Although Ubisoft has not confirmed anything yet creative director Patrice Desiliets has said that there will be an Assassins Creed 3. This installment will see Desmond become the ultimate assassin.

"Assassins Creed is story of one man relieving the lives of his ancestors. Altair was the middle of a very very long timeline. There are still many places to explore"

“Assassins Creed has always been planned to be a trilogy, and Desmond is going back in time, using the Animus to eventually become the ultimate assassin.”

-Patrice Desiliets

At E3 2009 he exclaimed “I’m telling you. At the end of AC2 you’ll say‚ ‘Holy crap, I never saw it coming!’ There will be a cliffhanger. It’s cool to have a cliffhanger,” that leads into Assassin’s Creed 3. As for the writing on the wall Patrice says “It has nothing to do with Assassin’s Creed 2, it has to do with the Assassin’s Creed universe, not the second one.”

More recently as Patrice was wrapping up production on Assassin’s Creed 2’s in September he mentions he’s looking forward to rounding out the trilogy. “I have many different ideas. I’m not ready yet to exploit them. I think I have some juice left in me left to continue this. I’ve been doing Assassin’s Creed games for the past six years. It’s tough to be bored. I was a bit bored with the Turk crusade and the monk aspect, and everything, but in this there’s a brand new setting. And it’s my first sequel; I never did a sequel before, because I didn’t do any Prince of Persia sequels. I love the idea of refining your ideas, the gameplay and what you can do with it. So I’m not bored yet.”

Setting
Assassin's Creed 3 may either see Desmond still in the Animus, or fully independent of the Animus and taking the fight against the Templars to the modern day. If the game continues in Desmond's genetic memories, there are many possible settings for AC3. Here are some possibilities.

World War II

Assassin's Creed 3 could be set in the Second World War. Ubisoft has already stated that they are looking into the possibilities of a World War II setting and having an female Assassin as the main character. Further leading to the idea is that according to Subject 16, both Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin were confirmed to be Templars. Franklin Roosevelt was also seen holding the Apple and Altair mentioned in his Codex a vision of the Atomic Bomb. Possible missions could be the many failed assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler or fighting for Pieces of Eden with the Nazi Occult. Support for this time period is found in-game as a message left by Subject 16 refers to Hitler going missing with PE4 (the fourth piece of Eden) when he was supposed to be faking his own suicide and passing the piece on.

The New World

In the Vault, Minerva mentioned Temples that held great significance. These Temples could very well be the Aztec, Inca, or Mayan pyramids that are all across Mexico and Peru. Fransisco Pizarro was also confirmed by Subject 16 to be a Templar, so the idea of Conquistadors as more than just treasure hunters is not too far off for the Assassin's Creed universe. Crystal Skulls were also mentioned by Abstergo in the e-mails so a New World setting would most likely be the Templars and Assassins hunting down the Crystal Skulls.

Japan

Japan is also a possible setting for the third Assassin's Creed. The messages left by Subject 16 show Asian architecture and even one says "YONAGUNI". Yonaguni is the westernmost of the Japanese islands and is home to the Yonaguni Monument, a large underwater rock formation that has been said to be man-made. This could be a building of some sort left by Those Who Came Before. Adding to the probability of a Japanese setting is in the short video The Truth. In the background, the mountain looks remarkably similar to Mt. Fuji. This could be coincidence, especially since it does have notable differences than the actual Mt. Fuji, (Mt. Fuji has a larger base and a sharper peak) or it could prove that Japan plays a major role in the Assassin's Creed Universe.

Character Development
The cliffhanger at the end of the game leads us to ponder about what will happen to Desmond, Lucy, and the other Assassins as well as Vidic and the Templars.

Desmond Miles

Desmond will probably develop into a true Assassin and be completely free of the Animus, completing missions in the modern day. He already has a hidden blade, and used it with great skill defeating the Abstergo guards, so it will be interesting to see how he develops as a character in AC3. Another likely idea is that Desmond and Lucy will fall in love, as it is becoming more and more obvious that both seem to share feelings for each other.

Lucy Stillman

Lucy's role in the grand scheme of things is still pretty vague, so it is hard to predict how she will end up when the cards are all down. However, it is obvious that she will help Desmond the entire way and that she will most probably become his love interest.

Warren Vidic

Despite being the scientist apparently responsible for the Animus tests Vidic appears at the end of AC2 in what is potentially a very dangerous situation, hinting he is more than just a scientist. As his true role in Abstergo, though apparently high up, Vidic will most likely be the primary antagonist for the parts of AC3 that are set in Desmond's time.
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (الطائر ابن لا أحد in Arabic) is main protagonist in Assassin's Creed, as well as the ancestor of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Desmond Miles. His first name, "Altaïr", means 'Bird of Prey' or 'Eagle'. His last name Ibn-La'Ahad means "Son of None".

Biography
Early Life
Altaïr was born to an unknown couple, consisting of a Christian woman and a Muslim man. During his childhood his parents left Masyaf for unknown reasons, though Altaïr felt little at their departure due to the nature of the Assassin order. Prior to the events of the series, Altaïr trained under Al Mualim and quickly rose among his brethren in skill. This caught Al Mualim's eye and favor, and Altaïr was eventually promoted to the rank of Master Assassin.

Altaïr's backstory before the events revealed through Desmond Miles' memories. In the prequel, Altaïr is still a high-ranking assassin who is tasked with recovering an artifact known as Chalice. On his way to find it, he has to acquire three keys and fight off Templars. It is later revealed that the Chalice is in fact a woman named Adha, but she is kidnapped by Templars under the leadership of Basilisk. Altaïr succeeds in killing Basilisk, but is unable to save Adha, who is taken away by ship. Altaïr yells that he will find her, but has he eventually succeeded or heard of her again is unknown. In Assassin's Creed II, one of the Codex pages reveals that he later caught up to Adha and had found her corpse. In the text, Altaïr states that he held her corpse and exacted vengence on those that killed her. It is hinted that he loved her, and her death deeply hurt him. The circumstances of Adha's death are not made clear.
Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
Some point after the events of Assassin's Creed, Altaïr travels to the island of Cyprus in an attempt to eliminate the remaining Templars. This is also mentioned in one of the Codex Pages in Assassin's Creed 2.

Later Life and Death
It is known that after Bloodlines, Maria bore at least two children with Altaïr, as the codex mentions he will have her talk with their sons. Also before his death, he wore a new armor, the same armor that would one day be worn by his descendant Ezio Auditore da Firenze as his Master Assassin Armor. This armor is the symbolic color of black, signifying the upper most rank in the Assassin Order. His death is unknown, but it is likely he either died in battle or in old age with his children and Maria watching over him as he passed away. It should be noted however that in his last entry into the codex he remarks about his temptations and his ability to call for the Apple and use it to extend his life, as he states "I know the knowledge is there." The fate of Altair remains unclear.

Assassin's Creed II
At the point in which Assassin's Creed II begins, Altaïr has been dead for hundreds of years. However, it is known that he left a Codex that his descendant, Ezio, will find. In it, he left a secret map which reveals the locations of Pieces of Eden scattered all over the world.

It is also shown that Altaïr bore at least two children with Maria, the templar woman who took Robert de Sable's place in Jerusalem during the first Assassin's Creed.

Altaïr's armor is accessible in the game, but acquiring it is not necessary for completing the story. It is available to the player after exploring six Assassin`s Tombs and collecting the seals therein. When brought to the vault in the Villa Auditore, all six seals will open a gate, behind which lies Altaïr's armor.

You can also get a Altaïr costume in the game from the Uplay store for 30 points. Curiously, Ezio also loses Altaïr's missing finger while wearing the clothes.

Characteristics and personality
Altaïr is an ancestor of Desmond Miles and his memories are encoded into Miles' DNA. Abstergo Industries abducted Miles in order to use the Animus on him, which would decode his genetic structure and extract vital information from the memories of Altaïr, in a project bent on New World Order. Altaïr is a master assassin instructor, capable of extraordinary acrobatic feats, a master of social stealth, fully adept in the application of the deadly arts, and a member of the Assassins' Order. Near the beginning of the game, he is demoted to the Assassins' Rank of Novice and removed of all his equipment save for his robes. In order to regain his status, he must publicly assassinate nine men who are involved in exploiting the war hostilities in the Holy Land.

Altaïr travels between the four cities (Jerusalem, Masyaf, Damascus, and Acre) to kill his victims. His extensive knowledge in the deadly arts are without question at the level of an instructor, able to infiltrate any fortification completely unnoticed, brush shoulders with a primary assassination target without alerting them to his hostile presence and strike from any direction, a testament of his undeniable mastery over "Hiding in Plain Sight", showing his understanding of the "" and the importance of the second tenet. Altaïr, bound by the second tenet of the "" has mastered the ability to become one with the crowd, so that his deadly presence and approach is masked entirely from his intended target. His ability to blend in and appear as just another face in the crowd, makes it much more possible to get in extremely close to a target and silently assassinate them using the Hidden Blade without alerting the immediate surrounding environment. Whether investigating or silently assassinating, Altaïr constantly remains anonymous out of his instinctive assassins nature, remaining anonymous for Altaïr is second nature, very briefly exposing himself to the public's eye preparing (even though very rare and extremely short in length and for good reason) to strike during a public assassination of one of "The Nine", and even public assassinations do not guarantee Altaïr's exposed appearance, he is a master assassin instructor and is highly skilled in adapting to changing situations and the changing environment, knowing all too well in how to still maintain control in the constantly dangerous and changing environment, possession of such sharp perceptional skills carries over into how he reads the crowd for any slight sign of danger. Sharp sense of awareness, will aid Altaïr greatly in survival moving about the dangerous cities, and kingdom throughout the Holy Land. As stated Altaïr's acrobatic skills help in both assassination and escape, he uses these skills to strike from many different locations and directions, mainly from affront, above, and behind when performing public assassinations which have all been recorded in virtual history according to entry wound. Altaïr's assassination expertise is unquestionable, seeing how he can appear from the crowd undetected, and quickly kill anyone he focuses on silently, then blends immediately back into the crowd. During primary assassinations Altaïr clearly knows the meaning of subtlety. Altaïr stalks the district most affected by the targets corruption, obtaining information on where and when he will be so that he may plan to properly strike. Using that knowledge better prepares for the opportune moment to strike.

Observing, and moving silently about the large crowds that usually gather within the kill zone as only a "blade in the crowd". Altaïr strikes without flaw or mercy making him very efficient in the exact moment of the strike. Highly educated upon the politics involving the Crusaders and Saracens and their religious philosophies, this educational training will help Altaïr in better understanding their territories, and the numerous factions within. It will give better perspective on perhaps why men choose certain paths in life and as the Assassins better know themselves and understand not to judge their targets but embrace their perspective on what they call justifiable action, but to put it after our own philosophy of "peace in all things". For any who threaten our cause will die under the shining sun in public. Altaïr knows that when the opportune time presents itself to strike, he must not show mercy to the target for their politically sanctioned death will ensure peace returns or so our philosophy depicts it when taught. Altaïr's social mastery ensures that low-profile kills performed while hiding amongst the crowd will succeed, allowing him to eliminate any guards patrolling the streets. Altaïr is a master at anonymous travel and the silent approach, when moving about the city streets seeking out his target Altaïr moves with the crowd as the crowd, then at the moment to strike his target, he moves as a cloaked white ghost. To get caught in the crowd with Altaïr silently stalking you is imminent death. It is as if the target is lost in a heavy and thick fog shrouding a forest of death, only its a sea of people moving about in different directions until one of those sudden bumps turns out to be the sharp Hidden Blade being extended into one of your vital organs. During escape such skills come in handy for quickly seeking high ground or space between the encroaching city guard. When ranked a novice, Altaïr was ordered to start tracking his targets personally by Al Mualim. He showed that, in combination with social stealth mastery and tracking knowledge, blending into the crowd and becoming simply another face in the crowd allowed Altaïr to carry out his assassination target investigations more easily.

His social stealth expertise helps when dealing with Crusaders and Saracen guards. When moving about a city looking for a highly public figure marked for assassination one must never call for attention, it runs the risk of possibly breaking the second and third tenet within the "". Altaïr is trained extensively on how to traverse the city disguised as a holy scholar. Dressing as a scholar allows the silent eagle assassin to get close enough to a target without raising suspicion before striking. Scholar robe disguises aid in assassinations due to the simple facts they happen in broad daylight within the open public for the people to witness and spread news of its happening and the disguise masks your true appearance and intentions. This disguise also makes travel easier as scholars have less restraint within the cities, and applying the proper mannerisms to aide the disguise helps that much more. Through experience and instinct Altaïr keenly observes the environment remaining alert at all times to the extremely active guard presence that surrounds him.

Equipment and skills
Like other assassins Altair is trained in stealth assassination techniques, hand to hand and weapons combat, blade throwing, climbing, urban acrobatics, eavesdropping, interrogation, and pick pocketing.

Altaïr's most interesting weapon is the Hidden Blade--a weapon similar to a katar, which is used for close-range assassinations. It is mounted on the inside of his left hand gauntlet, and when deployed, extends between the space left by his amputated ring finger. He flicks a trigger on a ring to make the blade appear where his finger had once been. This amputation was part of the initiation for becoming an assassin of the Hashshashin sect. Altaïr also uses a combination of throwing knives, a sword, the Hidden Blade, and his fists. The throwing knives are very useful for taking down archers. Use of the sword is slower than use of the dagger, of which is fast and light and can be used in tandem with the throwing knives. However, attacking with the sword is much more damaging to the enemies than when using the dagger. Altaïr also uses an ability called "Eagle Vision," a sort of "sixth sense" that lets him see people's intentions. Guards appear in red, allies in blue, citizens with information in white and assassination targets in yellow.

Behind the Scenes
The name Altaïr is an Arabic word, which means "The Flying Eagle". In interviews, the game's producer, Jade Raymond has stated that while in mid-air, Altaïr's shadow resembles that of an eagle. This is because of his attire, which includes a point at the front of the hood (to resemble a beak) and slits through the back of the outfit (to resemble tail feathers). The second part of his name, Ibn-La'Ahad means 'son of no-one', reflecting his mysterious origins. It has been revealed by Raymond that his father was a Muslim and his mother a Christian. His appearance is remarkably similar to Desmond's, only a few scars seeming to separate their appearances at first glance. His rebellious nature and mission failure would lead to his severe demotion, placing him on the same level as a raw initiate to the Assassin Order. That same attitude cost Malik his left arm, as well as the life of his brother Kadar at the beginning of the story. As the situation progresses and Altaïr listens to the final words of his assassination victims, listening to their revelations involving them and their justified corrupt deeds within the Holy Land and their cities, his attitude changes and he becomes less impetuous, overconfident, demanding, arrogant, self-centred and impatient, learning to perceive more between the lines and actions of the world while drawing upon the teachings of the "Assassins Creed". Near the end of the conflict, all of his brash and rebellious nature, has vanished behind a demeanour of calm, focused, driven, humble, more patient and higher wisdom of understanding. But with this he learns what it is the "Assassins Creed" truly means, and recommends of him as an Assassin.

Trivia
*Jade Raymond, producer of Assassin's Creed, revealed during an interview at the Ubidays 2007 that Altaïr was born to a Muslim father, and a Christian mother.

The Assassins, also known as the Hashshashin, are an organized Order of Assassins, who are in a continuous low-grade war with their greatest adversaries: the Knights Templar. The order has existed for at least a millennium, and was active during the Third Crusade, the Renaissance, and even into the year 2012. The order believes in a firm creed of values that strictly govern their way of life, consisting of three tenets: stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent, hide in plain sight, and never compromise the Brotherhood. These tenets are lived daily by Assassins in the fight for "peace in all things". The Assassins carry out their duties through political strategic assassination, and by doing so, potential threats to peace are forever suppressed. By killing one individual, the Assassins believe that they can save tens of thousands.

Through their work, Assassins could be easily looked upon as keepers of peace. Assassins believe that they fight on behalf of those people who do not possess their abilities or resources to speak out against those in power who harm the powerless. Assassins speak to these corrupted men for the dispossessed by introducing them to the sharp edge of a blade. By doing so, the common people are freed from the shackles of oppression. Even though the Assassins fight for the people, they are feared, because no matter how one looks at the matter, killing above the bounds of the law for noble purposes is still killing, still an essentially evil act. The only way to justify the Assassins' deeds is to see them through the prism of long-term self-defense, though many moralists and philosophers claim this is just sophistry, a rationalization for murder. The Assassins were most feared due to their terrifying reputation for taking life in public places before many witnesses. The Assassins did so to create an atmosphere in which it was not safe to commit corrupt acts under the sun. This spread fear amongst their enemies, for they never knew when they might fall to an enemy who they could not see or hear.

Assassins used a particularly efficient weapon for assassinations: the Hidden Blade. A single thrust from this weapon could change the course of the Holy Land's future, as well as that of all future history. Such power could easily go to an Assassin's head, causing him to lift himself above others knowing he could change history, thus becoming as corrupt as the men whom he slew. But the devotion to the Assassins primary goal (peace in all things) and the knowledge of their "Assassin's Creed" provided the moral guidance necessary to keep the corruption caused by ultimate power at bay. This was not always the case. In order to have the precise political impact desired by an assassination, the Assassins possessed extensive political knowledge, and remained always in tune with the ever-changing politics surrounding the many empires of the Holy Land and later of Western Europe during the Renaissance. They used this information to decide whose death would most benefit the people of their region.

Obtaining this information was done by stationing agents within the various cities of the Middle East and Europe to keep an eye on the actions of the various nobles and rulers. When deployed on missions, elite master assassins or blade hands were the ones responsible for carrying out public assassinations. They worked alone in the field, usually disguised as holy scholars of any of the three major monotheistic faiths or other suitable caricatures. When stationed in a particular city, the Assassins would spend an immense amount of time getting acquainted with their environment and learning where and when it would be best to strike at their chosen target. The actual strike itself always took place in public. By performing the murder in the public's eye, the Assassins knew without a doubt that news and information about the assassination would spread quickly amongst the common people, and those other corrupt men who served the one assassinated, effectively spreading fear and disrupting the chain of command among the corrupted regime that had been targeted by the Assassins.
In 1191, during the Third Crusade, the Assassins Order has its stronghold in the fortress of Masyaf. Led by Al Mualim, the other assassins battle with the Templars and their leader, Robert de Sable over ideologies and the means with which to accomplish them. It is the Third Crusade and low-scale war with the Templar's that Altair must find wisdom within himself from the "Assassins Creed" in order to accomplish the assassinations appointed for his redemption. As the war intensifies and Altair begins to understand the Assassin's true way of life, the "Creed", its meaning begins to open Altair's eyes and mind to question his cause and the lives he is meant to take in the name of the Assassin's peace. Is killing these men the true and only way to teach those that have strayed? Or do they not deserve a second chance; "misguided perhaps but pure in motive". Altair, after killing Robert de Sable, confronts his Master, Al Mualim, who has secretly been a high-ranking Templar the entire time. After a grueling struggle, Altair defeats Al Mualim and becomes the leader of the Assassins, though many lives were lost during Al Mualim's short reign of Terror. Altair then dedicates the Order to hunting down and destroying the remaining Artifacts, left by "Those Who Came Before," using the Piece of Eden to find them.

The Piece of Eden
The Piece of Eden is one of several ancient objects left by Those Who Have Come Before, possessing different effects, that is able to bend people to the will of the user. One of the greatest weapons known to man, it is capable of ending wars and (provided it is used correctly) ushering in a forced peace.

It is believed by the staff of Abstergo Industries and the Templars that the Piece of Eden, along with other artifacts like it, was the source of such miracles as the Parting of the Red Sea, the successful use of the Trojan Horse by the Greeks to win the Trojan War, the miracles surrounding "the Christ-figure" who founded the Christian faith and the Biblical plagues that ravaged Egypt, among other supernatural happenings.

Apart from its power to force almost anyone into serving its possessor, the Piece of Eden's greatest power is that its existence essentially disproves the existence of an all-powerful God. The Templar Order had already committed itself to exposing the claims of all religions as false, and the Piece of Eden is perfectly suited to the successful pursuit of this purpose.

Incidentally, each Piece of Eden also contains a holographic map of the Earth that shows the location of all the other Artifacts. The Masyaf Piece of Eden was destroyed during its experimental use by Abstergo Industries at the Denver International Airport. Using Altair's memory of events, however, the map showed the locations of the other Pieces of Eden.

After Altaïr took control of the Assassins, their new goal was to hunt down and destroy the last of the Templars and the Pieces of Eden. During the events of Assassin's Creed Bloodlines, Altaïr starts to study the artifact, writing about its powers and his own theories. When the Cypriots blamed Altaïr for the disasters that struck the island and tried to attack him, he used the Piece of Eden to control their minds, forcing them to hear the truth, that the real culprit was the Templar Grand Master, Armand Bouchart. After reaching the Archives in Limassol, and killing Bouchart, Altaïr kept the Masyaf Piece of Eden, not leaving it in the Archives as he had first intended. It is unknown what happened to the Masyaf Piece of Eden after Altaïr and Maria traveled "East". On an interesting note, the object is referred to as the "Apple of Eden" in the game.

In Assassin's Creed 2, it is revealed that the Apple itself has a rather extensive history of changing hands while decrypting the "Truth" files left by Subject 16. Notable figures in history have used it, although for varying purposes; including, but not limited to: Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Gandhi, Houdini, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and even Winston Churchill and Adolph Hitler. It is also revealed that there are at least 3 Apples remaining in the world, which represent the three divine Golden Apples of Greek mythology.

Resistance
In an e-mail at Abstergo Industries it is revealed that the company's leaders are worried that the Pieces of Eden are not all that is needed to achieve their goal. It is mentioned that some people may be resistant to the mind control effect of the Piece of Eden and that other "Artifacts" must be found to ensure no one is left to cause trouble in the Templar's planned "New World". The only three people so far to show a resistance against the Pieces of Eden are an unnamed person present at the DIA incident, Altaïr, and Ezio. The first sends an e-mail to Dr. Vidic declaring "I know what you did" and gives a firsthand account of the artifact's failed experiment there. Of note is that this person seems to be acting alone and is therefore unlikely to know of the Templars or the Assassins and may not be a member of either organization themselves. Altaïr's resistance is shown when Al Mualim shows him the treasure but Altaïr simply says that to him it is just a piece of silver and does not understand how Al Mualim can believe it to be pure temptation as he describes. This response surprises Al Mualim who later reveals that he had shown the Piece of Eden to Altaïr in an attempt to hypnotize him, but for some reason he could not. However, even though Altaïr is resistant against its hypnotic effect, the Piece of Eden can still do some things to him such as: immobilizing him, causing him to hallucinate and clouding his mind, both of which can be observed during the final battle. Finally, Ezio's resistance is shown when he finally confronts Rodrigo Borgia in Rome. Although this instance has Ezio himself using the Apple while Rodrigo uses the Staff. But Ezio shows no resistance to the combined power of the Apple and the Staff.

There is a high potential that Altaïr passed on this gift to Desmond Miles and his other descendants. Although a small number of theories can be made upon decrypting Truth File #18 because while decrypting it Subject 16 makes comments about scientists finding a specific neurological receptor in the human brain that responds solely to the effects of the Eden artifacts.
Theories About the Piece of Eden and the Other Artifacts
#We are told by Dr. Vidic that they were left by Those Who Have Come Before.
#The Artifacts also seems to have other abilities like time travel (it is mentioned in the e-mails on Lucy Stillman's computer). It is possible that they were made in the future and, for some reason, sent back in time. Perhaps when the Piece of Eden was damaged in Assassin's Creed, the map was not showing where to find the other artifacts but it was picking a location for it to travel to safety.
#There was a race of beings on Earth, whilst dinosaurs lived, that created the Artifacts. And it was no meteorite that hit the earth, but some huge explosion caused by the Artifacts that ended much of the life on the Earth at the time.
#Desmond and his ancestors all have some sort of link with the Artifacts, which would explain why they can resist its power.
#(Please edit later as the proof can be found on Youtube) Adam and Eve (who had blue, glowing lines) managed to steal "The Apple" by using free-running (Supporting theory 4) from the Garden of Eden (which looked more like a facility with seemingly enslaved workers working to build possibly more pieces). All of this can be found by finding all the glyphs left by Subject 16 and unlocking the video, "The Truth".
#It has been suggested that at some point multiple pieces of eden became centralized and governed over by a council of Templars and dispatched to parts of the world in which they perceived there power to be in jeopordy. This can be assumed form the decoded glyphs Ezio helps Desmond uncover in Assassins creed II. In one such message a world map is shown with a number of high level dignitaries and historical figures, all implied targets of assassins, all of which were directly involved with restorations, or attempted restorations of trappings of power;IE: Mary I of England whom is on the list, Following her father (Henry VIII) creation of the first protestant state, as well as his standing objection against Pope Paul III, remained a catholic and on her coronation went about persecuting all whom rejected the church's power. It can be assumed she was given a piece of eden by the pope, or other machinations of the templars to bring England back into the fold. As she is cannonically refered to as assassinated by in game content, it can be assumed that instead of confiscating the Apple, the assassins respected the lineage and bestowed it upon Elizabeth I.((This is not fully true as some on this list also represent apparent Templar assassins whom were killed in vengeance for being successful in some measure (John W. Booth).))

Posssible Artifacts and Functions
These artifacts are based on the locations given in Assassin's Creed, and the clues and hints found in all the games.

*The Philosopher's Stone: Converts any material into pure gold.
*The Holy Grail: Although the Templars doubt it's existence, it could prove to be real. Possible Functions: Grants eternal life, among other things.
*The Crystal Skulls: Quartz Skulls found in Ancient Temples. Telepathic Communication. Currently possessed by the Templars.
*The "Philadelphia Artifact": Time Travel
*The Golden Fleece: A seemingly indestructible piece of armor or cloak. Referenced to in Altair's Codex as a possible Eden artifact.
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (الطائر ابن لا أحد in Arabic) is main protagonist in Assassin's Creed, as well as the ancestor of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Desmond Miles. His first name, "Altaïr", means 'Bird of Prey' or 'Eagle' ('Eagle' is also the meaning of the first name of his descendant Ezio).
Biography
Early Life
Altaïr was born to an unknown couple, consisting of a Christian woman and a Muslim man.

Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles

Assassin's Creed
You're wrong. And that's why you must be put to rest.

His extensive knowledge in the deadly arts are without question at the level of an instructor, able to infiltrate any fortification completely unnoticed, brush shoulders with a primary assassination target without alerting them to his hostile presence and strike from any direction, a testament of his undeniable mastery over "Hiding in Plain Sight", showing his understanding of the "Assassins Creed" and the importance of the second tenet. Altaïr, bound by the second tenet of the "Assassins Creed" has mastered the ability to become one with the crowd, so that his deadly presence and approach is masked entirely from his intended target.

When moving about a city looking for a highly public figure marked for assassination one must never call for attention, it runs the risk of possibly breaking the second and third tenet within the "Assassins Creed".

His death is unknown, but it is likely he either died in battle or in old age with his child and Maria watching over him as he passed away. It should be noted however that in his last entry into the codex he remarks about his temptations and his ability to call for the Apple and use it to extend his life, as he states "I know the knowledge is there." The fate of Altair remains unclear.

Assassin's Creed II
Although Altaïr is supposed to be dead for hundreds of years from the events of Assassin' Creed II, it is known that he left a Codex that his descendant Ezio will have to find its secret.

It is also shown that Altaïr bore at least two children with Maria, the templar woman who took Robert de Sable's place in Jerusalem during Assassin's Creed 1.

As we know from the game, Altaïr is well-known among Assassins and they respect him as a hero. In his Codex he left a secret map, leading to Pieces of Eden all around the world.

Altaïr`s armor is accessible in the game but is not neccessary to complete it. It is available to the player after he explores six Assassin`s Tombs. When brought to the Vault in the Villa Auditore, all six seals will open a gate which behind it lies Altair's armor.

Trivia
*Jade Raymond, producer of Assassin's Creed, revealed during an interview at the Ubidays 2007 that Altaïr was born to a Muslim father, and a Christian mother.

Desmond Miles is considered to be the true protagonist of Assassin's Creed.

Biography
Early life
Desmond was born on a "farm" much like Masyaf, a modern day Assassin enclave, isolated and 'off the grid' as it was. Desmond was apparently supposed to be born and raised as an assassin. He was unable to leave this small community of thirty or so people. He later escapes by himself, claiming that he wanted to see the rest of the world. Desmond states that he has no regrets leaving his father or mother and at one point when Vidic accuses him of being an assassin he responds "I'm not an assassin...not anymore". At some time in his life, Desmond became a bartender. Desmond never used his real name before being taken. He used cash only, he was found from his fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license. He is currently being modeled by Francisco Randez.

Assassin's Creed
The story starts off with flashes of Altaïr in an odd cloudy area which will turn out to be the garden at the back of the home base in Masayaf. After about five minutes, Desmond wakes up to find himself on top of a machine and two figures with lab coats near him. He has no recollection of getting to where he is now and is told that he is being held captive. When he questions why, the answer he receives is somewhat unbelievable.

The people in the lab coats are Dr. Lucy Stillman and Dr. Warren Vidic. They run the Animus project for Abstergo Industries. The Animus is a device used to extract genetic memory from an individual about their ancestors. According to Dr. Vidic, the memories of our past relatives are stored in our DNA.

Desmond is told that he has information that someone needs. While Desmond claims to be nothing more than a bartender, it is alluded to that he is an assassin, or at least was one at some point in the past. He seems to have the same age, weight, and height as Altaïr at the time that the Animus decodes. He also wears a white hooded-sweatshirt, similar to Altaïr's clothing. Desmond also has a scar on the right side of his face, going downwards across the lips, Altaïr also has a identical scar. You can see it if you get Altaïr to face a wall or cliff and move the camera around to see his face close up. Moreover, his ancestors were assassins. There is a specific memory in the life of his ancestor Altaïr that the Doctors are trying to access, but Desmond's subconscious mind is blocking access to the memory and they need his help to access it. If he refuses to assist them, they threaten to induce a coma, continue their work, and, when done with Desmond, leave him to die.

Without much choice, Desmond agrees to help them.

Over the next few days, Desmond is removed from the Animus several times; either to give him time to rest or as occurred at one point, because the Animus was overheating. During these periods he finds that someone has left the code for his sleeping quarter’s door in his closet, allowing him to go out into the Animus chamber alone, where he accesses Abstergo's computer system, trying to learn why he was brought there. He does this both with Stillman's access pen, that she apparently forgot, and Vidic's which he stole. He however remains unable to escape and learns nothing that makes his captives goals clear. At one point his memory viewing is interrupted by a group of Assassins who have apparently launched a rescue attempt, caught in a gun battle with Abstergo's guards. Desmond however cannot see this only hear the gunfire. Vidic later states that these Assassins were not only killed, but were the last of the Assassins, possibly as a means of demoralising Desmond; Lucy Stillman's actions, however, suggest otherwise. After accessing the target memory Abstergo’s executives order Desmond killed, but some quick thinking on Lucy’s part spares him this fate and he is ordered to be kept at Abstergo until he has no possible use to them. By this point Desmond begins to develop “the bleeding effect” (mentioned in Lucy's E-Mails as affecting previous test subjects)as he manifests Altaïr’s eagle vision allowing him to see cryptic messages written on the walls of the chamber (presumably test subject sixteen, the subject before Desmond, who is alluded to in the E-Mails) and see that Lucy Stillman is indeed his ally.

Assassin's Creed II
Spoiler
Desmond uses the Free-Running skills (acquired by the Bleeding Effect, which started in Assassin's Creed with him gaining Eagle Vision) to flee Abstergo with Lucy, to a modern Assassins' hideout, where is the Animus 2.0 is waiting for them. Desmond and Lucy also fight off several guards using hand-to-hand combat similiar to Altair and Ezio. Whether this is due to the Bleeding Effect, or Desmond's own skills, is unknown but during the escape from Abstergo the unique finishing moves he does on guards it can be asumed it is his own skill.

At the start of 2, Desmond and Lucy escape Abstergo and fight some guards at the exit, as you progress further, Desmond and Lucy run to an elevator, Lucy does not know the passcode, then Desmond uses Eagle Vision to type in the correct one, Lucy asks Desmond how he did it, but he doesn't know, you then get to the hideout and meet Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. At the end of the game a "god", Minerva, warns Desmond of the destruction of the world. After getting out of the Animus after seing this,Lucy informs Desmond that the their stronghold is under attack and she hands him a hidden blade, Desmond and Lucy fight off Templars and escape. Lucy mentions that they are heading north to another safehouse, possibly to both analyse Minerva's warning (and possibly the Truth video) and decide the next course of action.

During the course of the game, Desmond acquires all the skills of Ezio through the Bleeding Effect of the Animus. His hand-to-hand combat skills are much improved from the escape from Abstergo, and he begins to show a mastery of free running and climbing techniques.

Vidic later states that these Assassins were not only killed, but were the last of the Assassins, possibly as a means of demoralising Desmond, Lucy Stillman's actions, however, suggest otherwise.

At the start of Assassins Creed 2 Desmond and Lucy free run off Abstergo and fight some guards at the exit you then get to the hideout and meet Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. At the end of the game a "god", Minerva, warns Desmond of the destruction of the world. After getting out of the Animus after seing this, Desmond and the others fight off Templars and escape. Lucy mentions that they are heading north

Vidic later states that these Assassins were not only killed, but were the last of the Assassins, possibly as a means of demoralising Desmond, Lucy Stillman's actions, however, suggest otherwise.

During the course of the game, Desmond acquires all the skills of Ezio through the Bleeding Effect of the Animus. His hand-to-hand combat skills are much improved from the escape from Abstergo
Biography
Early Life
Altaïr was born to an unknown couple, consisting of a Christian woman and a Muslim man.

Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles

Assassin's Creed
You're wrong. And that's why you must be put to rest.

When moving about a city looking for a highly public figure marked for assassination one must never call for attention, it runs the risk of possibly breaking the second and third tenet within the "Assassins Creed".

That same attitude cost Malik his right arm, as well as the life of his brother Kadar at the beginning of the story.

It is also shown that Altaïr bore a child with Maria the woman who took Robert de Sable's place in Jerusalem.

As we know from the game, Altaïr is well-known among Assassins and they respect him as a hero. In his Codex he left a secret map, leading to Pieces of Eden all around the world.

Altaïr`s armor is accessible in the game and is neccessary to complete it. It is available to the player after he explores six Assassin`s Tombs. When brought to the Vault in the Villa Auditore, all six seals will open a gate which behind it lies Altair's armor.

Trivia
*Jade Raymond, producer of Assassin's Creed, revealed during an interview at the Ubidays 2007 that Altaïr was born to a Muslim father, and a Christian mother.
*In Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, Altaïr says "My God" when he is an atheist, it is unknown if this is just a mistake by the scriptwriter, or if Altaïr began practicing religion. However, it is also possible that the phrase was used simply as a statement of surprise.
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (الطائر ابن لا أحد in Arabic) is the character whom the player will play as most in Assassin's Creed, as well as the ancestor of Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Desmond Miles. His first name, "Altaïr", means 'Bird of Prey' or 'Eagle' ('Eagle' is also the meaning of the first name of his descendant Ezio).

Assassin's Creed: Altaïr's Chronicles

Assassin's Creed
You're wrong. And that's why you must be put to rest.

When moving about a city looking for a highly public figure marked for assassination one must never call for attention, it runs the risk of possibly breaking the second and third tenet within the "Assassins Creed".

That same attitude cost Malik his right arm, as well as the life of his brother Kadar at the beginning of the story.

It is known that after Bloodlines, Maria bore at least two children with Altaïr, as the codex in assassin's creed 2 mentions he will have her talk with their sons. Also before his death, he wore a new armor, the same armor that would one day be worn by his descendant Ezio Auditore da Firenze as his Master Assassin Armor.

Nothing is true, Everything is permitted.

The Assassins, also known as the Hashshashin, are an organized Order of Assassins, who are in a constant low-scale war with their greatest adversaries: the Knights Templar. The order has existed over at least a millennium, including the Third Crusade, the Renaissance, and even lasting into the year 2012. The order believes in a firm creed of values that strictly govern their way of life, consisting of three tenets: stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent, hide in plain sight, and to never compromise the brotherhood. The tenets are lived by daily in the fight for "peace in all things". The Assassins carry out their duties through political strategic assassination, and by doing so, potential threats to peace will be forever suppressed.

Through their work, Assassins could be easily looked at as political keepers of peace. Fighting on behalf of the people who do not possess the abilities, or better put, resources to speak out against the men in power who harm them. Assassins speak to these men of corruption for them, by introducing them to the sharp edge of a blade. By doing so, the people are freed from the shackles of their oppression. Even though the Assassins fight for the people, they are feared, because no matter how you look at it, killing is killing. The only way to justify it is self-defense, if in fact that's truly what it was. The Assassins were most feared due to their terrifying reputation for taking life in public. Creating an atmosphere in which it is not safe to commit ill acts under the sun spreads fear amongst their enemies, never knowing when they may fall to an enemy who they never see or hear.

Assassins possessed a specific weapon most efficient for assassinations: the Hidden Blade. A single thrust from this weapon could change the course of the Holy Land's future, as well as history. Such power could easily go to a blade hand's mind, causing him to lift himself above others knowing he could change history. But the devotion to their cause (peace in all things) and the knowledge of the "Assassins Creed" provided the guidance necessary to deter them from such thoughts. This was not always the case. In order to have a precise impact caused by an assassination, the Assassins possessed extensive political knowledge, always in tune with the ever-changing politics surrounding the empires of the Holy Land. They used this to decide whose death would most benefit the land.

Obtaining information was done by stationing agents within the cities to keep an eye on their actions. When deployed on missions, elite master assassins or blade hands were the ones responsible for carrying out public assassinations. They worked alone in the field, usually disguised as holy scholars or other suitable images. When stationed in a city, the Assassins would spend an immense amount of time getting acquainted with their environment and learning where and when it would be best to strike at their marked target. The actual strike itself took place in public. By performing the murder in the public's eye, the Assassins knew without a doubt that news and information about the assassination would spread quickly amongst the people, and those possibly tied to the one assassinated, effectively spreading fear and disrupting the chain of command targeted by the Assassins.

Assassin's Creed
It has been announced in the May 2009 issue of Game Informer that the Assassins have "gone underground", but the order still continues their battle with the Templars. Ezio, who was announced as the game's protagonist, is an Italian nobleman who joins the order to get revenge on the people that killed his father. It may be indirectly or directly due to the Templars.

The Piece of Eden is one of several ancient objects left by Those Who Have Come Before, possessing different effects, able to bend people to the will of the user. One of the greatest weapons known to man, it is capable of ending wars and (provided it is used correctly) ushering in a forced peace.

It is believed by Abstergo and the Templars that the Piece of Eden, along with other artifacts like it, was the effector behind such miracles as the Parting of the Red Sea, the success of the Trojan Horse, the miracles surrounding 'the Christ-figure' and the plagues of Egypt, among other things.

Apart from its power to force almost anyone into serving the possessor, its greatest power is that it essentially disproves God. The Templar Order and the Assassins already committed themselves to exposing religion as false, and the Piece of Eden is perfectly suited to this purpose.

Incidentally, each one also contains a holographic map of the earth that shows the location of all the other Artifacts. The Piece of Eden, the Masyaf Piece, was destroyed during its experimental use by Abstergo at Denver International Airport. Using Altair's memory of events, however, the map showed the locations of the others.

After Altaïr took control of the Assassins their new goal became to hunt down and destroy the last of the templars and the pieces of Eden. During the events of Assassin's Creed Bloodlines, Altaïr starts to study the artifact, writing about it's powers and his own theories. When the Cypriots blame Altaïr for the disasters that struck the island, and try to attack him, he uses the Piece of Eden to control their minds, forcing them to hear the truth, that the real culprit was the Templar Grand Master, Armand Bouchart. After reaching the Archives in Limassol, and killing Bouchart, Altaïr however keeps the Masyaf Piece, not leaving it in the Archives, where he had intended to leave it. It's unknown as to what happened to the Piece after Altaïr and Maria traveled "East". On an interesting note, the object it's referred to as the "Apple of Eden" on this game.

In Assassin's Creed 2, it is revealed that the Apple itself has a rather extensive history of changing hands while decrypting the "Truth" files left by Subject 16. Notable figures in history have used it for furthering the Templar's "New World"; including, but not limited to: Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington, Gandhi, Houdini, Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and possibly even Winston Churchill and Adolph Hitler. It is also revealed that their are at least 3 Apples (Representing the three Golden Apples of Greek mythology.)

Free Will & Temptation
In the cut-out scene at Masyaf, after Altaïr assassinates his sixth target, Al Mualim makes some statements about the Piece of Eden other than those mentioned above. Altaïr asks Al Mualim, "What is it?" The answer is, "It is Temptation! It is what drove Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden." It other words, it was what was called "the apple" from the Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil - the one The Serpent offered to Eve. What he was offering her was the free will to make her decisions based upon knowledge rather than blind obedience. Free Will, which Altaïr champions repeatedly - to the end, is this Temptation.

It's hypnotic effect has no affect on Altaïr. Why?

The "success of the Trojan Horse" - while implied - is not what is said. Al Mualim names the goddess Eris specifically as being responsible for the Trojan War. Eris is the goddess of Dis-Order and Chaos. Order is a highly valued principle throughout the game, as well as within our societies. We are shown throughout the game to what lengths men of power will go to maintain and hold onto that power through Order - an order that is imposed by them at any means or cost. The people are merely pawns in their games.

They are games of control and manipulation, through promises of a better life...one that does not come until death. One cannot achieve this unless one is obedient to the laws and lives them to the letter. To take on the temptation of Free Will and accept responsibility for ones self and whatever one does or says is to step outside these carefully laid boundaries of behavior. If too many people do this, then order ceases to exist. It is why books have repeatedly been burned throughout history; why scholars and intellectuals have been persecuted. They may know too much and "their words infect others" - as Madj Addin says. Several times through the game things are said that indicate the belief that mankind is incapable of doing this without crime and violence erupting in its wake. The "lies" told in the books that Jubair would burn speak of things like free will and other knowledge that would reveal the lies they are telling to be untrue. Altaïr is described as being "arrogant" and "a traitor" - like a certain angel who rebelled against the laws of Heaven...for Altaïr believes that people should have the free will to decide their own destinies. He exhibits free will at the beginning, claiming his way is the "right way" and he knows better than Malik or Kadar. During the final cut-out scene with Al Mualim, Free Will and Illusion are mentioned extensively.

Being a 'sandbox game' gives you the illusion of free will. Some reviewers have bemoaned the fact that it is not an open-ended game, but an open-ended game would not have been appropriate to the story.

Resistance
In an e-mail at Abstergo it is revealed that the organization are worried that the pieces of Eden are not all that is needed to achieve their goal. It is mentioned that some people may be resistant to the mind control effect and that other "Artifacts" must be found to ensure no one is left to cause trouble in the Templar's planned "New World". The only two people so far to show a resistance against the pieces of Eden are an unnamed person present at the DIA incident and Altaïr. The former sends an e-mail to Dr Vidic declaring "I know what you did" and gives a firsthand account of the artifacts's failed experiment there. Of note is that this person seems to be acting alone and is therefore unlikely to know of the Templars or the Assassins and may not be one themselves. The latter's resistance is shown when Al Mualim shows him the treasure but Altaïr simply says that to him it is just a piece of silver and does not understand how Al Mualim can believe it to be pure temptation as he describes. This response surprises Al Mualim who later reveals that he had shown the piece of Eden to Altaïr in an attempt to hypnotize him, but for some reason he could not. However, even though Altaïr is resistant against the hypnotisim the piece of Eden can still do some things to him such as: immobilizing him, causing him to hallucinate and clouding his mind, this can be observed during the final battle.

There is a high potential that Altaïr passed on this gift to Desmond Miles and his other descendants. Although a small number of theories can be made upon decrypting Truth File #18 where while decrypting it, Subject 16 makes comments on scientists finding a specific neurological receptor that responds solely to the Apple's hypnotism power. (At least that's what is implied.)
Theories About the Piece of Eden and the Other Artifacts
#We are told by Dr. Vidic that they were left by Those Who Have Come Before. "They" could possibly be Aliens, and the artifacts are made of their advanced technology.
*The "Tunguska Artifact": Destroyed. Possible Function: Generation of destructive explosions, which backfired due to Assassin's and Templar's tampering. Possibly the "Fire from Heaven" that destroyed Sodom and Gommorah
*The Holy Grail: Although the Templar's doubt it's existence, it could prove to be real. Possible Functions: Grants eternal life, among other things.
*The Crystal Skulls: Telepathic Communication. Currently possessed by the Templars.
*The "Philadelphia Artifact": Time Travel
*The Golden Fleece: A seemingly indestructible piece of armor or cloak. Referenced to in Altair's Codex as a possible Eden artifact.
