The Crusaders were a coalition army of numerous monastic and military Christian knights, that declared war and set out on a Crusade to the Holy Land, aiming to forcefully reclaim it from the Muslim Saracens in the name of Christianity. They consisted of several knightly orders such as the Knights Hospitalier, Knights Teutonic, and Knights Templar.

History
In the late 12th century, the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnemnos sent an ambassador to Pope Urban II, asking for help against the Seljuq dynasty, with the Crusaders being formed in 1095, as a response to the Seljuk threat. Pope Urban II called upon all Christians in a war against the Turks, promising them material rewards and remission of their sins.

This sparked off a series of Crusades, of which only the first was successful for the Christians.

Third Crusade
Third Crusade
By the year 1191, the Crusaders were commanded by Richard the Lionheart, who led them to several victories during the Third Crusade. The Crusaders won battles at Acre, Arsuf, and Jaffa, yet they failed to capture Jerusalem. Later, King Richard made peace with the Saracens and agreed to stop attacking Jerusalem if Saladin, the Saracen leader, allowed Christian pilgrims to visit freely.

The Knights Templar, who were a part of the Crusader army, besieged the Assassin fortress at Masyaf twice during the Third Crusade, although both attempts ended in failure.

The first, in the year 1189, was led by the Templar Haras, who was a part of the Assassin Order until he betrayed them, hoping to locate the Apple of Eden. The second, in 1191, was led by the Templar Grand Master himself, Robert de Sable. In all, both sieges were quelled due to the efforts of the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

By the year 1191, the Crusaders had conquered the cities of Jaffa and Acre, and were on the march towards Jerusalem. During this time, Crusader troops could be found patrolling through the wilderness that divided the cities of Acre, Damascus and Jerusalem.

The same year, Altaïr set out to eliminate several corrupt men, who were secretly Templars. Several of these men were important Crusaders and Saracens, which almost led to the two factions uniting in an attempt to try and destroy their common enemy. In order to prevent this, Altaïr set out to assassinate the Templar Grand Master, Robert de Sable, and succeeded in killing him after a long duel, during the Battle of Arsuf, to convince Richard that the Templars were traitors to his army.

Knightly orders
Knights Templar
Templars
Throughout history, the Templars had existed in one form or another, and during the Crusades, they felt the need for support from the Catholic Church. With this, they turned into a monastic-military organisation, with the stated objective of protecting pilgrims in the Holy Land.

However, their actual objective was to look for the Pieces of Eden, one of which they had found in the Temple of Solomon in the year 1191, and to also eliminate the influence of their enemies, the Assassins.

In regards to leadership, by the year 1191, they were led by Robert de Sable, who was responsible for finding the Apple of Eden. He planned to conquer the Holy Land from the Muslims and then drive out the other Crusaders as well, in order to end the war. Leaders of both the other major knightly factions, several important Saracen individuals, and even the leader of the Assassins, Rashid ad-Din Sinan, were involved in this goal.

Knights Teutonic
Knights Teutonic
The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, more commonly known as the Knights Teutonic, were a monastic-military order of German origin that participated in the Third Crusade.

During the Crusade, the Teutonic Order aided King Richard I of England in the conquest of Acre, and were later positioned in the city's Middle District.

The Order's first Grand Master, Sibrand, was also secretly a member of the Templar Order, and he planned to use the Crusader fleet in Acre to blockade the city and prevent the European kingdoms from sending reinforcements, allowing the Templars to conquer the Holy Land.

Knights Hospitalier
Knights Hospitalier
The Knights Hospitalier, also known as the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, the Order of St. John, the Knights of the Hospital, and the Chevaliers of Malta, were one of the Christian orders of the Crusades. Their emblem was a white cross, often on a black background.

The Knights Hospitalier were founded in the city of Jerusalem to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land, but became a much more militaristic organization with the onset of the Crusades.

By the year 1191, they were led by Garnier de Naplouse, secretly a Templar. After the Templars had lost the Apple of Eden to the Assassins, Garnier began experimenting on his sick patients with herbs, to try and replicate the mind-controlling effects of the Apple.

Soldiers
Guards#High Middle Ages
By 1191, the Crusaders controlled the city of Acre and had guards stationed throughout the Kingdom, the region between Acre, Jerusalem, Masyaf and Damascus.

Regular guards
Regular guards were the most commonly found Crusader guards throughout the Holy Land. They wore no helmets and had only light leather armor, being the weakest Crusader guards, though their strength lay in numbers. They were also the most cowardly guards and would flee when their opponent began to triumph over them.

Guard sergeants
Guard sergeants were equipped with chainmail tabards and wore a helmet, and were often found leading guard patrols, as well as having more combat experience than regular soldiers. They were also braver than the regular guards, but would still flee from an opponent if they killed several higher ranking guards.

Guard Captains
Captains were the strongest guards, and wore chainmail armor with tabards, surcoats, chain mail gloves and various knight helms. They would rarely run away from a fight and could present a challenge to even the toughest fighters.

Templar Knights
The Templars had well trained knights who were posted throughout the Holy Land, in Crusader and Saracen cities alike. They wore similar armor to Guard Captains, though their armor sported a Templar cross, instead of the prancing lion, which was the usual Crusader symbol.

They were highly skilled and aggressive fighters, often breaking their enemy's defense with ease. Templar Knights would never run away from a fight, and would also choose to fight to the death. In total, there were at least sixty such knights, all of whom were killed by the Assassin Altaïr.

Trivia
Flags
*There were several flags spread throughout the Holy Land in Assassin's Creed, of which the following were related to the Crusaders:
**King Richard flags
**Teutonic flags
**Hospitalier flags
**Templar flags

Heralds were citizens who informed the populations of cities about recent news, such as those concerning laws, taxation, public health issues or executions.

Renaissance
Heralds came about due to the lack of an effective means of information transfer, and were precursors to the communication system of modern times.

During the Italian Renaissance, should Ezio Auditore commit a crime, the heralds would begin warning the people about the presence of the Assassin. To keep himself hidden, Ezio would often bribe them with 500 florins, and encourage them to speak of other matters. Similarly, in Constantinople, Ezio would bribe heralds with 100 Akçe.

When viewed through Eagle vision, heralds were marked with blue if they were announcing normal events. If they spoke of the Assassins (mostly lies and slander), they were seen glowing red, as any other enemy.

Trivia
*In Assassin's Creed, certain people may be found speaking publicly, attempting to convince citizens to join the Crusaders or Saracens. These men functioned much like heralds, although they were not referred to as such, and were purely aesthetic.
*Bribing a herald lowered notoriety by 50%. In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, this was lowered to 25%.
*In Assassin's Creed II, heralds would appear on the map as long as Ezio's notoriety was not at 0%. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, notoriety must have been greater than 50%, and in Revelations, they appeared around 25% Templar awareness. It should be noted that, in Assassin's Creed II, in Venice they appeared at 50% notoriety.
*In both Brotherhood and Revelations, it was possible to steal back the money that Ezio used to bribe heralds, though they would initiate a fistfight should Ezio remain in the area afterwards. The Brotherhood achievement "Easy Come, Easy Go" could be earned by doing so.
**In this achievement, a herald is referred to as an "orator."
*The heralds of Rome in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood warned about swine flu and syphilis, while in Assassin's Creed II, they warned citizens about plague.
*In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, heralds would talk about the war between Selim and his father until completing the final memory. They also commented on Manuel Palaiologos, Byzantines, and Ezio's assassination of Tarik Barleti.
*Heralds make an appearance in Assassin's Creed III as Town Criers, however they do not attract crowds like they did in earlier games, and now hold up newspapers.
*In Assassin's Creed II, you can steal the money back. In addition, if you kill him and loot his body, you will gain another 500 florins as well as the other 500 you stole.
Gilberto, known mainly as La Volpe (English: The Fox), was the leader of the Florentine and Roman thieves, and a member of the Assassin Order. Very little information was known about La Volpe, and any that was seemed mythical.

In 1478, La Volpe assisted Ezio Auditore da Firenze in locating an important Templar meeting, which resulted in Ezio preventing the Pazzi Conspiracy from succeeding. Ten years later, La Volpe was present in Venice, where the Assassins reclaimed the Apple of Eden from Rodrigo Borgia.

After the fall of Monteriggioni, La Volpe moved to Rome, where he fought the Borgia influence in the city. However, he refused to work with the Assassins because of his suspicions towards Niccolò Machiavelli. Later, after Ezio had helped him by saving some of his thieves, as well as providing him with evidence of the real traitor, La Volpe agreed to assist the Assassins again.

Biography
Early life
Very little is known about La Volpe's early life, though there were multiple myths regarding him and his abilities as a thief. He was said to have robbed the Papal carriage without any guards noticing him, including the Pope who was sitting inside.

In 1467, during a night in Florence, he was seen on the rooftops of the Palazzo della Signoria, the Palazzo Medici, and the Basilica di Santa Croce all at the same time. It was also said that he was immortal, could see through buildings, and had bright violet eyes.

Helping Ezio Auditore
Follow me. But we must move fast! Think you can keep up?
In 1478, La Volpe learned that Ezio Auditore da Firenze, the son of the late Assassin Giovanni Auditore da Firenze, had returned to Florence to assassinate the Templar Francesco de' Pazzi. Leonardo da Vinci informed Ezio that La Volpe would be able to assist him, thus Ezio sought him out in the Mercato Vecchio.

While looking for the legendary rogue, a thief pickpocketed Ezio and fled. Ezio was able to catch up with him, but as he demanded his money back, La Volpe appeared and returned the stolen money, saying that he would be willing to aid him if the Assassin could keep up with his freerunning skills. La Volpe then led Ezio to the Santa Maria Novella, where the Pazzi conspirators were to convene later that day.

La Volpe waited for Ezio near the sewers, from where Ezio would later emerge after eavesdropping on the Templar meeting. Ezio informed him that they were planning to kill the Medici during High Mass, in order to claim Florence for themselves and place their own politicians in charge. La Volpe replied that it would be disastrous if Lorenzo de' Medici were to be killed, as he was a powerful ally of the Assassins, though Ezio assured him that he would not allow the Templars to slay him.

In 1488, La Volpe and the other Assassins met in Venice to acquire the Apple of Eden from Rodrigo Borgia, the Grand Master of the Templar Order. When they arrived at Rodrigo's location, they saw him fighting with Ezio Auditore, and promptly intervened.

Eventually, Rodrigo fled, leaving the Apple behind for the Assassins. After answering many queries from Ezio, they proceeded to induct him into the Assassin Order, with each member, including La Volpe, performing a Leap of Faith afterwards.

Bonfire of the Vanities
Find the Apple, Ezio! It can't be far.
In 1494, Florence was taken over by Girolamo Savonarola, who had stolen the Apple from Ezio after an incident in Forlì. In 1497, La Volpe and Paola, a fellow Assassin and the leader of the Florentine courtesans, were contacted by Niccolò Machiavelli to help him liberate the citizens, after Ezio assassinated each of Savonarola's lieutenants.

After the lieutenants were eliminated, La Volpe, Paola, Machiavelli and Ezio gathered in front of the Palazzo Pitti to see the angry mob stand up to Savonarola. However, Savonarola tried to control the crowd with the Apple, but it was quickly knocked out of his hand by a knife thrown by Ezio.

Following this, La Volpe and the others gathered once more to witness Savonarola's execution, though Ezio reconsidered, deciding that the "mad monk" should not have to suffer the pain and humiliation of being burned alive in front of a crowd. The Assassin hurried towards him, and managed to kill Savonarola with his Hidden Blade before the flames reached him.

Ezio then gave a speech, and, looking towards the other Assassins, approvingly spoke of how he had been guided to his own path by "a few strangers."

Finding the Vault
In 1499, La Volpe gathered with his fellow Assassins in the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni, in order to unveil the location of the Vault. Through the Codex pages, they discovered that the Vault was located in Rome.

They also discovered the true reason that Rodrigo Borgia had become Pope, since it had allowed him to obtain the Papal Staff. La Volpe accompanied the other Assassins to Rome, where they created a diversion for the Borgia forces, to allow Ezio to infiltrate the Cappella Sistina.

After the Assassins returned from Rome, Monteriggioni was besieged by the Borgia, and as a result, the Assassin Mario Auditore was killed by Cesare Borgia. After this, some members of the Assassin Order, including La Volpe, traveled to Rome to dispose of the Borgia's influence there.

When Ezio found him in Rome, La Volpe was the leader of the local Thieves Guild, and with Ezio's funding, the two established La Volpe Addormentata, a base of operations for the thieves under the disguise of an inn. However, unlike in Florence, La Volpe refused to cooperate with Niccolò Machiavelli, calling him a traitor to the Assassin cause.

The thief believed that Machiavelli had betrayed them, citing that he was behind an attack on the Roman thieves, and had probably sided with the Borgia, since he had left Monteriggioni the night before it was besieged. However, La Volpe was willing to assist the Assassins after Ezio had helped him in saving some of his men from the Borgia guards.

Ezio later found the real traitor, a Venetian thief by the name of Paganino, who happened to have remained behind at the siege of Monteriggioni. At this, the Assassin quickly rushed off to keep La Volpe from killing Machiavelli.

Arriving just in time to inform him of the situation, Ezio handed over a document to La Volpe, making him realize that he was mistaken and immediate conceal his weapon. La Volpe immediately grew warmer to an oblivious Machiavelli, greeting him as a friend and ally.

La Volpe was also present during Claudia Auditore's induction into the Assassin Order, and the battle against Cesare's remaining followers before his arrest.

Personality and characteristics
La Volpe was a very agile man, able to beat Ezio in freerunning despite being older than him. He was the epitome of an Assassin, working in the shadows to such an extent that his existence was considered to be a myth.

However, La Volpe seemed to be quite wary of those who had not earned his full trust, immediately suspecting his fellow Assassin Niccolò Machiavelli of treachery as soon as he began working suspiciously. However, he completely trusted Ezio, deeming him worthy of such faith after working at his side on several occasions.

La Volpe was shown to be very fond of his thieves, often going off to defend them should they be in danger, and even asking Ezio to aid them through several assignments.

Trivia
;Name
*The "la" in La Volpe's name referred only to the fact that "volpe", the Italian word for "fox", is a feminine noun. Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean "vixen".
*The database files simply noted that "La Volpe" was his pseudonym, one he gained since it was said that only a fox could match his cunning.
**It was only in the novels of Assassin's Creed: Renaissance and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood that his name was revealed to be Gilberto. Nevertheless, he said that he preferred to be called "La Volpe."
**His english name "the fox" could be a reference to the gray fox in Bethseda's Oblivion, who is also the leader of the thieves guild.

;Equipment
*La Volpe was shown using a Butcher Knife as his primary weapon during the fight against Rodrigo Borgia.
*In Assassin's Creed: Renaissance, La Volpe used a crossbow with expert proficiency in both long-ranged and melee combat.
*In Assassin's Creed II, La Volpe was the only other Assassin besides Ezio who had a hood on, one of the most iconic features of the Assassins. The hood he wore, however, was neither white nor cut in the shape of an eagle's beak.
*Despite possessing it for a long time until given to Ezio, La Volpe was never seen using his personal sword in combat, favoring his dagger over it.

;Other
*Il Lupo shared certain characteristics with La Volpe; such as the style of his cloak and hood, as well as the format of his name.
*La Volpe was rumored to have accomplished a feat that Ezio couldn't, in being seen atop the Palazzo Medici, one of the few rooftops that could not be reached by the Assassin.
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, La Volpe did not seem to have aged at all, and in fact, he seemed to have fewer wrinkles on his face than in Assassin's Creed II.
*A glitch could occur in the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, during "The Fighter, the Lover and the Thief" sequence, wherein La Volpe could be seen in two places at once. In the middle of "Double Agent", after Ezio rescued Claudio, La Volpe could be found sitting on a bench next to La Volpe Addormentata; however, he could also be located on the roof of the building from which he and Ezio spied on Machiavelli at the beginning of the memory.
