The Apprentices, also referred to as Assassin recruits, were formerly citizens saved by Ezio Auditore from the rough streets of Rome, during the war against the Templars.

They subsequently devoted themselves to learning the ways of the Assassins Guild, motivated by their drive for revenge against the Borgia for corrupting their beautiful city, and for harassing them on a daily basis.

Operating out of the Tiber Island headquarters, the apprentices were often sent on contract missions across Europe and Asia, in order to improve their skills, combat experience and aid the Assassin cause. When not on assignments outside of Rome, the apprentices would support the efforts of Ezio and his allies, providing reinforcement during Ezio's own missions.

Recruitment
Realizing the efforts of the people of Rome to resist the Borgia, and that he would need an army of loyal Assassins to combat the armies of Cesare Borgia, Ezio traveled throughout the city, assisting the citizens wherever and whenever he could. He found many either being terrorized by or fighting against the city guards, and rescued them by killing the guards.

Upon doing so, he would offer each the chance to stand with him in his Brotherhood, and should they accept, he would send them to Niccolò Machiavelli to officially become an Assassin recruit.

The Brotherhood operated with multiple apprentices at a time, male or female, whom were instructed in combat, free running, pickpocketing, blending and other such skills.

Mobilization
During his own missions, Ezio was able to have up to six apprentices support him. They would commonly operate in pairs or alone, and were often called upon to perform Arrow Storms (wherein they would fire arrows upon any target from above), to engage in direct combat with an enemy, or to perform assassinations. Each time, Ezio would signal the apprentices to strike by raising his arm and clenching his fist.

When operating without their mentor, the apprentices would move in teams, led by a single Assassin appointed by Ezio. Together, they would complete missions across Italy (such as Rome, Florence, and Venice) as well as the rest of Europe and beyond (including Constantinople, Lisbon, Barcelona, Moscow, Paris, London, Cologne, Vienna and Calicut).

Though they would not always survive these missions, the apprentices would, when successful, return with greater skills and experience, as well as money and items that they had obtained during their travels.

Equipment and skills
Assassin apprentices were trained in a wide variety of skills and weaponry, including swords, spears, smoke bombs, throwing knives, crossbows, guns, and, of course, the hidden blade. They were also capable horsemen, and were able to do battle from horseback.

Their armor and weaponry could be customized however they chose, with each allowed to decide whether they would specialize in attack, defense, or both.

Apprentices were also given trainee robes to wear to show their affiliation to the Order. Although these were all identical, standard white robes, they were permitted to dye them a variety of colors. Once inducted into the Order as full Assassins, they were given white Assassin's robes, similar to that of Ezio's.

Promotion
Initiation into the Assassin Order
Apprentices started at the bottom of the Order, at the Recluta (Recruit) rank. As they gained experience and advanced in their skills, they would progress through several titles, before being granted the Assassino rank.

Upon completing their training, the apprentice was allowed to formally join the Assassin Order as a full-fledged Assassin. An induction ceremony would be held within the Tiber Island headquarters, where, as per tradition, the apprentice's left ring finger would be branded, and they would perform a Leap of Faith from the building's roof.

Though they did not gain the dual hidden blades upon promotion (which were reserved only for Master Assassins), they were instead given a certain sword identical to those used by the Masyaf Assassins of old, including Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Trivia
Development
* Gabe Graziani, the Community Developer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, once stated that a special cutscene would a occur when an Assassin died. Although there is no such cut scene, Ezio may approach and close the eyes of any fallen Assassins as a gesture of honor.
* It was also stated by developers that the player could pick a single Assassin recruit to be a "right-hand Assassin." However, this action is not present in any form in the game.
* In-game, apprentices attack alone or in pairs. In the Rome demo, however, they came in groups of five.

Guild Management
* The names of each apprentice are randomly generated from a set list of first names and last names.
* Each apprentice's appearance is randomized. However, their gender is dependent on the location of the map from which they are recruited.
* When managing Assassins for an Assassination contract, even when the odds of success are 100%, sometimes the mission can still be failed, although you will not lose the Assassin(s) used for that contract.
* When viewing the apprentice menu, if any are currently performing a contract mission, they may appear pale, blonde, or have incorrect eye color.
* Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy includes several memories that correspond to the missions you are able to send apprentices on, detailing their experiences while they are away.
* An apprentice, Vitellozzo Vitelli, has the same name of an Italian condottiero, who was also a friend of Bartolomeo d'Alviano. On December 31, 1502, he was killed by Micheletto Corella.

Equipment
* At Rank 5, the Recruit will gain the pistol; however, it is much weaker than Ezio's, taking 3 to 4 shots to kill a guard.
* Upon reaching Assassino rank, they receive a crossbow, but will not use it. The only time it is implied that they use the crossbow is during an Arrow Storm; however even low-ranking recruits can still be used for the attack, even if they weren't carrying a crossbow to begin with. Additionally, long bow arrows come from the rooftops, not crossbow bolts.
* Though a recruit receives white robes when they reach the rank of Assassino, any changes made to their outfit color before reaching the maximum rank will still be present on the underside of their capes.
* The appearance of apprentices in Assassin's Creed: Revelations can be adjusted by selecting if they wear hoods or masks.
* In concept and promotional artwork, as well as in trailers, Apprentices can be seen using pikes (unseen in-game) and crossbows (even when they have yet to reach the rank of Assassin). They are also seen wearing a variant of the plate armor.

Combat
* Ezio signaling for the help of his apprentices is called a "B.A.M." or "Brotherhood Assistance Maneuver."
* While in combat, apprentices have predictable attack patterns. Once called in, they will immediately attack the enemy that was targeted when the B.A.M. was called in. Once that enemy is dead, they will attempt to use their hidden blade for high-profile assassinations to kill any remaining enemies that aren't guarding against it, usually throwing a smoke bomb to allow for instant kills. Then, once engaged with any enemy, they will either slash indiscriminately with regular kicks, or parry blows until they can successfully pull off a counter kill.
* Sometimes during combat, the apprentices will glitch and just stand immobile during a fight. This can also happen if they kill their own opponent, but other enemies remain around.
* While the Arrow Storm is meant to kill all guards within sight, at times there will be one that might survive the attack, particularly if they are targeted by Ezio.
* Apprentices usually experience difficulties in defeating Brutes and Seekers during a one-on-one battle, even as full-fledged Assassins.
** However, apprentices have little trouble engaging in combat with Papal Guards.
* Unlike Ezio, apprentices can use their pistol at the same time as a heavy weapon (if equipped).
* There is a glitch that occurs when both an Assassin and Ezio try to assassinate the same target simultaneously. They will both appear to leap on him in high profile, but Ezio will then promptly teleport onto the next closest guard, killing him as well.
* If you call a B.A.M. from on top of the Castel Sant'Angelo, the apprentices will not leave afterwards.
* If you call your apprentices from inside a hay cart, it is likely that one of them will jump out of the same cart and assassinate your foes.
* It is possible to kill an apprentice by using the Apple of Eden with him or her in the blast range.
* If you call your apprentices to attack a group of guards, it is possible to see that the apprentices appear out of nowhere with a sparkling effect similar to blending.
* In Revelations, if a recruit is raised to the rank of Assassin, they will not die in battle. Rather, they will be "injured" and be unavailable for combat or missions for 20 minutes.

Behavior
* Once an apprentice is promoted to the rank of Assassino, there is a cutscene showing the Assassin performing a Leap of Faith into the Tiber River, despite the fact that they cannot swim.
* In the Story Trailer, the video showed an Assassin walking off the edge, instead of running and taking a Leap of Faith.
* Within the Tiber hideout, only two apprentices will acknowledge Ezio's presence and greet him if he stands in front of them. This applies to the apprentice standing alone in the corner of the main room, and the one standing in the ceremonial hall.
* Apprentices can sometimes be heard saying "Requiescat in pace," among other such phrases to dead enemies when a skirmish is won.
** Alternatively, they may walk up to Ezio to bow and say "I won't forget what you did for me" or "It is an honor to fight alongside you," among other things.
* Occasionally, after a battle is won, recruits will kneel and stay kneeling until Ezio leaves the area.
* If you try to follow an apprentice, they will eventually get to Tiber Island and stop; though taking various confusing turns along the way, in an attempt to disappear from the player's screen. Alternately, they will simply run along a single set path, or vanish into the ground. Generally, they will all just disappear when Ezio breaks his line of sight with them for at most five seconds.
* Apprentices receive no damage from falling, even from the top of the Castel Sant'Angelo. Also, if a guard pushes an apprentice into water, they will not die, but simply return to the Tiber Island hideout.
* Even if all your apprentices are women, the Assassin recruits in the mission "Exit Stage Right" will always be male.
* The apprentices will never travel alongside Ezio. Once their targets are dead, they will flee. This contradicts many videos produced by Ubisoft showing groups of apprentices walking or standing beside Ezio.
* The apprentices' clothes are not physics-enabled, except for the cape.
* If all of your Recruits have achieved the Rank of Assassino and one of your Assassins dies, you will have to raise another to the rank of Assassino. However, in the Ceremony, all of your Assassins will appear as Recruits.
* In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, the apprentices will develop more of a personality. When they reach level 10 they can be assigned to protect Assassin Dens to train to become Master Assassins at level 15.

Merchandise Lifts were devices that consisted of a rope and pulley system, which allowed one to travel quickly from street level up to the rooftops.

Each lift was made up of a rope attached to a suspended weight, which stretched from ground level to the pulley at the top of a beam. The rope was held in place by a lever that, upon release, dropped the weight, and allowed one to grab onto the rope and be pulled to the top of a building.

Lifts could be found in Rome, and in Renaissance or modern Monteriggioni. However, using a lift caused the weight to shatter and kill all those who the weight fell upon. Also, it rendered the lift unusable.

Lifts also worked as Chase Breakers in Abstergo Industries' Animus training program, for the use of their recruits. The lifts in the program functioned in the same manner, however, the weight would not break upon being dropped, and would instead slowly rise back into position. The lift would become available to others in roughly 3-5 seconds.

Bombs were explosive weapons used by Assassins from as early as the Middle Ages. They could be used for a variety of tactics, including escape, assault and distraction.
Smoke bombs
Smoke bombs were devices that were used more for distraction, rather than attack. Using a powder technology from the Far East, the bomb released a thick, grayish smoke screen for about eight seconds when thrown.

With a smoke bomb device, an Assassin was able to halt any enemy or target, and allow for an easy assassination or escape. This allowed them to strike specific targets, or take down larger groups of enemies without being seen or encountering resistance.

Smoke bombs were the only type of bombs that were commonly available to Ezio Auditore up until the 16th century. However, upon traveling to Constantinople during his search for the Seals, he gained access to a far more extensive choice of bombs.

During the Renaissance, smoke bombs were disposable, and had to be purchased for 350 florins each. Ezio could carry a maximum of three at once, which he stored in a non-upgradeable pouch.

Ezio also made use of smoke bombs in the city of Rome, though the actual cloud itself was visually a lot smaller than during the previous century. Smoke bombs were also used by Assassin recruits to stun guards once they reached the rank of Veterano (Veteran).

Hand-held bombs
Hand-held bombs were small explosive devices designed and manufactured by Ezio's close friend, Leonardo da Vinci. Consisting of a small, steel ball filled with sulfur, charcoal and potassium nitrate, they also possessed a small fuse which required lighting before the device could be detonated.

History
These bombs were first used against Cesare Borgia's diehards, who had amassed a sizable military force in the city of Valencia.

During the attack on Valencia, Ezio and Niccolò Machiavelli, each equipped with ten hand-held bombs, brought chaos to Cesare's military forces. They destroyed twelve Borgia ships, and an entire military encampment.

Crafting
Upon traveling to Constantinople, Ezio learned how to create a wide range of bombs, with 120 variations. In general, they are divided into three categories: lethal, tactical and diversion.

The Assassins had set up bomb-crafting stations throughout the cities, in order to be able to craft bombs whenever they came across one.

The bombs could be customized based on their different components; casing, gunpowder layer, and effect layer. The casing affected the bomb's structure, while the gunpowder layer defined the properties of the explosion itself, along with the effect layer providing a further result on detonation; such as the scattering of caltrops.

Ezio was able to collect different resources for each of these bombs, and could craft up to five bombs per pouch, given a single combination and allowed Ezio to carry a maximum of 15 bombs.

Ezio can test a bomb in the VR room to see it's effects without having to waste any bombs.
|Blood
|Once detonation was achieved, lambs blood will splatter over people near it, scaring them by thinking they have been injured.
|
|-
|Phosphorus

Hiding Spots referred to different types of hiding places which were used by members of the Assassin Order to escape pursuers or perform an ambush.

Third Crusade
During the Third Crusade, hiding spots played a significant role for Assassins, since they frequently were their only way to successfully escape from a group of pursuers. Depending on the situation, Assassins could have used different kinds of hiding spots.

Haystacks
Of all hiding spots, haystacks were the ones that offered the most tactical use. Since they could appear both on rooftops and on the ground, they were always a good hiding place. Moreover, a Leap of Faith could be performed from a rooftop into them. Haystacks usually appeared in two different versions: as a pile or in a cart.

Rooftop gardens
Rooftop gardens were small booths which were covered with curtains on the inside. Thus, they provided an easy escape for Assassins. They appeared on rooftops ubiquitously throughout the Holy Land. Their appearance could differ depending on the city and the district. Rooftop gardens in poorer districts were usually flat, whereas the ones located in the richer districts were often decorated with ornaments and had a small, sometimes gilded, cupola.

Renaissance
During the Renaissance, hiding spots were once again quite important for the Assassins. Although they were able to escape from pursuers by breaking the line of sight or fleeing the area, hiding spots still offered an alternative way to escape. However, guards became more suspicious during that time period and often searched hiding spots for their targets.

Carts
Haystacks worked exactly the same as during the Third Crusade. However, they were now rarely found on rooftops, and were instead usually in carts on the ground. Depending on the city, the hay was also often replaced with other things, such as rose leaves in more exalted cities such as Florence or Rome, or green leaves in more rural areas such as San Gimignano.

In certain locations, such as Constantinople, Castel Gandolfo or San Donato, large bushes could be found instead of haystacks. However, the visual nature was the only difference between them.

Rooftop gardens
Rooftop gardens were still present during the Renaissance and had a similar style in most cities, usually only differing in the color of the curtains. However, both Rome and Venice had rooftop gardens with a unique, posher style, usually decorated with ivy or wine ranks.

Water
Water provided an easy way to escape for Assassins, since they could jump into it from nearly every height without being hurt. This was especially helpful because guards were unable to enter the water without drowning. Moreover, they could simply dive in order to break the line of sight with their pursuers.

Wells
Wells appeared during the Renaissance everywhere throughout Italy. They worked similar to haystacks, but Assassins could not perform a Leap of Faith into them. Wells, apart from haystacks, were the only places which were always scanned by cautious Borgia Seeker guards in Rome. Their visual appearance changed depending on the city they were located in. In Constantinople, there were mutiple wells with wooden boards on top. Ezio was able to make these functional by blowing off the boards with bombs.
