Seekers were guards who, as their name suggested, would search through hiding places, on the suspicion that an Assassin had taken refuge within one.

They were slightly more heavily-armored than a standard guard, though less so than Brutes, and always carried long weapons such as spears and halberds.

Combat
Seekers were extremely intelligent, and would persistently search wagons, wells and piles of hay in an attempt to find hidden Assassins, whether or not they had previously seen one. They often traveled with other lower-ranked soldiers, usually as a pair, or in groups of four.

Upon engaging an enemy in battle, a Seeker could perform both normal and special attacks.

Normal attacks
The Seekers' normal attacks could be blocked using any weapon, however, they could not be countered with any sheath-able weapon or short blade.

Instead, they could only be countered lethally with a heavy weapons, another long weapon carried by Seekers themselves, or a Hidden Blade. The timing for the latter was rather difficult, however, due to the fraction of a second timing window.

An attack could also be evaded, or countered through an empty-handed disarm, which could in turn be followed up with a lethal counter-attack with the Seeker's own weapon.

Special attacks
The Seeker's armed special attack, the Sweep, would knock a target to the ground by sweeping their feet out from under them. This did no damage, though it opened up the target to follow-up attacks as they lay on the ground.

The Sweep could not be countered, and needed to be either interrupted or dodged. A Seeker about to perform a Sweep would raise his weapon up and to his right at an approximately 45 degree angle.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze could mimic the Seekers, and performed his own Sweep attack. He used two varieties, a short-ranged and long-ranged one, with the latter reaching more enemies in a single swing. When in Rome during the events in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio cannot execute the Sweep attack anymore. Instead he does a variant of it which involves swinging the spear/halberd in a wide circle at neck height, slitting the throats of any enemy NPCs within the radius.

Seekers could also throw sand at their enemies, blinding them momentarily and opening them up for an attack. Similarly to the Sweep, this could be evaded, but not countered.

Weaponry
Trivia
Special seekers
*During the final fight with Rodrigo Borgia in the Capella Sistina, he attacks and defends much like a Seeker, though he has far more health. He may even use the Sweep attack characteristic to Seekers.
*The Farmer, a lieutenant of Girolamo Savonarola during the Bonfire of the Vanities, carries a pitchfork and fights like a Seeker.
*Certain Papal Guards from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood fight and are armed similarly to Seekers.

Appearance
*Seekers are much more common in Brotherhood than in Assassin's Creed II, with many leading patrol groups.
*In the mission "Infrequent Flier," in the cutscene where Ezio abandons a burning Flying Machine, you can see a Seeker and a Brute on the roof of the Palazzo Ducale. Strangely, these are the only two guards that cannot free-run or climb.

Combat
*A disarmed Seeker has roughly the same mobility as an Agile guard.
*When trying to escape a battle, Seekers will not be the only guards to search nearby hiding spots; all guards will search for you until you have become anonymous again.
*In Assassin's Creed II, if engaged in a fight with several other guards and a disarmed Seeker, the Seeker will (very rarely) grab Ezio from behind and hold him to allow the others to attack. In Brotherhood, this can be performed by any guard.
*In Brotherhood, unlike in Assassin's Creed II, Seekers cannot be counter killed with a heavy weapon.
*In Assassin's Creed II, if you dodge a seeker's Sweep attack, Ezio will use his bracer to break the spear, and force the seeker use one of the Improvised weapons.

Brutes were heavily-armored guards in the Renaissance. They were essentially human tanks, wearing durable armor and carrying large, heavy weapons. They were one of the strongest guards, however, they moved very slowly due to the weight of their equipment.

The Brutes in Rome bore different, more elaborate armor, though they were now comparable in terms of skill to the Papal Guards.

Combat
Brutes were tricky enemies to defeat, due to the power behind each of their attacks; some of which could not be blocked or countered.

Normal attacks
Normal attacks of Brutes could be blocked with any weapon, however they could not be countered with a short blade or any sheath-able weapon.

A counter could only been performed with another heavy weapon, such as those the Brutes themselves carried, a long weapon, often carried by Seekers, or by a Hidden Blade. The successful timing chance for the last, however, was notoriously small, as one was given only a fraction of a second to react.

The normal attacks of Brutes could also be countered through a disarm, which left them open to a lethal, follow-up attack. The timing for the disarm was short, albeit slightly longer than that of the hidden blade counter.

Additionally, like all other enemies, Brutes were most easily dispatched by being assassinated either from above, or while undetected; with either the hidden blades, or a ranged weapon, such as the Hidden Gun or crossbow.

Special attacks
Neither of the Brute's special attacks could be blocked or countered, and could only be avoided by striking preemptively, or by dodging. There were two variants of a Brute's special attacks.

Smash
A Brute would perform a Smash by raising his weapon overhead, and taking a strong downward swing; knocking his target onto his back, and doing about as much damage as a normal attack.

The Smash special attack took less time for a Brute to prepare (approximately one second), in comparison to a Disarm Smash.

Disarm Smash
More forceful than an empty-handed disarm, a Brute performed a Disarm Smash by holding his weapon out behind him, then swinging it from right to left, breaking through an opponent's guard, and often knocking away his weapon.

The attack essentially did no damage, but as mentioned, it opened an enemy up to attacks from other foes in the fight.
Heavy Weapon Throw
In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio can equip heavy weapons with a heavy weapon sheath bought from a tailor. By holding down the attack button with a heavy weapon equipped, Ezio will hold the weapon above and behind his head. When the attack button is released Ezio will fling the weapon in a two-handed overhead throw where the blade will cleave into the head of any NPC directly in front of Ezio. Otherwise it will continue flying through the air until it hits an obstacle or hill terrain. If an enemy NPC is locked Ezio will fling the weapon in his direction. Doing so will empty your primary weapon slot in the weapons wheel until you purchase/re-equip another weapon or retrieve the heavy weapon from the head of the target. While in open combat, Ezio can only execute this special attack and cannot execute the Smash or Disarm Smash from Assassin's Creed 2. In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Brutes and Papal Guards equipped with a heavy weapon can only perform the Smash attack. Executing the Heavy Weapon Throw special attack successfully to an enemy NPC causes the moral of other witnessing enemies to drop considerably, often causing lower ranking enemies to flee.

Characteristics
Brutes were not highly intelligent and could be escaped once out of sight by blending, or hiding. They were also neither agile nor quick, and could not free-run or climb. Thus, taking to the rooftops was an easy method of escape.

Certain Brutes appeared to have a black-brown finish or trim on their armor plating, marking them as higher-ranked Brutes that were more resistant to enemy attacks.

Additionally, Brutes rarely ran from a fight, even if forced to face an opponent alone; unless they were disarmed. Inversely, killing a Brute caused the other guards accompanying him (particularly those with lower ranks) to flee.

Special Brutes
*Dante Moro carried a Labrys axe, and fought like a Brute; though with an immunity to being disarmed (unless through the Disarm Smash).
*Bartolomeo d'Alviano behaved like a Brute in combat, and carried what appeared to be a Bastard Sword (although the design and coloring of the handle differed from those carried by Brutes), which he fondly called "Bianca."
*Francesco Salviati carried a Bearded Axe with him when in his villa and fought like a Brute.
*Mercenaries also fought like Brutes, and carried similar weapons.
*The Templar Spy from during Ezio's trip to Spain used the model of a Brute.
*Some Papal Guards, when equipped with a heavy weapon, would fight like Brutes.
*Auguste Oberlin (the Blacksmith) fought like a Brute, and carried either a Bearded Axe (when he faced Ezio Auditore), or a large hammer.

Trivia
*Ezio uses certain taunts that are specific to Brutes, usually insulting their weight.
**Among them are: "Can you even hear me in there metal man!?", "Well you're certainly well-fed!", "That looks heavy!", "Fatti sotto, porco! (Come on, pig!)", and "Ehi, grassone! (Hey, fatty!)"
*In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Brutes are rarer, and harder to disarm than in Assassin's Creed II.
*In the mission "Infrequent Flier," during the cutscene where Ezio abandons a burning Flying Machine, you can see a Brute and a Seeker on the roof of the Palazzo Ducale. Strangely, these are the only two guards that cannot Free-Run or climb.
*When using the throwing knife special attack, Brutes can be killed with one knife, despite their armor.
*In Assassin's Creed II: Discovery, Guard Captains possess the same appearance as Brutes, and are armed with Bastard Swords. However, unlike Brutes, they are extremely fast.
Normal attacks of Brutes could be blocked with any weapon, however they could not be countered with a short blade or any sheath-able weapon. To kill a Brute easily with a sheath-able weapon allow him to execute a normal attack on you where you block it. As soon as you (Ezio) block the attack, immediately attack the Brute back. Almost every time this results with a hit to the flesh where an instant kill animation can be executed if you hit the "attack" button again. Because the Brute's recovery time after a normal attack is very long you can easily execute this form of counterattack because you are faster than they can recover. This tactic however does not work if the Brute is going to do a Smash or Disarm Smash special attack. In which case dodge the Smash or move away from him so he can't disarm when executing a Disarm Smash. This method is only useful in Assassin's Creed 2.

To kill a Seeker easily with a sheath-able weapon allow him to execute a normal attack on you where you block it. As soon as you (Ezio) block the attack, immediately attack the Seeker back. A reasonable amount of times this results with a hit to the flesh where an instant kill animation can be executed if you hit the "attack" button again. The only way this can fail is if the Seeker is lucky and just managed to recover from his attack in time to block your attack or you are too far away from the Seeker because his attack somewhat pushes you away from him if you are very close to him when you block. Because the Seeker's recovery time after a normal attack is long, but shorter than a Brute's, you can successfully execute this form of counterattack because you are often faster than they can recover. This tactic however does not work if the Seeker is going to do a Sweep attack. This method is only useful in Assassin's Creed 2.

Seekers could also throw sand at their enemies, blinding them momentarily and opening them up for an attack. Similarly to the Sweep, this could be evaded, but not countered.

ac2

Brutes were heavily-armored guards in the Renaissance. They were essentially human tanks, wearing durable armor and carrying large, heavy weapons. They were one of the strongest guards, however, they moved very slowly due to the weight of their equipment.

The Brutes in Rome bore different, more elaborate armor, though they were now comparable in terms of skill to the Papal Guards.

Combat
Brutes were tricky enemies to defeat, due to the power behind each of their attacks; some of which could not be blocked or countered.

tyNormal attacks

However, unlike Brutes, they are extremely fast.

ac2

This tactic however does not work if the Brute is going to do a Smash or Smash Disarm special attack. In which case dodge the Smash or move away from him so he can't disarm when executing a Smash Disarm.
