled Maria into a wall, knocking her unconscious. After Altaïr defeated Bouchart, the two of them managed to flee the archives. She then told him that she no longer wanted to be part of the Templars or wish to return to England, but decided to go somewhere in the East. In Altaïr's last journal entry, it is revealed that he decided to travel with her.

Later life
Whoa... Alright, wasn't expecting that...
Maria was involved with Altaïr after the events of Cyprus and justifies how Altaïr's line of descent supposedly assimilate from the Fertile Crescent to Europe. Sometime in her life Maria led Altaïr to chase after her where the two of them meet atop a high tower in Acre. She removed her hood to reveal her identity, and suggestively beckoned him to come. Altaïr complied as the two kissed and eventually made love. The encounter resulted with the conception of a son as well as the child being Desmond's next ancestor. In the codex pages, Altaïr reveals that he and Maria had at least two sons, one at some point in his life, attempted to assassinate Genghis Khan.

Characteristics and personality
At an early age, Maria was a bit of a dreamer, thinking about leaving England to find honor and glory in the Holy Land. During the time, she showed characteristics of stubbornness, refusing to become a lady as her wanderlust only became stronger to leave her homeland.

She is a very determined person with a great passion to accomplish more within the Templar ranks. During their first encounter, Maria presented a straightforward, merciless style of command when confronted with Altaïr. In her "final words", she acted out as arrogant and overconfident regarding Robert's cause.

After the events of Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, her harsh and stubborn attitude around Altaïr became open and civil, presumably sided with him and the Assassins afterwards.

In Assassin's Creed II, she presents a provocative side when she led Altaïr up the viewpoint tower where she beckoned him to kiss and eventually make love with her. clear

Equipment and skills
Maria is highly trained in swordsmanship as she was able to counter and avoid Altaïr's attacks when confronted against him.

In the second game, she demonstrated limited free running skills during Desmond's bleeding effect dream.
(Altaïr rips off the helm, only to see Maria's face).

Maria: I sense you expected someone else.

Altaïr: What sorcery is this?!

Maria: No sorcery, we knew you'd come. Robert needed to be sure he'd have time to get away.

Altaïr: So he flees!?

Maria: We cannot deny your success. You have laid waste to our plans: first, the treasure, then our men. Control of the Holy Land slipped away, but then he saw an opportunity, to reclaim what has been stolen, to turn your victories to our advantage!

Altaïr: Al Mualim still holds your treasure, and we've routed your army before! Whatever Robert plans, he'll fail again!

Maria: Ah, but it's not just Templars you'll contend with now!

Altaïr: Speak sense!

Maria: Robert rides for Arsuf to plead his case, that Saracen and Crusader unite... against the Assassins!

Altaïr: That will never happen! They have no reason to!

Maria: Had, perhaps. But now you've given them one: nine, in fact. The bodies you've left behind, victims on both sides. You've made the Assassins an enemy in common and ensured the annihilation of your entire order! Well done!

Altaïr: Not nine, eight.

Maria: (confused) What do you mean?

Altaïr: You are not my target. I will not take your life. You're free to go, but do not follow me!

Maria: I don't need to. You're already too late!

Altaïr: We'll see.
Trivia
* Her name is a Latin derivative of Mary. The origin name Mary is a reference in the Latin phrase "stella maris" meaning "star of the sea" or from the prefix Mar meaning "bitter". Other possible meanings are derived from Miryam meaning "wished for child, rebellious, or sea of bitterness." in Hebrew or Merry meaning "cherished or beloved" in Egyptian.
** Her surname means "village" in Old Norse and is the name of various English villages.
*If players connect the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed II with the PSP game Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, the weapons of the defeated bosses in Bloodlines will appear at the Auditore Family Villa. Maria's weapon is labelled as "Maria Thorpe's Longsword." This is the first mention of her surname.
*Maria is around her early 30s during Assassin's Creed, making her around five years older than Altaïr.
*Not only was Maria the first known female Templar to have appeared in the series, but the first Templar to be spared and assimilate main factions (from Templars to Assassins).
