Biography
Early life
Mario was most likely born in Monteriggioni, Tuscany, alongside his younger brother Giovanni. Mario came from a bloodline of notable Assassins and thus also became one, starting his training at a young age.

As a young man, Mario played an important role in the Battle of Anghiari, where he alerted the condottiero Micheletto Attendolo to dust clouds over the road, signalling a surprise advance on the Florentines by the Milanese troops. The attack was stopped, and the Florentines won the battle. However, after this battle, most of his time was spent defending his home town of Monteriggioni and the Tuscan countryside from persistent Florentine troops determined to seize it.

Defense of Monteriggioni
In 1454, Mario's younger brother Giovanni decided to move to Florence to pursue a career in banking. Mario remained at the Auditore family villa in Monteriggioni, and the two exchanged letters to keep in touch. In one of these letters, Mario defended his decision to stay in Monteriggioni by writing that he "preferred fighting like a man, to filling out balance sheets." It is insinuated that he rarely saw the family after that.

Under Mario's rule, Monteriggioni temporarily had a time of prosperity. Mario opened several shops and guilds in the city and greatly increased the city's defenses, in order to withstand Florentine attacks. He discovered a Florentine informant living in Monteriggioni, Luciano Pezzati, and faced his men with some of his own. He dueled Luciano, barely defeating him, and had him dragged to the Villa Auditore. From Luciano, he found out that Florence was sending the condottiero Federico da Montefeltro to lead a Florentine attack on Monteriggioni. Due to Mario's leadership, the city was succesfully defended and the attack was a failure.

Training Ezio
In 1476, Giovanni and two of his sons, Federico and Petruccio, were executed for being accused of treason, while secretly being executed by the Templars, the arch-enemies of the Assassins. In order to get to safety, Giovanni's remaining son Ezio escorted his mother Maria and sister Claudia out of Florence and towards Monteriggioni.

When the three almost reached Monteriggioni, they were ambushed by Vieri de' Pazzi and his soldiers. Mario and his mercenaries saved the trio and he insisted that they accompanied him back to Monteriggioni. Mario told Ezio of his Assassin heritage and that he had to be trained so that he can properly fight and defeat the Templars and protect his mother and sister. He then showed Ezio the inside of his villa and the Sanctuary hidden at the back of a bookcase and explained the purpose of the Codex. He soon started Ezio's training to become an Assassin and was also shown to be extremely proud of his Assassin heritage after he stormed off when Ezio announced his decision to take Maria and Claudia to Spain, against Mario's wishes.

Feeling guilty, Ezio rethought his decision and followed Mario to San Gimignano to kill Vieri de' Pazzi. When Ezio killed Vieri and began to abuse the body, Mario stepped in and urged him to have respect for the dead. "You are not Vieri," he said to Ezio, "do not become him." Then, addressing Vieri's body, he delivered a short monologue before uttering the words "requiescat in pace (rest in peace)," a term that Ezio adopted for further assassinations.

Acquisition of the Apple of Eden
In 1488, Mario and some of the other Assassins met with each other in Venice to acquire the "Apple" from the Grand Master of the Templar Order, Rodrigo Borgia, knowing that it was to be delivered to him that day. When they arrived at Rodrigo's location, they found Ezio fighting Rodrigo and joined his side. After defeating Rodrigo's guards and almost killing Rodrigo, the latter ran for his life and left the Apple behind. The group, excluding Mario, all revealed themselves to be Assassins, which was unbeknownst to Ezio when he first met them.

After securing the Piece of Eden, Mario studied it alongside Niccolò Machiavelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Ezio. When the Apple was activated, Mario and Machiavelli were both affected and collapsed, holding their heads. Mario recognized its great power and told Ezio to protect it by taking it to the Rocca di Ravaldino in Forlì, as that citadel was protected by their ally Caterina Sforza. Mario then invited Leonardo to the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni.

After seeing Ezio place his fiftieth feather in the chest in Mariaa's room, Mario entered and attempted to stop Ezio from continuing on what Mario considered to be a vain effort and left after informing him that he left a new weapon at the blacksmith for Ezio to use.

In 1499, Mario, Ezio and the other Assassin who Ezio previously met gathered in the Villa Auditore to find out the prophecy in the Codex. They found out that the Codex pages showed a map of all the locations of 'vaults' in the world. Ezio concluded that the nearest vault was in the Vatican and that Rodrigo Borgia simply became pope so that he could have access to the vault and the Staff of Eden, which was in fact the papal staff. Ezio left for Rome to assassinate Rodrigo and enter the vault, killing several of his men along the Passetto di Borgo. Ezio eventually spared Rodrigo, but recovered the Staff of Eden from him and discovered the Vault.

Death
Some time after Ezio returned to the villa from Rome, Monteriggioni was attacked by Cesare Borgia and his men. Mario quickly met with Ezio and told him to protect the city in any way possible and that he would keep the Apple safe with him. However, Mario became wounded and was captured by Cesare. Mario, who walked back to the city, collapsed at the city gate, followed by Cesare Borgia and his lieutenants. Cesare, holding the Apple in his hand, shot Mario as an 'invitation' from his family to Ezio's to go to Rome.

Personality and characteristics
Mario dressed in the flamboyant style of the Italian nobility of the Renaissance, sported long, dark hair that he slicked back neatly and had a scar over his left eye, which he was also blind in. He was a boisterous man and made no apologies for his passion for fighting and alcohol. He cared deeply for his family and was extremely proud of his Assassin heritage. From his letter to Giovanni and their differences in fighting styles, it can be assumed that he was often playfully critical of his brother, much like his nephew Federico was with Ezio.

The logo of the Assassins was embroidered/stitched onto the leather of Mario's left shoulder pad. The Auditore coat of arms was also stitched onto the cape he wore.

Upon close inspection, one notes that Mario often put his hand on the shoulder of the person he was speaking to, presumably as a sign of closeness or affection.

Trivia
*When he first introduced himself, he exclaimed to Ezio that "It's a-me, Mario!". This being a popular phrase of Mario's from the Super Mario Bros. game series.
*In the Facebook game Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, the player relives Mario's memories (of the year 1454). Although the reliving of his memories may not be canon, it may indicate that he did in fact have a son or daughter.
*He was often referred to as ubriacone ("drunkard" in Italian) by the Pazzi.
*Although Mario lived in the villa, you only get to see him during missions or when you place your 50th feather in Maria's box.
*In a gameplay video for Brotherhood, it can be noted that Mario had greying hair, indicating he has aged significantly.
*In a new gameplay video of Brotherhood it can be noted that Mario survived the shot by Cesare Borgia as he is seen fighting the guards with Ezio in Rome.

Biography
Early life
Mario was most likely born in Monteriggioni, Tuscany, alongside his younger brother Giovanni.

Desmond Miles (born 1987) is the main protagonist of the Assassin's Creed series and the descendant of a long line of ancestors who swore their allegiance to the Assassin Order. He is initially forced to use a machine, called the Animus, created by Abstergo Industries – the modern front of the Knights Templar – to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad during the Crusader era, in their quest to locate the "Apple", a Piece of Eden.

Eventually escaping with the aid of modern day Assassins, Desmond once again uses an improved version of the Animus to explore the memories of his second ancestor, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, so as to learn the ways of the Assassins in a much faster way than normal.

Biography
Early life
Desmond Miles was born in an Assassin "hideout" in the desert, an "off the grid" compound with a population of about thirty people, much like the city of Masyaf, where he was destined to be trained as an Assassin. He was frustrated by his parents' explicit instructions not to leave the compound, and believed them to be overly concerned and paranoid. On his 16th birthday, he finally fled, "wanting to see the rest of the world." He later told Lucy Stillman that he had no regrets over leaving his parents, because as far as he was concerned, they were little more than his "wardens." After leaving the Assassin compound, he went into hiding for nine years. While keeping a low profile, he eventually became a bartender. Aware of the Knights Templar, and wanting to avoid both them and the Assassins, Desmond never used his real name and used only cash to purchase items. However, he was eventually found, traced through a fingerprint needed for a motorcycle license, and was brought to Abstergo Laboratory.

Kidnapped by Abstergo
I'm not an assassin&hellip; not any more.

In September 2012, Desmond Miles was kidnapped by Abstergo Industries, a pharmaceutical company and front for the Knights Templar, for use as a test subject in the Animus, a device that can read the memories of Desmond's ancestors through the "genetic memory" left behind in their descendants' DNA. At first Warren Vidic, attempted to pry the information he wanted from Desmond's mind, but was met with failure. Whilst Desmond claimed to be nothing more than a bartender, Vidic revealed that they knew of his history as an Assassin, forcing Desmond to finally admit his past life. Vidic and Lucy Stillman told Desmond that they were trying to access a certain memory, but Desmond's subconscious was resisting their efforts. Vidic warned Desmond that if he refused to assist them, they would induce a coma, continue their work, and when done with Desmond, leave him to die. Without much choice, Desmond agreed to help them.

Desmond was made to explore the genetic memories of his ancestor – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, a member of a clan of Assassins during the Third Crusade, specifically Altaïr's experiences during the year 1191 – and does so over several days under the watchful eye of Warren Vidic. During the nights however, Desmond discovered that he was able to explore the lab he was being held in, accessing the Animus computer and, after stealing Warren Vidic's pen, gaining access to his personal computer. Through e-mails, Desmond learned of a Subject 16 who had suffered from a "bleeding effect" due to prolonged exposure to the Animus, as well as tidbits of information from the outside world.Eventually, with the aid of Lucy, the Assassins learned of Desmond's capture and attempted to liberate him, with the gunfire of their assault being heard through an intercom device, although the rescue attempt failed. Vidic boasts that those Assassins were in fact the last of the group; their desert hideout having been previously destroyed. Lucy Stillman's actions, however, suggest otherwise, and when Desmond asked if Lucy knew anything about his parents, she responded by saying that she didn't know, but that they probably escaped. During this discussion, Lucy revealed herself to be an undercover member of the Assassins. Desmond eventually achieved Vidic's goal and discovered the location of numerous Pieces of Eden. Executives of Abstergo Industries ordered his execution, but his life was saved by Stillman's intervention, who asked to keep Desmond alive in order to re-access his memories if need be. After the executives leave, Desmond suddenly accesses the "eagle vision" of his ancestor Altaïr, seeing Warren and Lucy for their true allegiances, as well as countless scrawled messages and puzzles on the floor of the main laboratory.

Escape to the Hideout
Whoa... Alright, wasn't expecting that...
At the beginning of Assassin's Creed II, Desmond was still being held within the laboratory at Abstergo, continuing directly from the last game from a couple of hours. Lucy suddenly arrives, covered in blood and demanding Desmond to get into the Animus before Abstergo discovers what she’d done. Desmond, rather confused, agrees and manages to sync with closest genetic match recorded in the Animus’ memory core. Inside the Animus, he experiences the birth of another of his ancestors, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a joint ancestor of his and Subject 16's. He was quickly pulled out, though, and both make their escape.

They were quickly spotted by Abstergo security and forced into an engagement which Lucy quickly ended, allowing them to continue on stealthily. The two soon entered a large open room filled with office blocks, and lined with a large number of Animi, although Desmond's questions about them are met with silence. Desmond instinctively called upon his recently activated Eagle Vision to open the door to an elevator, locked with a password that Lucy did not have. Once in the car park, the two were halted by yet more Abstergo guards, but were able to overcome them and escape.

Arriving at the Assassin's hideout, Desmond was introduced to two more Assassins – Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane – who have worked with Lucy over the years. Lucy told Desmond that they wanted him to become trained in the ways of the Assassin, and thanks to the Bleeding Effect, they could achieve this in a matter of days, although it required him learning the ways of an Assassin through a new ancestor; Ezio. Desmond agrees to help almost immediately, and was quickly plugged in the Animus 2.0.

After learning the ways of the Assassin through Ezio's memories, Desmond was retracted from the Animus, partly to test his retention of the memories, but also to prevent the mental
degradation that Subject 16 had suffered from being in the Animus for an extended period of time.

Tasking him with initiating security protocols around the Assassin hideout, Lucy left it to Desmond to work out how to reach them through the use of his Eagle Vision and new-found Free Running skills. Just as he began, however, he started suffering vivid hallucinations of the Crusader era and the Italian Renaissance. At first the visions were short, and were nothing to worry about, but after completing the task, Desmond was incapacitated as the visions became more real.

Taken back to Acre, Desmond once again followed the memories of Altaïr, this time without the use of the Animus, and discovered Altaïr and Maria Thorpe conceived a child, Desmond's next ancestor.

<br>
The next day, Desmond had recovered from the experiences and returned to the Animus, neglecting to tell the Assassins what had happened. He continued the watch over the genetic memories of Ezio Auditore, despite at one time being thrown out by a "corrupted memory sequence." Eventually, they learn that Ezio's arch-nemesis, the Templar Grandmaster Rodrigo Borgia had, in 1492 become Pope Alexander VI, so as to gain access to yet another Piece of Eden, the Papal Staff, as well as the Vault. As Ezio's story began to conclude, Desmond and the Assassins watched deep within the Vault beneath the Vatican. Ezio found himself confronted by a "god" hologram who called herself Minerva; Minerva warns the Assassins of the end of the world, as well as retelling the story of the war between "Those Who Came Before," and their human subjects. The Assassins are shocked when Minerva addresses Desmond by name, confusing even Ezio, and it is revealed that Minerva was in fact talking to Desmond through Ezio. Desmond was quickly pulled out of the Animus, and upon seeing the three rushing to collect their belongings, realized that the Templars had found their location.

Immediately after getting out of the Animus, Lucy tossed Desmond a Hidden Blade with the Assassin's emblem on it, and asks for his assistance in covering the escape. Making their way into the warehouse, Vidic appeared, flanked by Abstergo security officials with the intent of reclaiming Desmond. The two Assassins fought off the Templars, with Desmond, now fully synchronized with Ezio, masterfully using his Hidden Blade to kill many of the guards. With his entourage eliminated, Vidic was left to confront Desmond on his own, but instead retreats, promising that their victory is only temporary. The four Assassins then fled north, and Desmond is hooked up to the Animus inside the van and told to continue to search through his memories for anything useful. Meanwhile, the other Assassins begin to discuss the nature of Minerva and her talk.

Characteristics and personality
Desmond has an uncanny resemblance to both Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, despite having very little in common with their personalities. And being a discreet individual, he does not wear extravagant clothing, accustomed to a white hooded jacket, jeans, and white sneakers. Interestingly, if raised, the hood exhibits a beak-like feature similar to Ezio's and Altaïr's. In Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, his attire differs, now having a backpack, black converses, white hooded jacket with a red collar, similar to Ezio, with a black shirt underneath. His sleeves are rolled up to reveal a tattoo where the Hidden Blade should be.

Desmond was a gruff and cynical individual, who held a serious outlook on life, due to being aware of the Templars and Assassins since his youth, although he was unaware of Abstergo Industries being a Templar company. Despite this, he was not above jesting about his situation, and would occasionally make jokes, although they rarely elicited a good reaction. After his emancipation from Abstergo, Desmond's demeanor became considerably more relaxed, and he spent a noticeable amount of time conversing with Lucy.

Equipment and skills
Being that Desmond was trained during childhood as an Assassin, he learned basic reconnaissance skills of eavesdropping and pickpocketing, as well as being a competent fist fighter. After about a week of being forced to relive the memories of his ancestor, Altaïr, Desmond began to experience the Bleeding Effect and developed an extra-sensory ability called Eagle Vision. Later on, after willingly exploring the memories of another ancestor, Ezio Auditore, Desmond learned how to free-run and use weapons. Not long afterwards, he was able to easily fend off a Templar attack with Ezio's combat skills.

Desmond is now able to use all of the skills and abilities his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze could in and out of combat.

Trivia
*He is modelled after Francisco Randez and voiced by Nolan North. Curiously, Randez also used to be a bartender before he became a model. This may have inspired the makers of the game to give Desmond the same profession.
*His face changes slightly in Assassin's Creed II to match the look of Ezio, whose face also slightly differs from Altaïr's in the first game.
*Desmond possesses the same scar on his lip as his ancestors Altaïr and Ezio had.
*Desmond and Altaïr share the same age during the first game, both being 25 years of age in 2012 and 1191 respectively.
*Desmond is a descendant of Those Who Came Before and Humans. Proof of this is his Eagle Vision, product of the unification of those two races, which also led to the birth of the first "Assassins", Adam and Eve.
*Desmond has A+ blood type.
*Desmond's history shows he never wanted to be an assassin, nor does he have the skills yet before the second game to be one. However in the graphic novel, included with the limited edition of the first game, he does call himself an assassin and shows skills of stealth and lethality.
*Desmond acquires a Hidden Blade at the conclusion of Assassin's Creed II. The original owner of the blade is uncertain, but it shares the same design as the one Ezio inherited from his father, Giovanni.
*The relationship between him and Subject 16 is currently unknown.
**Due to the fact that Desmond and Subject 16 are both descendants of Ezio, it is certain that they are somewhat blood related.
*The etymology of Desmond's name "The World" (or Man of the World in Celtic and Latin) is not related to either of his ancestors, whereas Altaïr's and Ezio's names pertain to avians; Altaïr's being "The Flying One" and Ezio's "The Eagle". His surname "Miles" is also the Latin word for "Soldier".
**The name however suits him, as he wanted to leave his parents' watchful eyes to see the rest of the world outside the compound, and refers to his role in saving it from destruction.
**Desmond is also known as Subject 17, for he is the 17th person that was used to test the Animus.
*Desmond's hood changes subtly between the events of AC1 and AC2. It visibly begins to take the shape of Ezio's hood, becoming pointier, while in AC1 it was rounder and more similar to Altaïr's.
*Desmond has a pattern tattooed onto his left forearm, where Assassins would usually wear their Hidden Blade.
*Desmond also has a beard seen in pictures containing Shaun Hastings in the link Ubisoft posted on their Shaun Hastings trailer.
The Auditore Family Villa was a stronghold in the city of Monteriggioni. It was built by Domenico Auditore, and later used to provide refuge for Ezio and his family after the murder of Giovanni, Federico and Petruccio in Florence. Sitting in a beautiful Tuscan valley, the villa and Monteriggioni had become run down over time and was badly in need of repair.

During the villa's construction, Domenico designed the home to double as a fortress and training ground for the town. The building was filled with hidden compartments and rooms, such as a moving bookshelf in the study. It concealed the entrance to the Sanctuary, a shrine to Assassins past and the resting place of Altaïr's Armor. Though unconnected to the villa, the Auditore Family Crypt lay nearby.

After a Florentine attack in 1320 left the facade damaged, the present facade was erected and a painting gallery was added to the interior.

In 1476, Ezio and his family arrived in the villa after the execution of his father and brothers. Ezio trained with his uncle for two years, preparing to assassinate Vieri de' Pazzi. Claudia and Maria Auditore remained at the villa for the rest of Ezio's journey. Claudia kept records of Monteriggioni's income and Ezio's progress, while Maria prayed in her room under constant grief of her husband and sons' deaths. This changed only after Ezio gathered and stored eagle feathers as keepsakes and to help her cope with the loss.

In 1499, Cesare Borgia besieged Monteriggioni, devastating the town and villa.
*Unlocking the two models
*Obtaining the portraits of all the conspirators (including conspirators from the Battle of Forli and Bonfire of the Vanities)

As Ezio invests in Monteriggioni, the Villa's outside appearance improves over time. Boards across windows are taken down, overgrown plants recede, and flags bearing the assassin symbol appear around the roof. Also, with each guild renovated, Courtesans, Mercenaries, and Thieves populate the town.

Trivia
*The glyph on the wall of the villa is a barcode, incorporated with the number 12212012. This presumably represents the end date of the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012, which is also the scheduled launch date of Abstergo's satellite.

<br>
