AC2
Heavy weapons were weapons that relied on sheer force and power to inflict bone-breaking damage.

Strength
When swung with sufficient strength, the weapons were able to smash through attempts to parry with smaller weapons. Opponents caught under the full weight of the blow mostly collapsed or could even drop their weapons. Heavy weapons could only be countered by Long or other Heavy weapons (with the Hidden Blade being an exception, as it can counter any weapon; though the timing involved makes the maneuver more difficult and thus risky).

Defense
The Assassin Ezio Auditore could disarm his opponent with his fists. If he was equipped with the Hidden Gun or Poison Blade, Ezio would automatically counter with his Hidden Blade. Counters with these powerful weapons were always lethal to the target, but sometimes he would leave the weapon in the victim's body.

Smash Kill
Before the siege of Monteriggioni, Ezio acquired the Smash skill by Training, and he could use it whenever he had a Heavy weapon equipped. A smash took a long time to build up, during which he was vulnerable to interruption. But when a fully charged Smash connected, it broke through enemy defense to cause a large amount of damage and further effects. It was unparryable, and the victim would get disarmed, or may have had a long weapon broken.

When in Rome, the Smash skill was no longer available, and had been replaced by the ability to throw heavy weapons at enemies. This could be done to perform instant kills on enemies up to around ten meters away. Note that one would have to pick up the heavy weapon after throwing it, and if the user picked up a different weapon, their weapon would change to that, and one would have to go to a blacksmith to re-equip the heavy weapon (at no cost). This skill did not need to be learned, unlike the Smash skill.

Heavy Sheath
Ezio could purchase a heavy sheath from a Tailor shop after he had traveled to Rome. This allowed him to equip two-handed weapons as his primary weapon, so that he had a choice of 6 more weapons. If Ezio had a two-handed weapon as his primary weapon, however, he could not carry another primary one-handed melee weapon (e.g. Swords, Warhammers, etc.). If he dropped his heavy weapon, he could pick up a different one that he had not yet purchased and equip it, (you can re-equip one-handed weapons upon returning to the Tiber Island Hideout, as well as armor).
*Cappadocia only.

Trivia
* Heavy Weapons can be re-obtained from bodies after they have been lodged in them through combat by simply picking up the body, which will cause the weapon to drop. This also happens when a long weapon has been lodged into bodies.
* The maximum amount of combo hits is 3.
* Players can disarm a weapon attack from Brutes in the first attempt, whereas it can take several attempts to disarm Elite or Leader Guards who are considerably less powerful damage-wise.
* Heavy Weapons are the most common weapons used by the Mercenaries.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Ezio has the ability to throw heavy and long weapons at his enemies. Heavy weapons will get stuck in the target's head while the long weapons will impale the target.
* Taunting with the "Head" button will make it easier to disarm tougher guards such as Brutes or Papal Guards.
* In Assassin's Creed II, brutes can be disarmed easily; however, in Brotherhood the brutes are very difficult to disarm, making the heavy weapons harder to obtain.
* A heavy weapon cannot be used to knock a guard off his horse; a medium sword is needed for that. A heavy weapon (like medium weapons) can counter a guard on his horse and knock him off in Brotherhood.
* Assassin Apprentices below the rank of Assassino can wield axes. While these weapons are describes as axes in the loadout screen of the Apprentice, however, they can manifest themselves as heavy swords as well.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, although Ezio can no longer perform the Smash skill, enemies still can. They can not, however, perform the disarm move.
* Occasionally, when a heavy weapon is thrown at a guard that is in mid-air, it will stay in his head and he will stand still. The guard will appear dead and won't attack Ezio. When the player removes the heavy weapon from the body, however, the weapon will fall to the ground and can be retrieved as usual.
* In Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, heavy weapons lack the ability to counter-attack other heavy weapon/long weapon users, except during an execution or counter-kill animation. Long weapons retain the ability to counter other long weapons/heavy weapons.
* In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, heavy weapons can now be countered against with medium weapons.

Through much of his life as an Assassin, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad wielded a personal sword of significant power. The blade's guard was shaped like an eagle's wings, with the pommel in the shape of an eagle's head.

During the Renaissance in Italy and Constantinople, another Assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze also made use of the weapon.

History
Third Crusade
Altaïr made use of his sword throughout most of his early life as an Assassin, using it with great skill and ease during missions such as the quest for the Chalice.

By 1191, he instead began making use of a Syrian sword with a curved blade and a golden hilt. However, this sword was taken from him after Al Mualim demoted him to the rank of novice for breaking all three tenets of the Creed.

During his progression back into the higher ranks, Altaïr started off with a basic sword similar to his personal one, though it lacked a cross guard. After he assassinated the first four of his nine assigned targets, his personal sword was returned to him. He made use of it until the Syrian sword was granted to him again.

Renaissance
Ezio Auditore was able to purchase Altaïr's sword from the blacksmith of Monteriggioni, and made use of it when he fought Rodrigo Borgia in the Sistine Chapel.

He continued to use it as he escaped the Vatican with his uncle Mario. During the Borgia's attack on Monteriggioni however, he did not have time to re-equip it, and was lost in the rubble of the Villa, along with much of his armor and other weapons.

Some time after establishing his Assassins Guild in Rome, he was able to recover the sword again after completing all five Assassin's Guild challenges, and he made use of it during the siege of Viana.

Though it is unknown what happened to the sword during Ezio's travels to Masyaf and Constantinople, he only began using it again some time after allying himself with the Ottoman Assassins, after completing the third series of the Assassin's Guild Challenges.

Trivia
Appearance
*The sword's picture at the blacksmiths shows its hilt wrapped in leather; however, the weapon itself does not have any leather wrapping.
**This is amended in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, where the leather wrapping is shown even while wielding it.
*The sword's appearance is slightly altered in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, with the hilt shown to be shorter, and turning from a bronzed color to completely silver.
*This sword is shorter compared to the other longswords Ezio can use, with the entire sword being only a little longer than the length of his arm. Despite this, Altaïr's sword is still the strongest weapon available.

Usage
*All the Masyaf guards in Assassin's Creed are shown to wield this sword.
*The guards in Rome are seen wielding a sword similar to the Sword of Altaïr.
*In Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, many if not all of the enemy guards can be seen wielding a sword similar to the Sword of Altaïr.
*During the memory "Follow The Money" in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, a guard draws and raises a sword identical to Altaïr's, in order to threaten Egidio Troche.
**Later in the same memory, a Papal Guard can also be seen with a similar sword.
*Assassin apprentices gain a sword that resembles the Sword of Altaïr upon reaching the rank of Assassino.

Other
*Though Altaïr's sword is considered the best sword in Assassin's Creed II and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the Old Syrian sword (which was among the cheapest weapons in Assassin's Creed II) is the best sword in Assassin's Creed.
*The Sword of Altaïr can be found in the "The Bull" stage of Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, as an ornament in the Kantara Castle's Great Hall.
*After buying the Sword of Altaïr, it may occasionally be randomly replaced with the common sword. To properly acquire it if this occurs, simply go to the Villa's weapon rack and re-equip it.
*It is unknown why the sword is available from the Monteriggioni blacksmith, since the sword (being Altaïr's personal weapon) would be assumed to be available together with his armor once it was unlocked.
*During the Cristina Memories in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, all memories in which Ezio has a sword in his sheath (starting at "Best Man"), he has the sword of Altaïr equipped. This contradicts the Assassin's Creed II timeline, where the sword was only available for purchase from Sequence 9.

*On completion of the third set of the Assassins Guild challenges in Assassin's Creed: Revelations and obtaining the Sword of Altaïr for Ezio, it also appears during the Masyaf Keys memories, replacing the Syrian sword.
*In Revelations, the Sword of Altair no longer displays maximum stats, being replaced in that function by Yusuf Tazim's kijil, which is unlocked by playing through the Master Assassin side mission "The Deacon Part 1". Altair's sword now has 5 damage, 3 speed, and 4 deflect.
*The sword of Altaïr is an artifact to be recovered in Assassin's Creed Revelations: Path to Revelations, bearing the description "Holding his weapon in my hands is enough to make me relive adventures of this legendary grand master."
Smoke Bombs were weapons available since the 15th century.

History
12th Century
Altaïr had access to smoke bombs during his quest for the chalice and used them in generally the same way Ezio Auditore used them and he can carry up to 5 of them. He seemed to not use them anymore after the events at Solomon's Temple.
15th Century
Smoke bombs are disposable and must be purchased for 350 florins each. Players can carry a maximum of three smoke bombs at a time, which are stored in a non-upgradeable pouch.
16th Century
Smoke bombs return when in Rome, with the same abilities as before, though the actual cloud itself is visually a lot smaller than in the previous game. Smoke bombs are also used by Assassin Recruits once they reach the eighth rank.

Technique
Using a powder "technology" from the Far East, the bomb releases a thick, grayish smoke screen for 8 seconds when thrown, to allow Ezio Auditore to flee his enemies, or assassinate them quickly in those seconds. The clever and strategic use of Smoke Bombs during difficult assassinations or large guard fights is a very important aspect in the games, as they allow players to strike specific targets or take down larger groups of enemies without being seen or encountering resistance, and allow players to slip in and out of hotspots undetected.
