Scholars were "holy men" who were usually wandering around the cities in small groups during the Third Crusade, deep in prayer. In Jerusalem and Damascus they were Muslim ascetics and wore turbans. In Acre they were Christian monks and wore hoods.

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad took advantage of the similarities between the Assassin robes and the scholars' garb to confuse guards. He could also encourage the appearance of additional groups of scholars in and around cities by saving male citizens in distress.

Functions
If Altaïr blended with the scholars, they would walk in a diamond formation around him. This shielded Altaïr being seen from all directions, and like this the scholars could assist Altaïr in two different ways.

Each of the three large cities' entrances and some paths to restricted areas within them were blocked by a phalanx of guards, who would push Altaïr away if he tried to enter. Scholars were usually situated near them, allowing Altaïr to easily enter the restricted area without alarming anyone and starting a fight by joining them. The reason for this was that guards allowed scholars to pass by unchallenged, granting Altaïr easy access without climbing buildings or fighting.

If Altaïr was being chased by guards and managed to break their line of sight, he could blend in with the scholars and trick the guards into thinking he had disappeared. To do this, Altaïr moved to the center of the group and began walking with them, lowering his head and clasping his hands to appear as if he was praying.

If Altaïr was outside the guards' line of sight when he began blending with the scholars, the guards would give up on the chase after a few moments. However, if Altaïr could still be seen by the guards and he attempted to approach a group of scholars, they would stop their prayers and flee in terror, breaking their formation.

History
In 1190, Altaïr disguised himself as a scholar in order to enter the Crusader camp that besieged Acre.

The Saracen leader Salah Al'din had encouraged scholars to visit and spend time in the cities of Damascus and Jerusalem, which was presumably why the city guards always allowed them, and by extension Altaïr, to pass through the city gates unhindered.

Sibrand, leader of the Knights Teutonic as well as a member of the Templars, caught onto Altaïr's method of blending in with the scholars and publicly maltreated and murdered a Christian scholar, accusing the man of working with the Assassins. The scholar's body was then dumped into the sea.

While in Cyprus, Altaïr was unable to blend in several areas without any scholars, such as Limassol, Kantara Castle, Buffavento Castle, Saint Hilarion Castle and the Archive, as the presence of a lone "scholar" caused suspicion.

Monks could occasionally be found wandering the streets and countrysides in Italy, such as within the Monte Oliveto Maggiore monastery. Although Ezio Auditore da Firenze was able to blend with any crowd, an incident reminiscent of scholars occurred during the Bonfire of the Vanities, wherein he blended with a group of monks to pass through a guarded city gate.

Trivia
*An achievement could be obtained by blending with scholars 20 times.
*Altaïr could not normally kill scholars using any weapons; however, throwing them into water would cause them to drown.

Vigilantes were groups of men that aided the Assassins by distracting or grabbing guards pursuing them.

They were often recruited by saving certain citizens, or by reclaiming a Roman district from the Borgia.

History
Middle Ages
Vigilante groups were usually made up of the friends or family members of female citizens, who had been rescued from harassing guards by Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. The rescued citizen would often thank the Assassin, and assure him that their husband, friends or neighbours would be sure to hear of his kind deed. Subsequently, if Altair was being pursued by guards or chasing an assassination target, the vigilantes would grab them by the arm and prevent them from moving. This allowed the Assassin to either make his escape, dispose of his pursuers or assassinate his target.

Should Altaïr pass by the group of vigilantes when not being pursued, they would greet him, and say such things as "Thank you for saving my daughter," or "If you need me, I am here."

Renaissance
During Ezio Auditore's attempts to retake Rome, several vigilantes began to support his actions. After he destroyed Borgia Towers, small groups of vigilantes would gather in the district, shouting insults at nearby guards, and ready to aid Ezio at any time.

Aside from directly assaulting the guards, they could also hide him from them. After successfully helping Ezio against an attack, they would disperse from the area, and only gather again at a later time.

Though vigilantes did not address Ezio should he walk past, they would often speak complaints against the Borgia, and praise for the Assassins.

In Constantinople, when Ezio stirred a riot at the Harbor of Theodosius, several vigilantes chose to fight against the Janissaries. Though unarmed, or wielding only pitch forks, many risked their lives to protest the tyranny of the guards.

Once the rioters had broken through the gate and into the Arsenal itself, Vigilantes could be seen fighting both the Elite soldiers and Janissaries inside.

Colonial America
During the American Revolutionary War, vigilantes would assist Haytham Kenway and Ratonhnhaké:ton. Liberating regions from the Templar influence prompted them to gather around certain areas. Like in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, they would shout insults at the nearby guards.

The vigilantes would not only grab and stop attacking soldiers directly, but hide Haytham and Connor, by allowing them to blend with the group. If they were attacked, it would cause them to disperse, but following an attack they would quickly move back to their original area.

Along with ordinary vigilantes, rioters have also appeared in the cities, gathering the surrounding citizens to cause a commotion. This would distract soldiers away from certain areas and allow Connor to slip by. These rioters could also be provoked by Assassin recruits.

During the Boston Massacre, the rioters gathered and began shouting at the British soldiers because of their unfair treatment. This drew away all the guards' attention in the district, as most were busy with keeping order. Eventually though, the soldiers began shooting upon the civilians and killing them.

Later, Stephane Chapheau went on a riot through Boston in his irritation at the British before he joined the Assassins. Through this, he gathered a lot of attention of British soldiers in the district, as well as provoked other civilians to riot as well.

Trivia
*A guard held by a vigilante could not move or defend himself, allowing Altaïr or Ezio to easily kill or shake the pursuers.
*Vigilantes could hold guards for around five seconds before the guard broke free, although it was possible for the guard to be grabbed again immediately afterward.
*Any guard, regardless of health or type, could be grappled by vigilantes. Even some assassination targets were vulnerable to them.
*If all of the pursuers were killed with the assistance of vigilantes, the group would disperse, and could not be used again until the area was revisited.
Talal (c. 1157 - 1191) was a slaver and a member of the Templar Order. He was one of nine men killed by the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad on his quest for redemption, upon the order of Al Mualim, the Mentor of the Levantine Assassins during the Third Crusade. He was located in the rich district of Jerusalem where he had based his slave trading business.

Biography
The slaver of Jerusalem
A former member of the Saracen army, Talal returned to the holy city of Jerusalem, where he established a bandit gang made up of men whose loyalty to him was unquestioned. Operating out of an old warehouse, they soon became known for kidnapping men, women and children of all social stations and shipping them off to distant lands to be sold as slaves. Although the city guard was well aware of Talal's actions, they turned a blind eye in return for regular bribes from the bandits.

A master athlete, Talal's skill with the bow and the sword were legendary. He had no problem fighting his enemies personally and took every opportunity to boast of his talents to anyone who would listen. Furthermore, he justified his involvement with the slave trade by noting that many of his captives were poor beggars, prostitutes and criminals, who he claimed would lead much better lives if they were given work and discipline.

Death
Altaïr investigated Talal's movements within the rich district and discovered him to be within his slave warehouse. As soon as the Assassin entered the warehouse, Talal began taunting him.

He then situated his men to surround Altaïr, boasting that he had led the Assassin there. The Templar then ordered his men to kill the distressed man, and his orders were followed without question. Talal watched the fight, looking on in anticipation for the guards to defeat Altaïr. However, the Assassin overpowered the guards and defeated them, much to Talal's shock and horror.

Realising that the situation was not in his favour, Talal fled from his slave complex through a trapdoor in the ceiling. Altaïr immediately gave chase to his fleeing target, and pursued him in a long, agile chase across the rooftops and through the streets of Jerusalem.

Talal often looked over his shoulder during the chase and tried to convince his pursuer into sparing him, which fell on deaf ears. As Talal turned around and prepared an arrow for his bow, Altaïr quickly closed the gap between them, and stabbed him with his Hidden Blade.

With his dying words, Talal remarked that the people he had been selling were the most unfortunate people in Jerusalem, not good as slaves, and that rather than profiting from them, he had been trying to help them. He also remarked that he no longer believed in anything after death and that the people he had "rescued" had abandoned their beliefs as long as he had. Unable to speak anymore, Talal expired in Altaïr's arms.

Personality and characteristics
Talal was not a man of high morals, locking up men and women against their will. He claimed and thought he did the right thing, stating the people he imprisoned to be mere beggars, whores, addicts and lepers who he was trying to save. He knew that his death would not get in the way of his Templar brothers' goals.

Like his fellow Templars, he had lost faith in God, claiming that not only he had been abandoned, but the people he took into his care as well, and he believed to be saving them. He was somewhat arrogant as well, believing that Altaïr would fail to defeat his men and even taunting Altaïr beforehand.

Talal usually carried a bow on his back, along with a quiver full of arrows. He also wore a sword sheathed in its scabbard, though he was more experienced with a bow and arrow. He wore a dark gray tunic with yellow stripes and plain white leggings. Talal also wore two vambraces on each wrist and had a large belt around him. He also had a goatee and had his hair braided flat against the back of his head. He was of average height and stature.

Trivia
*Talal was featured in the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2007 gameplay trailer, where Altaïr infiltrated the slave trader's den, before chasing and killing Talal.
*Talal was one of the assassination targets that could be stopped by vigilantes while escaping, the others being Sibrand, Abu'l Nuqoud and Jubair al Hakim.
*Talal's guards were still found in Jerusalem after his death.
*Talal is an Arabic name meaning "admirable" and "nice".
Masun was a resident and preacher of the village of Masyaf.

Biography
In 1191, Masun and an Assassin, Jamal, defected to the Templar cause. When the Templars arrived at Masyaf the same year, after pursuing Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad from Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, Masun opened the gates for them and allowed them to lay siege to the village, causing the deaths of Assassins and citizens alike.

Soon after the attack on Masyaf, Altaïr discovered Masun's treachery through a letter that he had pickpocketed from the village's basket weaver. Upon interrogating Masun in a secluded area, the man revealed his allegiance to the Templars, to which Altaïr brought the traitor back to Al Mualim. There, Masun was given a final chance to repent, though the man remained defiant, and ultimately, the Mentor had no choice but to execute him by burying his sword in Masun's neck up to the hilt.

Personality and characteristics
Masun appeared to be quite fervant at first sight, claiming that the Templars' goal was noble and that everyone should serve them. He was also quite persuasive, as he was able to advocate that Al Mualim was a bane on the village of Masyaf through his preaching skills, and had a streak of defiant loyalty, believing what he thought was right until his death.

Trivia
*The name Maṣūn (مصون) means "well-protected" or "safeguarded" in Arabic.
**Ironically, the news of Masun's treachery was easy to discover, as it required only a letter to find out about, as opposed to the lengthier investigations that Altaïr had to perform for his later targets.
*Masun was the only person that Altaïr did not kill after an interrogation, as all of the others were executed with the Hidden Blade shortly after the Assassin had extracted the information he required.
*Masun possessed the same appearance as other Templar heralds that were interrogated by Altaïr in Jerusalem and Damascus.
*Masun's apprehension and execution was not detailed in the Assassin's Creed: The Secret Crusade novel, as Altaïr traveled directly to Damascus for Tamir's assassination.
Majd Addin (unknown – 1191) was a Saracen, the regent of Jerusalem, and a member of the Templar Order. He was the sixth individual to be assassinated by the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, and like his Templar brothers, his death was planned by Al Mualim. Majd Addin was located in Jerusalem's Poor District.

Biography
Rise to power
Majd Addin was once a simple scribe. At some point in his life, not only did he become a member of the Templar Order, but he also became aware of an Apple of Eden and its capabilities; Addin and nine other individuals closely guarded its secrets and intended to use the Apple to create a new world.

Due to his membership of the Order, and the absence of the Sultan Salāḥ ad-Dīn, Majd Addin was able to take control of Jerusalem. Addin believed that everyone should view the world in his way, and those that did not oblige to this were sentenced to death. He used fear and intimidation to keep the population of Jerusalem in check, often issuing strict and confusing edicts regarding the way people should conduct themselves. This way, he was slowly reversing Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn's long-standing policy of tolerance toward all races, religions, and creeds.

Mock trials were often held for those he perceived to be enemies of the city. In these, he would either frame them or exaggerate their crimes, in order to make sure the trials would always result in death, as well as the public's disapproval of the sentenced – this caused the people of Jerusalem to call the trials "executions" instead. Through these executions, Addin silenced anyone who would oppose him, and struck fear into the hearts of any who considered an uprising.

He was known to speak with an authoritative edge and insisted that he knew what was best for the people of Jerusalem. However, Majd was a cruel man and his citizens knew he could not be trusted.

Death
Altaïr traveled to Jerusalem's Poor District, where he started his investigation of Majd Addin. He soon discovered that there was to be another execution, and that a group of citizens were planning to stand up against Majd Addin in order to save the son of their leader.

During the public execution, Majd judged an alleged prostitute, a thief, a gambler and a heretic. The heretic was in fact an Assassin, and Malik Al-Sayf had tasked Altaïr with killing Majd before the Assassin was executed. The citizens who had planned to stand up to Majd tried in vain to stop the execution, but they were quickly killed by archers and other guards.

Majd began his speech about the prostitute, declaring that she had sold her body to several men. She defended herself by stating that she was only there because she had refused to lie with Addin. He then killed the woman, saying that even when she was only moments from her death, she still continued to lie.

The second victim was the gambler, who remarked that he had only played a game of chance. Majd told him that it was not sin that corrupted the city, but the gambler. Majd then killed him and moved on to his next victim.

The third victim was being accused of stealing the gain of others. To acquire support from the public, Majd convinced the crowd that everyone had been violated by his actions. The man tried to defend himself, saying that he had picked only one dinar which had fallen to the floor. However, Majd Addin rebuked that the crime would rise and begin to affect others more directly, after which he killed the man.

Before Majd could move on to the Assassin, Altaïr made his way to the stage and stabbed Majd with his Hidden Blade, allowing Malik's other Assassins to save their imprisoned brother.

During Majd's dying moments, he told Altaïr the reason for his evil deeds, commenting that, while he joined the Templars to help them take control of Jerusalem, in fact, he simply wanted the power and fear such a position granted. He stated his belief that Altair would have done the same, which was denied as the Assassin knew what happened to such people. When Majd asked what it was, Altair responded by stabbing him again with his Hidden Blade. Afterwards, Altaïr smeared the feather he had brought with Addin's blood, and reported back to the Assassins' Bureau.

Majd Addin was later buried in a cemetery in Jerusalem, where both Saracen and Crusader soldiers joined together to pay their respects. Altaïr was also present, as he had discovered that his next target, Robert de Sable, would also be present. However, the funeral turned out to be an ambush as Robert had not planned to attend, knowing that the Assassin would strike, so he sent a decoy instead.

Personality and characteristics
Fear and intimidation get him what he wants.

Majd Addin was a power-hungry individual who thrived off of the fear that people had for him. It was this lust for power that led him to become a member of the Knights Templar, who offered him what he desired in exchange for his allegiance.

Addin often conducted executions because he felt that determining another man's fate gave him a god-like status. A very proficient speaker, Majd Addin could manipulate the crowd with his words, often making them blindly believe that the executions he carried out were for the good of the city.

Dying, Majd Addin did not claim that what he did was right, instead confessing that he did it not to help his brethren, but because he enjoyed it, as well as to gain power and fame, which he accomplished over time. However, this led to his downfall as he had allowed these factors to corrupt him.

Trivia
*Majd Addin ("glory of the faith") may be very loosely based on a man named Baha ad-Din ibn Shaddad ("splendor of the faith"), who was close to Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn and wrote a biography on the great Saracen military leader and sultan.
*In one of Altaïr's investigations, it was revealed that Majd Addin was once the scribe of the emir, wherein Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn was the Emir or Sultan at this time.
*Malik told Altaïr that Majd Addin had "declared himself Regent in Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn's absence." However, when eavesdropping on some civilians – particularly the father of one of those to be executed – it becomes clear that the people were under the impression that Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn himself had appointed Majd Addin as Regent.
*If allowed, Majd Addin would execute the Assassin in a far more brutal manner than what he would do to the other three. He would execute the first two with a simple slash of his sword, and impale the third, but when he got to the Assassin, Addin would impale him and then shift the blade around inside his body.
**If the other Assassin was executed, Altaïr would slowly lose synchronization bars until he assassinated Majd Addin, or desynchronized.
*Majd Addin was one of only four targets who required multiple stabs of the Hidden Blade to die – once during gameplay, and another in the Memory Corridor. The other three were Checco Orsi in Assassin's Creed II, Shahkulu in Assassin's Creed: Revelations and Edward Braddock in Assassin's Creed III.
*In the mobile game adaptation of Assassin's Creed, he was called "Maj Aldin."

Despite this, he was cowardly, and would flee if the odds were against him.

However, the Assassin overpowered the guards and defeated them.

Recognizing the danger he was in, Talal fled from his slave complex through a trapdoor in the ceiling. Altaïr immediately gave chase to his fleeing target, and pursued him in a long, agile chase across the rooftops and through the streets of Jerusalem.

Talal often looked over his shoulder during the chase and tried to convince his pursuer into sparing him.

Unable to speak anymore, Talal died in Altaïr's arms.

Ironic, given his occupation and deeds.
