Stub
The Armor of Brutus is an unbreakable set of armor available in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The armor was the greatest possession of a mysterious cult, the Followers of Romulus. The armor is unlocked by obtaining all Romulus scrolls and keys from the six secret lairs throughout the city of Rome.

It is the strongest armor in game and is found alongside the Dagger of Brutus. Like the Armor of Altaïr, the Armor of Brutus has 25 health diamonds and cannot be dyed.

Appearance
The armor looks much bulkier than Ezio's Master Assassin robes due to the fur pauldron that is padded along the shoulders. The fur is mostly likely in tribute to Romulus, and is thus most likely wolf fur. There is a silver eagle on the right shoulder that holds the cape up. There is also a silver eagle on the waist area where the Assassin symbol would normally be, which has been relocated to being painted right above.

The armor comes with a grey, short-sleeved robe that is worn underneath the breastplate. The bottom of the robes are in three layers, each one on top of the other, and come down to Ezio's knees. However, the bottoms act almost like a kilt, completely covering the legs, whereas the Master Assassin robes part at the sides to keep movement unencumbered. This does not affect mobility in the game, however.

The armor set consists of both metal and leather. The chest armor and spaulders are mostly metal, while the vambraces and greaves are completely leather. The vambraces and greaves are also very plain looking pieces of armor, having very little design compared to the rest of the armor. Unlike the vambraces bought in the game, the Vambraces of Brutus cover both of Ezio's forearms instead of only his right. The hood and cape, which seem to be connected, are colored red with a golden trim on the cape.

Trivia
*The eagle-motifs of the armor, the beak-shaped appearance of the hood, and the Assassin insignia on the armor's back strongly implies that Marcus Junius Brutus, the original owner of the armor, was a member of the Assassin's Order.
*The Armor of Brutus gives the same amount of health to Ezio as the Seusenhofer armor set. The only difference between these two sets is that the Armor of Brutus is unbreakable, and the Seusenhofer armor allows Ezio to wear his regular, customizable robes.
*It appears that with the Armor of Brutus on, your metal cestus, if you've obtained it from Leonardo, will disappear.

Guards are the common opponents to an assassin throughout the Assassin's Creed series.

Assassin's Creed
Hashshashin!
During the course of Assassin's Creed, there are two types of guards: Soldiers and Archers. The archers are mostly the same, but there are three ranks of soldiers. All guards are armed with swords (with varying styles).
*The ordinary soldiers don't wear helmets (Muslims wear turbans) and are only equipped with leather armor or light Lamellar armor. Guard archers are on par with ordinary ones except they are only found on rooftops, wear a hood, and use bows for a ranged attack.
*Guard Sergeants (or elite guards) have helmets, the Crusader variant wear chain mail with a tunic, and Mujahideen Sergeants posess medium Lamellar armor.
*Guard Captains are the most powerful guard besides the Templar Knight. The Muslim Captains wear Baidah helmets and heavy Lamellar armor where Crusader captains are equipped with chain mail and varying knight helms.
*Templar Knights are a special version of guard where only 60 are found in game. They are similar to the Crusader guard captain except with higher stats and the fact that they only wear one version of helmet which appears bloodstained. They will also provoke a fight when they see Altair, no matters what his notoriety level is. Strangely enough, Templar Knights can be found in many places, including Muslim cities.

All Muslim guards speak Arabic, ordinary Crusader soldiers and archers speak English, Crusader Captains and Sergeants speak French or German, and the Templars speak all of the dialects (but only speak Arabic in Altair's fight against Robert's imposter).

The guards in Masyaf, despite being marked as an ally via Eagle Vision, function exactly like normal ones. They are equipped in robes similar to Altair's, but they only have a sword and their skirts are shorter. They have all five fingers, indicating that, though members of the order, they are not assassins themselves, instead serving as guardians.

Assassin's Creed II
Assassino!

In Assassin's Creed II, there are five types of enemy guards:

Regular Guards
Those are the "standard" type of guard which can be found almost everywhere on the ground. However, they use a large variety of swords along with maces and war hammers. Those regular troops are' divided into three ranks themselves: Militia, Elite and Leaders.
*Thugs are people hired by Vieri de' Pazzi to attack Ezio. While not officially or technically guards, they function in a remarkably similar manner. They will attack Ezio even if he is Incognito, and fight only with fists. After assassinating Uberto Alberti, they can no longer be found in game, except for the Courier mission Casanova.

:
*Militia is the weakest rank. They wear no armor, and can be easily killed (with one counter-kill). They are also the most easily frightened during combat as after battles they are the first ones to retreat.

:

:

*
*:Elite guards are stronger, wear a moderate amount of armor, and need three counter-kills to be defeated. Elites are also more courageous than Militias although if you kill the leader they still retreat.

:

:

*Leaders are the best fighters and most tenacious of all the regular soldiers. They wear slightly more armor that their Elite counterpart. The Leaders will last slightly longer than Elites during Ezio's counter-attacks. They also hardly give up their weapons, making them harder to disarm than the others. Also like Brute guards can not be grabed easily.

The Regular Guards are not especially agile, but can climb up to the rooftops in order to follow Ezio (while not as fast as him). Also, they can recognize Ezio sitting on a bench, but can be assassinated before they recognize him and spread word of his presence.

Seekers
The Seekers, also called "Paranoid" are one of the new special guard types. They are constantly looking in hiding spots (such as the haystacks, benches, and crowds) and checking them (although Ezio can assassinate the seeker from his hiding spot if that happens). They are armed with long spears or halberds, giving them an increased reach in combat. Seekers, like most of the other guards, wear armor. The armor they wear is slightly more than a Leader-ranked Standard, but less than a Brute. When unarmed they will occasionally approach Ezio from behind and then hold him while the other guards assault him. Disarming the Seeker will give you an advantage as you can effectlively use his own weapon against him.

Agiles
One of the new guard archetypes is the Agile, which, as the name suggests, are a very fast, light-armored enemy. They run faster than Ezio and also have the Free Run ability which can lead to chase sequences. They wield small weapons such as daggers and other short blades. Agiles are extremley good at dodging your attacks, one way to kill an Agile is by tiring him out, you can do this by constantly attacking and dodging his moves, however, simply countering an attack performed by the Agile would be solid enough for a kill.

Brutes
The Brutes are heavily armored and equipped (two-handed weapons such as heavy swords and axes). Their armor covers almost every part of their bodies, making them tough to bring down, but also making them cumbersome and slow. They are not very intelligent, and won't be able to tell Ezio from anyone else in a crowd. When deflecting a short weapon, they will not take damage (while all other guards do), but can still be damaged with a short weapon. A good way to make short work of them is to disarm them and counterattack, because they are very easy to disarm. Brutes have two types of attack: one quick, and one that begins with a wind-up. The latter attack cannot be countered, and must be dodged, while the former can be countered. You must possess a Brute's weapon to counter the wind-up attacks of another Brute. Also the Brutes are the only type of enemy that won't flee a battle, they will only run away if you disarm their weapon and if they can't find another one. Your best bet in taking out a Brute is by assassination. When facing multiple guards who are unaware of your presence, killing the brute first is a good idea unless you want to be stuck in a long fight.

Archers
The Archers are guards that patrol and defend the rooftops. They are armed with bows and swords (sometimes maces or war hammers instead of swords), and warn Ezio on sight to leave the place, no matter the notoriety. Approaching them will force them to draw their weapon out and commence a fight. Archers are seemingly just Militia-ranked Standards with the capability of attacking at a distance with their trusty longbows. While Florentine and Tuscan Archers can be killed with a single Throwing Knife, archers in the other cities and regions (such as Venice and Romagna) will need two Throwing Knives to be taken down. Since they are almost always on the rooftops on buildings, Archers are fairly easy to dispatch in melee combat as they have the skill and hardiness of a Militia-ranked standard, making them easy to kill. Another good way to dispatch them is to simply throw them off the roof, which will instantly kill the Archer if they fall more than two stories or if they land in water.

Coloring
The coloring of the guards uniforms can identify who they serve in the game whether it be a city or a person.

*Red caps and sleeves means they serve the Pazzi family (these guards disappear after sequence 5).

*Dark red caps and black sleeves with red going down the side means they serve Borgia (these guards usually guard codex pages and appear whenever you encounter Borgia out of Rome).

*Dark yellow caps and sleeves with black armor plates means they serve the Medici (they first appear helping you fight the Pazzi during sequence 4).

*Green caps and sleeves means they serve the city of Forli (they help you in sequence 12).

*Blue caps and sleeves with gold armor plates means they serve the city of Venice (they have much better armor than any guards in Italy).

*Black caps, sleeves, and armor plates means they serve Savonarola (they only appear in sequence 13, are as heavily protected as Venetian guards, and can be seen fighting Borgia guards throughout the city).

*Pink and orange caps and sleeves means that they serve Rome (they can only be seen in sequence 14 in Rome, they are the most heavily protected guards in the game).

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Arquebusiers
The Arquebusiers were firearm-wielding soldiers who served and protected the pontiff during their tenure.

In 1499, armored arquebusiers under the command of Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI, participated in the assault on Monteriggioni; one arquebusier managed to wound Ezio Auditore da Firenze during the latter stages of the assault.[1]. In 1503, the arquebusier continued to serve under Cesare, keeping watch over a Papal parade in Rome. At least one arquebusier spotted an approaching Ezio Auditore, but was killed by another assassin before firing his shot.

Papal Guards
The Papal Guard were elite soldiers commanded by the Papacy to serve and protect the pontiff during his tenure. The armor worn by these guards seemed largely ceremonial in design, although it seemed to serve its purpose well enough,it was unable to stop the blade of an assassin.

By 1503, the Papal Guard protected Pope Alexander VI, and were commanded by the Pope's son &ndash; Cesare Borgia. During that year, several guards were forced to confront several assassins, including Ezio Auditore da Firenze, who had attacked the Papal parade in Rome.

Trivia
* The Militia Guards resemble the Swiss Guard in appearance because they have similar caps ,swords and similar clothes but different colours.
* The amount of counter attacks needed to kill a guard does not affect counter kills with heavy weapons, long weapons or the hidden blade, the guard being countered with these weapons is unable to block or parry.
* In Assassin's Creed II the taunts Ezio says to brutes are different then the taunts he says to the other guards, for example one thing he says only to brutes are "Well, you're certainty well fed!"
* Strangely, in the mission "Play Along" Ezio assassinates an Agile so he can disguise himself as a guard but instead of having an Agile's outfit he wears the outfit of a Leader guard.

Altaïr acquires this sword from a wounded guard early in the game and keeps it through the entire story.

Assassin's Creed
Altaïr starts the game with the Syrian sword, with which he is very skilled with until Al Mualim demotes him to Novice for breaking all three tenets of The Creed and decreases his abilities greatly. During his progression back into the ranks, he starts of with a sword that looks like this but does not have a cross guard - it only has a similar handle and blade. After he assassinates four targets he gets the Sword of Altaïr. He uses this sword before he is given the Syrian sword back.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
Altaïr still possesses his sword during the events after Assassin's Creed Bloodlines. In fact, the sword(s) can be found hung in Kantara Castle Great Hall ('The Bull' stage), as ornaments. During the game this is the only sword that can be used. In the beginning it's attack power is quite low and enemies have to be hit with it for multiple times to be killed. The sword and other weapons of Altaïr however can be upgraded by collecting Templar coins and then used to purchase upgrades.

Assassin's Creed II
Altaïr's sword is available in the Monteriggioni blacksmith for 50,000ƒ (or less if it had been renovated) after DNA Sequence 8. This sword is the most powerful melee weapon in the game, as all three stats are maxed out. It is interesting to note that the picture of the weapon's hilt in the blacksmith has a leather-wrapped hilt, however the weapon does not have this leather wrapping.

Trivia
*It is unknown why the sword is available from the Monteriggioni blacksmith since the sword (being Altaïr's personal weapon) should be more likely available once his armor was unlocked, however, a possible cause is that the sword could have been lost along with the Codex, found, and later sold off to the blacksmith.
*The sword in the game is shorter compared to the other longswords Ezio can use; the entire sword being only a little longer than the length of his arm. However, Altaïr's sword is the strongest weapon available.
*Strangely, Altaïr's sword is considered the best sword in the second game; in Assassin's Creed, the Syrian sword was the best sword; however, it is possible that Altaïr modified the sword using the apple, similar to his armor. This is also made further possible as Altaïr uses this weapon in Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines as opposed to the Syrian Sword.
*It is interesting to note that in later memory sequences of Assassin's Creed II, if the player has the sword equipped, it is quite possible to be knocked away from Ezio by Brute guards.
*There is a glitch in the Xbox 360 and PS3 version which automatically replaces this sword with the "Common Sword" in Ezio's inventory. To fix this, you'll have to go to the weapon room in the Villa Auditore and equip Altaïr's sword again.
*Interestingly enough, in the second game, the Sword of Altaïr which is the second strongest weapon in the first game and the strongest in the second was placed in the same rack as the Old Syrian Sword which is the strongest weapon in the first game and second weakest in the second.
*Upon actual inspection, it is obvious that the sword is different then in the first game, which has a brown handle and this having a silver handle showing that it has been modified.
Exactly who they were, where they came from and when they disappeared is largely unknown. With early humans unable to comprehend the First Civilization for what they truly were, they were viewed upon as gods.

Knowledge
Though various religious beliefs seem to have been based on aspects and misinterpretations of Those Who Came Before, their existence was largely unknown to humanity. As early as the 12th Century, both the Assassins and the Knights Templar knew that the focus of human religions, the Gods, did not truly exist, and that miracles and other supernatural were simply manifestations of the powers of the Pieces of Eden; devices created by Those Who Came Before to control the Human race. However, it is unclear if the Assassins and Templars understood the origin of the Pieces at that time. By the 15th century, at least one Templar, Rodrigo Borgia, was aware of the existence, if not the nature, of Those Who Came Before; he mistakenly believed that The Vault underneath the Sistine Chapel housed a living God.

The first known instance of a human becoming aware of their existence following their disappearance was that of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, who made mention of them in his Codex. However, it would not be until the year 1499 that humanity would "meet" Those Who Came Before again; Ezio Auditore da Firenze, an Assassin, encountered a hologram of a being calling herself Minerva in The Vault. While Ezio likely told his fellow Assassins of Minerva, it is possible they still did not understand her true nature; Ezio showed great difficulty in understanding Minerva's explanation of her existence.

By 2012, the Templars in Abstergo Industries had a sizeable understanding of the true nature of Those Who Came Before. Whether they learned this information through the use of the Animus or had found evidence of it earlier is unknown. However, none of the Assassins seen in this time period indicated that they had previous knowledge of the existence of Those Who Came Before.

History
Creation of humanity
We built you in our own image, we built you to survive.

The origin of the First Civilization are unclear; Minerva simply stated that they "came before". They were however, responsible for the creation of humanity, creating them in their own image to be a docile workforce. Research by Subject 16 seemed to suggest that Those Who Came Before radically altered the genetic make-up of a pre-existing species on the planet to create humanity, leaving a sizeable gap in terms of transitional species between archaic hominids and modern humans. By 1997, the Templars had taken note of this and arranged for fake skeletons to be planted in Ethiopia, so as to limit human exposure to the possibility of the existence of Those Who Came Before.

Control of humanity was assured through use of the Pieces of Eden, which tapped into a neuro-transmitter located deep within the human brain. However, there were humans born without the neuro-transmitter, and could subsequently live without being influenced by the First Civilization through such means.

War
Eventually, despite humanity and the First Civilization living in peace for some time, war broke out. Possibly the result of at least two immune individuals stealing a Piece of Eden from their masters. The fate of these two &ndash; Adam and Eve &ndash; following their attempt is unknown, however humanity and Those Who Came Before soon found themselves at war with each other. While Those Who Came Before were more technologically advanced and powerful, humanity had the advantage of numbers.

Somehow, the Piece's of Eden had lost their ability to influence humanity, whether it be through deactivation or by natural immunity building up within the Human race, remains unknown.

Catastrophe
The war did eventually end, although with casualties greater than the First Civilization could have ever anticipated. The distraction of war had blinded them to all else, and their preoccupation prevented them from seeing the signs of an impending danger from the "heavens"; by the time they had noticed it, it was too late. Shaun Hastings and Lucy Stillman later hypothesized that this "danger" could have been a massive solar flare, that had flipped the Earth's weakening magnetic field, reversing the polarity and making the planet geologically unstable. This hypothesis was supported by evidence found by Subject 16;

*"Near the day of purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky. - Hopi"
*"A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans. - Hopi"
*"They died in the fire from the heavens."
*"75ka was not a volcano."

Aftermath
Both races survived the catastrophe, however, few of either species remained. Working together, they rebuilt their world, though humanity continued to view Minerva's kind as gods. Despite their survival, Those Who Came Before were unable to fully recover and began heading toward extinction. They knew however, that the catastrophe that had burned their world before would eventually reoccur and took steps to prevent it. Recording a holographic, yet interactive, message to serve as a warning to those who entered the Vault. In it, Minerva warned of the impending doom, and spoke of the Temples that could save Earth from destruction, built by those who "knew to turn away from war".

Delivering their message to the Assassin Desmond Miles, who was viewing the memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Minerva warned that time was short, and that "the Cross" would stand in their way. With the deliverance of that message, the last vestiges of the First Civilization died away, the gods had become extinct.

Characteristics
The First Civilization were a technologically advanced and powerful race, who seemed to possess precognitive abilities; either natural or technological. This was proven when Minerva told Ezio within the The Vault that he was simply a conduit and spoke directly to the invisible Desmond Miles, who was viewing his ancestor's memories. Furthermore, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad mentioned in the Codex that his Piece of Eden not only possessed a catalog of past events, but also future events, implying that the Pieces contain predictions made by Those Who Came Before.

Those Who Came Before also have connections with many of Earth's religions, and likely influenced their developments directly. During her warning to Desmond, Minerva made mention of her former names, as well of those of her; Menrva, Uni and Tinia, who were later became known as Minerva, Juno and Jupiter, respectively. The former names correspond to the Etruscan Triad of Deities, while the latter are the names of their Roman counterparts, who make up the Capitoline Triad. This shift in names may be indicative why various religions have numerous similarities, as they are all based on the story of Those Who Came Before.

Legacy
They're gifts, Mr. Miles. From those who came before.
Despite the mark they left behind on Earth, the First Civilization faded into obscurity rapidly after their decline; the inability of humans to comprehend their creators as anything but Gods did however allow their names at least, to live on. The lack of evidence for their existence did not prevent all humans from learning about them however, and by the 21st Century the Knights Templar had a limited understanding of the nature of those who had lived before. Indeed, the technology used to view the genetic memories of ones ancestor &ndash; the Animus &ndash; was based off technology utilised by the First Civilization.

The Templars also knew of the existence of the Pieces of Eden, and believed them to be gifts left behind by the First Civilization for them to utilise. This situation was in significant contrast to the situation in the 15th Century, where it had been the Assassins who knew explicitly of the existence of Those Who Came Before, whilst the Templar Grand Master Rodrigo Borgia merely believed the Vault to be the location of God himself. This changed however, and five hundred years later, the Order of Assassins knew nothing of the First Civilization's existence.

Bloodline
The mysterious individual known only as Subject 16 at one point theorised that the true reason behind the abilities of some Assassins was genetic, suggesting a lineage including both human and creator blood. 16's own genetic memories indicated him to be a direct descendant of both Adam and Eve, suggesting that his bloodline, if not many more, would all have access to these abilities. Indeed, Subject 16, Altaïr, Ezio and Desmond Miles all possessed Eagle Vision, while Ezio and Altaïr both showed themselves resistant to the effects of the Apple. In addition, Ezio was able to use the Staff and the Apple to open The Vault, while Rodrigo Borgia could not, and Altaïr had previously used the Apple to enlighten the people of Cyprus to Armand Bouchart's lies.

Trivia
*Though they play an important part in the plot of Assassin's Creed II, Those Who Came Before are first mentioned by Warren Vidic in Assassin's Creed. When talking to Desmond, Vidic claims that Abstergo is responsible for all major human technological advances in history, though he denies that the Templars invented them, calling them "gifts...from Those Who Came Before."
*It seems that not all of the history of them was lost to the Greeks and Romans, who still worshipped them, but as Deities. When monotheism (the belief in one god or deity) came about it became farther from the truth.
*The description of Those Who Came Before bears striking similarities to the real-world ancient astronaut theory.
*It is interesting to note that, despite supposedly residing in Africa, Minerva, Adam and Eve resemble caucasians. This may be explained if black skin color was the result of many generations of people in the area, each darker than the last, so because Adam and Eve were of the first humans, they would still be white.

Shaun Hastings is a supporting character in Assassin's Creed II. He is voiced and modelled after Danny Wallace, a British author and comedian. He assists Desmond by creating database entries on various persons, groups and buildings he will encounter while in the Animus 2.0. Every time Desmond encounters something of importance, Shaun will make an entry in the database, a sort of digital archive, for more in-depth information.

Through conversations in Assassin's Creed II, Desmond learns that Shaun was interested in conspiracies from an early age. Though he was unaware of the existence of modern-day Templars and Assassins, he realized that there was some power-struggle going on. Shaun attempted to tell others about his findings, not realizing that the Templars would try to silence him. Fortunately, Rebecca Crane "rescued" Shaun, and recruited him into the Assassin Order. This was somewhat unconventional, as Assassins are usually born into the order, as with Desmond.

Shaun is often cynical, condescending and pessimistic, but does have a playful side, often inserting humorous tidbits into the database entries of the Renaissance characters. Sometimes he will have little patience to talk to Desmond, other times he will lead off into long conversations. While Shaun's annoyance is usually directed at Desmond, he does insult Rebecca's immaturity by saying "the grown-ups are talking now" - even though she says she's saved his life mutiple times. During the modern segments, Shaun says that he enjoys his work researching behind a desk instead of being out in the field. When talking about his status as an Assassin, Shaun claims that he has killed before, and it is likely that he will kill again, though he would prefer if it wasn't necessary. This other side to Shaun's personality is also shown when he explains that he would like to sit in the Animus and perform Desmond's role.

<br clear="left"/>
Trivia
*Danny Wallace, the voice of the character, was contacted by Ubisoft when he went to the BAFTA video game awards with a friend. He was e-mailed and asked if he would like to be a character in an unknown video game which he accepted. The game turned out to be Assassin's Creed II.
*Shaun is very cynical; as he is quick to point out to Desmond that the Assassins are still killers whatever their motives; making them no more the "good guys" than the Templars.
*Shaun is quite irate through out most of his scenes, treating Desmond with contempt and belittling Rebecca. This is probably due to the high amount of stress that he must be under, juggling his duty to help Desmond in the Animus and his duty to the other Assassins. He also displays a little envy towards Desmond, as he wants to explore the timeline himself. Overall though, he probably holds a certain respect for Desmond; for his ancestry and as a fellow assassin. He no doubt holds Rebecca in higher regard than he lets on, since she DID save him from Abstergo. Only Lucy seems to be above his snide remarks, either as a sign of greater respect or because he knows not to mess with her.
*Shaun states during the corrupted sequences that he forgot Rodrigo Borgia was pope even though there is a portrait of him on the wall next to his computer.
*Shaun affirms that he also provides tactical support for the Assassins on the field.
*In one conversation with Desmond, Shaun tells him that he has his own special type of ability, which allows him to "see" information and decode it more easily. He compares it to Desmond's Eagle Vision, only more "useful" in his opinion. He was probably referring more to his high intellect than some kind of super-human ability though.
*The character Shaun Hastings is loosely based on the real life Sean Hastings, a cult hero in the computer industry.
The Spear and Halberd appear as a usable weapon in Assassin's Creed II, but you can only acquire it by disarming a Guard as Shops do not have them for sale. Spears and Halberds in the game classify as long weapons due to their length. Also, once combat is over or if you sprint away Ezio will discard it since whether or not the weapon is intact or broken, Ezio would not have enough inventory space to keep one. Also, a Spear or Halberd would also be too big to carry while moving freely across streets and rooftops. The length of the shaft keeps enemies at bay and makes it very difficult to evade. Dodging maneuvers against Halberdiers frequently fail to make sufficient distance, while blocks are overpowered. Long weapons can only be countered by Long or Heavy weapons, with the Hidden Blade being an exception as it counters any weapon, although the timing involved makes the maneuver more difficult, and thus risky. Also if you are equipped with your Hidden Gun or Poison Blade will automatically counter by his Hidden Blade. Maximum Combo length for Long weapon is 3 hits. The Long weapon is usually equipped by the Seekers. Some Brutes have also been seen wielding a Spear or Halberd as well.

Special Technique
The Sweep Attack is another charged move that can be interrupted, but one that can be unleashed at any time during the charge. The longer the Sweep is charged, the greater the arc it will affect. Acquired from Training, it is an attack that requires a long weapon.

A brief hold of the Weapon Hand Button performs a quick short Sweep. Keep it held and Ezio will turn the Long shaft over his shoulder, changing stance in readiness to perform a long Sweep spin when released. Enemies in front of him will trip and fall to the ground, while those behind are knocked over by a blow to the head. Sweeping more than three times with the same long weapon will cause it to break. There is an achievement that requires this skill.

Breakability
It is possible to block a Heavy weapon's Smash attack with a Long weapon. The defender will avoid all damage but the parrying weapon will shatter in two (bottom of spear/halberd in left hand, top of spearhead/halberd with spearhead in right hand). When a Long weapon breaks, the owner may continue to wield the remaining half as if it were a bladed (or blunt depending on which half) Medium weapon. An individual half can be kept in an empty primary weapon slot for later use, however it will vanish if you save and reload. You may also counter as soon as it broken which stabs both pieces into the attacker.
Trivia
*Spears and Halberds have the longest reach out of any other melee weapons in Assassin's Creed 2, making them very effective at close quarters.
*Out of the many weapons in the Italian Guard's arsenal, the Long weapons seem to be the rarest melee weapons.
*The Halberd seems to be the preferred weapon of the Seekers.
*Also, many Mercenaries seem to prefer long weapons as well.
*The Spears and Halberds can sometimes be quite tricky to counter as the guards wielding them swipe and lunge at a fast pace.
*After attacking or defending with Spears and Halberds frequently they can break in half leaving Ezio or the enemy open to attacks.
|location = Damascus - Rich District
}}

One of the nine people Al Mualim wants Altair to assassinate. He is found in the city of Damascus, in its rich district

Description
Abul Nuqoud is a very large, round, and wealthy man. He is a lavished merchant king of the city of Damascus. He decorates his home with the finest decor, and feasts upon only the finest of foods. The name "Abul Nuqoud" means the man who has a lot of money (literally the father (abu) of money (nuqoud)).

However, Abul has great disdain for the poor citizens of the city. He sees them as nothing more than a source of all the crime, disease, and other poor things in the world. With that, he takes perverse pleasure from seeing them die painful deaths. He is also incredibly self centered, and loves nothing more than to show off his generosity to the people of Damascus.

Death
As Altair seeks out Abul Nuqouds' life, the merchant king decides to throw a lavish party at his palace for the people of the city. After the guests have settled down, Abul proposes a toast to their generosity, then proceeds to lambaste them for their hatred and hypocrisy in supporting Saladin and his war campaign. It is revealed (while Altair combed the city tracking his target) that he had poisoned the wine to get revenge on the people who tormented him with their cruel words and bigotry, and he orders his men to kill anyone who tries to escape from the party.

Altair attempts to assassinate him, first by developing a plan to eliminate the two bodyguards. Succeding in the latter part, Altair assures himself that Abul has not taken notice to the impending danger around him given off from Altairs presence and concrete intent as he constantly and slowly paced back and forth Altair primed his Hidden Blade. Just as the Merchant King for the last time in his life turned and walked Altair suddenly sprung towards him sprinting full speed and instinctively knowing when in range Altair extends his Hidden Blade into the flesh and most likely vital organ of Abul ultimately, catching him and ending his existence in the world. In his dying speech, Abul says that he did not join up with the Templar's for revenge, but to create a new, better world instead of pretending to follow a god who called him an abomination (the implication being that he is homosexual, a possible reason for his resentment of the Upper Classes as while his position would keep him from being directly challenged, the upper classes would mock and judge him about his sexuality). He is the fourth public figure assasinated in public by the White Eagle Assassin Altair and second public assassination to take place in the streets of Demascus.

Trivia
* He runs suprisingly fast if he sees you coming.
* He is the only target without any weapon upon him. He will turn to fight you if he makes it to a guard tower and recieves a sword, however.
Faction: Crusader

William of Montferrat is the fifth target ordered by Al Mualim for Altaïr to assassinate. He is found in the rich district of Acre.

Description
William serves King Richard as Regent Lord of Acre, and spends most of his time training and preparing his men for the "coming war". However, few of his soldiers have actually been sent to join Richard at Arsuf, leading people to wonder what "war" he's referring to. It is implied that he was appointed by Richard to put pressure on hos son Conrad who has clashed with the King.

William always demands the best from his men, and is quick to point out flaws, while being reluctant to give praise. He is often shouting, and rarely sounds happy. He is also set in the belief that might makes right, and spends countless hours training his men.

The common opinion had been that William planned to kill Richard and turn Acre over to Conrad, but to Altair's shock he seems to hate his son in reality claiming; "My son is an arse, barely fit to lead his host let alone a kingdom." His true purpose was apparently to turn the city over to the Templar's, and for this reason he had been taking food from the people, with the aim of insuring it would be rationed properly during "the lean times" (presumably he expected resistance to the Templar's plans).

Death
William of Montferrat was assassinated within his personal quarters located in the Kings Citadel, shortly after a visit from King Richard of England, giving Altaïr the opportunity he needed to get close enough to kill him. The assassin managed to stealthily penetrate into the lord's citadel fortress, and quickly put an end to his life. After observing William and Richards heated discussion safely under the cloak of the noble crowd Altaïr pierces the fortress in search of his assassination target. Finally coming to a cornered keep a small fortress within a fortress Altaïr listens as William belittles his men with razor barbed insults intended on encouaraging them for better performance and stronger sense of duty. Silently approaching and skillfully eliminating archers, Altaïr finally is within position to strike. Remaining highly intune with the surrounding enviornment, Altaïr patiently watches and waits for William to perfectly position himself for his own unsuspecting death, As William continued his speech and slowly paced toward the scaffold, Altaïr with the speed and gentleness of the wind quickly dropped onto it, focused on his target and his vital spot to strike, and before anyone even began to take notice of the impending danger leaped into Williams direction his Hidden Blade fully extended, as William slightly took notice to the descending White Eagle assassin it was too late, for by the time he realized it he was already being forced onto his back and throat being punctured severely by the assassins steel Hidden Blade, resulting in instant death. Williams public assassination is recorded as the fifth Major-Public-Figure to be publicly assassinated and makes his death the official second within Acre.

Inspiration
He is based off the real life William V, Marquess of Montferrat, who died in 1191. (Not Conrad of Montferrat (1140-1192), who was William's son)
